Portrayed by: Arielle Kebbel

"Because when you can hurt, you can love. Love, Stefan, that's the point."

Stefan's Best Friend and vampire mentor.

  • Action Girl: Lexi is the first character introduced who can easily kick Damon's ass due to being a much older vampire and even being injected with vervain doesn't take her out completely.
  • Action Fashionista: Lexi seems to have a penchant for clothing and fashion and she is tough and kicks ass.
  • Badass Adorable: Lexi can be a very adorable Genki Girl and she is also incredibly strong and badass, willing to attack Damon when she senses him posing a threat.
  • Badass Boast: Lexi is normally nice and friendly, but that won't stop her from threatening to rip your throat out if you so much as cross her or anyone she cares about (i.e. Stefan).
  • Big Brother Mentor: Big Sister Mentor to Stefan. Lexi is like the older sister that Stefan never had and she's a replacement for Damon when Stefan had gone off the rails and became addicted to human blood after he first turned into a vampire. Lexi was the one who helped him to control his blood lust, got him on a diet of animal blood and helped Stefan to turn on his humanity and feel again.
  • Breakout Character: Lexi became a fan favorite and the audience hated when Damon killed her, which led her to have various appearances in future episodes as a Posthumous Character, either in flashbacks or as a Spirit Advisor.
  • Break the Cutie: According to flashbacks, Stefan has sent Lexi to help Damon when Damon was going on a bender in the '70s. Lexi got romantically involved with Damon in the process, only to find out that her helping Damon was useless and that Damon had used Lexi the whole time. It is no wonder Lexi hates Damon with the passion of a thousand suns.
  • Canon Foreigner: The character of Lexi doesn't exist in the novel series.
  • Cool Big Sis: To Stefan. Although she isn't related to Stefan, Lexi has always been the big sister figure in Stefan's life.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Lexi is very snarky and sarcastic. She has a dry sense of humor.
  • The Determinator: Lexi is never the type to quit or give up, especially in regards to Stefan.
  • Everyone Loves Blondes: She's blonde and is of the most popular and well-connected vampires in the series, which several different characters being her friends.
  • The Fashionista: Lexi seems to love fashion, clothing and dressing up.
  • Foil: To Sage, Damon's vampire motor, with Lexi being the Good Counterpart to Sage's Evil Counterpart. While Lexi was the one to teach Stefan a more moral way of living as a vampire and helped him control his humanity, Sage did the opposite for Damon, teaching him about being selfish and using his powers and sexuality to manipulate people.
  • Friendly Neighborhood Vampire: She had a very generous nature to mortals and a regard for human life, and while she failed to be a Vegetarian Vampire like Stefan, she still only relies on blood bags to fulfill her Life Drinker needs.
  • Genki Girl: Lexi is outgoing, fun-loving and energetic.
  • The Hedonist: She loves sex and drinking.
  • Hell-Bent for Leather: Lexi wears black leather jackets from time to time and looks cute with them.
  • Hope Bringer: Especially for Stefan. She has often mentored and helped him whenever Stefan fell off the wagon and turned off his humanity.
  • Like Brother and Sister: They're not related, but she considers Stefan to be her little brother and he feels the same. Stefan's actually much closer to Lexi than he is with his actual sibling Damon at the start of the show.
  • Killed Off for Real: She gets destroyed when staked by Damon after being shot by the Sheriff and injected with vervain. She does later show up as a Spirit Advisor ghost.
  • Life Drinker: Lexi is immortal. She has the ability to live forever and never age, and she feeds on blood. Being a Friendly Neighborhood Vampire, she mostly resorts to buying blood bags.
  • Manic Pixie Dream Girl: A platonic one to Stefan, being one of the few characters that manage to make him relax and have fun.
  • Meaningful Name: The name Alexia means "helper" and "defender of mankind". Lexi helped and mentored Stefan after he turned and during his Ripper days. She also helped to bring back Stefan's humanity ad got him to turn it on.
  • The Mentor: For Stefan during his life as a vampire, especially during his Ripper days. His Friendly Neighborhood Vampire attitude came from her.
  • Morality Chain: To Stefan, her mentorship and friendship are what kept his Ripper side at bay for decades.
  • Naked First Impression: Lexi is only wearing a Modesty Towel when she first meets Elena in the Salvatore manor, causing Elena to come to the Wrong Assumption that Lexi and Stefan romantically involved. Even after it's cleared up, Elena still nicknames her as "Towel Girl".
  • Nice Girl: One of the nicest characters in the series, practicing a peaceful way of living like a vampire, and trying to help others who do the same.
  • Passing the Torch: She Stefan's Morality Chain and makes it her personal business he doesn't fall into his Ripper persona again. After her death. her Unfinished Business as a ghost has her pass that responsibility to Elena, as she teaches Elena how to help restore Stefan's humanity.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: She wears fancy period dresses during the 1865 flashbacks and also during the 1940's.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Stefan. It is implied they lived together for decades, and have a pact to spend the rest of their afterlife together. In the Grand Finale, it's shown how they embrace when they see each other again.
  • Plucky Girl: In contrast to her brooding apprentice, Lexi is upbeat, positive, and optimistic.
  • Posthumous Character: She's Killed Off for Real by Damon in her introductory episode in season 1. But we discover far more about her after her death and how important she was for Stefan via flashbacks and her stint as a Spirit Advisor.
  • The Resenter: Towards Damon, for VERY good reason after he lied her into a relationship acting as if he was changing his ways then revealed it was all a trick and left her stranded on a rooftop in broad daylight, nearly killing her.
  • The Scapegoat: Damon plans her death, exposing her to the council and staking her so he can manipulate the council into thinking she is the vampire responsible for the murders in Mystic Falls.
  • Sex Goddess: She's the first character to mention the natural sexual prowess vampires possess.
  • Sexy Mentor: She's a beautiful and sexy vampire, but has a purely platonic relationship with her vampire apprentice Stefan.
  • Shipper on Deck: Lexi is often trying to play matchmaker for Stefan.
    • She 'approves of' him and Elena shortly after meeting her, and even gives Elena relationship advice regarding having an human/vampire relationship.
Lexi: When it's real, you can't walk away.
    • In The Walking Dead, she seems to be one for Stefan and Caroline, teasing about how close they seem.
Lexi: I see I've been replaced by another blonde? [she gives a suggestive look]
Stefan: What are you giving me that look for?
    Lexi: She's cute.
    Stefan: Do not start.
  • Spirit Advisor: In season 3, she comes back as a ghost to help Elena get Stefan to turn his humanity back on.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Stefan, to the point she refuses to come back to life unless Damon does it first, because she doesn't want Stefan to be missing his brother.
  • Vampires Are Sex Gods: She's a Head-Turning Beauty and explicitly mentions how vampires are much better in bed than normal humans. She even mocks Stefan for being naive for not to using it on Elena right away.
Lexi: Sex always works! I mean you'll rock her world so hard with your vamp-sex she'll be yours forever.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Played With. Damon gets her Killed Off for Real in her very first appearance, but she keeps being a recurring Posthumous Character until the final season, either by showing up in flashbacks or as a Spirit Advisor.

    Enzo

Lorenzo "Enzo" St. John

Portrayed By: Michael Malarkey

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/7fc3ab3053491e358cf480054630d484.jpg

Lorenzo "Enzo" St. John was born in 1876 in England. He is a main character, minor antagonist, and anti-hero in the series. He was formerly a major recurring character in the fifth season of the series, before being promoted to main in the sixth season. He is a vampire who was previously Damon Salvatore's cellmate in the 1950's, after being captured by the Augustines. He was first mentioned by Dr. Wes Maxfield, being dubbed as the "Augustine Vampire".

  • Affably Evil: If he likes you, Enzo can be friendly, loyal and downright pleasant. If you piss him off, he becomes Faux Affably Evil and will still be charming while planning to rip your eyes out.
  • Ambiguously Evil: Enzo has a rather Dark and Troubled Past, therefore, the reasons for him being "evil" are slightly justifiable. Although, from what has been shown so far, Enzo seems to be more psychologically damaged than downright evil.
  • Ax-Crazy: Only mildly. Although it is understandable why Enzo is so psychologically unhinged due to the fact that he was brutally tortured for years by Augustine.
  • Being Tortured Makes You Evil: Downplayed, being tortured didn't make Enzo evil, as much as furious with Damon for leaving him behind.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: With Bonnie in season 7, until they fall in love while he is helping her hide from the Armory.
  • Berserk Button: Does not like it when people don't listen to him when he is speaking.
  • Big Bad: Possibly of Season 5. Subverted. The actual Big Bad of season five will be Markos, the possible leader of the The Travellers.
  • Brutal Honesty: Won't hesitate to spill the harsh truth, especially towards Damon.
  • Canon Foreigner: He has no direct counterpart in the novels.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Enzo can even outsnark Damon.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: This is an interesting case where the antagonist (Enzo) was betrayed by Damon, not the other way around. When they were held captive by the Augustine society, they devised a plan to escape- Enzo would give Damon his blood rations for a year, allowing himself to grow weaker while Damon would gradually become strong enough to regain his vampiric abilities. When they were brought out on display as a medical oddity for the Augustine's, Damon broke free and killed their captors, but a fire started and Damon was unable to free Enzo. After realizing he was unlikely to save both Enzo and get to freedom, Damon flipped off his emotions and left Enzo to burn.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: With Damon; their imprisonment and torture by the Augustine society made them friends and allies.
  • Forgotten Fallen Friend: Enzo views himself as this to Damon, but the truth is a little more complicated.
  • Freudian Excuse: Enzo being tortured brutally for decades makes it understandable as to why he is the way that he is.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: Especially in season 7, he switches between helping the heroes and siding with the current villains many times. After a few Pet the Dog moments, he finally seems to be on the good side near the end of the season, especially after falling in love with Bonnie.
  • Hell-Bent for Leather: Like many of the vampires on the show, Enzo is seen wearing black leather jackets.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Damon as they were each other's only company for five years.
  • Iconic Sequel Character: Introduced in season 5, remains a main character for the rest of the show, and also becomes the main Love Interest to Bonnie, one of the three female leads.
  • Immortality: Enzo is a vampire, which means he can live forever without aging or dying. Which is a considerably less desirable power when your future promises nothing but daily agony. He is Type V and Typer X.
  • It's Personal: He was freed to act on the Augustine's orders, but his antagonism with Damon and the possibility of killing him sweetened the deal.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He becomes allies with Stefan and Caroline in order to help them find a cure for the ripper virus that has infected Damon and Elena.
  • Killed Off for Real: He gets his heart ripped out by Stefan.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Come on, look at him. Not only is he physically gorgeous, but he oozes charisma. Not to mention that accent...
  • The Nicknamer: Has called Caroline "Gorgeous", "Goldilocks" and "Blondie".
  • Official Couple: With Bonnie in season 7 during the 3 year time skip and shown being developed in flashbacks and flash-forwards.
  • Only Friend: Admitted Damon was his only friend... which only made the betrayal cut deeper.
  • Only One Name: Enzo doesn't seem to have a known last name.
  • Really 700 Years Old: His exact age is unknown but he was locked up for seventy years so he is in at least his late nineties or just over a hundred despite looking no older than his early thirties.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Damon offered him the chance to team up and kill Enzo's captors, but Enzo refused.
  • Rejected Apology: Rather understandably, Enzo remained bitter at Damon for leaving him to a half-century of torture at the hands of the Augustine's.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Enzo says that he was a former soldier and that he fought during World War II.
  • Ship Tease: A bit with Caroline in season 5 and 6 but it never goes anywhere. In season 7 he still cares for Caroline as a friend and becomes a Love Interest to Bonnie.

    Ivy

Ivy

Portrayed By: Emily C Chang

A young woman Stefan started dating before the start of Season Six. She is later turned into a vampire by Enzo.

  • Animal Motifs: She loves dogs.
  • Cassandra Truth: When she asks to know more about Stefan, he tells her he's a vampire. She believes he's joking and scolds him.
  • Kick the Dog: She tells Stefan it's her fault she's now a vampire when Enzo is the one who turned her. Caroline was going to teach her how to be a vampire, but Ivy wants to go to a party and snaps her neck.
  • Killed Off for Real: Captured by Tripp Cooke and is killed by being transported by him in his vampire-proof van over the Travelers' anti-magic border.
  • Neck Snap: By Enzo. Turns out Enzo actually turned her into a vampire.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Ivy is this for Stefan when he tries to turn his back on his old life in Mystic Falls after Damon's death in Season 5.
  • Too Dumb to Live: She fed on a human victim losing control of her bloodlust. Her face was covered in blood. She didn't wash it off and ran right into Tripp Cooke which led to her death.
