Ordesia Empire

    General
  • Grim Up North: Laurenfrost territory, which borders the Holy Kingdom, is well known for its cold climate.
  • Puppet State: In practice, it becomes one for the Holy Kingdom of Lugia. By the beginning of the series, it had already infiltrated the upper echelons of government. Come Volume 14, they scheme to have their puppet, Arneus, ascend as emperor, while at the same time out taking out the members of the nobility faction opposing his rule. One of Team Scarlet's main objectives for the rest of the series is to restore the Ordesia Empire through the movement of Legitimate Ordesia.

Team Scarlet

One of the three teams representing Ordesia Empire.

    General
  • Battle Harem: All of the girls on the team are skilled Elementalists that grow to be very tight knit as the series goes on and have a romantic interest in Kamito. Hell, by the end of the series, the girls conspire to win the next Blade Dance just to win the right to form a nation where Kamito is King and polygamy is legal just so they all can marry him. He had no say in this of course, but won't refuse either.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: And how!
    • Kamito is infamous as "The Demon King Of The Night" capable of corrupting any young lady unlucky enough to be in his presence.
    • Claire is the sister of the Calamity Queen, and so is constantly bullied for it.
    • Fianna is the Lost Queen, who lost her royalty status when she failed to accomplish the duties she was trained for.
    • Rinslet is considered a country bumpkin, and her prideful attitude makes it hard for her to make friends.
    • Ellis is looked down upon by seniors who dislike that someone younger than them is leading the Sylphid Knights.

    Kazehaya Kamito

Kazehaya Kamito/Ren Ashbell

Voiced by: Makoto Furukawa
Spirit(s): Terminus Est (humanoid), Restia Ashdoll (humanoid)
Spirit Attribute(s): Steel (Est), Darkness (Restia)
Elemental Waffe: Demon Slayer (Est - broadsword), Vorpal Sword (Restia - broadsword)

The Hero of our story. Three years ago he won the Blade Dance as Ren Ashbell. Now, having lost his contracted spirit, he is lured to Areishia Spirit Academy by Greyworth Ciel Mais to compete in the Blade Dance once more.

He is able to commune with spirits despite being a male, and given that the only only other male in recorded history to possess such a trait waged war against most of the world, this causes no small amount of distrust suspicion from other people. However, Kamito couldn't could less about this so-called Demon King. His only interest is to be reunited with Restia, and to protect the people he holds dear.

  • Accidental Pervert: The number of times he finds himself in a compromising position with a girl, only for someone else to enter the room and judge him as a perverted scumbag are far too many to count.
  • The Ace: Even after losing most of his strength from years of inactivity, he is still regarded as Team Scarlet's powerhouse from the start. Becomes even more prominent as he regains his former power over time.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Kamito ends up begging Rinslet to join Team Scarlet once it becomes clear they wouldn't stand a chance against Velsaria without her. He does so to preserve both Claire's pride and Rinslet's, as the latter clearly wanted to join their team, but wasn't willing to say it directly, while Claire couldn't bring herself to ask her to join them in a non-condescending way.
  • Alliterative Name: Kazehaya Kamito.
  • Anti-Anti-Christ: As the reincarnation of the Demon King, he could destroy the world one day. He's trying not to lose himself to his powers.
  • Attractive Bent-Gender: His disguise as Ren Ashbell had everyone fooled. Even in the present, whenever he is forced to be Disguised in Drag, he is noted to be prettier than most girls.
  • The Berserker: When he starts to accept the power of the Demon King sleeping within him, he becomes this.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Three years of inactivity greatly weakened his abilities as an elementalist. However, he's still much stronger than most of them.
  • Brutal Honesty: The narration notes he lacks tact when commenting on girls' appearances and personalities. This gets him in trouble more than once.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Due to the conditioning he went through at the Instructional School, he genuinely doesn't remember promising Muir he would be her brother. Even if he did, it's unlikely that exchange was anywhere near as meaningful to him as it was to her.
    • He also had to be reminded of the time he saved Fianna from a rampaging spirit and she discovered he was Ren Ashbell.
  • Butt-Monkey: He gets blamed for pretty much everything, with nearly every girl in the world believing that he's a complete pervert.
  • Chick Magnet: All the girls in his team are after him. Unfortunately for him, this only worsens his reputation as a casanova.
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: To an extent. He occasionally flirts with girls and teases them for fun, but it doesn't occur to him that they could end up having serious feelings for him. Justified as the two women he had meaningful interactions with before were Restia and Greyworth. He doesn't know many more ways to interact with them.
  • Conspicuous Gloves: He always wears leather gloves on his left hand in order to hide the spirit seal of Restia. This is because any elementalist whos sees it would immediately realize that he's Ren Ashbell. He later drops it after he loses Restia's seal and his subsequent reforming of contract with her, considering he's no longer even trying to hide his identity at all aside from keeping the remaining members of Team Scarlet who are still in the dark Rinslet and Ellis hopes and dreams for Ren Ashbell alive.
  • Cool Sword: He has two of them. Both of which turn into beautiful girls.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: He really doesn't like it when someone other than him wields Restia.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: As a kid he was taken by the Instructional School, where he was subjected to gruesome training to train him as an assassin and remove his feelings.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Any time he isn't openly teasing someone.
  • Declaration of Protection: He swears to protect Claire as her "contracted spirit".
  • Defusing the Tyke-Bomb: Happened twice during the past. Restia does it initially during her days training Kamito at the Instructional School, helping Kamito recover the emotions that had been stripped from him. When the instructors discover what she did, they have Restia sealed away and attempt to have Kamito's emotions erased again. They mostly succeed, but are unable to make him forget his feelings for Restia, and when the opportunity presents itself, he escapes with the ring where Restia is sealed. Eventually, he ends up under Greyworth's care, who releases Restia and does some defusing too.
  • Diagonal Cut: Violet Flash, a single strike so fast most opponents can't see it. Also the attack Greyworth beat him down with on their first meeting.
  • Disguised in Drag: He disguised himself as a girl under the alias "Ren Ashbell" in order to participate and win the Blade Dance 3 years prior the start of the series.
    • Fianna convinces him to dress as a princess maiden to infiltrate the Divine Ritual Institute's temple in Ragna Ys, so they could ask Fianna's friend, Reicha Alminas, for help in dealing with the Brand of Darkness Ren Ashbell had left in his body.
    • A short story reveals he once also dressed as a waitress when working part-time at a maid café alongside Fianna, Est and Claire. The owner practically forced him into it after taking a good look at him.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: He's often weakened or wounded in some way so he doesn't immediately curb stomp most of his opponents.
  • Dual Wielding: He wields both Est and Restia once he gets the latter back.
  • The Dulcinea Effect: He's constantly risking his life to save girls he barely knows. Jio exploits this by gunning for his teammates, which leads to Kamito tanking powerful attacks in order to protect them.
  • Embarrassing Nickname:
  • Enemy Mine: In Volume 13, he is forced to fight alongside Luminaris.
  • First Kiss: With Restia, before she is sealed away by the Instructional School's elders.
  • First-Name Basis: Insists on being addressed by his given name during his first encounter with Est.
  • Full-Name Basis: Ren Ashbell is always called by her full name by everyone.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Unfortunately for him, he is subject to being called a pervert. It even spread to other countries through their spies in the academy, whom he notes are not that good at their jobs.
  • Heroic Ambidexterity: He is ambidextrous, which is a big help for his Dual Wielding. He usually prefers using the Vorpal Sword with his left hand, and Terminus Est with his right, likely due to the location of his seals.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Much to his dismay, nearly every elementalist of his generation views his Ren Ashbell persona as their idol, with the tales and exaggerations reaching the point of Folk Hero levels. This is one of his reasons for not revealing his secret, even to his friends, so he wouldn't crush their dreams.
  • Honor Before Reason: When Leonora asks for his help to get out of the slump she had been in since their battle during the Tempest, Kamito internally notes that helping the ace of an enemy team get back on shape before the finals might not be that beneficial for his team; yet he still lends her a hand, because he also desires to battle Leonora at her full strength.
  • I'm Crying, but I Don't Know Why: Despite suffering from amnesia at the time, Kamito realizes that he wishes to protect the things that are dear to him, even if he no longer remembers them. Kamito comes to this conclusion as his friends, the Academy, and the Academy Town are all in danger of being destroyed during the Great Festival of the Spirits. He then starts crying without understanding why, and realizes he must have failed to protect someone in the past.
  • Impossibly Cool Clothes: Nobody mentions how Kamito wears his tie loose and outside of his suit jacket, nor is it ever explained why he does it. He makes it work, though.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: He lost his memories of what happened just after he won the previous Blade Dance, particularly everything related to his Wish.
    • Following Restia's apparent demise in Volume 11, all his memories starting from the point they met just vanish, resulting in the last 4 years of his life being gone, and his mind returning to his 12 year-old self's. He recovers by the end of Volume 12.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Back during his days as Ren Ashbell. Just about the only opponents that could give him a hard time were Elementalists with Holy Elemental spirits, as Restia, being of Darkness Element, is at a serious disadvantage against.
  • Master Swordsman: Was one back in the day as Ren Ashbell. He regains his former power over the course of the series, and surpasses it when he dual wields Restia and Est.
  • The One Guy: He's the world's only known living male elementalist.
  • Only Sane Man: Is often completely dumbfounded by the antics of his friends.
  • Pretty Boy: He has the body type, can pull off wearing women's clothing at 16, and is stated to be quite handsome in part because of his exotic appearance.
  • Real Men Cook: Is quite capable of making delicious dishes, even from canned food. He actually takes care of cooking (that is, when Rinslet doesn’t "accidentally" cook too much) for Claire and Fianna in the academy, since both of them are hopeless in the kitchen.
  • Red Baron: Was known as the Strongest Blade Dancer during his days as Ren Ashbell.
  • Sealed Inside a Person-Shaped Can: Before her defeat, Ren Ashdoll sealed her power within humanity itself and would manifest onto individuals throughout history. Many either went crazy or were destroyed by her power.
  • Shirtless Scene: After arriving with an Intimate Open Shirt, he removes his blazer and spends the battle with Velsaria topless, save for a set of bandages. Female Gaze ensues.
  • Spam Attack: Bursting Blossom Spiral Blade Dance, his finishing move. The number of hits in the attack varies.
    • This technique was designed to kill Archdemon-Class Spirits. Even weakened as he is, few people could take it at full power and survive.
  • Spectacular Spinning: Shadow Moon Waltz, an anti-army technique.
  • Stock Light-Novel Hero: Kamito is the only known male elementalist, a person who is able to make contracts with spirits. This, of course, means that he is the only boy to attend a school devoted to that craft, thus guaranteeing an Unwanted Harem. Also, he is secretly Ren Ashbell, the world's greatest bladedancer, capable of defeating just about any opponent singlehandedly once he gets serious. Further, he is contracted to two immensely powerful spirits: Est, one of the most powerful holy swords in existence, and Restia, another powerful sword which is the literal manifestation of the Darkness Elemental Lord.
  • Supernatural Martial Arts: The Absolute Blade Arts techniques he learned from Greyworth. There are also the assassination techniques he acquired at the Instructional School.
  • Taking the Bullet: He is prone to doing this to protect his teammates, something which Jio in particular takes advantage of.
  • The Tease: Is not above teasing the girls sometimes, especially due to their lack of knowledge about indecent subjects. Claire is his main victim.
  • Tranquil Fury: Harming his friends tends to bring out this side of him.
  • Unwanted Harem: Oy vey. Claire, Fianna, Est, Ellis, Rinslet, Muir, Restia, and Leonora. And these are only the primary characters.
  • Urban Legend Love Life: Everyone in the continent assumes Kamito is a perverted ladykiller when he's actually a Clueless Chick-Magnet.
  • Willfully Weak:
    • Despite being weakened due to his three years of inactivity, he still holds back against his opponents. Justified because his true fighting style involves techniques only Ren Ashbell and Greyworth knew, so using it would reveal that he is Ren Ashbell.
    • Eventually he starts using them anyway, and tries to pass it off as having studied under Greyworth at a different time than Ren Ashbell. It works, somewhat.

    Claire Rouge

Claire Rouge/Elstein

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/claire_rouge_anime_8.png
Voiced by: Ibuki Kido
Spirit(s): Scarlet (kitten), Ortlinde (humanoid)
Spirit Attribute(s): Fire
Elemental Waffe: Flametongue (whip)

A young girl Kamito meets on his way to the Areishia Spirit Academy. After Kamito forms a contract with a spirit she wanted, therefore “stealing” it from her, she declares him her slave spirit and forces him to form a team with her.

At first obsessed with obtaining strength to obtain her wish, she quickly mellows out thanks to Kamito's influence, and grows to become a competent team leader and remarkable elementalist, not to mention a dear friend for her teammates.

She is actually the younger sister of the Calamity Queen, Rubia Elstein, a fact which resulted in her losing everything, and caused her to be ostracized by nearly everyone. Her wish is to meet her sister and discover why she betrayed the Elemental Lords and the empire.

  • A-Cup Angst: She is incredibly insecure regarding her small bust. Making fun of her for it is one of the easiest ways to rile her up.
  • Action Girl: While she isn't on Kamito's level, she is an extremely skilled combatant in her own right.
  • Animal Jingoism: As represented by their spirits, Claire has a cat motif and Rinslet has a dog motif. As expected, they often get into fights.
  • Big Sister Worship: She holds her sister, Rubia, in high regard and won't stand for it when someone speaks badly of her.
  • Broken Bird: Her sister's betrayal of the Flame Elemental Lord and the resulting consequences to her parents completely shattered her world and changed the shy, timid girl into the current Fiery Redhead.
  • Catchphrase Insult: "Turn into charcoal!" or alternatively, "Turn to ash!"
  • Caught with Your Pants Down: Has been caught a couple of times massaging her breasts, trying to make them grow, but clearly enjoying herself a little too much.
  • Childhood Friends: Claire and Rinslet have known each other since childhood. They're obviously friends, but both are too proud to admit it.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Does not like seeing Kamito around other girls, whether it's Rinslet, Ellis, or even his contracted spirit Est.
  • Cooldown Hug: Having awakened as the Darkness Queen, she manages to calm Kamito down with one of these, after the later had succumbed to the corrupted Ren Ashdoll's will and awakened as the Demon King. Soon after, she manages to get Rubia to stand down too, when the latter was planning on forcing Kamito to become the Demon King again. A hug was all she needed to get the exhausted Rubia to finally give up on her goal.
  • Covert Pervert: She actually reads and enjoys rather risque novels, usually involving a maiden being corrupted by a devious young lord. Ortlinde even notes that in her dreams, she is often turned into Kamito's Sex Slave.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Red hair and red eyes to match.
  • Cute Little Fangs: She's occasionally drawn with feline fangs to go with her cat motif.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She starts the series as an Ineffectual Loner obsessed with obtaining power to achieve her goals. Kamito's influence helps her become more open towards others, and less obsessed with getting stronger at any cost.
  • Dye or Die: Dyes her hair blonde in order to infiltrate the Imperial Capital during Volume 14.
  • Elemental Eye Colors: Her crimson eyes befit someone Playing with Fire.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: She's a fire spirit user and has long red hair.
  • Elemental Personalities: She's an elementalist using a flame spirit and her character is an exemplar of the Fiery Redhead.
  • Elemental Rivalry: Claire is a fire spirit user, so it's only fitting her self-proclaimed rival Rinslet is an ice spirit user.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: "Lamentable Chest", owing to her lack of feminine assets.
  • Expressive Hair: Her hair tends to flail around when she's angry. This is because elementalists can take on attributes of their contracted spirit.
  • Fiery Redhead: She has red hair and appropriately enough, has a short temper.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Of the two side up variety. They fit her Tsundere character.
  • Godiva Hair: Whenever she's naked, her long hair covers anything important.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: She feels she has no one to rely on, mostly because of her relation to her sister who earned a very bad reputation amongst people after her betrayal and disappearance. Despite that, Kamito sees that there are people who still care about her, such as Rinslet, though they're both too proud to ever admit it.
  • Insufferable Genius: Has shades of this. Despite appearances, she is very diligent when it comes to her studies, and occasionally gives Kamito a hard time over his poor grades.
  • The Leader: She is the leader of Team Scarlet and does a great job coming up with strategies and coordinating her teammates in battle.
  • Lethal Chef: The food she cooks resembles charcoals. She gets better over time.
  • Motivational Kiss: She gives her First Kiss to Kamito to snap him out of his shock after meeting Restia.
  • Naked First Impression: Kamito first meets her when he walks in on her taking a bath at a pond.
  • Naked on Arrival: She's introduced completely naked since she dropped by at a pond to purify herself before facing a spirit.
  • Older Than She Looks: She's sixteen, but her short height and child-like features makes her look younger than her teammates.
  • Playing with Fire: Her primary element is fire.
  • Schmuck Bait: Rinslet tells her that if the boy she likes rubs her breasts, they'll grow bigger. Claire has an Imagine Spot of that happening. Fianna later tells her it's not true.
  • Shed the Family Name: Her full birth name is Claire Elstein. She changed her surname to Rouge because her family fell into ruin after her older sister became the Calamity Queen.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: The reason she acts like a spoiled brat is because she lost everything after her sister's betrayal, and was nearly universally scorned for her relation to Rubia. She's extremely protective of anyone trying to take Kamito away from her, fearing she'd lose him as well. Fortunately Kamito realizes this, and tries not to do anything too rash that would cause her to feel he'd abandon her.
  • Stock Light-Novel Calamity Princess: She has red hair in the signature style, summons a fire elemental, is a noble, serves as the main love interest of the hero, and is often identified with her mysterious sister who is called "Queen Of Calamity". As a child, her sister disgraced her family and Claire herself is stuck with the stigma of trying to live down her sister's destruction of their lives. She considers the hero indebted to her and treats him like a servant, and the two have to participate in a Tournament Arc along with some of their friends and fellow-harem members.
  • The Strategist: Surprisingly for her character type, she has a good head for battle tactics, and repeatedly gives out effective winning strategies.
  • Tiny Tyrannical Girl: Rather short for her age, and known for constantly bossing Kamito around, claiming he's her slave contracted spirit.
  • Tsundere: The biggest example among the girls. She is by far the most likely to attack Kamito for his "perverted" behavior, however there are plenty of moments that show her softer side.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Before Rubia's betrayal happened, she was an adorable little Moe Blob.
  • Vitriolic Best Friends: She and Rinslet fight and argue all the time, but they do care about each other as the Childhood Friends they are. Both will still deny it when asked.
  • What You Are in the Dark: In Volume 9, despite being jealous of Restia, and the fact Restia had tried to kill her in the past, Claire still risks everything to save her, just because she knows how dear Restia is to Kamito. She is even willing to face Luminaris, even though the latter had offered to let her walk away if she just handed Restia over.

    Rinslet Laurenfrost

Rinslet Laurenfrost

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rinslet_laurenfrost_anime.png
Voiced by: Kana Yuuki
Spirit(s): Fenrir (wolf)
Spirit Attribute(s): Ice
Elemental Waffe: Freezing Arrow (bow)

The eldest daughter of the Laurenfrost family. Claire's childhood friend, she is one of the few people at the academy that doesn't resent her for the actions of her sister. Of course, their prideful personalities often lead them to be at odds with each other, so don't expect them to ever admit how much they care about each other.

Despite her haughty demeanor, she is actually a very kind soul who likes taking care of people, be it her teammates, strangers, or her totally useless maid.

Her goal is to win the Blade Dance so that she can ask the Water Elemental Lord to free her sister, who was her encased in a prison of ice after making a mistake while performing a ritual.

  • Animal Jingoism: As represented by their spirits, Rinslet has a dog motif and Claire has a cat motif. As expected, they don't get along very well.
  • Attention Whore: When first introduced, she would go out of her way to place herself in the most conspicuous spot during a battle, so she could properly show off her skill. This, despite being an archer, more suited to attacking her targets while hidden at a distance. She tones it down when she joins Team Scarlet, and becomes more of a team player.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Her whole reason for participating in the Blade Dance is to wish for the Water Elemental Lord to release her sister from her ice prison.
  • The Caretaker: Hilariously, to her own personal maid. Carol is a total klutz who can't even get up from bed without Rinslet waking her up. It's Rinslet who does the daily chores for both of them even though Carol is the servant. When out on a mission, Rinslet's main concern is how Carol will do without her for a few days.
  • Childhood Friends: She has known Claire since they were little girls and despite their denials, it's obvious they're friends.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Though she is usually less prone to choose violence than Ellis and Claire.
  • Conspicuous Gloves: Sometimes depicted wearing a purple archery glove over her right hand. She wears it all the time in the manga.
  • Elemental Rivalry: Rinslet is an ice spirit user and has an persistent rivalry with the fire spirit user Claire.
  • Erotic Dream: Dreams of Kamito doing naughty things to her in Volume 7. Claire is there too.
  • A Friend in Need: Despite their constant fights, she won't forgive anyone who messes with her friend Claire. Her reaction to Claire being bullied is to pull out her bow and point it at the bully's face.
  • Frontline General: When taking the lead during the defense of Winter Gulf Castle, she chooses to position herself atop the castle walls among her soldiers, refusing to lead them from the safety of the castle.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Initial impressions aside, she is actually a very caring person, and is always looking out for other people.
  • Hope Bringer: Her arrival at Winter Gulf Castle while it was under siege by ice dragons reinvigorates the fighting spirit of the soldiers present, specially when she joins them in battle.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Her aim with the bow is ridiculous, and only gets better throughout the Blade Dance. By the later volumes, she is able to shoot down numerous arrows out of the sky, from a considerable distance, at the same time.
  • An Ice Person: Specializes in ice magic.
  • Long-Range Fighter: Her elemental waffe is a long bow which produces ice arrows, so she usually keeps her distance from her targets.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Went through this when she was a child, after risking both her life and Claire's by breaking into the Elstein's sealed library, where a spirit almost kills them both.
  • Ojou: The most high class of the Academy of high class ladies.
  • Playboy Bunny: Dresses like this to cheer Kamito up after he loses Est in Volume 5. Like Ellis and Claire, who dress up as a dog and cat, she is not very happy about it.
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt: She wears white tights as part of her uniform, fitting her Ojou character.
  • Regal Ringlets: She's a noblewoman with long blonde hair that curls into ringlets at the tips.
  • The Rival: She's always competing with Claire, be it in battle skill or love.
  • Supreme Chef: Is really good at cooking. Her cooking is enough to summon an Elemental Lord.
  • Talking in Your Sleep: How we know she was having an Erotic Dream in Volume 7.
  • Tsundere: It's obvious she likes Kamito very much and does care about Claire as a friend, but is too proud and arrogant to admit it.
  • Vitriolic Best Friends: She considers Claire to be her friend and the feeling is mutual, though neither of them will admit it, so they call themselves rivals. As a result, Kamito does comment that Claire, despite what she thinks, does have people who look out for her.

    Ellis Fahrengart

Ellis Fahrengart

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ellis_fahrengart_anime.png
Voiced by: Shizuka Ishigami
Spirit(s): Simorgh (eagle)
Spirit Attribute(s): Wind
Elemental Waffe: Ray Hawk (lance)

A student belonging to Areishia Spirit Academy's Weasel Class, and the current captain of the Academy's Sylphid Knights, a position she inherited after her sister was ousted due to excessive use of force. Her position often puts her at odds with some of the more unruly students, such as Rinslet, and specially Claire.

An earnest girl charged with maintaining order and discipline among the students, as well as protecting the citizens of the nearby Academy Town from hostile spirits, she takes her responsibilities very seriously, but despite the strong image she tries to project, she still has some deep-seated insecurities in regards to whether she lives up to the standards of a knight Velsaria used to embody, and whether she is truly worthy of being called one.

Initially cold towards Kamito due to being a male elementalist, she soon warms up to him after learning what he is really like, and even more so once he manages to save her older sister from her self-destructive path.

  • Clingy Jealous Girl: While she usually uses the pretext of only being interested in public morals when warning Kamito about indulging in indecent behavior with other girls, it's obvious she sometimes wishes he would indulge in such behavior with herself.
  • Covert Pervert: Much like Claire, she is also into novels of a racy nature. At some point, it also becomes pretty clear that she really wants to sleep with Kamito.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Mainly towards Scarlet, but she has a similar reaction towards all cute spirits.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: At first, she was on very bad terms with the members of Team Scarlet. Soon however, circumstances bring them together, and she comes to think of them as friends. She's now the team member who tag teams with Kamito the most.
  • Flight: Can fly thanks to her control over wind.
  • Imagine Spot: Has one in Volume 12 about her feeding Kamito, which quickly turns into an Erotic Dream when Kamito starts licking her. Simorgh needs to peck her back to reality.
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt: Her black tights, which suit her upright personality.
  • Razor Wind: Her spear elemental waffe is capable of doing this, as even if you were to evade her attacks, you can still be cut by her wind.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: Usually has her hair up in a high ponytail.
  • Tsundere: She's initially hostile towards Kamito and is quick to jump to conclusions when she thinks he's being a pervert, but she blushes way too easily when he's nice to her.
  • The Worf Effect: Despite being noted as a strong and skilled knight, she is the member of Team Scarlet most often hurt or defeated to show how serious the situation is.

    Fianna Ray Ordesia

Fianna Ray Ordesia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fianna_ray_ordesia_anime_6.png
Voiced by: Saori Onishi
Spirit(s): Georgios (knight)
Spirit Attribute(s): Holy
Elemental Waffe: Save The Queen (rapier)

The Ordesia Empire's second princess. Originally one of the highest-ranked princess maidens in the Divine Ritual Institute, she was expected to take over as Fire Queen in case Rubia, her senior and dear friend, became unable to fulfill her role. However, for reasons unknown to the world at large, she did not become the Fire Queen following Rubia's betrayal, and was thus unable to appease the Fire Elemental Lord's anger towards her homeland.

Disinherited by her parents and subjected to the scorn of the court due to her failure, Fianna became largely despondent towards life, just going through the motions until the day she met Kamito, and discovering his secret of being a male elementalist, one participating in the Blade Dance by pretending to be a girl on top of that. In the present day, once news reach her of Kamito being admitted into Areishia Spirit Academy, she transfers to the Academy herself in order to join Kamito's team for the upcoming Blade Dance, in the hopes she'll be able to accomplish her wish. That, and so she can make Kamito fall in love with her, as she did for him three years ago.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Described in the light novel as having black hair, but is changed to a purple color for the anime adaptation. Zigzagged, because her hair is often shown as purple in colored illustrations.
  • Beneath the Mask: Underneath all the teasing and mature attitude lies an insecure young girl hurting from her failures.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Despite her quirks and her often indecent behavior, she is almost unrivaled when it comes to spirit rituals. Several characters note her reputation as a Queen candidate is more than earned.
  • Disinherited Child: Due to her failure to take over as the Fire Queen following Rubia's betrayal, she was unable to do anything to appease the Fire Elemental Lord who was wreaking havoc across Ordesia. As a result, she was disinherited by the royal family, and treated as a nuisance by most members of the court.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: The Lost Queen is one to her.
  • Eyes Out of Sight: In the manga, her bangs cover most of her face as a child, instead of having Girlish Pigtails. It contributes to Kamito not recognizing her just a few years after meeting her.
  • Fake Boobs: She uses breast pads, partly to hide her bloodstone, and partly to facilitate her plan to seduce Kamito, since she heard men like big breasts. Its implied she keeps using them even after losing the bloodstone and her plan being found out.
  • The Gadfly: She really loves to tease Kamito, particularly in front of Claire to provoke the latter into getting mad.
  • Girlish Pigtails: When Kamito met her, she was wearing twin tails.
  • Hates Their Parent: Doesn't have the highest opinion of her parents, since they also showed her nothing but scorn for failing to appease the Fire Elemental Lord's anger when she was a child.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: One of the reasons for her wanting to join Team Scarlet. She thought that if anyone would accept an outcast like the Lost Queen, it would be people like the sister of the Calamity Queen, or the only male elementalist.
  • Intimate Healing: Because Kamito's body naturally rejects holy magic, even when it is related to healing, she is forced to do this when treating him for it to have any effect. Not that she minds.
  • Lethal Chef: Her cooking is terrible, but she normally adds sleeping medicine so her unfortunate victim never really notices.
    • Even when closely supervised to make sure she does everything right, the dish can ultimately end up just being completely tasteless, apparently as a result of her feelings influencing the result, which isn't uncommon among princess maidens, though usually not to such an extent.
  • The Load: Even after restoring her connection with Georgios, she considers herself to be this in Team Scarlet because she isn't of much use in direct combat, due to her lack of combat training. As a result, she starts secretly trying to force Georgios' elemental waffe to manifest.
    • Note however, that her comrades don't consider her this at all, as her ritual dancing and other skills she picked up at the Divine Ritual Institute prove invaluable to the team during the Blade Dance.
  • Lord Country: She's a princess of the Ordesia Empire and has Ordesia as her last name.
  • My Greatest Failure: Being unable to even slow down Rubia when she stole Laevateinn four years in the past, leading to a catastrophe falling upon the empire and Fianna's connection with Georgios being severed.
  • New Transfer Student: She immediately transfers to the Areishia Spirit Academy the moment she learns that a newly discovered male elementalist is attending, knowing it must be Kamito.
  • Rescue Romance: She fell in love with Kamito when he rescued her in the forest several years earlier.
  • Royal Rapier: Her elemental waffe, but it is not used for direct combat.
  • Secret-Keeper: She's one of the few people who knows that Kamito is actually Ren Ashbell. Doesn't stop her from mercilessly teasing him about it though.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Teases Kamito at every opportunity by getting close to him and wearing revealing clothing, though she isn't completely shameless, and sometimes gets embarrassed herself when she takes it too far.
  • She Is All Grown Up: Why Kamito failed to recognize her at first.
  • Squishy Wizard: Has no actual direct combat training. She gets tired after just running for a short time and relies completely on Georgios and her friends to protect her.
  • The Tease: Towards Kamito.
  • Transfer Student Uniform: She wears the Divine Ritual Institute uniform instead of Areishia Spirit Academy's. According to the manga, she did receive the Academy's uniform eventually, but decided to remain wearing her old one, to show all those that looked down on her in the past that she is back.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: She reveals to Claire and Kamito that she lost her contracted spirit a few years back, and was hoping to win the latest Blade Dance in order to regain it. However, that proves unnecessary after her strong desire to protect Kamito from Jio Inzagi gives her the necessary motivation to reconnect with Georgios, which allows them to defeat Jio.

Team Scarlet's Spirits

    Restia

Restia Ashdoll

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/restia_anime.jpg
Voiced by: Yōko Hikasa

The most powerful darkness spirit in the world, taking the form of a teenage girl. Kamito's previous contracted spirit, her elemental waffe is the powerful Vorpal Sword, which Ren Ashbell used to cut through all opponents during the previous Blade Dance. However, following their victory three years ago, she disappeared for reasons unknown. Reuniting with her is Kamito's main goal.

  • Adaptational Villainy: In the anime, she willingly allows Jio to wield her as the Vorpal Sword in order to push Kamito. In the light novel, Jio forces her using Nebuchadnezzar.
  • Anthropomorphic Personification: She is actually the embodiment of the will of Ren Ashdoll, the Darkness Elemental Lord. Her goal is to ensure the awakening of the vessel of Ren Ashdoll's power, which is currently Kamito.
  • Anti-Magic: Her black dress actually possesses powerful anti-magic properties, but is completely powerless against Holy Elemental attacks.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Uses Est's “I am your sword. Your wish is my command” at one point, much to Est's irritation.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Acts like this around Est, Kamito's second contracted spirit.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Despite everything she does, she ultimately wants to save both Kamito and the world.
  • Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors: As a darkness spirit, she is naturally weak against holy attacks.
  • Feather Flechettes: Can shoot out her wings' feathers.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She uses Est to kill herself so that Kamito wouldn't get corrupted by the Otherworldly Darkness.
  • Identity Amnesia: Following the events at the Elemental Lords' throne room, she is transported to the Laurenfrost region with no memories of anything other than her name.
  • Lady of Black Magic: She is the most powerful darkness spirit and can use the highest levels of darkness magic.
  • Lap Pillow: She enjoys doing this for Kamito.
  • Morph Weapon: Can fully change her shape into any type of sword in order to suit whatever her master needs.
  • Not So Above It All: Even she is powerless before Rinslet's cooking, stuffing her face the first time she tastes her pancakes.
  • Perpetual Molt: She is usually surrounded by the black feathers falling from her wings.
  • Purple Is the New Black: Her dress is repeatedly described as black in the narration, yet it is only ever portrayed as purple in illustrations and adaptations.
  • Red Baron: Known as the Vorpal Sword.
  • Shock and Awe: Her darkness element is most often manifested as black lightning. Most prominently Vorpal Blast, which is considered Ren Ashbell's signature move.
  • Shout-Out Theme Naming: The name of her elemental waffe, Vorpal Sword, is a phrase used by Lewis Carroll in his poem "Jabberwocky".
  • Sink or Swim Mentor: She wants to get Kamito back to his prime and goes about it by teaming up with or manipulating his immediate antagonists. However, she drops this role when Rubia and Laevateinn prove to be unbeatable without her and Est's combined power.
  • There's No Kill like Overkill: Uses Hell Blast, the most powerful darkness spell, for everyone including elementalists, demons, and degenerated spirit ghosts. Kamito describes her as completely merciless.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: The reason she wanted Kamito to awaken as the Demon King was to use his powers to save the Elemental Lords from the Otherwordly Darkness. She was actually racing against time to awaken him, given that it was only a matter of time before Ren Ashdoll's contaminated will awakened, which would have caused the Demon King to become a pawn to the Otherwordly Darkness as well.
  • Winged Humanoid: Black wings sprout from her back, though she can do away with them at will.

    Est

Terminus Est/"Est"note

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/terminus_est_anime.png
Voiced by: Ai Kakuma

A steel sword spirit that takes the form of a young girl. She was sealed within a sword when Claire tries to form a contract with her at the beginning of the series. She fails, and Kamito is forced to form a contract instead to save her.

Rumor has it she is the legendary Demon Slayer, the former contracted spirit of the Sacred Maiden Areishia, used to vanquish Demon King Solomon millennia ago. While Kamito and Claire disregard these rumors at first, both because Est lost her memories when Kamito made a contract with her and because there are plenty of so-called Demon Slayers the world over, they are eventually proven true.

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: Especially against other swords, as Est is a steel sword spirit of the highest class. Most opposing swords are destroyed by her on contact.
  • Accidental Murder: Est unknowingly killed Areishia Idriss, her previous master, when she absorbed all of Est's stored curses throughout the years.
  • Anti-Magic: Est has the ability to completely negate and repel magic. Everything she negates is actually absorbed into herself, and once it reaches a certain point, will be transferred to her master, killing them.
  • Bedmate Reveal: When he wakes up in the morning, Kamito usually discovers Est sleeping next to him almost completely naked (almost, in that she's wearing thigh-high socks).
  • BFS: Can turn into this.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Due to her incomplete contract, she can't even bring out 1/10th of her true power. Just note that even in her current state, she's still fully capable of defeating most spirits in one hit, and negating all but the most powerful spells. It's been stated that at her full power, even the Elemental Lords were terrified of her.
  • Cast from Hit Points: Her powers gradually becomes this for her master.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: While she usually doesn't mind the other girls, Restia really brings out this side of her, since Kamito is her master.
  • The Dreaded: Restia mentions that even she would not dare make fun of Est if she was her original Sacred Sword self. Even the Elemental Lords are terrified of her.
  • Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors: As a Steel Elemental Spirit, she naturally have a harder time against Shield Elemental Spirits. "A harder time" as in it takes a little more effort for her to cut through them.
  • Emotionless Girl: She rarely shows any emotions on her face, though Kamito eventually learns to red her easily.
  • Establishing Character Moment: When she first shows up in human form, Kamito sees her completely naked except for some thigh-high stockings. Later Rinslet has Fenrir attack him, only for Est to then put the wolf in its place. She also ends up bending Ellis's sword after she assumes he's being a playboy with a new girl.
  • Godiva Hair: She has a habit of wearing nothing but knee-high socks, with only her hair covering her body.
  • I Have Many Names: Her elemental waffe form is mainly known as Terminus Est, but is also called the Sacred Sword of Severian, and Demon Slayer. After inherenting Restia's power, her sword form gains the names Terminus Est Zwei and Demon King's Sword when using it.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: She doesn't get why Kamito says it's wrong for her to wear nothing but thigh-high socks. After all, her legs are clothed so she's not showing anything important.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Due to her incomplete contract with Kamito, her memories are fragmented and she can't recall much of her past.
  • Legendary Weapon: Est is potentially The Sacred Sword of Severian, the legendary sword that Areishia Idriss once used to defeat the Demon King. However, Kamito notes that there are rumors of the Sacred Sword's possible location from all over the world. She really is the Sacred Sword.
  • Light Is Not Good: Est certainly is good, the way her powers work on the other hand...
  • Morph Weapon: Can freely change shape into any type of sword in order to suit her master's needs.
  • Mystical White Hair: She has white hair to show her non-human nature and great power as a legendary steel spirit.
  • Naked First Impression: When she appears to Kamito in human form, she's wearing nothing but knee-high socks.
  • Naked on Arrival: Her human form first appears naked in bed with Kamito.
  • The Needless: As a spirit, she doesn't need to consume human foods. Her desire to eat is due to the influence of her previous master, Areishia.
  • No-Sell: Spirit magic is useless on her, as she has the most powerful anti-magic attribute.
  • Our Nudity Is Different: She considers her legs to be the only private regions of her body. She'll remove the rest of her clothing without a second thought, but suggestions that she remove her thigh-high stockings will bring immediate reprisal for perversion, and in some cases death threats.
  • Red Baron: Known as the Demon Slayer.
  • Rei Ayanami Expy: She has white hair and milky white skin, rarely shows emotions, has a strange notion of nudity, is not actually human and displays Undying Loyalty for the main character.
  • Serious Business: In her human form, she has no issues being completely naked other than wearing some thigh-high stockings. But if she suspects Kamito wants her to take those off, she acts as if he were asking a normal girl to strip off her underwear. He does lampshade the silliness of that logic.
  • Shout-Out Theme Naming: Her name Terminus Est comes from the executioner's sword wielded by Severian, the protagonist of the tetralogy novel series The Book of the New Sun written by Gene Wolfe.
  • Sleeps in the Nude: She sleeps at Kamito's bed while wearing nothing but her socks.
  • Split Personality: As a result of her incomplete contract with Kamito, Est was split into two personalities. The current Est, with limited recollection of her past, and Sacred Sword Est, her past self.
  • Sweet Tooth: Est loves to eat sweets. Once, she ordered and consumed all the sweets on a restaurant menu.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Kamito. Her original self had this to Areishia as well. As they have become separate entities, Est's loyalty is now totally with Kamito. To drive this home, she declared that if Kamito became the Demon King, then she would be the Demon King's sword rather than betray him.
  • Unholy Holy Sword: She's actually a demon sword. All the resentment/curses from the spirits slain by Est are absorbed by her and will eventually pass it onto her master. In the past, she unknowingly killed her previous master, Areishia Idriss and as a result, sealed herself in seclusion in order to never harm anyone ever again. Despite this, Kamito accepted Est, and upon victory in the Blade Dance, plans on using his wish to truly turn Est into a sacred sword.

  • Big Friendly Dog: He can be very affectionate towards his mistress and the people he trusts.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: After being assimilated by Bandersnatch, he is turned into Sjora's contracted spirit, and made to do her bidding.
  • Paint It Black: Being forced into Sjora's servitude somehow causes his fur to turn black.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: Fenrir's name comes from the monstrous wolf in Norse Mythology, a son of Loki, originally kept as a guard dog by the leader of the gods, Odin feared the prophesy which stated that Fenrir would devour him during the Ragnarok.
  • Stomach of Holding: Can store items in his stomach.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Was easily beaten in a flashback set ten years in the past by an inferior spirit, due to Rinslet's inexperience as an elementalist.

Areishia Spirit Academy

Faculty

    Greyworth Ciel Mais

Greyworth Ciel Mais

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/an1_022.png
Voiced by: Mai Nakahara
The principal of Areishia Spirit Academy. Winner of a previous Blade Dance and former #1 of the Numbers. Taught Kamito her Absolute Blade Arts.
  • Assassin Outclassin': Has so many enemies that back when she lived in the imperial capital, there would be attempts on her life daily. They all failed miserably.
    • It was during one such attempt that she met Kamito, who had taken the job to kill her hoping it would help him release Restia from the ring she was sealed in.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In Volume 18. After regaining her memories and breaking free from Alexandros's control, she aids Kamito in destroying an Otherworldly Angel.
  • Big Good: Team Scarlet's main benefactor, her goal is to prevent another large scale conflict from breaking out between nations, like the Ranbal War from her youth.
  • Blood Knight: After being aged down and falling under the control of the Holy Kingdom, the only emotion she expresses most of the time is bloodlust.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: At the end of Volume 14, she's being controlled by Millennia Sanctus.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Losses her abilities as an Elementalist after teaching Kamito Absolute Blade Arts-Final Form, Last Strike. At least until the Holy Kingdom of Lugia got their hands on her.
  • Cool Sword: Her elemental waffe, Storm Bringer.
  • The Dreaded: There isn't a person in the continent who doesn't know about Greyworth. Her name alone inspires fear and respect in friend and enemy alike.
  • Fountain of Youth: She can turn into her 15 year old self thanks to the wish she made after winning a previous Blade Dance.
  • High-Class Glass: She wears a monocle that gives her the look of a mature and intellectual woman, as a headmistress should have.
  • Parental Substitute: Is one for Kamito. While Restia taught him about many subjects regarding the world itself, it was Greyworth who taught him basic knowledge on how to live in society.
  • Red Baron: Known as the Dusk Witch.
  • Retired Badass: A former member of the Numbers.
  • Sink or Swim Mentor: To a greater degree than Restia. Kamito still bitterly recalls all the times he almost died while undergoing training under her.
  • Supernatural Martial Arts: The Absolute Blade Arts. She was the one who taught them to Kamito.
  • The Tease: Derives no small amount of joy in teasing Kamito with suggestive words and actions.
  • Worf Had the Flu: After their battle in front of the Stronghold, Kamito notes he only managed to defeat her because his spirits, Restia and Est, were much more powerful than the one she was using at the time, Vlad Dracul. Had she been using her original spirit, Dīs Pater, the battle would have ended very differently.
  • World's Best Warrior: As the creator of the Absolute Blade Arts, and contractor of a demon spirit, which are infamous for being borderline impossible for a human to commune with, she is widely considered the most powerful elementalist in the setting. When she is controlled by the Holy Kingdom and aged down back to her teenage self, when she was in her prime, she proves to be utterly implacable in battle, completely dominating Kamito while using less than a third of her strength.

  • Dirty Cop: Until Ellis booted them from the Sylphid Knights.
  • Full-Boar Action: The Demon Mirror spirit became a boar with a shell when it's Elementalist was affected by the Cursed Armament Seal. Averted in the anime where it just becomes a more demonic looking version of itself.
  • Hidden Depths: It is learned in the 3rd Volume that they were former members of the Sylphid Knights who were expelled by Ellis for their unknightly conduct.
  • Jerkass: Often to Claire. It's eventually revealed she was far from their only victim, as they used to abuse their authority over the other students.
  • The Marvelous Deer: The adamantine spirit became this when it's elementalist was affected by the Cursed Armament Seal.
    • Averted in the anime where it just becomes a more demonic looking version of itself.
  • No Name Given: Both are only identified by their contracted spirits.

  • Badass Cape: Wears a pure white cape, which signifies her position as the number one elementalist in the academy.
  • Brought Down to Normal: After Kamito defeats her for the second time and removes the Cursed Armament Seal from her body, she ended up losing all her abilities as an elementalist. It may be years before her power returned, if it ever will.
  • The Bus Came Back: After her defeat in Volume 3, she was sent to Balsas Prison. She reappears 10 volumes later in Volume 13, being imprisoned next to Jio Inzagi and Vivian Melosa.
  • Covert Pervert: When Rubia arranges for Team Scarlet to act as Kamito's concubines so he can act as a Demon King, Velsaria demands to know why she wasn't chosen for that role too, though she tries to deny that she actually wanted to be a part of it.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: She serves as one at the end of the anime and Volume 3, being the last opponent Team Scarlet must defeat to qualify for the finals.
  • Happily Adopted: She was adopted into the Fahrengart family and Ellis treats her like her real older sister.
  • Powered Armor: What her elemental waffe, Silent Fortress, originally took the form of three years ago.
  • Power at a Price: In order to gain more power and face Ren Ashbell again, she ended up using a Cursed Armament Seal. While it did end up greatly increasing her power, it also rapidly destroyed her body and altered her personality.
  • Secret-Keeper: She realized that Kamito is really Ren Ashbell after being defeated by him a second time.
  • Shipper on Deck: Unsurprisingly, she ships her sister and Kamito.
  • Shoulder Cannon: The original weapons of her elemental waffe.
  • Single-Stroke Battle: How she lost against Ren Ashbellnote  three years ago.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Her anger towards Ren Ashbellnote  wasn't so much losing to her, but rather because she didn't even so much as acknowledged her as her opponent.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: After losing to Ren Ashbellnote . The Cursed Armament Seal she used on her body made her progressively colder and more ruthless.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Played for Laughs. When they reunite, she expects Ellis and Kamito to have only held hands at most and even then, she considers that to be a swift development in their relationship. This isn't the case due to this being an ecchi harem series.

She decides for a set of underwear which could also double as swimwear. She likes it enough to wear it on special occasions.
  • Lady of War: One of Dracunia's mightiest warriors, noble and disciplined like a true soldier.
  • More than Mind Control: She already wanted to face Kamito during the Blade Dance, but the day before it starts Rubia puts her in a trance to keep her Dragon's Blood activated and make her want to face Kamito at any cost.
  • Never Bareheaded: She is almost always wearing a beret.
  • Red Baron: The Dragon Princess.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: When her Dragon's Blood manifests.
  • Sanity Has Advantages: As Kamito notes, she is actually a better warrior when not under the influence of her Dragon's Blood, as she can think more clearly and adapt more quickly in battle.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: She is a knight first and foremost, and is usually dressed in her country's military uniform. That being said, she likes wearing cute clothes on her time off, and loves high-quality dolls.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: She becomes significantly more easygoing and friendly over time, specially towards Kamito.
  • Unknowingly in Love: Zigzagged. She spends Volume 8 not understanding why she keeps thinking about Kamito, and why she gets so flustered about it. She seems to figure out she has a crush on him by the end of the volume, but Volume 15 reveals she actually came to the conclusion that she felt the an instinctive urge to mate with him due to her Dragon Blood, and tries to act on said urge when they are alone on the dragondola. After her attempt, however, she realizes that what she feels is more than that, but can't place her finger on what exactly it is.
  • The Worf Effect: One of the most powerful candidates for the Blade Dance, she is effortlessly beaten by Ren Ashbell during a short confrontation, showing just how dangerous she can be.

  • Making a Splash: Her Black Tortoise is a water spirit.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Decides to face Sjora’s horde of demon spirits by herself to give Linfa and Shao time to escape. Unfortunately this results in Hakua being eliminated as well, since Rao was carrying her.
  • The Smart Guy: Comes across as this for her team, since Linfa and Hakua are rather immature, and Shao is only looking for a good fight. Rao will try to follow the most logic course of action.

Holy Kingdom of Lugia

Sacred Spirit Knights

While all three teams sent by Lugia are known as the Sacred Spirit Knights, their top team, which includes their ace Luminaris, is called Sthal Loewe. The other two teams were sent mostly to ensure Sthal Loewe would make it to the finals.

Sthal Loewe

    Luminaris Saint Leisched

Luminaris Saint Leisched

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/luminaris2.jpg
Leader of the Sacred Spirit Knights. During the previous Blade Dance, she made it to the final round only to be defeated by Kamito as Ren Ashbell, who often regards her as his strongest opponent.
  • Enemy Mine: In the 13th Volume, she fought alongside Kamito still unaware that he was the Ren Ashbell that defeated her.
  • Knight Templar: She will follow the orders of her nation without question. During the Blade Dance, she was ordered to kill Restia and attempted to do so, despite not knowing the reason and that doing so would go against the rules of the Blade Dance.
  • Red Baron: The Paladin.
  • Red Herring: Kamito would mention in nearly every volume that during the previous Blade Dance, she was by far his toughest opponent and that he's not eager to have to face her again. Even an encounter with another team from the Sacred Spirit Knights taunted him about facing her. Despite all this foreshadowing, not only do they not fight during the entire Blade Dance, they never even encountered one another until the closing ceremony. Lampshaded before Scarlet defeats her, as she expresses her dismay that she cannot be defeated here and she still needs to resume her duel with Ren Ashbell and win the Blade Dance.
  • The Unfought: To Kamito in the current Blade Dance. Despite nearly every volume giving mention to her and everything foreshadowing their upcoming battle. Finally averted in Volume 20, where she realizes Ren is Kamito and challenges him.
  • The Worf Effect: After being mentioned as Kamito's strongest opponent, spending most of a volume defeating Restia and hunting down/curb stomping Claire, she was almost immediately defeated to show off the power of the awakened Scarlet.
  • This Cannot Be!: Before being defeated by the awakened Scarlet, she expresses her dismay that she cannot be defeated now, since she still needs to resume her duel with Ren Ashbell and win the Blade Dance.

Principality of Rossvale

Rupture Division

    Milla Basset

Milla Basset

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/milla_bassett.png

An elementalist from the Principality of Rossvale whose teammates were easily taken out by Nephentes Lore and Restia.

  • Adopt-a-Servant: She is taken in by the Laurenfrost family to be Mireille's personal maid. Being under the protection of one of Ordesia's most prominent noble families keeps the small country of Rossvale from targeting her for deserting, and considering just how well the Laurenfrosts treat their maids, this is ultimately a great deal for her.
  • Brainy Brunette: She is very knowledgeable about many subjects, and even takes it upon herself to do some research to help Team Scarlet during the finals of the Blade Dance.
  • Character Development: Thanks to Kamito and the rest of Team Scarlet, she becomes to express her emotions and care about others again.
  • Covert Pervert: According to Mireille, she smells Kamito's sheets when changing them, and her closet is full of erotic clothing she considered wearing in front of Kamito.
  • Dragged by the Collar: How she often deals with Mireille when the latter tries to laze off.
  • Emotionless Girl: Much like Kamito before Restia came along, she considers herself a tool to accomplish a mission.
  • Eye Scream: When unleashing her spirit through Team Scarlet's fortress, the stress is so great that it causes her eye to crack and bleed.
  • Magical Eye: She's the holder of the Demon Sealing Eye, a special eye that can seal powerful spirits. Only descendants from certain lineages of elementalists have a chance of being born with it.
  • Meido: What she becomes after being taken in by the Laurenfrost family. Kamito is quick to note that she exceeds at her new job, specially in comparison to Carol.
  • Modesty Towel: When entering a hot spring which, unknown to her, Kamito had already entered.
  • Rei Ayanami Expy: An Emotionless Girl with a Magical Eye, No Social Skills, and a Dark and Troubled Past.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: She is only thirteen, but has been trained to act like a professional operative for her country. During their first meeting, she actually tried to seduce Kamito in order to secure an alliance with Team Scarlet.
  • Tyke Bomb: As a result of her eye, her parents sold her to the authorities when she was a little girl. She was then trained to bury her emotions in order to make her a more effective tool, all in order to win the Blade Dance.

Alphas Theocracy

Team Inferno/League Of Inferno

    General
  • Big Damn Heroes: They help Kamito and his friends escape from prison in Volume 14.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Ren Ashbell insists that this is what they are, since each of them is only working towards their own objectives. The exception is Lily, who has sworn her loyalty towards Ren Ashbell herself.
  • Meaningful Rename: Following their defeat at the Blade Dance tournament, Team Inferno is disassembled and reforged into the League Of Inferno, made up of the remaining members of Team Inferno, as well as the Cardinal's remaining resources, as well as some new recruits.
  • No Honor Among Thieves: There isn't much of a sense of camaraderie within the team, with most members acting for the sake of their own goals, and willing to betray the others if necessary. Only Lily is completely devoted to the Cardinal. Things start to change once Nephentes Lore is destroyed, and Sjora leaves the team. The remaining members become closer.

    Ren Ashbell/The Cardinal

Rubia Elstein/Ren Ashbell/The Cardinal

An elementalist using Kamito's Ren Ashbell identity and is participating in the next Blade Dance. One of Kamito's objectives in the upcoming Blade Dance is to figure out who she is, and what she's up to.

She is soon revealed to be Rubia Elstein, Claire's older sister, and the one who brought the Fire Elemental Lord's wrath upon Ordesia four years ago. Her goal is revealed to be to awaken Kamito as the Demon King and use him to destroy the Elemental Lords, which would cause untold calamity to befall both Astral Zero and the human world. Horrendous as it sounds, it soon becomes clear that such an outcome would probably be preferable to the alternative…

  • Arc Villain: She is the main antagonist during the Blade Dance festival.
  • Big Bad: She is effectively the main villain for the first half of the series, up until the point she is defeated at the climax of the Blade Dance festival.
  • Brought Down to Badass: After her contract with Laevateinn was severed, she lost all her ability as an Elementalist but still retained her Elstein Flames. Claire sealing the Darkness Elemental Lord's power within Kamito also greatly reduced her power.
  • Catchphrase: Do you want to be turned into charcoal?
  • Enemy Mine: She's made alliances with many groups that she knows have differing agendas from her and ends up getting backstabbed a lot, like with the Alphas Theocracy and Murders.
  • Evil Stole My Faith: She started losing faith in the Elemental Lords after the destruction of the small town of Dylus, which was soon followed by numerous similar incidents. Her faith was on the verge of shattering completely after the Flame Elemental Lord demanded Claire's sacrifice, and was completely lost after witnessing the corruption on the Flame Elemental Lord's throne.
  • Fiery Redhead: Her true hair color is red, and there is an undeniable undercurrent of passion underneath her cold exterior.
  • Lady of War: As the result of being the Sacred Maiden, she is automatically granted the full combat skills needed to battle the Demon King.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: While she did have Claire Brainwashed, Sjora notes that Rubia didn't completely destroy her mind in the process to make her a more malleable pawn, which allowed Fianna and Scarlet to undo the brainwashing and bring Claire back from the brink.
  • Pet the Dog: She's sympathetic to the plight of the Alphas Theocracy refugees who were persecuted by Sjora Kahn, since their situation reminds her of the suffering that Elstein's citizens went through.
  • Red Baron: The Calamity Queen.
  • Reincarnation: She is the reincarnation of the Sacred Maiden, a power bestowed by the Five Great Elemental Lords in response to the Demon King's awakening.
  • Rescue Romance: Falls for Kamito after he saved her from Laevateinn, though it takes her a while to realize it.
  • Shoot the Shaggy Dog: She gave up everything and was willing to lose both Claire and her own life in order to revive the Demon King. She succeeded momentarily, but then it is all abruptly undone essentially because Claire refuses to cooperate. Then she throws everything she has at Kamito in a last-ditch effort to re-awaken him, and he kicks her ass without the Demon King's power. Jerkass she may be, but everything she had fought for was unraveled in front of her because Claire and Kamito basically said "no".
  • Strong as They Need to Be: As the reincarnation of the Sacred Maiden, her strength is directly proportional to the power of the current Demon King. As the Demon King grows in power, so will her own. On the other hand, the weaker the Demon King becomes, the weaker she will become in turn.
  • Walking Spoiler: She is eventually revealed to be Rubia Elstein, the Calamity Queen and Claire's older sister. Her motives and actions are all related to everything that is going on in the story.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: She realized the insanity of the Elemental Lords along with the corruption and seeks to awaken Kamito, the current incarnation of Ren Ashdoll so that he may kill them and separate the spirits from the human world. The resulting chaos will possibly kill millions of people, but humanity would be saved as a result.
  • Wild Card: While she and her group become more benevolent towards Kamito, she's still willing to work with just about anybody for the sake of defeating the Otherworldly Darkness, including Murders and Jio.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: She has a lot of Cursed Armament Seals on her body in order to control Laevateinn, which may explain her drastic descent into ruthlessness not unlike Velsaria's.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: After her defeat in the Blade Dance, Hierarch-possessed Sjora Kahn decided to silence her, but was fortunately stopped by Muir and Lily.

    Muir Alenstarl

Muir Alenstarl

A former Instructional School assassin and member of Kamito's assassination unit. After being defeated by Rubia Elstein four years ago, Muir decided to join hands with her in the hopes of being reunited with Kamito.

  • Creepy Blue Eyes: Her eyes are noted to be blue, and she is prone to having a Death Glare on them.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She was considered a blessing in her hometown due to being born with talent as an elementalist despite her parents not being nobility. However, when the villagers tried to have her commune with their guardian spirit, Muir's Jester Vice drove it insane and caused a disaster. Cast out, she was found by the Instructional School, which trained her as a weapon.
  • Defusing the Tyke-Bomb: After her defeat at the Cross Fire, Kamito starts working on reducing Muir’s worst tendencies.
  • Foil: Noted by Rinslet to be a lot how Claire was up until recently. Like a small animal baring their fangs at a world that has been cruel to them, while still deeply attached to an older sibling figure they were separated from. Ellis notes they also have similar hairstyles.
  • Girlish Pigtails: How she styles her hair.
  • Mage Born of Muggles: Unlike most other elementalists in the series, she comes from a peasant family.
  • Red Baron: Nicknamed "Monster" in the instructional school.
  • Redemption Rejection: Turns down Kamito’s offer to return with him to the empire, as someone like her only belongs in the shadows.
  • Tyke Bomb: One of dozens created by the Instructional School.
  • Yandere: Big time toward Kamito. She is obsessed with keeping him to herself, and is willing to kill anyone that might get between them. Fortunately, she learns to tone it down over time.

  • Pointy Ears: They even stick out when she is wearing a hood.
  • Red Baron: Nicknamed "Venom" in the Instructional School.
  • Undying Loyalty: Towards Rubia. Even after the latter suffers a crushing defeat, and has most of her resources stripped away, Lily's loyalty remains steadfast.

  • Power Limiter: His black armor is actually there to contain his power.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Has two red lights coming from his eye sockets.

  • Bait-and-Switch: She is the one that froze Judia Laurenfrost in ice four years ago. At first, it seemed she froze Judia due to a failure in the ritual she was performing. Then, once the truth of the Elemental Lords' is revealed, it appears as though she froze her due to the Otherworldly Drakness' influence. The end of Volume 13 then reveals that, at the time, Iseria was still holding on to the last of her sanity, and had frozen Judia out of her own will, once she became infected by the Otherworldly Darkness while performing the ritual.

  • Seeing Through Another's Eyes: Once she is allied with Team Scarlet, she is able to communicate with them by possessing Fenrir's body.

    Jio Inzagi

Jio Inzagi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jio_inzagi_anime.jpg

A former Instructional School orphan.

  • Adaptational Curves: Noticeably more muscled in the manga.
  • Adaptational Sympathy: The manga goes to great lengths to flesh out his character. He was traumatized as a kid by Kamito's role in his mentor's death, he is implied to have feelings for Restia (though even that might be a reflection of his desire to surpass Kamito), and his insecurities regarding his failure to be the next Demon King are given a greater amount of focus.
  • Always Someone Better: Refuses to acknowledge Kamito as the Demon King's successor.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Had his arm cut off by Kamito at the end of Volume 2.
  • The Bus Came Back: He returns 11 volumes later in Volume 13.
  • Butt-Monkey: Gets this treatment when arguing with Team Inferno.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Gave these to the Sylphid Knights, as well as Team Scarlet initially.
  • Evil Redhead: Only in the anime.
  • Freudian Excuse: Only shown in the manga. Back in the Instructional School, one of the instructors invested a lot of time and effort into making Jio the next Demon King. However, Kamito and Muir ended up outranking him, causing his instructor to lash out against Kamito and being forced to fall to his death as a result. After that, Jio harbored a grudge against Kamito and wanted to upstage him in order to avenge his instructor.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Refuses to believe that Kamito is better than him, as well as him being the true Demon King successor.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: He wants to be the Demon King in order to surpass Kamito. In the manga, his secondary motivation is to avenge his master.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Restia inflicted this on him to prevent him from leaking info on Kamito, and to make it harder for him to take revenge.
  • Put on a Bus: Was sent to Balsas Prison after being arrested in Volume 2.
  • Stockholm Syndrome: In the manga, Jio's instructor seems to treat him more like a trophy than an actual human, which is likely par for the course in the Instructional School. Despite that, this trope is in play due to the instructor raising and praising Jio.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: He's the first opponent Kamito and the others face off against that actually gives them a hard time in a fight. It takes their entire group working together to defeat him.

  • Greater-Scope Villain: Subverted. While he was responsible for ravaging the world with war in the past and his decisions ended up creating a horrible legacy for future Demon Kings, he was manipulated by Alexandros.
  • Heel Realization: The shady merchant, Safian, is actually a representation of his regret, which explains why he was helpful to Kamito and Team Scarlet.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: In The Bible, Solomon is the name of a king of Israel who was renowned for his wisdom and wealth.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Amusingly, he and Jio like the design of the Demon King's Mask while most other characters are creeped out by it.

  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: He tried to elope with an elf girl, Iris, but his kingdom saw that as treason and killed his new family. In response, he went to war with the kingdom, only to be captured and subjected to Cold-Blooded Torture to the point of hating humanity. Alexander then offers to revive Iris in exchange for bringing chaos and destruction upon the world, which Solomon accepted, and his first targets were the rulers and citizens of the kingdom.
