  • Adaptation Dye-Job:
    • Estonia has light blond hair and green eyes in the manga, but dark blond hair and deep blue eyes in the anime. Like with most characters, The Beautiful World fixed this.
    • Latvia is generally depicted with light blond hair and violet eyes in the manga, but has dark blond hair and bright blue eyes in the anime. His hair color was changed to a lighter sandy blond in the fifth season, though he kept the blue eyes.
    • Lithuania's hair is much lighter colored in the anime than it is in the manga, and his eyes were blue for the first four seasons. His color scheme was changed in the fifth season to be closer to the manga, where his eyes are green.
    • Belarus is best known for being a platinum blonde in the manga illustrations and assorted merchandise, though the anime gives her dark blonde hair. In Season Five, it appears to be back to the light blonde.
    • Some manga illustrations show Ukraine with a darker, more yellowy blonde hair color while the anime gives her platinum blond. Season Five of the anime later changed it to the manga's colors.
    • Poland has light blond hair in the manga, but got the saturated yellow of a lot of European nations in the first four seasons of the anime. The Beautiful World gave him the light blond again.

  • All Love Is Unrequited:
  • Animal Motifs:
    • Dogs for Lithuania, it looks like, to the point that he is shown with dog ears in the Little Bit Beastly side-story strips in Hetalia Hetaween 2013. He's sweet, caring and eager to please, but is often pushed around. He had a dog companion as a child. He's lanky, and his front locks can resemble a dog's floppy ears. He also used to be very powerful, and the nation is heavily associated with wolves in its myths - he's a demoted wolf. And though it might be a coincidence, "Toris" is supposedly a very common name for dogs in Lithuania.
    • Complementing how Lithuania is dog-like, Poland is of course, cat-like. He's bossy, demanding, does what he wants and doesn't take much authority, while also being quite shy and very clingy. He's been drawn with cat ears and a Playful Cat Smile a handful of times (though pretty much everybody has). His Nagoya accent is frequently mistaken for talking like a cat (due to the much use of 'nya', a cat onomatopeia). The nail in the coffin is that 'Feliks' also sounds like 'Feline'.
    • Following popular stereotypes, Russia resembles a bear (the country's national animal). He is very big, cute, and cuddly with very dangerous strength and temper. To top it off, he has bear ears in Hetaween 2010 and The Character Shop event among others.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: A good rule of thumb here. Even for little Latvia.
  • Big, Screwed-Up Family: Up to providing a general Dysfunction Junction.
  • Brother–Sister Incest:
    • Belarus adores her older brother Russia and wants to marry him, much to Russia's horror.
    • It's implied in Ukraine and Belarus' song that Ukraine has feelings for Russia too, even though Belarus is far more upfront about it. However, her introduction in the manga showed that while she still has affection for him, she clearly does not want to be in a union with Russia again. On the relationship chart, her feelings towards Russia were "I want to leave right away!" and Russia wondering why she "hates" him (in contrast with Belarus's "let's marry!")
  • Call to Agriculture: Poland and Lithuania, quite literally, during the "What Happened After Tannenburg" strip.
  • The Chew Toy:
    • Ukraine and the Baltic States — Latvia and Lithuania in particular.
    • Truth in Television applies for this one, particularly if you toss Poland into the mix as these countries have been the traditional Chew Toy of Europe and have been frequently invaded and conquered. Most of these countries have spent more time under the foot of the more powerful countries for the last millennium.
    • Word of God says he purposely averted this with Poland, because while Poland has the image of the poor country stuck between Germany and Russia, it kept on rising back, like a phoenix.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander:
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady:
    • Poland, eventually lampshaded by Prussia. The meta reason for this is that Poland was originally planned to be a woman while Hungary was going to be a crossdressing man.
    • Lithuania, not as much as Poland, but his long-ish hair, big rounded eyes and slender figure can put some off, and his docile personality doesn't help. On the character identification chart, he's put in the "not sure" section.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change:
  • Flower Motifs:
    • Russia is sometimes seen with sunflowers. In one strip, Russia tells Lithuania that he dreams of "living in a warm place surrounded by sunflowers". They put the "dere" in Yandere for him.
    • Latvia attacks Sealand with a Lily of the Valley at one point (which is, interestingly, Finland's national flower), the first hint of his Yandere or Cute and Psycho potential. note 
    • Rye fields. Just... dear God, the rye fields.
  • Foil: Lithuania and Poland. Lithuania is depressive, cautious, has a protective nature and a realistic outlook, while Poland is self-centered, eccentric, forceful and carefree.
  • Hair-Contrast Duo: Poland and Lithuania. A bit of a subversion in that Lithuania is usually the sweeter of the two, but he fits the "darker personality" just fine by depressing himself constantly.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Poland and Lithuania. As to whether or not it crosses the line to Ho Yay (they were once married) is up to you.
  • Intentional Engrish for Funny: The Baltics and Poland tend to speak like this in the dub. For example:
    Lithuania: (on the phone with Poland) Do not try to distracting me!
  • Light Feminine and Dark Feminine: Ukraine and Belarus respectively. Although it's hinted that Ukraine might be able to do both...
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: Zig-zagged with Ukraine and Poland which also inverts Pink Girl, Blue Boy. Ukraine has Boyish Short Hair and utilitarian fashion sense with a maternal personality, while Poland is a flamboyant Wholesome Cross Dresser who has a strong will & ego.
  • Nightmare Fetishist:
  • Odd Friendship / Opposites Attract: Poland is cheerful and hyper but also selfish and bratty, Lithuania is gentle and kind but also constantly stressed. At some point they even were in an alliance, which is pretty much assumed to them having been married. (To be fair, the alliance itself did start with the marriage of their bosses, Duke Jagiello of Lithuania and Queen Jadwiga of Poland)
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: Sort of inverted with Russia and his sisters. Ukraine is recognized for her blue overalls, Belarus is recognized for her indigo/blue dress, and Russia is recognized for his scary purple aura, pink flowery aura, and (sometimes) pink scarf. And then Poland is associated with pink too...
  • Prone to Tears:
    • Latvia is almost always on the verge of tears.
    • Ukraine, too, since her aforementioned economy-related woes and failure to get more friends outside the Baltic and Soviet circles often leave the poor girl quite... distressed. And tearful.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Poland is the Red to Lithuania's Blue.
  • Satellite Character: Eventually subverted with Ukraine and Belarus. Ukraine is the most socially intelligent of her siblings, and is shown interacting with the other female characters and the other Eastern European countries without a mention of her family in the events. Belarus gets a ton of insight on her character beyond her Big Brother Attraction in SeaLat Desktop mascots, and the events. Where they play this straight, however, is in their audio CD, where they are little more than Russia's incestuous fangirls.
  • Shrinking Violet:
    • Latvia to the extreme. When Russia wonders why Latvia's always twitching when he's around, he grabs Latvia and demands he stop. Latvia does... but goes into a coma and almost dies. Cut to Estonia's horrified screams.
    • Poland is a variation. He seems to be outgoing and cheery when around people he's close to, but when confronted with someone he doesn't know, he sometimes backs off and clings to or hides behind the nearest person.
  • Stepford Smiler:
    • Lithuania is the most cheerful of the Baltics. Relatively. He often responds to torment by laughing and trying so hard to keep on smiling...
    • Poland keeps a brave face even when he's feeling anxious and shy: He did so during his first meeting with Lithuania, and also in the Hetaween 2013 event, when Latvia describes him as crying, but claiming he was having fun anyway.
  • Tareme Eyes:
    • Ukraine has huge ones, fitting for a warm mother figure.
    • Lithuania, too: His puppyish eyes show just how much of a Nice Guy he is, unlike Poland.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Ukraine and Belarus are an unusual example. Appearance-wise, Ukraine is the tomboy and Belarus the girly girl, but with their personalities, the roles are reversed with Ukraine being a sweet, gentle Shrinking Violet and Belarus being an angry-looking Yandere.
  • Tsurime Eyes:
    • Latvia is often drawn with these despite being practically the epitome of a moe boy. Perhaps it's for his occasional extreme bluntness and hints of Cute and Psycho.
    • Poland too, much unlike Lithuania. Poland has the same eye shape as Switzerland.
    • Belarus, contrasting with her older siblings' tareme.
  • Two Girls to a Team: Ukraine and Belarus are this to the Eastern European group.

  • The Alcoholic: According to some notes and the desktop mascots. Despite being too young to drink in human age.
  • And Call Him "George": Russia's fondness of crushing head pats, and his idea of "playing" with Latvia involves stretching him bodily.
  • Big Brother Mentor: Subverted in that Latvia tries to act as one toward Sealand, only to break out in tears when thinking about his own history. Sealand ends up having to comfort him.
  • Bookworm: He loves reading poetry and romance novels.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: He acts as something of a grounding influence to Sealand.
  • Crossdressing Voices: In the CD dramas, he's the only Baltic voiced by a female: Rie Kugimiya. It also applies in the English dub where he's voiced by a girl named Ryan Reynolds. (no, not that one). However, in the Japanese anime, he's voiced by Kazutada "Kokoro" Tanaka (Poland).
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: As spacey and shy as he is, he's also said to be a "hidden genius" who "accomplishes things that seem impossible." He did manage to build an entire railroad at Russia's behest with no previous experience doing so...
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His fragile nature is said to be the result of him experiencing many unfortunate events in life at a young age.
  • Early Installment Character-Design Difference: He was originally drawn as only slightly shorter than Lithuania and Estonia; later on, he became much smaller than them, and one of the smallest characters in the series.
  • Fee Fi Faux Pas: He probably should stop saying whatever is on his mind, at least in front of Russia. Depending on the situation it can also be Innocently Insensitive.
  • Giving Up the Ghost: When Russia grabs Latvia and tells him to stop shaking, it scares Latvia so much that his soul flies out of his body.
  • Nervous Wreck: The funny thing is that he actually works better under pressure.
  • Never Gets Drunk: He claims that he can drink up to 40 cups of alcohol with no problems.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Possibly; his volume 4 profile says that he's "hidden his true strength and ability to handle things easily."
  • Right in Front of Me: Quoting his profile: "Often lets wrong things slip out in front of Russia and has to face the consequences."
  • The Slacker: Doesn't work hard unless he's ordered (and threatened), as Estonia observes.
  • The Smart Guy: Has surprisingly in-depth knowledge about other nations. He's also said to be good at chess.
  • Tears of Fear: When Russia comes around.
  • Tiny Schoolboy: Although one episode implies that his small size is the result of Russia's pats on the head slowly crushing his spine.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Subverted when Latvia seems to have this realization after he completes the railroad:
    Latvia: [completes the railroad] Whoa, it worked?! [trembling in excitement] A-Amazing...! To think that I made it by imitation and succeeded in one shot! All these talents and powers have always been hidden inside me! [calms down immediately] Not a chance, right? I'm really no good, getting that puffed up over this.

  • Apologises a Lot: In Hetalia Bloodbath 2010, to the point of not even listening to what Poland was trying to tell him through the phone.
  • Big Brother Instinct: From his Volume 5 profile: "He likes to look after others, he's like a big brother figure!"
  • Brainy Brunet: One of the very few dark-haired Northern European countries (and the only one a consistent brunet - Hungary, Netherlands and Belgium have been depicted as blonds in some art, while Lithuania never has) and often noted to be intelligent, especially next to Dumb Blond Poland. Russia even says "you look smart" to Lithuania before dragging him away after the partitions of Poland.
  • Characterization Marches On: Who was the first person to use the word "fantabulous" in a sentence? Not Poland. Lithuania.
  • Clark Kent Outfit: He's actually quite muscular.
  • The Comically Serious: This busybody is even more serious than Germany...making his antics with Poland all the more hilarious.
  • Cowardly Lion: According to one strip.
    Finland: He's usually so kind, but in battle his aura and face change.
  • Diving Save: In the Battle of Tannenburg, Lithuania saves Poland just as Prussia is about to bring a sword down on his head, as well as having a knife against Prussia's throat. Poland lampshades the trope when he remarks on how Lithuania was "totally late".
  • Dogged Nice Guy: To Belarus, even when she hates him and makes it very clear.
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: Used to have one as a kid, and the puppy barked and whimpered at the sight of... Russia. Who apparently wasn't crazy back then.
  • French Maid Outfit: Russia forces him into one.
  • Friend to All Living Things: In the outsourcing strips he is shown befriending the Whale and Tony, the alien.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: He has several on his back, which are hinted but not stated outright to be due to Russia's abuse. Poland discovers them in the bath.
  • Horrible Judge of Character:
    • Initially, at least, Lithuania and Poland's friendship comes off as extremely one-sided, and though Lithuania is frequently exasperated by Poland's antics, he still works hard to stay with and protect him. After all, the alternative is Russia. It was later subverted however, as following the "Liet's Scars" strip, the original "Meeting of the World" strip (in which Poland confronts the much feared Russia in Lithuania's defense), and later character profiles, their friendship became much less one-sided than in the earlier strips. Poland's character has changed over the years, and he is much less selfish in the newer strips. One strip has a dream sequence in which a younger Lithuania tells Poland that he hates him for being so selfish. Poland's response? "I, like, totally don't care what [Lithuania] thinks of me. Even if you, like, hate me, it totally doesn't change that I like you." Then he says that he'll try to be less selfish.
    • When on a date, he seems to remain completely oblivious to Belarus's antics.
  • Hot-Blooded Sideburns: He actually has a fluffy pair of earlocks, but the rest of his hair being as long sort of mitigates it, and he averts it by being a mellow Nice Guy anyway. However, he was once quite the badass empire with Poland, and when he finally loses his patience he can get very frustrated, to near Ax-Crazy levels sometimes.
  • In-Series Nickname: Poland calls Lithuania "Liet"; it comes from Lietuvos, the endonym for Lithuania. The Right Stuff translation of Vol. 3 has Poland call him "Lithy" instead.
  • Love Martyr: Lithuania's one-sided crush on Belarus certainly comes off as this trope. He constantly overlooks her violent tendencies... hell, he doesn't even notice her breaking all of his fingers. Even when Poland pointed it out, he just assumes that his fingers can bend that way while Belarus breaks his remaining non-fractured fingers.
  • Nice Guy: One of his earliest bios even says, "a really really really good person."
  • No Sense of Humor: "More serious than Germany and worse at understanding jokes!"
  • Not So Above It All: Sure, most of the time Lithuania is portrayed as a genuine Nice Guy amongst the insanity of Russia and Poland, but he does occasionally express frustration, particularly with Poland. For example, telling Prussia that he hates him and giving him the advice of "Russia loves people who laugh and cry easily" is certainly not nice. Said scene also implies that yes, Russia's occupation pushed him to his limits.
  • Only Sane Man: He almost stands equally with Estonia in terms of being relatively reasonable and not nuts... almost. But then you put him in front of Belarus...
  • Sitcom Archnemesis: Toward Prussia, as it seems; he says outright that he doesn't like Prussia, and we see him giving Prussia a Death Glare. It's said to be the result of him being bullied by Prussia (or, rather, the Teutonic Knights) in his pagan days.
  • Spell My Name With An S: So is it Laurinaitis, Lolinaitis, Rolinatis, or what? Also, Toris? Taurys? Tauras? It could also be Tolys, a shortening of some Lithuanian names that are extremely uncommon (except in dogs).
  • The Straight Man: Plays this to Poland's strange antics.
  • The Strategist: His ability at making strategies is said to be extraordinary, and there's his tricking the Teutonic Knights and winning the Battle of Tannenburg to prove it.
  • With Friends Like These...: Occasionally views Poland this way.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: He never seems to get what he wants. Because of Russia, Poland and Lithuania are split apart. For a while, Lithuania works for America and much prefers that life, but the Great Depression hits and he has to go back to working for Russia. When he finally gets a date with his crush Belarus, she breaks his fingers.
