    As a whole

  • Animal Motifs: Fans have likened some of the Southeast Asian countries to cats for different reasons.
    • The Philippines is the only nation among the group to have a legit cat smile.
    • Indonesia's usage of the "nya" suffix in his language makes him sound like he's meowing.
    • Singapore tends to hiss and bare his fangs at people who upset him. His mascot is also a mythic variation of a savage feline.
    • Malaysia's design is partially inspired by tigers, contrasting him with Singapore's merlion.
  • Big, Screwed-Up Family: While not as bad as their East Asian counterparts, conflict does exist between some of the ASEAN members, particularly Singapore and Malaysia.
  • Comic Trio: Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines count as this whenever they hang out together.
  • Mukokuseki: Somewhat averted in that all of the Southeast Asian nations are appropriately tanned, though they do have atypical eye and sometimes hair colors.
  • Supreme Chef: Singapore and Thailand are noted to be very good cooks.
    • Fans love to portray Indonesia and Malaysia as competing chefs due to their similar cuisines.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: All of them adore sweets, though Indonesia's love for them is on a whole different level.

    Socialist Republic of Vietnam

Cộng hòa Xã hội chủ nghĩa Việt Nam 🇻🇳
"A photo with me...? I'm not photogenic, and it's embarrassing."

  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: One manga illustration makes her look very pretty and a little aloof when in her áo dài. When in the presence of her Southeast Asian colleagues, she's also far more bewildered and exasperated by their antics.
  • Asian and Nerdy: A gamer, indeed. She was showed playing Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception in a sketch on Himaruya's blog.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Based on her true history, we know that many powerful forces such as America, China, France, Mongolia Empire, etc. have learnt their lesson. Seems to live up to this during the Hetalia Bloodbath 2011 where she takes charge of the girls' meeting.
  • Brainy Brunette:
She's been using her natural creative skillfulness in building new things.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: She may have been hinted to be this during the Halloween Event where she shows up dressed as Vietnamese robot Topio. And wins.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Considering Vietnamese history, this is quite justified:
She has a rough background, so despite her cute face, this girl is pretty darn tough!
  • Can't Hold Her Liquor: Is said to be dangerous when drunk.
  • Flower Motifs: Fanon loves to draw her with lotuses, which do show up in some of the illustrations she's in from time to time, or a ribbon in the fifth volume.
  • I'm Not Pretty: According to herself. Taiwan disagrees.
    Taiwan: It's okay, Vietnam's a cutie!
  • Improbable Weapon User: Vietnam often be shown carry a rice paddle while wearing her Ao dai. In one sketch on Himaruya's blog, she is also shown with her rice paddle in a military uniform.
  • Lady of War: A popular depiction of Vietnam by fandom that seems to be confirmed by the author recently.
  • Meido: Jossed. She was featured dressed as one in a very old sketch on Himaruya's blog (which many people mistook as a design for a Philippines), and it was not revealed that that was her until years later. However, that design seems to have been completely thrown out. Played straight again, however, as one of her Halloween outfits in a 2014 sketch.
  • Not So Stoic: Blushes intensely when checking on some photos in the manga. She's also more expressive during the ASEAN meetings, ranging from exclaiming that there were drawbacks to making meetings less formal to being flustered when the Philippines casually tells her that she was the last to arrive for the meeting.
  • Only Sane Woman: During the casual ASEAN meeting, she's the one to point out the drawbacks of making meetings more laidback. Considering what Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia are, it's safe to say that she's the most reasonable out of the ASEAN group.
  • Plucky Girl: According to her profile.
A very headstrong woman in an áo dài! There are many strong women in her history!
  • Proper Lady: As her profile in Volume 6.
A very proper young lady wearing an ao dai. The country is full of strong women!
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Vietnam's the mature, calming Blue to Taiwan's cheerful, energetic Red.
  • Sexy Santa Dress: A Christmas sketch by Himaruya depicts her in a Santa dress with a short skirt that shows off her butt.
  • Shrinking Violet: "Humble and shy" according to her profile in Volume 5.
  • The Stoic: While not to Perpetual Frowner levels, she has to ask Thailand to teach her how to smile.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Has an aloof appearance and seems to be a generally quiet girl, but has also shown signs of shyness and Heroic Self-Deprecation. This peaks in Hetalia Hetaween 2013, since she's extremely flustered when she wears one of Taiwan's outfits and it turns out to be a bit too skimpy for her taste.

Republika ng Pilipinas 🇵🇭
Oh wait, wait. Before we start the meeting, can all of us get together for a picture?

  • The Alcoholic: Implied to be one after doing a selfie with bottles of beer right beside him.
  • Attention Whore: Loves being the center of attention just like America. As demonstrated in the Asean-centric chapters, he'll try to dominate or steer the conversation to what he likes to talk about, whether it is asking Italy about what his favorite food in his place is or butting into Indonesia and Malaysia's conversation to talk about his muscles.
  • Bishie Sparkle: Happens whenever he poses for a selfie.
  • Brutal Honesty: Tends to do this with a smile on his face. Examples include his accidental insult of Thailand by cheerfully mentioning his flaws and affectionately telling Malaysia he's annoying right to his face.
  • The Ditz: As the most energetic, cheerful, and impulsive member, there are times when the other ASEAN members have to rein him in, a trait reminiscent of America. One strip shows him either ignoring or not reading the atmosphere as a flustered Indonesia tries to stop him from riling Thailand.
Philippines: That's totally Thailand! The so called land of smiles is actually buff and is good at gambling and scary when angr-
    Thailand: Hmmm?
Indonesia: Philippines, that's enough! O-oh no...
  • Fun Personified: Acts as the mood maker of the ASEAN group, mirroring America's role in the G8 meeting.
  • The Gadfly: Not to the extent of Singapore, but in the strips he has appeared, he seems to enjoy riling Thailand and is the Wise Guy to Indonesia's Straight Man.
  • Head Pet: Always has his pet tarsier Pien-kun on his head or shoulder. Unlike tarsiers in real life, Pien-kun is a Civilized Animal that thrives on attention like his owner and does not mind loud noises or human contact.
  • Idiot Hair: Has a somewhat thin curl.
  • Keet: Comes across as both cheerful and frivolous during his first comic appearance. This contrasts him from the more laidback ASEAN members.
  • Muscle Angst: Humorously wants to gain muscles like America.
  • Playful Cat Smile: Likes to give a mischievous cat grin, even when caught off-guard.
  • Sailor Fuku: Wears one to symbolize his country's naval roots. However, even he finds it stuffy at times, preferring to wear more casual outfits instead.
  • Selfie Fiend: Tends to carry a selfie stick around. Also Truth in Television as the Philippines is known for being the selfie capital of the world.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: While unconfirmed as to what extent is his relationship with America, the Philippines does resemble him in terms of facial features, hairstyle, and even how they conduct themselves during meetings. Not to mention being both attention seekers.

    Republic of Indonesia

Republik Indonesia 🇮🇩
So I, um, have the privilege to, kinda like give an opening speech to wish for our... development aaaaand... growth...

  • Badass Biker: Fits well with his Cool Shades. He was the only member to arrive in the ASEAN meeting via motorcycle.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Is this towards the Philippines, who is basically Fun Personified and The Gadfly, and Malaysia, who is a Cloud Cuckoo Lander.
  • Hunk: Has a handsome face and well-built frame.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Despite his awkwardness and stoicism, Indonesia sincerely wants to bond with the other ASEAN members.
  • Informed Attribute: Indonesia is said to be very friendly according to his profile, though he comes across as more distant and cautious.
    • Not really just informed now as of Chapter 448 when Iceland came over, where he's shown to be quite friendly and welcoming if not a little awkward (though mainly due to Iceland's bluntness).
  • Situational Sociability: While more comfortable interacting with his fellow ASEAN colleagues, Indonesia turns awkward when making public speeches or talking to more esteemed countries like Italy.
  • Sweet Tooth: Is quite fond of sweets.
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky: The handsome but somewhat sardonic member of the ASEAN group.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: According to character notes, he is afraid of the dark as he thinks it may be haunted.

    Republic of Singapore

Republik Singapura 🇸🇬
Well, I gotta say. My body may be small but my tastes are the size of the world!

  • Aloof Younger Brother: Is this towards Malaysia, not wanting to put up with his antics.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Especially when Malaysia is concerned. During their first chapter together, Singapore sarcastically claims to be a different country upon being spoken to by him.
  • The Fashionista: Said to be fashionable, to the point he's involved in his country's business commercials as a model.
  • The Gadfly: Instantly lives up to the "Fine City" reputation by warning the other ASEAN members not to make a mess lest they'll be fined with a smug smile on his face. He then says that he's joking after the Philippines and Thailand respond with a Big "WHAT?!".
  • Jerkass to One: While normally a friendly country, he is particularly hostile towards Malaysia. Might have something to do with them sharing the water bill among other things.
  • Hidden Depths: Don't let Singapore's cute appearance fool you — he's mentally tough.
  • Meaningful Appearance: Has a streak of white hair on his bangs, referencing his flag's crescent moon design.
  • Neat Freak: Blithely warns the ASEAN members not to spill food on the ground or they'll be fined. According to his character description however, his own room is messy despite having a neat and fashionable appearance.
  • Nice Guy: A polite young man... until someone's at risk of getting fined.
  • Shorter Means Smarter: Despite his smaller stature, Singapore is on par with other first world countries when it comes to wealth and higher standards of living.
  • Stepford Smiler: As a country that relies on tourism to prosper, he's turned smiling into an art form. It's only towards Malaysia that he drops all pretenses and gives him a clench-teethed frown every time they see each other.
  • Supreme Chef: Singapore's debut has him provide some of his finest regional dishes for the ASEAN luncheon.
  • Technicolor Eyes: He has violet eyes. This is speculated to be a reference to his national flower, the Vanda Miss Joaquim (Hybrid Orchid).
  • Tsundere: At least that's what Malaysia thinks he is, since Singapore smiles at everyone except him.

    Malaysia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/malaysia1_crop.jpg
Malaysia 🇲🇾
Thanks for waiting, you guys! The Malaysia you all know and love has shown up late!

  • Animal Motifs: Malaysia's hairstyle is partially inspired by his national animal, the Malayan tiger.
  • Annoying Older Sibling: Eagerly wants Singapore to acknowledge him as his big brother despite the latter's refusal.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Has the thickest eyebrows among the ASEAN members courtesy of him being a former colony of England.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: Even more carefree than Thailand, to the point where the guy has Skewed Priorities.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Comes to the conclusion that Singapore is Tsundere for him after realizing that the latter has only shown his tourist smile to everyone other than him.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Sports these when he gets upset.
  • The Ditz: One-ups the Philippines in this department. This is more prominent when they and Indonesia are together as Malaysia can be more dense when it comes to social cues.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: When he invited Iceland over, he gave bull dick soup to him. When Indonesia chastises him for this, Malaysia replies, "Why not? It's so plump and tasty!"
  • Friendly Address Privileges: Wants Singapore to call him brother in any language, but gets bluntly rejected.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: Has a really bad case of this as he obsessively wants everyone to love him, even personally asking the other ASEAN countries what they think of him.
  • Nice Guy: He's quite the amiable character, though his attempts at bonding rub Singapore the wrong way. His niceness is best shown when he personally invites Iceland to visit and tries to make him feel at home to downplay the Culture Clash.
  • Prone to Tears: Malaysia is easily hurt at the thought that Singapore does not reciprocate his affections for him.
  • Skewed Priorities: Went to play with sea cucumbers instead of attending a meeting. By the time he arrives at the cafe for the meeting, it's long over.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Zig-zagged by Malaysia who curiously asks the ASEAN members how strong their affections are for him despite confidently professing that they all love him.
  • Somebody Doesn't Love Malaysia: Takes issue with being disliked by others, especially if it's coming from someone like Singapore.
