Once a southern radio host and serial killer, Alastor is an enigmatic, infamously powerful Overlord known as the "Radio Demon" among other demons. He takes an interest in Charlie after seeing her on the news and offers to help her with her hotel, not because he believes in the cause, but because of the entertainment value he sees in the patrons' repeated failure. He serves as the hotel's main facility manager, benefactor, as well as an occasional protector whenever any threats come about.

    A-D
  • Abnormal Limb Rotation Range: While Niffty is darting about the hotel, Alastor watches her and turns his head almost completely backwards.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: After Sir Pentious is outed as The Mole for the Vees, the others only begrudgingly forgive him at Charlie's request. Alastor on the other hand is gleeful, and wastes little time taunting Vox for unwittingly handing him a new client.
  • Affably Evil: In contrast to other demons, Alastor comes off like a polite and friendly guy, with a penchant for dumb jokes. But most of Hell's inhabitants are rightly terrified of the Radio Demon, and want as little to do with him as possible. Indeed, as friendly as he is, he clarifies very quickly that he just wants to support the hotel to see demons despair when they fail to be redeemed. He slips into Faux Affably Evil at times, mostly when he's trying to be scary, but his politeness is genuine most of the time. The comic "A Day in the After Life" really emphasizes this, featuring an entire day of Alastor going calmly about his business as the denizens of Hell flee out of his way, being faultlessly polite to everyone he meets, and then eating a butcher who attempted to assault a customer in his meat shop.
  • Agent Peacock: He has a certain level of campiness to his character and to quote Angel Dust “looks like a strawberry pimp”, but Alastor is also one of the most powerful and dangerous sinner-demons Hell has ever seen.
  • Almighty Janitor: Downplayed, but noticeable on a certain level. His hotel position is "Facilities Manager", despite being the second-most powerful resident of the hotel next to Charlie, who isn't willing to throw her weight around like Alastor. Furthermore, he seems to command more respect and fear in Hell than she does despite being lower in the hierarches than she isnote , and it appears he has better resources to get the Hotel running. And though the gap in power between him is natural-born demons is still large, it's not as large as it is for other Sinners, as he somehow has more power than the vast majority of the latter group.
  • Always Someone Better:
    • He’s this to Vox. Despite his massive media conglomerate, Vox completely lacks Alastor’s charisma, stage presence, brutality, and wit. Additionally, since his 7 year absence, he’s become MUCH more powerful than when he first fought Vox, and even then he almost beat him.
    • Lucifer is this to Alastor, being able to counter everything the latter throws at him, as well as succeeding in beating Adam where Alastor couldn't.
    • He also learns this the hard way in his battle against Adam (who isn't a good or strategic fighter) where he almost loses his life because of the vast power imbalance.
  • Ambiguously Human: Although Alastor is a sinner and therefore formerly human, many of Hell’s residents remain unsure of his origins due to the fact that he’s accomplished things that shouldn’t be possible for a non-Hellborn. When Vaggie tries to film him on camera, he just shows up as a staticky mess, most likely on purpose. The fact that he's made a deal with someone with enough power and influence to make him panic might have something to do with that.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It’s revealed that he was missing for seven years, but it’s still a mystery as to why he disappeared, where he went, and what he was doing. When questioned about it, his answers are always vague and dismissive.
  • Animalistic Abomination: He's a deer demon. Specifically, an elk, if the sound he makes when Sir Pentious rips his coat is anything to go by. The antlers that sprout from his head grow significantly larger when he takes his more demonic form, and could also be viewed as radio antennas.
  • Animal Motifs: Deer—he has small antlers, deer ears, and deer track patterns on the soles of his shoes. His cause of death was being shot by a hunter after being mistaken for a deer, and he lets out an elk bugle before attacking Sir Pentious. While this may seem odd for a serial killer and powerful Overlord, given that the deer is a prey animal, it may have other meanings.
    • Deer are frequently thought of as harmless and peaceful thanks to works like Bambi, but red deer are very ornery and will eat meat. Alastor's politeness and penchant for being Affably Evil is almost enough to make one forget that he is a serial killer who broadcasted the screams of his victims on the radio for all of Hell to hear.
    • Stags are viewed as "kings of the forest" due to their regal, crown-like horns, but they can be brought down by predators like wolves, bears, and human hunters. Alastor may be a terrifying Overlord but he is outmatched in terms of power by the Ars Goetia, the Seven Deadly Sins, the royal family, and angels of Heaven. And he's desperate to get out of the deal he made with the mysterious, unknown person who currently owns his soul and has him on a leash.
  • Appropriated Appellation: He outright tells Vaggie that his face was "meant for Radio", when "A face for radio" is typically meant to be a Stealth Insult that someone is ugly, the joke being that you can't see someone's face on a radio broadcast. In Alastor's case, he appears to take it very literally, to the point where his mere presence causes interference on camera footage.
  • Attention Whore: Something that makes him ironically very similar to Vox, though Alastor displays his desire for notoriety in a more subdued way. Alastor's calm and confident composure takes a noticeable crack whenever someone ignores him or doesn't think he's as important as he does, as seen when Carmilla notes that she doesn't really care where he's been after his absence during the last seven years, and when Lucifer straight-up doesn't know who he is and calls him a "has-been" to his face. Makes sense, as many a Serial Killer have been known to thoroughly enjoy the attention their infamy attracts.
  • Ax-Crazy: Though he hides it well underneath his Southern Gentleman demeanor, Alastor is still a sadistic killer who often broadcasts his kills on the radio. This is perhaps best demonstrated when his shadow tentacles obliterate Pentious' blimp, all while Alastor watches the whole thing unfold with an absolutely unhinged expression.
  • Badass Boast:
    • Less than a minute after him being at the Happy Hotel, Vaggie puts a spear to his throat and says she won't let him hurt anyone. His response? "Dear, if I wanted to hurt anyone here... I would have done so already." It's driven home by the fact that he seems genuinely amused by her threat like it's a joke.
    • During his Quarreling Song against Vox, he riles up Vox bad enough that he bluescreened and caused a blackout. But that's still not enough, as the final lyrics of the song is an explicit warning for Vox and his cronies that their days are numbered.
      Let's begin
I'm gonna make you wish that I'd stayed gone
      Tune on in
When I'm done, your status quo will know its race is run
      Oh, this will be fun.
    • During the battle to save the hotel from the angels in "The Show Must Go On", he greets Adam in his typically Affably Evil manner, then declares that "I'm about to end your fucking life".
  • Badass Fingersnap: Does this to summon his Combat Tentacles at the beginning of his 'fight' with Sir Pentious' blimp.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: He's a sharp dresser as well as a terrifying demon lord. In life, he was a simple serial murderer, in Hell, he's implied to be something much worse.
  • Bad Boss: Zigzagged. While he's shown to be fairly pleasant towards Niffty, the same can very much not be said about Husk, who he greatly enjoys pushing around and treating like a menial servant, and isn't above threatening torture and murder on Husk if he presses his Berserk Button too much.
  • Bait the Dog: His offer to help Charlie with her hotel might make it seem like he's not such a bad guy at first... but then he reveals that he thinks redemption is impossible for demons, and he just wants to amuse himself watching damned souls try and fail to get a ticket to Heaven. Downplayed, however, in that despite his... less than sincere motivations for helping out, Alastor is true to his word, and his contributions are legitimate help the Hotel desperately needs. He gets the place cleaned and repaired, brings in extra staff, and basically provides the backing the place is going to need to have any chance of working — with no Literal Genie traps, and without having trapped anybody into a deal (although the latter's more to do with Charlie being smart enough not to make any deals with him).
  • Barrier Warrior: When Adam and the Exorcists arrive and begin their assault on the hotel, Alastor uses his magic to surround the hotel in a barrier of dark energy. It doesn't last long, however.
  • Battle Aura: When forced to use his full power, Alastor is surrounded by an aura of black and green dark energy.
  • Being Evil Sucks: A minor variation compared to most. The prequel comic starring him shows that while he does like to be feared, his reputation when he's angry or aiming to prove a point has severely limited the social interactions anyone is willing to have with him.
  • Beneath the Mask: The radio static in his voice disappears whenever Alastor is being sincere. For example, when he says "Quite a pleasure!" about meeting Charlie face-to-face, "I've lacked inspiration for decades..." about how incredibly dull and boring things have been, or "...only to repeatedly trip and tumble down into the fiery pit of failure." about finding joy in the suffering of others. This happens again in "The Show Must Go On", when genuinely startled by Adam's attack he says "What just happened? ...Fuck." without his radio static filter.
  • Berserk Button: While it's incredibly difficult to get under Alastor's skin, there are a few guaranteed ways to do so.
    • Vox seems to be his — An encounter with him leaves Alastor angry enough that he unleashes a slew of curse words and insults, something very uncharacteristic of him. As a result, Alastor absolutely despises being on video and anything related to that medium. Vaggie merely pointing a camera in his direction while making a commercial either enrages him into flashing his true form at her as a warning or reveals that his demonic form simply does not play nice with video by nature.
    • He also seems to have an extreme dislike of people who prey on weaker victims — in a prequel comic, when he sees a boar demon butcher accosting a small sheep demon, either to add her to the menu or rape her, he intervenes and eats the butcher instead.
    • Damaging his clothing is enough to make him remember you and turn into his full demon form]], as Sir Pentious finds out the painful way
Alastor: Ah, yes! You're the one who ruined my coat! (Narrows his eyes)    I definitely remember you now.
    • He also hates to be ignored or treated as irrelevant, noticeably flinching and glaring at Carmilla when she expresses disinterest about where he has been the past seven years. Later, he suddenly becomes uncharacteristically invested in the Hotel, when he'd previously claimed it was just an amusing distraction to him, and willing to risk needling Lucifer himself when the latter (driven by his own desire to please his estranged daughter) snubs the work Alastor has put into the Hotel as second rate compared to what the King of Hell could offer.
    • His biggest one is reminding him that he is bound to someone else. When Husk casually whispers that he knows Alastor's own soul belongs to another, Alastor can barely restrain himself from butchering Husk and starkly warns Husk to never bring it up ever again.
Alastor: If you ever say that again, I will tear your soul apart, and broadcast your screams for every other disrespectful WRETCH who dares to question me!
      Husk: (whimpers) Understood.
Alastor:    Lovely.    (laughs jovially) Good talk, my good man! Always nice to catch up!
  • Beware the Nice Ones: For an Overlord of Hell, Alastor is a pretty affable guy and it's nigh impossible to make him legitimately angry. But Alastor is still a ruthless, sadistic murderer, and as one hapless butcher learned the hard way, getting on the Radio Demon's bad side is the last thing you do.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Alastor has the look, voice, and personality of an over-the-top 1930s radio host, with Angel Dust referring to him as a "strawberry pimp", but there are very few people in Hell (sinners or otherwise) that can match or exceed him in power, and he has no problem demonstrating his might to anyone who dares challenge him.
  • Beyond Redemption:
    • Believes this about demons as a whole. Alastor doesn't think Charlie's idea is going to work, saying that a person's chance to be good was the life they lived before, and that demons are stuck in Hell as punishment. The only reason Alastor wants to help run the hotel anyway is because he thinks the demons who try will all fail, and that it will be fun to watch. This is also Vaggie's opinion of him specifically, stated against Charlie's belief that everybody deserves a second chance.
    • He definitely thinks this of his closest friend Mimzy. After she brings Loan Sharks to the hotel and endangers the main cast, Alastor drops the sadistic and generally jokey attitude and tells Mimzy to leave immediately. He tells her that she can only stay if she genuinely wants to try redemption, before settling on the opinion that he knows she isn't interested in that. Alastor is proven right when Mimzy huffs and proceeds to leave while insulting the idea of becoming a better person.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Has a moment when he saves a sheep demon from being assaulted by a butcher. Though he does it in a less than heroic fashion, by killing and eating the butcher demon.
  • Big Eater: Those big teeth of his aren't just for show. His idea of a normal breakfast is a whole entire deer, which becomes more fittingly disturbing when you realize that he himself is technically a deer-like demon.
  • Big Red Devil: While he's a deer rather than the usual goat motifs that are associated with the classic Satan, he's definitely quite tall, horned, wears red, and is incredibly dangerous.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: When he transforms into his full demon form in the series, or wants to appear particularly menacing, his sclerae turn black to go along with his red irises and unhinged fanged smile.
  • Black Eyes of Evil: When he transforms into his demon form in the comics, his eyes transform into coal-black pits.
  • Blood Knight: Downplayed but present. Having been a Serial Killer in life, Alastor relishes the chance to indulge in bloodshed and carnage. When a group of loan sharks chasing Mimzy attack the hotel, Alastor brutally kills them all, glad to have the chance to "blow off some steam". Likewise, when the Exorcists attack the hotel in the finale, Alastor greets the challenge with a smile, even facing off against Adam himself despite the latter being far stronger than he is.
    Alastor: Let the slaughter begin!
  • Blood Magic: Clenches his fist so hard that it draws blood, as he delivers the finishing blow against Sir Pentious, a common ritual to invoke this kind of magic.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Was confirmed early to have a "not normal" moral compass by Viv. Later demonstrated in ‘A Day in the Afterlife’. Alastor casually causes trouble where ever he goes for his own amusement, and he has no issue killing and eating his fellow demons. While he kills a butcher demon because he assaults a weak victim, it's because he finds it distasteful rather than morally reprehensible. All in all, he seems to enjoy demons suffering because of their own sinful natures and generally butting heads with each other (thus he sows squabbling and envies where he can) but the helpless being harmed through no fault of their own is something to violently object to.
  • Break the Haughty: After spending Season 1 acting as this untouchable enigma, his defeat at Adam's hand in the finale serves as a brutal reality check for him that while he is powerful, he is far from invincible. And the lyrics, the manic look in his eyes, and the increasing panic in his voice as he sings his part of the song make it clear that nearly getting killed by the Exorcist has left him rattled to the core and he's more determined than ever to find a way to free himself from whatever contract is binding his soul.
  • Broken Ace: Alastor is one of the most powerful and feared Overlords in all of Hell. And he has the extreme amount of power to back up that claim. Even so, the series hints at a number of flaws he has - Insecurity, need for attention, and psychotic nature. There's also the fact that his soul is bound by someone else and he is desperate to find a loophole out of it.
  • Brutal Honesty: Assuming that his helping the hotel isn't just for some secret plan that we can only guess at, he's very upfront about how he thinks that redemption is impossible for demons, who wasted their one chance at earning it on Earth, and that he's only helping because he thinks that it'll be entertaining to see the hotel guests try and fail to achieve it.
  • Bully Hunter: The "A Day in the After Life" prequel comic ends with him murdering and eating a butcher who attacked the client who entered after him (with the implication that the butcher was about to kill or sexually assault her). He seems to dislike anyone who would take advantage and abuse people weaker than themselves which would include rapists or murderers who kill for no reason at all like the butcher.
  • Bullying a Dragon:
    • In the pilot episode, he outright dismisses the idea that sinners can be redeemed from the Princess of Hell, who while pacifistic, is still incredibly powerful in Hell's hierarchy and is quite capable of battling those who actually get on her nerves if pushed far enough (note: Valentino).
    • While Alastor is very much a powerful demon overlord in his own right, he is still leagues away from Lucifer whom he still shows willingness to anger by claiming himself to be more of a father to Charlie than Lucifer.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Implied when Sir Pentious says "We meet again" to him, but whether this is genuine, or an insult is debatable. When Sir Pentious attacks again a week later and Alastor still claims not to recall him, it becomes clear Alastor is doing it on purpose to show how little he thinks of the would-be villain. He does take offense in his coat getting damaged, enough to remind about it next time they meet.
Alastor: Thanks for another forgettable experience.
  • Camera Shy: Alastor hates being photographed with cameras or any kind of recording device. When Vaggie tries to record him for a commercial, the camera fizzles out and starts sparking.
  • Camp Straight: Zig-zagged. Alastor is an outwardly flamboyant man whose voice frequently cracks when he's excited and who adopts many a flourish or pose that are often described by viewers as "fruity" or "zesty", but he considers himself to be this. What complicates matters is that he's actually a closeted Aromantic Asexual.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Not only he is one, and takes pride in it, but he expects every other demon in Hell to be irredeemable and accepting this as their true personality. He takes interest in Charlie and her hotel partially because it is amusing and entertaining to see someone thinking otherwise; after all, she's probably the first person he met with this mindset in decades.
  • Casting a Shadow: Alastor's magic primarily revolves around manipulating shadows. His own shadow is seemingly alive and can move on its own accord, he is able to teleport by turning himself into a shadow, and he is capable of creating constructs and living beings out of shadow such as shadowy tentacles to attack Sir Pentious' blimp or shadow creatures to act as backup singers for his song or a crew for the hotel's commercial.
  • Casting Gag: Amir Talai previously played a 1920's radio host, Bert Healey, in the Hollywood Bowl production of Annie. In an amusing coincidence, Alastor references Bert Healey's song in the pilot, as it's apparently his favorite tune.
  • Chaos Is Evil: Vaggie describes him as "a violent monster of chaos".
  • Character Catchphrase: Alastor used the same line when he first introduced himself to Charlie, Lucifer, and Adam.
Alastor: Alastor. Pleasure to be meeting you. Quite a pleasure.
  • Character Tics:
    • Tilting his head and narrowing one of his eyes when something catches his attention or when assessing something. And, when genuinely annoyed, one of his eyes will start to twitch.
    • He has a habit of giving his microphone staff a little twirl before planting it on the ground when he's standing still and listening to someone speak.
    • When particularly annoyed and/or angered, Alastor's ear tufts will flap backwards, as seen here.
  • Characterization Marches On: In the pilot, Alastor is a lot more open with how little faith he has in the Hotel; while he recruits Niffty for actual help, he blatantly brings in Husk because he thinks the man is there to enhance his entertainment. He even gives an Implied Death Threat to Vaggie, slaps her ass to piss her off and dedicates a whole number to mock Charlie's idea. In the series proper, though he reiterates his motivation to Vaggie, he's a lot more passive in his involvement, largely keeping to himself while occasionally helping out with a task if directly addressed. His invitation to Mimzy to come back to the Hotel if she was genuinely serious about redemption is a far cry from how he'd have went about things in the pilot. He also seems to have grown to care and enjoy being around the group, as he admitted to Nifty who shares his sentiment.
  • Chick Magnet: In his prequel comic, he visits the Cannibal Colony and is greeted by some female acquaintances that squee with glee when he drops by. Being the troll that he is, he tosses his hat to them so that the one who receives it is targeted by her envious companions.
  • Classy Cane: Has one with an old-style microphone on the end.
  • Combat Tentacles: Prominently conjures black tentacles with a green aura whenever he starts to actually fight someone, sometimes having them appear out of the ground and sometimes growing them from his back, Doctor Octopus and Raven style, when he goes One-Winged Angel.
  • Comical Coffee Cup: He has one with "Oh, Deer" written on it.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Soon as Sir Pentious comes knocking to the hotel looking for revenge, Alastor decides to swat him and his airship like a bug, and casually gets rid of him in less than a minute.
  • Curb-Stomp Cushion: His battle with Adam. While he's able to hold his own against the Exorcist, he ultimately proves no match for him and is taken out in a single hit when Adam gets serious, forcing him to retreat.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: A downplayed version. His eyes are pure red while his hair is a mixture of red and black.
  • The Dandy: Alastor is an Overlord who clearly cares a great deal about his outward appearance (including his clothing) and considers it yet another tool in his arsenal to manipulate people with. In "Radio Killed The Video Star" he immediately heads to the tailor to get his dress coat repaired after Sir Pentious rips it with no hesitation, to the point where he forgets to patch up the hole Pentious blew in the Hotel's wall and only does so after being reminded by Vaggie.
  • Dark Reprise: "Alastor's Reprise", a, well, reprise by Alastor of "Inside of Every Demon is a Rainbow", that passive aggressively mocks Charlie's aspirations, and further reinforces the point that Alastor is in this for his own entertainment, replacing the Pop-Rocky beat with a Ragtime Vaudevillian tune fitting of Alastor's aesthetics, and replacing Charlie's hopeful, optimistic lyrics with his own tauntingly pessimistic, but selfishly indulging lyrics, fitting of Alastor's personality.
Alastor: ♪ Inside of every demon is a lost cause,
But we'll dress 'em up for now, with just a smile!
And we'll chlorinate this cesspool with some old redemption flair,
And show these simpletons some proper class and style! ♪
  • A Day in the Limelight: A Day in the After Life is, well, about a day in Alastor's afterlife.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Has a moment after the Respectless song between Carmilla and Velvette.
Alastor: That was a productive meeting!
  • Deal with the Devil:
    • Hell's Overlords increase their power by bartering for the souls of other sinners, and Alastor is no different. He tries to make a deal with Charlie about helping the hotel, with the caveat that there are no manipulations or strings attached. Alastor agrees, but Charlie is still wise enough not to take the deal and instead orders him to help her "as long as he desires". Alastor agrees with a simple "Fair enough". In the past, Husk traded his soul to Alastor when he was down on his luck, which cost him his position as an Overlord.
    • He successfully makes a mundane one with Vaggie in the show proper. He'll earnestly help out in making a commercial for the hotel as long as he doesn't have to be involved with anything related to video again afterwards. Vaggie, desperately wanting to make Charlie's dream come true, reluctantly agrees. This one isn't magically binding, compared to the deal he offered Charlie, just a fair trade.
    • Husk reveals that Alastor himself is bound to someone else, a fact Alastor is determined to keep secret. The end of Season 1 reveals that he really wants to escape it by finding some loophole and its heavily implied to be keeping him from using his full power.
    • He finally makes a successful deal with Charlie in Episode 7, offering to tell her that Carmilla killed an Exorcist in exchange for her doing him a favor at a later date. The only catch is that he cannot hurt anyone as a result of the deal.
  • Deliberate Under-Performance: On assignment from Charlie to make the Hazbin Hotel's commercial, Alastor goes through quite a bit of effort to make the commercial with intentionally botched conveyance - saying nothing important and mocking the Hotel's foundation - because he believes radio is "the proper medium to express one's self" as compared to a "noisy picture box advertisement." His later deal with Vaggie makes it crystal-clear to everyone that he purposely invested all of the work and skill into tripping at the finish line just so they'd get the message of never giving him TV-related tasks again.
  • Demon of Human Origin: This is true of most demons in the Pride Ring, but especially true of Alastor, a human who became such an exceptionally powerful demon that he was able to topple long-established Overlords shortly after appearing in Hell.
  • Determined Defeatist: Averted, he fits into a rough framework of this trope, aiding and funding the hotel though he doesn't have much faith in it. In fact, Alastor openly states that he thinks demons can't be redeemed, and Charlie's goal to rehabilitate sinners is a fool's game, saying that it's too late for people to truly redeem themselves once they're in Hell. But because he thinks it's a lost cause, Alastor is still willing to invest time and energy into promoting Charlie's hotel, since if demons try to redeem themselves and inevitably fail, it'll provide Alastor with entertainment and amusement.
  • Devil in Plain Sight: Frequently Lampshaded by Vaggie. He's a sadistic monster and one of the most feared denizens of hell, explicitly stating to Charlie that he only decided to 'help' the hotel as he thought it would be funny to watch sinners try and fail to redeem themselves... But it's currently unknown as to whether he actually feels remorse for his evil acts or is manipulating the Hotel as part of some larger Evil Plan.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Minor comedic examples.
    • Whatever Alastor was expecting when he asked Angel Dust what he could do, propositioning fellatio was clearly not on the list — notably, it's the only time in the pilot he's genuinely caught off-guard, even if only for a split second.
    • A downplayed case is when Rosie casually calls him "an ace in the hole" and he directly asks what it is, sounding genuinely confused. This only lasts briefly and they're back to business in a second.
    • A non-comedic example; he was entirely confident that he could beat Adam, who he thought couldn't even land a blow on him... until Adam slashed his cane in half, and hit him with a follow-up that nearly killed him outright.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: Alastor is one of the most powerful Sinner souls to ever exist. Which still puts him several orders of magnitude below the Seven Deadly Sins and especially beneath the kind of strength Lucifer wields. Which in no way stops him actively antagonizing the King of Hell from the moment they meet. He almost seems to be enjoying the novelty of meeting someone with zero fear of him and having to come up with a completely new way of driving them round the bend.
  • Disco Dan: All sinners still carry the time-period they died in with them to some extent but they generally try to keep up with the times, Alastor refuses to embrace anything from beyond the 30's. In particular he hates TV, leading to the animosity between him and Vox.
  • Does Not Like Men: Attention isn't drawn to it, but he doesn't seem to click well with his own gender. The only male character he shows any respect is Zestial; meanwhile he's genuinely fond of Mimzy (before her actions put the hotel in danger), Niffty, and Rosie, and gets along well with Charlie. And even though he enjoys teasing and even harassing Vaggie, Alastor will help her if asked even if he looks quite reluctant. The only female character he's shown to outwardly despise is Susan, but no one likes Susan.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Per invokedWord of God, Alastor is a food snob who hates processed foods like canned cheese, colored ketchup, Easy Mac, and other such items. In the "A Day in the After Life" comic he demands that the venison from the butcher shop be carefully skinned, as he wants "fresh meat, not bubblegum." His idea of breakfast is a recently-killed deer.
  • Do Not Taunt Cthulhu: An odd example where Alastor is much closer to being "Cthulhu" than his opponent, but during the battle against the Exorcists in episode 8, Alastor is utterly confident that he's far more than a match for Adam, who he sees as a sloppy, reckless oaf whose brute force is no match for his powers. He's wrong. Alastor failed to realise that the sheer disparity in raw power between them completely obviated any difference in skill and as soon as Adam gets serious enough to connect with a big hit, he nearly one-shots Alastor.
  • The Dreaded: Known as the "Radio Demon", he's feared by most sinners as a tyrant who destroys anyone who gets in his way. Even Charlie is shown to be afraid of him, and she’s the daughter of Lucifer and Princess of Hell. It's shown in the "A Day in the After Life" comic where nearly every ordinary Sinner cowers or flees in terror at the sight of Alastor calmly taking a stroll through the city. The only beings who are unafraid of Alastor are similarly powerful Overlords such as Zestial, Rosie, and Carmilla, friendly acquaintances such as Mimzy or Niffty, and those even higher up on the food chain than he is such as Lucifer himself and Adam.

    E-I
  • Early-Installment Weirdness:
    • His personality in the pilot leaned heavily into a stereotypical radio persona, with sound effects such as canned laughter heard when he was making a joke. He was far more energetic and lively as well, his apparent enthusiasm and friendliness contrasting more heavily from his more demonic and sadistic moments. His cane was also indicated to be sentient to a degree, its "eye" moving around and talking back to Alastor during the pilot. All of this is essentially dropped after the pilot, with Alastor remaining a playful and flamboyant character but in a more smug and self-important way, with a much clearer evil undercurrent to him.
    • While still petty rivals, Alastor was shown in official comics to actually loathe Vox, keeping a calm demeanor in public and giving a profane laden rant to himself when alone just because he was exposed to hearing Vox's prattling. In the show, Vox borders on Unknown Rival territory while both sides still show animosity towards each other, Alastor remains calm and confident at all times and not even bothered by any of the T.V. Demon's words or rants.
  • Electromagnetic Ghosts: A demonic example. Attempting to film him results in an Ominous Visual Glitch and the camera breaking, which he ascribes to having 'A face built for radio'.
  • Enlightened Self-Interest: Alastor says upfront to Charlie that her plan with the Hotel is unlikely to work, but since it sounds like a fun idea for a reality show he may as well become the Big Good with no strings attached.
  • Establishing Character Moment: A blink-and-you-miss-it one before Charlie even opens the hotel door to see him; his knock is a slow, heavy, ominous "Shave and a Haircut".
  • Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: It's implied he's fond of his mother since he praises her cooking skills.
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • You wouldn't think so, but invokedWord of God confirms that Alastor has some semblance of morality. For example, according to a livestream, he will never kill or seriously harm a child, though he'd still slap one for being a little shit as he believes in that kind of discipline. Also, if a victim escapes from his grasp, he won't try to chase them down, because he considers it beneath him.
    • He also finds sexual assault — and it's implied any instance of the strong preying on the weak — to be extremely distasteful and he'll devour the perpetrators.
Alastor: You know, I do really hate those who can't show a little more respect to those of fairer means. It's rather distasteful, LIKE BAD MEAT.
    • He also keeps his word as he helps make the hotel more tidy and clean even though his reason for doing it is less sincere.
  • Evil Counterpart: He has some distinct similarities to Charlie, such as his politeness, upbeat attitude, penchant for impromptu musical numbers, and more human-like appearance that slips at times. The difference is that Charlie is an All-Loving Hero who believes every demon can be redeemed while Alastor is a feared Overlord who believes the species are Beyond Redemption.
  • Eviler than Thou: Alastor's effortless defeat of Sir Pentious at the end of the pilot shows that he's the more dangerous of the two by far.
  • Evil Has a Bad Sense of Humor: He apparently hadn't been as entertained as he was during Charlie's musical number at the TV studio since the Stock Market Crash of 1929, and chuckles as he says "so many orphans".
  • Evil Is Hammy: Considering he was a 1930s radio host in life, it's no surprise that Alastor has a knack for hamming it up like a true showman.
  • Evil Is Petty:
  • Evil Laugh: Gives us a rather chilling chuckle at the end of the first trailer. "Stay tuned, folks" indeed.
  • Evil Luddite: invokedWord of God states that Alastor dislikes most technology made after his death. In fact, his rivalry with Vox is largely about their differing views on technology.
  • Evil Mentor: In "Hello, Rosie!", he explains the purpose of him always smiling to Charlie, (see the Perpetual Smiler entry), and later, as he sees her rallying the cannibals, he hints that he sees potential in her that he wants to bring out, though in what direction is currently unknown.
Alastor: She's filled with potential that I could guide...
  • Evil Redhead: The Obviously Evil Alastor is a predominantly redhead. There are parts of his hair that are black instead of red, though they further add to identifying Alastor as evil.
  • Evil Sounds Raspy: He normally has a slightly tinny Radio Voice, but when he becomes upset or is intimidating someone not only does his voice become drier, but it becomes more distorted and twinged by radio static.
Alastor: [chuckles]    Let the slaughter begin.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: He's a powerful demon lord who broadcasts his acts of carnage over the radio so everyone can witness his abilities. Vaggie even notes how lazy his title as the "Radio Demon" is during an otherwise serious explanation of his past and power to Angel Dust.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: When putting on a Nightmare Face, the pupils in Alastor's eyes will often change into actual radio dials.
  • Expressive Ears: While his smile never leaves his face, his deer ears noticably flick back in annoyance when he first mentions Susan of Cannibal Town. They're perked back up by his next onscreen moment where he notes her an "ornery old bitch."
  • Expy: To Doctor Facilier, being a tall, lanky Louisianian who uses voodoo magic to manipulate shadows and is known for making deals. For a touch of Irony, Husk, whose soul Alastor owns, is voiced by Keith David, who once voiced Faciller.
  • Face Realization: Possibly, after the climactic fight with Adam he's distraught. But it's unclear if it's because if he died he would be remembered as a martyr for Charlies cause, or if it's because he almost was one. Either way he's quick to backpedal afterwards.
  • Fatal Flaw: Fitting for a Satanic Archetype, Pride. Alastor is every bit as powerful and dangerous as you'd expect from an Overlord of Hell, but his ego sometimes causes him to overestimate his abilities and pick fights with those more powerful than him to prove his superiority, such as antagonizing Lucifer when he comes to visit the hotel despite Lucifer being the ruler of Hell and powerful enough to reduce him to a stain on the ground if he so wanted to. This nearly gets him killed in the finale when he faces off against Adam without any angelic weaponry, who takes him out in a single blow and forces the Radio Demon to retreat. He also clearly can't stand not being the center of attention, getting visibly irked when Camilla expresses disinterest in his activities while he was away and when Lucifer discredited his work.
  • Faustian Rebellion: In his part of his song in "The Show Must Go On", after being wounded by Adam, Alastor becomes more determined than ever to find a "backdoor" in his deal with whoever owns his soul and regain his freedom.
  • Faux Affably Evil: While he can be Affably Evil towards his few genuine friendly acquaintances, or even strangers provided they stay out of his way, he tends to slip into this whenever angered or addressing his enemies. A particular moment is when interacting with Lucifer, where his superficially polite greetings barely serve as a shallow cover for insults and quickly gives way entirely to naked hostility. Or after violently threatening Husk for questioning him and bringing up his contract, whereupon he proceeds to pretend that they simply had a polite and amicable chat.
  • Fear Is the Appropriate Response: While antagonizing Lucifer and fighting Adam shows he isn’t afraid to punch above his weight class, once he realizes his life is in legitimate danger he understandably runs.
  • Foil
    • To Sir Pentious. Both are long time sinners in Hell who want nothing more than to control it all. Sir Pentious is a Harmless Villain with a massive Inferiority Superiority Complex who really fails at just about anything he attempts, and initially only fakes enthusiasm for the Hotel only to genuinely change for the better when Charlie shows him kindness. Alastor is The Dreaded Serial Killer who often gets exactly what he wants and is the successful overlord Sir Pentious would very much like to be, and he makes it clear that he has no genuine belief that sinners can change or be redeemed. Their actions at the end reflect their vastly different mindsets, Sir Pentious goes to what he knows could mean certain death to attempt saving those he cares about, even though he's massively outmatched. Alastor fights Adam until he loses the upper hand, at which point he flees for the rest of the conflict rather than risk being killed. Sir Pentious is killed and redeemed, Alastor survives and loses a bit more of what little sanity he has left.
    • To Lucifer. Both of them are extremely powerful demons of Hell with a vested interest in Charlie's Hazbin Hotel. They dress finely, command respect, and freely bully those who question them. Lucifer is a Bumbling Dad and a Stepford Smiler who is depressed from having his dreams as a Wide-Eyed Idealist blow up in his face eons ago. Alastor is a fast-talking Narcissist and a Manipulative Bastard who positions himself as a reliable source of help for Charlie solely to get a kick of watching her and the Sinners she's helping fail. Lucifer's love for Charlie is genuine despite not being the best parent to her. He's overflowing with affection for her and is constantly worried about her ideals being crushed like his were, resulting in his initial reluctance to support her. Meanwhile, Alastor calls himself a Parental Substitute for Charlie while caring nothing for her personally solely to get under Lucifer's skin.
    • To Adam. They are both exceptionally powerful despite having once belonged to mortal souls, and the Token Evil Teammate of their respective groups note . However, Adam is a crass douche whose swear count outnumbers all other characters swear count combined, whereas Alastor is an Affably Evil — or at least Faux Affably Evil Southern Gentleman who doesn't even swear, save for the occasional Precision F-Strike. This also comes down to their strengths, where Adam is the leader of the Exorcists thanks to his sheer raw power, but is little more than a brute, while Alastor hardly holds a candle to the more ancient demons but is more cunning and a technically skilled fighter. They also share the trait of thinking Charlie's dream of redeeming sinners is ridiculous. However, while Alastor at least helps Charlie's dream, if only for amusement and it's even implied that he just thinks redemption is very rare and not outright impossible, Adam rejects the idea entirely and doesn't even attempt to entertain redemption, because in his eyes all sinners deserve to be punished and eventually massacred. They're both very narcissistic, however, Alastor has shown or at least can pretend to be humble once in a while, Adam on the other hand doesn't even bother hiding his gigantic ego and gladly shoves it in everybody's face.
    • Also, to Valentino. Both of them have a main character forced into servitude and working for them against their wills due to owning their souls, Valentino has Angel Dust while Alastor has Husk. While Valentino abuses Angel Dust both psychologically and physically, and severely cuts his freedom, Alastor usually leaves Husk alone and contents himself with playfully trolling and picking on him and only becomes antagonistic with him when Husk makes him angry. Also, Alastor outright threatens Husk with tearing apart his soul if he displeases him, while Valentino uses Angel´s soul as a way to keep the spider demon as his slave and is not planning about destroying it as long as Angel makes money for Valentino. Also, Valentino tends to hit Angel when he talks back to him, while Alastor prefers to intimidate Husk into submission through fear, without physically harming him. The show tellingly doesn't treat their treatment of their slaves as worse than the other, but rather just two different kinds of the same level of bad.
  • For the Evulz: The reason he gives for wanting to support the Hotel: no one, not even Charlie herself, expects him to be up to any good when he shows up. Alastor does not even try to hide that he is not in it for any of the good reasons, he doesn't believe in its cause and finds the idea of redeeming anyone in Hell nonsense. However, his sheer, absolute boredom drove him to invest the resources into the endeavor: Charlie's disastrous promotion alone gave him more entertainment than he's had in years, and he predicts more will come if he backs the Hotel, from watching sinners try and fail to obtain redemption.
  • Forced to Watch: He got his epithet from broadcasting the carnage of his rise to power on the radio for all the denizens of Hell to hear.
  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: Alastor's default appears is a Little Bit Beastly, but when he invokes his full power he becomes more monstrous than he first appears to be.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: The visual glitching during his Nightmare Face shows an even creepier Nightmare Face with no pupils, pinpoint glowing irises against black sclera, and blood dripping from his mouth.
  • The Friend No One Likes: Being the Token Evil Teammate who is openly only in the business for his own amusement, most of the other residents of Hazbin Hotel range from being perpetually spooked or contemptuous towards Alastor. Only Niffty gets on perfectly fine with Alastor due to sharing his psychotic indulgences. Husk and Lucifer hate his guts due to his fixated trolling, and while Charlie defends him, she is also wary of him and lampshades how little he shares in the cameraderie of the group. Tellingly, when Alastor seemingly perishes in his battle against Adam, only Charlie expresses a brief bout of horror, compared to Sir Pentious (who was originally this trope prior to the group's Character Development), whose Heroic Sacrifice seconds later leaves the entire group devastated. He gets in on a group hug in the finale however, suggesting he similarly might be winning the group over (Husk and Lucifer withstanding).
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Somehow quickly went from just another sinner to one of the most powerful and feared beings in Hell, toppling powerful demons who had reigned over their territories for ages and broadcasting his acts of carnage.
  • Furry Reminder: In "Radio Killed the Video Star," before blasting away Sir Pentious, Alastor lets out an elk bugle. He also bleats like a fawn when Rosie grabs him in "Hello, Rosie!".
  • Game Face: When Vaggie tries to film him, Alastor causes her video camera to glitch out, his pupils changing into radio dials and his mouth—which doesn't move as he speaks—pulsing with light like an old-timey radio.
  • Gentleman Snarker: Alastor somehow manages to be superficially polite and yet incredibly snarky at the same time. This is how he's able to casually form some rather comical (and rather matter-of-fact) lines whenever he speaks to anyone who isn't automatically submitting to his will, in spite of being The Dreaded.
  • Glasgow Grin: His Game Face, especially when it goes into overdrive as he makes a deal with Charlie, shows that his mouth appears to be sewn open into his trademark smile. If it's actually representative of anything and not just Alastor being his usual self, it might imply his smile is even more forced than he suggests.
  • Grin of Audacity: Alastor always has his characteristic smile on and never drops it if he can help it, at worse furrowing his eyes when something displeases him. As he explains to Charlie, smiling is a show of strength that keeps your enemies guessing and always makes them think you're the one in control, so he's committing a power play over everyone he interacts with by never dropping it.
  • HA HA HA—No: When taking the measure of the hotel, Alastor asks what Angel Dust can do. Angel sarcastically says he can suck Alastor's dick. After a split second Reaction Shot, Alastor gives a curt laugh and simple "no" to the proposition. He has a similar reaction in "Overture" when Angel suggests having sex with Alastor for the commercial because Sex Sells.
    Alastor: Haha! Never gonna happen.
  • Hate at First Sight: He and Lucifer are at loggerheads practically from the moment they set eyes on each other, with a very strong mutual dislike that only intensifies as they continue interacting. While Lucifer is clearly jealous of someone else taking care of his daughter, the reason for Alastor’s enmity isn't known, beyond surface-level petty dislike over there being somebody more powerful than him he can't coerce, threaten or unnerve directly, rubbing his Pride the wrong way.
  • Hates Being Touched: According to invokedWord of God. Touch initiated by him is completely fine, however. Niffty is also an exception.
  • Hellish Pupils: When he wants to intimidate others, he can partially transform into his full demon form to turn his pupils into miniature radio dials.
  • Hell Is That Noise: Alastor's presence produces sounds associated with radios, everything from audio static to dial clicks to channel shifting sounds. They manage to be extremely ominous sounding. He can also produce things like laugh tracks, scare cords and show tunes at will.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: He's been stated to have cryptic goals that only he knows, and Vaggie is quick to distrust him even after he outright and characteristically admits to helping the hotel For the Evulz, stating that he's a "Dealmaker". During a conversation with Zestial, he downplays his absence and alliance with Charlie, finding amusement in the theories about his motives. When he learns that Carmilla killed an Exorcist, he decides to keep that information to himself, using it so he can finally get Charlie to make a deal with him, but even then the "deal" is that she do a favor for him that doesn't involve hurting anyone. By the end of the first season, the only part of his goals known is that he wants out of whatever deal landed him on someone's "leash", and wishes to be the one pulling the strings on everyone else.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite his disdain for modern video technology, he is competent in the use of it when he needs to be, making two commercials for the hotel when prodded. He is also familiar with modern terms like podcasts and buffering judging from his comments in his Quarreling Song with Vox.
  • High-Class Glass: He wears a red glass monocle over his right eye.
  • Hollywood Voodoo: Voodoo and voodoo-esque symbols appear around him when he uses his powers. As has been the subject of much scrutiny, these symbols are used to beckon spirits in actual Vodou practices, not a product of them and therefore wouldn't just randomly appear around somebody when they're using magic for no reason.
  • Horned Humanoid: He has a small set of antlers on his head in his normal form, which grow much larger in his true form. Considering he's the Token Evil Teammate, this overlaps with Horns of Villainy.
  • Horns of Villainy: Alastor normally has a pair of barely-percepibtle deer horns hidden among his giant ears which branch out in to an impressive rack of antlers in his larger form that also greatly resemble radio antennae.
  • Horrifying the Horror: Due to his reputation and the power he wields, most demons that know of Alastor are absolutely terrified of him. And then he's on the receiving end in "The Show Must Go On," where he has a breakdown over nearly dying to Adam and becoming frantic and desperate to escape whoever owns his soul.
  • Humanoid Abomination: In his regular form Alastor looks mostly human save for his red and black hair, his eyes (which have bright red irises and dark red sclerae), his permanent smile full of yellowed razor-sharp fangs, and the small antlers and cervine ears jutting from the top of his head. However, he is vastly more powerful than his appearance suggests, as he notes by saying that if he wanted to hurt people at the hotel, he would have done it when he first arrived. When he cuts loose, he transforms into an even more monstrous form with Black Eyes of Crazy, large antlers, Wolverine Claws, and black tentacles extending from his back; and he can grow large enough to swallow other Sinners whole.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: Although Charlie is the most powerful member of the staff in the Hazbin Hotel, her sweet nature and naïveté tends to mean that she fails to consider more practical, if less moral, solutions to problems and doesn't associate with the number of disreputable characters Alastor does. This generally means that when a serious enough problem presents itself Alastor is the one called upon to resolve it, usually in a gruesome and sadistic way.
  • Identity Breakdown: After the big fight and his near death in the season one finale, Alastor appears to be suffering from one of these. Caught in a conflict between his identity as a major player in Hell and a source of endless terror which he enjoys considerably, and the fact that, much to his chagrin, Charlie is rubbing off on him. Despite his insistence that he only wants to see everyone around him struggle for betterment then fail horribly, Alastor is disturbed that he's grown to care about the residents of the hotel.
  • If I Wanted You Dead...: When Vaggie threatens him, he looks more amused than anything. He then makes it very clear that if he truly had ill intent, she'd be powerless to stop him.
Alastor: Dear, if I wanted to hurt anyone here... [cue Nightmare Face]    I would have done so already.
  • I Gave My Word: For all of Alastor's very vocal beliefs that he thinks Charlie's plan is doomed to fail, he offered to help her get the place up and running, and genuinely does try to help to this end. He enforces the rules of the hotel on one of his friends who used it as a safe house and brought violence to it, and defends it when Heaven conducts the Extermination at the end of the first season. Part of this is that Alastor's belief that demons are beyond redemption is what's motivating him to help the hotel, but he wants the demons to genuinely try and still fail, because setting them up to fail wouldn't be any fun for him to watch.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: Husk reveals that Alastor's soul is bound to someone else via contract and one of his driving motivations is to break free of said contract, especially after he nearly gets killed by Adam in a fight, potentially derailing his long-term ambitions.
'I'm hungry for freedom like never before!
The constraints of my deal surely have a back door!
Once I figure out how to unclip my wings
Guess who will be pulling all the strings?! (Evil Laugh)''
  • I Just Want to Be Special: At the end of the day, what Alastor desires most is to be respected, feared, and most of all, acknowledged.
  • Immortals Fear Death: His brush with death during the final battle against Adam clearly leaves him deeply rattled, and he becomes more determined than ever to find a way out of his contract with whoever owns his soul so that something like this can never happen to him again.
  • Implied Death Threat:
    • In "A Day in the After Life", when a butcher starts to reach for a meat cleaver and attack him, Alastor not-so-subtly threatens him to back off.
Alastor: Do you have any fresh venison? I do love a nice top sirloin, but I am partial to venison myself. Reminds me of simpler times... (slams hand on table)    AND WE ALL LOVE TO RETURN TO SIMPLER TIMES, DO WE NOT?
    • In the series proper, when the Egg Bois' incessant questions start to grate on Alastor's nerves, he, in his own polite way, threatens them to shut up.
Alastor: Follow in silence if you value your shells.
  • Inexplicably Awesome: Part of the reason he's so feared is that he wields power no mortal soul has ever had before, and nobody knows how. It's implied that it's at least partially connected to a Deal with the Devil that he made, but with who, and how they could give him such power, is unclear.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Implied. While Alastor normally carries himself with a suave and confident demeanor, it soon becomes clear that he's not as in control as he would like everyone to believe.
    • Mimzy explains that his MO of broadcasting his killings of other Overlords on the radio was done to terrorize the populace and to show what happens to those who dare cross the Radio Demon.
    • When Charlie's father Lucifer visits the hotel and (driven by his own desire to please his estranged daughter) snubs the work Alastor has put into the Hotel as second rate compared to what the King of Hell could offer, he suddenly becomes invested in the Hotel when he'd previously claimed it was just an amusing distraction to him, clearly insulted by the snub. He even goes so far as to antagonize Lucifer himself over his insecurities about not being a great father to Charlie, even giving him an uncharacteristic "Fuck You" when Lucifer insults his sense of creativity, despite the fact that Lucifer is the ruler of Hell itself and is leagues more powerful than he is.
    • Later, it's revealed that Alastor's own soul is bound via contract to someone else, a fact he is deeply insecure about and is determined to never let anyone else find out, wanting to be seen as powerful and invincible. Husk daring to bring up that fact is enough to send the normally calm and confident Radio Demon into a fit of genuine rage and threaten him with a Fate Worse than Death if he ever brings it up again.
Alastor: If you ever say that again, I will tear your soul apart, and broadcast your screams for every other disrespectful WRETCH who dares to question me.
    • During his song in "The Show Must Go On", though he keeps his trademark smile, the lyrics and the increasing panic in his voice make it clear that his near death at Adam's hand rattled him to the core and he is more determined than ever to escape whatever contract is binding his soul.
  • Instant Cosplay Surprise: During his song "Inside of Every Demon Is a Lost Cause", he dresses all the current residents of the hotel to match a 1930s aesthetic.
  • Instant Costume Change: During the song “Hell’s Greatest Dad,” Alastor sings, “Who’s been here since day one? Who’s been faithful as a nun?” and suddenly appears next to Charlie wearing a nun’s habit, complete with a red inverted cross on its bandeau.
  • Interface Screw: Alastor can't be filmed on video, footage and live-feed glitching out whenever a camera is on him. This is due to him detesting film as a medium so much that it manifests as a Walking Techbane ability for him. When Vaggie tries filming him directly, it fries the camera.
Alastor: I wouldn't try that, my dear.    This face was made for Radio.
  • Irony:
    • One of the most dangerous and feared denizens of hell, with a penchant for literally preying on other demons, has the Animal Motif of a deer, a prey animal usually considered peaceful and harmless. Though a case of Shown Their Work; deer will supplement their diet with meat if it's easily available — for example, munching on nestling birds. More obviously, stags can be very territorial and aggressive, and on one notable occasion a stag was seen to have the severed head of its rival caught in its antlers.
    • While Alastor detests visual media and has an ongoing feud with Vox the TV Demon, he first became aware of Charlie and her ambitions for the hotel via watching a television news broadcast.
  • It Amused Me: After watching Charlie's Happy Hotel pitch during the news fall apart, this becomes the reason Alastor provided when he's asked why he even wants to help the hotel, when he's made it clear he thinks her cause is "wacky nonsense". He even seems to go along with her ordering him to help instead of making a deal just because he found her doing something he simply found that amusing. He takes particular delight in pissing off Vaggie as much as possible.
Alastor: Why does anyone do anything? Sheer, absolute boredom!
  • It's All About Me: Downplayed, but present. Alastor is very self centered, only helping Charlie and the Hotel for amusement and the potential to mold her/make a deal with her for his benefit. The only times he'll actually go out of his way to benefit anyone else is when something would also affect him as well, such as when the next Extermination firmly places him with a target on his back. His slipping away from the battle against Adam is understandable when he is wounded and outmatched, but his lines in "Finale" isn't about relief the others are alive, it's about how being close to death terrified him and how much he wants out of his deal so that he may properly do as he sees fit.

    J-O
  • Jacob Marley Apparel: His Game Face and the occasional Glamour Failure reveals a red "X" marked on his forehead, presumably representing the bullet wound that ended his life when he was mistaken for a deer by a random hunter. His full demon form also has stitches across his limbs and over his mouth, though whether these are representative of anything is unclear.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • His mockery of the Hotel as a concept is rather cruel, but his skepticism of the idea that the demons of hell can be redeemed is hard not to understand. Most of the denizens of Hell are terrible people. It's hard not to understand why someone would be skeptical that any of them have a shot at becoming anything close to good. And he's also right that everyone in Hell had their whole lives to clean up their acts and become good, but never did. Additionally, Hell’s residents have had decades, if not, centuries to improve but still refuse to do so. If anything, most sinners have gotten worse than when they were on Earth. And given that Adam already used this exact same reasoning to shoot down Charlie's proposal, his belief that it's too late for everyone in Hell is perfectly justified. At the very least, it's unlikely that Heaven will be accepting any redeemed demons any time soon. He is ultimately proven wrong when Sir Pentious dies and is sent to heaven for sacrificing himself to save the hotel, though it's downplayed in that none of the cast are aware of this and Pentious is the first and only demon to be redeemed in Hell's 10,000 yearlong existence.
    • Alastor was being a gleeful asshole about it when he repeatedly poked fun at Charlie's predicament of Heaven's army continuing their Extermination and targeting the Hotel first, but he makes a good point to one thing - Charlie's moping around about it, isn't going to solve the problem.
  • Jerkass to One: While he's a feared Overlord who was a serial killer in life, he's usually fairly pleasant and civil. Even with Vaggie, he enjoys trolling her, but doesn't seem to feel any great malice towards her. The one exception to this affability is Vox, who he genuinely seems to despise. He’s the only demon Alastor hurls insults and swears at. Dad Beat Dad adds Lucifer to his list of exceptions, and the feeling is definitely mutual.
  • Karmic Death: In life, he had a preference for burying his murder victims on a deer hunting ground. It ultimately proved his undoing, as he ended up mistaken for a deer and shot by a hunter while making a burial there, which had the added insult of his demon form being an anthropomorphic deer. Considering his Pride, it's probably also doubly karmic that his life was ultimately ended on accident by a random hunter of no known repute.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: Implied. After being a Serial Killer in life, Alastor is sent to Hell... Where he promptly gains reality-warping powers and becomes one of the most powerful entities in the realm. It seems as if he actually benefitted from eternal damnnation, but after decades of this existence, his punishment seems to have come in the form of crushing boredom. The actual warranty is tied to the mysterious deal he made with somebody else, something that deeply upsets him and is determined to find a backdoor out of. It's implied that his above-average powers for a mortal soul is a consequence of this deal, but what Alastor has to do on his end of the bargain is unclear, save that he wishes to exploit it to maintain the powers to fuel his greater ambitions of "pulling all the strings".
  • Kitschy Local Commercial: The commercial Alastor films for the Hotel serves mostly as a mouthpiece for his opinions on how horrible it is, filmed entirely by him, and even brags about how he gave it its awful name.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: After nearly getting killed by Adam in the battle against the Exorcists, he disappears into shadow and only returns once the Exorcists have fled.
Alastor: Radio's not dead, but it is ending this broadcast!
  • Lame Comeback: Alastor normally has a witty comeback when he's usually talking down on people. But in "Dad Beat Dad", after Lucifer snubs him of his work and tells him the name he came up for the hotel isn't very clever, Alastor's only response is an uncharacteristic, blunt "Fuck you", which shows that Lucifer really got under his skin if his response is a swear word he would rarely ever say.
  • Large Ham: He talks as if he's still a 1930s radio host, complete with a bombastic inflection and over-the-top personality.
  • Laughably Evil: No question he’s evil, but Alastor also has some goofy moments, such as his reaction to being offered a blowjob by Angel, that provide some levity to his character. His sadistic personality, while disturbing, is so over-the-top, fast-paced, and full of charm that it also just comes across as hilarious. Is it any wonder his Ax-Crazy radio show was a success?
  • Laugh Track: An audience of canned laughter apparently comes with the radio voice, triggered by some of his wisecracks/insults.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: In terms of how he treats the sinners under his contract compared to Valentino, specifically in regards his ownership of Husk's soul to Val's ownership of Angel's. While Husk is absolutely working for him against his will and none too happy about that, Alastor's only request of Husk is to act as the bartender, and Husk spends most of that time drinking as a perk of the job. Otherwise, Alastor appears not to care what Husk does day-to-day. Val, on the other hand, overworks Angel and abuses him physically, emotionally, and sexually. While Alastor can be pressed into making pretty gruesome threats, it takes a lot to set him off.
  • Little Bit Beastly: He's a deer demon but apart from a deer’s ears and antlers, he looks relatively human.
  • Living Shadow: Alastor's shadow acts independent of him, and he seems not to cast one unless it chooses to manifest.
  • Long-Range Fighter: When fighting, Alastor rarely attacks someone physically, often attacking from a distance using his shadow powers.
  • Loves the Sound of Screaming: Implied. The mysterious radio broadcasts he sent out across Hell after killing high-ranking Overlords were just recordings of their screams, and he threatens to broadcast Husk's screaming in the same way after Husk makes a remark about him being on a leash.
  • Make an Example of Them: Mimzy explains that his MO of broadcasting his killings of other Overlords on the radio was done to terrorize the populace and to show what happens to those who dare cross the Radio Demon.
  • Manipulative Bastard: It's shown that Alastor makes no attempts to hide his desire to make a deal with Charlie at the first opportunity, and is also also attempting to mold Charlie to benefit him specifically. His delight in the fact Charlie made a deal with him only brings immediate and understandable concern to Husk and Vaggie.
  • Man of Wealth and Taste: He's sharp-dressed, well-spoken, has fine taste in decoration, and is one of the most powerful and feared entities in Hell.
  • Mask of Sanity: There are a few moments that imply that Alastor's Southern Gentleman demeanor is merely a cover for something far less composed. He teasingly tells Charlie that just because he's smiling all the time doesn't mean that he's showing his true emotions. In particular, his part in the song at the end of "The Show Must Go On" shows him in a Villainous Breakdown after his near-death at Adam's hands, desperate to escape the deal binding him, but when he shows up to join the group later he's seemingly his normal self again, implying that he's being a Stepford Smiler.
  • Master of the Mixed Message: Alastor loves to keep people guessing. He can act like an Affably Evil gentlemen then switch to a coldblooded, Narcissist who loves to see people suffer. Sometimes he'll be kind to the Hotel occupants but at other times, he'll be cruel.
  • Meaningful Name: His name can also mean "tormentor" in Ancient Greek. Perfect for someone who was a Serial Killer in life who would announce his kills on the radio. It also fits his trollish tendencies. It's very appropriate with his relationship with Husk, who is enslaved to Alastor's will and forced to do whatever he wants with the Radio Demon uncaring of any inconvenience it brings him, from "volunteering" him to work at the Hotel when he was in the middle of winning a poker game, to threatening him with destroying his soul if he ever mentions that Alastor is likewise enslaved to another's will, a fact that torments Alastor.
  • The Minion Master: He possesses the ability to summon shadow minions to do his bidding from an unknown source. As soon as they're no longer needed, they disappear again.
  • Missing Reflection: Camera variant — Alastor can't be filmed, as cameras glitch out and in extreme cases break whenever it's attempted, and video footage with him in it shows him distorted by static and glitches. As Alastor himself puts it, his face was "made for radio".
  • Monstrous Cannibalism: Twofold:
    • Alastor was turned into a humanoid deer after appearing in Hell, but remarks he's partial to venison in A Day In The After Life and Episode 3 of the series shows him eating the corpse of a deer for breakfast.
    • A Day In The After Life features him butchering and devouring a demon and he swallows a loan shark Sinner—who just so happens to be a humanoid shark—whole in "Dad Beat Dad" while roaring that he's going to eat the rest of them too.
  • Mood-Swinger: Can shift tone between Affably Evil and Ax-Crazy on a dime. When Vaggie threatens him, his cheerful exterior melts away, showing that he is very capable of killing everyone present, only to snap right back to affable once he's made his point. And after completely destroying Sir Pentious in a Curb-Stomp Battle and thoroughly enjoying it, he cheerfully asks if anyone wants jambalaya and chatters on about how his mother used to make it.
  • Mook Maker: He can seemingly spawn smaller demons at will, which he exploits to distract Adam.
  • Motor Mouth: He speaks in a fast, upbeat manner much like a 30s radio host, which was his occupation during life.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: A demon based around old-timey radios is not something you'd expect to be interesting or threatening. You'd be wrong.
  • Mysterious Backer: The "Radio Demon" is the being that kick-starts Charlie's project. No one knows exactly why, though. Everyone assumes it's sinister, and his excuse is that watching the devils desperately trying to claw their way out of damnation only to fall back down because they're ultimately irredeemable is going to be hilarious.
  • Mysterious Past: Both in life and in Hell. When he first appeared, he effortlessly dethroned several overlords who had reigned for hundreds of years, and broadcast it on radio, just for fun. How Alastor got so powerful is unknown, as new sinners are usually very weak. "Dad Beat Dad" reveals that his own soul is bound to someone else, implying that he made a deal in exchange for power.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: His "Radio Demon" title may be a bit lazy, but his accomplishments make it feared across Hell. The second Vaggie hears Charlie mention him, she tells her not to let him into the hotel, and later warns her not to make any deals with or trust him in any way.
  • Narcissist: While he looks practically humble next to the god-complex, ego-stroking Adam, Alastor doesn't admire anyone more than himself.
  • Neat Freak: According to Viv in a livestream, Alastor somewhat is and isn't a neat freak. He doesn't mind being covered in blood and other gross things but he'll still calmly clean himself afterward. He's somewhat sophisticated and weird in this matter, being more bothered by messy eaters than carving up a carcass. When Sir Pentious tears his coat, that tiny action gets Alastor to acknowledge him and be rather annoyed, whereas attacking him more than twenty times was treated flippantly.
  • Never Gets Drunk: Downplayed, but according to Mimzy, he was able to drink like a sailor and still keep up with her on the dance floor.
  • New Technology Is Evil: Alastor was a radio talk host in life who arrived in Hell around the time radio was still pretty new, and used this technology to spread terror among other demons. This is a straight use of this trope for his day. Ironically, he himself dislikes modern technology.
  • Nice to the Waiter: The prequel comic shows him being surprisingly courteous to others, like the employees of a cafe he's visiting and a streetside saxophone player, who he tosses a coin to.
  • The Nicknamer: He rarely addresses people by their names and gives them pet names instead.
  • Nightmare Face: He does this frequently. He can speak without opening his mouth while his teeth eerily pulse with light alongside his eyes as he does so. One of his best gives him black sclera, radio dials for pupils, and a massive fanged smile. The one he pulls in A Day in the After Life one-ups that one by giving him black-pit eyes, an even bigger fanged smile, and proportions that are practically Burtonesque.
  • No Love for the Wicked: Alastor is completely detached from humanity, as he was a sadistic Serial Killer in life and upon entering Hell became an Evil Overlord gleefully spreading pain and misery for his own amusement. He Hates Being Touched and is put off by flirting, which is unfortunate considering the fact that he's surrounded by sexual deviants like Angel. His fellow Overlord Rosie playfully refers to him as "an ace (asexual) in the hole". Unlike most examples of this trope, however, his actual asexuality isn't portrayed as off-putting or creepy but instead just a normal aspect of him, sometimes even being Played for Laughs. If anything, his asexuality and obliviousness towards it is one his more adorable and genuinely endearing traits.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: Downplayed. Alastor is extraordinarily powerful in Hell despite having only been a normal human serial killer in life, but that power is only relative to other human sinners. The most powerful demons (including Charlie, who's held back by her generally pacifistic temperament) are Hellborn, not damned sinners. Compared to upper level demons like the Royal family, the rulers of the Seven Deadly Sins, or Goetic demons like Stolas, he's mid-ranged at best. He's feared because he has power beyond most other mortal souls, and while he did make his career knocking off other Overlords, he's not so powerful that the other Overlords treat him as anything more than a rival or colleague. He's certainly not their leader. After all, they're all dangerous in some way, and those that exist in the present are, in at least some cases, those that survived his prior rampage. It's even implied that Zestial is comparable to him in power, though the difference in their ages still illustrates why Alastor is special.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: None whatsoever, he's happy to invade everyone’s personal space. He even shapeshifts their clothes to fit his song's aesthetic. Especially surprising since he also has a severe case of Hates Being Touched.
  • Nostalgia Filter: As someone who has died in 1933, Alastor openly despises modern technology and treats radio broadcasts as a form of art.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: A recurring theme with Alastor is that he plays his cards very close to the chest and rarely lets out any genuine hints about what he's up to or what he's really capable of, leaving others with a sense of foreboding and unease, especially when he does cut lose with his true power in displays of might that shouldn't be possible for a mortal-born soul. Alastor maintains a Perpetual Smiler attitude to always deceive others as to his actual feelings or opinions, believing showing anything other than a confident smile is a sign of weakness. Mimzy regals the Hotel inhabitants with the tale of how Alastor made a name for himself as The Radio Demon, showing up in Hell one day and specifically targeting Overlords — real heavy-hitters, too — and spiriting them away without a trace. The only hint as to what became of them was the radio broadcasts he spread throughout Hell with their perpetual screams sounding on it, making sure everyone knew he was responsible, but nothing else.
  • Not in This for Your Revolution: He makes it clear that he thinks Charlie's dream of rehabilitation is a joke. Redeeming a sinner is impossible — as far as he's concerned, the denizens of Hell had their chance to be good when they were alive, and they wasted it. But that isn't going to stop him from helping her, if only to watch the suffering of every sinner that tries. And when he nearly gets killed by Adam in "The Show Must Go On", he hightails it out of there, not wanting to die for a cause he never cared about in the first place.
  • Not So Above It All: He rarely swears and generally puts on an air of smug superiority but an encounter with Vox has him cursing in a very immature and petulant manner.
    • "Stayed Gone" has Alastor using more modern words and phrases such as "podcast" and "that's the tea," despite him being adamant about preferring older technology over modern technology. The implication is that he is aware of how modern slang works, and he is willing to use it if he can use it to his advantage (in this case, he was deliberately aggravating Vox).
    • Alastor is not above wasting his own time, exerting his talents for throwaway reasons, and/or making a fool of himself to get a point across. By the time of "Overture", Charlie had somehow convinced him to film a commercial for the Hotel on his own time. He hates 'picture shows', but decided to make the most of it by writing the commercial in the most satirical way possible. Despite also having a legion of minions and owned souls like Husk with which to do all of the production hands-off and out of his sight, he took the piss by running around with a camera himself, harassing people to get the footage himself, and then personally editing it all together into a fairly competent satire that makes Charlie and Vaggie question why he didn't just get it over with properly on the first try. One can only imagine the third-person sight of Alastor running around and intentionally making an ass of himself with a camera. The sugar on the cream is that the commercial showcased that his filming and editing skills are sufficient, but it couldn't be used - per his intention - because he doesn't want to endorse television even slightly.
    • While he never loses his smile, "Scrambled Eggs" shows Alastor appearing genuinely annoyed that Carmilla isn't interested in where exactly he's been the past seven years, which contrasts with Zestial being more cordial and curious. Also, while he does get annoyed by Sir Pentious' Egg Bois' idiocy, he still remains calm and maintains his smile, only showing his annoyance towards them through his Twitchy Eye, which marks the closest he's ever gotten to losing his cool outright at that point in the show.
  • Not So Invincible After All: Alastor is presented as an extraordinarily powerful demon among Sinners, with any fight he gets into coming off as a minor annoyance to him and no one daring to really try their luck against him. Then he fights Adam, and that aura of invincibility is shattered when Adam comes within a hair's breadth of ending him, forcing Alastor to retreat in defeat for once.
  • Obviously Evil: Even by Hell's standards. He has a well-earned reputation for being sketchy at best and is feared by just about everyone who knows of him.
  • Oh, Crap!: He has a moment during his fight with Adam when the latter breaks his cane, realizing he's in way over his head, his voice notably losing the radio effect it always has.
    Alastor: What just happened? ...Fuck.
  • Older Than They Look: He died in the 1930s, yet still looks like a man in his late thirties to early forties.
  • Old Media Are Evil: Alastor is associated heavily with radio, and opposes Vox, who is associated with television and new media. Subverted slightly in that New Media Are Evil too, in Vox's case.
  • Ominous Visual Glitch:
    • When confronted by a protective Vaggie, Alastor calmly responds that if he wanted to hurt anyone at the hotel, he would've done so already. To drive the point across, he shows off a bit of his power which manifests visually with the screen heavily glitching while he makes a very nightmarish face.
    • On the official character Instagram accounts, there's a Running Gag that Alastor's face can't ever be photographed properly as if he's some sort of cryptid. In most photos, he's either out of shot or obscured by something in the way. In photos taken where he would be directly seen, it's either the entire photo is distorted or simply just his face covered by distortions. The distortions on these are framed to look very demonic and highlight Alastor's nature.
    • In the series proper, he is actually established to hate cameras and uses his powers to cause them to glitch out when he is filmed. All instances in the show where he is on camera have him distorted. When Vaggie points a camera at him to film a commercial, the camera distorts and malfunctions on her. A security camera also distorts as he walks by it.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • Two instances in A Day in the After Life. The first is when he unleashes a torrent of curses after a run-in with Vox. This is especially noteworthy since Alastor is one of the only main characters who doesn't utter a single swear word. The second is when he murders a butcher for attempting to rape or butcher one of his customers. This, as far as we know, is the only time he's killed someone and hasn't put it on the radio for the denizens of Hell to witness.
    • Similarly to the above, when Charlie's father Lucifer visits the hotel and snubs the work Alastor puts in maintaining the hotel, the Radio Demon responds with a rather blunt "Fuck You", which is very uncharacteristic of him given he's one of the few characters in the show to not swear.
    • Alastor is normally tolerant of Husk and is unfazed when he talks back to him despite owning his soul. But when Husk dares to bring up the fact that Alastor's own soul is bound to someone else via contract, Alastor goes full One-Winged Angel and flat-out threatens Husk with a Fate Worse than Death should he ever bring it up again, leaving Husk Quaking with Fear at the normally unflappable Alastor showing pure, genuine rage.
    • During "The Show Must Go On", Alastor is still smiling when singing about his survival, but his eyes show that he's genuinely terrified that he almost died to Adam. His lyrics and the increasing panic in his voice also make it clear that he's becoming desperate to escape from whoever it is he's bound to. It's a shocking display for someone like Alastor, who always keeps an unflappable demeanor, even when it seems like shit has hit the fan big time.
  • Opportunistic Bastard: Alastor has a habit of trying to make deals with people when they're in desperate situations or bad mental states, as part of his being The Social Expert. He managed to bag Husk's soul despite Husk being an Overlord due to his gambling addiction leaving him in a precarious spot he was willing to do anything to get out of, and his first thought after hearing that Charlie is moping in her room alone after her disastrous appeal to Heaven is to go up, belittle and mock her and eventually leverage some information he has that she doesn't to secure a Magically-Binding Contract with her.
  • Outside-Context Problem: Became one to the established Overlords, because he somehow wielded more power than any sinner-demon has ever had on their arrival in Hell. No one can figure out how he managed this either, and his motivations remain a mystery too, since he was seemingly deposing centuries-old powers just to cause chaos and not bothering to take over their territories.

    P-R
  • Parental Substitute: Ultimately averted. Alastor's interactions with Charlie have been cordial for the most part (when he's not mocking her and her dreams), but they haven't been shown to be particularly close. In fact, in Hello Rosie, Charlie straight up tells him that all he does is stand there and gawk at the staff and guests' struggles. During Dad Beats Dad, Alastor boasts that he and Charlie are close and that he sees her as a daughter, though he only seems to say it because he's trying to hit Lucifer where it hurts most.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: Whatever he did to the Overlords of Hell whose screams he broadcast.
  • Perpetual Smiler:
    • He's always seen smiling, with a Slasher Smile no less. A tweet from the official Hazbin Twitter account and as well as one from invokedVivzie's account explain that this is because Alastor believes that smiling shows power and dominance. He looks down on anyone who lets their other emotions show. Even when faced with a rival in strength, if they let slip a frown, he will see them as weak. Fittingly, according to invokedWord of God, his favorite song is "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile" from Annie. He even hums the first few bars of the song in the pilot.
Alastor: (mockingly tickles Vaggie's chin) Smile, my dear! You know you're never fully dressed without one!
    • Charlie eventually points out Alastor's perpetual smile and says she can't understand how he can enjoy watching everyone fail and just enjoy their suffering. He replies that a smile isn't always an indicator of mood, it's a tool. Given that his mysterious deal means that he's not in full control, his smile can be seen as constant defiance of this fact and a symbol of his determination to gain true freedom.
Alastor: Just because you see a smile, don't think you know what's going on underneath. A smile is a valuable tool, my dear. It inspires your friends, keeps your enemies guessing, and ensures that no matter what comes your way, you're the one in control.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • The "Day in The Afterlife" comic shows him giving money to a street musician playing the saxophone, and later saving the life of a sheep demon.
    • He also offers to make Jambalaya to the others after taking care of Sir Pentious which also includes Vaggie as well even though she does not like him very much.
    • Played with, when Sir Pentious becomes a resident, he is fine welcoming him to the hotel, if in his usual mocking way. Of course, Sir Pentious being on his side is Actually Pretty Funny for Alastor, since it means Vox essentially delivered his first proper client to him.
    • In "Scrambled Eggs", despite being tasked by Vaggie to get rid of Sir Pentious' Egg Bois (humanely) and he finds them annoying, Alastor honors Vaggie's request not to harm them and ultimately brings them back to the hotel for proving useful to him. And even though he knows that Frank knows that Carmilla killed an Angel and he could potentially reveal it to someone (which he does to Sir Pentious, who doesn't believe him), instead of killing him to keep it a secret, he settles for threatening him into compliance.
    • In "Dad Beat Dad", he does however kick out Mimzy (who seemed to be friends with him) due to the destruction she wrought on the hotel, telling her to come back if she genuinely wants to give redemption a try — which he doubts she does.
  • Picky Eater: The Australian Wildfire Charity Stream reveals him to be a food snob.
  • Playing Both Sides: Heavily downplayed, but while he makes it clear he believes in the failure of the hotel he still backs it and brings in some more staff. The main difference is while the demons of hell are apathetic to the hotel's failures and take them for granted, Alastor specifically wants the hotel to get off its feet first, and then fail to redeem anybody, because it's better when the losing party is actually given a chance.
  • Playing with Fire: His hands occasionally appear to light on fire a few times when he uses his powers, and when he summons Niffty, he makes a burst of fire appear in the Hotel lobby's fireplace.
  • Power Echoes: Of a sort. Alastor was a radio show host in-life, and as a demon his voice is almost always distorted the same way a radio from the 1920s or 30s would—showing that his title of the Radio Demon isn't just for show and emphasizing his nature as one of the most powerful Overlords, since he's the only demon with a distorted voice.
  • Power Limiter: It's implied he's still not at full power due to the deal he made with an unspecified entity 'clipping his wings', and he's trying to undo it.
  • Powers Do the Fighting: Alastor never physically attacks anyone, preferring to summon tentacles and demons to do it for him.
  • Practically Joker: He's got more than a bit of The Joker about him: aesthetically, he's a tall, thin, ashen-pallor man who smiles all the time and wears sharp, brightly colored suits. In terms of personality, he's an outwardly jovial and superficially charismatic yet utterly remorseless and sadistic murderer who showed up out of nowhere and quickly established himself as the biggest villain around by slaughtering competing demons with minimal effort. He's also an avid showman with a wicked sense of humor and an unfailingly cynical worldview. Both he and the Joker have a connection to a bubbly, upbeat young blonde woman in black-and-red attire (Charlie and Harley Quinn respectively), and their chief rivals in villainy — Sir Pentious and The Penguin, respectively — are old-fashioned aristocratic types in black suits and top-hats.
  • Pragmatic Villainy:
    • The reason that Alastor provides genuine contributions to the Hazbin Hotel is because if he just tried to sabotage everything, that wouldn't be any fun for him. He wants to see demons fail in the attempt to redeem themselves because he thinks it will be amusing to watch them struggle. So setting them up to fail would prove nothing, and thus not be fun to watch. He brings this up with Mimzy, telling her to Get Out! of the hotel after she brought disruptive destruction to it as collateral in seeking Alastor's aid, but concedes that she can stay if she's genuine about trying for redemption, even if he himself thinks its a fool's errand.
    • In the first episode of the show, Alastor is refusing to help make a commercial because he doesn't do TV; he only does radio. Vaggie points out that if nobody comes to the Hazbin Hotel in the first place, Alastor won't get to have his fun watching them try and fail. Alastor concedes the point, and agrees to help make the commercial.
  • Precision F-Strike:
    • Notable in that despite being the most evil of the main cast, he doesn't swear all that often, but when he and Lucifer get into passive aggressive Volleying Insults, Alastor can barely hold back his anger and say "Haha, fuck you."
    • When confronting Adam in "The Show Must Go On", he tells him he's here to "end his fucking life". And when Adam manages to break his cane, his response is a curt "Fuck" as he realizes how screwed he really is.
  • Pride: While he usually hides it well behind a charming nonchalant attitude, Alastor is incredibly proud, to the point where it could almost be a Fatal Flaw. Fittingly, Lucifer, the literal Sin of Pride gets under his skin easily exploiting said vice, by mocking not only the name Alastor thought up for the Hotel but also using said idea against him, calling the Radio Demon a has-been in the process, angering Alastor so much that he volleys a rare Precision F-Strike at Lucifer. What's more, his berserk buttons tie in nicely with his pride: he hates being dismissed, treated as forgettable, or implying his power is beneath that of another. Something as petty as ruining his clothes is enough to make him remember you (which isn't a good thing). Shown in full force by his reaction to nearly getting killed by Adam. It's the first time in years that Alastor has truly felt vulnerable and he hates that feeling immensely, becoming even more determined to break free of whatever contract is binding him and desiring to take over all of Hell itself.
  • Psycho for Hire: He's an Ax-Crazy Serial Killer hired to be Charlie's facilities manager and he absolutely revels in the opportunity he gets to defend the titular hotel from those who dare to destroy it. This is only when he knows he can take them down, however, as shown when Adam, who is much more powerful than him, attempts to do just this in the Season 1 finale, and he bails from the fight.
  • Psycho Sidekick: To Charlie. While Charlie is an All-Loving Princess Classic who genuinely believes that sinners can be redeemed and be welcomed into Heaven, and firmly believes in that goal, Alastor himself is an Ax-Crazy sadistic Overlord feared by everyone, including Charlie herself for a brief moment, who only wants to help the Hotel so he can watch it inevitably crash down when it fails and revel in the agony that follows.
  • Radio Voice: Fitting for the one they call "Radio Demon", his voice sounds as if he's talking on the radio. It slips on occasion, perhaps when he wants to add emphasis to a sentence, and it comes with a Laugh Track and a few sound effects. When he starts upping the ante on his intimidation game, it subtly starts becoming more prominent until it borders on Computer Voice. Even some of his movements come with radio-esque sound effects, such as when Charlie removes his hand from her shoulder and it sounds like she’s repositioning a piece of sound equipment.
  • Ragin' Cajun: One of Hell's most feared Overlords, and from Louisiana in life. He was probably one while he was alive as well.
  • Reality Warper: Alastor can do things like summon Husk to the Hotel from a poker game elsewhere in Hell (including bringing parts of the scenery with him and integrating it into the hotel), change the outfits of himself and the others at the Hotel for his musical number to make them look like they'd just stepped into the 1930s, and a lot more.
  • Real Men Cook: He offers to make the hotel's staff jambalaya at the end of the pilot.
  • Real Men Eat Meat:
    • According to invokedWord of God, he's an avid foodie with a special fondness for meat. He even makes it a rule to visit any new meat shop that opens up. He’ll also eat people raw if they particularly displease him.
    • In "Scrambled Eggs," he eats the raw flesh of a dead deer for breakfast.
  • Real Men Hate Sugar: invokedWord of God has it that Alastor doesn't like sweets.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Sort of; despite his massive power and influence, he's pretty laid back about letting lower demons mouth off to him. However, this does have its limits. When Husk makes the mistake of bringing up the fact that Alastor's soul is bound to someone else via contract, Alastor forgoes all politeness and flat-out threatens to tear Husk's soul apart if he ever brings it up again.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Fitting for a demonic serial killer, he has a predominantly red and black color scheme.
  • Red Baron: "The Radio Demon". He was a radio host when he was alive in the 1930s, constantly sounds like he's on the radio, and broadcast his conquests over the radio in Hell as a method of intimidation. Vaggie claims the title is boring, but Alastor makes up for it by being The Dreaded.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His eyes have blood-red sclera and bright red irises. He was a serial killer in life and is notorious enough in Hell to have posters warning demons to stay away from him.
  • Red Right Hand: Though subtle, his True Eldritch form has red-lines resembling stitches running across his body, with a particular cross-shaped mark showing up on his forehead. Supplementary material reveals this and his Deer-themed appearance is a symbolic reference to the manner of his death, as per the rules governing Hell's inhabitants when they first manifest. Alastor was accidentally killed via Boom, Headshot! from a hunter that mistook him for a deer when he was burying one of his victims' bodies out in the woods.
  • Renaissance Man: In addition to his unholy powers and negotiating skills, he's a man of many talents: he can cook, sing, dance, and play several instruments.

    S-Y
  • Sadist: He states openly that he is backing the hotel because he revels in watching people fail to better themselves. He also has a very deep smile as he obliterates Sir Pentious' blimp.
  • Satanic Archetype: While Satan exists in this setting, Alastor seems to check all the boxes for the archetype for the story proper. He is a bright red, smooth-talking demon with Faux Affably Evil tones who commands his own little legion, he possesses some level of Reality Warping that he uses to torment the people around him and tempt people with their vices (like having a bar full of cheap liquor appear for Husk) to buy their loyalty and he only volunteers to help run the Hotel because he would get to see demons try and fail to ascend to Heaven and then wallow in the misery of their own failure. Beyond this, when he’s seen examining the family portrait in the hotel, Lucifer and Alastor look eerily similar. When the two come to verbal blows, it results in a song battle on which of them can offer Charlie the better deal, with a lot of faustian bargain subtext such as Lucifer offering the "family discount" and Alastor doing some emotional manipulating to get Charlie to choose him instead. If you hypothetically remove the context of the song just being Alastor and Lucifer trying to win Charlie over as a Take That! to each other, it would come across as Alastor attempting to out-Satan Satan.
  • Scare Chord: His introduction has this, as does his brief Nightmare Face slip.
  • Scary Teeth: While having a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth is par the course for Hell, Alastor's stand out in how they are always on display thanks to him being a Perpetual Slasher Smiler. And the worst part of all, they're yellow!
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: While he initially stands alongside the Hotel when the Extermination comes and even faces off against Adam directly in the Season 1 Finale, once Adam proves simply too powerful for Alastor to contest the Radio Demon decides to cut and run rather than risk laying down his life. He doesn't show up again until the battle is long over, and even lampshades his unwillingness to die for a cause he's outright admitted to not believing in.
"Great Alastor, altruist, died for his friends",
Sorry to disappoint, that is not where this ends!
  • Secret-Keeper: He's the only one of the protagonists, along with one of the Egg Bois, who knows that Carmilla is the one who killed an Exorcist and caused Adam to cut the extermination period from one year to six months. Subverted later on, as he shares this with Charlie in exchange for helping him with a favor of his choosing down the line, and it eventually becomes common knowledge for the rest of the cast.
  • Sentimental Drunk: If you take Mimzy's word to heart, all it takes is to get a few fingers of rye whiskey in him to turn him into a big softie.
  • Serial Killer: He was a serial killer in life. When he arrived in Hell he acted like one towards Overlords, abducting them and apparently torturing them over the radio.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: He's one killer dresser — emphasis on "killer".
  • Sickly Green Glow: Alastor's magic is primarily defined by an eerie black and green glow.
  • Silly Rabbit, Idealism Is for Kids!: Or just "decent people", at least. He makes it clear that he thinks Hell's citizens are beyond redeeming; he's just along for the ride.
Charlie: So... does that mean you think it's possible to rehabilitate a demon?
Alastor: (laughs heartily) Of course not! That's wacky nonsense! Redemption; Oh, the non-existent humanity! No-no-no-no, I don't think there's anything left that could save such loathsome sinners. The chance given, was the life they lived before, the punishment is THIS! There is no undoing what is done!
  • Sinister Surveillance: Given that he responded to the start of Vox's song in "Radio Killed the Video Star", despite Vox having not broadcast yet, he's implied to be spying on the other Overlord.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: A noticeable inversion. While most of the cast will casually pepper their speech with swears, and even Charlie isn't above a Precision F-Strike or two, Alastor usually keeps his language at a firm PG rating, unless something gets under his skin. In the "A Day in the After Life" comic, a run-in with Vox causes Alastor to let loose an uncharacteristic torrent of swear words.
Alastor: Obnoxious, pompous, piece of shit television. Fucking egotistical waste of space…glamorized, gross, overrated, dumb, annoying, cultish bastard.
    • In the official series, Lucifer dug into his skin so much that he dropped his posh demeanor with a vehement Precision F-Strike. Against the angel Adam, Alastor was actually struggling, leading to another F bomb.
  • Sizeshifter: "Dad Beat Dad" reveals that one of his many abilities is to grow to giant size as he does so to wipe out a group of loan sharks sieging the hotel, even picking one up and popping him into his mouth.
  • Slasher Smile: He always has a psychotic grin on his face. It's terrifying, especially when he takes note of Charlie during “Inside of Every Demon is a Rainbow”.
  • Slavery Is a Special Kind of Evil:
    • While he isn't as directly abusive to Husk as Valentino is to Angel, Episode 5 shows that he can be just as vile, if not more, than Val as he threatens to torture and tear Husk's soul apart if he dares insult him again. Unlike his other displays of violence and intimidation, which is presented as either over-the-top or awe-inspiringly terrifying, Alastor's enslavement and treatment of Husk is played dead seriously.
    • "Dad Beat Dad" reveals that he's on the receiving end of this too. Someone owns his soul and he is not well pleased by this fact. Evident by how he threatened to tear Husk's soul apart if the latter ever mentioned that fact ever again. "The Show Must Go On" shows even more just how pitiful the situation is as he struggles to keep his calm composure and starts looking like someone in genuine distress.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Played with. While he is a massively powerful figure that commands fear all across hell, especially among Sinners that are of lower status than him... this quickly dissipates the closer he gets to his own weight class and beyond. Carmila Carmine seems to treat him with mostly indifference, and the two times we've seen him try to punch above his weight (Lucifer and Adam) he's been treated as something of a non-threat.
  • The Social Expert: Part of what makes Alastor so notorious among Hell's Overlords is not only his unusual physical strength, but his ability to pick up on when someone is hiding something from him, expertly leverage any conversational advantage he has and wield people's negative traits against them to further his own goals.
  • Southern Gentleman: He is from New Orleans, Louisiana and is quite perky and polite, albeit an evil serial killer. He even wears a fashionable suit and offers to make everyone jambalaya. Despite his transatlantic accent almost completely overriding any other accent he may have once had, he can still be heard occasionally placing very mild Southern inflections on certain words (such as rarely adding an "h" to words that begin with a "w").
  • Sophisticated as Hell: "Dad Beat Dad" shows that if you really push him, he's fully capable of dropping his Wicked Cultured act for a moment and being just as foul-mouthed as the other Hotel occupants.
Alastor: You might have heard of me from my radio broadcasts...?
Alastor: Ha ha ha. It was actually my idea.
Lucifer: [laughter] Well it's not very clever!
    Alastor: Ha HA! Fuck you.
  • Squishy Wizard: Alastor is incredibly powerful with his shadow magic, but he is not the most durable fighter. Best shown in his fight with Adam. While he's able to hold his own quite well, one slash to the chest and his cane getting broken is all it takes to send him retreating.
  • Stealth Pun: When Husk wants to speak to him at an inconvenient time, Alastor drops the coy act and replies "What is it?" in a transparently annoyed tone of voice. Later, when he's on the verge of being killed by Adam he remarks, "What just happened?" while being clearly bewildered. Both times he's showing genuine emotion and his voice actually doesn't sound like it's being broadcast over an old-timey radio. He lost his filter.
  • Stepford Smiler: He implicitly admits that he's one outright in the Season 1 finale. Despite being a Perpetual Smiler with a hammy personality who everyone in Hell rightfully fears, he himself fears being seen as inferior. According to Mimzy, he took down other Overlords because he was seen as less by other people, and then broadcasted his victims' screams to everyone around him, notably those who looked down on him before. He also mocks Lucifer, the King of Hell himself, because he's more powerful than him and doesn't show any fear towards him like everyone else. As well as this, despite bonding with Husk's soul and taking pride in verbally abusing him when his Berserk Button is pushed, he himself is incredibly insecure about his own soul being bound with someone else's and being under someone else's control, to the degree he tries to keep this a secret from everyone around him. Husk seemingly knows who Alastor is bound to. If his deal with Charlie is any indication, Alastor's perpetual smiling may be another factor of his own restraint - completely out of his control - that he's managed to accept. When the deal was being set and the magic seal appeared, Alastor's mouth had what appeared to be glowing wires that looked like they would injure him if he were to stop smiling, or at least are what's holding his face in a smile without conscious effort. Curiouser, the magic seal also made what appear to be stitches visible on his left arm.
Alastor: Just because you see a smile, don't think you know what's going on underneath.
  • Suicide is Shameful: He actively tries to discourage people from hanging themselves in "The Family Friendly Noose Song",note  along with explaining other practical uses for a noose rather than killing yourself.
  • Summon Backup Dancers: Alastor conjures up shadow demons as musicians and dancers for his reprise of Charlie's song.
  • Superpower Lottery: He's said to be by far one of the most powerful mortal sinners that Hell has ever seen. He’s outmatched by Hell’s natural born aristocracy, but among sinner demons, only the other Overlords seem to rival him, and even that is in question after his seven-year absence.
  • Terms of Endangerment: As part of his Affably Evil and The Nicknamer habits, he uses affectionate terms for everyone he's met, including people he threatens (he tends to address men as "sir", "my friend" or "my fellow", and women as "dear", "my dear", or "darling").
  • Terrible Artist: His first, not very good, crack at a TV commercial for the Hazbin Hotel includes a pretty bad scribble drawing of the building on a stained piece of cardboard with silly notes around it ("haha I named it", "ship! I guess", "best part" with an arrow pointing to his radio tower, and "no tacky circus decor I promise" which is implied to be an in-universe Take That! at Lucifer).
  • Terrifying Rescuer: In "A Day in the After Life", he saves a sheep demon from a butcher... by transforming into an even more monstrous shape and eating the butcher.
  • Thinking Up Portals: He can easily summon himself or others through portals.
  • Title Drop: Starts saying the name of the show in his Villain Song before being interrupted.
  • Token Evil Teammate: While almost everyone in Hell is an unrepentant bastard, Alastor is among the worst at the hotel: Charlie is genuinely trying to help her people; Vaggie, though skeptical, supports Charlie's decisions and is fiercely protective of her; Angel Dust, for all his faults, willingly volunteered to be redeemed and give the Hotel a shot at gaining traction, even if he plays it off as crashing there rent-free; and Husk and Niffty are there because they were called in as favors and just want to do their jobs. Alastor is the widely-feared tyrant demon who everyone knows not to mess with. Even though he's backing the hotel, he isn't doing it out of altruism. He's just helping the hotel because he thinks it will be funny to watch the demons fail. That being said, he doesn't interfere with the guests or the staff's progress into becoming better people and even offers Mimzy a chance to stay at the hotel to give redemption a chance even if he knows she isn't the type to try it. His status comes back in full force in the Season 1 finale where he cuts a deal with Charlie telling her how to kill Exorcists in exchange of making her indebted to him for a future scheme, makes a comment that he'll be on the winning side if he can guide her, and in the final battle abandons everyone else to their own luck when his life is in danger, with his final scene showing him plotting to free himself from whatever "leash" is holding him and take over Hell.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: While he enjoys meat in general, he's especially fond of venison. Being a deer demon, this highlights the fact that he's a cannibal. "Scrambled Eggs" shows that when he means he eats venison, he means he eats it not cooked but completely raw and freshly slaughtered.
  • Tranquil Fury: In "A Day in the After Life", he calmly voices his displeasure when a butcher attacks a female customer in his shop, then proceeds to brutally slaughter and cannibalize the demon.
  • Transparent Closet: Exaggerated — Alastor is a bit behind the times when it comes to queerness, so he is unaware of his own asexuality, with an official source stating that he views himself as simply "a straight man who hasn't met the right woman yet". In other words the closet is so transparent that Alastor, who is in it, doesn't notice the existence of the closet at all.
Rosie: Come now, Alastor, [Charlie]'s much too young for you! Oh I'm just kiddin', I know you're an ace in the hole!
Alastor: (genuinely confused) A what now?
  • Troll: The more uptight and serious a character, the more likely Alastor is to mock or mess with them. Vaggie and Husk are natural targets for him. He doesn't care about station either, as he's perfectly happy to torment Lucifer himself over Lucifer's insecurities that Charlie might see Alastor as a Parental Substitute.
  • Twofer Token Minority: Asexual and of Creole heritage.
  • The Un-Smile: Dips into this sometimes, such as when Carmilla Carmine brushes of his absence, due to wanting to maintain his smile no matter what he actually feels.
  • Verbal Tic: He has a consistent pattern of introducing himself with the phrase "A pleasure to be meeting you, quite a pleasure".
  • Villainous Breakdown: During his part of Episode 8's final song, despite still retaining his smile, the lyrics and the increasing panic in his voice make it painfully clear his brush with death at Adam's hands has left him completely rattled and more desperate than ever to escape his deal with whoever owns his soul.
  • Villainous Friendship:
    • Implied with him and Niffty, who seems to enjoy his company and doesn't mind being summoned to the hotel out of nowhere. He also acts like he's friends with Husk, though Husk doesn't enjoy his company much. Husk doesn't have a say in the matter, since Alastor owns his soul, and Alastor seems to enjoy needling Husk when he can't fight back.
    • Alastor has a friendly relationship with the Overlord Rosie, as hinted in the prequel comic where he asks a group of women in the Cannibal Colony to say “hi” to her for him. The two chat like old pals in the present, with Rosie even offering him some intel on some territory they could take over together.
    • He and Zestial have a cordial relationship, with Alastor showing him far more respect than he does pretty much anyone else. While Alastor remains coy about his activities, it's in a more playful manner than usual and Zestial clearly expects it of him. Considering Alastor is willing to mock Lucifer over a petty slight, this says a lot about the kind of person Zestial must be.
  • Villainous Valor: Alastor is willing to face down Adam in a fight, even though he's outmatched. Alastor proves to be a more clever fighter than the angel, but Adam's powers far surpass Alastor's, forcing Alastor to retreat when Adam wounds him.
  • Villain Song: A Dark Reprise of Charlie's "Inside of Every Demon is a Rainbow", where Alastor sings about how ridiculous and doomed to failure the venture is, but how he'll go along with it to enjoy the show.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: After watching her disastrous presentation on the news, Alastor becomes very interested in the hotel and comes to Charlie offering to help her get it up and running. Charlie is understandably suspicious of his motivations, since he’s counting on her project failing, but she accepts his aid nonetheless since it's the only support she’s gotten from anyone in Hell. It's implied in "Hello, Rosie!" that Alastor's interest is less in the hotel itself than it is in Charlie specifically, viewing her as a powerful ally he can guide.
  • Villain Teleportation: Shows the ability to teleport himself shortly after he arrives at the Hotel. It seems to have something to do with his power over shadows. He's also able to warp Husk from a poker game into the hotel.
  • Voice of the Legion: His voice grows deeper and the distortion effects on it grow more intense when he responds to Vaggie threatening him.
  • Walking Techbane: Every time he's caught on video, the camera - and seemingly all devices that portray his image - begin to glitch and break down. It's unknown if he's actively doing it as part of his rivalry with Vox, or if it's simply a side effect of his demon form. Given that he initially summoned a vintage camera for Vaggie's advertisements of the Hazbin Hotel, it's likely that it only applies to videos of him, not static pictures.
  • Weak, but Skilled: 'Weak' in comparison to the likes of angels and demon royalty. As a mortal soul, Alastor is by default weaker then the likes of Charlie and Lucifer, but he's gained a decent amount of power for a sinner demon, even by Overlord standards, and is an intelligent fighter who knows how to utilize his abilities cleverly. This method of fighting even allows him to briefly keep up with Adam, who has raw power greater than any sinner demon including the Overlords but settles for just throwing that power around, but he still ends up badly injured by just one of Adam's successful hits and needs to run for it. This is also subverted as he reveals in the final song that his deal is actually holding back his true power.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: His microphone, as shown when Adam splits it and all of Alastor's tendrils and minions instantly disappear. It doesn't entirely negate his powers, as he still slips away into shadows, but it clearly serves as a focus for his more impressive feats.
  • Wendigo: Alastor clearly draws inspiration from many Wendigo-related motifs (deers, cannibalism, etc.), especially how he grows in size and becomes a spindly abomination in his more powerful form, reminiscient of the Ojibwe descriptions of how Wendigos grow bigger and taller the more human flesh they consume but are never sated by it.
  • We Used to Be Friends: An old friend of his, Mimzy, briefly takes refuge in the Hotel. Mimzy is not so much a "friend" as a reckless cowardly leech who hides behind Alastor's fearsome nature whenever she makes enemies or bad deals. While Alastor was fine with this before as it indulged his psychotic impulses, when she thoughtlessly endangers the hotel due to bringing forth murderous mobsters she stole money from, Alastor amicably but firmly tells her to leave, as her antics endanger his project and co-workers.
Alastor: You are welcome if you actually want to give redemption a shot, but I think we both know that's not really your style, so you need to leave.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Alastor's killing the boar demon in defense of a female sheep demon is this, as twisted as this sounds. By all accounts, he has nothing to gain from intervening, and he doesn't broadcast the kill. There’s an implication that while Alastor is an unrepentant bastard, he does have something resembling good still left in him...and would prefer that no one finds this out.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: According to Viv during a livestream, he hates dogs, because they played a significant role in his death. It's fitting with his deer theme, as dogs are used to hunt deer.
  • Wild Card: Alastor acts for his own amusement, not caring for territory or domination of others. This makes pinning down his motives quite difficult, as Alastor is at the same time incredibly calculating and yet utterly random. Zestial lampshades this trait when speaking to him, which Alastor takes as a compliment.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: While he's a believer in Corporal Punishment for misbehaving kids and willing to dish it out himself, he'll never kill or injure one. invokedWord of God states that, if in a position similar to Pennywise from IT, he wouldn't eat children, but he would scare them enough to scar them mentally. He's not above laughing at their misery, however, as seen by his comments about the Stock Market Crash of 1929 ("...So many orphans!").
  • Xanatos Gambit: Why he's helping with the hotel, since any outcome gives him what he wants - a method to relieve his boredom. It fails miserably? He gets to point and laugh at everyone's failures to redeem themselves. It actually succeeds? The status quo has been massively upset, which would cause massive chaos and, in turn, give Alastor a front row seat to everything that would come from that.
  • You Are What You Hate: His dislike of Vox could be rooted in this as both of them are powerful media based overlords of hell in well dressed suits, and as implied by his inferiority superiority complex, Alastor might dislike Vox as he sees in him all of his qualities negatively reflected back at him.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: Allegedly owns hundreds of souls if what the other Overlords say about themselves as a whole is true. At the very least, he owns Husk's soul, and seemingly also owns whatever souls Husk still had in his possession when Husk got desperate enough to deal with him in the first place. He summons several individually distinct minions at several points too and Niffty was called in by him as well, but it's not stated if he owns their souls or not.
