Also, as with the main page, all spoilers are unmarked. Beware!
Makoto Naegi
Super Duper High School Good Luck/Average Joe/Screams-Like-A-Bitch
An Ordinary High-School Student who was accepted to the extraordinary Hope's Peak Academy, only to find himself locked in a killing game with 14 other students. Now, with the threat of murder all around him, he must solve the mystery of each chapter and get out unharmed - though, given how his classmates act, this might be harder than he expected.
Tropes associated with Naegi:
- Agent Mulder: While he's generally one of the saner students, he has a tendency to comically overreact to things. Even when he discovers Maizono's body, he ends up screaming for several minutes, according to the other students.
- Catchphrase:
- Tends to begin his internal dialogue with "At this time, I realized..."
- "You've got that wrong!" in Class Trials. Once used "Sore wa chigau yo!" when caught up in Maizono's gratuitous Japanese.
- Subverted Catchphrase: When Oowada admits to knowing Togami's browsing history, something he shouldn't be able to know, Naegi yells "You've got that...right?!"
- Comical Overreacting: The "Meet the Students" special states that the only reason he's in the show is because of this. It's in his title, after all.
- Covert Pervert: His internet browsing history Monokuma used as blackmail mostly consisted of trying to find naked pictures of Maizono.
- Chivalrous Pervert: He never tried anything funny with Maizono while she was alive and freaked out over the idea of naked pictures of her being made public. He did accept the pictures of her, though.
- Deadpan Snarker: He often assumes this role when the other students start acting stupid. He especially does this with Togami, either bluntly refusing his order or sarcastically going along with them.
- Fetish: Heavily implied to have one for girls with noodle cups on their head, if his browser history in episode 4 is anything to go by. May have been a Call-Forward to Kirigiri (his Implied Love Interest in the actual canon) having a noodle cup on her head in one episode.
- Giving Up on Logic: Appears to go through this in episode 5. It's hard to blame him, considering the insanity he goes through.Naegi: Yeah, sure. As if anything else had to make sense today.
- Nice Guy: Shown by how he actually is willing to put up with some of the others, and calls some of the people out on their more callous behavior.
- Not So Above It All:
- While he's generally one of the saner students, he has a tendency to comically overreact to things.
- He has no problem suspecting Celes is an actual demon, despite having no previous experience with them. Then again, she wasn't exactly hiding it.
- Only Sane Man: After Kirigiri, he's the most sound-minded of the students. Among other things, he realizes that murdering others is only playing into Monokuma's paws, and he leads the trials alongside Kirigiri.
- Rousing Speech: In the middle of the third trial, Naegi gives one in order to encourage his classmates to work together as friends so they can overcome Monokuma's despair inducing influence.
- Screams Like a Little Girl: It's in his title for a reason. Maizono's death is a good example of this.
- Sweet on Polly Oliver: Gender-inverted - he is certain that he won't regret having the hots for Chihiro.
- Took a Level in Badass: When it comes to the Class Trials, Naegi goes from pretty incompetent (First Trial) to being able to somewhat hold his own but need Kirigiri to help (Second Trial) to handling the whole trial on his own and exposing the culprit (Third Trial) singlehandedly. He also stands up to Byakuya in the Second Trial, despite being more of a pushover before.
- Took A Level In Cynicism: Compare the tone of Naegi's first line in the series (hope and a bit of excitement) to his lines by DRAT to the Future (dry sarcasm and unenthusiastic).
Kiyotaka Ishimaru
Super Duper High School Hardass
A stickler for the rules (to the point where he's practically sticky), Ishimaru is a morally-focused young man who is good at deciding what is and is not acceptable in a school environment... and not much else. He later develops an intense friendship with Oowada (which is heavily implied to have gone even further than that) that leads to tragedy when the latter is found guilty and executed.
Tropes associated with Ishimaru:
- Ambiguously Gay: Starts getting rather obvious with Oowada in episode 4. Not only do they really not care how homoerotic their spa contest looks, but they get very physically affectionate with one another as well.
- Badass Boast: Declaring that his balls are made out of brass, and forged in the line of duty as hall monitor.
- Blunt "Yes": Two in rapid succession in Episode 4.Oowada: Man, you must have some big balls to try telling me what to do, bitch!Ishimaru: Precisely! I have brass balls, forged in the line of duty as hall monitor!Oowada: All right, bro, then let's see those balls! It's time for a bro-off! (they head to the sauna)Naegi: You guys are aware of how this looks, right?Ishimaru: Absolutely! And we care not for appearances!
- Fetish: Episode 3 reveals that he has one for debates.
- Hypocritical Humor: Telling Oowada, "You could stand to control your voluuuuume!"
- Laser-Guided Amnesia: Played for Laughs when he attempts to use his Forget Beam (particularly after a noticeably homoerotic encounter with Oowada).
- Mad Libs Catchphrase: "X is not welcome in a school environment!" (Or, in episode 3, "This debate was very much welcome in my pants environment.")
- Gets a bit more variation in "The Pursuit of Happiness" with "This is not welcome in a ship environment" and "Your social life is not welcome in this moon environment."
- No Indoor Voice: Which is why he doesn't have much of a leg to stand on to criticize Oowada for being loud.
- No Social Skills: Lampshaded in the Meet the Students video. An extra on Faulerro's Tumblr shows 'HOW DO I MAKE FRIENDS' in his Google search history.
- Obstructive Bureaucrat: Downplayed. He continuously tries to enforce the rules of a "school environment", despite the fact that he's nowhere close to having any authority. Nor is the killing game the time or place to get into those things.
Byakuya Togami
Super Duper High School Prick
The son of the owner of a wealthy corporation, Togami's immense wealth is overshadowed by the fact that he is a gigantic prick. He's detached from the other students and treats every single one with contempt (except Celes). Episode 4 reveals that he searches for murder mystery porn in his spare time, which contributes to his tampering with the crime scene.
Tropes associated with Togami:
- Blunt "Yes": After it turns out that he's been stringing everyone along by altering the crime scene of the second murder to make Genocider Syo look like the suspect.Oowada: Man, you're a prick!Togami: And your point is?
- Breaking the Fourth Wall: While investigating Fujisaki's corpse, he tells Naegi to "throw bits of evidence at the screen with no real explanation," prompting Naegi to ask if he's OK.
- Catchphrase: "Oh, yes" and, starting in episode 4, "Tell them, Naegi".
- Character Blog: Here, as seen in episode 4.
- Fetish: Apparently, murder mysteries. He loves making things harder for everyone else in the name of this.
- It's All About Me: He is a very self-centered snob. He frequently declares the trials to be a game, intentionally makes them harder for fun, and tries to screw over everyone else (in spite of the fact that getting the culprit wrong will also get him killed).
- Jerkass: It's in his title. He even smugly responds to Oowada calling him "a prick," by saying "And your point is?"
- Jerkass Has a Point: Hagakure calls him "an asshole with a point" after Togami says that the mastermind has a traitor among them and sees Alter Ego as "an unfair advantage" against him, which is why it was stolen. Then again, he is most likely wrong about said traitor stealing Alter Ego in this abridged series.
- Lack of Empathy: He shows no sorrow over the murder victims. Even considering Maizono is The Friend Nobody Likes, he's the most open in rejoicing over her death, and he fairly callously says "Enough of this mourning bollocks, let's get straight to the investigation," when investigating Fujisaki's corpse. After running around chasing the alleged creeper in Episode 5, his reaction to Yamada screaming sells it.Togami: [exasperated] This had better be a bloody corpse this time.
- Mad Libs Catchphrase: "You have [verb]ed the esteemed [noun] of Byakuya Togami!"
- They Call Me MISTER Tibbs!: On his Tumblr account, he demands to be referred to as "The Esteemed Lord Togami."
- Troll: Another reason for his crime scene tampering, as deduced by Kirigiri.
- Upper-Class Twit: So high and mighty that he pretty much considers Naegi to be his slave. Apparently, he doesn't even know how to use a computer; the one time he tries, he taps the same key on a keyboard over and over, expecting that it's going to do something.
Mondo Oowada
Super Duper High School Needless Violence
The head of a famous Japanese biker gang, whose title befits his Hair-Trigger Temper. Episode 4 reveals that he's secretly a furry, and after Chihiro meets with him and tries to console him about it he snaps and kills him in a fit of rage, and ends up turned into butter in his execution. Don't question it.
Tropes associated with Oowada:
- Accidental Murder: He kills Chihiro when he loses his temper. In the past, he also accidentally killed his brother, by yiffing. Somehow.
- Ambiguously Gay: With Ishimaru.
- Anime Hair: Lampshaded by Greg in the "Meet the Students" special.
- Blunt "Yes": When Ishimaru confronts him about how he's acting like a murderer, he says he "kinda did it".
- Cruel and Unusual Death: He gets turned into butter. Somehow.
- Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: In canon, he only threatens Monokuma once before the bear detonates and issues it as his only warning. In here, he manages to attack and blow up the teddy at least sixteen times and was never punished for it.
- Digging Yourself Deeper: After Naegi catches him on his first I Never Said It Was Poison Moment, he says "I don't know anything! I don't even know how you search for pictures of that dead chick all the time."
- Furry Fandom: Secretly a member of it, which is what drove him to kill Fujisaki.
- Hair-Trigger Temper: It's his talent after all.
- I Never Said It Was Poison: Lets slip the fact that he knows Togami's browsing history while trying to suggest that Togami killed Fujisaki to avoid having it get out.
- Insistent Terminology: His hair resembles a baguette, not a corncob.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Not a bad guy once you get to know him.
- No Indoor Voice: Like Ishimaru.
Leon Kuwata
Super Duper High School Jock
A star baseball player whose excellence at sports excuses him from being a complete idiot otherwise. He ends up being the first murderer, being executed by Monokuma with a thousand baseballs.
Tropes associated with Kuwata:
- Adaptational Villainy: In the game, he killed Maizono in what was arguably a case of self-defense, although the fact that he went back to get his toolbox and open her door throws that into question. In DRAT, he kills her for calling him a "weenie."
- Butt-Monkey: His lines repeatedly get cut off by other characters, he gets called a weenie by the girl he tries to get with, and nobody is interested enough in his character's Hidden Depths.
- Casanova Wannabe: As he confesses in a Motive Rant. He "hadn't gotten any in forever," and thought he had a chance with Maizono. But her rejecting him and calling him a weenie drove him into a rage.
- Curse Cut Short: When he's locked in the batting cage about to be pelted to death with baseballs, he says "You son of a-!" before they start shooting at him.
- Disproportionate Retribution: Kills Maizono for calling him a "weenie."
- Dumb Jock: As Naegi points out concerning his attempts to cover up his crime. He also uses his talent with baseball to get away with being a complete idiot outside of the sport.
- Hidden Depths: Defied. He tries to invoke this as an excuse for why he shouldn't be executed. Monokuma flat out tells him that no one cares.
- Implausible Deniability : Claims his first name is not Leon, despite wearing a name tag that shows his name is Leon.
- I Think You Broke Him: After Naegi accuses him of murdering Maizono and he enters his Madness Mantra.Byakuya: What is he even saying?Celestia: I think he is broken.
- Madness Mantra: During his Villainous Breakdown, he starts repeatedly calling Naegi an asshole. This eventually devolves into "AHO-AHO-AHO-AHO-AHO!" which Naegi compares to quacking.
- Nobody Calls Me "Chicken"!: Maizono called him a "weenie", which enraged him enough to kill her.
- Too Dumb to Live: Naegi remarks that only he would be stupid enough to fail to cover up the murder the way he did, failing to notice Maizono's Dying Clue or the piece of his shirt falling out of the incinerator.
- When All You Have Is a Hammer…: It's pointed that "throwing a round object at something" (more specifically, throwing his shirt into the incinerator and throwing Hagakure's crystal ball at the "on" button) was the only way he could dispose of the evidence.
- You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Utters this when he finds out what his punishment is going to be.
Hifumi Yamada
Super Duper High School Dork Supreme
Perhaps the biggest nerd in the entire country, who won't give the time of day to anyone who doesn't know about comics, cartoons, video games, sci-fi series, or other things of that nature. He's also an amateur pornographer (though he prefers "artist").
Tropes associated with Yamada:
- Adaptational Villainy: In the game, Celes claims Ishimaru attacked her and stole Alter Ego, to which he responds with This Is Unforgivable! Here, she claims Ishimaru supports women's rights and fair criticism of video games, and he doesn't even notice when she tosses in Alter Ego on the side.
- Fat Comic Relief: Referenced by Asahina upon discovering his body the first time.Asahina: Not the fat guy! He was funny, because of his weight...
- His Name Is...: He dies midsentence, only managing to tell the gang that his murderer is "the Bum...", getting Hagakure framed. In the trial, Naegi realizes that he was actually trying to say 'Thebumphor'.
- Insistent Terminology: Regarding Alter Ego.Kirigiri: Apparently Yamada mistook Alter Ego for an advanced porn game.Yamada: The correct term is eroge!
- It's Not Porn, It's Art: What he considers his... passion.
- Otaku: Same.
- Out of Focus: He doesn't get very many lines in episodes 2, 3, or 4.
- A Death in the Limelight: He gets more focus in Episode 5, and dies at the end of the episode.
- Phrase Catcher: "Yamada, no." Said by Naegi whenever his mind goes in the gutter, and gets used as an Ironic Echo when he turns up dead.
Yasuhiro Hagakure
Super Duper High School Bum
A man who is way too old to even be in high school, but was admitted to Hope's Peak primarily on how hilarious his tendency to bum off other people was.
Tropes associated with Hagakure:
- Anime Hair: An afro-like... thing.
- Butt-Monkey: Gets repeatedly "penalized" by Monokuma in episode 3 (which returns in a brief scene at the end of episode 4). The third time he gets penalized in Episode 3 is for something Oowada did.
- Comically Small Bribe: He admits that he would kill for a popsicle when Monokuma declares that it'll be the fourth motive.
- The Ditz: His talent is being a bum. Do the math.
- This is used in his defense in Episode 6 where Naegi points out that Hagakure is too incompetent to pull off such an elaborate murder.
Hagakure: "It's true, I'm useless!" - Eye Scream: Both his eyes are hit with darts as a penalty by Monokuma.
- Fortune Teller: His future seeing abilities are heavily downplayed in favor of showing his bum side.
- Frame-Up: Gets framed by the third culprit and by Yamada's dying words, but Naegi sets everyone straight by pointing out how he can't even button his shirt right.
- Groin Attack: After the above two incidents, Monokuma's third dart lands straight in his crotch instead.
- I Always Wanted to Say That: His reason for yelling "OBJECTION!", which gets him a dart in the eye from Monokuma.
- Lazy Bum: It's his title and his first scene involves him asking Naegi for money.
- Third Eye: Episode 4 has this part of him getting hit by a pair of Genoscissors.
Sayaka Maizono
Super Duper High School B-List Celebrity
A member of the somewhat popular idol group "The Kawaii Choir", whose grating use of weeaboo speak annoys everyone who listens to her (except Naegi). Leon has a crush on her, and when she rejects him and calls him a weenie he stabs her with a knife, marking the first murder of the series.
Tropes associated with Maizono:
- Ambiguously Bi: She's sweet on Naegi (until given motive to backstab him) and also claims to have had a drunken orgy with the rest of the Kawaii Choir.
- Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Was planning to murder someone and frame Naegi for it.
- Catchphrase: "Sumi ma-sen!", delivered in much the same way one would say "Ex-cuuuse ME!" and no actual Japanese person would ever use that expression.
- The Friend Nobody Likes: Everyone except Naegi can't stand being around her, finding her constant anime references and Japanese fangirl tendencies annoying. As such, they're all very pleased once she kicks the bucket. Naegi even uses this fact in his defense during the first trial; since he was the only person who could stand to be around Maizono for more than ten seconds, he couldn't have been the one to kill her.Naegi: Look, how could I kill Maizono? I'm the only one amongst us who could tolerate her!
- Gratuitous Japanese: She uses it constantly, even though she is already Japanese.
- Occidental Otaku: She's a parody of this kind of character. She constantly inserts Japanese words into her speech (like saying "sumi masen" instead of "excuse me"), refers to herself as a "kawaii princessu", and generally acts like anime is the greatest thing in the world, much to everyone's annoyance.
- Old Shame: In-Universe. Monokuma's first motive is of pictures of Maizono without her idol clothes. Her reaction afterwards shows that she regretted taking them (though to be fair, she has every reason to given the way the Japanese idol industry works).
- Third-Person Person: As if her speaking style wasn't annoying and cutesy enough, she refers to herself only by her last name.
- Too Dumb to Live: The person she tries to murder is a jock several times stronger than her.
Kyouko Kirigiri
Super Duper High School Mystery Chick
An Emotionless Girl who solves the murder mystery plots much more efficiently than everyone else (save for perhaps Naegi and even more questionably Togami). Though her voice is stoic, she frequently expresses her disapproval of the other students' idiocy.
Tropes associated with Kirigiri:
- Agent Scully: Is unable to solve the last bit of the third trial because "it doesn't make any sense."
- Ambiguously Bi: After noticing that Monokuma offered every student naked pictures of Maizono, she admits to being curious, and also takes offense to Makoto unintentionally implying she isn't pretty.
- Brutal Honesty: When Alter Ego asks about what happened to Chihiro, she types, "Oowada crushed their head."
- Catchphrase: "If I have to guess..." and "Ah. My suspicions are confirmed."
- Daddy Issues: Her relationship with her father is just as bad as in canon. This is evident by Jin's search history.
- Deadpan Snarker: Practically every line she has involves her snarking at something.Kirigiri: Yes, it's hard to believe pressing the same button over and over isn't yielding any results.
- Emotionless Girl: She isn't the Mystery Chick for nothing. Her introduction in the "Meet the Students" special says it all:Monokuma: Mention the fact that she's emotionless as crap!
- Expy: As the episodes progress, it becomes less difficult to imagine her most of her lines being said by Daria.
- "Not So Different" Remark: Celestia claims that Kirigiri alone shares her cynicism and indifference to her classmates. Kirigiri is less than thrilled.
- Only Sane Woman: 24/7, especially considering that she seems to be the only one who does actual investigation work. If it wasn't for her, everyone but the culprit would have died during Maizono's trial.
- Sophisticated as Hell: "Let's show these dense motherfuckers some logic, shall we?"
- The Stoic: Even the occasional moments where she's clearly feeling some emotion don't have her raising her voice beyond the usual monotone.
Aoi Asahina
Super Duper High School Donut Nut
An avid swimmer whose main claim to fame is her love of donuts - it's believed that she will die if she doesn't consume them enough.
Tropes associated with Asahina:
- Adaptational Dumbass: In the game, while she still had her scatterbrained moments, Asahina was still one of the more sensible students at the academy overall. This series ramps up the airheaded side of her character significantly, to the point where she barely understands what's going on if it doesn't involve food.
- Catchphrase: From episode 5 onwards, she says different variations of "Holy Donut Holes"!
- Deadpan Snarker: Despite being The Ditz, she actually gets a few moments of this. Particularly this line:Asahina: After all the junk swinging between those guys, I'd actually welcome amnesia.
- The Ditz: Her head is as empty as the hole in one of her donuts.
- Flat Character: Lampshaded:Asahina: I like sports, and donuts, aaaaaaaand...that's it!Naegi: Well, you're well-rounded, aren't you?
Asahina: Like a donut?! - Nice Girl: After Naegi, she's the quickest to empathize and generally sees the best in everyone.
- No One Should Survive That!: The amount of donuts she eats is greater than what a common person should normally eat. Monokuma even expresses surprise that she's still kicking during the Future Foundation killing game orientation.
- Shipper on Deck: Supports Celes/Togami, much to Fukawa's displeasure.
- Trademark Favorite Food: Take a wild guess.
Touko Fukawa
Super Duper High School Shut-In
A reclusive author whose romantic novel Moist Dreams in Malaysia made her famous. Despite her success as a writer, her true passion is her social justice blog, where she vents her frustrations on all those who displease her: people. She especially dislikes cis white males like Naegi (despite everyone being Japanese).
Tropes associated with Fukawa:
- All Love Is Unrequited: Her crush on Togami is both hopeless and ironic, since she Does Not Like Men.
- Character Blog: The URL is briefly seen in episode 4 - see it here.
- Does Not Like Men: While Fukawa hates everybody, she hates a special distaste for men. In the first class trial, Fukawa believes that the killer has to be one of the men because "only men are capable of something so horrible", and refers to Naegi as "cis white male scum" despite the fact that he's Japanese.
- Flat Character: There isn't much to her outside of her hate for others (especially men) and Tumblr habits.
- Misanthrope Supreme: The thing she hates the most is people. She hates social interaction, and has "half a mind to blog about" everybody else.
- Political Overcorrectness: A big advocate of this, as her character is a satire of social justice warriors.
- Split Personality: Genocider Syo. However, in this version, Syo has a Cockney accent.
- Straw Feminist: She will blame anything and everything negative on men, regardless of how impossible it may be or how little sense it makes. She also calls Naegi "cis white male scum" when she suspects him of killing Maizono; when Naegi points out that he's Japanese (and therefore not white), Fukawa gets mad at him for derailing her argument.
- Verbal Tic: She has a noticable stutter, which becomes more pronounced when she's flustered.
Sakura Oogami
Super Duper High School Beefcake
A very strong girl who "wouldn't look out of place in a Street Fighter game" and is very, very muscular and intimidating.
Tropes associated with Oogami:
- Blood Knight : See Proud Warrior Race Girl below.
- Dumb Muscle: When she thinks that Alter Ego is Fujisaki trapped in a computer.
- Horrifying the Horror: Monokuma finds her terrifying, which says quite a lot about her.
- Lady Looks Like a Dude: Lampshaded several times. The very first bit of her introduction in the "Meet the Students" special has Greg simply stating that she's a woman.
- Proud Warrior Race Girl: As Greg's statement about her in the "Meet the Students" special clearly shows, she is obsessed with the honor of the battlefield and respects only those she estimates to be, in her own words, "followers of the warrior's way". The only people she dubbed as such so far are Oowada and, strangely enough, Naegi.
Celestia Ludenberg, a.k.a. Grand Spite Demon Thebumphor
Super Duper High School Hellspawn /Super Duper Hell School Actual Demon
A gambler who is believed to have come from Hell itself, a theory which holds more weight due to her frequent outburts of demonic rage.
Tropes associated with Celes:
- Audience Surrogate: To Danganronpa's detractors, given her speech in Episode 6.
- Birds of a Feather: She gets along greatly with Togami given their sophisticated backgrounds, their superiority over others and their mutual enjoyment of the killing game. Although in Episode 6 she admits that she was stroking his ego so he could make the investigations harder for everyone.
- Compelling Voice: Makoto questions why the strawberries in the Danganronpa universe are all pink. Celestia eventually gets fed up with Makoto's stalling and screams "YOU WILL EAT THE STRAWBERRY, CREATURE OF FLESH!" at him, which makes Makoto eat it.
- Dragged Off to Hell: And is perfectly fine with that; she's not only from Hell, but she found her other classmates so annoying that Hell is preferable to being around them anymore..
- Even Evil Has Standards: Despises Monokuma's voice from the game's dub. Also, she finds The Legions of Hell less insufferable than her classmates.
- Evil Sounds Deep: In "Hellspawn" mode, her voice gets very deep and has a slight reverb to it.
- Face Death with Dignity: She's not upset about dying since that just means she's going home, and getting away from her classmates.
- Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: Her Elegant Gothic Lolita appearance and manner contrast greatly with her bouts of demonic rage.
- Lipstick Lesbian: She has a thing for Kirigiri and promises to "show her a good time" if she wants when she goes to Hell.
- Literal Metaphor: She's the Super Duper High School Hellspawn not because of her personality, but because she was literally spawned in Hell.
- Nightmare Fetishist: A fan of Genocider Syo. Given that she's from Hell, this comes as little surprise.
- Obviously Evil: Her title is an obvious indicator, for one. She also talks about people burning in "the pits of my home", and when she's outed as the murderer in Case 3, she doesn't really mind, since she'll just be going back home without any trouble.
- Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: She starts doing this in the fifth episode, sometimes taken on a Southern accent.
- She also does this in the sixth episode in a poor attempt to throw Naegi off his game.
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Gives one before she's killed about how Asahina is nothing but a donut obsessed idiot and that she looks forward to Asahina having diabetes, Ishimaru was just a catchphrase spewer and how the only person she actually didn't hate was Kirigiri.
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here: She's thrilled at her execution since she can finally get away from her annoying classmates.
- See You in Hell: A quite literal example since she's a demon. She assures Kirigiri that she'll be ending up in hell.
- Voice of the Legion: In her scarier moments. Turns out to be part of her being an actual hellspawn.
- Xanatos Gambit: If she got away with murdering Yamada and Ishimaru, Monokuma would off her annoying classmates. If she was caught, she'd get a return trip to hell. Either way, she'd get what she wanted.
Junko Enoshima (actually Mukuro Ikusaba)
Super Duper High School Airhead
A very attractive girl who (put frankly) isn't very smart and has very little personality. She's also a bit of a jerkass. Because of this, she gets personally killed by Monokuma early on. She reappears in "The End of Hope's Peak", not yet disguised as Junko.
Tropes associated with fake Enoshima:
- Brainless Beauty: Lampshaded in her intro and is also her talent.
- The Cameo: In Soul Whatever: "Third Earth", she's one of the dead souls crashing into the afterlife.
- Jerkass: What little personality she has makes her this.
- Like Is, Like, a Comma: Just look at the quote above. At one point, she even uses "like" at the end of a sentence, when there's nothing else to say.
- Soundtrack Dissonance: Real Junko has her sing "Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head" as they watch the student council kill each other.
- Tempting Fate: Her death comes because she calls Monokuma a "lame stuffed toy."
- Too Dumb to Live: Provokes Monokuma in spite of Sakura's warnings.
- Valley Girl: For one, she often calls things "lame".
Chihiro Fujisaki
Super Duper High School Totally-A-Chick
A timid young student who spends most of his time on the computer. Even before "her" death at the hands of Oowada, many jokes are made about both his real gender and the Tumblr users who get upset over others interpreting him as cis instead of transgender.
Tropes associated with Fujisaki:
- Ambiguous Gender Identity: After The Reveal, no further effort is made to clarify what Fujisaki's gender identity is. Kirigiri only states that they were assigned male at birth before Monokuma declares that they "never talk about this again", and Fujisaki is refered to thereafter with they/them pronouns.note
- Attractive Bent-Gender: During Fujisaki's introduction, Naegi notes that Fujisaki is "adorable", and adds that "wanting to hit that was both totally acceptable and something [he'd] never regret". This is despite Fujisaki being male (or at least assigned male at birth).
- Character Exaggeration: Their gender identity is given much more focus than their programming skills.
- Crossdressing Voices: Zigzagged. Fujisaki is voiced by MasakoX, who is male. Fujisaki themself presents as female, but was assigned male at birth, and has an Ambiguous Gender Identity after The Reveal of this fact. So it's unclear how this trope is played relating to their voice actor.
- Dude Looks Like a Lady: Their talent lampshades this, as the "Super Duper High School Totally-A-Chick".
- Horrible Judge of Character: Chihiro sought out the needlessly violent Mondo in the hopes of getting his help in revealing everyone's secrets. Mondo even laments that this was a poor decision on their part.
- Nice Guy: One of the kindest classmates. They never raise their voice, and their Establishing Character Moment has them start speaking with "Not to be a bother..."
- Not So Above It All: Generally sweet and reasonable in life, but posthumously it turns out they hard-coded Alter Ego to speak Gratuitous Japanese just to be annoying.
- Suspiciously Specific Denial: Before the big reveal, much is made of "her" being considered a girl.
- Unsettling Gender-Reveal: After their death, Kirigiri very quickly reveals that Fujisaki was assigned male at birth, though she admits that she can't say one way or another what their gender identity actually is.
Junko Enoshima (the real one)
The spreader of despair.
Tropes associated with real Enoshima
- Big Bad: Of the entire series.
- Giggling Villain: Her only lines as of writing this are just her giggling.
- The Peeping Tom: She happens to be quite fond of spying on people while they're in the shower, regardless of gender. She'll then use Monokuma to announce that she's watching them, because it's not like they can do anything about it.
- Sibling Murder: Executes Mukuro on a whim, showing the other students that Monokuma is Not So Harmless.
- The Woman Behind the Teddy Bear: She controls Monokuma from a safe location.
Monokuma
Totes Sinister Bear-in-Command
