    Momo Ayase

Momo Ayase

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/momo_ayase.png

Voiced by: Shion Wakayama
A high school girl who believes in ghosts from living with her grandma, a famous psychic. After being abducted by aliens, her chakras unlock and she gains telekinetic powers.
  • Action Girl: She's capable of holding her own in hand-to-hand combat even without her powers.
  • Archenemy:
    • After successfully thwarting her the first time through trickery, Momo becomes this to Reiko Kashima, aka, the Slit-Mouthed Woman, who places a curse on Momo that ensures she will follow her to hunt her down and kill her once Momo lets her guard down. They make peace (sort of) after Reiko sees how dedicated Momo and Okarun are to one another, reminding Reiko of her own love life back when she was still human.
    • She is also one to the Kito Family matriarch, Naki Kito, after Momo defeats and kills the Mongolian Death Worm the Kito Family raised and were worshipping, contributing to the family's downfall. Though Okarun, Jiji, and Evil Eye were also involved, Naki homes in on Momo in particular and swears revenge on her.
  • Berserker Tears: Momo is livid after learning of the suffering Vamola went through at the hands of the Space Globalists, crying tears of sheer rage.
  • Black Magician Girl: During the RPG arc, Momo is classed as a mage.
  • Childhood Friends: She and Jiji go way back as children. Despite Momo's constant annoyance over Jiji's hyperactive behavior and his tendency to tease her, it's clear that the two are very close and dear to each other, to the point that Okarun becomes insecure over their closeness.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She becomes very insecure about Shiratori's obvious crush on Okarun and the possibility of him reciprocating. She also outright dropkicks Vamola when she walks in on her kissing Okarun.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Momo's main weapons in fights are her smarts and tendency to think outside the box. Most of the heroes' victories in the manga can be attributed to Momo's ability to think fast and creatively on the fly with her psychic powers. One of her favorite tactics is provoking enemies into recklessly attacking her, causing them to play right into her hands until it's too late.
  • Converted Fangirl: Downplayed. She finds herself suddenly interested in aliens after defeating Turbo Granny, though it's more likely that she just wants to talk to Okarun.
  • Dude Magnet: Okarun, Jiji, and Kinta are all smitten with her and a lot of boys in Momo's school have expressed attraction to her as well.
  • Establishing Character Moment: After a bad breakup, Momo still takes the time to put herself between Okarun and some bullies to protect him. She then goes back to griping about her ex as if nothing happened, showing that she's selfless and a Nice Girl at heart.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: With Vamola. They definitely start off on the wrong foot, with their first interaction being Momo drop-kicking Vamola after seeing her kiss Okarun. By the end of the Space Globalists arc, however, the two of them have practically become sisters.
  • Good Is Not Nice: She's crass and quick to resort to violence upon the smallest of triggers but is unquestionably heroic and selfless. Despite not being a conventional "good girl", her heart is always in the right place when it matters.
  • Has a Type: She has a crush on the actor Ken Takakura and tends to date people with similar facial features or personalities despite of the fact that this doesn't make them good "boyfriend" material. She doesn't want to admit that Okarun is right up her alley as well, as he contrasts with everything she thinks of as a "Ken Takakura", that is, despite the possibility that she may like Okarun more than what her perceived preferences are.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Her "Moe Moe Tri-Beam" is an energized psychic blast that she can use whenever she forms a heart sign with both of her hands.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She can be a violent and uncouth punk around others, but is a caring and selfless girl deep down.
  • Last-Name Basis: Okarun alternates between this and First-Name Basis with her depending on whether he's transformed. Normally, Okarun refers to her as "Miss Ayase"/"Ayase-san", but when he's transformed, he refers to her as "Momo-chan".
  • Love Interest: To Okarun, considering that regardless of any love progression, they are markedly dear to each other.
  • Made of Iron: Momo has an insane amount of durability given the amount of times she's more than survived several beatings from supernatural entities that would normally kill a regular human. She manages to tank the Flatwoods Monster's punches even after it literally beats her into a wall until a gigantic hole is formed, and still manages to utter a defiant "Fuck you" to an enraged Acrobatic Silky after it swings her around like a ragdoll against walls while literally choking the life out of her with her hair. This is impressive given that unlike her friends, she isn't empowered by any supernatural entity at all, even with her psychic powers into account.
  • Mind over Matter: Momo's psychic ability manifests as a giant hand of faintly glowing energy, which she can use to make things levitate by interacting with their "soul".
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After the Globalists reveal a connection to Vamola, Momo beats up Vamola and drives her off, accusing the girl of working for alien invaders that put Okarun in a coma. Following the multi-chapter flashback transmitting Vamola's history to the gang, where her entire civilization was enslaved, destroyed, and...processed by those same invaders, Momo vows to kill the Globalists in the most brutal way possible to gain vengeance for the Sumerians and Vamola.
  • Only Sane Man: Relatively speaking. Between Okarun's fanboyish obsession with the paranormal, Shiratori's Chuunibyou antics, and Jin being a complete airhead, it's normally up to Momo to keep everybody on track.
  • Psychometry: She can see an entity's past whenever she touches their auras with her psychic powers.
  • Raised by Grandparents: Was raised by her single grandmother.
  • Remote, Yet Vulnerable: One downside to her telekenetic ability is that if her psychic projection, which manifests as one or two invisible giant hands, gets damaged by an opponent that's strong enough to break free from it, the damage reflects itself back to her actual, physical hands, injuring her. One other weakness is that if Momo's physical hands are literally tied, she'd have much more difficulty controlling her psychic hands when in a bind.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Momo starts liking Okarun because he is a gentleman towards her and is very outspoken as to how much he appreciates her friendship.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Momo can't help but express sympathy towards certain entities despite their attempts to kill her and her friends previously, especially whenever she taps into her psychometric powers and gets a glimpse into what made these beings hostile and malicious in the first place:
    • When she gets a glimpse of Acrobatic Silky's horribly traumatic past, she weeps for her and outright begs Turbo Granny for a way to save her disintegrating soul after Acrobatic Silky gives up her life aura to bring Aira back to life.
    • She supports Jiji's decision not to exorcise Evil Eye out of his body once she too gets to see what Evil Eye's miserable life was like before his death.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Momo is not the "delicate" kind of girl, meaning, no frills or cutesy stuff. This, however, is balanced by the fact that she's very beautiful and stylish.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The tomboy to Aira's Girly Girl, who behaves like a snooty princess.
  • Too Hungry to Be Polite: When crab legs are involved, don't even try to get her attention.
  • Touched by Vorlons: The Serpo aliens accidentally unlock her psychic powers after they abducted her.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Crabs, as seen during the Turbo Granny arc.
  • Tsundere: She's very quick to deny her crush on Okarun and generally acts harsh towards him when in front of her friends. Deconstructed as her embarrassment causes her to be more mean than she intended, genuinely hurting Okarun's feelings and making him initially believe that she had no plans to actually be his friend.
  • Two First Names: "Ayase" is also a common name for girls in Japan.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: She telekinetically drops a water basin on Shiratori's head when she makes fun of Okarun behind his back.

    Ken "Okarun" Takakura

Okarun / Ken Takakura

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ken_takakura.png
Click here to see his "All Out" Form

Voiced by: Natsuki Hanae
A nerdy boy who loves aliens and wishes to meet one someday. He's possessed by the spirit of Turbo Granny, which gives him part of her power in exchange for stealing his genitalia.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Played with. Momo refers to him as "Okarun", which is a play of "Occult-kun". This stemmed out of her outright refusal to call him by his name, as "Ken Takakura" invokes a very different image in her mind. Eventually, it becomes a more affectionate nickname, as Okarun endears himself to her.
  • Astral Projection: An ability of the Turbo Granny which he gains and uses while in a coma, due to the injuries caused by the Space Globalists.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Okarun seeks to be Momo's friend because she went out of her way to prevent him from being bullied, but they establish a quick friendship when they realize their mutual love for the occult and the supernatural.
  • Best Friend: Momo is his, their relationship being one that he cherishes and cares for to no end. That is, on top of her being his Love Interest.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In the climax of the Space Globalists arc, he comes in to save Momo just as things are looking hopeless.
  • Bully Magnet: He's frequently picked on by his classmates for his nerdy looks and geeky interest in aliens.
  • Butt-Monkey: Aside from being the target of bullies, some of the most embarrassing things in the series generally happen to him. After all, it's the disappearance of his genitals that kick start the plot of the series.
  • Bridal Carry:
    • During the Kaiju arc, he carries Aira to safety after she apparently gets knocked unconscious.note
    • In the climax of the Space Globalists arc, he swoops in to save Momo after she's cornered by a group of enemies, and catches her in his arms like this.
  • Catchphrase: "I'm an awkward fellow," a famous line from a commercial Ken Takakura (the actor) starred in. Momo always gets flustered when he says it.
  • Character Tic: Okarun has a habit of adjusting his glasses from the outer rims every time he either talks seriously or is nervous.
  • Chick Magnet: He has at least four girls pining after him; Momo, Aira, his class president, and Vamola.
  • Conspiracy Theorist: The first thing he talks to Momo Ayase about is the theory that President Obama went to Mars and met aliens there. He's also a font of information on other alien-type enemies who show up.
  • Converted Fanboy: Becomes genuinely interested in spirits and ghosts after defeating Turbo Granny, and finds himself wanting to talk to Momo at length on the subject.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: When Jin barges back into Momo's life he grows paranoid about her being taken away from him. Thanks to his insecurities and his own social awkwardness he can't tell that Momo is Just Friends with the guy and she sees Jin's flirting as a nuisance. Eventually, however, he gets over it, and the two become genuine friends.
  • The Eeyore: Turning on his ghost powers makes him a real downer. He complains about everything, especially how tired he is, and won't stop spouting pessimistic lines about how he's doomed and no good.
  • Enlightenment Superpowers: Implied when he first managed to transform into Turbo Granny. In return for an increase in power, his mind got cleared up to the point where he got depressed— likely about himself. He also claimed that while his mind is cleared, his soul is "crushed".
  • Gag Penis: A lot of jokes are centered around his penis, especially early on.
  • Geek Physique: His sedentary, nerdy lifestyle means that he has the physique of a beanpole. He's constantly winded from running around everywhere. His muscle tone improves significantly while using the Turbo-Granny's powers, but he goes back to being skinny when he stops using them.
  • The Heart: He's very much the emotional core of the gang, with everyone being on good terms with him. Though unlike most examples, he is still more than capable of holding his own in a fight.
  • Hidden Depths: He is very affectionate and doting, which is an aspect that is not lost on Momo.
  • Hour of Power: He can only use the Turbo-Granny's powers twice a day, during which he has superhuman strength, speed, and reflexes.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: The reason why he's so obsessed with aliens is due to him coming to the conclusion that he's such an outcast that only extraterrestrials will be willing to give him a chance. He's proven wrong by Momo's companionship and is so ecstatic about having a First Friend that it's only later that he begins to see her in a romantic light.
  • In-Series Nickname: Momo refers to him solely as "Okarun" because his real name is the same as her Celeb Crush and saying it flusters her.
  • Insecure Love Interest: He becomes intensely concerned about Momo spending more time with Jiji upon learning that he's (allegedly) her First Love. Jiji's Bishōnen good looks, athletic physique, and outgoing personality bring all of Okarun's insecurities to the surface.
  • Irony: Okarun does not even remotely resemble the hardboiled actor Ken Takakura that Momo likes, even considering that his own name is Ken Takakura. The contrast between name and individual is so big that Momo cannot bring herself to call Okarun by his name.
  • Look What I Can Do Now!: Repeatedly subverted. Something gets in the way every time he tries to train himself off-screen so he can show off to Momo later, resulting in misunderstandings that lead to arguments between them.
  • Love Interest: Mutually with Momo.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: After Ken Takakura, natch. Momo refuses to call him by his real name because of her crush on the other Ken Takakura.
  • Nerd Glasses: Wears enormous round glasses at all times.
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: The same huge glasses that give him a nerdy, childish appearance in his normal form make his Turbo Granny form look cold and threatening.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Towards Momo, unwaveringly.
  • Significant Haircut: Ever since he started wielding the power of the Turbo Granny, his hair became frizzy.
  • Superpowered Evil Side:
    • After getting possessed by Turbo-Granny, he's able to transform into her and utilize her abilities twice a day so long as Momo keeps her in check while he does so. While he's in control of himself, he becomes The Eeyore and constantly complains about how tired and depressed he is. But if Momo slips up, Okarun will be transformed completely into the Turbo-Granny with no control over his actions despite being fully conscious.
    • When Turbo-Granny's consciousness is exorcised out of him by Seiko, Okarun retains his ability to take on Turbo-Granny's powers without risk of succumbing to her influence. But this state is also implied to remove some of Okarun's own inhibitions, speaking casually to both Momo and Shiratori by calling them by their first names and using much coarser language overall.
  • Super-Speed: Being possessed by Turbo Granny makes him equally fast, allowing him to sprint at speeds of 100 km/h and turn on a dime.
  • Telephone Teleport: A secondary skill of his Astral Projection abilities which he can also use through power lines, however he doesn't seem to have control of where he ends up, unless the phone is connected to someone on the other side.
  • Touched by Vorlons: He gains a fraction of Turbo Granny's spiritual power while she possesses him. Her power remains in him after her consciousness is relocated to a maneki neko figurine, allowing him to keep it.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: When using Turbo Granny's power, he's insanely strong and fast, but he isn't very good at actual fighting since it's unfamiliar to him.
  • Use Your Head: Okarun's signature move is an E. Honda-style headbutt.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: The Turbo-Granny can't swim, meaning that Okarun can't use his powers while submerged in water.
  • Why Can't I Hate You?: He's understandably jealous of Jiji when he starts getting close to Momo. When he gets to know Jiji better and realizes that he's a genuinely nice person, he internally questions why Jiji couldn't have been more unlikable.

    Seiko Ayase

Seiko Ayase, alias Santa Dodoria

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/seiko_ayase.png

A local TV psychic and Momo's grandma, whom she lives with. An expert on the supernatural who borrows power from a local god to perform exorcisms.

  • Absurdly Youthful Parents: Shiratori mistakes her for Momo's sister.
  • Anime Hair: Her hair is in a huge vertical braid that looks like a broom.
  • Barrier Warrior: Her powers involve the creation of magical barriers through talismans or drawing with the paintbrush hidden in her baseball bat. These barriers are incredibly harmful to yokai who try to cross them.
  • Batter Up!: Prefers to fight with a baseball bat. The end of it is actually a cap for a big paintbrush that she can use to create magic circles.
  • Big Damn Heroes: She comes in to save Momo and Manjiro from the Evil Eye in the climax of the Haunted House arc alongside Mr. Shrimp and Taro. They manage to capture the Evil Eye pretty quickly.
  • Commander Contrarian: Her default response to most proposals is "no", which is something of a Running Gag, as it shows the effects of the crankiness of her old age, even though she doesn't show it.
  • The Comically Serious: Her mood tends to go from bored to slightly miffed.
  • Cool Old Lady: She's a source of security for Momo and her friends.
  • Domain Holder: She borrows her spiritual powers from the local god of her city, meaning she can't use them outside of that area.
  • Eccentric Mentor: For Momo, Okarun, Jiji and Aira, who rely on her support to cope with their powers.
  • Foil: To Turbo Granny, in terms of mentoring the young'uns. Albeit she dispenses sage advice, while being less confrontational than Turbo Granny, she's more stubborn and dismissive.
  • Ignored Expert: Momo refuses to listen to her advice until she comes face to face with undeniable proof that the supernatural world exists.
  • I Reject Your Reality: Doesn't believe aliens exist even when Momo tells her she was abducted by them. When she's actually confronted with aliens, with one even owning its own spacecraft and leaving on it, Seiko is convinced that it's all the supernatural instead.
  • Mum Looks Like a Sister: She looks young enough to be mistaken for Momo's older sister rather than her grandmother.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She has a Navel-Deep Neckline and a number of shots emphasize her rear.
  • Mystical White Hair: Either due to age or her powers, she has white hair.
  • Not-So-Phony Psychic: She uses her psychic powers to guess that an idol is 27, is married with children, and that his favorite food is curry. He tells her that he's 20, single, and his favorite food is ramen and everyone in the studio laughs at her. Come the end of the chapter and the entire world sees she was right all along.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: She and Momo regularly snipe at each other, but on occasion Seiko displays genuine worry over her granddaughter's safety. After the fiasco with the worm and the Evil Eye, she uncharacteristically apologizes to Momo, Okarun, and Jiji for nearly getting them killed.
  • Older Than They Look: She's Momo's grandmother and yet has such a youthful appearance, Aira believes she's actually Momo's older sister and not her grandmother. Jiji had apparently always assumed she was Momo's mother and is shocked when he hears her referred to as her grandmother. She does have the crabby attitude of a stubborn grandma, though.
  • Old Master: Her looks aside, Seiko's powers and expertise are the real deal. She provides a great deal of exposition on how supernatural powers work and the rules involved in dealing with them.
  • Perpetual Frowner: She's no smiling cookie.
  • Put on a Bus: She and Turbo Granny are MIA for most of the Space Globalist arc on account of them being on a business trip. Though Okarun does run into them briefly partway through the arc.
  • Silver Fox: She's a markedly beautiful woman with an absurdly youthful appearance for her age.
  • Smoking Is Cool: She's constantly smoking cigarettes and is a pretty cool lady.
  • Team Mom: She's the primary voice of authority in the gang.

    Aira Shiratori

Aira Shiratori

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aira_3.png
Click here to see her Acrobatic Form

A student at Momo and Okarun's high school. A vain, popular girl who thinks that Momo's secretly a demon and she’s been chosen to protect the world from her.

  • Alpha Bitch: Shiratori is proud of her own beauty, treats being nice to people as noblesse oblige, and spreads a bunch of nasty rumors about Momo after she telekinetically clobbers her with a pan. She's not particularly good at being effectively mean, though.
  • Badass Adorable: All things considered Aira is pretty cute, especially with her Chuunibyou traits and over the top crush on Okarun. She also becomes quite an adept Dance Battler after Acrobatic Silky's aura is transferred to her.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Albeit it takes her a while, she's not a stranger to Momo or Okarun's kindness, so she aims to reciprocate. The problem comes from the fact that she's still pretty insufferable.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: Shiratori fully buys into the idea that her popularity and cuteness is what objectively makes her pure and the one chosen to save the world from the “demon” Momo.
  • Betty and Veronica: The Betty to Momo's Veronica, as Aira's a popular girly-girl while Momo's more of a delinquent tomboy.
  • Character Development: Introduced as an Alpha Bitch, her experiences with Momo and Okarun lead her to repent and bombard her own popularity at school by admitting that she made up rumors about Momo.
  • Chuunibyou: Momo outright calls her this when even after they saved her from Acrobatic Silky and brought her back to life, she declares her belief that Okarun and Seiko are both demons and Momo is controlling them.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: The looniest of the main cast, obsessed with being The Chosen One and in general is rather airheaded.
  • Curtains Match the Window: She has pink hair and dark pink eyes.
  • Disney Death: She dies after being eaten by Acrobatic Silky, but luckily Acro decides to give up her soul in order to revive her.
  • Friend to All Children: She's repeatedly seen playing with Chiquitita, Mr. Shrimp's son. Played for Laughs when she does an immediate 180 on Mr. Shrimp staying on earth the moment he brings up Chiquitita needing milk to survive.
  • Hidden Depths: She's not a stranger to Momo and Okarun's kindness, both who chip out at her prideful walls. Albeit they butt heads constantly, it's shown that she does want her relationship with Momo to get better, and she's also presented as having something of a crush on Okarun.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Aira is absolutely head-over-hells for Okarun, but he only has eyes for Momo.
  • The Lancer: She's constantly butting heads with Momo and continually asserts that she's the leader of the gang.
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: Aira is vain, haughty, abrasive, and a pretty good friend once you get to know her.
  • Missing Mom: According to flashback dialog in the Acrobat Silky chapters, her mother is deceased.
  • Not So Above It All: She initially dismisses the heavy metal band during the attempted exorcism of the Evil Eye, but quickly finds herself jamming out to them alongside Momo and Okarun.
  • Smitten Teenage Girl: She becomes this for Okarun, seemingly unable to be rational when around him.
  • Touched by Vorlons: She gains Acrobatic Silky's powers after she transfers her soul to her.
  • Tsundere: She behaves and acts selfishly, but she starts being helpful towards Momo and Okarun. She won't be caught saying good things about Momo anytime soon, but what she says and what she does start having a stark divide, showing that she's kind much unlike her words.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: For as much crap as she and Momo give each other, at the end of the day the two of them clearly are friends. After the Slit-Mouthed Woman disposes of the Space Globalists she, Momo, and Vamola all hug each other.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Using the Acrobatic Silky’s powers gives her insane acrobatic skill and prehensile hair but she lacks the power to finish off her enemies, giving the Serpoians a chance to recover and use their psychic powers on her.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Following the Loch Ness Monster fight, and Momo, Aira and Okuran ending up varying degrees of naked in the school corridor, Aira goes back to her class, telling them she doesn't want to talk about what happened. Her classmates suggest it was Momo's fault, blaming it on her being jealous of Aira's beauty and talking about how she'll sleep with anybody male and how they should get payback... only for Aira to admit of her own free will that she made that up and tell them to stop badmouthing Momo.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Shiratori acts like she's the heroine of a typical magical girl story, making speeches about how she's been chosen to save the world from the "demon" Momo, and twists everything that happens around her as if it confirms her position as the beautiful and pure heroine.

    Jin "Jiji" Enjoji

Jin Enjoji

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jin_enjoji_infobox.png
Click here to see him possessed

Momo's Childhood Friend and First Love. He reconnects with her to get her help with some spirits haunting his home and family.

  • Bait-and-Switch Character Intro: When Jiji first shows up and is introduced by Seiko as Momo's first love, Okarun nervously thinks that he must be cool, tough guy... only for the very next page to show that he's every bit as goofy as the rest of the cast.
  • Betty and Veronica: The athetlic, extroverted Veronica to Okarun's geeky and introverted Betty.
  • The Big Guy: The tallest and physically strongest of the party.
  • Chick Magnet: All the girls in his class begin blushing as soon as he introduces himself. Those who weren't impressed were quickly won over by his charms, as Momo's friends unfortunately attest.
  • Demonic Possession: His body is completely taken over by the Evil Eye after he frees it from containment above Turbo-Granny's warnings. Evil Eye then declares his intentions to kill all humans with Jiji's body.
  • Demoted to Satellite Love Interest: It's said that Jiji was Momo's First Love, though it becomes readily apparent for him that she only seems to have eyes for Okarun.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: Beneath his corny affections and enthusiasm, it's shown that Jiji yearns for Momo and doesn't quite like how close she's gotten to Okarun.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He appears in a flashback as one of the people who bullied Momo for performing the ritual to ward off spirits.
  • Eye Scream: Momo, in a fit of suicidal mind control, tears his eye out with a piece of glass when he tries to stop her. The Evil Eye heals it when he possesses him.
  • First Love: Seiko calls him as much, but Momo questions if they were ever really that close during childhood, especially when he was one of the many kids who bullied her. That said, you can see young Momo blushing and hanging on his every word during flashbacks to their childhood.
  • First-Name Basis: He calls Momo by her first name, something that ends up bothering Okarun.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: Once Okarun tames the Evil Eye, he takes off his underwears and goes completely naked in public, as he mentions that the underwear truly wants to kill all humans and is not on board with the idea of only trying to kill Okarun.
  • Fun Personified: Jiji's a total goofball who's constantly running his mouth and joking around.
  • Gag Penis: In the Full-Frontal Assault scene mentioned above, Seiko compliments him for having a nice penis.
  • Hidden Depths: He admits to Momo in chapter 92 that he's not as much of an airhead as he comes off, as he thinks he can only talk normally to Momo if he's joking around.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: He towers over Momo.
  • Idiot Hair: Has a prominent cowlick in front of his hair and can act rather foolish when excited.
  • Involuntary Shapeshifting: While possessed by the Evil Eye, Jiji transforms whenever he gets into contact with cold water and needs warm water to get back to normal.
  • Just Friends: With Momo, who doesn't quite show any particular romantic attraction towards him. Zigzagged in that Jiji is heavily implied to still have some feelings for Momo.
  • Kamehame Hadoken: In the Space Globalists arc, he learns how to shoot a blast of psychic energy. He almost calls it the Kamehameha, but decides on "Evil Gun" at the last second.
  • Keet: Jiji is just full of energy whenever he speaks and incredibly athletic to boot. His house is near the top of a steep hill and barely looks winded when Momo and Okarun are keeling over from having to run up so many stairs.
  • Ki Manipulation: Jiji learns to use this ability under Seiko's tutelage.
  • Large Ham: The guy loves being dramatic and making random poses just for the sake of it.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Whenever the Evil Eye takes control, all his clothes are immediately blasted off his body, leaving him wearing only his tighty whities and showing off his muscular physique. When he ends up completely nude in front of Momo, Aira, and Hana, all three of them look away in embarrassment.
  • Muscles Are Meaningful: He's far more athletic than Momo or Okarun and has the muscular physique to match.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: He's left horrified when he sees that he nearly killed Momo while under Evil Eye's possession in Chapter 56. While Momo understands and quickly forgives him, he continues feeling very guilty about it for the rest of the chapter and it strains his friendship with Okarun for a bit until the latter finds a compromise for Evil Eye.
  • Nice Guy: He's quite selfless, which is an aspect that puts Okarun at odds on how to approach the fact that they may compete for Momo's attention.
  • Pretty Boy: His dashing good looks and outgoing personality quickly have everyone in Momo's class falling head over heals for him.
  • Shared Family Quirks: He apparently takes after his parents in terms of his energy. It's later shown that his mother specifically has similar mannerisms.
  • Stepford Smiler: He's an extreme Keet and jokester, and seems oddly detached from his parents' hospitalization. It becomes apparent later on down the line however that he's genuinely worried sick about them and is merely putting up his usual funny front to cope. Once he reunites with them at the end of the Evil Eye arc, he's on the verge of tears over seeing that they're okay.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Gains one when he fuses with the Evil Eye, who is hellbent on killing all of humanity in revenge for what was done to him when he was alive.
  • Taking the Bullet: During the chaos involving the yokai at his house, Jiji shields Momo from her own Mind Rape-induced suicide attempts repeatedly, getting glass shards slicing across his eyelid and digging into his arm.
  • Teen Genius: Turbo-Granny explicitly notes that Jiji's spiritual powers are extraordinary for a boy his age despite having just awakened the ability to see spirits. This, combined with this athleticism, makes him the perfect vessel for the Evil Eye.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: A fairly minor example, but Jiji does come off as a bit of a brat in his Early-Bird Cameo when he makes fun of Momo. Fast forward to when he properly appears in the story and he's a pretty friendly guy.

    Kinta Sakata
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kinta_color.png

A nerdy schoolmate of Momo and Okarun who wants to be more popular.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: He's desperate to have any girl be into him and is very upfront about this. Most girls don't exactly reciprocate his sentiments, to say the least.
  • Ascended Fanboy: He is over the moon when he gets to control Momo's house-turned-mech, and busts out as many moves as he can when fighting the kaiju alien. He'd even been training for motion sickness in the off-chance he'd be piloting.
  • Big Damn Heroes: He's about the last guy you would expect it from, but he seriously comes in clutch at the climax of the Space Globalists arc by rescuing Vamola mid-fall and transforming Momo's house into a giant mecha.
  • Comically Missing the Point: He completely gets the wrong idea when he overhears Momo and Okarun talking about Okarun's balls.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Even calling him friend is a bit of a stretch, since Momo and Aira treat him as annoyance due to his creepy behavior and his self-important attitude; Jiji and Vamola seem indifferent to him; and Okarun is just polite to everyone.
Aira: And what are you doing here?
Sakata: How mean! I'm a member of this group too aren't I?
  • Hidden Depths: His geekiness is actually an asset in combat, as he has extensive knowledge of mecha tropes and a vivid imagination.
  • Open Mouth, Insert Foot: Dude's cringe personified. Almost everything he says is stated in a manner that makes the people around him roll their eyes.
  • Otaku: Complete with the portly Geek Physique, Sakata is a massive fanboy of the Mecha genre and even collects plastic replicas.
  • Ship Tease: With Vamola. At the climax of the Space Globalists arc, Kinta saves Vamola mid-fall and builds a mecha around the two of them, which they use to beat the Space Globalist leader.
  • Shout-Out: His name is a reference to the Japanese folklore hero Kintaro, or Sakata no Kintoki as he's alternatively called.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: While he's definitely a bit of a jerk, Chapter 99 shows that deep down Sakata is well aware and ashamed of his failings as a person and just wants there to be something special about him that both he and his peers can respect.

    Vamola
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vamola_color.png
Click here to see her suited form
A female alien in a Kaiju suit who came to earth in search of a powerful individual to marry.
  • Ancient Astronauts: Her species are the Sumerians. They had their own planet, but Earth was their secondary planet, which they visited by traveling in pyramid-portals.
  • Arc Villain: Of the Kaiju Arc, due to the main characters hunting her golden ball, which is a power source for her. Though it's retroactively zigzagged when her flashback reveals that she simply lost control of her suit when she was fighting the gang.
  • Best Her to Bed Her: She goes around Earth trying to find a man who can beat her, as her adoptive mother told her to find a strong man. She falls for Okarun after thinking that he was the one to beat her, when in reality it was Momo and Aira.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: To signify her identity as an alien, her pupils are star-shaped.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: With Momo. They definitely start off on the wrong foot, with their first interaction being Momo drop-kicking Vamola after seeing her kiss Okarun. By the end of the Space Globalists arc, however, the two of them have practically become sisters.
  • Human Aliens: She looks just like a human with the exception of her eyes and antennae, which is why Seiko (unsurprisingly) doesn't believe she's an alien.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: One of the Kur runs her through during the climactic confrontation. Fortunately, Rokuro had some alien healing tech ready.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: In Japanese, her name is read as "Bamora", the VIZ translation spells it as "Vamola". It's hard to say what is the original intention, since the letters "v" and "l" don't exist in Japanese.
  • Kaiju: She was initially mistaken for a Kaiju but she actually wears a Kaiju combat suit that is capable of growing to massive size.
  • Last of Her Kind: The Space Globalists slaughtered most of her people and what survivors were left were then turned into livestock to feed their Queen to make weapons. It is heavily implied the Globalists destroyed the Sumerian planet, with Vamola likely being the last child of Sumer. Thankfully subverted in Chapter 120, where, despite heavy losses, many Sumerians, including Vamola's adoptive grandmothers, managed to survive and fight back against the Globalists.
  • Love at First Sight: Okarun was the first human she saw after leaving her suit and immediately kissed him, to the other’s shock. Okarun isn’t interested in her advances and tries to inform her Sakata, who is more than eager to win her affection, was the one piloting the robot that defeated her but Vamola continued to cling to Okarun.
  • Mistaken for Betrayal: Thanks in large part to Poor Communication Kills Momo and the others mistakenly come to the conclusion that Vamola was a scout for the alien invasion force. In actuality, she is a refugee from a planet the Kur invaded, who stole one of their suits while making her escape.
  • Notzilla: Her kaiju is inspired by the king of monsters, as a reptilian, dinosaur-like monster.
  • Rei Ayanami Expy: She looks like an almost exact replica of Rei but with antennae. In terms of personality, she initially seems to fit the bill by being quiet and mysterious, but that's only because the audience literally can't understand what she's saying. In actuality, her personality turns out to be rather cheery and extroverted.
  • Ship Tease: With Kinta. At the climax of the Space Globalists arc, Kinta saves Vamola mid-fall and builds a mecha around the two of them, which they use to beat the Space Globalist leader.
  • Sizeshifter: Her suit allows her to change from its normal size, about the size of a tall human, to a full fledged kaiju monster.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Her kaiju suit is made from the converted matter of her species' survivors, and resembles their patron god.
  • The Unintelligible: Vamola is capable of communicating but nobody knows her language and even a translator is unable to translate more than a couple of her words. She is eventually able to learn human language after the others teach her, but it's still a work in progress.

Friends & Allies

    Turbo Granny

Turbo Granny

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/turbo_granny.png
Click here to see her sealed form

Voiced by: Mayumi Tanaka
A fearsome spirit who looks like an old woman and who can run at 100 kilometers per hour.
  • Arc Villain: Of the Turbo Granny arc, as you might have guessed. She then becomes an ally of sorts to the protagonists, but doesn't do a real Heel–Face Turn in doing so. She just has nowhere else to go.
  • Dirty Old Woman: She is very interested in male genitalia, offering to suck off Okarun when she meets him.
  • Discard and Draw: Her sealing made her lose her original powers, but being put into a Maneki Neko gave her some ability to manipulate luck.
  • Domain Holder:She's unfathomably powerful so long as she stays within the bound spirit’s territory.
  • Dub Name Change: Her name in Japanese is "Turbo Babaa (ターボババア)", with the English version using the closest equivalent to the latter half. (This translation is shared for the character of the same name in Shin Megami Tensei.)
  • Evil Old Folks: A cruel and vindictive spirit who looks like an old woman wearing traditional clothing.
  • Exact Words: Momo says she must count to ten minutes before she can chase after her and Okarun. So Turbo Granny “counts” to ten minutes, skipping whole minutes, in a few seconds since Momo didn’t specify how to count to ten minutes.
  • Foil: To Seiko Ayase, as Turbo Granny may dispense sage advice as well, but in a more rude and violent way, and mostly for self-benefit. She's also not shy about calling people "idiots" to their faces.
  • Fusion Dance: Has fused with a bound spirit, and if separated for any reason, it will do whatever it can to re-fuse with Turbo Granny.
  • Hidden Depths: Santa Dodoria mentions that Turbo Granny always appears near the death sites of girls who died horribly in what seems to be a display of protectiveness, though she would never admit it.
  • Little Stowaway: She sneaks into Okarun's backpack to be brought to school, and later Momo's backpack to tag along to the hot springs.
  • Logical Weakness: Since most of her power comes from being fused with a spirit bound to a location, leaving said location causes her power to drastically lower.
  • Nightmare Face: When in a villainous mood her face twists and elongates and her eyes stretch and bulge.
  • Nobody Calls Me "Chicken"!: One way to stop her from immediately killing you is to challenge her to a race or a game that involves speed. She takes great pride in her speed and won’t turn down any challenge.
  • Sealed Evil in a Teddy Bear: She barely manages to escape being destroyed alongside the crab spirit and possesses Okarun, but Momo's grandma slaps her spirit out of Okarun and into a maneki neko figurine. She isn't able to grab her powers on the way, so now she's inhabiting a five-inch-tall doll until Momo's grandma gives her back her powers.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: She swears like a sailor, and almost everything she says is peppered with insults.
  • Super-Speed: But of course. She’s capable of running at 100 km/h and doesn’t even slow down when turning, which allows her to catch up to a train that’s going at 120 km/h but has to slow down when it turns.
  • Token Evil Teammate: After her defeat she hangs out with the main characters and sometimes helps them, but she hasn't changed her morals at all.
  • Youkai: Described by Seiko as a youkai. In real life, "Turbo Babaa" is a somewhat well-known but definitely newer addition to Japanese mythology (as indicated by her Gratuitous English name).

    Mr. Shrimp

Boxing Alien / Peeny-Weeney / Mr. Mantis Shrimp

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ddd_boxer.png
Click here to see his second form

A shrimp-like Gig Worker wearing boxing gloves.

  • Action Dad: He's a single father working to support his son, and he's more than capable of kicking ass.
  • Anti-Villain: In sharp contrast to his bosses, he turns out to be a pretty nice guy who only antagonized the gang in order to pay for his son's medical condition. Unsurprisingly, he pulls a Heel–Face Turn after they show him compassion.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The main characters' group bandaging him up and feeding him curry is apparently the nicest he's ever been treated, and he swears loyalty to them from then forward.
  • Bizarre Alien Biology: The boxing Gig Worker and his species as a whole have blood close enough to cow milk that it can be used as a blood transfusion for them.
  • Boxing Battler: He wears boxing gloves and fights by punching opponents at high speed.
  • The Bus Came Back: After departing to his home planet at the end of the Loch Ness Monster arc, he returns in the next arc after realizing that a cow would not survive on his home planet.
  • Catchphrase: "Chiquitita, ewe and mai cry." Apparently referring to his son, whom he calls "Chiquitita". It changes to a quote from an old energy drink commercial when he's mutated.
  • Didn't Think This Through: He and the main characters didn't seem to account for how his home planet's environment might not be suitable for a cow to live in, forcing him and Chiquitita to indefinitely stay on Earth and work on a dairy farm so as to get a good constant supply of milk.
  • Expy: His mantis shrimp form is an expy of Alien Baltan from Ultraman.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After being one the main antagonists of the Serpo Arc, he learns that Earth can easily supply him with the blood transfusions that his son needs from the main characters since his blood is just milk, which is plentifully available on Earth. He later permanently moves with Chiquitita to Earth and becomes a recurring ally to the main characters in Alien affairs.
  • No-Sell: During the fight with the space globalists, Shrimp not only tanks the mantis/water beetle armor invader's laser claws, but he also expels the invader's venom from his body with a flex and a one-liner.
I may be weak... But my people are fighters.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: He's only working for the Serpoians to pay for his sickly son's blood transfusions.
  • Unfortunate Names: When translating his name for human pronunciation, his name is given as "Peniichinkos", which sound like smushing two slang words for penis (penis and chinko/dick) together. Every official translation has its own version of this, from the English translation calling him "Peeney-Weeney" to the Spanish translation calling him "Penecito" (little penis). All of the teens present hold in their laughter.
  • Visual Development: In the Loch Ness arc, he's drawn as tall and muscular, with his eyes being obscured. As soon as the gang gives him medical treatment, he's drawn as short, pudgy and has cartoony eyes on the ends of his antennae, mainly to give him a far friendlier appearance.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: As a mantis shrimp, the boxing Gig Worker has the punching ability of a mantis shrimp, and is even more powerful underwater, but doesn't have gills, so it keeps having to surface to breathe.

    Taro

Taro

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/download_3979.jpg

A living anatomy mannequin that Momo and Okarun meet while looking for Okarun's missing testicle. He's in love with another sentient mannequin named Hana.

  • Creepy Good: He might look like a Creepy Doll, but he's a pretty okay guy once you know him.
  • Detachment Combat: He's capable of detaching and reassembling his body at will.
  • Eerie Anatomy Model: He's an anatomy model that certainly scared a group of students that snuck at school during the night.
  • Lethal Joke Character: His ability to reform himself after being broken apart is initially treated as kind of a gag. However, it manages to be extremely useful in the Monoglian Death Worm arc by allowing him to turn his body into a prison for the Evil Eye.
  • Sealed Inside a Person-Shaped Can: Literally in this case when Seiko uses Taro and his detachment abilities to trap a possessed Jiji inside his person-shaped body.

    Manjiro

Manjiro

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/manjiro.png

A monk that is being mentored by Seiko, and who arrives to help Momo against the Kito family and the Evil Eye.

  • Badass Preacher: He's a priest and exorcist like Seiko and sure knows how to fight.
  • Big Ol' Unibrow: His most prominent feature is his monobrow.
  • Poor Communication Kills: When Seiko called to assign him to keep an eye on Momo and her friends, her brief and overly vague message meant he didn't connect the dots until much later.

    Rin Sawaki

Rin Sawaki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rin_sawaki.png

The representative of Okarun's, Vamola's, and Kinta's class.

  • All the Other Reindeer: During her childhood, she and her friends were going to try out for junior idol auditions. However, Rin ended up having to look after her grandmother that day due to her mother being busy with work. She tried to explain to her friends why she couldn't make it, but they refused to hear her out and ostracized her.
  • Covert Pervert: She has some... interesting thoughts upon thinking that Okarun and Turbo Granny are vampires.
  • Did I Just Say That Out Loud?: Said thoughts apparently transmit directly from her imagination to her mouth.
  • Disappeared Dad: Her father passed away when she was at a young age.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Rin is introduced as an unnamed background character, but becomes a more prominent character following the Space Globalists arc.
  • Heartfelt Apology: After Momo risks her life to help Rin's dilemma with the Ombudsman and having seen her kindness upfront, Rin sincerely apologizes for her previous hostile behavior towards her as she admits that she once thought of Momo as a troublemaking punk who was out to pick on Okarun.
  • My Greatest Failure: In her eyes, not being able to make it to the junior idol auditions with her friends the first time they asked. When her friend Mai was too nervous to audition without her and Rin agreed to come after a call from her mother, both Mai and her mother would end up killed in a car accident on the way to pick her up, resulting in Mai seemingly haunting Rin as an Ombusman in the present.
  • Stress Vomit: She starts to get the heaves while riding the float through void space. The pursuing angry spirits surely did not help.

    Zuma Unji
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ddd_unji.png

A student at Renjaku High who came into contact with Okarun's testicle.

  • Big Damn Heroes: When Momo gets trapped in the board game and is unable to use her powers, she's attacked by a giant suit of armor. At the last moment, Zuma comes in and saves her by overpowering the armor.
  • Japanese Delinquents: Just like the rest of Renjaku High, Zuma is a delinquent. Though given what other people say about him, Zuma seems to be a genuinely good person who looks after his classmates.
  • Mundane Utility: He uses umbrella-based powers to fight, but they can also be used as normal umbrellas, though considering he can only use two before needing to recharge, it's a waste of an use (though his other personality doesn't care so much).
  • Parasol of Pain: Zuma's powers seem to be umbrella-themed, possibly implying connection to a karakasa.
  • Punny Name: Zuma's a kid who got trapped in a supernatural board game, switching out with a man who got trapped for years (from his perspective) as a child. Now sound out his name.

Supernatural Beings

Spirits

    Bound Spirit of the Tunnel
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bound_spirit_of_the_tunnel.png

A bound spirit remaining in the same tunnel the Turbo Granny does, the two having combined into one ultra powerful spirit.

    Acrobatic Silky

Acrobatic Silky

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/acrobatic_silky_2.png

A ghost resembling a tall woman in a red dress with floor-length hair. Obsessed with getting Shiratori to call her "Mommy".

  • Dance Battler: Uses dance moves in combination with her hair to fight.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She's the ghost of a ballet dancer who sold her body to provide for herself and her young daughter. Human traffickers eventually kidnapped her daughter, causing her to throw herself off a roof in despair.
  • Driven to Suicide: When she was a human, she took her own life after her daughter was kidnapped by human traffickers.
  • Mama Bear: Her intense love for Shiratori makes her extremely protective of her, and she sacrifices herself to bring her back to life.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Has a moment of clarity after being beaten and seeing that she killed Shiratori, the one she believed was her daughter.
  • Redemption Equals Death: She sacrifices her soul to return Shiratori back to life, though she manages to ascend to Heaven after Shiratori calls her "Mommy" like she wanted.

    Evil Eye
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ddd_evileye.png
Click here to see him as a child
A spirit of a young boy from centuries past who was sacrificed to appease a snake cryptid. Any who meets it gaze will be overcome with a desire to commit suicide.
  • Arc Villain: Of the Evil Eye Arc, which focuses on the main characters trying to exorcise him from Jiji's body, or at least find a way to tame him.
  • Barrier Warrior: Can create an indestructible house-shaped barrier to trap opponents in.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: It destroys almost all of Jiji's clothes after possessing his body, leaving him striding around in his underwear.
  • Grand Theft Me: It tricks Jiji into letting it possess him.
  • Hazy-Feel Turn: Once he strikes a deal with Okarun, he is left unable to fight anyone, so even when he appears, he just hangs around doing nothing and looking bored.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: All it ever wanted back when it was alive was to be free to play with other children, but was instead imprisoned in preparation to be sacrificed to a massive snake cryptid. When it died and became a ghost, it tried to befriend the son of the family living in the house it haunted, only for history to repeat itself.
    • Okarun manages to tame it by exploiting this. After some intense training, he challenges the Evil Eye to a fight and proves himself to be a Worthy Opponent. But the way the Evil Eye reacts to their first proper fight, it's obvious that it's now perceiving Okarun as a twisted playmate. The "fun" he has fighting him leads to it deciding to exclusively fight him instead of wanting to kill all humans.
  • Kill All Humans: After possessing Jiji, it reveals its goal to kill humanity.
  • Magical Eye: It has the power to induce suicidal thoughts in anyone who gaves into its eye. But when faced with the Mongolian Death Wyrm's own Mind Rape ability, they cancel each other out, allowing Okarun and Momo to regain their senses.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: While in possession of Jiji's body, it comes across as this thanks to its genocidal hatred of humanity. It becomes even more apparent that it's still a child when it takes over Jiji's body at school and acts like a temperamental little boy that Momo has to babysit. Okarun actually contains him by simply treating him as one and saying they will only fight once a week, and only if the Evil Eye doesn't attack anybody else, which he does, since fighting him is enjoyable and the closest thing to playing he can do.
  • Sadist: It relishes in beating the crap out of Okarun and fantasizes about doing the same to Momo. It's later highlighted that the Evil Eye is mentally still a child, and killing is really just how it understands playing.
  • Sanity Slippage: After being sacrificed to the worm cryptid, the boy that would become the Evil Eye tried to interact with and later save the child in the sacrificial house. Unfortunately, he failed, and his own grudge along with the despair of all the children sacrificed in the worm's name twisted him into a genocidal yokai.
  • Third Eye: It has one on its forehead when in Jiji's body.
  • Undead Child: It appears to Jiji as the young boy it once was.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Child: He was a young boy who dreamed of having friends, but was raised for the express purpose of being sacrificed to the Snake God. Once returning as a ghost, he just wanted to befriend the child of the house's family and even tries to save him from being sacrificed. Alas, the rage against the Kito Family turned him into a monster.

    Tulpa
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ddd_tulpa_1.jpg
Three of the Tulpas
A spirit created from the collective fear of the music class students and taking the form of six famous musicians throughout history.
  • Berserk Button: In order to summon the Tulpa, one must play the music room piano badly at night. At which point, the Tulpa appears and attacks the offender.
  • Musical Assassin: Having taken the form of six famous musicians, the Tulpa is capable of many music based attacks like exploding music notes.
  • Reality Warper: The Tulpa's surroundings change according to what it plays, such as creating a paddy field to slow down Okarun and Aira enough for their attacks to hit.
  • Tulpa: Invoked in the whole definition of the concept. It also has aspects of a Fighting Spirit.

    Slit-Mouthed Woman

Slit-Mouthed Woman / Reiko Kashima

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ddd_slitmouth.png
Click here to see her without make-up

A Yokai living in an abandoned site in the city. She asks people if she looks beautiful and attack those that hurt her pride in her looks.

  • Abled in the Adaptation: Unlike the original Reiko Kashima, Dandadan's iteration of the character still has her lower half of her body, primarily because she's more closely based on the Slit-Mouthed Woman herself rather than Reiko. Though a brief flashback to her past shows her having lost her legs when the bombs struck Tokyo during World War 2.
  • Adaptational Attractiveness: Without her make-up, she becomes even more good-looking than her urban legend counterpart, as she doesn't have the slit mouthed, or the strange eyes some version (most notably, the 2007 movie Carved version) had.
  • Adaptational Badass: The legend usually portrays the Yokai as an urban legend whose powers are limited to appearing suddenly, and disfiguring or killing a single person at a time. As portrayed here, Reiko Kashima is described as the strongest Yokai known, and besides having a ton of powers the original legend never mentions (capacity to hypnotize others into acting as proxies, trapping things inside her mirror, and using reflective surfaces to teleport and attack), she is powerful enough to single handedly stop an alien invasion.
  • Adaptational Ugliness: The Slit Mouthed Woman is generally portrayed as looking beautiful with the exception of her immensely deformed mouth. Here, the mouth is still deformed, but now she as a whole looks pretty worse for wears, with gangly limbs; disproportionate body; and terrible, KISS-like make-up.
  • Composite Character: She is a mix of three female figures from popular Japanese urban legends: she has the namesake of Reiko Kashima and lost her legs due to tragic circumstances similarly to her in her backstory, has the main appearance, legend, Berserk Button, and title of the Slit-Mouthed Woman, and the height, white dress, alternate beautiful appearance, and modus operandi (re: her relentless pursuit of her young targets/victims until their death) of the Hachishakusama or Eight-Foot-Tall Woman.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: She wipes out the entire space globalist invasion force in seconds with her mirror shenanigans and a big ol' fist.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: It's heavily implied that she was a civilian caught in the Tokyo bombing raids during World War 2.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: After the Space Globalists Arc, she realizes what she seeks more than anything is to love once again like she once had been loved when she was alive. She leaves town to look for love, but not before saying that, if she is ever in the mood, she will come back to kill Momo.
  • Invincible Villain: Seiko states outright that the Slit-Mouthed Woman is impossible to take in a fight; one can only escape her wrath by playing by her rules to avoid her for a certain number of days.
  • Mirror Monster: She has powers related to mirrors, being able to use her hand mirror to transport herself through any mirror-like surface, and trap people inside the mirror as long as they're both being reflected by it. During the period she is active, one of her mirror-related powers is to hypnotize people into acting on her behalf when they look in a mirror.
  • Must Be Invited: She will leave her usual stomping grounds after dark to hunt down her targets, but won't break into their homes. She can, however, try to trick them into letting her in by imitating someone else's voice.
  • Shipper on Deck: Hilariously, she becomes supportive of Momo and Okarun's relationship, and warns the former not to dither on her feelings for the latter for too long lest Reiko take him away from her. Despite the bad blood between them and previously declaring that she detests Momo's existence, Reiko genuinely wishes her well in her romantic endeavors before taking her leave.
  • Trauma Button: Seeing the ships of the alien invasion above her triggers memories of her caught in a bombing raid. This enrages her and makes her focus destroying the aliens over getting back at Momo.
  • The Unfought: Upon seeing Okarun protect Momo, she remembers her own love when young and decides to let go of her rivalry and leaves Momo behind.
  • Villainous Rescue: She appears right when a fleet of alien ships invade Earth, making Momo fall to her knees in despair at the sheer hopelessness of the situation. However, the sight of the alien ships in the sky triggers traumatic memories in the Slit Mouthed Woman and makes her focus on getting rid of them instead of Momo.
  • Voice Changeling: When she returns, she is able to change her voice to mimic others, in an attempt to lure Momo out.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: She is a quite tough opponent, but saying "pomade" at her 10 times is enough to exorcise her. However, this is temporary, has severe diminishing returns (Momo would need to say it 100 times to work again), and will make her extremely angry as she spends a whole week hunting whoever says it.

    Ombudsman
The spirit of Rin Sawaki's deceased childhood friend, Mai Kawabanga, that turned into a yokai and started possessing her best friend.
  • Demonic Possession: As someone who died filled with regrets during their childhood, Mai has turned into an Ombudsman possessing her childhood friend, Rin. She isn't able to consciously remember her memories until she's exorcised, however.
  • Guardian Entity: Following the exorcism, Mai's spirit doesn't enter into the afterlife, but instead stays around Rin until she can achieve her dream of becoming an idolnote . Unlike before, however, her original personality is still there.

Aliens

    The Serpoians

The Serpoians

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/serpoians_true_form.png
Click here to see their disguised form

Aliens from the planet Serpo who have come to Earth to harvest humans' banana organs.

  • Aliens Are Bastards: They are aliens that want to harvest the sexual organs of humans without caring what the humans might say about it. They're also pretty callous towards the Gig Workers.
  • Arc Villain: One of them serves as the main antagonist of the Serpo Arc, being the boss of the Boxing Alien and the Loch Ness Monster Alien.
  • Bad Boss: They don’t hold back their attacks even if one of their Gig Workers are in the way, citing We Have Reserves as an excuse, and dock their pay if they fail to accomplish their objective.
  • Calling Your Attacks: Serpoians frequently shout "Six sensory organs!" and "Serpo Serpogrammetry!" when activating their telekinetic powers, though they don't have to and will use the catchphrase as a bluff.
  • Combination Attack: Three Serpoians can use their psychic powers at once to create an area of powerful energy they call THE AWESOME ZONE.
  • Create Your Own Hero: Their Mind Rape (combined with the literal thing) attempt against Momo ends up unlocking her spiritual powers for messing with her brain. Momo waking up her spiritual powers, by extension, is capable of holding Turbo Granny back, and causes the entirety of the heroes of the manga to eventually assemble against them.
  • Enemy Mine: The only Serpoian left teams up with the heroes against the Space Globalists in the homonymous arc, as vengeance for them destroying and stealing everything from them.
  • Expy:
    • Of the Dada from Ultraman, sharing their black-and-white zig-zagging skin, telekinesis, and surreal behavior.
    • Their disguised form's head shape and status as all-male clones also bring the Sontarans to mind.
  • Face Full of Alien Wing-Wong: They don't directly breed with other species, but harvest their genitals in an obviously sexual manner, using the fruits of the process to compensate for a lack of genetic diversity.
  • Force and Finesse: The Finesse to the Kur's Force. At least on Earth, the Serpoians stay in long-term hiding and operate in small cells. Okarun theorizes they're trying to study Earth's supernatural phenomena that their technology cannot defeat through brute force. The idea is at least strategically vindicated when the Kur invade, as their armada is wiped out by a single ghost.
  • Hugh Mann: Their human "disguises" are horrifying, perpetually smiling masks shaped vaguely like a Lego minifigure's head.
  • Mind over Matter: Serpoians have strong telekinetic abilities.
  • One-Gender Race: All Serpoians are male and require females of other species to provide needed genetic diversity.
  • Phallic Weapon: One of them harvests organs and modifies other lifeforms with a crotch-mounted mechanical tentacle—or possibly its actual penis.
  • Unusual Euphemism: They refer to human genitals (of any variety) as "banana organs".

"Rokuro"

Voiced by: Kazuya Nakai
The lone Serpoian survivor of the Space Globalist / Kur incursion on Earth. Initially approaches the gang as allies of convenience against a common foe, but surprisingly keeps his word and even saves Vamola's life over his own.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Despite reversing the situation of the Serpoians on Earth and helping drive off the Space Globalist Kur, Rokuro is cast out for deviating from the Serpoian physical and mental template.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Rokuro spends much of the Space Globalist arc missing his lower torso and an arm.
  • Healing Shiv: Rokuro deploys some manner of healing substance through his tentacle, saving Vamola's life.
  • Klingons Love Shakespeare: While disguised and hiding from Reiko Kashima in a manga cafe, Rokuro pesters Momo to remove the foundation from his face so he can read some manga. Though it's subverted in that he was seemingly trying to lure Momo into a false sense of security so he could attack her when she wasn't looking. It's double subverted when it turns out that Rokuro was actually trying to heal her, indicating that he was actually telling the truth about wanting to read manga.
  • Mook–Face Turn: Rokuro becomes a vital ally for the gang during the Space Globalists arc. Somewhat zigzagged in that it's an Enemy Mine situation, but Momo at least does seem to consider him something of a friend after he sacrifices himself to save Vamola. However, it's subverted since they go back to being enemies as soon as he turns out to be alive. And then it's double subverted by the fact that Momo's influence caused Rokuro to develop individuality, causing him to get kicked out by the rest of the Serpoians. Rokuro sorta blames Momo for ruining his life.
  • Scars Are Forever: The face of his human disguise bears marks from the Kur attack that wiped out the other Serpoians. Visually helps to differentiate him.
  • Shapeshifting: The gang's efforts to save him merge his body with some of Mr. Ludris's nanoskin tech. This grants Rokuro great control over his corpus, but also alienates him from the rest of the Serpoian uniformity.
  • Villains Out Shopping: Following the Space Globalist arc he gets a part-time job at a convenience store.

    Gig Workers

Gig Workers

Aliens under the employ of the Serpoians. They each have powers based around a human sport, such as sumo or boxing, and have a tendency to speak nonsense.

  • Chekhov's Classroom: Before they met the boxing Gig Worker, there was a lesson about how the mantis shrimp has the strongest punch in nature. When modified by a Serpoian, the boxing Gig Worker gains mantis shrimp properties.
  • The Flatwoods Monster: The first Gig Worker is a version of the Flatwoods Monster that looks like a huge sumo wrestler.
  • Flower Mouth: When a Serpo combines itself, the mantis shrimp Gig Worker, and the Nessie Gig Worker, the resulting creature can split its mouth open into four parts.
  • Logical Weakness: Sort of. They have to abide by the rules of the sport they’re themed after. For example, a sumo loses if his hand touches the floor so the Flatwoods Monster with a sumo theme starts disintegrating the moment his hand touches the floor. The Flatwoods Monster simply grows extra legs to prevent the rest of its body from hitting the floor.
  • We Have Reserves: According to the Serpoians, they have many Gig Workers and can easily replace them if one falls in battle.

    Monkey Alien

Monkey Alien

A monkey-like alien and self-proclaimed "genius space scientist" who attacks the school in an extra chapter.

  • Expy: Of Dr. Gori, from Spectreman.
  • Forced Transformation: His technology can transform humans into giant cans that he can control. The humans can apparently be extracted from the cans for dissection later.
  • Verbal Tic: He ends all of his sentences with "bro".

    Mr. Ludris
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ddd_ludris.png
A friend of Mr. Shrimp, a specialist in construction asked to help with rebuilding the temple after the Evil Eye Arc.
  • Famed In-Story: Said to be all knowing and all powerful by a Serpoian, to the point he is shocked Mr. Shrimp met him. Since he spends his time flying around and exploring the galaxy, meeting him even once is considered a miracle.
  • Shout-Out: He seems to be a walking Minecraft reference, given his blocky way of moving and how he gives out nanomachines, which just so happen to be in the shape of blocks.

    Kur/Space Globalists
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0091_018.png

An alien race of conquerors that intends to invade Earth. They travel from planet to planet, harvesting resources and engaging in massacres wherever they go. While they all seem to look different, in reality they are a race of Octopoid Aliens using Power Armor to engage in combat. Each suit of armor is made from a race they've eliminated from the galaxy.

  • Always a Bigger Fish: The invading forces that came in through the portal are no match against the Slit Mouthed Woman. Thus proving that in spite of their overwhelming technological advantage, the aliens are no match against the supernatural forces littered across Earth’s surface.
  • Ancient Astronauts: Implied, considering that a group of their suits resemble Haniwa and Dogū, possibly hinting at a connection between them and ancient Japan. It's ultimately zigzagged. The Space Globalists themselves have zero connection to humanity. However, the Sumerians, a race of aliens that the Space Globalists slaughtered and turned into weapons, are revealed to be distant relatives of humans, with the Space Globalists' armor being built in the image of the Sumerians' deities.
  • Arc Villain: Of the homonymous arc.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: One of them uses armor shaped like a massive praying mantis with Laser Blade claws. It can mode-switch into a water beetle form where it's even stronger and use venom.
  • Expressive Mask: The eyes on the leader's armor become slightly wider when Momo tricks him into warping her to his pocket dimension, allowing her to negate his spatial manipulation.
  • Force and Finesse: The Force to the Serpoians' Finesse. The Kur already have an armada set up to invade, their advance party is just a means to get it there. This proves their undoing, as the Kur discover what the Serpoians already knew: the Earth is full of spirits whose abilities can overcome any amount of physical force.
  • Manchild: The unnamed leader of the Kur's advance party is very petty and childish, throwing a tantrum when Momo destroys his suit and referring to it as his "thingy." He even gets into an argument with Kinta over whose building is bigger when the two of them fight while wielding skyscrapers.
  • Meaningless Villain Victory: Despite the heroes destroying most of the Kur's advance party, they still manage to bring in the rest of the fleet. Reiko then demonstrates why Earth has survived contact from hostile aliens by quickly destroying the armada single-handedly.
  • Octopoid Aliens: They look like cephalopods when removed from their armor.
  • Organic Technology: While their mech suits seem entirely mechanical, the mobile weapons factory that produces them, "Big Mama," is a living thing that eats people and excretes mechs.
  • No Name Given: We've yet to hear what they call themselves. Rokuro describes them as "space globalist", while the Serpoians collectively decide to call them "the Kur".
  • Planet Looters: They invade other planets to harvest the inhabitants to make into weapons. Current target: Earth. Previous target, the Sumerian planet Vamola escaped from.
  • Powered Armor: Members of the scouting party are equipped with durable, heavily armed exoskeletons.
  • Those Were Only Their Scouts: Though implied to be the Kur's strongest, the protagonist only ever fight the advance team. There's a proper armada out in space sufficient to invade the whole planet. Said teams' mission is to teleport the main fleet to Earth.
  • Too Spicy for Yog-Sothoth: After attempting to absorb all of Jiji's chi, one of them is overloaded to the point his head explodes.
  • Viler New Villain: To the Serpoians. Unlike the Serpoians, the Kur have no need to prey on other species, they just want fodder for their weaponry and openly consider everything theirs by right. And while the Serpoians seem to be planning an invasion of some unknown scale, the Kur are primed for total war against the Earth.
  • Villainous Breakdown: The leader of the Space Globalists completely loses his shit when Momo destroys his armor after tricking him into transporting her to his pocket dimension.
"WHAT IS YOURS IS MINE! EVERYTHING IS MINE!"
  • Zerg Rush: Downplayed, but still part of their scout strategy. They attack their targets with at least double the numbers of fighters they have. Each one of them is already strong, so it makes defeating them almost impossible. When the heroes have to fight them, they start prioritizing taking down them one at a time, with the intention of making it easier to defeat the others in response to such strategy.

    Defective Clones
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ddd_defective_clones.jpg
Clones of the Serpoians reprogrammed by the Space Globalists, acting as an army for them.

Cryptid

    Mongolian Death Worm

Mongolian Death Worm

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ddd_earthworm.jpg
A giant earthworm cryptid lurking underneath a volcano town and fed sacrifices by the Kito family, who worship it as a god.

    Subterraneans
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ddd_subterranian.jpg
Strange inhuman subterranean beings. We've seen very little of them so far, but one of them has declared revenge on Momo for plot-related reasons.
  • Human Disguise: In contrast to the Serpoians' eerily identical apperances, the subterraneans use convincing, if creepy, human skins. They seem to prefer unremarkable middle-aged appearances, as seen with their Kito Family disguises.

Other

    Count Saint-Germain

Count Saint-Germain / Sanjome

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ddn_count.png
A mysterious figure, somehow allied to the Kur.
  • The Ageless: He has the appearance of a young man, but he's been alive since at least the 18th century. Turbo Granny of all people outright refers to him as a geezer.
  • Ambiguously Evil: He seems to be allied with the Space Globalists, who want to take over Earth. He's also shown giving up his seat to an old lady on the subway, making his actual morality pretty unclear.
  • Eye-Dentity Giveaway: He has noticeable Tsurime Eyes, which makes it clear to the audience he's the one serving as Zuma's Mysterious Backer.
  • Historical Domain Character: He's the historical Count Saint-Germain, although here he's a space-traveling immortal psychic.
  • Perception Filter: He is capable of manipulating his surroundings so people will think that he is just another teacher who has been teaching at the school for a while, even though he just appeared one day.
  • Sinister Silhouettes: How he appears in Zuma's memories, as his Perception Filter actively stops people from remembering his face.

Other Characters

    Kito Family

Kito Family

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ddd_kito.png
A family living in a small hot spring town who worship a snake god and regularly sacrifice newcomers to it.
  • Calling Your Attacks: The Kito matriarch shouts "Jennifer! Lopez! ANACONDA!" when performing an attack.
  • Cult: They worship a Cryptid that they mistake for a snake god, and have been secretly sacrificing people living on the house on the hill to it for years.
  • Dragon Their Feet: Even after Momo kills the Mongolian Death Worm that they worship, they continue to attack her.
  • Eaten Alive: The Death Worm eats them when they try to offer Momo, Okarun, and Jiji as sacrifices. Though they manage to escape its corpse after Momo tricks it into committing suicide in the sun.
  • Enemy Mine: The Kito Matriarch, Naki, teams up with Momo and Manjiro to fight the Evil Eye, realizing that he will kill all of them regardless.
  • Eternal Villain: The perm-wearing Kito matriarch has been present at the Kitos' sacrificial ceremonies for centuries, based on the Evil Eye's memories.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: In addition to attacking Momo in the hotsprings, the men who beat Jiji and Okarun are stripped to their loincloths.
  • Jerkass: Even putting aside the fact that they're a cult who sacrifices people to a giant worm, the Kito Family is pretty much written to be as unlikable as possible.
  • Mundane Horror: They're only ordinary, somewhat strong humans, but are by far the scariest antagonists in the series up to that point. Subverted at the end of the Mongolian Death Worm arc when it's revealed that they're actually all Subterraneans.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Some men from the Kito Family try to rape Momo in a public bath. Unlike the Serpoians who tried the same due to some weird biology, these guys are just massive creeps.
