Arlo and Company

    As a whole
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/8474c2cb_5fda_492a_90e0_ece77e45ea57.png
Clockwise from lower left: Arlo, Furlecia, Alia, Bertie, Marcellus and Tony.

  • Beauty, Brains, and Brawn:
    • Furlecia's the beauty; she's The Fashionista who always dresses and acts feminine.
    • Bertie's the brains; she's the most rational of the group, serving as the voice of reason when things fly off the handle.
    • Alia's the brawn; she's the tough and fiesty tomboy who's always distracted.
  • Color-Coded Characters: Each of them is represented by a specific color according to their skin and clothing. Arlo is yellow-green, Bertie is off-white, Alia is orange and red, Furlecia is pink, Tony is white and forest green, and Marcellus is aqua blue.
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: All except Alia have little wrinkles under their eyes like most other characters, with Arlo's and Marcellus's being the most noticeable. Bertie's don't show as much unlike the others.
  • Family of Choice: To Arlo. They love and support him to the point he realizes they're all misfits like he is, and ultimately decides to live with them instead of Ansel.
  • Five-Token Band: An example played with species. Arlo's a Half-Human Hybrid with the appearance and skills of an alligator, Bertie's a giantess, Furlecia's a puffball with humanoid arms and legs, Alia's a Catgirl, Tony's a rat-elf, and Marcellus's a reverse merman.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble:
    • Sanguine: Arlo and Alia. He's the optimistic and fun-loving leader and founder, while she is always on the move and fiesty.
    • Choleric: Tony and Furlecia: He often has a bit of a short-attention span, while she's often aloof and narcisstic.
    • Melancholic: Marcellus. He's the most moody of the gang, and is often considered their pessimist.
    • Phlegmatic: Bertie. She's more calm and in tune with the others, and serves as the most level-headed member.
  • Funny Animal: Half the gang is made up of a human boy who looks like an alligator, a fish man who's more likely a reverse merman, and a tigress who acts human as well. Often they tend to display their species' traits from time to time as well.
  • Gender-Equal Ensemble: Arlo, Tony and Marcellus are the boys, while Bertie, Furlecia and Alia are the girls.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: They are split between this half-and-half:
    • Nice: Arlo and Bertie
    • Mean: Marcellus and Furlecia
    • In-Between: Tony and Alia
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: All of them have a specific disability in any way. Arlo is a half-alligator outcast, Bertie is oversized and overweight and is The Drifter, Alia Drives Like Crazy, Tony is The Napoleon, Furlecia is flamboyant and vain, and Marcellus has a fear of children.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni:
    • Hyperactive and excitable Arlo (red) to sensitive and sensible Bertie (blue). This is even helped by the wallpapers of the conjoined living rooms of their shared house; Arlo's half of the room is orange, while Bertie's half is blue.
    • Hot-headed and fast-talking Tony (red) to sullen and collected Marcellus (blue).
    • Fiesty and tomboyish Alia (red) to flamboyant and posh girly girl Furlecia (blue).
  • Token Minority: Tony is obviously Italian. Arlo may be African given his accent, while Alia acts more Asian.
  • Town Girls: Furlecia's the Femme, Alia's the Butch, and Bertie's the Neither.
  • True Companions: All of them respect each other.

    Arlo Beauregard

"I'll rise up beyond these walls!"
Voiced by: Michael J. Woodard

A 15-year old alligator boy, and the main protagonist. Upon learning that his father is from New York City, he goes on a journey to find him. An optimistic soul with a major ear for music, Arlo wants nothing more than friendship and acceptance. And he's going to need friends if he's to navigate an unfamiliar and often cynical world.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: He was this toward the animals of the swamp during his life living there.
  • All-Loving Hero: Eternally optimistic and accepting toward everyone he meets, and is proud to accept his misfit friends the way they are.
  • Animal Eyes: While having normal Cartoony Eyes like everyone else, he tends to get slitted pupils like a real alligator when surprised or angered, like when Bertie disturbs him when he got a bad mood from her, and when he is startled by Ol' Bessie's old operator.
  • Animal Facial Hair: He has two small strips of hair on his chin, something inherited from his father.
  • Animals Hate Him: Most likely due to his alligator appearance, the animals in the swamp, sans Jeromio, do not like him. It didn't help that he tended to be more than a bit clingy due to his loneliness.
  • Artistic License – Biology: Given he's half-alligator, he tends to possess specific inaccuracies with his real life species:
    • He can swim in both fresh and salt water, when in real life, alligators are mostly active in freshwater because their salt glands aren't as strong.
    • He sheds his entire skin from the jaw to the tail; alligators can shed, albeit scale by scale rather than all the way down.
    • He can sweat in hot weather like in "Stay Cool"; real alligators don't sweat.
  • Barefoot Cartoon Animal: Arlo wears a shirt and pants, but no shoes.
  • Beautiful Singing Voice: Arlo's main talent is his passion for singing and making music, especially the former. Bertie is captivated by it during their first encounter, while Marcellus is often annoyed by it. It even helps that he was voiced by a former American Idol contestant.
  • Birthday Beginning: Arlo's adventure — from when he discovers he's from New York City and travels there to reunite with his father while making friends — begins on his fifteenth birthday.
  • A Birthday, Not a Break: Arlo is celebrating his fifteenth birthday at the beginning of the movie, and that's when he discovers he was abandoned at birth, Edmée adopted him, and he's really from New York.
  • Blithe Spirit: No matter who it may be, Arlo seems to bring out the best in everyone he comes across. This includes the main cast, total strangers, and even the bad guys to a degree.
  • Break the Cutie:
    • Arlo took Ansel disowning him rather hard, as it was enough to send him into a deep Heroic BSoD and lament over his journey being all for nothing.
    • In "Moody Tuesday", his acquisition of Bertie's bad mood suffers the worst, as Bertie turning down a song from him is enough to cause his spirits to fall completely, and by the time Bertie goes to apologize, he's constantly grumpy and angered.
  • BSoD Song:
    • "Wash the Hurt Away" from the movie, as he laments over Ansel rejecting and disowning him.
    • "The Way" starts like this before turning into a Friendship Song with Bertie.
  • Buffy Speak: He briefly calls a car a "land boat", given his minimal outside world experience. He also calls the shell he gives Bertie a "best friend rock".
  • Catchphrase: "Rickety biscuit(s)!" Fittingly, those were the very first words he heard.
  • Character Development: Becomes more accepting of his birth home throughout the first season, with the addition of learning to be more responsible. Culminates in "The Uncondemning" when he realizes the swamp will always be part of where he's going, and the destruction of Edmée's shack aka his old home symbolizes he has finally moved on.
  • Character Tics: Wiggles his tail rather quickly when excited or curious about something. Also his snout tends to droop like an elephant's trunk if he's depressed enough.
  • Cheated Angle: The large tuft of bangs that sticks out across his forehead faces away from the camera almost the entire time. Whenever Arlo turns his head, the bangs flip from one side to the other. It even happens when viewed from the front.
  • Comical Angry Face: He uses one on Bertie in "Moody Tuesday" when she checks up on him in a bad mood, complete with slitted pupils and realistic hissing.
  • Coming of Age Story: The first part of the film focuses on Arlo living in the swamp until his fifteenth birthday, where he leaves for New York to find his father and learns to appreciate himself.
  • Country Mouse: In contrast with just about everyone being city folk, Arlo's whole world used to begin and end with the swamp. This causes no shortage of mishaps when he first enters Willow Button.
  • Distressed Dude:
    • Becomes this in the final third of the movie thanks to getting caught by Ruff and Stucky at the Met Gala.
    • Falls victim again in the Season 1 finale thanks to being captured and hypnotized by the Bog Lady.
  • Does Not Like Spam: He absolutely HATES eating snails.
  • Doorstep Baby: Abandoned as an infant, Arlo was left in the sewers and floated all the way to the doorstep of Edmée's swamp shack, where she adopted him and raised him.
  • Expressive Hair: The protruding thin hairs at the back of Arlo's head become jagged and zigzag-like when under a G-Rated Drug from eating sweets.
  • Eye Color Change:
    • When under the effects of a sugar rush in Willow Button, Arlo's eyes briefly turn deep pink.
    • When Arlo is about to shed, his eyes turn pale blue and his pupils become faded.
  • Eyes Never Lie: Invoked during "Something's Missing" as Arlo asks Ansel to look into his eyes and recognize him as his son.
  • Family Eye Resemblance: He and Ansel share the same oval eye design, which Arlo invokes upon him during "Something's Missing".
  • Fatal Flaw: As demonstrated in the series, impulsiveness. More than a few times, Arlo will make swift decisions without getting the big picture first. It's at it's worst in "Going It Arlone", with him determined to try and fix Old Bessie despite everyone and everything telling him it's a bad idea.
  • Feet-First Introduction: How we first meet him in the present day at the start of the film.
  • Forgotten Phlebotinum: "Jeromio, Jeromio" shows Arlo locating Jeromio by standing still and closing his eyes before listening carefully for his croaking miles away, but he hasn't used said skill since that episode.
  • Fish out of Water: Has spent most of his life in a swamp and thus struggles to fit in the outside world. He doesn't even know what cars or mail boxes are.
  • Friendless Background: As a result of living in the Louisiana swamp alone with his adoptive parent.
  • Furry Reminder: He can swim really fast, is a Big Eater, and can run on all fours, like a real alligator. Also, he sheds frequently, albeit his entire skin rather than just scale by scale. He also hisses when mad, and has a strong bite force.
  • Gene Hunting: His main mission is to find his long-lost father.
  • Genki Guy: Comes with the territory, with him being a Wide-Eyed Idealist.
  • Gleeful and Grumpy Pairing: The gleeful to Marcellus' grumpy; he's the nicest of the gang who always brings out the good side of things.
  • G-Rated Drug: Candy and ice cream, in his case. If he eats so much, expect a sugar rush.
  • Green Gators: Has green skin with a yellowish green muzzle.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: He's half-human, half-alligator.
  • Hammerspace: Tends to take his signature box guitar out of nowhere when he needs it.
  • Happily Adopted: Arlo has lived with Edmée in the swamp his whole life, and loves her all the same.
  • Hayseed Name: Arlo's surname, Beauregard, evokes the Cajun French type.
  • Heroic Bastard: Highly implied. Ansel didn't seem to know Arlo existed until after he was already born, and it's highly unlikely Ansel was married given Arlo's mother was implied to be even less human than he was.
  • Heroic BSoD:
    • Getting rejected by Ansel and being disowned by him is enough to reduce Arlo to depression until his friends help him regain hope.
    • He has another one in "Friendship Couch" when it dawns on him that he's going to be living by himself in Seaside. It's briefer than the last one thanks to Bertie merging their homes together.
    • An even briefer one occurs in "The Shedding" when he hides his skin from the others in a dumpster. Marcellus' words of encouragement are the ticket this time.
  • Heroic Second Wind: In "The Uncondemning", not only does Bertie and Alia calling out to him releases him from the Bog Lady's trance, he also gains enough strength and determination to bite free of her grasp and break Edmée's cage, freeing her.
  • A Hero Is Born: He was first introduced abandoned in the sewers as a newborn baby.
  • Hypnotize the Captive: He is hypnotized by the Bog Lady into not leaving the swamp in "The Uncondeming" so she can keep him in her grasp forever.
  • I Choose to Stay: In the end, Arlo decides to stay in New York City permanently and even restores Seaside by the Seashore with his gang. He also decides to stay with them in a house of their own near the boardwalk rather than Ansel's penthouse, but the two plan to visit each other often.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: Sheltered in a swamp his entire life, Arlo dreamed of going outside the swamp but was not allowed to exceed his borders. By the time he learned of his past on his fifteenth birthday, he finally left the swamp and set off for New York.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: He basically wanted the animals of the swamp to like him, but nobody except Jeromio and Edmée would want to be around an alligator who's half-human. Best exemplified in his song "More More More".
  • Ink-Suit Actor: Seems to borrow a few elements of Michael J. Woodard, specifically the chin hairs and wide cheekbones.
  • Innocently Insensitive: He can be this at times, such as in "Community Garden"; he is blissfully unaware that inviting everyone to get planting in the vacant lot is undermining Bertie's "quiet time".
  • "I Want" Song:
    • In the movie, he has two of them: "More More More" is about him wanting to have friends, while "Beyond These Walls" is about his desire to see the outside world and find his one true home in New York.
    • "Back To You" in the Season 1 finale as he vows to do whatever he can to save Edmée from her ransom trap.
  • Kiddie Kid: Despite being a teenager, his isolation from any peers his age has resulted in him having the mindset of an optimistic ten-year old.
  • Luminescent Blush: His cheeks have a little blush in them.
  • Meaningful Name: The name Arlo has multiple meanings, usually Greek for "strong, brave, courageous one," which is what Arlo is.
  • Melismatic Vocals: When he sings.
  • Messy Hair: Has a rather disheveled red hairdo which represents his hyper-activeness and excitement.
  • Mind-Control Eyes: Gets these in the Season 1 finale when under the Bog Lady's spell.
  • A Minor Kidroduction: The first we see of Arlo is him as a newborn in the sewers of New York the night of his birth, getting swept out to sea and floating all the way to the swamp where Edmée takes him in.
  • Minor Living Alone: Played straight then subverted in the first episode. He doesn't want to live by himself when he moves to Seaside, but everyone's too occupied to want to move in with him, and Bertie has her own space. After it becomes too much for him, he and Bertie merge their places together.
  • Missing Mom: Although he knows who his father is, he has no idea who or where his mom has gone. It's heavily implied near the beginning that she's no longer around. Her whereabouts have yet to be mentioned in the show.
  • Naked People Are Funny: Whenever he strips himself and goes completely alligator-nude. The part in the movie when he strips during a Heroic BSoD, however, is not played for laughs.
  • Never Smile at a Crocodile: Averted. Arlo is by and large the most approachable of the cast.
  • Nice Guy: The sweetest character, bar none. Notably, when first meeting his new friends he never judges them for their unusual appearance.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: Nice to Marcellus' mean and Tony's in-between. He's the friendliest of the group and accepts them for who they are, and always makes the best of things.
  • Non-Mammalian Hair: Has a full head of red scruffy hair.
  • No Social Skills: Living your whole life with animals and a swamp hermit will do no wonders for your ability to interact with the world. Then again, with how nice and selfless he is, social skills aren't necessary most of the time. He seems to have gotten a bit better at it in the series.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When he caught Bertie's bad mood upon being refused a song from her, he becomes so angry and upset to the point he refuses to sing.
  • Older Than They Look: His innocent personality and short stature can make him appear younger than he is- he's actually fifteen.
  • Passing the Torch: Receives one from Ansel when he lets him and his friends live in his old Brooklyn home, Seaside by the Seashore. He even restores it and reopens it.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Bertie. She's the closest to him out of all of his friends, but it's more like a brother/sister relationship if anything.
  • Prehensile Tail: His tail, as shown in "Be the Turtle", can work as a third leg.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: His eyes tend to turn large and sparkly during his more emotional moments, such as when he's learning the truth of his heritage, when worrying over Furlecia during the wrestling match, and when he asks Ansel pleadingly to tell him once and for all if he's his dad.
  • Redhead in Green: Arlo is a green skinned alligator boy with red hair.
  • Running on All Fours: Tends to do this time to time, usually when sneaky, just like real alligators.
  • Scenery Censor: Largely averted whenever he's clotheless, as his alligator body does not have any serious parts; in the movie when Bertie reassures him though, his lower body is completely obscured.
  • Sewer Gator: His abandonment in the sewers as a baby is a nod to this. After Ansel denies being his father and pushes him away, Arlo takes off the new clothes he gave him, aimlessly wandering the streets until he stops on a bridge overlooking a lake in Central Park. He then jumps into it, drifting for a while before a current pulls him into the sewers through a grate.
  • Ship Tease: At first just a bit with Alia at the end of the film. In the series, especially "Be the Turtle", it's a lot more blatant.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Though his alligator appearance came out of the blue, he's a Half-Human Hybrid just like his half-bird father Ansel. Both he and Ansel also share the same oval eyes, pointed fingers, x-detailed earlobes, chin hairs, and jagged hair tips, while his puffy cheeks with Luminescent Blush and Youthful Freckles were inherited from when Ansel was a child. Arlo's red hair color came from his mother.
  • Sweet Tooth: Arlo's stomach is appropriately bottomless when it comes to sweets, seeing as how Edmée has a cake for him at all times in case of special occasions, as well as him scarfing down a lot of ice cream later (though a Mushroom Samba ensues after he does that).
  • That Reminds Me of a Song: He is prone to randomly burst into song about how he feels, whether in a bad mood, a sad mood, or even a happy mood. This actually refers to the movie's musical alternate universe; he even lampshades such to Bertie.
  • Thinking Tic: In "Jeromio, Jeromio", he wiggles as many body parts as he can to think. Thao sees it as "wild thrashing".
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Arlo leaving the swamp for New York in the first place is what angers the evil Bog Lady, who had been secretly protecting him all his life, thus unleashes a curse upon the swamp, kidnaps Edmée as bait, and hires Ruff and Stucky to lure Arlo back to the swamp with a ransom note so she can force him into staying.
  • Verbal Tic: He often tends to sing what he says, that is, when not during a song number. Also, he'll occasionally let out a very low chuckle after saying things.
  • Water Is Dry: Whenever Arlo comes out of the water after swimming, he shows little to no instances of being wet. In the case he does get wet, he dries off rather quickly.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: In "Memory of a Pizza", he dresses up like a ballerina to impress the mayor. No reason is given for this, but it probably doesn't matter for him.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: He is very optimistic and innocent due to his sheltered life in the swamp. This is also played with literally as he has the biggest eyes of the whole cast.
  • Wingding Eyes:
    • When Arlo begins to experience a sugar rush in Willow Button, his eyes become filled with fireworks. They later turn pink with stars in them when experiencing a Mushroom Samba.
    • In "Tony Baloney", Arlo gets hearts in his eyes when awing over Tony's makeover.
  • Youthful Freckles: He has sprinkles of freckles on his cheeks.

    Bertie
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ber.png
"Follow me home."
Voiced by: Mary Lambert

A positively huge teenage girl, and the first true friend Arlo makes. Although somewhat aloof and distant with people due to years of being judged for her looks, she's ultimately a kindhearted person more than willing to help Arlo on his quest. And may the Powers That Be help you if you bring harm to her friends...

  • Acrofatic: Despite being very heavyset, she's not only very strong but also surprisingly agile, and capable of leaping large distances In a Single Bound.
  • Action Girl: A capable fighter thanks to her strength and size.
  • Big Beautiful Woman: Combined with Brawn Hilda. Just like her voice actor, she's very chubby and very pretty.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Tender, yes, but also strong enough to lift a train car.
  • Big Damn Heroes: She is first introduced saving Arlo from the poachers at the train station.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Bertie is willing to protect Arlo from anyone who dares try and hurt him.
  • Brawn Hilda: Both played straight and downplayed: she's very heavyset and muscular albeit very beautiful, with a plain, chubby face.
  • Cool Big Sis: By the time she officially bonded with Arlo, she very starts to fill this role for Arlo. So much that by I Heart Arlo, it's made apparent that Bertie plays the most active role in taking care of Arlo to the point where they live together in the same house.
  • Cute Giant: Despite being the largest character in the film (even bigger than The Beast), she's rather sweet.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Due to her size, she was constantly rejected and/or viewed as a freak, causing her to lose her sense of belonging and become The Drifter.
  • A Day in the Limelight: "Frogday the 13th" and "Get Lost!" have Bertie as the central focus.
  • Deuteragonist: She has the second major role after Arlo.
  • The Drifter: She's never stayed long in any single place. However, she grows out of this by the end, preferring to stay with Arlo and her other new friends.
  • Expressive Accessory: When tired or worn out, the flower on her headband becomes limp and matted. When grossed out, the petals fold inward.
  • First Friend: She's the first person Arlo becomes friends with after leaving the swamp.
  • Flowers of Femininity: Has a flower on her headband, and has the soft and gentle personality to match. Arlo gives her another one at the end of the movie.
  • Gender-Blender Name: The only one of Arlo's crew with an apparently unisex name.
  • Gentle Giant: Not only does she have a huge size and height, but she also has a huge heart.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Bertie has two braided pigtails that compliments her sweetness quite well.
  • Girly Bruiser: While typically soft spoken and reserved, she's more than capable of destroying her competition.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: Despite being a teenager, or at the very least an older teen than Arlo, she's massive, perhaps one of the largest examples of this trope. She uses it to her advantage more than a few times.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: Bertie is a Big Beautiful Woman with brown hair, just like her voice actor, Mary Lambert (though, being a giant, Bertie is much taller than Lambert).
  • Luminescent Blush: Her cheeks have a little blush in them.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name is of old English origin for "noble".
  • Mysterious Past: Although we know that she was mocked for her size, not much is known about Bertie’s life before meeting Arlo. Like where she came from, who her parents are, or whatever happened to them.
  • Nice Girl: Despite a slightly gruff exterior, she never hesitates to stand for others.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: Nice to Furlecia's mean and Alia's in-between. She's a Gentle Giant who finds her place in the world thanks to Arlo.
  • Only Sane Man: Oftentimes the voice of reason, and the most apprehensive when anytime tries something crazy. That being said, she's Not So Above It All, as she believed that Arlo's shed skin was a ghost in "The Shedding" without even questioning it. And in "Stay Cool", she was completely on board with taking Ansel's yacht.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Arlo.
  • Singing Voice Dissonance: Her voice gets slightly softer and more higher-pitched when singing.
  • Token Human: Unlike her friends, she 100% human, even if an unusually big and strong one.
  • Writer's Block: Suffers this in "Get Lost!".
  • Youthful Freckles: Has freckles on her cheeks.

    Teeny Tiny Tony
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ton_7.png
"Why don't you get the fact that we were about to be rich and your kid messed it all up?!"
Voiced by: Tony Hale

A small Italian person who looks like a cross between a man and a rat. Tony and his motley crew have been traveling from place to place looking for a quick buck, though his success has been somewhat minimal. A bit on the short-tempered side, he knows his way around the more sketch aspects of life, and has a strict rule to never leave a man behind.

  • Calling the Old Man Out: Chews out both his parents after everything he does fails to impress them in "Tony Baloney", proudly declaring his love for his legit business.
  • Cartoon Creature: It's really hard to pinpoint what exactly Tony is. He has the overall look of a person, but he has pointed ears, as well as the buck teeth and tail (with a tuft of hair at the end) of a rat, and is also rat-sized. His design may or may not be an obscure reference to The Littles. He also hails from a place called Little Italy, which might be more than just a shout-out to certain real life enclaves.
    • The series reveals that he's simply a rat man, and got most of his looks from his mother's side.
  • Catchphrase: "Ba-gooh-ma mia!"
  • Cheated Angle: Similar to Arlo, the curvy bangs in Tony's hair constantly flip from one side to the other whenever he turns his head, complete with his hat changing position as well. This did not happen as much in the movie.
  • A Day in the Limelight: "Tony Baloney" has him as the focus, as well as his family.
  • Ear Notch: His right ear has a small chunk of it chopped out.
  • Friend in the Black Market: Apparently has connections all over New York in order to get information. This is put into practice in both the movie and the series.
  • Greed: A very downplayed trope, yes, but one of his biggest motivations when doing anything is the money he might get from it. It's nowhere near as destructive as Marcellus' greed, but still.
  • Invisible Parents: As of now, he's the only one in Arlo's gang other than Arlo himself who has parents brought up, having mentioned them living in Little Italy which is also in New York.
    • Averted in "Tony Baloney", in which his parents drop in for a visit.
  • It Runs in the Family: "Tony Baloney" reveals Tony comes from a long line of con artists, and similar jobs like that. And apparently, he's the White Sheep.
  • Luminescent Blush: Has a small tinge of blush in his cheeks and ear points.
  • Mister Big: Unmistakably the leader of his crew, and also the shortest person in the cast.
  • The Napoleon: To some degree. He's not explicitly a jerk or egotistical (though he does have his moments), but he's got a fierce temper.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: In-between to Arlo's nice and Marcellus' mean. He's a rambunctious little fellow who has quite a sense of humor when he needs it.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Resembles his mother dead-on, but got his Pointy Ears and curled hair tuft from his father.
  • Pointy Ears: Has these, hence being a rodent.
  • Rambunctious Italian: Loud? Dressed in overalls? A big mustache? Loves pizza? Explicitly mentions his love of Little Italy by name? Yup.
  • Ship Tease: With Furlecia.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Pizza. He even opens up his own restaurant at the end of the film.
  • White Sheep: To his criminal family.

    Furlecia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fur.png
"Oh, excuse me? Would you have time to squeeze me in for a blowout?"
Voiced by: Jonathan Van Ness

Your guess is as good as ours on the subject of what exactly Furlecia is. The best we got is an elastic bright-pink furball with arms, legs, a face, and an attitude. Although a bit on the vain side of things, she won't hesitate to lend a helping hand.

  • Action Girl: Despite her effeminate personality, she can put up a decent fight, especially when she works as an amateur wrestler for Tony.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Furlecia is a pink furball with Girlish Pigtails and high heels, but also a mustache and a masculine voice. She is identified as a girl by everyone else, so it is heavily implied that she is Transgender.
  • Badass Boast: "Don't you threaten me with a good time, honey!"
  • Bad Hair Day: "Blow Out" has her losing all of her hair due to work-related stress.
  • Camp Gay: A lot of her mannerisms scream this.
  • Cartoon Creature: Even more so than Tony.
  • Cool Big Sis: Sees herself as Alia's "fur sister". Sure enough, they're quite close to one another.
  • A Day in the Limelight: "Blow Out" is about her.
  • The Fighting Narcissist: When in a combat situation, she's this in spades.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She wears her hair in a pair of pigtails, emphasizing her feminine nature.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: She gets comically stabbed in her "love handles" by a rake during her introductory scene.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: Tends to share a few of Van Ness's features. specifically sharing the same "furstache" as him, and her nails are modeled almost similar to Van Ness's in real life.
  • Larynx Dissonance: Despite her feminine appearance, she has a masculine voice.
  • Married to the Job: "Blow Out" shows that she's so committed to her job as a hairdresser that she's accumulated over 9999 customers in the queue, giving her almost no time at all to herself. This ends up costing her hard when the stress of it all causes her mind to unravel and her hair to completely fall off.
  • Master of Disguise: "The Uncondemning" has her display an uncanny ability to blend in to her environement, even if a picture-perfect copy of Tony doesn't have much purpose in a swamp.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: Mean to Bertie's nice and Alia's in-between. She's a tough fuzzball who would pick a fight with anyone, but also has her soft moments.
  • The Noseless: She is one of two members of the gang with no visible nose.
  • Pink Means Feminine: She's a bright pink hairball with exaggeratedly effeminate behavior.
  • Rubber Man: Her arms are rather stretchy. This comes in handy on more than one occasion.
  • Sassy Black Woman: She's sassy, and has dark-skinned humanoid arms and legs.
  • Ship Tease: With Tony.
  • Tempting Fate: In "The Shedding", she boastfully calls herself flawless when everyone notes a gross thing about themselves to cheer up Arlo. Two episodes later, "Blow Out" proves this to be very wrong.
  • Tender Tomboyishness, Foul Femininity: The aloof and vain foul femininity to Alia's tender tomboyishness.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The vain and tough girly girl to Alia's tomboy.
  • Wrestler in All of Us: During her tenure as Tony's ace in the hole in amateur wrestling, Furlecia shows great skill and strength in the ring.

    Alia

"Like a turtle, slow walk to the bay now!"
Voiced by: Haley Tju

If you ever need someone to drive, never EVER let Alia take the wheel. Easily distracted and a bit too energetic for her own good, this tiger girl with a learner's permit is more than likely to swerve the car in every possible direction except forward. Amazingly, she's still a capable driver, and just as amicable as the rest of Tony's crew.

  • Animal Jingoism: At the beginning of "The Shedding", she attacks some pigeons perching on the fountain. She later describes the act as "dispensing street justice to some ne'er-do-wells".
    • Lampshades this in "Get Lost!", stating that by logic, she and the Rat King should be enemies, though she doesn't feel that way (initially, at least).
  • Artistic License – Biology: Despite being a tiger, she acts pretty much like a normal housecat, given that she emits meowing. She also purrs, which tigers cannot do.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!:
    • Alia can be a little distracted sometimes. Actually, there's rarely a time where she isn't. For starters, there's a cat toy right next to the steering wheel, which does no favors on the road. Considering many cats have short attention spans, it's somewhat justified.
    • This extends to the series as her major Fatal Flaw, as she keeps getting sidelined by just about everything for even the simplest of tasks. Even after Arlo gives her advice, she still has to try extremely hard to remain focused.
  • Blessed with Suck: Her Super-Senses are impressive, but in Tony's words, she has the attention span of a fruit fly on caffeine as a result.
  • Catgirl: A tiger, specifically; though her Furry Reminder behavior is less tiger-like and more cat-like.
  • Costume Evolution: in the TV show, she swapped her gray skirt for pink skirt.
  • Cute Little Fangs: She has these, hence being a feline.
  • A Day in the Limelight: She gets the spotlight in "Be the Turtle".
  • Drives Like Crazy: Like you wouldn't believe. Amazingly, not once does the car get totally wrecked by her constant swerving. It does get towed for a while, though, and it was enough to get the whole gang banned from Canada.
  • Facial Markings: She has two small off-white spots between her eyes.
  • Furry Reminder: Gets distracted by everything, hates sprayed water, curls up in her sleep, sifts through trash, and hisses when mad.
  • Genki Girl: Shows shades of this, especially when excited. Naturally, it leads to troubles on the road.
  • Heroic BSoD: Briefly breaks down in tears when it seems that her attention span is a lost cause. Thankfully, Arlo comes up with a solution.
  • Innocently Insensitive: At one point she goes off on how Arlo's shed skin (which she thinks is a ghost) is one of the most messed up things she's ever seen while he's still in earshot. Of course, once she realizes the truth, she's the first to reassure him that they all have a couple gross habits, so it's all good.
  • In the Hood: Almost never seen without her large red hoodie.
  • Kids Driving Cars: She appears to be around the same age as Arlo, and is the group's bus driver. She's capable, but only to the extent that she doesn't crash into everything.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name means "high" and "exalted" in Hebrew. Coincidentally, she's tomboyish and hyper.
  • Never Bareheaded: The only time we see her without her hood is when she's running a Taxi boat as a one-off gag. She even puts hats on over the hood, and wears a hooded wetsuit for swimming.
  • Nice Girl: A bit hyper and absent-minded, but otherwise a good person.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: In-between to Bertie's nice and Furlecia's mean. She's the hyperactive tomboy of the group who Drives Like Crazy, but is also a friendly person.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Alia is the most recognizable of Arlo's crew, given that she's more fully animal than half animal like Arlo and Marcellus. She's also the only one of the gang who doesn't have small wrinkles under her eyes like the others.
  • Red Is Heroic: She wears a red hoodie at all times.
  • Ship Tease: A very minor case with Arlo. Most prominently near the end, in which he puts a flower on her hood. While he did the same with Bertie, Alia seemed a lot more eager.
    • Come the series, and it goes from "minor" to "practically EVERYWHERE", especially in "Be The Turtle".
  • Super-Senses: She has increased senses which allows her to see, hear, and even smell things no one else can. That being said, see Blessed with Suck above.
  • Tender Tomboyishness, Foul Femininity: She's the tender tomboy who's always on the move and cheerful, compared to Furlecia's foul femininity.
  • The Stoner: Several jokes are made about her carrying catnip around at all times, with her reactions to people pointing out being similar to being caught with marijuana. In "Community Garden", she's pretty high on it for most of the episode.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The feisty, hot-headed and brash tomboy to Furlecia's girly girl.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Despite being a very energetic and brash tomboy who Drives Like Crazy, she wears a pink skirt in the show.

    Marcellus

"While impossible in the heat of the day, my precious scales would wither away. But if I ascend into the coolness of the night, the moon can light my way! Perhaps, yes, perhaps... I will survive!"
Voiced by: Brett Gelman

Marcellus isn't the most approachable of Tony's crew, though that might have something to do with being locked up in the Aquarium of the Carolinas for a time. It's not known how long this poor fish-person was there, but what we do know is that it messed him up to a degree. Naturally, it's made him a bit bitter, but not enough to make him a total jerk, at least.

  • Ambiguously Bi: Marcellus apparently has the habit of flirting with both women and men. He more than once flirted with Bertie but he also seemingly hits on Tony in “The Shedding” by making a flirtatious comment on Tony’s night sweats during the group hug and rubbing his back.
  • Atrocious Alias: As seen on a brief screen in Times Square, he is known as Fish Flops to the public. Try saying that with a straight face.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Has the thickest eyebrows out of the main cast.
  • Casanova Wannabe: He picks up a tendency to flirt with other people often in the series, including Bertie. However he gets constantly turned down.
  • Child Hater: After being stuck in that aquarium for so long, Marcellus has developed this mindset, believing that Kids Are Cruel. With the exception of Arlo and Alia, he menaces/berates every kid he comes across.
Children are monsters, ALL OF THEM.
  • The Cynic: The most likely to complain about anything.
  • A Day in the Limelight: He gets his share of the spotlight in "Make a Fish".
  • Disney Death: Almost dies from dehydration in "Make a Fish" until Bertie saves him.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: His PTSD regarding his time in the aquarium is reminiscent of an escaped convict freaking out over his time in prison.
    • There is also his status as a sea creature who loathed his time in captivity. It brings to mind how some intelligent marine animals, particularly orcas, often crack under the pressure of being confined the way they are.
  • Fish People: A reverse merman creature. Fittingly, he shows all mannerisms of a fish, and is fine breathing water and air.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: He isn't that well-liked by the rest of the group except Arlo. Considering his personality, it's justified.
  • Furry Reminder: Sleeps with his eyes open. Also, he cannot survive outside of water for too long.
  • Funny Animal: A fish person with a human torso and legs. A Freeze-Frame Bonus identifies him as a "Merman".
  • Gleeful and Grumpy Pairing: The grumpy to Arlo's gleeful; he's the more cynical and moody member of the gang who's apparently a Child Hater.
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: Wears only a speedo.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite his Musical Number Annoyance with Arlo, he actually enjoys singing opera in his spare time.
  • Jerkass: Easily the most mean-spirited and rude of Arlo's friends. Most of his time is spend making jabs at others or even doing things at their expense. The opening to "Make A Fish" shows this in detail. That being said...
    • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite being a rather rude and cynical Child Hater, he is very loyal to his friends, and even thanks Arlo for rescuing him.
    • Shown again in the series a couple of times, notably in "The Shedding" where he lifts Arlo's spirits by talking with him about embarrassing bodily habits. That being said, he milks this fact a bit more than what's necessary.
  • Logical Weakness: Cannot survive for too long outside of water, though this only seems to be a real problem in "Make a Fish".
  • Nice Mean And In Between: Mean to Arlo's nice and Tony's in-between. He's the more hotheaded member of the group who hates children and has the most struggle out of them.
  • The Noseless: Has no visible nose, hence being a fish.
  • Moment Killer: He manages to interrupt two rather emotionally uplifting scenes with Arlo and the others. Twice. In the same scene.
  • Musical Number Annoyance: Gets irritated at Arlo's constant singing.
  • Never Going Back to Prison: A variant. It was an aquarium, but he never wants anything to do with it anymore.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Getting broken out of the aquarium by Arlo.
  • Our Mermaids Are Different: Identified as a Merman on a screen in Times Square, he is an illustration of the common "inverted mermaid" conceived to address the Mermaid Problem.
  • Ship Tease: If you can believe it, with Bertie. Then again, he also shows great attraction to Tony and a bust of Ansel.
  • Sleeps with Both Eyes Open: Has a habit of sleeping this way, hence being a fish as that's what they do. Arlo notices this.
  • Sticky Fingers: Nowhere near to the extent of his former neighbor Lily, but occasionally he'll take the time to steal something because he can. It actually saves everyone in "The Uncondemning" when he takes a shining to a swamp boat.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: The only thing he wears is a speedo. Humorously, it's only at the Met Gala where he feels underdressed.
    • In the series, his justification for wearing this is because he both can't be bothered to buy pants ever, and also because he's proud of his body and not afraid to show it.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Has an extreme phobia of children due to the amount of time he spent in the aquarium.

Inhabitants of New York City

Arlo's family

    Ansel T. Beauregard
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vlcsnap_2021_09_02_01h55m21s671.png
"What could be better than to be in the blue?"
Click here to see his original appearance:

Arlo's father, and a successful businessman. His aim is to take his old home, Seaside by the Seashore, and destroy it so that he can build a more modern city on top of it. But there's more to this man than meets the eye...

  • All of the Other Reindeer: All the children at the boardwalk teased him over being a bird-man, prompting him to conceal himself.
  • Ambiguously Absent Parent: When Ansel talks about his past growing up in Seaside by the Seashore, his parents were neither mentioned nor appear in the flashback. In fact he left by himself to become a success in the city with no adult supervision. Judging by his flashback in "Swamp Itch", though, he at least had a mom, but she didn't pay much attention to him.
  • Animal Motifs: Birds. His physical appearance is like a woodpecker (right down to the haircut), his penthouse is full of bird-related artwork, his song brings up "a phoenix from the ashes" and his "perch", his gala costume has lots of feathers, and above all, he's got bird wings and legs, completing the image.
  • Anti-Villain: Does not have the best intentions for anyone when we first see him, but at the same time, he's not totally malicious. If anything, he's rather terrible at being a Corrupt Corporate Executive.
  • Being Evil Sucks: Especially if it means hiding your heritage, working alongside the rich elite who originally hated you, and abandoning your child out of fear of your past being discovered.
  • Beneath the Mask: Behind all the wealth and fame, he's a rather insecure and lonely man who couldn't move on from his childhood trauma.
  • Big Damn Reunion: When he and Arlo officially reunite.
  • Break the Haughty: Seeing Arlo get caught and taken away by Ruff and Stucky is what causes Ansel to finally "break himself" and realize how self-absorbed and neglectful he's become.
  • Broken Ace: Became an incredibly successful (if somewhat under-confident) Self-Made Man, but at the cost of hiding from his old home, his true self, and his family.
  • Broken Pedestal: The instant Arlo finds out Ansel was only distracting him from what's important and hurtfully turns him away, he loses hope and temporarily no longer considered him his dad.
  • Bumbling Dad: Played with. He's by no means dumb or incompetent, but he's almost never at Seaside, and he doesn't seem to quite grasp how to bond with his son very well. He gets better as the series progresses.
  • Character Development: Ansel learns to appreciate his son for who he is, get over hiding his true self, and to appreciate his true form as well.
  • Clothing Reflects Personality: Before hiding his birdman self, Ansel had his wings and bird legs perpetually exposed, showing his freedom despite being ridiculed. After he decided to disguise himself, he always wore long pants to cover his bird legs and stood on fake shoes with perches, and hid his wings under jackets and coats, which represents himself becoming a Self-Made Man and becoming too powerful with himself. After reuniting with Arlo and revealing his true self, he once again has his wings and bird legs exposed, showing he's no longer suppressed and is now a caring person.
  • Costume Evolution: Come the start of the show, Ansel has swapped out the stuffy business look with a new base outfit that's casual and relaxing, almost similar to Arlo's and near-resembling the outfit he wore as a child. Specifically he wears a white t-shirt with a pink pullover tied around the neck, allowing his wings to be permanently exposed, and has traded his dress pants for shorts so he can show his bird legs.
  • Community-Threatening Construction: Initially planned to demolish his old hometown of Seaside by the Seashore and replace it with a city expansion; thanks to Arlo redeeming him, he ultimately decides against it.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Ansel grew up in Seaside by the Seashore, but faced constant bullying from his peers due to being a bird-man. Filled with bitterness, he swore to become a successful businessman in order to gain enough money and power to tear the town down out of spite. However, he had to constantly hide what he was, and after finding out he had an inhuman offspring, he abandoned Arlo out of fear of everyone realizing his own secret. Needless to say, once he admits this, he's heartbroken and regretful at his own selfishness.
    • The series implies that his parents were hardly there for him as well.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Wears dark-colored business suits when hiding his identity as a birdman; despite this, he's not technically evil and only did that on purpose to avoid exposing himself.
  • A Day in the Limelight: "Swamp Itch" has Ansel in the spotlight, trying to take care of Arlo who suffers from an itchy and delusional fever.
  • Dynamic Entry: Shows up at Seaside on his large yacht before soaring up into the sun and then back to the ground.
  • Easily Forgiven: Arlo immediately forgives him for abandoning him at birth and disowning him after he owns up to his mistake.
  • Eccentric Millionaire: Though nowhere near to the extent of his peers.
  • Emerging from the Shadows: He does this as he reveals his birdman identity to the public.
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: Ansel's eyes have little wrinkles under them, probably to signify the stress he had been through over being bullied and hiding his bird-man identity. He even had them in his childhood.
  • First-Name Basis: He is addressed by name or "Mr. Beauregard" instead of "Dad" by Arlo when disowned by him.
  • Fisher Kingdom: Hiding his true self and being a Self-Made Man far too long causes him to become so hung up in it that it's become the only thing he cares about now, to the point of abandoning and disowning Arlo.
  • Five Stages of Grief: Ansel's struggles with hiding his true self prior to Arlo's arrival is based on all five beats:
    • Denial: Tried to hide his true self and passes himself off as a normal human being, and abandoned Arlo into the sewers for the sake of not wanting to be exposed as a Half-Human Hybrid.
    • Anger: Is unwelcome toward Arlo's return and repeatedly denies that he's his father.
    • Bargaining: Attempted to help Arlo by showing him his project and getting him to literally change himself like he did.
    • Depression: Breaks down upon Arlo confronting him at the Met Gala and seeing him get dragged off by the poachers is the final step toward realizing what he had become.
    • Acceptance: Finally decides to spread his wings and reveal his true form to rescue Arlo, appreciate him as his son once again, and the two reunite.
  • Flight: Has this ability.
  • Foreshadowing: There are several hints throughout the movie that Ansel is a bird-man, especially in his song "Better Life".
    • Multiple aspects in Ansel's penthouse are associated with birds, specifically a stained glass peacock, a dove statue, and the piano in the library has a monogram of a dove on it. The keys are also golden instead of black, like his wings.
    • "Much like I used to be." — Ansel was ridiculed and teased nonstop in his childhood because of his half-bird appearance.
    • "Like a phoenix from the ashes, I rose up into me." — Ansel hid his true self and passed himself off as a regular man to become successful.
    • "I'm a self-made man, I'm an entrepreneur." — Ansel made himself into a successful businessman so he would have enough power to "tear it all down".
    • "Like a foreign emissary, you can't come after me." — Ansel came from Seaside by the Seashore, a boardwalk neighborhood in Brooklyn which is outside the city streets. In addition, "foreign" may metamorphically refer to him as a Half-Human Hybrid.
    • "Look at that face, we can hide that chin." — He tried to hide Arlo's true self like how he did to himself.
    • "What I'm starting to see is a fine young sir who can walk the streets and conquer the world." — As before, by disguising himself, Ansel became a Self-Made Man and gained a supremely wealthy lifestyle.
    • "From where I stand, on my perch in all this land..." — A "perch" refers to what a bird stands on. He says this while standing atop the library chandelier, which can only be accessed by flight without a ladder.
    • "I see a lost young man who needs to make a plan." — Ironically, Ansel felt lost himself in his childhood when being bullied, and made a plan to conceal himself to the public to be successful.
    • "You gotta change yourself, you gotta un-strange yourself." — He literally changed his outside, by hiding his bird features, thus "un-stranging" himself to look normal.
    • "You gotta make yourself, or else you're gonna break yourself." — He does break himself indeed, thanks to Arlo confronting him at the Met Gala and seeing him get dragged off by Ruff and Stucky.
    • In the final chorus, he places a white-gold feather on Arlo's bowler hat, which is most likely from his wings.
    • A more visible hint of foreshadowing occurs during Arlo's BSoD Song, when an image of Ansel appears on a wave and grows wings before it crashes.
    • His appearance is very avian, given his Gag Nose as explained below, and the way his hair is slicked back resembles the comb of a blue jay or woodpecker. It's most noticeable when seen as a shadow or silhouette.
    • During the interview scene, Ansel rescues an injured pigeon from a shoe and surprisingly goes very easy on it.
  • Furry Reminder: In "Swamp Itch", he squaks like a bird whenever stressed, and his first instinct when looking for things to comfort Arlo is to get a bunch of sticks to make a nest.
  • Gag Nose: Has a rather oddly-styled nose that is thin and protrudes outward like a bird beak. Gives a hint at what he really is.
  • Good Parent: Since reuniting with Arlo, he plays this straight and does whatever he can to be the perfect father he's never been. That being said, he has his fumbles.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: A bird-man; half-human and half-bird. Shares this trope with his half-alligator son.
  • Hammerspace: Apparently, he has dollars all over him — in his whiskers, ears, bloomers, and even tears.
  • Harping on About Harpies: His true form is that of a bird-man; more specifically the legs and wings of what appears to be a seagull- and it's quite a large wingspan, too.
  • "I Am" Song: "Better Life", which is about Ansel's life as a businessman and how much he's got caught up in such.
  • I Have No Son!: How he feels about Arlo. He comes to regret this later.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: Indeed very much resembles his voice actor dead-on.
  • It Runs in the Family: Just like his son, he's a Half-Human Hybrid who felt like an outcast, tried to hide his true self, tried to fit in outside their birth home, and came to grips with expressing who he really is. Also, he's a great singer.
  • Light Is Good: Has white-gold wings, showing deep down, he's still the loveable father Arlo knows.
  • Love Redeems: His love for his son causes him to throw away his fears of everyone's opinion of him, and convinces him to let Arlo and his friends fix Seaside by the Seashore instead of destroying it.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Admits Arlo was right all along and he is indeed his father, just after revealing his bird-man identity.
  • Luminescent Blush: Not only is his on his cheeks, but he also has a few extras on the end of his nose and entire earlobes.
  • Meaningful Name: The name "Ansel" is of French origin, meaning "follower of a nobleman". It most likely refers to him becoming a successful businessman in New York from hiding his true self.
  • Mr. Alt Disney: Word of God states that his physical appearance was meant to give off an "Uncle Walt" impression to make him seem very trustworthy at first.
  • My Greatest Failure: He considers abandoning Arlo the biggest mistake of his life.
  • My Significance Sense Is Tingling: He can sense something is up, usually his son in danger or having trouble, evidenced by his neck tingling and making repetitive bird noises.
  • Mysterious Middle Initial: We still have yet to learn what the "T" in his middle name stands for.
  • The Nicknamer: In the series, he tries to give an endearing nickname to Arlo. All of them fail to stick.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: As he admits to Arlo at the gala, turns out they have much more in common than thought. Both are Half-Human Hybrids who were resented or ridiculed in their respective communities, both tried to hide their true selves from the public, both struggled with fitting in with the outside world, and felt better upon expressing their true selves, thus allowing them to bond once again.
  • Out of Focus: In the Season 1 finale due to the focus shifting to Arlo's swamp. He also does not speak aside from a few non-verbal vocalizations.
  • Papa Wolf: Evolves into one in the climax, when his son gets dragged off by Ruff and Stucky and manages to fight them and take him right back, all while simultaneously revealing his true self after many years of being suppressed.
  • Passing the Torch: Allows Arlo to live in his old Brooklyn neighborhood and even has him restore it as well.
  • Poor Communication Kills: "Memory of a Pizza" has him call Arlo about the mayor showing up for an inspection. Him mentioning that Seaside might be shut down as a result sends his son and friends into a panic as they try way too hard to impress the mayor when she arrives. In the end, he's more than a bit embarrassed when she reveals that she had no intention of doing that whatsoever.
  • Preppy Name: Complete with Mysterious Middle Initial. That being said, his beginnings were far from affluent.
  • Rags to Riches: Went from a regular citizen of Seaside to a success story...after hiding his true identity for years.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: To Arlo after his redemption; his first major usage of this is when he lets Arlo and the gang take up residence at Seaside by the Seashore and reopen it back in its pristine condition instead of demolishing it, so he can finally reconnect with him after all those years.
  • Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense: Not nearly as bad as other examples, but a lot of his dumber decisions, especially in "In the Blue With You", come from his relience on lavish stuff in place of anything else. Plus, he's a little dense in some areas.
  • Self-Made Man: As described in his song and his flashback, Ansel achieved almost all of his influence and success all by himself. Amusingly, him having to hide his half-bird nature means that he literally had to make himself into a man.
  • Ship Tease: He has a pretty obvious crush on Mayor Elena, who doesn’t mind the attention. He hilariously gets called out by her when he tries having her around to discuss very useless arrangements.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Though their half-animal appearances would beg to differ, Ansel shares Arlo's X-designed ears, mussy hair, and pointed fingers. They also have the same eye design.
  • Token Flyer: The only one of the main cast capable of flight.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Initially a free-spirited child, being bullied by his boardwalk mates about his half-bird self causes him to hide said appearance and pass off as a normal human, hoping he'd have enough power to "tear it all down". By the present day, he has become a success in New York's business world, but has simultaneously caused himself to cast away his own son for the sake of not wanting him to expose who he really is, something he completely regrets. Thanks to Arlo's love and understanding, Ansel finally becomes the nice man we knew from the past, and is now comfortable with his true self, and rekindles with Arlo.
  • Tritagonist: In the movie, he has the third major role after Arlo and Bertie, respectively.
  • The Unmasking: Ansel does this at the Met Gala, revealing his identity as a bird-man, just after rescuing Arlo.
  • Villain Song: "Better Life". To be fair, he is more of an Anti-Villain, and the song itself serves only to distract Arlo into leaving (though it does lyrically offer some terrible advice to him), as well as offer a metric ton of foreshadowing to what he truly is. "Phoenix rising from the ashes", anyone?
  • What Have I Become?: Says this word for word after Ruff and Stucky briefly capture Arlo.
  • Winged Humanoid: Hence being a bird-man.

    Edmée

"Now remember, if you ever get lost, you just let that wonderful heart and all that joy inside your soul be your guide."
Voiced by: Annie Potts

The kindly old lady who raised Arlo from infancy after he ended up in the Louisiana swamp she lived at. For fifteen years, she kept him safe, but also kept his true heritage a secret until she felt the time was right. She also apparently spent time in prison, and is currently hiding from the Feds, hence her status as a swamp hermit.

  • Bound and Gagged: Happens to her in the second-to-last episode of Season 1 when Ruff and Stucky capture her by the Bog Lady's orders.
  • Cool Old Lady: She raised Arlo until he was fifteen years old, and loves him just the same.
  • Damsel in Distress: Becomes one in the end of Season 1 thanks to being held as bait by the Bog Lady.
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: Has a rather heavy layer of them.
  • Incoming Ham: If she feels some suspicious activity outside, she'll shout, "WHO DAT?!", then come bursting out the door.
  • Messy Hair: Has a large, poofy unkept bun with various leaves sticking out of it.
  • Noodle Incident: She mentions there being warrants out for her arrest, but doesn't explain why. Either way, she almost always goes on the offensive when someone's at her door, believing them to be Feds.
  • Not Allowed to Grow Old: Averted. When she first took in Arlo, she had grey-brown hair which got white with leaves in it within the span of fifteen years, along with facial wrinkles.
  • Parental Substitute: She raised Arlo ever since he was a baby.
  • Ragin' Cajun: To give you an idea, her usual response to hearing a knock on her door is to show indiscriminate aggression, following by her wielding a weapon of some kind. She's completely different around Arlo.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Early on in the film, she lets Arlo learn of his true past and allows him to leave the swamp so he can set off for his true home and find his father.
  • Spanner in the Works: Edmée keeping Arlo's hospital bracelet and showing it to him when he turns 15, allowing him to leave the swamp, is what ultimately foils the plan of the Bog Lady to make sure he stays.

Arlo's pet frog and the sole animal in the swamp who likes him. He tags along with him around the swamp and eventually stays behind with Edmée after he leaves. At the start of the show, he comes to live with Arlo at Seaside by the Seashore.

  • Acrofatic: Can keep up with Arlo despite its roundness and clumsiness.
  • Ascended Extra: "Jeromio, Jeromio" is dedicated to him.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: In the Pilot Movie, Jeromio's croaks were deeper and more realistic sounding, almost similar to a real bullfrog's croak. In the show, the croaks are more cartoony, and have been changed to utterances of the word "ribbit".
  • Free-Range Pets: Jeromio tends to stay outside the house, but often comes to visit Arlo's room through his window.
  • Gasshole: Doesn't do much besides fart and croak.
  • Heroic BSoD: Suffers one throughout "Jeromio, Jeromio" due to homesickness. Arlo cheers him by taking him for a swim at Central Park.
  • The Klutz: Fails often while leaping to reach something.
  • Loyal Animal Companion: Stays with Arlo because it wants to, unlike the other animals in the swamp.
  • Only Friend: Arlo's only friend when he lived in the swamp.
  • The Stoic: Tends to just stare with blank eyes and expression.
  • Squeaky Eyes: Does this often when blinking.
  • Suddenly Voiced:
    • Despite making nothing but croaks, once Arlo leaves he suddenly answers to Edmée with a deep "yup."
    • He does it again in "Jeromio, Jeromio", uttering the word "Swamp!" when Arlo realizes why he's depressed.
    • Yet again in "Frogday the 13th" when he utters "Now, now!" when advancing toward a nervous Bertie in the kitchen.
  • Team Pet: Becomes this to Arlo's gang following his move to the city.
  • The Voiceless: Much like all other regular animals, he speaks with only croaks...until his last scene, that is.

Other neighbors

    Gordy
A very creepy and odd pumpkin-headed boy who frequently shows up every now and then for no reason in particular.

  • Bratty Half-Pint: Always seen unnerving others and vandalizing property.
  • Creepy Child: Most of what he does is quite unnerving.
  • Development Gag: Gordy was originally going to be a main character living alongside Alia in the sewers of New York. After he was cut, he was relegated to Recurring Extra. As a possible reference to his original role, Alia is the only main character to interact with him in the series.
  • Losing Your Head: Can turn his head a whole 360 degrees, implying that he could take it off at any moment. He certainly has no problem carving out expressions on it.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: It's hard to figure out who or what exactly Gordy is. Bertie thinks he isn't even real.
  • Punny Name: His name is a pun on gourds. Arlo even calls him "Gordon".
  • Recurring Extra: Appears in almost every episode for a brief moment.
  • The Voiceless: Never utters a word when he shows up.

    Mayor Elena

    Thao
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vlcsnap_2021_09_08_11h32m49s240.png
Voiced by: Cathy Vu
The mailwoman of Seaside by the Seashore.

  • A Day in the Limelight: Downplayed. She only gets a significant role in "Blow Out" as Furlecia's late-night customer.
  • Butt-Monkey: A Running Gag is of her suffering from the packages she delivers to Arlo.
  • Hilariously Abusive Childhood: According to her, her parents forced her to do a ribbon dance in front of the entire town on her 11th birthday. She hasn't spoken to them since.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: At the end of "Blow Out", her hair goes from slightly frazzled-looking to smooth and kempt thanks to Furlecia's makeover. She keeps it for the rest of the series.

    Lily the Lobster Woman
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vlcsnap_2021_09_08_11h29m35s232.png
Voiced by: Melissa Villaseñor

A half-lobster woman and former partner of Marcellus, who owns a lost-and-found at Seaside.

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Pretends to be completely innocent and pure at first, but soon reveals herself to be an insanely pesky thief.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Half human, half lobster.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After being exposed by Arlo and company, the former realizes that she's great at finding things, and hires her to run the local lost and found.
  • Refuge in Audacity: She's not discret when she steals things. She can be blatantly seen stealing from people without any shame.
  • Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: "Innocent sigh!"
  • Sticky Fingers: Is chronically incapable of moving in to places and not stealing everyone's possessions.

    Tony's family
Voiced by: Mark Whitten (Tony's Dad); Maria Bamford (Tony's Mom/Aunt Guy); Ryan Crego (Little Bitty Louie)
Tony's various relatives.

  • Half-Human Hybrid: Tony's mother shares more of a Strong Family Resemblance to her son, but Tony's father is a straight-up walking sewer rat.
  • Karma Houdini: Tony's parents get away scott-free after stealing Ansel's helicopter.
  • The Mafia: They are a long line of, as Tony describes, "con artists, thieves, crooks, scammers, cheaters, tricksters, hustlers, swindlers, grifters, charlatans, conterfeiters, absconders, and flimflammers".
  • Unseen No More: The parents appear onscreen for the first time in "Tony Baloney" following brief mentions in The Movie.
  • You Dirty Rat!: A whole family of criminal rat-people.

    Sam the Music Man
Voiced by: Mark Whitten
A musician who owns the local music store.

    Peggy
Voiced by: N/A
A gigantic squid that resides at the bottom of the ocean near Seaside.

  • Cargo Ship: With Ansel's bust.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Her tentacle appears in the movie, gently playing with baby Arlo's carriage.
    • In the series, she, or at least one of her kind, appears on dry land near a supermarket in "Community Garden".
  • Eye Awaken: Upon getting accidentally hit with Ansel's bust.
  • Heel–Face Turn: In "The Uncondemning", she waves to Arlo and company, not going after their yacht this time.
  • It Can Think: Seems to actually play along with Alia befriending her tentacle before going in for the attack. Later, she gives directions to the gang when they're heading to the swamp.
  • Kraken and Leviathan: The former, of course.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Teenager, yes, but she gave Alia a rather savage beating upon turning hostile.

    The Rat King
Voiced by: Mark Whitten
A rat-man who controls a horde of rats and is also a musical theatre writer.

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Pretends to take an interest in Bertie's work before stealing the bus. That being said, his advice was genuine.
  • Karma Houdini: Despite stealing a bus (and unintentionally kidnapping Marcellus), he is still allowed at the Uncondemning Party.
  • Large Ham: Comes with the territory of being a musical writer.
  • You Dirty Rat!: Steals the gang's bus after giving Bertie some advice.

Antagonists

    Ruff and Stucky
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rustu.png
Voiced by: Flea (Ruff) and Jennifer Coolidge (Stucky)

Two violent hillbillies who run a gator farm in the Louisiana swamp, and recently been informed of Arlo's existence. Realizing an alligator boy could make them rich, the duo pursues Arlo and his friends along the East Coast. While both are not particularly smart, Ruff is especially dimwitted. Their trump card in their mission to capture Arlo is the Beast.

  • Aesop Amnesia: As the ransom letter they sent in "Alro" proves, they completely forgot about the "life lesson" they learned in the movie.
  • Anti-Hero: Following their Heel–Face Turn, they're not as threatening to Arlo anymore but nevertheless still retain some bits of snarkiness.
  • Barefoot Loon: Ruff has shades of this. He doesn't seem to mind walking without shoes to the point that his feet are perpetually dirty and he's also a bit more touched than his partner Stucky.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: The two main antagonists of the movie.
  • Bumbling Henchmen Duo: They fit the bill despite being the main antagonists; they are an inseparable Fat and Skinny pair of goons who are not very bright, trying to capture Arlo so that they can get rich.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: In Season 1, at first they appeared to have pulled a Fake Defector and are holding Edmée hostage and demand ransom; but as it turns out, they really have changed. The visit to them sets up the eventual appearance of the Bog Lady, the true Big Bad of the season.
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: Both of them, in keeping up with everyone else, though Ruff's are more noticeable and heavier.
  • Fat and Skinny: Stucky is a large, overweight woman; Ruff is a skinny man apart from his beer gut.
  • Fingore: Ruff is missing the top portion of his left pinkie.
  • Gonk: Compared to the rest of the cast, Ruff and Stucky aren't very easy on the eyes.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Seem to become kinder and regret chasing Arlo after witnessing the emotional speech at the gala. Ruff outright states he had no idea how much he'd learn about the human experience during their journey. This is extended into the series as they're not the reason behind Edmée's kidnapping and the Bog Lady manipulated them into making a ransom note so she can lure Arlo back to her.
  • Karma Houdini: Despite tormenting Arlo and company, threatening a highly respected public figure, and most certainly feeding a man alive to their Welsh Corgi werebeast, they're not the least punished for their actions.
  • Laughably Evil: They are a legitimate threat to Arlo and can be menacing, but are still rather comical.
  • Never Learned to Read: According to Stucky, Ruff can't read (or learn, for that matter). However, he seems perfectly able to read what's being said on the jumbotron in Times Square, so this is a bit on the dubious side. When being manipulated into writing a ransom note to lure Arlo to the Bog Lady, he misspells several words, such as listing Arlo's name as "Alro".
  • Red Herring: In the Season 1 finale, they send Arlo a note claiming Edmée is being held hostage and demand ransom for her release; however, turns out they're not really behind the true conflict and were only manipulated for such, and it's the Bog Lady who's the even bigger threat.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Stucky is the hotheaded red oni to Ruff's airheaded blue oni.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: After being freed from the tree the Bog Lady trapped them in, the two are quick to depart from the swamp.
  • Warning Song: Their self-titled song in the Season 1 finale, as they warn Arlo and company about the Bog Lady.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: In "The Uncondemning", they are last seen fleeing in a swamp boat. The boat is seen later on (having been located and commandeered by Marcellus), but what happened to Ruff and Stucky is left unknown.

    The Beast
Voiced by: Fred Tatasciore
A giant, werewolf-like Welsh Corgi who acts as Ruff and Stucky's muscle and enforcer. Following the end of the movie, he becomes part of Ansel's crew serving as the mascot of his yacht.
  • Ambiguous Gender: The Beast has no specified gender as of now, and isn't referred to with gender-related pronouns.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: The very end has him fully dressed in a well-done suit. He doesn't seem to mind.
  • Beware of Vicious Dog: An aggressive and massive canine kept inside a cage and on a metal leash while outside of it.
  • Big Friendly Dog: Has his moments, like when he curiously sniffed the camera at the gala and smiled in a way any excited dog would...until the camera's flash angered him again. He becomes this trope in full by the time the series starts, working as the harmless mascot of Ansel's yacht.
  • The Brute: The muscle for Ruff and Stucky they use to intimidate, chase, and even fight people when needed.
  • By the Lights of Their Eyes: How it is introduced.
  • Dogs Are Dumb: Unlike the other humanoid animals and creatures in the movie, the Beast is mentally very much like an actual dog and does not seem to be capable of speech.
  • Fed to the Beast: Implied to be the fate of the man Ruff and Stucky interrogated.
  • Furry Reminder: Feral personality aside, the Beast has a quite humanoid body type, but instead of two, he has multiple nipples going down his stomach like dogs do. He's also easily distracted and pants a lot when happy.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: Sports yellow ones during night scenes and the movie's climax, making him look truly intimidating.
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: Wears pants and nothing else, which works fine considering how huge his arms and upper body are. Becomes a Fully-Dressed Cartoon Animal at the end thanks to Ansel.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Appears to have turned good in the end, just like Ruff and Stucky. In the series, he works on Ansel's yacht.
  • Irony: Despite being shown as a threat, he doesn't do much in the end other than just forcing Arlo to come with the hillbillies without much provocation and a very short-lived fight against Bertie.
  • Multi Boobage: A rare G rated example: an anthropomorphic dog with multiple pairs of nipples, albeit drawn n a masculine style.
  • Our Werebeasts Are Different: A huge, intimidating...were-Corgi.
  • Red Herring: When Edmée was kidnapped in the Season 1 finale, they sent a note to Arlo demanding ransom for her release. But as it turns out, the note wasn't their idea, and it was the Bog Lady who's behind the real kidnapping and ordered the two to send the note as part of her plan to lure Arlo back to the swamp.
  • Rugged Scar: His right ear is partially torn and he has scars on his left shoulder.
  • Shout-Out: He resembles a contemporary "Doge" meme depicting a huge humanoid Shiba Inu with almost the exact same body type.
  • Tiny-Headed Behemoth: Positively massive...except for his head.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: In the Season 1 finale, he was strangely not seen at Seaside's Uncondemning party.

    The Bog Lady
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vlcsnap_2021_08_29_21h47m22s700.png
"You know, you never should've disobeyed!"
Voiced by: Santigold

The sinister keeper of the Heart of the Swamp, who secretly protected Arlo during his swamp years. She was furious when Arlo left for New York City and is determined he stays with her whatever it takes.

  • Berserk Button: Arlo leaving the swamp is what makes the Bog Lady infuriated to the point of losing the one thing she took care of, leaving her to plunge the swamp into a thorny curse.
  • Beyond Redemption: If her turning down Arlo's apology wouldn't be enough, then she's far off the point of even redeeming herself, to the point it's best Edmée blew up her shack and killed her.
  • Big Bad: Of the Season 1 finale.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Pretends to be a guardian during Arlo's childhood, but in reality, she doesn't want him to leave at all, and once he did, this really made her mad.
  • Death by Irony: Her narcissism and commitment to all swamp life to the point of not wanting anyone, especially Arlo, to leave, as well as her plan to lure Arlo back to her and get him to never leave again, is what results in her final fate, allowing Arlo his freedom while she disintegrates into nothingness from the shack explosion.
  • Didn't Think This Through: She obviously didn't know her plan to lure Arlo to her had a few flaws in it; for starters, Alia took inspiration from Bertie to "change her perspective" and find the Heart from above the treetops, and in turn they reach the heart and free Arlo from her trance while fighting her. Secondly, while she did manage to sink the yacht, she didn't know Marcellus would use tracking devices to reunite everyone.
  • The Dreaded: She's feared by nearly all; heck, even Ruff and Stucky were terrified at the mention of her name. Arlo even had to face her in order to get Edmée back, but his intense fear of her only got the better of him which in turn causes him to let his guard down and be captured.
  • Evil Counterpart:
    • To Edmée. While Edmée is a kindhearted swamp hermit who raises Arlo all his life and showers him with love and care, and does the right thing at letting him go, the Bog Lady is an evil, ruthless tyrant who only cared about Arlo alone and wanted him to stay in the swamp forever.
    • She also serves as one to Ansel. They are both connected to Arlo in some way; Ansel being his Dad and the Bog Lady being somewhat of a mother. When they met Arlo, the at first reacted in different ways, Ansel practiced I Have No Son! to keep Arlo from revealing his secret while the Bog Lady greeted him warmly but soon Ansel came to accept Arlo as his son and even lets him live alone while the Bog Lady became hostile and murderous to Arlo when he prioritized his friends over her needs and was clingy to Arlo and wanted him to stay with her forever.
  • Evil Plan: Lure Arlo back to the swamp so he can apologize for leaving her and force him to stay with her forever.
  • Family-Unfriendly Death: She melts and disintegrates into nothingness thanks to Edmée's shack being exploded under her.
  • Faux Affably Evil: She seemed to be a kind motherly figure to Arlo during his swamp years, but once Arlo finally meets her years later, the tables are turned.
  • Foreshadowing: A few early works give vague hints toward her existence:
    • Just before Arlo sings "More More More", a vine appears before him when there wasn't one in the scene before. Also, the lily pads around his log and the flowers on the turtle's island change. This could give a hint toward the Bog Lady's Green Thumb abilities and that she's actually letting Arlo have fun.
    • During the song, Arlo says, "I'm hoppin' like a frog all around this funky bog." There actually is a funky bog, a personified one, that is. It also hints toward the Heart of the Swamp, an actual bog in the middle of the swamp, which also serves as the domain where she is encountered.
    • At one point, Arlo is entangled in a snake's tail and bitten in the head; this literally foreshadows when he is ensnared by her plant life and hypnotized into not leaving.
    • The day after Arlo's birthday, when Edmée is letting Arlo go and he is leaving for the mainland, mushrooms begin growing all over the tree trunks when they weren't there the day before. Since it's highly impossible for mushrooms to grow that quickly, it's most likely a cause of the Bog Lady's dark magic, as she's trying to entice Arlo into not leaving, as shown when she materializes a swamp flower and gives it to him in an attempt to get him to apologize.
    • In the song "Back To You", Arlo says "Return me unto the place that I'm from, take me back in." Once you realize the Bog Lady is luring Arlo back to the swamp to get him to stay with her, it becomes harsher.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: She had been secretly protecting Arlo since the day he entered the swamp as a baby; he did not know about her existence until meeting her in person fifteen years later.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: She gets glowing yellow eyes when serious.
  • Good Colors, Evil Colors: Arlo has medium olive green scales while the Bog Lady's moss hair is several shades darker, with darker brown bark skin.
  • Good Eyes, Evil Eyes: Has a more slanted eye model than Arlo's, resembling his oval eye model but tilted about 180 degrees, and has yellow sclerae, befitting her sinister persona.
  • Green Thumb: She has nature-based powers, and can manipulate all Flora in the swamp by will.
  • Hypnotic Eyes: She uses these to hypnotize Arlo into not leaving the swamp again.
  • If I Can't Have You…: When Arlo makes it clear that he won't stay in the swamp, she decides to kill him instead.
  • I'm Melting!: Her ultimate fate, thanks to Edmée's shack blowing up right underneath her.
  • It's All About Me: Dedicates herself to watching over the whole swamp and making sure it stays the same; when Arlo left, she felt entitled to him despite (A) never making herself known (B) it being Edmée who properly raised him and (C) Arlo not originally being born in the swampa and reconciling with his birth father.
    • She demands an apology because she believes that all of Arlo's adventures outside the swamp would not have happened if she hadn't protected him in the beginning.
  • Karmic Death: Receives a proper comeuppance for trying to force Arlo into staying with her forever when Edmée activates her shack's self-destruct, blowing the Bog Lady up with it and causing her to sink and melt into nothingness.
  • Killed Off for Real: Is destroyed for good thanks to the explosion of Edmée's shack.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Unlike all previous villains and anti-heroes seen up to now, the Bog Lady takes this trope up multiple notches. She's the first truly evil character to the point she's Beyond Redemption.
  • Making a Splash: In addition to her plant manipulation, she can summon walls of water and absorbs water to grow.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Part of her Evil Plan was manipulating Ruff and Stucky into writing a ransom note, luring Arlo to the swamp before he follows her voice back to the Heart.
  • More than Mind Control: Implied. Having secretly protected Arlo all his life, she lures Arlo back to the swamp by tricking him into thinking Ruff and Stucky are demanding a ransom and holding Edmée hostage as bait, then demands Arlo apologize until she straight-up brainwashes him into doing such. Thing is, Alro was already having regrets about leaving more and more after finding the ransom note and making the trip, so the brainwashing feels more like it cemented these feelings.
  • Namedar: Even Arlo was surprised that the Bog Lady knew who he was.
  • Near-Villain Victory: She separates Arlo's friends from him, sinks Ansel's yacht, and straight-up brainwashes Arlo into never leaving her while his old home is still in danger and Edmée is still locked up. Had not Bertie and Alia found the Heart of the Swamp and showed up to save Arlo and Marcellus used a tracking device to reunite them, the Bog Lady would've won.
  • One-Winged Angel: Transforms into a giant canopy who takes over the shack in the climax when Arlo breaks out of her spell and frees Edmée before escaping with the others on Marcellus' fan boat.
  • One-Woman Wail: Her ominous call of "Arlo" as she gradually lures him to her domain.
  • Planimal: Resembles a Sasquatch-like creature but with plant life. According to Ruff, she has moss hair and leaf skin.
  • Redemption Rejection: Completely turns down a chance of redemption even when Arlo apologizes and begs for forgiveness.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Totally loses it when she sees Arlo snap out of her spell and free Edmée before escaping with the girls, prompting her to unleash her full wrath.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Arlo is surprised that the Bog Lady knows him upon their first encounter, since she's been secretly giving him the time of his life during his swamp years.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: Totally. Unlike Ruff and Stucky who were bumbling villains, The Beast who's just a rampaging mutant, and Lily who's a larcenist — all of which turned good — the Bog Lady was unredeemable, and evil to the core.
  • Villain Song: Technically has two, to make up for her rather sudden appearance in the final episode.
    • "Ruff 'n' Stucky," which is a Villain Sucks Song sung by the previously villainous duo, is a jazzy piano piece backed by hillbilly banjo and synth beats. It's not only an explaination of her motivation and abilities, but displays how much bigger of a threat she is in comparison to the two.
  • "The Bog Lady," which she sings herself, is a simple banjo song that almost sounds cheerful and inviting until notes begin playing backwards and synth instruments and effects are mixed in to make it sound more menacing. It highlights the contrast between how inviting and giving she wants to portray herself as, vs. How selfish and controlling her one-sided relationship with Arlo actually is.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: The Bog Lady is hesitant at keeping everything in the swamp in order, but it's Arlo whom she's especially attached to. She secretly showers him with love, care, and protection ever since the day he first entered the swamp as a baby, something he completely had no idea during his time there. After learning of his true heritage from Edmée on his fifteenth birthday which in turn allows him to finally leave the swamp and begin his journey, this enraged the Bog Lady over losing the one thing she grew attached to all those years; thus she hatches a scheme by casting a dark curse over the swamp, getting Ruff and Stucky to trap Edmée as bait, has Arlo lured to her by a ransom note she ordered the hunters to write out, sinks the yacht used for the way back home, separates him from his friends, and once she finally has him all alone, demand he apologize for leaving her and never do it again. Naturally, he refuses.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Witnessing Arlo break free of her control, rescue Edmée and escape the Heart with his friends pushes the Bog Lady's anger to its highest point, prompting her to go One-Winged Angel and take over the shack.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Even worse than Ruff and Stucky in the movie. Not getting an apology from Arlo for leaving the swamp sends her in a rage and attacks him, even snatching him up in her plant life. She even hypnotized him into not leaving her, and coldly turns down his apology and tried to eat him and his friends if it weren't for Edmée interfering.

Other Characters

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vlcsnap_2021_07_26_03h02m37s339.png

The first human couple Arlo interacts with upon leaving the swamp.

  • All There in the Script: Although Sandra June's name was mentioned in the movie proper, Bradley was not referred to by name and was only named in the end credits.
  • Character Development: Word of God states that after Arlo scared them back in Willow Button, they decided to see the world outside of their hometown. Sure enough, they can be seen driving not far from where the cast is camping out after freeing Marcellus.
