Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the new Complete Monster (CM) cleanup thread! This thread is where we clean up or cut already-existing entries.

If you're looking to add new entries, please see the approval thread.

IMPORTANT: Before you begin any discussions on this thread, please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List. Here, you'll find explanations of the criteria for the trope as well as our rules/procedures for approving and cutting candidates.

What goes through this thread?

    Examples
  • Cut requests. If you believe a CM has been approved and they do not count, this thread is where you propose their removal. To know how to go about this, please see the FAQ folder on the Administrivia page, where the process is explained in detail.
  • If we ever need to consider cutting multiple examples without individually reviewing them (e.g. if we discover widespread plagiarism with a particular troper's CMs), the initial discussion will be on this thread and we'll then escalate to the mod team (as described here) to get a formal consensus if we decide to recommend a mass cut.
  • If an entry was put on the wrong subpage/YMMV page, you may propose where they should be moved to.
  • Full rewrites of existing entries, including expansions, trims, and ground-up rewrites. If your rewrite is approved by the thread, feel free to add it to the drafts page so that other users can check grammar and the like before it is included with the rest of the weekly swaps.
  • If an entry on a work's YMMV page doesn't match the entry on the media subpage, you can bring it here to discuss which entry works better.

What does not go through this thread?

    Examples
  • New candidate proposals - as stated before, those are done on this thread.
  • Unapproved wicks - if a Troper encounters either of these kinds of wicks, they can be cut with no approval.
    • Any CM link on a non-YMMV page - as a YMMV trope, it should not be linked on those pages regardless of any cleanup effort. The only exception is if the wick is being used within the definition of another trope.
    • If an CM link on a YMMV page refers to an unapproved character. If it refers to an approved character on any such page, the wick can stay. On the other hand, if the unapproved character being linked to sounds like they might have promise (and you don't feel like checking it out for yourself), feel free to mention it on the approval thread - someone may already know why they don't count, or it could invite a brand new discussion!
  • Proposals for images, quotes, and videos of already-approved CMs - quotes and images are proposed on the approval thread, while videos can be uploaded normally as they are screened for approval by the moderation.
  • Crosswicking examples to YMMV pages - if an example has already been approved and added to the main page, you do not require any special permission to add the example to a work's YMMV page (assuming the work has a page already). If a YMMV page doesn't exist yet, then you can make it yourself, but either way, feel free to just add the example without asking.
  • Small changes to existing entries - these can simply be done on a Troper's own prerogative with no approval.
    • Spelling and grammar fixes.
    • Pothole changes.
    • Minor rewordings.
    • Spoiler tags.

While these changes do not require any kind of approval, it is requested that should you make any of these changes, you do one of the following:

  1. Make the same changes on the relevant Sandbox page, then add the Sandbox to the list at the bottom of the drafts page. This will add the Sandbox to the weekly swaps and ensure that the edits end up on the relevant locked page. If the Sandbox is already listed, then once you make the edits, your job is already done!
  2. If you don't know how the Sandboxes work or simply don't have the time to find it, then you can simply post on the thread about the changes you made. Someone else can then make the edit on the relevant Sandbox and add it to the weekly swaps.
  3. Alternatively, you can simply request that the change be made directly to the locked page on the Locked Pages thread. Members of this thread keep track of that one, so we will ensure that the changes are made in the Sandbox so that it doesn't get deleted during the next swap.

Again, these changes don't require any approval, but we prefer to keep the entries on the YMMV pages and the locked pages the same in order to avoid any miscommunication or errors between entries, so if you do make the change, we would greatly appreciate it if you could ensure the change is made on the locked page as well.

As a final note, we do not care what other sites have to say regarding whether or not a character counts. We have our own criteria and they have theirs for their CM equivalents; while they are similar, they are not exactly the same and should not be treated as such. Another site removing a character from their equivalent should not be a reason why a cut is proposed here, and if this is the case, it will likely lead to mod intervention.

Other than this, once again, welcome to the cleanup thread, and we look forward to your contributions!

Ghirahim is The Heavy and a mass murderer dropping his monsters, a Bad Boss and intends to release his master knowing what he intends to do. He keeps.

Also cut Shidou, a once very controversial candidate I'm glad to see we can civilly discuss removing.

Keep Ghirahim. He’s been brought up before and we’ve deemed him heinous enough to count

Keep Ghirahim, but one gripe with his writeup:

Demise is not an outright Omnicidal Maniac (although it is made quite clear he had a body count back then, and taking over Hyrule will result in a lot more bodies dropping). His clear intention is to evoke Hell on Earth, but he still makes it clear he wants some terrified slaves to rule over. That bit of the EP, at least, should be tweaked. With that said, it is something of an apples-and-oranges comparison whether Ghirahim wants all humanity killed or "just" most of it, so I agree he still keeps.

Honestly, could we just change "all" to "countless" in that last sentence?

In regars to Slender page, is Windigo an official product? Can that version of Slender Man be put on the page?

I've been looking into Windigo, and couldn't find any connection to the main ARG's or Victor Surge - though it may have been made before a copyright was put on the Slenderman characters.

As far as I can find, it's not considered an official part of the mythos, but was still from a time where the mythos was a little loose.

Edit: Also in regards to the Slenderman page, I've been meaning to do a few trims on a few entries. Especially HABIT - his current entry is like 231 words, and I don't think we need to list every one of his atrocities.

Anyways, here's the rewrites.

  • Always Watching: A Marble Hornets Story: This take on the Operator is more malevolent than its original counterpart, being portrayed as a supernatural serial killer, rather than a living malignant virus. The Operator would possess people to kill their loved ones, using a Calling Card to taunt and mark future victims. The Operator has a man kill his girlfriend, before stalking a family. Slowly revealing itself to the family, they flee across the country to escape it, before Operator possesses the father into smothering his daughter before trying to kill his wife. When she kills him in self-defense, she tries to suicidally burn the house down, but survives and is left broken. The Operator begins a news crew investigating the family's disappearance. When they try to avoid it, the Operator kills Milo's beloved dog out of spite. Thinking it'll stop the Operator, Milo commits suicide, but the Operator to possess his corpse to kill his friends before throwing its puppet aside.

  • Slender: The Arrival: This rendition of the Slender Man is shown to be rather malicious in its messages. Responsible countless disappearances, the Slender Man has stalked the Matheson family for generations, notably terrorizing and abducting young Charlie Matheson from his parents, mutilating him into an emaciated corpse-like creature in constant pain; later tormenting Charlie's father into committing suicide. When Carl and Kate investigate it and knowledge of the Slender Man keeps it around, Carl tries to kill himself and Kate to stop it, before the Slender Man takes Kate turning her into the ravenous "Chaser". Stalking Kate's friend Lauren as she uncovers the truth, she jumps off a tower, but the Slender Man keeps her alive to spread its influence. In its messages, the Slender Man sees death and torment as a game, and in a secret level sets helpless victim on fire, keeping her alive throughout.

  • Everyman HYBRID: HABIT is a sadistic entity capable of taking control of people's bodies, forcing his still-aware host to murder people for his own entertainment. While possessing Evan, HABIT strangles Daniel to death, extensively tortures Jeff and Steph before eventually killing them, and devours Evan and Steph's infant daughter. When Evan is released, HABIT gives him a Healing Factor that leaves him broken but unable to die. When Vincent summons HABIT for answers, HABIT forces Vince to lure more victims, locking Vince in a room for two years, psychologically torturing him and preventing Vince from killing himself. On his blog, HABIT posts writings from his victims, letting let Slender Man take his survivors, claiming to have been multiple historical serial killers and war criminals. In a crossover appearance, HABIT tortures Shaun Andersen to death in a plot to lure in his brother Michael, and the entity possessing him, "Patrick". Throughout his appearances, HABIT plainly a rampant monster, who lives inflict pain for its own sake.

Something I noticed on the Darkman page, there's a candidate I proposed a while back which is Claude Bellasarious from the 1993 comic miniseries. His writeup is not seen anywhere there despite the monster page for the franchise was deleted since we cut the two bad guys from the sequel movies.

I'd just like to make a couple of suggestions about the RWBY Fan Works page.

First, definitely look into changing the page quote. I just find it odd that the quote is somehow longer than the writeup of the character it is referencing. Maybe not have something that takes up so much space on the page for that.

Second, I wanted to look into suggesting a picture for the page from Team RAIN. I'm working on looking for specific ideas at the moment, but I wanted to know whether or not I'd suggest them in Image Pickin' or here.

As for quotes, I like the current one, but there are plenty of other options.

It's a good quote, but I just think it a bit too long to be a page quote. I just thought it could use something shorter. Plus, if the page does get an image, I can't imagine that it'll look any better.

As we're on the topic of the Slendy Mythos, I'd like to propose the removal of Clowny from TalesFromTheSpidersWeb. The series is technically part of the Slenderverse—the series has minor ties to Tribe Twelve—and Clowny is definitely heinous enough, being a cannibal and a child killer. The problem lies with the route that the series went, the creator dived deep into Surreal Horror and never looked back, the newer episodes are incredibly confusing and somewhat philosophical in nature—Clowny is implied to be everything from an alter ego of the main character to an incarnation of The Antichrist and a representation of Satan himself, and although he has a personality, he tends to speak in either complex riddles or simply unintelligible gibberish. There hasn't been a single new episode in three years so it's safer to just remove him at this point.

[down] I'm more concerned by the heavy implications of him being a split personality—The MC and Clowny are never seen together, and the MC is unhinged enough to be considered an Unreliable Narrator—and the fact that we still don't know what he wants. We know that he likes to eat people and that's it, his connection to the Slender Man is a complete mystery. The series has absurd amounts of Mind Screw so I wouldn't be surprised if Clowny is revealed to be both a split personality and a representation of the Antichrist/Satan, I'm not even sure if we'll ever get an answer honestly. Even his cannibalism is a metaphor for something that hasn't been properly explained yet. True Art Is Incomprehensible at its finest.

Hmm... how deeply ambiguous is he? You mention he's bad enough and has personality... as for possibilities as to what he is, being someone's alter ego could pose a problem but the Antichrist or Satan wouldn't be. We've had cases like Takamiya from Twilight of the Dark Master where it isn't certain she has agency but going through the possibilities of what she is leads to many situations in which she does, one in which she doesn't, so there's enough to assume she's knowingly being a force of malevolence.

Okay so World of the Dead is suppose to be a Continuation for High School Of The Dead so they would use the canon backstory for Shido for this story. Here is the chapter where Shido tells Rei about how Shido’s father was a monster who drove his mother to an early death in his attempt to manipulate Rei into forgiving him. So I guess you would have to cut that Shido as well (which is unfortunate since he’s much worse in the fanfic)

Rewrite:

  • Code 8: Marcus Sutcliffe is a dapper drug lord and Loan Shark whose specialty, Psyke, is made by extracting the spinal fluid of powered individuals. After one of his drug farms is raided, Marcus recruits Connor Reed in multiple robberies at the behest of his subordinate, Garrett Kent, in order to pay off a debt to the cartel known as the Trust. Nia eventually reveals to Connor that Marcus forced her into a position as a healer. Falsely offering Nia's services under the pretense of having her heal Connor's mother, in exchange for the crew stealing his supply back from the police escort, Marcus has his men turn their guns on the crew and steal the supply back for him, resulting in the deaths of two crew members and four police officers. When Nia confronts Marcus about the others, he threatens her imprisoned father, who is in debt to him.
