Go To

The Hindsight tropes, Hilarious in Hindsight, Harsher in Hindsight, and Heartwarming in Hindsight, are among the most misused Audience Reaction tropes on this site. Many people don't understand that the tropes require more than just "This happened, so that happened", and end up adding examples which either lack connection or the substance that makes them funny/serious/not-so-funny/heartwarming. Some of them may be suited better for other tropes (ex: Life Imitates Art), while some may not belong on TV Tropes at all (such as ones involving politicians, due to Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment).

Please report any Hindsight example that you feel are questionable, and we'll analyze them to see if they are actually examples or not.

Remember that the Hindsight tropes are Audience Reactions. That means if an example under review discusses significant fan response pointing out the hindsight, the example can't be cut solely for being too tenuous for this thread.

    Common NOT in Hindsight examples
  • Creator's character/portrayal dies in work and then creator dies in real life, unless their fictional death is closely similar to their real one (such as Billy Bob Joe portraying a character who dies from pancreatic cancer, then Billy Bob dies from pancreatic cancer himself)
  • Mundane word related to something terrible (such as "corona" or "Epstein") unless there's more to the connection (such as someone named "Corona" having the flu)
  • Creator appears in work then becomes more controversial later on.
  • A common event (such as a typical natural disaster) happens in work, then happens in real life (unless they are closely similar, such as the event happening to the same area in both reality and fiction around the same time) For once, not everything related to disease has to do with COVID-19, not everything related to racism and Police Brutality has to do with George Floyd and Black Lives Matter, and not everything related to sexual abuse has to do with #MeToo.
  • A common/generic concept was used in this work and then later reused in that work (too loose for a connection, unless the concept is so unique it's identified with the work)
  • Two actors appear together then do so in another work
  • Hindsight examples involving recent events, due to them often being shoehorns. Specifically:
    • COVID-19 examples, before 75% of the population has returned to normal
    • George Floyd/2020 Black Lives Matter examples, before protests have declined
  • Examples which fall guilty of Older Than They Think, such as "Make X Great Again" slogans. Aside from violating the ROCEJ, this slogan has been in use since the 1940s.
  • Characters using slurs which are treated as annoying at worst in the work, but is now harsher due to how severe the slur is made now. Discrimination has always existed with that slur. (May qualify for Values Dissonance if work is at least 20 years old.)

Note: As of January 2022, "Funny Aneurysm" Moment is no longer separate from Harsher in Hindsight.
  • The former redirects to the latter and all wicks to the former (with the exception of ones on archive pages and the YMMV Redirects index) must either be moved to the latter (if they're valid) or removed (if they're invalid).
  • The subpages for the former are still accessible from this page. After a subpage for "Funny Aneurysm" Moment has been completely cleaned up, turn it into a redirect to the Harsher in Hindsight subpage for the same medium to preserve inbounds.

This was just added to Robin Hood (1973).

  • A film featuring a red fox who dresses in green and often engages in illegal activity? Hmmm.

IIRC, doesn't hindsight have to be unintentional? Because Zootopia's directors outright said Nick was inspired by Robin Hood.

I feel like Nick reminded people of Robin Hood more than vice versa. And yeah if it's an intentional meta call back then it wouldn't count.

YMMV.Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 has this entry:

Calling it "hilarious" feels so messed-up I don't even want to talk about it. What should be done with it?

BigJimbo Since: Dec, 2017
#6982: Oct 21st 2023 at 6:29:40 AM

I just remembered that YMMV.Animaniacs 2020 has a similar entry:

  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • "The Reason You Suck" Speech on comparing Putin's hairline to global influence in "The Pinktator" became this as Ukraine Invasion in 2022 accelerated the decline of Russia's reputation and influence (both from atrocities and the abysmal failure in its first month that led to its bloody stalemate).
I don't know what I would call this, but it's certainly not "hilarious" if you ask me.

NOTE: I'm aware I shouldn't doublepost, I had just forgotten at the time I wrote this.

I'd remove both for misuse, I'm also unsure if the relation are also valid without more context.

Don't we have a statute of limitations on ongoing events (such as the Ukraine War)?

I guess the Animaniacs example might be okay if it were moved to Harsher (except it would still run afoul of the "ongoing events" issue). The first example is just terrible; we don't need it in any form.

Get your hindsight bingo ready for this from Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney:

  • The Dark Age of Law began between 2020 to 2027 with two incidents (one of which was Phoenix Wright being caught presenting forged evidence (albeit unknowingly) during the Gramarye murder case) pretty much completely tuned out the public's care for the law due to the regular miscarriages of justice, putting so little faith in the law and government that every lawyer wound up in The Tyson Zone due to the Courtroom Antics that occured. This, legally speaking, completely matches with the period of chronic disillusionment with the U.S. government in The New '20s following the 2020 election, Donald Trump's presidency and the perceived extremism and corruption on both sides making faith in the law at an all-time low. Basically, the Dark Age of Law is happening now, with the only difference being the Japanese legal system due to mass immigration from Japan to California.

Jumping the gun on recency? Anglosphere centric? Wildly inappropriate equivalence? Donald Trump? Soapboxing? A citation that boils down to 'here's a few people that agree with me'?

You bet!

[up][up]That's got to be one of the most wildly ROCEJ-violating entries I've seen. Should definitely be cut.

That's rich. Dark Age of Law is a specific concept where legal council used fake evedience to win courts (not like that describes 80% of lawyers in the franchise anyway). What counts as Dark Age of the Law in Real Life will subjective and anywhere from "always has been" to "it's actually better than before".

Anyway, tangent aside, I think this may be ROCEJ as well.

Maybe we'll revisit that one in 2027. But for now it's too broadly used to complain about real life law.

From Henry Danger:

  • Harsher in Hindsight: To anyone who does not support Donald Trump, Hilary Clinton or care about politics in general, "The Trouble With Frittles" in its entirety definitely puts a sour taste in viewer's mouths nowadays due to real life occurrences relating to the General Elections that have occurred in 2016 and 2020 respectively. The plot features a snack debate between Henry and Ray over red and blue Frittle chips to see what would become the newest Frittle flavour; three days after this episode aired, Donald Trump won the 2016 election, done some controversial things throughout his time as president and raided the Capitol in 2021 after Biden won the 2020 election. Looking back at this episode now makes you wonder if you should watch it or skip it.

...How did they get this from a snack debate?

It was an Election Day Episode where people voted over whether they wanted the red one or the blue one to be the new flavor. Given when it aired and the choice of red and blue as colors, I do think there's a connection. Whether that makes this example valid is another matter.

Sounds like a deliberate allegory for an election, so I don't think it counts, especially since it relies on Trump simply being bad without any connection to specific allegorical controversies in the actual episode. And if you hated Trump or Clinton when it aired (because they didn't magically come into existence on November 9, 2016), you probably wouldn't have liked the episode any more than you do now.

I want to add a Harsher in Hindsight example to YMMV.Moshi Monsters, and because I haven't been active in the Hindsight cleanup recently, I want to get feedback on this entry and ask if it qualifies as an example of HaIH:

  • Harsher in Hindsight: In the 2011 song "The Moshi Dance," Lady Goo Goo sings the lyric "Lady Goo Goo's here to stay!" This stinged after Gaga's lawyers successfully sued Mind Candy and won in late 2011, resulting in Lady Goo Goo's departure and eventual replacement with Baby Rox in late 2012.

  • This game and supplementary material for it give an explanation for how most of the technology and magic within the world of Little Tail Bronx works: nanomachines, son!

By the logic this example suggests, any other occurrence of magic in a setting being explained this way would invoke that meme if it predated it, so this feels like a shoehorn for the sake of dropping a meme that happened to occur in a later-released game, not helped by the edit reason that accompanied this example being, "I couldn't resist. Or I could, but I just didn't want to".

YMMV.Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger feels like a large bunch of shoehorns:

  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • At the beginning of episode 6, Geki gets transported to a strange land by Guardian Beast Tyrannosaurus, and sees the toppled Tokyo Tower. Tokyo was badly rocked by an earthquake/tsunami many years later. "Catastrophes happen"
    • The fact that Tommy Oliver, Burai's occidental counterpart, is Spared By Adaptation and became a Composite Character of five rangers, became this with the death of Jason David Frank. "People die"
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • The first closing theme was deliberately Latino-styled, almost like a foreshadowing of the also dinosaur-themed Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger which had a heavy Latino-style to it. Shoehorn?
    • Eleven years later, in another dinosaur-themed Sentai, a scenario where a fan-favorite evil Sixth Ranger who wields a dagger as his weapon and pilots a dragon mech who later turns good (but didn't live long enough) repeats again. This kinda sorta works?
      • It's even funnier for Abaranger's counterpart, Power Rangers: Dino Thunder because thanks to Composite Character, Tommy Oliver, Burai's occidental counterpart is on the same team as Trent, Abarekiller's counterpart. Some of the plotpoint about Trent are the same as Tommy (new kid in town, adopted child, became evil because he was brainwashed instead of being in full control of their action like Burai and Abarekiller...). Tommy was also a white ranger. And just like Tommy, Trent was Spared By Adaptation. Nattery subbullet
    • Some fans have remarked that Mei's schoolgirl disguise made her resemble Usagi from Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, a later Toei production. "Sailor Fuku exists"
    • The character Boi would be replaced by a girl in Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. Keep?
    • Hisashi Sakai, who plays a child Burai in flashback, would play Kou in Gosei Sentai Dairanger the following year. Both characters were adapted into Tommy Oliver in Power Rangers. Actor shoehorn
    • As mentioned below, fans attempted a letter writing campaign to bring Burai back, which didn't work. The same would happen to his Power Rangers counterpart Tommy with more successful results. Referencing other examples is a kinda big nono
    • The first closing theme contains the line "Earth is round and blue. That's something everyone knows" long before the recent reemergence of the flat Earth believers into popular consciousness. Examples Are Not Recent and also is a bit of ROCEJ violation?
    • Unlike most other Sentai, Zyuranger did not get The Movie. However, as a result of being adapted, Zyuranger-derived suits and characters took the lead both in the first Power Rangers movie and The Remake Power Rangers film, both of which were imported to Japan. The latter's Japanese premiere was even attended by Yuta Mochizuki (Geki) along with Takumi Kizu (Lucky), the Red actor of the contemporary Uchu Sentai Kyuranger. The latter part feels a bit unnecessary, don't know
    • Burai's awakening happened on June 19th, and needless to say their first encounter with him does not go well for the Zyurangers, with things only getting worse as the story arc goes on. Nearly 20 years later, Don't Hug Me I'm Scared uses that exact same date as their Arc Number, with progressively more messed up things happening to the protagonists as things go on. What's more, in the very first episode the villain decries green as uncreative. What color does Burai, the first sixth ranger in all of Sentai, wear? Fan Myopia
    • In Zyuranger Red Ranger Geki finds out that he was adopted and had a long-lost older brother, Burai, who turns out to be a Sixth Ranger. In Power Rangers Zeo, Red Ranger Tommy (who was previously Burai's counterpart) might've already known he was adopted, but he does find out that he had a long-lost older brother, David, who might've not been a Sixth Ranger, but was used as a red herring for one. Sorta keep?
    • During the second episode, a TV newscaster claims Bandora and her minions to be space aliens, and is quickly shot down by his co-anchors. Gotta give him credit, though: He was very, very close. Keep?

Number one fan of characters that appear only once and ultimately were a recurring character either in disguise or trying a new image.
