Go To

The Hindsight tropes, Hilarious in Hindsight, Harsher in Hindsight, and Heartwarming in Hindsight, are among the most misused Audience Reaction tropes on this site. Many people don't understand that the tropes require more than just "This happened, so that happened", and end up adding examples which either lack connection or the substance that makes them funny/serious/not-so-funny/heartwarming. Some of them may be suited better for other tropes (ex: Life Imitates Art), while some may not belong on TV Tropes at all (such as ones involving politicians, due to Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment).

Please report any Hindsight example that you feel are questionable, and we'll analyze them to see if they are actually examples or not.

Remember that the Hindsight tropes are Audience Reactions. That means if an example under review discusses significant fan response pointing out the hindsight, the example can't be cut solely for being too tenuous for this thread.

    Common NOT in Hindsight examples
  • Creator's character/portrayal dies in work and then creator dies in real life, unless their fictional death is closely similar to their real one (such as Billy Bob Joe portraying a character who dies from pancreatic cancer, then Billy Bob dies from pancreatic cancer himself)
  • Mundane word related to something terrible (such as "corona" or "Epstein") unless there's more to the connection (such as someone named "Corona" having the flu)
  • Creator appears in work then becomes more controversial later on.
  • A common event (such as a typical natural disaster) happens in work, then happens in real life (unless they are closely similar, such as the event happening to the same area in both reality and fiction around the same time) For once, not everything related to disease has to do with COVID-19, not everything related to racism and Police Brutality has to do with George Floyd and Black Lives Matter, and not everything related to sexual abuse has to do with #MeToo.
  • A common/generic concept was used in this work and then later reused in that work (too loose for a connection, unless the concept is so unique it's identified with the work)
  • Two actors appear together then do so in another work
  • Hindsight examples involving recent events, due to them often being shoehorns. Specifically:
    • COVID-19 examples, before 75% of the population has returned to normal
    • George Floyd/2020 Black Lives Matter examples, before protests have declined
  • Examples which fall guilty of Older Than They Think, such as "Make X Great Again" slogans. Aside from violating the ROCEJ, this slogan has been in use since the 1940s.
  • Characters using slurs which are treated as annoying at worst in the work, but is now harsher due to how severe the slur is made now. Discrimination has always existed with that slur. (May qualify for Values Dissonance if work is at least 20 years old.)

Note: As of January 2022, "Funny Aneurysm" Moment is no longer separate from Harsher in Hindsight.
  • The former redirects to the latter and all wicks to the former (with the exception of ones on archive pages and the YMMV Redirects index) must either be moved to the latter (if they're valid) or removed (if they're invalid).
  • The subpages for the former are still accessible from this page. After a subpage for "Funny Aneurysm" Moment has been completely cleaned up, turn it into a redirect to the Harsher in Hindsight subpage for the same medium to preserve inbounds.

Eternals

  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Some fans are saying Ikaris is a better Superman than Zack Snyder's version.
    • A blackly comical type - Kro wrapping Thena up in tentacles while she sports a tripped-out look on her face, brings to mind Japanese hentai tentacles.

I dont see hindsight there.

The first one seems to be a cross between Spiritual Adaptation, Even Better Alternative (idk the actual trope for that) and Memetic Mutation

The second one is ... What?

The "In General" folder of HilariousInHindsight.Star Wars has some "a non-Star Wars work saw this coming"-type entries that would fit on another page, if anywhere; could someone please cut and paste them there?

This is on The Princess Diaries:

  • Harsher in Hindsight: Gary Marshall’s decision to move the setting from New York to San Francisco was probably for the best, especially since 9/11 occurred a month after the film’s release.

Have some Funny Aneurysm Moments that need to be reviewed, this is for So This Is Basically...:

  • The Danny Phantom video opens with "Have you ever wondered what it would be like if Spider-Man was dead?". Thanks to Avengers: Infinity War and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Peter Parker has died twice in movies released since then.
  • In his video for Star vs. which was made shortly after the season 3 premiere, he expresses some optimism for the future of the show, and begs it to "please don't go back to the bad stuff". Many Star fans consider season 4 (the final season) to be the worst season of the series with an underwhelming finale, and Jello himself dropped the show prior to the finale.
  • Having Butch Hartman cameo in the Danny Phantom video made for a nice bit of Parody Assistance when it was first released. Nowadays, with Hartman getting caught up in numerous controversies that have left his large fanbase dwindling rapidly, the cameo is cringeworthy at best.

Alright.

  • 1: This is kinda a stretch. Peter has died a few times in various continuities.
  • 2: Might be okay

  • 3: Uh don't think that's an example.

Thanks. I do have the other examples on hold if you want to review those too:

  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • A moment in his So This Is Basically Miraculous Ladybug video has him bring up that Chloe is the real villain and that Ladybug should just let her die. While this would have lightened up with her becoming Queen Bee, her actions in Season 3's finale might help cement what Jello suggests...
    • The joke in So This Is Basically Sonic the Hedgehog about Sonic losing all his rings (and potentially losing a life) over a stubbed toe takes a darker twist in Epithet Erased, an animated series developed by Jello, where Mera actually breaks a toe when she stubs it, and could have easily shattered her whole foot, due to having a superpower that also makes her whole body extremely fragile.

  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • In the Overwatch video, Jello jokes that the game has no diversity because there's no girl robots, then questions if girl robots even exist. Around eight months after the video was made, Orisa, a female Omnic, was added to the roster.
    • In the Rick and Morty video, Jello jokes about the series' tendency to have Mood Whiplash and end episodes on a somber tone with an obscure song as background music. Jello further snarks in the captions how fans will find a way to relate this back to Evil Morty. This is exactly what wound up happening three weeks after the video.
    • There is so much that Jello "predicted" about Fire Emblem: Three Houses well before it came out in his Fire Emblem video. However, whether he accidentally predicted them in jest, or rather pointed out the tropes Fire Emblem consistently uses (being a heavily-self-referential series) and Three Houses simply used them again, is a topic for debate. Most notably, however, the video depicts the character of the Gharnef archetype as an attractive young woman. At that point, in all FE games published when the video was made, the Gharnef archetype has been exclusively male and typically elderly, a pattern which would actually be broken in Three Houses by the character Rhea in the Black Eagle route.
    • Jello mentioned in his Ace Attorney video that he hadn't gotten around to playing the second Investigations game, but that he'd heard it was supposed to be good. He went on to play through it on his Twitch channel and encountered most of his complaints from the video in spades.
      • The judge declares Phoenix's client guilty when Phoenix fails to counteract some Insane Troll Logic theorizing that the defendant dropped the bullet from a skyscraper, and it fell on the victim's head. In The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures, which wouldn't reach America for another three years, the fourth Adventure declares Ryunosuke's client innocent after he proves that a juror threw the knife out of a window, and it landed in the victim's back.
    • In the RWBY video, Qrow shouting and singing as a crow was a small running gag in the video. The DC comic that was written half a year after featured his sister Raven doing the exact same thing.
      • Also in the RWBY video, Penny appears in a fictional cover of Volume 7. When Volume 7 finally aired, Penny did return to the series... though Brendan admitted on Youtube that he already knew this as he'd auditioned for the series and Penny's return was spoiled in some audition packets.
    • In the "Pokémon" video, he says every type has a gym except Dark, which finally got its own gym in Pokémon Sword and Shield.
      • Additionally, his hypothetical Pokémon games are named "Mustard and Ketchup". The Isle of Armor expansion pass would end up introducing a major character named Mustard.
    • In the Animal Crossing video, he states that the next game will be the same as New Leaf with a few changes. The next game, New Horizons, revealed that it will be making several changes to the series formula.
      • Adding to this, some of Jello's commentary of things that could be improved onnote  were addressed in ''New Horizons".
    • In the Sonic The Hedgehog video, Sonic mocks Movie Sonic, saying he isn't even good enough to be his fake. This video was released before the official redesign was revealed, and when the movie actually came out, plenty of people stated that they liked it more than the actual series as of late. In short, Movie Sonic did make Sonic eat those words!
    • In the Miraculous Ladybug video, Jello jokes that the show could probably win an Emmy if they killed off major antagonist Chloe. Then, in 2020, another show that the series covered got nominated for a Primetime Emmy for an episode that saw the (temporary) death of a major antagonist.
    • In the Jojos Bizarre Adventure video, a recurring joke was showing previews from Part 9, while the manga was still on Part 8. Part 9 has officially been announced.

[up]Regarding the Part 9 example, that one can probably be cut. I don't recall many people earnestly believing that JoJolion would be the end of the reboot series, and joking about how weird Part 9 would be was pretty common years before the announcement. It's like making a joke about The Simpsons getting another season and then acting shocked when it gets another season.

Be kind.

The RWBY example is shoehorning. The Qrow skit is pretty much the funniest thing in it, and it's already a riff of Raven's attitude in the main show. The comic coming out later doesn't make it funny. It already was.

The Penny reference seems to be a stealth spoiler since they admitted they knew it was coming. Besides, most of the fandom was expecting the Atlas Arc to bring her back — she was an Atlesian robot, after all.

This was just added to YMMV.Darby O Gill And The Little People.

  • Harsher in Hindsight: Darby's remark during the climax about how it's better for the old to die than the young becomes a lot harder to hear when you learn Albert Sharpe (Darby) lived to the ripe old age of 84, while Janet Munro (Katie, to whom Darby was referring) didn't even make it to 40.

From Royal Canadian Air Farce

  • "Funny Aneurysm" Moment: One Season 7 sketch saw Donald Trump seeking Preston Manning's advice for going into politics, even dismissing Pat Buchanan at one point for idolizing dictators and being "a Hitler lover", before opting to stay out of politics due to Manning's unusual advice. ... And? Or this entry just "Trump + politics"?
    • A 2001 "Chicken Cannon News" sketch had a mock sponsor ad from the Australian Tourism Board with the tagline "Where our smoking section is the entire country", in reference to the then-still raging Black Christmas Bushfires. Darkly comic in 2001, horrifyingly insensitive after 2019. Not sure, since it was referencing ongoing wildfires at the time

This is on Tv Trash under "Funny Aneurysm" Moment:

  • During his review of the Encylopedia Brown made for TV movie, he cited the reason the conflict in the Middle East can't be resolved was because the environment was inhospitable to flowers, referencing a scene in the movie explaining that the town of Idaville's founder stopped a battle during the Civil War by planting a flower in the middle of the battlefield, causing both sides to leave the town alone for the rest of the war. This joke referencing the Middle East is less funny considering a month after the episode was uploaded, the American troops left Afghanistan on President Biden's (though the deal was initially set up by President Trump) orders, causing the Taliban to overtake the country.

I think the Simpsons meme is much more common than the SU one, and I've seen more Simpsons jokes about the SU thing than vice versa. My metric is that watching the old thing will make you think of the new thing, but I think here it'd more often be the other way around.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.
