Hate Sink cleanup

Go To

The main concern of a Hate Sink is whether the narrative treats the character as someone intended to be despised.

The character in question must actually display detestable qualities, and be hated by other characters at least, or treated by the narrative like someone you are supposed to hate. The author's declared intent cements an example, but is not needed if the narrative itself treats the character as someone who is supposed to be hated.

A Hate Sink may have charismatic traits, a troubled past, or complexity, but in order for this trope to be in effect, such traits must be de-emphasized by the narrative in favour of their detestable traits.

Yeah, Seryu, like Katejina from Mobile Suit Victory Gundam, is more of an Unintentionally Unsympathetic scrappy.

So, [tdown] Seryu, and [tdown] Esdeath because she is also on that page even though she is not a hate sink.

On a somewhat related note, the error that SkyCat32 made in assuming Seryu was a man (not calling you out or anything) made me look back and realize just how skewed the gender ratio is. I mean, look at the main pages- the vast majority of the characters are men, even in female-led series. Even in Agame Ga Kill itself, General Esdeath and Seryu are portrayed more sympathetically than, say, Prime Minister Honest and his son Syura.

Not trying to make any profound statement, just something I noticed. Probably just because Females Are More Innocent in the minds of some writers.

Also, leaning towards yes for Immortan.

One of these days, all of you will accept me as your supreme overlord.

So in turns out that Rambo wasn't waiting for a pending write-up. So here's this entry up on the list:

  • Rambo:
    • First Blood: Art Galt is a small-town deputy with a fondness for Police Brutality. When John Rambo is arrested for vagrancy, Galt decides to rough him up for fun. This culminates in him blasting Rambo with a hose and trying to forcibly dry-shave him. This triggers Rambo's PTSD, and he kicks Galt across a room. Galt vows to kill him for this, even ignoring his boss's orders to take Rambo alive. Even his death, which was accidental, highlights how detestable he is, as it only makes the manhunt against Rambo more extreme.
    • Major Tint writeup.

Keep in mind that if I see "[Insert X] write up" underneath an entry bracket like this, my first instinct is to assume that they'll be a future write up soon and I should wait till it's done. If there is already a write up, best recommendation is copy and paste it in the draft to refine and inspect how it will overall look.

New proposal, from Kindergarten Cop.

Who's the candidate?

Mr. Sullivan, father of a young boy named Zach.

What does he do?

Zach seems like a quiet, sullen boy when Detective John Kimble enters his kindergarten ckass. Kimboe suspects he's the son of drug boss Cullen Crisp, and therefore the boy he's there to find. However, it turns out that Mr. Sullivan actually regularly beats Zach and his wife. The day after Kimble learns this, he finds Sullivan ajd beats the snot out of him, only rekenting and having the school press charges when he sees his class watching.

Personally despicable?

Beats his wife and son.

Redeeming qualities?

He's onscreen for a minute or so, and only mentioned briefly, so his abusive nature is his only characterization. Hell, even the principal that couldn't do anything about the abuse commends Kimble for taking initiative.

Verdict?

[tup] Sullivan.

Question regarding our standards; So the Complete Monster Thread has a rule regarding fanfics and whether one can be a CM in fanfics. The rule is "As long as their heinous actions are believable within the canon setting". For example, something like having an Albert Fish copycat in an MLP Fic wouldn't be brought up to the thread.

I'm wondering if that same standard applies or should apply to Hate Sink characters.

And the reason I bring this up is because I have two more The Loud House candidatws from M Rated drama fics on my mind but those fics deal with subject matter that you sure as shit wouldn't see in the shows canon. One of whom I'd bring up as a CM if it wern't for the above mentioned rule.

Than again, I did bring up Nick Lambert, who is from a fic that contains and discusses things like suicide, sexual assault, depression, anxiety and PTSD. Point is, I may be asking this question too late

And I agree, sure Esdeath is a 99% Monster. But I agree that she doesn't belong on this trope. And yes, this is from someone who really love Esdeath btw and I can vouch it.

Well, I think that we should pay as little attention as possible to Ron the Death Eater type candidates, or at least note how diferrent they are from canon counterparts. As for grimdark schlock candidates, I’m inclined to say that we kinda have to include them, because this trope is not YMMV.

[up] My deepest sympathy, Stel. I have cousins who grew up with an asshole of a father, and it was tough for them especially, but for the rest of my family as well. I hope your father at least hates himself for how he treated you.

Alright, gonna make my first effort-post here, from one of the first animanga I ever really got into.

What's the Work?

Rosario + Vampire is a fantasy harem manga that revolves around young Tsukune Aono, a human boy who ends up in a school for monsters called Yokai Academy, and bonds with a number of monsters, especially vampiress Moka Akashiya, whose true form is hidden via a magic rosary. Though it starts off as a light-hearted comedy, it eventually becomes Darker and Edgier, especially in Season 2, where we meet the anti-human organization Fairy Tail, and their leader, Moka's stepmother Gyokuro Shuzen.

Who is She? What Does She Do?

The second wife of Moka's father, Issa Shuzen, and mother of two of Moka's sisters, Kahlua and Kokoa, Gyokuro grew to resent Moka's mother Akasha due to Issa's love for her, and thus grew to hate Moka as well. This hatred extended to her seeking to undo Akasha's dream of monster/human co-existence as well. After Akasha's supposed death sealing away the First Ancestor Vampire, Alucard, Gyokuro helped form the anti-human orgnization, Fairy Tale, with the intend of starting a war between humans and monsters solely to spite the late Akasha's dream. In addition, she also conditioned her peaceful eldest daughter, Kahlua, into become a vicious killing machine, forcing her to kill many people since she was a child, regardless of how much Kahlua hated doing it.

In the present, Gyokuro tasks her followers with sowing conflicts in the human world as well as battling Moka and her friends, all the while planning to awaken Alucard to assist in her war on humanity, creating a replica of Moka's rosary to control him. Finally having Moka kidnapped, Gyokuro seeks to use her rosary to awaken Alucard. Though her friends infiltrate her fortress, Moka's rosary breaks and Alucard awakens. Confronted with Moka's friends, including Kokoa, Kahlua begs her mother not to have her kill her little sister. Gyokuro's response? She simply laughs at Kahlua's softness before ordering her to do just that, donning a Slasher Smile all the way as a grief-stricken Kahlua goes berserk and attacks her sister. She then summons the Shuzen family assassination squad to assist, but when they lose the upper hand, she reveals that she had infected them with bits of Alucard, transforming them into mindless ghouls. This horrifies Moka, stunned that Gyokuro would do this to her own family, to which Gyokuro then reveals that Tsukune is at risk of transforming as well. When Moka begs her to save him, Gyokuro seemingly concedes....only to mockingly reveal she intends to have him transform and keep him as a pet, laughing and striking the crying Moka when she attempts to retaliate.

Fighting and seemingly defeated by Tsukune, Gyokuro summons the rosary and reveals she intends to crash her fortress into Tokyo to start her war, finally revealing her motive lay in her deep-seated jealousy of Akasha, before using her assimilation abilities to merge with Alucard, planning to become immortal and unstoppable. Getting Moka in her grasp, Gyokuro tries to finish her off, but finds herself frozen in place. Touhou Fuhai, one of the Dark Lords, reveals to Gyokuro that the rosary she created wasn't really controlling Alucard, and was in fact tied to Akasha's essence, and as such, couldn't be used to harm Moka. At Moka's mercy, Gyokuro attempts to save her own life by pointing out that without her, the fortress will crash into the human realm, secretly mocking Moka's weakness and plotting to kill her and her friends once she has been saved. However, the fortress' descent is stopped, and thus, Moka removes the rosario from Gyokuro. The wicked vampiress spends her last moments screaming Moka's name in anger before being consumed by Alucard.

What makes then personally despicable?

Gyokuro embodies Evil Is Petty, with her entire motive revolving around her hatred of Akasha. Everything, from her attempted genocide against humanity, to the pain she inflicts on her family, especially her daughters, biological or otherwise, is all born from the fact she was jealous that her husband, Issa, loved Akasha more than her (which, as was pointed out off-site, was likely because Gyokuro was so wicked in the first place). She doesn't even appear to love Issa in particular, locking him away inside Fairy Tail's fortress. She also shows no love for her daughters; the closest is Kahlua, and even then, she clearly favors her for her killing prowess more than anything.

Evil Is Cool traits? Complexity? Freudian Excuse?

She is a vampire, which are among the strongest monsters around, and thus she is very powerful, but her pettiness and cruelty overshadows any coolness. Her backstory isn't played for tragedy; by contrast, the actual Big Bad, Alucard, has a genuine Freudian Excuse of his kingdom being wiped out by humans when he only wanted coexistence, and has actual redeeming traits such as loving Akasha like a daughter and saving his minions from death, including Kahlua, which only makes Gyokuro's lack of any true affection for others and petty villainy even more apparent.

Verdict?

I think she may count.

  • Kindergarten Cop: Mr. Sullivan is the father of a kindergartener named Zach, whom he regularly beats alomg with his wife. When Detective John Kimble goes undercover as a kindergarten teacher to find the son of a crime boss, he suspects Zach is the kid because of just how emotionally distraught the abuse makes him. Eventually, Kimble discovers the truth and beats Sullivan into a pulp, only stopping because his class starts watching. Even the school's principal, who was unable to do anything about the abuse, congratulates Kimble for taking him down.

New proposal, from I Come in Peace.

Who's the candidate?

Victor Manning, a drug boss.

What does he do?

Years before the film, Manning killed Jack Caine's partner, a favt he taunts him about to this day. Caine has soent years trying to catch him for this, but he seems to constantly weasel his way out of trouble. Mannibg ends up stealing stealing some heroin from a police storage locker via a bombing which kills several offocers. Caone and an FBI agent sent to solve the bombing pursue Manning, but he escapes and the film moves on to an alien drug dealer. Last we see of Manning is him sending Caine a postcard from a tropical island to taunt him about his escape.

Yep. Karma Houdini.

Personally despicable?

Murderer, drug dealer, and general smug prick.

Redeeming qualities?

He may pretend to be an urbane crime lord, but he doesn't really show anythong positive, just garish rich people crap.

Verdict?

Um, so I messed up. I didn't realize that Mengele had already been approved as a CM. But I think my EP from that thread would work here.

I've wanted to do a song candidate for a while, so I'll try an easy one to start out with. I really don't have much time to spend on here anymore, but may as well give this a shot.

What's the work?

Slayer are (soon to be "were", thankfully) one of the "big four" of the Thrash Metal genre, and generally the Darker and Edgier one out. Their lyrics consist of anti-religion, Hollywood Satanism, serial killers, and other subjects that helped pave the way for the Death Metal genre. The album in question is Reign In Blood, and the first track, "Angel of Death", the subject of which is an infamous, depraved Nazi "scientist" who you all probably know and hate.

Who is Josef Mengele? What has he done?

Josef Mengele. The Angel of Death. Quite possibly worse than Hitler himself. A "physician" at Auschwitz, he performed horrible experiments on numerous prisoners. The song switches between his POV and that of a third-person narrator who is clearly disgusted by his experiments, referring to him as a "butcher" and a "sadist", and expressing pity for the victims, albeit as much as one can in a metal song.

Some of the experiments are detailed as follows:

Surgery, with no anesthesia
Feel the knife pierce you intensely

Pumped with fluid, inside your brain
Pressure in your skull begins pushing through your eyes
Burning flesh, drips away
Test of heat burns your skin, your mind starts to boil
Frigid cold, cracks your limbs
How long can you last
In this frozen water burial?
Sewn together, joining heads
Just a matter of time
til you rip yourselves apart
Millions laid out in their
Crowded tombs

Injecting cells, dying eyes
Feeding on the screams of
The mutants he's creating

Whenever Mengele is narrating, he's clearly taking pride in his work, (The way that I want you to die/Slow death, immense decay/Showers that cleanse you of your life ... How long can you last in this frozen water burial ... Just a matter of time/Till you rip yourselves apart) and dehumanizes his victims in typical Nazi fashion (Inferior, no use to mankind). And wasn't the real Mengele prone to experimenting on children?

I think you get the point.

What makes him personally despicable?

He was a Nazi and a horrible sadist, and one who experimented on children, to boot. That about sums it up.

Evil Is Cool traits? Complexity? Freudian Excuse?

What, is that some sort of a joke? It's Josef Mengele. Slayer — and the lyrics themselves — condemned him as nothing more than the horrible butcher and pseudo-scientist he was.

Verdict?

Keeper.
