Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

[tup] Yuko and Curry.

Second one for APGtE, tried to keep this short.

    Relevant factions
  • The Dread Empire of Praes, ruled by Dread Empress Malicia and her Black Knight.
  • The Kingdom of Callow, conquered and ruled by the Black Knight in all but name. He later hands it over to his apprentice, Catherine Foundling, and she officially breaks ties from Praes.
  • The Principate of Procer, ruled by First Prince Cordelia Hasenbach. She orders an invasion of Callow and Praes hoping the conflict will get the bickering forces of good to unite, in preparation for the Dead King invading. Later makes peace when she realizes the Dead King is already invading.
  • The Dead King, an omnicidal zombie king.

As previously stated in the last EP, the Black Knight and Dread Empress Malicia conquered Callow with their Legions of Terror. But armies can only do so much in a setting where tropes are literal laws of fate. What you really need are supervillains.

So entered Black's Five-Man Band: The Calamities. Consisting of himself, the Warlock, the Ranger, the Captainnote , and the Assassin, the five quickly decimated all of their enemies. Unfortunately, the issue with taking over an entire kingdom is that rebellions inevitably pop up.

Enter the unofficial sixth Calamity, Black's one-woman spy network and bureaucracy: the Scribe.

Who is Eudokia, the Scribe?

Starting out as a homeless orphan (as shown in this bonus chapter, which doesn't require too much background knowledge and is an all-around amazing read if you're bored), Eudokia was taken in one day by a mysterious school... for assassins.

Sure, why not.

She was forced to partner with a friend and fight to the death a la Squid Game, but miraculously survived after seemingly being strangled to death. The school's headmaster decided they might as well get some use out of her, and sent Eudokia to be trained to become the school's next scribe.

This backfired, as Eudokia's access to the school's records allowed her to orchestrate conflicts between the various teachers over the years, culminating in her getting access to their kitchens and poisoning the entire staff and student body.

From there she starts her own assassination business, coming into the Name of Scribe. Names, on top of being common character archetypes, also give you superpowers. Most important is her ability to "Inscribe" instructions into corpses. It starts out with simple commands, but she learns that if she can recover the corpse and rip the Inscription out, it will become refined, leading to her corpse-puppets becoming intelligent.

While working on a contract in the slave nation of Stygia, Eudokia ran into the Black Knight. The situation somehow escalated into overthrowing the entire Stygian government, and Scribe, surprised to find someone who shares her icy pragmatism, decided to join Black's Calamities. With the help of the Warlock, Eudokia's Inscriptions were further refined to create a creature they dubbed the Assassin. It would serve as The Dreaded fifth official member of their group to draw attention away from her.

Eudokia is Black's one-woman bureaucracy, managing the nitty gritty statecraft details of Callow and allowing him to rule without the need for a capital — the series places a lot of focus on all those nitty gritty details, making it clear that ruling an entire kingdom without a capital city is very difficult. Eudokia effortlessly simplifies the process, allowing Black to do more important things like killing potential heroes.

Eudokia is also Black's spymaster, managing their "Eyes of the Empire" (spies). One of her most ingenious ideas was to actually tattoo some of these Eyes with... well, eyes. Rebellions that catch a few of these assholes become overconfident, allowing her to slip in even more, non-tattooed spies. With her help, Black has located and killed hundreds heroes while squashing countless rebellions.

Assassin is used to murder enemies of the Empire across the continent and keep the Callowan criminal element under control. Black wasn't stupid enough to think he could eliminate all crime, but the near-annihilation of the Assassins Guild by Eudokia quickly got them to agree to play by the Empire's rules. Like with the Eyes of the Empire, the game with Assassin is misdirection. She has it kill its victims in morbidly hilarious ways, like drowning one lord in his own chamber pot or arranging the corpses of other assassins in "speak no evil, see no evil, hear no evil" positions in the middle of a rescued noble's bedroom. This infamous signature distracts from Eudokia's more covert operations, allowing her to accomplish countless, seemingly natural murders with no one even thinking to question them.

Fast-forward to the present, and Black has taken Catherine Foundling as his Squire. He sends her to fight a rebellion in Callow while the Calamities handle said rebellion's ringleaders. Black has Eudokia assassinate their figurehead to divide the remaining leadership and lower morale, causing more assorted chaos in the process. It's made clear through all this that Eudokia could have easily wiped them out at any point, only refraining because Black wanted to manipulate the narrative into an Anti-Climax so the main "plot" of the rebellion focuses on Cat.

Later, this Praesi noble named Akua Sahelian rebels from the Empire. Cat and Black storm her fortress, Black is apparently captured, and Cat is forced to stab him due to shenanigans... only for "Black" to reveal himself to be Assassin, with the real Black away capturing Akua's father to give Cat a chance to stop her.

Fast-forward some more and Black decides to raid Procer in a suicide mission to give Cat a chance at beating their crusade, but is eventually captured. Eudokia, reasoning he'll be brought to the Proceran capital, splits from the Legions to contact all of Malicia's Eyes of the Empire in the region to enact a coup. She first forges letters from the First Prince's greatest political rival and sends them to various rebellious elements, preying on their fears of the First Prince trying to turn herself into a Queen (the First Prince is elected, so her extreme efforts to get everyone to follow her goddamn orders so they can fight the invading Dead King aren't exactly being taken well) while leaking Black's plans to get around her Auger cousin's visions.

And a few days before the coup is to take place... Eudokia receives word from a freed Black, ordering her to stop whatever psychotic plan she's been cooking up.

As Malicia's agents go forward with the plan, taking advantage of the chaos to try to set the city on fire, Eudokia sends her own people to kill them. The coup is stopped, and Black has her (very begrudgingly) give up all of Malicia's agents in Callow to Cat as a sort of "please don't kill me for almost obliterating all your hopes and dreams" gift. However, something's a bit off about all this — Eudokia is hyper-competence incarnate. How could she have failed to stop the plot?

Cat realizes that Eudokia helped Malicia orchestrate the coup so Black would finally see that she's gone too far and kill her. You wouldn't think he'd need that extra push after she's already allied with the Dead King, but...

"He would have forgiven her, Catherine Foundling," Scribe said. "Without ever using the word forgive, but that would be the truth of it nonetheless. No matter what any of us said, he'd make peace again."
"Look, I'm not going to argue he doesn't get sentimental on occasion," I said. "To be blunt, there's a reason I'm still breathing. But he's still Black. There's lines, and if he has to choose between the Praes he wants and Malicia-"
"He'll try for both," Scribe said. "Offer her to be his Chancellor, another leap of faith: trusting that she would be one of the few who never schemed the death of their tyrant."
"That would not be acceptable," I sharply said. "If she takes a ship across the Tyrian Sea I won't pursue, but she doesn't get to stay anywhere near the reins of power. Not after all the shit she's pulled. He knows that."
"It won't matter. He always forgives," Scribe said, and under the calm tone there was old and cold anger. "Malicia. Ranger. Even Warlock, who spurned one of the few ways the Empire could be corrected without steel in hand out of sheer petty apathy. He always forgives them and takes up the work instead. It will kill him, Catherine. It has been killing him for years, but this once he might as well slit his own throat. I will not have it."

Black eventually puts this together himself. While she's successfully convinced him to overthrow Malicia, he fires her as politely as possible before leaving with Ranger.

Two year time skip!

As Cat goes to war with the Dead King and Black orchestrates the Praesi civil war, Eudokia focuses on cementing control over the Eyes — Malicia naturally has the bulk, but she manages to take over the fringe elements. The Assassin Inscription is lost furthering a succession crisis in another nation. When she returns to Black, however, he once again politely rebuffs her and encourages her to find her own ambition. Since he's a dead end, Eudokia turns to Cat, convincing her to not immediately murder her by providing a ton of up to date information on what's happening with the rest of the continent. Also accurate maps, which are rare and incredibly useful for a military campaign in a medieval setting.

Getting a new Assassin, Eudokia uses it for a series of important murders once Cat inevitably sets her sights on Praes, coming damnably close to killing Malicia herself. Yadda yadda yadda, more fighting, and eventually it becomes clear that Black has manipulated everyone into completely destroying the Dread Empire, with him as the leader of whatever comes next. Unfortunately, there's one small problem.

Even after every horrible thing she's done, Black will do anything to keep his old friend safe.

Black forces Cat to kill him — a muzzled Malicia would be the only other person capable of keeping Praes in line — and an enraged Eudokia is killed by Cat's invisible bodyguard while trying to avenge him.

Is she magnificent?

An argument could be made that she's too devoted to Black — she doesn't recognize the massive problems that would emerge from him becoming Dread Emperor, is murderously fanatical in defending him from any perceived threats, and when told to find her own path she just slinks back to his apprentice.

However, that's seriously discounting just how competent she is. Eudokia's efficiency is the only reason Black has been able to effectively rule Callow for the past two decades, and her spy network is one of the most expansive on the continent. Her backstory kicks ass, Assassin is utterly terrifying, and she always proves to be invaluable to whomever she's working for at the moment, all the while loyal to the one person who actually understands her and her cold pragmatism to the very end.

Is she a bastard?

The Procer coup alone risked sparking a massive civil war, and with the Dead King on the march it would have likely ended in the destruction of the entire nation. And that's not even considering the hundreds of rebels she's helped Black kill over the decades.

Final verdict?

Another easy yes for the Webweaver.

Yes to Curry and Eudokia.

I'm gonna have, I think, five more Metalocalypse candidates over the new few days. They are all one shot characters so I'll be able to blow through them rather quickly. Of course, the early seasons leaned far more into the Black Comedy, so at the same time I'm worried about things getting a bit too ridiculous. For example, one guy is a musician that opened up a rehab clinic and seeks to make everyone in the world sober, all because he wants them to experience the hell of sobriety like him since he can't drink or do drugs anymore.

  • Metalocalypse
    • Charles Foster Offdensen is the manager of Dethklok and the man who singlehandedly keeps their multitrillion dollar enterprise operating and successful. Charles is a genius accountant who plans the band's ridiculously complex and expensive concert venues and the wide variety of mass market merchandising. Utterly professional, he also ensures the five manchildren that form the band are satisfied despite giving him no respect and proves a brilliant tactician and leader that commands the undyingly loyal Klokateers in protecting the band from threats like the Revengencers and the mysterious Tribunal. Beneath his calm exterior, Charles is also a ruthless businessman who has everyone from digital pirates to insulting media kidnapped and imprisoned for threatening the band's welfare. Secretly, Charles has been working with the Church of the Black Klok to ensure the culmination of the Metalocalypse Prophecy so that his cherished band can ascend to godhood and stave off the doomsday sought by the demonic Mr. Salacia.
    • Magnus Hammersmith was once the rhythm guitarist for Dethklok until a sudden bout of violent outbursts led him to being kicked out of the band. Magnus swore vengeance for the pain of his shattered brotherhood and for being left behind as the band became world renowned. Later joining the Masked Metal Assassin and his Revengencers, Magnus met his replacement Toki Wartooth incognito at a band camp and became his closest friend after saving his life from bullies. He uses this connection to set the band up for a surprise attack at their record head's funeral and kidnaps Toki to be used as bait. Psychologically tormenting Toki, he reveals his intent to imprison the band and have them fade into obscurity like everyone else they abandoned. Seeing the Assassin's brutality ultimately causes Magnus to turn against him and finally end his own life when he sees he was the true villain.
    • Ishnifus Meaddle is the High Holy Priest of the Church of the Black Klok and dedicates his life to ensuring the Metalocalypse Prophecy comes to fruition. Seeking to stave off Doomsday, Ishnifus has secretly kept Dethklok safe countless times while allowing their Curse to kill countless people during their concerts. He would later resurrect Charles after his death and make him invisible to the sight of Salacia in the process, all the while training Charles to take his place as the next High Priest. When Toki is kidnapped and Charles is unable to help, Ishnifus leads the band to the rescue and provides a distraction to allow them to escape. Staring down execution by the Masked Metal Assassin, he dies without fear knowing his life's work would soon reach its conclusion.

Work: Inanimate Insanity

Candidate: Taco is an ex-contestant who has a talent for pulling the strings in her favor. During the events of Season 1, she spent the entirety of the season as a mentally challenged contestant with no arms and an obsession over lemons. As revealed in the Season 1 finale, it was all a ploy to gain sympathy from the viewers and carry her to the end, which indeed worked, alongside gaining an emotional shield in the form of Pickle, who unwittingly kept those skeptical of her from finding out her true self. Unfortunately for her, she is ultimately defeated by OJ, who wins the million dollar prize, but she flees and vows that this isn't the end. She ultimately returns halfway through Season 2 and strikes up an alliance with newbie contestant Microphone, reading into her self-esteem issues and promising to help her win the contest and gain admiration, at the cost of half of her winnings. Microphone accepts, and Taco proceeds to supply her with plans to weigh the challenge in her favor, some more physically or mentally brutal than others, and even provides a failsafe when Knife ends up finding out about their alliance. Throughout it all, she retains a calm, mentor-like attitude with Microphone, until Taco goes against their promise and commits a raid on the Light Shimmers for the sake of retrieving Fan, killing Test Tube in the process and getting her to distrust Microphone post-revival. This causes Microphone to see right through Taco's ruse, leave her behind, and forfeit the challenge, leaving Taco to solemnly reflect on her actions, as she had grown fond of Microphone throughout the manipulation.

Think on Their Feet: Season 1 has Taco break out of her ruse when she knows it will help her win the challenge, knowing that there's nobody in sight to see her real self. She also uses the stupid persona to her team's advantage when they least expect it, which helps her retain her popularity throughout the season. Come Season 2, and Taco's main character trait besides her manipulation is how much of a master tactician she is. All of her plans are designed for the sake of pushing Microphone further along in the competition, which work 90% of the time, from painting Balloon as untrustworthy to have him be an easy elimination target, to raiding Test Tube's lab to find any inventions that could assist them (ultimately settling on invisibility bow ties), to trying to strike up an alliance with Knife to try and get him off their backs. The only time Taco ends up being reckless is during the Light Shimmer raid, but to her credit, Test Tube had already beaten them to the ship, putting their plan into jeopardy, and everything beforehand was set up perfectly, including deactivating MePad and using his teleportation ability as a method of easy transportation.

Competition: Taco has no discernible competition. The only other villainous characters present in Inanimate Insanity are MePhone4, MePhone4S, MePhone5, and Steve Cobs. MePhone is ultimately a Depraved Kids' Show Host who ultimately ends up being portrayed as a Jerkass Woobie, 4S undergoes a Heel–Face Turn and performs a Heroic Sacrifice, 5 is little more than a Generic Doomsday Villain, and Cobs is an antisocial person who, if given enough time and development, could potentially cross the line of becoming a Complete Monster. None of them are as quick-thinking and charismatic as Taco is.

Now I'm gonna do my first one shot character from Metalocalypse.

From season 1 episode, Bluesklok, Dethklok goes on stage and are unable to perform and cancel all their shows. An elderly black man watching through a TV says the band is going through a phase every musician endures. Dethklok has the blues.

Who is Mashed Potato Johnson?

A parody of Blues musician Robert Johnson who was often said to have sold his soul to the devil for his fame, Mashed Potato Johnson did so in a more literal sense. As the band mopes back at Mordhaus, Johnson somehow manages to bypass all their security to see them and offer up his services to teach them Blues music. He takes them to the middle of nowhere and shows them various places men suffered to create the Blues, including a tree where 22 men were murdered just for being ugly. Johnson forces them to endure heavy labor under the hot son without sunscreen to get them into the Blues spirit physically, and has the band begin really roasting each other to get them there mentally. He further teaches the incredibly fast guitarists Skwisgaar and Toki to slow down and play acoustic guitar by tying down their wrists with cinder blocks.

This culminates in the band being able to play Blues music sufficiently, but there is one final step they must take to become true masters. They must sell their souls to the Blues Devil. In a case of Early-Installment Weirdness, the band proves hilariously capable at negotiating contracts and is able to get the Devil down to accepting a $5 Hot Topics gift card while getting 7% of the Devil's soul for themselves. Believing the band are truly ready, Johnson sets up a concert for them to give the Blues to those who truly deserve it. Thus, he sets it up at a hippie music festival. We see that Dethklok is truly back to their old selves when their music invokes the infamous Curse and summons down tornadoes that kill dozens of member of the audience, all the while Johnson is satisfied with a job well done.

He has another appearance in a later comic, but I haven't read that so I won't go into detail here. The synopsis is that he hires Dethklok to play on top of a speeding train while he beats up the soul of a dead serial killer and offers it up to the Blues Devils in exchange for his own soul back.

Is he magnificent?

Mashed Potato Johnson is a cross between a Cool Old Guy and Old Master that is calm and collected enough to teach the whiny bandmates. While not a grand schemer, he is a skilled enough Trickster Mentor to push the band through harsh lessons and accomplish his goals.

Is he a bastard?

Even is one doesn't consider his harsh training methods cruel enough, he is still more than enough of a bastard when he gets the band to sign away their souls and later destroy a hippie festival to teach them the Blues.

Final Verdict?

A fairly simple [tup] I think here and he'll be one of the less contentious one shot characters I plan on burning through.

First time voting here but [tup] to Johnson.

Hello, I was just looking at the thread and I wanted to say that I'm familiar with the show from RWBYraikou888's EP. So if there's any questions regarding the candidate, I can maybe pitch in.

Also, just wanted to ask for future reference: apart from Eto Yoshimura, have there been any other candidates from Tokyo Ghoul that have been proposed? I have a particular candidate in mind which I haven't seen been proposed after looking it up, but just wanted to check if any others have been turned down.

I’m gonna put some Gloom in your eye.
