While I personally strongly dislike Teen Titans Go, about 65% of my disdain stems from the fact that it clogs up the schedule and doesn't give other cartoons much time in the spotlight. If it aired much less frequently I would still dislike it but I wouldn't really care about it as much. I've accepted the fact that the original might not come back and if I want a season 6 I'll have to start looking for the 10% of fanfics that are actually good (insert DKM joke here).

It clogging the schedule is the fault of whoever is in charge of the schedule. Some dude named Vishnu.

Bump

New Midnight Society video on some unmade or little known celebrity cartoons, including the planned Johnny Bravo live action movie, some cartoon project by Gerard Way before his band My Chemical Romance hit it big, and the never made Arnold Schwarzenegger cartoon The Governator.

[up]Most of these are already pretty well known (to animation fan's, anyway), but I guess that's not really a criticism. Coulda' sworn that he'd already talked about the Governator, though.

Pan's been feeling down lately due to some recent bad news, so he made a little something.

Side-effects may include the urge to cry out of a sense of inspiration and a tingled spine.

Pan tackles the Danny Phantom series finale Phantom Planet. In short, he said it could've worked in theory but that it was muddled by everyone being an ass to Danny and some pretty stupid ideas that made no sense and were just kinda flat out bullshit.

Also, next week's podcast will have none other than Night Mind and Blame It On Jorge, the latter being a You Tuber Pan has collaborated with before and the former being a particularly popular Youtuber who analyzes horror RPG's and stuff. Cool guy with some great content, I wholeheartedly recommend checking him out.

Giving this a bump because holy shit, Pan uploaded a review early...in secret, it seems:

This video is unlisted right now, and apparently the link was first posted on 4chan of all places (/co to be precise), by...apparently Pan. So the comments are a bunch of people from 4chan who are pissed at Pan for being attention seeking or something.

Edit: Welp, looks like it got taken down.

Looking at the comments of the reupload, apparently this is supposed to be a Patreon-exclusive video.

Which'd explain how it wound up on 4chan, Patreon and leaks are like flypaper and flies.

[down]Indeed, he did upload it! It's just unlisted since the video link was only meant to be given to Patreon members.

Sorry this took long, but it's pretty big.

Pan explains some of the weirdest animation errors in a new installment of the Midnight Society:

  • 1) Part of the audience flying into nothing in the Dexter's Laboratory episode "Chubby Cheese's".
    • Explanation: The overseas animation studio in Korea thought the audience was attempting to fly like Superman. When the crew found out, they were confused, but thought it was so funny, they kept it in and added a sound effect.
  • 2) In Teen Titans: Trouble in Tokyo, during a montage with Robin and Starfire, when Starfire is dominating a rip-off of Guitar Hero, a crowd forms around her. One of the crowd members is a copy of Beast Boy, but with white skin.
    • Explanation: Speculations of clones aside, according to character designer Brianne Drouhard, when you animate a crowd shot, you can't ask the guys overseas to just make a crowd, someone has to design and approve each background character being used for a crowd shot. Apparently, a BB model sheet might've gotten mixed into the crowd sheets.
  • 3) Here's a tragic one that wasn't on the final product, but behind-the-scenes: In John Kricfalusi's blog, there was a story by animator Will Finn. When he was working on the 80's show He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, he was hired as a clean-up animator (whose job is to take the storyboards and make them more cohesive for the overseas animators. One of the guys they had to draw was Ram Man. The problem was that Ram Man's backside was drawn with the thumbs flipped on the wrong side of his hands. It would've been easy enough to just draw them the right way, but when the clean-up supervisor saw the problem, he told the crew that they had to follow the model sheets regardless until they could make and approve new ones. So they did that, and a few weeks later, when the corrected model sheets came in, they had to redo everything involving the sheets.Yikes.
  • 4) The Super Mario Bros. Super Show is one of those shows that's just crawling with errors. For this list, he focuses on two hiccups: first in the Christmas episode, Pan focuses on how if you freeze-frame one particular scene, you see the animated show equivalent of a movie clipboard for Pacific Rim Animation, an overseas animation studio in China. This error only appears in the DVDs from Shout! Factory. The second is in the "Indiana Jones" parody episode. Pan tries to figure out the deal with Indiana Joe and his lack of a face by contacting the story writer. However, there has been no response, so Pan resorts to theorizing the lack of face is in a jokey reference to how the Ark of the Covenant melts people's faces off.
  • 5) In The Transformers episode, "Child's Play" (the one where the Autobots and Decepticons end up stuck on a planet of giant organic aliens), the Autobots are leaving the planet of giant aliens via modified toy rocket, but it gets messy to say the least.
    • Explanation: Cell layering error.
  • 6) The Simpsons: Smithers changing from black to white (yellow) and Bart's blue shirt.
    • Explanation: Black Smithers: Apparently, it was because it seemed like a bad idea to have a black subservient character. However, Simpsons writer Jay Kogen said in a Reddit AMA that Smithers was intended to be gay and black (and purple?), but thought it was too much, so they stuck with him being gay, but white. On the other hand, Matt Groening by way of TMZ stated that it was a mistake and Smithers was always meant to be white. Blue Shirt Bart: One popular fan theory is that the blue shirt error was on purpose so if anyone found a red shirted Bart, FOX's lawyers would know it's a bootleg. The real reason is that merchandise was made before the first episode of The Simpsons before the designs were finalized. In other words: Fox wanted Simpsons merchandise ASAP.

[up] I was just about to post about this with the spoiler-blocks and everything, but you beat me to it.

Sigh, 2017 was kind of more awful than 2016...which is why I'm more than happy Pan took the time to talk about the good things about 2017 in terms of cartoons. (I'm especially glad he mentioned Castlevania.)

He really can't let The Powerpuff Girls (2016) go, can he? Of all the things to make the list (even if it was only #10), he chose a sub-par made-for-tv-movie? Guy needs to let it go already.

Still, yeesh, I wasn't even aware of numbers 2 and 4. This was a pretty harrowing year, wasn't it? It's kind of telling when a lot of the "good" things he mentions are about music and video games as opposed to movies/TV, while a bunch of others are only the announcements for potentially good things to come.

Here's to hoping next year will be better.[tup]

KADOKAWA firing the director of Kemono Friends for doing this unofficial episode 12.1 that he released online.

The entire staff resigned in protest, Kadokawa got the V As of the characters in the show to apologize for them to alleviate outrage which only made it worse.

You can find all the information on this in Kemono Friends' own TV Tropes page.

Have an early video just in time for Christmas Eve! Essentially, these are 4 mini-reviews crammed into one video! In any case, these are...

Top 4 BEST or WORST Christmas Specials (in no particular order):

  • 1. A Merry Mirthworm Christmas: It's pretty plain, but it generates a warm feeling.
  • 2. A Boo Crew Christmas: Think Charlie Brown with attitude. It gets surprisingly weird...and a little too real.
  • 3. Olive, the Other Reindeer: Despite being a touch cynical (probably because of its shared DNA with The Simpsons and Futurama), it's still a classic on Pan's book. Pan takes some time to talk about the animation and how the characters were animated in CG while sticking with the appearance of the source material.
  • 4. The Christmas Light: A case of reverse lost media, made in 1995, possibly to cash in on the then-new Toy Story. Might have been made with Danny DeVito's assistance? It...gets weird. Very weird.
