Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Re Not So Stoic: Don't think so. You won't stop being stoic for helping people.

Re Pay Evil unto Evil: Personally think only if Trevor or the narrative argues that his actions are not okay, but should be fine since he's killing terrorists.

Hello, Amonimus. The point is, is his retribution commensurate with the actions of the criminal misanthrope and the emperor?

I mean it needs something from a work to explain if "Pay Evil" is there, because killing the villains Emperor Evulz and The Generalissimo Marcus in this scenario would be pretty normal and appropriate thing to do.

From Guess Who's Coming to Dinner:

  • Fair for Its Day: The movie makes sure that John is perfect in every way, from being a brilliant doctor to a loving fiancé to hammer in that there's nothing wrong with interracial marriage, which was a positive portrayal considering the time period it was released in. Nowadays, with the trope being everywhere, especially by writers writing characters outside their race, this would be seen as lazy writing and even racist because it implies that minorities has to be unrealistically perfect to have a relationship with white people.

For the most part this might be fine but I am wondering what the bolded part has to with a trope about something being progressive for the time but aging poorly in retrospect. Anymore opinions? Is it just me?

Found this in Main.Faux Action Girl. Does it qualify?

  • An in-universe example from Berserk: Farnese leads the Holy Iron Chain Knights, but they never expect her to actually fight. The Knights are traditionally led by a maiden, so she is entirely there for looks and because she comes from a noble family. Not that the men she commands are any better (the order only exists to give young scions of important noble families prestigious but cushy knightly duties), with the notable exceptions of Serpico and Azan. In-story Farnese is not very happy with this and later she begins to toughen herself up.

At Trivia.Markiplier

  • Hostile Show Takeover: On January 12, 2016, Markiplier's channel was hijacked as a result of the XSplit password leak that had previously led to Vinesauce Joel's channel being taken over in November of 2015. Unlike with Joel's case, Mark's hijacker did not address his viewers, only displaying their logo and Twitter handle with music playing in the background. Furthermore, while Joel's hijacking occurred on a Saturday and thus dragged on for almost a week due to Google's employees not working on weekends, Mark's takeover occurred on a Tuesday, meaning that Google was able to respond almost immediately and purged the hijacker from Mark's channel in only five hours.

It feels inappropriate to use a non-Trivia trope to describe real world loss of an account.

I'm not sure what other cleanup is best for this kind of question, but recently Xenoblade Chronicles had this example added:

  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: Zig-zagged. While the games fall into the opposite trope compared to Nintendo's mostly family-friendly library, they are ultimately aimed at the Shōnen Demographic and the creators have often cited teenagers around the same age range of the protagonists as an intended demographic. Given that the games are darker than Nintendo's usual fare but not restricted to a seinen audience, they feature numerous dark/depressing and heavy themes, graphic violence and swearing, but also have an ultimately optimistic tone (even the seemingly bleak Xenoblade Chronicles 3) and are (mostly) free of blood and gore.

I don't this is an audience reaction that really exists in any meaningful way? I've almost never seen anyone make that assumption. They're not that much darker than a lot of other T-rated fare from Nintendo (games like Twilight Princess are known for also being pretty dark without being an example of this). Anyone I know who's heard of these games is aware that they have a lot of violent combat and dark themes, and the Japanese Shōnen Demographic has always encompassed teenagers, young adult protagonists, and some surprisingly dark themes. This isn't comparable to, say, Chainsaw Man.

I also removed similar entries from the same troper on the YMMV pages for the first and second games due to redundancy with the above as well as what felt like misuse since again, despite 2 having a cartoony style I've never once heard of it being confused as a game for young children, in part because its reputation as a supposed porn game precedes it too heavily.

So Ptero Soarer is weird... the description and laconic both talk about a specific depiction of pterosaurs as bat-winged real-life-wyverns who swoop down and kidnap people, but a lot of examples are nitpicking about mildly inaccurate depictions, and the "common inaccuracies" folder reads like a useful notes page. Do you think a lot of the examples could be cut?

That's what happens when you have a "this prehistoric creature is depicted wrong" trope on a site with a bunch of paleo nerds. See every ATT discussion on Walking with Dinosaurs for more of this stuff.

I wouldn't mind a cleanup, but this isn't really the thread to discuss these issues, and if the trope is suffering from this issue on a wide scale then it might be time for TRS.

Would Ash's Torterra's Rock Climb from Pokémon: The Series count as a Death or Glory Attack? Visually, it's nothing spectacular: Torterra stands on his hind legs as his claws glow and then he slams his front legs into the ground causing a giant pillar of rock to appear under the opponent. Torterra then charges up a side of the pillar and slams into the opponent. However, aside from battles with Team Rocket, opponents always have a way to counter Torterra's Rock Climb: namely, Volkner's Electivire's Ice Punch which instantly knocked out Torterra, Bertha's Hippodown's Iron Head and Paul's Drapion's Poison Fang. Asking because Rock Climb is listed as a Death or Glory Attack on Torterra's character folder on Pokemon The Series Diamond And Pearl Ashs Pokemon.

Hrmm is Larry Butz from the Ace Attorney franchise an example of an Eccentric Artist? He's shown repeatedly in the series to be highly accomplished in artistic endeavors, and to say he's eccentric is putting it lightly. There doesn't seem to be an artist trope for a ditzy artist and when I asked earlier a ditzy artist seems to be an Eccentric Artist.

Just as a general thing, can you use Doomed by Canon in cases where the work is based on a true story? Thinking specifically of Jesse Brown in Devotion (2022).

[up] It's a subtrope of Foregone Conclusion, and that does allow works based on true stories. I might be tempted to use that rather than Doomed by Canon, though, as Real Life isn't 'canon'?

I felt like adding Feather Fingers to the page for The Bluffers. I just want to know if this would be a good example:

Feather Fingers: Zocrates, Regal Eagle, and Gin-Seng (who are all bird characters) are perfectly capable of using their wings to make hand gestures and manipulate objects.

Do they use their individual feathers like people use their fingers? It sounds like it, but I'd make that clear in the example.

I'd happily mention Follow the Bio-Brick Road in that case and include it like so, because according to the Zero-Context Example page, something as simple as mentioning one episode in which this trope comes into play can qualify:

In Follow the Bio-Brick Road, Gin-Seng can be seen picking up the Redberries and subsequently putting them back in the basket.

(Edit: My deed has been done; they do use their individual wings like fingers.)

Found this in Casual Crucifixion.

  • Averted, surprisingly, in Conan the Barbarian (1982) (because if you'd expect this trope to apply to anyone, it'd be Conan). His crucifixion is of both the binding and nails-in-wrists variety, and he's implied to survive far longer than anyone else could in his position, but he still very nearly dies after being rescued. It's implied Valeria has to trade her life for his in order for Conan to survive and recover.
Is this an Averted Trope (so cut) or a Subverted Trope?

Casual Crucifixion is for when people recover quite quickly from being nailed to a piece of wood and left up for days. The example says nothing about the recovery time, just that he nearly died. To avert the trope, it would mean he's crippled for life. To subvert it, the work would set up how he can easily shrug it off, then not shrug it off.

As written, it lacks context.

So, I've seen this under Story Branch Favoritism: While each route has a reason to play it, the Azure Moon route looks to have gotten somewhat more love and attention from the developers. Gameplay-wise, it has the most exclusive characters, the most paralogues, and the most exclusive weapons; moreover, it's the only route where all of the Heroes' Relics can be obtained, plus it's the only route to include a support conversation that gives a usable weapon. Narratively, a significant amount of conflict in the first part of the game spins out of the Kingdom (rather than the Empire or Alliance) and has personal connections with Blue Lion students - Sylvain's brother leads a gang which introduces the player to Demonic Beasts, Ashe's adoptive father launches a rebellion, and Mercedes and Dimitri turn out to have complicated personal connections to the Death Knight and the Flame Emperor respectively. The Blue Lions also get an exclusive dialogue scene between Byleth and Dimitri at the ball, an extended version of the scene where the Flame Emperor meets with Thales and Monica, and flashbacks using character models and voice actors found nowhere else in the game. All the Blue Lions get exclusive, bespoke endings in their route, while all the other routes share a common pool of endings (with some minor rewrites for a few characters if the player sides with the Empire). It's also the only route that guarantees Rhea's survival with less than a full Support, due to her being The Ghost of Azure Moon.

I would like to point out that though this is true, siding with the Yellow Deer lets you face off against the True Final Boss (Nemesis).

From Neologism, are these not the Sub-Trope of Portmanteau? Cornuthaum as Corn (horn) + Thaum (magic)? Septerra being a Latin portmanteau as well?

  • Shakespeare's Eyeballs?
  • The Deadly Rooms of Death series extends "once, twice, thrice" as follows: quarce, quince, sence, septence, octence, novence. All of these combine Latin numeric prefixes with the "-ce" ending of the first three. They have begun to show up in other places outside the series.
  • Net Hack uses the word "cornuthaum" for a wizard's pointed hat. The hat existed in media before, but the word was specifically made up for use in Net Hack.
  • Septerra Core. The title contains "Septerra" which is the name of the planet the game takes place on. However, "Septerra", while a made-up word, can be taken to mean "Seven Lands", which is Fridge Brilliance because the game contains exactly that.
