Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.
This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.
Common problems include:
- Conversation on the Main Page
- Flame Bait
- Squicky content
- Impossible in Real Life
Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.
If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.
If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.
Before adding to the crowner:
- The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
- There must be support from others in thread.
- Any objections should be addressed.
- Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.
When adding to the crowner:
- Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
- Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
- An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).
In order for a crowner to pass:
- Must have been up for a minimum of a week
- There must be a 2:1 ratio
- If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
- Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
- Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page
Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need crowner vote.
Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.
After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.
NRLEP tag:

LRLEO tag:
%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]

Notes:
- This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
- Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
- As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
- The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

FurryConfusion.Real Life exists, and the examples are not good. I think it should be listed as “Impossible in real life.” We have comparisons between humans and monkeys (not supposed to be the same species), humans and neanderthals (neither is a non-intelligent species), animals taking care of different animals (not supposed to be the same species) and advertisements (why are those on the real-life page anyway?).
SoundCloudAdd to the crowner.
Rock'n'roll never dies!Time to call some more :
Monster Fangirl (5-6) - Keep
Polar Opposite Twins (4-7) - Keep
There are others that are technically OK to call at this point, but I personally feel that the 48 hour standard is to short and won't make the call until 5 or 6 days have passed.
Here’s Fallen States of America‘s Real Life section:
- The American Civil War: The costliest war the US has fought - in relative monetary terms and in both relative and absolute numbers of casualties - in addition to actually being on US soil (the USA has waged most of its wars overseas). The US is noteworthy for having very little bad blood around despite its frequent - low-cost - wars, but the Civil and Revolutionary wars are notable exceptions to this rule as they left the country (somewhat) impoverished and exhausted. The Civil War remains a sore topic in the 'South' to this day. Sure, the country suffered during the war and was divided, but it didn’t collapse.
- Frequently a Discussed Trope in US election campaign ads, or by anyone dissatisfied with the state of the country. This has been done ever since Lyndon Johnson’s infamous “Daisy” ad, but they may be right eventually. Just speculation about this trope.
- The typical Western European/Canadian perception of the US is this. ZCE that violates Examples Are Not General and is just about non-US perspectives on the country.
Should this be put on the crowner for being an event that hasn’t actually happened in Real Life?

back lolPut it on the crowner for being a major ROCEJ violation to call the United States this.
Rock'n'roll never dies!Looks like Dark and Troubled Past is ready to call. I've updated the crowner and sent the RL subpage to the cutlist.
I listed it in NoRealLife.Gossip And Stereotypes. We can discuss a better category if needed.

Added Fallen States of America to the crowner. I think the last trope that should be added before the crowner is swapped out should be Mile-High Club, which is a sex trope that I've brought up repeatedly without the go-ahead.
Edited by LaundryPizza03 on Oct 25th 2020 at 2:39:29 PM
I'm back! There's only two actual real-life examples listed under Mile-High Club anyway, one being presumably the Ur-Example. The rest are just general entries and jokes.
I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.Added.
I'm back!Just found that Vapor Wear has a Real Life folder... Yeesh. Add it to the crowner.
Rock'n'roll never dies!I'd normally stop adding tropes here, but it's a good suggestion. Vapor Wear looks too NSFW to allow RL examples. It's also rather gossipy, like what you'd normally find with NSFW tropes. Adding.
I'm back!I found that Convection Shmonvection had a RL section cut in 2017. Should it be NRLEP'd (as impossible) to prevent re-addition?
I'm back! The trope definition is a little unclear on whether it's more about the lack of heat transport or more about the lack of realism. I think not.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanIt's primarily about the lack of realism, and since Real Life cannot "lack realism" by definition...
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Since it hasn't been added back, there is no problem to necessitate a listing.
I believe this example should be cut from Maury since Attention Whore is NRLEP, and it isn't something that happened/was discussed on-camera. FYI, the first sentence used to be "All the guests, if you think about it."
- Attention Whore: Many of the guests. Why else would they go on national television to share their problems?
Time to call some more.
Breast Expansion (20-3) - NRLEP
Furry Confusion (12-2) - NRLEP
Artistic License – Geography (9-8) - KEEP
Vodka Drunkenski (6-6) - KEEP
Sucky School (7-8) - KEEP
Still Pending

Put a request in the Locked Pages thread to PRLC FurryConfusion.Real Life.
Rock'n'roll never dies! There's something off about the RL examples for Poke the Poodle.
- Anybody who pretends to be evil by tearing off the tag on their mattress, even though the only way that could be considered illegal is if the retailer were to remove it.
- American gangs smuggle in weapons and drugs. The Black Cobra gang in Sweden... steals cakes. And That's Terrible.
- A member of the Japanese Yakuza was arrested in Tokyo for trying to scalp tickets to a Hello Kitty theme park.
- Many forum trolls use juvenile insults, Insane Troll Logic, and other Logical Fallacies to annoy people, as opposed to more severe threats that can result in real life consequences. As do school bullies, who use teasing rather than physical attacks to upset people. This can turn fairly serious, however, and in the latter case, the abuser will often graduate to more openly vicious and cruel attacks should they find mere psychological bullying boring for them.
- While North Korea has no shortage of actual atrocities, one can't help but laugh a little bit when they hack the South Korean website to spam pro-North Korea and anti-western propaganda.

Thomas fans needed! Come join me in the the show's cleanup thread!Yeah, Poke the Poodle is a morality trope. Add it to the next crowner as soon as we clear out this one. I think the remaining 3 crowner entries can be called in favor of NRLEP. Should Fallen States of America be filed under Impossible or Too Controversial?
I'm back!I have to wonder why nobody's bothered to put real life examples of Dirty Coward. It seems ripe for putting people there plus there's a whole bunch of examples in fiction.
Eh, it'd be more of Morality trope imo.

Thomas fans needed! Come join me in the the show's cleanup thread!Too Controversial. It hasn't happened yet, but it could.

Feels good, don't it?What do you guys think of An Arm and a Leg? The description says that it's the dismemberment of limbs as a dramatic device, but the RL folder just lists people who lost their limbs.
Would this be a Narrative trope?
Thomas fans needed! Come join me in the the show's cleanup thread!
Crown Description:
Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:- Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
- Must have been up for a minimum of a week
- If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.
Science Marches On seems more fitting.
