Real Life section maintenance (New Crowner 19 Feb 2024)

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

NRLEP tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/NoRealLifeExamplesPlease via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]

LRLEO tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/LimitedRealLifeExamplesOnly via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]
%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

Ruined FOREVER is probably a misplaced entry from the complaining folder.

Question, isn't Transgender a sex/sexuality trope? Should it go in that folder for the NRLEP page instead? Or maybe it could go into the Gossip/Stereotypes folder?

What folder would be the best for that then? It's now in Complaining, Flame Bait, and Natter.

For that matter, what about Serious Business when it goes NRLEP? Which folder would that go into, since there's multiple reasons for RL examples banned.

I'd say Transgender goes in "Gossip and Stereotypes" and Serious Business goes in "Too Common".

[up]I can't see why Ironic Echo would need to be NRLEP. There's not much mudslinging and when it does happen it's about recent events, so No Recent Examples, Please! would be a better fit if we need to do anything.

The reason I brought up Amazonian Beauty is because someone removed an image of a real person from the image links page, claiming it was NRLEP when it isn't.

Should Basement-Dweller be NRELP? It seems too common in Real Life, and many of the examples in the Real Life folder violate Examples Are Not General.

Bringing this over from ATT for discussion.

The real life folder for Fake Charity is just a long series of bullets about identifying possible fake charities in real life. It has no actual examples, instead listing in general how it could occur and avoiding it. So far, it seems clear the folder should removed for Examples Are Not General and being beyond the site's scope, but should the page become NRLEP? Or just remove the current folder and leave the page open to actual RL examples?

    The RL folder
  • Ways you can spot a fake (or potentially fake) charity:
    • It is not registered with your local/state/provincial/federal government.
    • Charity watchdog sites either do not list it, or have listed it as suspicious.
    • A representative who is collecting for the charity either cannot or will not answer any questions you have.
    • They ask for donations using wire transfers, cash, money orders, prepaid cards and the like.
    • They don't provide either a mailing address or a physical address, or they do, but it's fake.
    • They don't provide a phone number, or they do, but it's fake, or no one ever answers.
    • You're made to feel guilty, or like you're selfish/a bad person/etc. if you don't want to donate, or don't want to donate now.
    • A collector either cannot or will not supply identification, or their identification is bogus.
    • They keep hounding you for donations, even after you've told them to stop calling or sending you mail.
    • Their website looks almost exactly like that of a legitimate website, but the details concerning where to donate and whom to donate to are different.
    • It purports to help a local fire or police department or hospital, but the actual fire department/police department/hospital has no knowledge of this charity or fundraiser.
    • They solicit donations from you via email campaigns. Generally speaking, real charities don't solicit donations through email. (This could be a variation of the classic 419 Scam.)
    • They ask for donations via store or online gift cards or online currencies such as iTunes. Once again real charities don't solicit donations in this way.
    • They ask for wiring of money through a wiring service like Western Union. Once again this is also not typically a way that a real charity would solicit money.
    • You get an email asking for financial help for a sick child (or occasionally adult), often sent as a Chain Letter, and (more importantly) with no information (such as an address, whether the child in question is being tended to at a hospital or at home, a diagnosis, a prognosis, perhaps the name of a doctor or hospital, etc.), but what is included is information on where to donate money to, usually via wire transfer.
    • They don't accept material donations like food, razor blades, or clothing even when they say they intend to use the money on such items. note
    • Of course, what can muddy the waters here is that even legitimate charities have been officially censured for the "hard sell" tactics used by paid agents; one of the most respectable names in the business, Oxfam, and several other big names, were publicly exposed by the UK's Charity Commission (the overseeing body) for their use of "chuggers" note  and for their use of third-party call centres and agents who were paid by commission and were not too scrupulous over making sales. The results were horrendous. the chuggers used both the inculcating-guilt scam and the persistent nuisance calling of people who had already told them not to.
  • Various "watchdog" sites such as Charity Navigator, CharityWatch, and BBB Wise Giving Alliance rate real-life nonprofits on their transparency, accountability, and efficient use of funds.
  • One common complaint about crowdfunding websites such as GoFundMe is that it's very easy for any scammer to post a sob story and receive donations. The sites do have fraud reporting tools, but they also can be lax about following up on how people use the donations they receive.
  • Be wary of charities or fundraisers you've never heard of that pop up all of a sudden in the wake of a natural disaster or some other type of humanitarian crisis. While some of them are legitimate, at least an equal number of them are the result of Con Artists looking to take advantage of the chaos, and take advantage of the generosity of people who want to help. And you might not be able to tell which is which until it's too late. If you want to make donations towards disaster relief organizations, your best bet is to find a reputable charity through one of the aforementioned "watchdog" sites.

[up] I think some of that can be heavily condensed into a Truth in Television paragraph on the description, like the links to Charity Navigator. I imagine it might be a potential flamebait trope too since it could start fights over whether a certain charity is "legit enough."

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

For now, delete the folder and condense the general examples into Truth in Television. I think it doesn't need to ban real life examples unless any flamebait examples are added.

Calling to ban real life examples (and in which folder they should go):

Cool Car: Too Common in Real Life to Trope

The Soulless: Morality Tropes

Byronic Hero: Morality Tropes

Serious Business: Too Common in Real Life to Trope

Calling to keep real life examples:

Ironic Echo

Please make sure to dewick CoolCar.Real Life and SeriousBusiness.Real Life before putting them on the cutlist.

Was Creator's Pet ever considered here? There isn't currently a section but it's not listed as NRLEP. I am undecided whether it should be listed.

Creator's Pet is a fundamentally real-world phenomenon already. It's not In-Universe that the creators like a particular character. Since real life doesn't have authors or characters, it is illogical to apply the trope to real people, so I wouldn't worry about it.

I removed this real life general example from the "Video Games" folder in Crack is Cheaper.

  • The main source of fan outrage from microtransactions in games. Sure, spending extra money on a game you shelled sixty bucks on to purchase new content that took the developers extra time to complete makes sense. Spending money to buy something you could (and probably should) earn with a few hours of play, or even gamble away your money with loot boxes (which may cause gambling addictions to develop when played by children)? You could spend thousands of dollars just to stay 'ahead' of the players who earned their fun through hundreds of hours of dedication, which also breaks the feeling of accomplishment and cheapens the game. And when the game eventually shuts down servers or is no longer fun, all those in-game items you spent your money on are worthless.

I thought that maybe some of this is salvagable. Maybe make an Analysis page for the trope? (I have no experience with Analysis pages, so I need help, please)

Crown Description:

Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:
  • Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.

After you bring up a trope for discussion, please try to wait at least a day or so for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

If an item has a (CLOSED) note, there is no need to vote on it: the result has already been decided and it's no longer up for discussion.
