....I see and am trying to parse the wall of text in that post, but between time, stress, and fatigue, it's not working out too well.

Can you TL,DR 1) what is the story you want to tell, and 2) why is it necessary/desirable that Shinji and seemingly every living/embodied named NERV-related female in the story short of Maria Vincennes should... it's not technically accurate for what you're describing, but goddammit I'll call it a Hive Mind anyway.

For the record, the story premise in the linked post (where it's just Shinji and Asuka as little kids psychically bonding over their respective Contact Experiment Trauma) sounds a lot more like something I'd read.

For the record, the story premise in the linked post (where it's just Shinji and Asuka as little kids psychically bonding over their respective Contact Experiment Trauma) sounds a lot more like something I'd read.
The "extended" version is basically that but either swapping one of the two with another character, or adding more characters into the bond. Think about it; imagine if all those characters were working together right under Gendo's nose to undermine his precious scenario.

Also, you'd notice one or more of the following commonalities among the characters that I've named:

  • The character either canonically had suffered some sort of deep psychological trauma (Misato), or is a prime candidate for adding such a trauma to their backstory (Mari, Mana, Mayumi).
  • The character has would be 100% opposed to Gendo's secret agenda should they learn of it (practically everyone but Ritsuko and Rei).
  • The character is part of Gendo's inner circle but only supports Gendo out of "devotion" to his person rather than his plan that has canonically been proven to be breakable (Ritsuko and Rei).
  • The character is part of Seele's inner circle but has proven to be a Wild Card (Kaworu).
  • The character, despite not being part of Gendo's or Seele's respective inner circles, could theoretically serve as an "in" for the protagonists to screw up either one's plans (Maya is Ritsuko's right hand and the second person you would go to for an expert on the Magi; theoretically, Maya could "hack" into the Magi, and there's a non-zero chance that the Magi AIs would achieve consensus on letting Maya have her waynote ).

Yeah, the way you're describing that doesn't appeal to me.

And even if they stop Gendo (which in a lot of ways, boils down to either just killing him or Shinji and/or Rei being unwilling/unable to play along with him), that still leaves SEELE in the background to follow through on their scenario — and without Gendo to potentially interfere with them.

See, that's what Kaworu is there for. And Rei, if she can go full God Mode by absorbing Adam's body from Gendo's hand and merging with Lilith without losing control.

PS: I'm under the weather today quite a bit, so this might be contributing to any non-satsifactoriness in my recent replies.

Eh. I'm more interested in how you can play it for character interaction than anything about trying to affect the actual canonical plot.

I feel like this chapter should by all rights stand more-or-less complete as-is, but at the same time it kind of feels too short.

I've got some bits in mind for Rei to have a close encounter of the Ghost Rider kind to showcase her reaction to it, but I don't know if thematically it goes well with this or should be a separate chapter.

Blearily rising from the sink she'd just vomited into, Yui Ikari glowered at her hung-over reflection in the mirror. Despite it having been over ten years since she was given this physical body...

"I still look exactly like I did when I was in my early twenties," she muttered. If anyone saw me with Shinji right now, they'd probably assume that we were siblings or cousins instead of mother and child.

"That's right," the image in the reflection replied. "It's a magical prosthesis created by Mephisto to be immutable and indestructible. It's not actually a human body, so it can't age."

"But it can still get drunk," Yui groused, "and worse - it can still get hangovers."

The image in the reflection smiled cheekily, which looked unnatural since the hung-over glaze across her eyes remained unchanged. "That's the cost of indulging in vice, I suppose."

The image then leaned closer, licking her lips as it seemed like she could almost pop out of the mirror. "It dulls the mind even as it heightens the senses."

Slowly, sensually unbuttoning her blouse as she continued to lean toward the mirror, her voice took on a sultry, almost otherworldly quality. "Your ability to think rationally degrades, creating lapses in judgment. There's no telling what kind of mischief-"

Without even so much as an annoyed roll of her eyes, Yui pulled a gun from the cabinet and pointed at her reflection's face. "Get out of my bathroom," she growled, "or I'll have to spend the rest of the day scrubbing your soul off of the walls."

The reflection flinched back in shock, before Yui's image shimmered and disappeared, revealing a buxom brunette with hair down to her neck, the kind of hips that men have killed for, and a pair of black leathery wings were emerging from her back. She wore only the flimsiest of lingerie and a corset. "Now let's be reasonable," the succubus said with hands raised in a defensive, placating gesture. "Okay, sure, I'm a demon. I'm horny, and I don't see a problem with using trickery, misdirection, or other underhanded means to get satisfaction. But, girl, let's talk about you for a moment. Do you even know how long it's been since you got laid?"

After a moment, Yui decided to accept the impromptu conversation as an attempt to distract from her hangover, though she never lowered her gun. "In this body? Never. In absolute time? Probably a bit over a decade."

The succubus looked at Yui with pity in her eyes. "Poor thing~," she crooned. "And yet, we're both women here, we can afford to be honest: you've wanted it more than a few times, craved it even. But you've never had the time, or you've always been dedicated to something else, so you've never been able to relieve those urges."

Yui paused for a moment. "All of that is true, but you're still not getting my soul."

All at once, the succubus's expression turned from sympathy to embarrassment as her cheeks flushed, and she stomped a foot in irritation. "Fine then, be that way! I bet your stupid soul's not even all that impressive, no matter how sexy your body is!"

And then she emerged from the mirror and angrily stomped away.

For several seconds, Yui could only stare. "...is that the kind of behavior they're calling tsundere nowadays?"

"Either that, or a stunningly poor attempt at reverse psychology."

Yelping in alarm, Yui immediately turned to attack the second intruder on her personal space. Unfortunately, the lingering effects of the alcohol from last night caused her to throw the gun instead of shooting it.

Fortunately, she realized upon seeing him that the intruder was none other than Mephisto, who since striking the Deal with her son had been an invaluable ally, constantly using his powers and other resources to keep the family hidden from prying eyes - Gendo's and SEELE's in particular. "Those are... quite the reflexes you've developed," he said with a grin.

Slowly, as if in the hope she could keep reality at bay a little longer, Yui leaned against her bathroom counter and pinched the bridge of her nose. "With all due respect? I'm hung-over, half-naked in my bathroom, couldn't get any decent sleep last night, and I'm trying to deal with a mild existential crisis. Can we please just get this over with?"

The demon lord blinked in response, before actually taking a step back and observing Yui's disheveled appearance with neither lust nor judgment. "I... was actually going to give you a pat on the back for all your hard work so far, since Lorenz is the only SEELE member still kicking, and I thought it might be kind of cool for you to spend the next month on vacation. ...but if this is a bad time, I can come back later?"

At that moment, Yui's phone started ringing, and she only stopped herself from cursing when she saw that her son was calling. Holding up a finger to tell Mephisto to wait a moment, she then answered the phone. "Hi honey," Yui said with much more cheer than she had demonstrated in the past several minutes. "How are things in Tokyo-3?"

There was a brief pause as Shinji had to process the question, no doubt distracting him from whatever he'd actually called about, before he begrudgingly supplied Yui with details about any given thing she asked about. "Yes I'm eating properly, no I'm not going without sleep for more than two days at a time, yes I've been keeping up on my homework..."

"You seem frustrated," Yui finally saw fit to 'notice'. "Has something been bothering you?"

"There's a girl in my class," Shinji unsteadily began, while Mephisto triumphantly punched the air. "Ah~, our boy is finally hitting puberty! Are you giving him the talk, or do I get to?"

Rather than disturb the whole building with a gunshot, Yui reached for her blessed handgun and pistol-whipped Mephisto into submission.

"What was that? Is everything okay over there?"

"Hm? Oh, yes, everything's fine," Yui said while keeping an eye on the demon king. "Just some idiot from the floor below being obnoxious. So," she continued, "there's a girl in your class?"

"Yeah, she's... disturbing."

On hearing that string of words, any notion Yui might've had about teasing her son evaporated, and she completely straightened up. This was a boy who had grown up as much demon as man, who in his continuing formative years had seen humanity at its worst and no longer even seemed surprised by the cruelties and evil he witnessed on a nightly basis.

To hear that something, or someone, disturbed him was unsettling in itself. "How so?"

There was an extended silence for several seconds, as Shinji presumably tried to pin down the problem, or else to find the right words for it.

"Her name's Rei Ayanami, and... She has your face, but there's something about her that isn't human..."

Yui considered that for a moment. Even before Second Impact, the odds of a pair of doppelgangers existing in the world were less than one percent, and especially if one factored in the age difference, then it should have been completely impossible unless -

Oh.

Letting out a sigh, Yui slumped against her sink. "I think I know what's going on. Early in Evangelion development, one of the plans for getting pilots for it involved cloning the development team. Nothing was ever done with it during the time I had an active hand in the program, but I do remember volunteering my genes for it before I performed the first Contact Experiment."

"So if she's your clone," Shinji asked, "then... what is she to me?"

Yui paused, and mentally stumbled over the question for several seconds. "What...?"

Oh. He's asking if he should consider Rei as being related to him.

"Well," Yui eventually replied, "she doesn't necessarily have to be anything to you. Even if she has my genes, given that she was more-or-less made in a test tube, I'd hesitate to cite any traditional blood relation between you and her, or even between myself and her. But if you want to think of her as being like a sister or cousin, I wouldn't have a problem with that."

Laughing more as an attempt to defuse some tension than any genuine sense of humor, she added, "I mean, if she looks that much like me then I do think it would be strange if you wanted to date her, but for the same reasons I just went through, it probably wouldn't technically count as incest."

From his position on the floor, a battered and beaten Mephisto valiantly struggled to his knees. "But you know what they say," he whispered with a grin, "that boys usually chase girls that are like their mothers."

"That's not something to joke about!"

Yui blinked at the vehemence in her son's tone and started to apologize, but just as she was about to open her mouth -

"No other woman could ever measure up to you, mom! Never mind replace you!"

In a lot of ways, if not for all the supernatural bullshit in their lives over the last decade, a declaration like that should have set off alarm bells in Yui's head. But between the trips in and out of Hell, the existential angst over her artificial body, and the way her son's endless war against the monsters of Hell and of humanity often seemed like it had twisted Shinji into a monster himself...

I'm glad, she thought instead, that he can still care that much. And it's nice to be appreciated.

"It's sweet of you to say that, Shinji," she said with a more heartfelt smile than had graced her face in a decade, "but the way things are now isn't going to last forever. Even if you're spreading your wings now, someday you'll have to leave the nest for good and build one of your own."

There was an extended silence, and Yui almost pulled the phone away to see if the call had dropped.

"If you say so," Shinji muttered in a tone that suggested he didn't at all agree with what she was saying.

It was fine, Yui decided. I guess he's still a kid after all.

What think ye?

Call it a chapter here, or explore a few more perspectives on current events first?

To actually explain/answer, Rei is almost certainly not joining the Shinji/Yui/Mephisto faction.

What kind of relationship Rei and Shinji would have with each other, well, is probably going to be a lot more neutral than usually happens in canon or fanon.

Remember (or be informed, as the case may be) that the above scene is the aftermath of their first meeting, which didn't took place after Gaghiel.

(Shinji-as-Ghost Rider gave Rei-in-EVA-00 an assist when fighting Ramiel at the end of 1.11, but Rei wasn't cleared to return to school until afterward, and her absence from that place made it a temporary blind spot in NERV's surveillance when they rerouted their resources to higher-priority tasks. before anyone asks: like in the manga version, Asuka beat Gaghiel all by herself.)

Shinji freaked the fuck out over Rei looking exactly like his mother (about whom he's got uncertain but very strong feelings, having literally sold his soul and gone through Hell for a decade for her).

I do have a plan for Rei to have a one-on-one encounter with him when he's in full Spirit of Vengeance mode later, at which point he'll stalk up to Rei and corner her, using his powers to evaluate her.... and ultimately come to one conclusion:

"YOU.... INNOCENT."

Given that I've been trying to build him up as more of a Horrifying Hero true to the old-school comics, however, Rei's reaction to the Spirit of Vengeance won't be as positive.

From what we know of her character in the anime, having had no interaction with other pilots to alter her personality from default, it makes the most sense that sooner than later, she ends up going to Gendo with her fears and her anxieties, and then we see what he's all about....

This reminds me of a scenario I had thought of where Shinji fills the role of Superman, with Mayumi as his Lois Lane, Asuka as his Wonder Woman... and all three are in a Love Triangle that is complicated by several factors.

  1. Shinji loves both women and they both love him.
  2. Only Shinji and Mayumi are aware of the triangle, whereas Asuka only knows that Shinji obviously loves her back but is rather evasive for some unknown reason.
  3. Mayumi herself is a bisexual with a particular type in women: big, strong and sexy women, traits that are embodied perfectly in Asuka.
  4. Asuka is well-known for being proud and possessive, which make Shinji and Mayumi doubtful that she'd be receptive to the idea of "sharing" a love interest.
  5. Shinji and Mayumi have more or less resigned themselves to the hopelessness of consummating their love due to the Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex problem.

That being said, my imagined scenario would culminate in Asuka somehow catching wind of what's going on... and surprising the two by berating them for not telling her sooner, because 1) the Amazons don't limit themselves to monogamous relationships, and 2) the two didn't ask how the already well-known mortal-Amazon relationships dealt with said problem (answer: magical rituals that invoke the blessing of the love deities of the Amazonian pantheon).

—-

On a different note, I'm looking for ways to make the following scenario plausible:

Setting: mundane Japan.

Backstory: Asuka had once developed a crush on a boy during high school because he superficially came across as a younger version of Kaji, whose recent proposal to Misato crushed her heart. However, teenage recklessless culminates in Asuka having an unintended pregnancy near graduation.

Present: Fast-forward about 10 years later. Asuka is a mother of twins (a son and a daughter), stuck in a loveless marriage to her children's father that only happened because she refused to let the kids grow up without a father due to her own troubled childhood with an emotionally abusive father and a Married to the Job (but ultimately well-meaning) mother that died while Asuka was a toddler, and strongarmed her boyfriend into marrying her after high school, arrogantly believing she could whip up said father into shape.

Unfortunately, she failed miserably in that regard:

  1. She was forced to drop her plans for eventual university studies in order to raise her children and maintaining the rather problem-ridden house that her husband chose as their home, becoming a housewife who occasionally does part-time dead-end jobs in the process.
  2. Her husband turns out to have been a misogynistic Control Freak all along, who arrogantly thought he could "rehabilitate" Asuka from being a tomby into a "proper" submissive Trophy Wife. The most he manages is making sure her wardrobe is devoid of anything remotely "tomboyish" or even sexually provocative (he feels his masculine superiority threatened by anything that could be construed as female-empowering, including sexual titilation), and preventing her from joining any of the local gyms (easy when she has her hands full with looking after her kids).
  3. Both she and her children suffer frequent physical abuse from her husband. Mind you, she does fight back, but her legitimate fear of him taking it out on her kids when she isn't looking limits how severe she kicks his ass.
  4. Compounding all of this is the fact that Social Services Does Not Exist is kind of a Truth in Television when it comes to Japan... and her dastardly father, hell-bent on seeing her suffer for defying his own Control Freak-ness, will almost certainly abuse every connection he has to take custody of her children should she decide to risk a divorce.
  5. Side note: Asuka and her husband hate each other's guts so much that they haven't had sex with each other even once in all of their years of marriage.

The one thing I feel that I'm missing is the husband having some sort of leverage on Asuka in order to fully justify her enduring his controlling behavior and abuse towards both herself and their children.

Just in case you are wondering why I would put Asuka through so much bullshit, it's to pave the path for the actual story that I've thought of: Namely, that one day, Asuka's miserable life takes a 180 turn when she finds her husband has inexplicably become a much better person, unaware that he's suffered the fate of Kousaku Kawajiri at the hands of Shinji Ikari, who was desperately seeking an identity to assume via the powers of his Stand-like Evangelion in order to hide from his enemies (basically a bunch of Eva-using Serial Killers that Shinji was trying to hunt down, but managed to ambush him and force the man to go low for the time being).

... Speaking of which, I'm currently stumped over coming up with a good title.

Having watched this video about the debut of Escanor from The Seven Deadly Sins and read a little about him, I've started wondering about a scenario where Evangelion characters are put in plot similar to the aforementioned manga, with seven of them embodying the seven deadly sins.

Then it hit me that I'm basically trying to figure out what Asuka would be like if she was the Escanor of the story. Now I'm imagining Nobody Dies' nerdy and shy teen Asuka as the "night form", and a She-Hulk-like adult Asuka as the physically massive and ultra-powerful "day form".

Fun fact: The leader of The Seven Deadly Sins' eponymous Cast Herd embodies the sin of Wrath. And who's the best fit for "Wrath" in the Evangelion cast? Shinji, the one person that is arguably the most ill-suited to be a leader, despite how many fanfics portray him (notwithstanding those that drastically alter his personality due to giving him a very different upbringing).

Got a major surprise today.

Yesterday I saw a warning on Reddit about a Russian site ripping AO3's content with zero permission from either AO3 or the authors whose fics are getting ripped, followed by a description today about excluding specific sites from Google search results to find unauthorized copies. So I casually ran a search for SCE and it turned out it was mentioned by name on a few imageboards back in 2015! And not in a negative light either, but alongside Nobody Dies and Shinji and WH40K. In fact, two of those posts expressed sorrow for "the author having unfortunately dropped it".

That definitely brought some mirth into an otherwise awful day on an awful week.

I have a serious question that's technically "general fanfic" but was mainly brought out by several Evangelion fanfic ideas that I've been working on in recent months: What does it say about me when a lot of my fanfic ideas ultimately end up becoming "plot with a LOT of porn (often of the kinky kind)" even when the fanfic idea itself doesn't require any of such smut to work (i.e. it can happen off-screen)?

Simple exmaple: Months ago, I came up with the idea of adult versions of Shinji, Rei, Asuka, Toji, Kensuke, Hikari, Kaworu, Mayumi, Mana, Musashi, Keita, and Mari as the crew of a Baneblade-like supertank. Last week, I went back to it and started expanding on my bare-bones notes... and before I realized it, I was imagining a late-stage scene where the crew is having a group session of psychic sex with the Anthropomorphic Personification of their tank's Machine Spirit note .

[up] I'd say you like your fics to be "plot"-dense. grin

So, the central premise of the ideas that have been rummaging around in my head for the last couple of years is a post-3I setting, roughly 12-13 years after End. Instead of everyone leaving the Sea of Souls all at once after Asuka like I've seen in some fics, her leaving triggered a slow but relatively steady trickle of souls out; most of humanity is out of the Sea in the time period I'm imagining, but there are still in the order of hundreds of millions and possibly more that haven't emerged. Civilization is largely back up and functioning...haven't thought much further than that.

To address the issue of the souls still in the Sea, Japan's government has coordinated a sort of discovery/rescue operation that I had a name for at one time but now can't remember. It consists of a series of solar-powered motion detectors installed along the coastline of the central island and some of the other islands, with more being installed all the time, and teams of watchers stationed every 50 miles or so along the coast who continuously monitor the signals from the detectors. If they register a roughly human-sized mass leaving the sea, they broadcast a signal to the monitoring stations and the team at the closest station is dispatched to meet the person and help them with the transition back to the real world.

Shinji is the head of one of these recovery teams, stationed near a beach on the outskirts of a city near the former location of Tokyo-3. His team is, as you might expect, a bunch of wildly contrasting personalities, and trying to keep them managed is a source of daily frustration. He was the originator of the idea of the recovery teams, proposing the idea to the Japanese government and volunteering to head a team once it was approved, mainly out of a desire for atonement for what happened to humanity. Personality-wise, he's still shy, a little insecure, and nervous around the ladies, which factors into how he relates to his teammates, although he's much more well adjusted than he was in the anime...I'll talk about that later, I'm out of time now.

Interesting, but there are some big point of concern: A lot of modern technology would rapidlynote  start to break down the moment you remove the human element, sometimes catastrophically.

Then there's the issue of people with certain diseases and disorders that cannot survive without medical technology, or perhaps even move; would those people's recorporation come hand in hand with being miraculously cured of whatever was ailing them, even if the cause is genetic rather than pathogenic or a past injury?

I'd say you like your fics to be "plot"-dense. grin
I should've also mentioned that by the time of the In Medias Res prologue, the entire crew is more or less comfortable with any level of undress around each other (all the way to full nudity)* and have Love Dodecahedron-grade polyamorous relationships ranging from actual romance (e.g. Hikari/Touji) to very loose "friendship with benefits" (e.g. Asuka/Musashi), with pretty much everyone being bisexual to some extent.

  • A natural byproduct of spending the first few years as a crew sharing the same communal quarters and bathroom both in the megatank and in the actual base facilities they operated from, and unable to afford the precious luxury of, say, splitting shower time by sex. It didn't help that some mixed-sex subsets of the crew members (e.g. Mana+Musashi+Keita and Kaworu+Mari) had already been living together and used to such a living arrangement for a long time before joining the crew.

[up] Those aspects hadn't even crossed my mind...I said a long time back that I've come up with scenes and small segments but nothing even remotely close to an actual story and that's still the case. It might make more sense to have the time stretch be in the order of 20 years or so to give humanity more time to recover and get things up and running as much as possible, but Shinji being in his mid-20s has always how I've imagined him. As far as the state of people coming back, that's an interesting question. I imagine that having your body completely broken down into primordial soup and then reconstituted if you came back would probably fix pretty much any ailments/injuries you had, but then that raises the question of whether or not Asuka's arm and eye are healed. She seems to have full use of her arm since it's the one that was split that she touches Shinji's face with, but it's bandaged...and we have no idea about her eye. In the scenario I have in mind, I imagine there's some people in the Sea who have gained just enough sense of self to realize their situation but know that they were sick or badly injured before and don't want to leave out of fear that if they come back, they'll be just like they were.

See, the reason I drew a distinction between genetic disorders on the one hand and pathogenic illnesses and injuries on the other hand is that the latter are external disruptions to the body's integrity, whereas the former is an innate, heritable trait of the body.

My own take on this is that whether the injury/illness comes back or not depends on whether being injured/ill became a part of the individual's self-image. If you got sliced wide open just seconds prior to your tanging and subsequently come back, you know have a gaping open wound that will never heal. Even if it's stitched/stapled together, the flesh will simply not knit itself back together and any chemical attempt at making it do so gradually reverts as the body regenerates into the injured state, rather than the healthy state.

That doesn't mesh with how Asuka had been tanged quite shortly after she was torn apart by the MP Evas' eviserating Eva 02, yet when she came back she's whole (note how the bandage on her arm doesn't actually match the fact that said arm was split in two along the proximal-distal axis).

On a note that returns to my previous "plot ends up gaining a heavy porn aspect" phenomenon...

WARNING - has considerably NSFW descriptions
You the premise of Surrogate of Zero, right? Godlike avatar of Instrumentalitized humanity Shinji gets summoned by Louise de La Valliere as her familiar? Well, I've been working on a fanfic that takes that basic premise, replaces Shinji with Rei (one who is centuries/millennia old by now due to being immortal) from an Instrumentality scenario that has Gone Horribly Right (from the POV of Gendo/Seele), has her with a considerable dose of Blue-and-Orange Morality due to both her personality and atypical life experiences (being driven insane and then back to "sanity" by Instrumentality included), and the main point of the fanfic is to more or less troll everyone and everything in ZNT with how absurdly overpowered and uncontrollable Louise's familiar is note .

... The thing is, what started as having Rei snap at Kirche when the redhead makes fun of Louise for being underdeveloped (this Rei hates shameless bullying more than she hates how Louise treats her) by transforming into a goddess-like adult form that makes Kirche look like a flat-chested rectangular-figured brat in comparison, soon turned into her giving the entire academy's student body and staff inferiority complexes because not only is she more womanly-bodied than any of the females, she's more manly than any of the males (her Goddess Mode's dress, while not exactly skimpy in skin coverage, is quite sheer and she has forgone any underwear), and she demonstrates that fact in her first public transformation into Goddess Mode by lifting off the ground one of Louise's male bullies on nothing more than her rapidly growing erection (yes, it's that huge) note .

And over the course of the rest of the story, she seduces several characters (canon or OC) and gathers a veritable harem of her own. Apparently the first time she used Self-Duplication to have sex with herself left such a strongly positive impression upon her that sex is one of the few things she truly enjoys in her now-immortal life.
