Sandbox / Sequelitis Wick Check

Go To

This is a wick check for Sequelitis.

  • Why?: Sequelitis is supposed to mean 'Franchise gets worse with each new installment', but frequently gets misused to refer to any bad sequel in general.
  • Wicks checked: 14/50

Franchise gets worse with each passing installment (Correct) (2/50)
  • YMMV.X Com: Sequelitis: After the original, the overall quality of each successive installment of the series was lower than the previous, regardless of their genre, until XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Since then, the series' reception has gone uphill to the point where it's credited with revitalizing the turn-based strategy genre. This is correct, as it states that the quality went down with each instalment, even though it eventually stopped.
  • ZeroPunctuation.Tropes E To H: He views the whole Resident Evil franchise as representative of a cycle that Capcom is stuck in and has looped around a few times now: create a popular landmark title before degenerating into increasingly mediocre sequels reliant on "dull-witted escalationism" of the same formulainvoked ("Survival Horror adventure in enclosed, monster-filled environment, find a secret lab and defeat the main baddie after they turn into a giant monster") before resulting in an unexpected reinvention that salvages the series, only to go back to chasing its own trends and overly-bloated mythos. Even as he gave praise to Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, he already anticipated in his review that Capcom was rapidly going to descend back into its old habits (which he seemingly verified with Resident Evil Village, which he found significantly less focused than its immediate predecessor). Though this is Yahtzee's opinion, it's still correct, as he considers the franchise to decay with each installment, albeit with breaks inbetween.
Bad sequel in a franchise, even if the series has been largely well received until that point (7/50)
  • YMMV.Trail Of The Pink Panther: Sequelitis: Unanimously considered as the first bad film in the franchise (or second, if you consider "Inspector Clouseau", which was made without the involvement of Edwards and Sellers). The general consensus is that the plot is non-existent, that the way Edwards decided to honor the late Sellers, with deleted scenes from The Pink Panther Strikes Again, is of dubious taste (to say the least) and that the film ends without conclusion, leaving loose ends for the next sequel. It says itself: "The first bad film in the franchise"
  • YMMV.Tomb Raider Chronicles: Sequelitis: Chronicles is universally acclaimed as this. Even the dev team admitted they knocked it out fast and without much care, just to fulfill their contractual obligation and secure funding for the next game. Just one bad sequel isn't enough to qualify as Sequelitis.
  • YMMV.Spyro Enter The Dragonfly: Sequelitis: Enter the Dragonfly is generally nowhere near as liked as the original trilogy due to its rampant bugs, short length and poor animation. This is just one bad game. The series has had several better regarded games after this.
  • SoBadItsGood.Video Games: Final Fantasy VII Dirge of Cerberus has appalling gameplay, a Shadow-the-Hedgehog-esque sulky edgelord protagonist, a plot basically stolen from Metal Gear Solid, and is an inferior follow-up to one of the most beloved games of all time, just to add to the shoddiness. However, it's just playable enough to be tolerable, and the campy, overwrought plot full of demons, bishounens and weird sexual undertones is chewed on by the actors and an utter riot of Narm Charm. Fandom has endured for the original game, Crisis Core and Advent Children, but Dirge only maintains an ironic one. States that it's an inferior follow-up. Not that the franchise declines in quality with each installment.
  • YMMV.Wipeout: Sequelitis: While it may be a little bit well received, Wipeout Fusion was criticized for being Pod Racer-ish, having different graphics compared to Wip3out and the gameplay being vastly different, placing an emphasis on its needlessly over-complicated weapons system compared to other titles. The track design was also derided by critics and fans alike. Only one bad sequel.
  • YMMV.Ys V Lost Kefin Kingdom Of Sand: Sequelitis: The original SNES game is often ranked at the bottom of popularity polls, and it's not just because of the bevy of changes to Ys V. First, this game came out after Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys that had a strong soundtrack and impressive narrative presentation. The music in Ys V is, while not bad, nothing home to write about compared to The Dawn of Ys or other works by the Falcom Sound Team jdk, nor is the story as memorable or interesting, despite exploring a new environment of the Ys lore. Ys V also removed "Bump Attack" combat system, a change that stuck for future entries. However, Ys V does little to reinvent the game-play in its replacement, so what remains is an unremarkable game overshadowed by other Action RPGs on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (some would prefer The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past over Ys V, despite the former being released four years earlier). It's not a bad game, but the general fan reception is that Ys V needs a Video Game Remake by Falcom to truly make it a worthy Ys installment. Only explains why the game is a weaker entry in its series, not that the series declines with each installment.
  • YMMV.Chuggaaconroy: Chugga admitted in the penultimate episode of Pikmin 2 that the process of Let's Playing the game made him realize he didn't like the game nearly as much as he remembered. Emile concluded he found the game to be vastly inferior to the original, despite thinking the opposite going into the project. Only explains that he considers the first sequel to be inferior to the first, not that he views the franchise as decaying with each installment.

    Only had one sequel (3/50)

    Really Sophomore Slump (0/50)

    ZCE and Unclear use (2/50)

  • YMMV.The Mummy Trilogy: Sequelitis:
    • While fans often think The Mummy Returns averts the trope, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor wasn't so lucky.
    • The Scorpion King 2 is a prequel to a prequel to a sequel to a remake of a movie from the 1930's. Wheras The Scorpion King 3 and The Scorpion King 4 are sequels to the first Scorpion King film, which in fact was the prequel to a prologue of a sequel to a remake of the movie from the 1930's. Head hurting yet? The former merely implies that it's bad and the latter only states that the sequels exist.
  • Horrible.Video Game Generations Fifth To Sixth: The Land Before Time is a beloved film; its numerous sequels less so, though they still have their fans. Bring in Sound Source Interactive / creator/TDK Mediactive and then you have a reason why absolutely no one who would defend the three games released for the PlayStation quite late in its lifespan: The Land Before Time: Return to the Great Valley, Great Valley Racing Adventure, and Big Water Adventure. Only a pothole implying that the sequels are bad. Nothing about them declining with each installment.
