Recap / Fairy May Cry, 38 "Turning the Tide"

Go To

As the battle against Faust, Nelo Angelo and the Edolas Army rages on, the Strongest Team receive much-needed aid from the Edolas Fairy Tail.

  • Adaptational Expansion: We get a glimpse of Modeus' time training under Sparda.
  • All-Loving Hero: Fairy Tail refuse to stand by and let the Edolas Army attack the exceeds to turn them into a power source.
  • Alternate Self: The recently released Earthland members of Fairy Tail meet more of the Edolas counterparts.
  • Always Someone Better: In a flashback Modeus outright tells Sparda his brother Baul is a better swordsman than him. Sparda agrees, but says Modeus has the same quality that lead to him rebelling against Mundus and becoming the Big Good he is today.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: Lucy and Lisanna perform this when facing the Edolas army.
  • Badass Crew: Fairy Tail prove to be this no matter the world, with the Earthland members holding their own against the Edolas army's vastly superior numbers and the appearance of the Edolas version turns the tide decisively in their favour.
  • Battle Aura: Modeus' new forms manifests a bright silver aura.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Edolas Fairy Tail arrive just in time to save their Earthland counterparts from being overwhelmed.
  • Blood Knight: Nelo Angelo, as per usual, though in this case it's more looking forward to slaughtering opponents than facing a serious fight.
  • Bottomless Magazines: Subverted for Lady as the final battle of Edolas continues. A day of nonstop fighting means she no longer has ammo left in her rocket launcher and a very limited amount in her pistols, having to resort to hand-to-hand more often.
  • Break the Haughty: At the end of the fight with her Earthland counterpart, Erza Knightwalker concedes she is the stronger of the two, agreeing with Dante's assessment that she is a "cheap copy".
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Nelo Angelo casually admits he's long since lost track of the number of people he's killed during his time in Edolas.
  • Combat Breakdown: Erza and Knightwalker's final battle begins with the two pulling out more and more of their respective arsenals, but by the end, both are reduced to hand-to-hand and eventually just slugging each other in the face.
  • Dare to Be Badass: Lucy Ashley gives an epic one to her guildmates, encouraging them to stop running and fight, unknowingly echoing her Earthland counterpart in the process.
Edolas Lucy: Before I made my way back here, Dante told me something. He told me 'when you have power, don't use it for yourself, use it to stand up for those who can't stand up for themselves! All iving beings have a right to pursue their own happiness! When someone tries to take that right away from them, stand up to that someone, don't back down! If they won't listen to reason, then take a stand. Even if you're staring straight into the Gates of Hell itself! Don't back down! Fight!' Well it's high time we took a stand!
    (on Battlefield)
Lucy: We can't give up! No matter what happens... we gotta keep fighting!
Edolas Lucy: Are we gonna leave them to die on the battlefield?! Or are we gonna lend them a hand?! The future of Edolas is at stake! Not just us, but every man, woman, and child!
Lucy: I'll bet Natsu, Dante and Erza are still in it! If they can find the strength to keep going, then I know I can too!
Edolas Lucy: I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm tired of always running away from fights! The Gates of Hell are right at our doorstep and it's time we stood up to the monsters on the other side!
Lucy: We've got to keep fighting!
Edolas Lucy (Berserker Tears): We gotta face our foes head on!
Both: Because that's what it means to be a Fairy Tail wizard!
  • Determinator: Fairy Tail refuses to ease up even as their exhaustion grows worse and the Edolas soldiers keep coming.
  • Everyone Knew Already: Pretty much all the members of Edolas Fairy Tail figured out that Lisanna wasn't their Lisanna years ago, but felt it was Elfman and Mirajane's place to say.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: When Modeus unleashes his Devil Trigger thanks to finally understanding what Sparda meant about the power of the soul all these years ago, Nelo Angelo is unable to wrap his head around the concept.
  • Flashback Echo: Nelo Angelo's comment about reaping Modeus' soul triggers a memory the latter had from his time with Sparda.
  • Foreshadowing: Lady is shocked to hear her counterpart still goes by Mary and is reluctant to discuss the reason she changed her name.
  • Frying Pan of Doom: Mary's weapon of choice when saving her Earthland counterpart.
  • Greater-Scope Paragon: We get our first onscreen glimpse of Sparda in Modeus' flashback. He lives up to his reputation by giving his student the gift he needs to turn the tide in the present.
  • Good Colours, Evil Colours:
    • Erza Scarlets Armadura Fairy armour clashes against Erza Knightwalkers Revalt Spear, emitting green and purple auras respectively.
    • Modeus's silver against Nelo Angelo's darker colours.
    • The Dragon Slayers and Dante's fight against Faust in the Dorma Anim carries over the same colours as the last chapter.
  • He Is Not My Boyfriend: Lucy firmly states to her Edolas counterpart that Loke is not her boyfriend when asked about his flirting.
  • Horrifying the Horror: Nelo Angelo, the terrifying, eternally smug, Knight of Cerebus finds himself completely outmatched by Modeus's new Super Mode, and is terrified.
  • Humans Are Bastards/Humans Are Special: The views espoused by Erza's Knightwalker and Scarlet respectively.
  • Kick Them While They Are Down: Nelo Angelo can clearly finish off the injured Modeus, but prolongs the fight to watch his opponent suffer, and even taunts him about all the other people he's going to kill.
  • Kind Hearted Cat Lover: Lisanna's main Take Over for the chapter is her Cat Soul, which she uses to defend the exceeds from the Edolas soldiers.
  • My Life Flashed Before My Eyes: Downplayed by Modeus, whose beatdown at Nelo Angelo's hands reminds him of his promise to come back alive to Wendy and a meaningful conversation he had with Sparda when he was younger, giving him a Heroic Second Wind.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Nelo Angelo decides to toy with an already injured Modeus to make him suffer, on top of telling him how he'll kill Edolas and Earthland Fairy Tail, capped off by claiming he'll reap his soul first. This gives time for Modeus to recall a meaningful conversation he had with Sparda (triggered by his foes choice of words) and gain a Heroic Second Wind to turn the battle into his favour.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • Lisanna fights alongside the Earthland members of Fairy Tail using her Cat Soul instead of arriving with the rest of Edolas Fairy Tail.
    • Edolas Eva and Mary join Lucy Ashley attempting to convince the rest of their guild to join the fight.
    • Lisanna meeting her Edolas siblings while using her Cat Soul has her reveal they knew for some time she wasn't their Lisanna, while in canon she didn't learn until the end of the arc.
    • Trish is the one to pull a Neck Lift on an Edolas soldier instead of Gray.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Dante calls out Faust on his hypocrisy, pointing out how he's hoarding all magic for himself than collecting it for his people.
Dante: Quit acting like you're some big savior! You're not! You may have fooled everyone else, but not us! You just want to keep the power for yourself, if you really gave a crap about your world, you would have shared your power instead of killing everyone else just so you can have it all! You're no god, you're just a power-hungry whack job!
  • Simple Solution Won't Work: When members Edolas Fairy Tail suggest waiting until the battle is over and taking on the exhausted victor, Edolas Lucy and Eva point out they'd simply move onto their next target, i.e., them, straight afterwards anyway. Not to mention all the other damage they could do in the meantime.
  • Super Mode: Modeus unlocks one similar to Dante's Devil Trigger, letting him inflict a Curb-Stomp Battle on Nelo Angelo//Onyx Reaper, to Fausts utter shock.
  • Taking the Bullet: Carla takes a magic bullet that would have hit Happy.
  • Team Mom: On top of acting like one for Lucy Ashley, Edolas Eva clearly plays this role to the rest of Edolas Fairy Tail, chewing them out for their cowardice while their friends fight for them.
  • True Companions: No matter what the world is, Fairy Tail is still Fairy Tail, with the Edolas version showing up just in time to rescue the Earthland members.
  • Unflinching Walk: Modeus's new Super Mode lets him pull this off against Nelo Angelo.
  • Unstoppable Force Meets An Immoveable Object: Knightwalker's Ravelt spear against Erza's Armadura Fairy Armor results in both breaking.
  • Worthy Opponent: A mutual example between the two Erza's, declaring the battle between them a draw.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Trish's reaction when even more Edolas soldiers arrive atop Legions.
