"Why aren't you upstairs sleeping with your girlfriend like everyone else?"
Turtle, to Krillin outside Kame House

Original Airdate: December 19, 2012

With Goku gone, the Z-Fighters find themselves attempting to return to normalcy. Gohan becomes the breadwinner of his household, Yamcha tries to find a friendship with Bulma, and Krillin...

Thanks to a convenient life insurance policy, Krillin finds himself with several million dollars and a new life as "Juan Sanchez". He even finds an attractive girlfriend in the ditzy Maron. However, he soon realizes that he may not be able to handle having such a wonderful life if it means lying about even his identity.

If it really upsets you, we can all take turns pounding these tropes, okay?

  • Aborted Arc: Invoked and Enforced! Garlic Jr. is set up as a major villain, slaughtering an entire town with his henchmen in The Teaser and even having his own unique intro. However, in The Stinger, his attempt to intimidate Mr. Popo goes about as well as you'd expect. As such, Popo singlehandedly kills Garlic Jr, his men, and the entire Saga.
  • Adaptational Deviation: The biggest deviation of the plot in the series. Krillin's relationship with Maron and Garlic Jr's quest for world domination end a lot sooner than the original series.
  • Adaptational Intelligence: In the original anime, Maron was a Brainless Beauty played completely straight. Here, it turns out she's only pretending to be a ditz since she's actually a member of the State's Fraud Bureau who's undercover to investigate Krillin's insurance fraud.
  • At Least I Admit It: Maron turns out to be not all that innocent in what she does, and she has no problem admitting this to Krillin when she revealed her true colors.
    Krillin: I'm going to prison, aren't I?
Maron: Well, normally you would, but do you have any idea what they'd do to guys like you? No, you'll just have to pay back everything you owe.
Krillin: Wait, what about all the money I spent on you?
Maron: You'll just have to pay that out of pocket!
Krillin: BUT I DROPPED OVER 500 GRAND ON YOU!
Maron: Honey, I work for the government. I never claimed to be a good person.
  • Bait-and-Switch Credits: A completely new opening credit sequence is used solely for this episode to tease an adaptation of the Garlic Jr. saga, interspersing moments from the entirety of the saga's run. The vast majority of the clips go unused thanks to Mr. Popo's immediate dispatching of Garlic Jr. and his minions in the episode's stinger. This was intentional, as both KaiserNeko and Lanipator made a hint that they had no intention of fully covering the saga.
  • Bilingual Bonus:
    • At one point, Maron calls Krillin her "sweet little chestnut". Krillin's name is a corruption of "Kuririn", with "kuri" being Japanese for "chestnut".
    • Maron tells Krillin to make reservations at a restaurant called "L'Anus Serré" and that they're apparently very uptight. "L'anus serré" essentially means "tight anus" in French.
  • Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: When Maron meets Yajirobe and Korin, she asks that if they had children, would they be little fat men or kitties. Korin responds that they'd probably be fat kitties.
  • Breather Episode: Outside of Popo assimilating Garlic Jr. and his crew, the episode is one, taking place in between the Namek Saga and the events leading into the Android Saga.
  • Brick Joke:
    • Gohan "pounding Chi-Chi's tuna".
    • The start of the episode has the Paozu Mountain Tuna finally flourishing again ever since Goku was gone. However, Gohan starts fishing on his behalf, putting the breed back to the endangered species list and becomes extremely rare. Later, to emphasize the fish's rarity, Krillin is concerned and talking to Turtle about pleasing Maron with gifts, including expensive caviar.
      Turtle: Beluga?
      Krillin: No. Paozu Tuna.
      Turtle: Wow. That's rare!
  • Bullying a Dragon: Trying to go ahead with his evil plans, Garlic Jr. posits a hostile takeover of the lookout to Mr. Popo and tries to intimidate him. It's not long before he learns his lesson.
  • Call-Back: Krillin mentioned filling for life insurance before traveling to Namek. He finally cashes it in under a different name, following his death by Freeza and resurrection by Porunga, but it bites him in the ass by the end of the episode.
  • The Ditz: Subverted; Maron acts very ditzy for most of the episode, but it's all an act.
  • Death by Adaptation: In the Garlic Jr. Saga, the villain is sent back into the Dead Zone. Here, he suffers much worst at the hands of Popo. It's implied that he does not survive.
  • Exiled to the Couch: Kami visits Piccolo because he was kicked out of the Lookout for the day. Mr. Popo had a "booty call".
    Jynx: Jynx, Jynx, Jynx!
Mr. Popo: Shut up, bitch, you love it!
Kami: Last time he did this, I found five corpses. He laughed when I said "five".
  • Gold Digger: Double Subverted with Maron. Throughout the episode, it's strongly implied that she only became Krillin's girlfriend because of his newfound wealth (with Turtle even lampshading it, saying "Bitch is a gold digger"), and Krillin even worries that this is the case, but it turns out it was all just an act so she could bust Krillin for insurance fraud. However, in the end she still keeps the 500 grand's worth of gifts Krillin gave her after she reveals her true intentions and dumps him.
  • Gossip Evolution: What happens eventually with Krillin's "pounding tuna" joke, as it eventually gets to Chi-Chi. When she demands answers, it actually gets worse.
Chi-Chi: Alright! I demand to know who has been spreading rumors that I have been forcing Gohan to, and I quote, "POUND MY TUNA!"
Krillin: Look Chi-Chi, if it really upsets you, we'll all take turns pounding your tuna, ok? But, only if we get to eat it together.
Roshi: (off-screen) ...Heh heh heh HEH HEH! AAAAAAlHAA! AAAA-
  • Hope Spot: Apparently, Paozu Tuna have been fished so often by Goku, that the species almost went into extinction. With everyone on Namek save for Chi-Chi and Ox King, the Tuna had been left alone long enough to breed back to a more sustainable population, according to a wildlife researcher... until Gohan takes over for Goku while he is in space.
Researcher: Oh, sweet salty Christ no.
  • Innocent Innuendo: In addition to the "pounding tuna" joke, there's the page quote from Turtle about why Krillin was on the beach at Kame House late at night instead of in bed.
  • Insurance Fraud: Before going to Namek, Krillin took out a huge life insurance policy and named his brother as the beneficiary. While he did die while on Namek thanks to Freeza, and was brought back to life by Porunga, it's still technically fraud since he doesn't really have a brother, and was posing as him under a fake name. He ends up getting found out by Maron, a government agent who was only pretending to be his girlfriend so she could get him to confess to it.
  • Internal Reveal: Kami finds out that Piccolo fused with Nail. When he alerts him that Namekian fusion is forbidden, Piccolo tells him his face is forbidden.
  • Jaw Drop: Krillin does this when Maron reveals that she's actually a government agent and she just recorded him admitting to insurance fraud; his jaw drops so hard that it leaves an impact in the sand.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: As underhanded as she was, Maron was right to expose Krillin's Insurance Fraud. It didn't matter if she believed he was killed by a space tyrant and revived by a magical dragon. It only mattered that he was using a fake name for the benefits.
  • Lower-Deck Episode: The episode focuses on Krillin and Maron's relationship while completely sidelining Garlic Jr.
  • Male Gaze: We get a decently long shot of Maron's butt as Krillin stares at "that perfect heart-shaped pillow of an ass".
  • Noodle Incident: Kami mentions that the last time Mr. Popo had a "booty call", he found five corpses. And apparently that wasn't even all of them, since Mr. Popo laughed when Kami only counted "five".
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Maron may seem just as ditzy as she was in the original anime, but this turns out to be an act since she's a government agent who's only pretending to be Krillin's girlfriend so she can bust him for insurance fraud.
  • Oh, My Gods!: Kami says "Oh my ME!" when he sees what was the aftermath of Mr. Popo's brief battle with Garlic Jr. and his henchmen.
  • Plot-Irrelevant Villain: Despite hyping as the Big Bad of the arc, Garlic Jr.'s place in the story has nothing to do with Krillin's story, hence being so insignificant that he ends up being killed by Mr. Popo for breaking his stuff despite his immortality.
  • The Scrooge: Despite his new windfall, Krillin's birthday present for Turtle is a gift card from The Gap.
  • Stunned Silence: The Z crew when Krillin says this Innocent Innuendo:
Krillin: Well, we saw Gohan earlier, but he was busy pounding the tuna.
    Everyone else: (stunned silence)
Krillin: What?! With Goku gone, Chi-Chi needs someone to do it!
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Maron being this to Bulma is lampshaded by the latter.
Bulma: Okay, first of all, no one screws Yamcha but life. Second of all, blue hair? Real original.
  • That Came Out Wrong: Krillin refers to Gohan "pounding [Chi-Chi's] tuna." He's only talking about Gohan being in charge of fishing for his family's food (specifically Paozu tuna, a rare breed of fish in this universe), but everyone except him notices the Double Entendre.
  • Victoria's Secret Compartment: Maron reveals that this is where she kept her recorder in order to record Krillin confessing to his insurance fraud, since it was the one place he couldn't reach.

Kami: Mr. Popo, I'm back and I—Oh my ME, what happened to the Lookout?!
Mr. Popo: Oh don't mind this, Kami. I just had a bit of Italian for dinner.
Kami: What does that have to do with—
Mr. Popo: 'CAUSE IT WAS NOTHIN' BUT GARLIC!
