Mythology Gag / Roller Brawl: The Mega Cyborg

Go To

There's a lot of references to both series.

  • Kaos's dialogue as he wakes up pay homage to one of his diary entires, specifically on how his mother wanted him to open a safe deposit box to store the source of his power.
  • Roller Brawl's last words as she crosses the Despair Event Horizon in Chapter 1 pay homage to the infamous lines of Zero at Iris's death in Mega Man X4.
There's no reason for me to go on. There's nothing for me to be fighting for.
  • Guts Man, as seen in the cast list, is meant to be seen as voiced by Garry Chalk, who voiced him in the Ruby Spears cartoon. Metal Man and Snake Man also retain their voices from said cartoon, both being imagined as being voiced by Ian James Corlett. So too does Dr. Wily, voiced by Scott McNeil and retaining his German accent.
  • Several to Mega Man Powered Up
    • Roller Brawl's thoughts about Bomb Man reflect Dr. Wily's reasons for rejecting Bomb Man if he is the playable character, pointing out that a party-centric brain and bombs seems like a bad combination.
    • CWU-01P has the same Machine Monotone it had there, even spouting the same dialogue as an introduction.
    Intruders...bad. Eliminate intruders.
    • When attacking Oil Man, Fire Man points out there "...ain't nothing more flammable than oil, pardner!", referencing the dialogue he has with Oil Man if Oil Man is the playable character going through his stage.
    • Quick Man's introduction, similarly, pays homage to Dr. Wily's first lines of dialogue.
Dr. Wily: The one and only — the brilliant scientist Dr. Wily! It may seem rather sudden to you, but I've decided I'd like to take over the world!
Quick Man: I'm here to announce that my creator, the brilliant scientist Dr. Wily, has returned. It may be rather sudden to you, but you and the city, not to mention the rest of the world, are going to pay for his past embarrassments!
    • In response to Dr. Lalinde realizing she still loves Quake Woman as a daughter after removing her emotions, Sergeant Night states "How pathetic! I can't believe you're serious." This dialogue is straight from the Copy Robot if the player Robot Master is Fire Man.
  • The chapter explaining the schematics of the Skyborgs' new bodies are based on the explanations from Mega Man Megamix while also incorporating the CD data from Mega Man & Bass, complete with good and bad points and likes and dislikes. For Roller Brawl specifically, the author mentions that they were inspired by Enker's Mirror Buster and Model P for the Leech Claw.
  • During their talk during Dr. Wily's transport, Roller Brawl brings up the villains of Skylands introduced in Trap Team, pointing out while some can be redeemed like Broccoli Guy and Krankenstein, others have no remorse like Kaos and the Golden Queen. She also wonders if Earth has Traptanium.
  • During the fight against the Sniper Joe ambush, Roller Brawl uses fellow Undead Skylander Chop Chop's Character Catchphrase ("Slice and Dice!").
  • Roller Brawl's flashbacks include Topsy Derby, a Canon Immigrant from IDW's Skylanders comic, and also one of Roller Brawl's names in development.
  • The Darklanders are meant to be the Evil Knockoffs Kaos used to try to get to the Eternal Sources of Water, Life, Undead, and Fire in the first Skylanders game.
  • The first chapter of the Mega Man 2 arc is titled "Dr. Wily's Revenge! Bubble! Boil!".
  • Roller Brawl wonders if Bubble Man's name was Aqua Man, and similarly wonders if Crash Man is Drill Man.
  • The explanation for the Bubble Lead is directly taken from Mega Man Megamix: the water's electromagnetic field is altered to form powerful hydrogen bonds to keep the bubbles from popping while being further stabilized by sulfuric acid.
  • Air Man's dialogue in his debut makes reference to his first appearance in Mega Man: Fully Charged, specifically in how weak bots should bow down to him because he's the greatest and the greatest at being the greatest, with Mega Man offering the chance to surrender peacefully. Coincidentally, Air Man first appeared in the tenth episode of Mega Man: Fully Charged while he's introduced in the tenth chapter of the fanfic, even having the same voice actor of Ian Hanlin.
  • Quick Man fairs poorly against Roller Brawl's use of the Air Shooter, which was his weakness in Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters.
  • The battle cry of the Skylanders from Skylanders Academy, "Skylanders Unite!", is used once again, but the Skyborgs modify it to "Skyborgs Unite!".
  • Most Skyborg schematics are based on their in-game counterparts and aspects of other parts of the Mega Man franchise, noted here.
    • Hot Dog's Magmutt Minion is based on a combination of Flame Stag's Speed Burner and Commander Yammark's Yammar Option. Additionally, his abilities reference the final upgrades on both his upgrade paths: the Pyro Pinwheel Comet comes from the Pyro Pinwheel upgrade from "Burning Bow-Wow", and the Magmutt Minion is based on Magmutt Battalion from "Pyro Pooch".
    • Trigger Happy's Golden Gatling is based on a combination of Needle Man's Needle Cannon and Magma Man's Magma Bazooka, and his unique abilities primarily reflect his "Golden Frenzy" upgrade path.
    • Whirlwind's abilities work as a combination of the Hyper Bomb, Spark Shock, and Drill Bomb, with some additional aspects of the Mega Man Battle Network 4: Red Sun and Blue Moon take on ThunderMan.EXE. It also reflects her "Tempest Dragon" upgrade path alongside the Cloudburster Wow Pow of her series 2 version.
    • Cynder's powers work as a combination of the Pile Driver from Mega Man 11 and the Comet Dash from Mega Man Unlimited, with attributes of Dynamo Man. Her powers take further inspiration from both of her upgrade paths: the ability of the "ghosts" to slow down enemies comes from the "Shadowdancer" path, while her ability to make them explode with electricity comes from the "Nether Wielder" path.
    • Hex's Skull Storm is directly inspired by her Rain of Skulls ability and takes cues from her Skull Shield Soul Gem, which let her use her skulls as an Orbiting Particle Shield. It also takes cues from the Water Shield and Astro Crush.
  • Ice Man mentions hating saunas, which were his noted dislike in his CD data from Mega Man & Bass.
  • A darker example is the area where Whirlwind, Hex, and Cynder end up, being a shallow t-shaped pool. This was deliberately made to resemble the insides of the Leviathan, and they fight the Evil Knockoff versions of Zap, Gill Grunt, and Slam Bam here, much like Leviathan Lagoon in the first Skylanders game.
  • Roller Brawl's Spit Take to Dr. Lalinde being Dr. Light's opponent in the debate on artificial intelligence being lampshaded by Quake Woman mirrors Spyro's in the first episode of Skylanders Academy, with a Mabu lampshading the trope's usage.
  • When Roller Brawl first enters the ARTS convention, she mentions the events of "The Future of Skylands" in Trap Team, where Wolfgang took over the future and bent it to his will.
  • One of the inspirations for Ra Hermes, Quick Man's intended Superior Successor, was his Netnavi counterpart from Mega Man Battle Network 2, having blades on his forearms like QuickMan.EXE.
  • Chapter 20's title is "Blue Moon Tonight, Red Sun Tomorrow" and the signal Suna gives to have the Onyx Axes reveal their true colors is "The blue moon sets, and the red sun rises." Both reference the versions of Mega Man Battle Network 4: Red Sun and Blue Moon.
  • Additionally, Roller Brawl, after taking out an Onyx Axe after revealing to not be Three Laws-Compliant, she performs her magic moment (spinning in place before winking) while using her catchphrase of "Let's Roll", exactly like she does when her figure is put on the Portal of Power in the Skylanders games.
  • Lord Obsidian states in response to Dr. Cossack asking if the love for a creation is genuine whether human or robot that such is "Typical scientist drabble. Naive and ill-informed." This is similar to Sergeant Night's dismissal of the possibility of Ice Man reforming in "Chill Out, Bruh", the 30th episode of Mega Man: Fully Charged.
  • Sergeant Night calls Roller Brawl, Blues, and Xander interlopers, declaring that he'll make them ex-interlopers, reflecting some of Kaos's quotes during the boss battle for the Eternal Undead Source in the first Skylanders game.
  • Dr. Wily assuring Spyro that he's safe is straight from "Electric Nightmare", the second episode of the Ruby Spears cartoon.
You can relax now! You're in...good hands!
  • Concrete Man and Guts Man, after their dam job, sing the lyrics of "Electrical Communication" by Ganasia, the Japanese intro theme for Mega Man 8.
