Funny / Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance

Go To

  • The On the Next segments have been a regular source of comedy throughout the Disgaea series, but the fifth entry's use of CGs instead of sprites leads to some very hilarious Art Shifts. Case in point...
    • Almost all of these segments involve all the men being portrayed as idiots who would do anything and everything for Seraphina's affection, which the characters regularly comment on. Killia gets it the worst, going from stoic badass to lovestruck idiot.
Killia?: Ah, my lovely Seraphina! I will not allow anyone else to have you! Please marry me!
      Killia: ...Who's that?
    • The Episode 5 preview has Seraphina being offered curry from the boys of the team, each with a different style. She has a hard time deciding, only to express trouble eating the three bowls together. This wouldn't be such a gutbuster if she wasn't depicted as exploding with fat, complete with a "Chubby!" caption, after going through about three dozen bowls. Then Usalia tries to push her new show: Magical Girl Usalia Magica.
      • This preview manages to be even funnier in the English version via Casting Gag. To elaborate, the VA for Usalia also plays Madoka Kaname.
    • The Episode 9 features Killia sucessfully beating Void Dark... only to reveal that Void Dark was just the first member of the "Elite Four", a group of Inexplicably Identical Individuals, each with a goofier name than the last.
    • The Episode 10 preview has Red Magnus shriveling down to a bony weakling after Zeroken steals his muscles, with an over-the-top plot on how Red Magnus can get back to his beefy self. Static eventually floods the screen, and when we get vision back, Red Magnus and Zeroken are out on the floor while Seraphina apologizes to the viewer.
    • The Episode 12 preview features Christo doing the narration where it is a shoutout to Great Teacher Onizuka, calling it GTC. Seraphina grades him with an F- for the presentation.
    • The Episode 15 preview has the cast posing as a sentai group. Seraphina is the red ranger, Killia the blue ranger, Christo the green ranger, Zeroken the black ranger, and Usalia the yellow ranger. As for Red Magnus, he's the giant robot they pilot. Killia bluntly asks to cancel the show.
  • Killia walks onto a bloodsoaked battlefield and starts chowing down in the intro sequence. It's so completely incongruous with Seraphina's Prinnies getting their beaks kicked in that you can't help but laugh the first time. Moreso when he turns around and demolishes the giant Lost army he just interrupted.
  • Speaking of curbstomps, Seraphina's Prinny Squad accosts a single Toto Bunny Prinny over stealing their sardine curry, and attack it to get the curry back. The conservation of ninjutsu is in full effect here. Then the main cast chases the thief across another Netherworld to get it back, all while emphasizing how cruel it is that someone would steal their curry more than the fact that their base got invaded. Poor Killia becomes the Only Sane Man.
  • Red Magnus making Zeroken eat a carrot in the background while Christo's having another one of his inner monologues regarding the nature of demons.
  • Killia's drawings of Red Magnus and Lieze.
Christo: Seraphina, can you help me? I don't know much about art, so I don't know how to evaluate it.
Seraphina: Since it's Sir Killia's art, it's probably way too advanced for its time, so no one can understand it...
    • In the same scene in which Killia drew Lieze, Zeroken decides to draw Killia. His art is just as bad. The hilarious part is that the two treat each others' art as masterpieces and dissect each others' "techniques" as if they were renowned art critics. Seraphina and Christo are speechless.
Killia: Hmmm, it's carefree and fearless. It's a very vibrant and lively picture...almost like you drew me with your personality.
Zeroken: Heh heh, thanks, bro, but that's too much of a compliment. The delicacy and precision of your picture goes way beyond my picture, bro.
  • In Chapter 13, Killia goes missing for a bit. Seraphina then finds him eating a large cooked dragon. The delivery is what sells it.
    Seraphina: HE'S EATING SOMETHING CRAAAAAZY!!!
  • In chapter 14, Seraphina is very reluctant to go back to Gorgeous when they find out it's being attacked by Void Dark. Before heading there, she makes a quick phone call to her servants on Gorgeous to do something. When the party arrives, they come across a beautiful nightlife city-like world, which Seraphina brags about before quickly trying to get everyone to return back where they came. However, Killia notices something strange about Gorgeous as it is too pristine for a place attacked by Void Dark. Then Seraphina screams when Zeroken unknowingly revealed the state of Gorgeous; the world they saw was nothing more than a giant set piece on a barren world and Zeroken had accidentally tipped it over.
  • In the Fuka DLC episodes, Desco and Emizel assume Fuka's odd behavior (staying away from sweets and strenuous physical activity) is because she fell in love with Killia. In reality, she had gained weight from eating too many sweets and hates Killia for being able to eat so much yet stay skinny. Hilarity Ensues.
    • The Disgaea D2 episode has Flonne and Sicily trying to keep Laharl out of the castle for some reason. When he, Etna, and Killia show up she drops them down a trap door, and we cut to them back in the Pocket Netherworld...packed in Amazombie.com boxes. Flonne not only defeated three of the most badass characters in the franchise, she shipped them away from her in cardboard.
    • In the Almaz/Sapphire DLC episode, Killia comes upon the two fighting over something. It must be pretty serious if one of Disgaea's prime couples has fallen apart. At the end, they were fighting over...what kind of peanut butter to put on their sandwichs, smooth or chunky? This is funny enough, but when some nearby Prinnies get into the exact same argument, Sapphire just beats the crap out of them both, saying that they shouldn't fight.
      • Earlier in the Almaz/Sapphire Episode, a Prinny actually provokes Sapphire to violence by stating that fights between couples are almost always something dumb blown way out of proportion. This, of course, being Sapphire, causes a rampage that Killia has to stop.
  • Moreso a Brick Joke than anything in some cases, but in the nether research function of the game. One of the netherworlds encountered is Certain Giant.
  • Whenever Usalia is thinking about curry and is interrupted mid thought, she always responds about how she is thinking about things like Birth Control and Global Warming. The fact that someone so young is using such complex issues as an excuse is pretty darn hilarious.
  • In Episode 9, Killia wakes up, much to the joy of everyone. Zeroken especially expresses his belief that Killia would wake up from injuries sustained fighting Void Dark, only for Christo to retort back with this:
Christo: ... Says the man who was crying and digging a grave out back with Red Magnus.
    • The image of Zeroken digging a grave while crying at the same time comes to mind...
  • Speaking of mental images, how about Usalia dick-slapping Red Magnus into submission? After he told her to fight him?
  • All of Christo's conversations with his superior.
  • One skit with Christo has him ask the party what would happen if an angel just so happened to be in their midst. Red Magnus, Zeroken, and Seraphina all agree that the angel would most likely be beaten half to death, at which point Killia notices that Christo is shaking nervously. Obviously, it's because he really is an angel in disguise.
  • One skit has Seraphina move away from accusations of Christo being an angel and interprets his healing of Usalia as being in love with her. She then brings in Usalia to comment, who says they should remain Just Friends. Of course, Christo is clearly not in love with Usalia and unsuccessfully tries to convince Seraphina otherwise. And yet, he still finds Usalia's "Just Friends" comment rather insulting.
  • The Combo moves, when they aren't awesome, are just plain giggle-worthy;
    • Seraphina and Red Magnus; Seraphina puts Red Magnus under her Balor Gaze, then makes him hop into a cannon.
    • Sapphire and Raspberyl; Sapphire is overcome with Cuteness Proximity and begins to chase Raspberyl around, knocking the targets about with their antics. The last shot as the enemies blow up is Sapphire squeezing the life out of Raspberyl.
    • Both curry-related skills:
      • Killia's and Usalia's, Supreme Curry, has Killia prepare a big pot of curry (described as instant curry) and whip up a plate, but realizes that Usalia is nowhere to be found, and decides to eat it himself. Seconds later, Usalia comes running in, and trips over, her head ending up in the curry and gulping the entire pot! She turns out to be okay, much to Killia's relief, and they both get an attack and fire resistance buff.
      • Christo's and Usalia's, Curry Break, has Christo laying the smackdown on up to 9 enemies while Usalia...goes off to enjoy a plate of curry, coming back just in time for the finisher.
    • Majorita's and Usalia's, Great Beast War, has to be seen to be believed. Majorita, Usalia, and the up-to-15 enemies they targeted find a massive shadow cast on them, and they run for their lives. As it turns out, the shadow is due to Usalia's ridable Prinny and one of Majorita's zombie minions inexplicably growing to Kaiju proportions and duking it out with each other amidst a city skyline, with both of their respective masters simply watching in awe at the sight. The battle concludes with one last massive beam blast, Majorita tossing Usalia into a treasure chest for her safety, and she and everyone else getting caught up in the explosion!
    • Almaz and Salvatore's Hero Style Orders has the latter order the former to deflect one of her bullets with his sword. At point-blank range. When Almaz ducks out of the way instead, an angry Salvatore unloads her magazines onto Almaz, with the targeted enemy getting caught in the crossfire.
    • Usalia and Zeroken's Extreme Kick has Zeroken doing a flying kick at a group of enemies, only to overshoot himself and dive right into the moth of Usalia's yellow prinny servant, bloating it. Usalia stomps on it to get Zeroken out but fails, so she jumps up with her rice hammer and smashes the servant prinny, causing it to spit Zeroken out at full speed towards the enemies he missed before.
  • One skit in chapter three has Seraphina order a Prinny to assess the damage after Zeroken has locked the Dimension Gate. First, it turns out Zeroken switched all the fist weapons in the shop with Thimbles. Then, he tried to submit a bill called "fist weapons only". Finally, the Prinny reports that he stole a bunch of sardines. Seraphina asks if they were delicious, and the Prinny accidentally admits they were.
    Seraphina: Death sentence!
    • One has to wonder how Valvatorez would react if he were watching this...
  • The English VAs got some fairly snarky shots in during recording. For example, at one point, a Prinny says "We searched as long as we could open-parentheses three minutes closed-parentheses, but we couldn't find them, dood!" In the text it just has a small (3mins), but the added, quiet dictation is worth a good laugh.
  • How the Maid's Afternoon Tea skill is presented. They don't just pour a cup of tea for the recipient, they cheerfully run down the battlefield in slow motion, carrying a tray with a tea pot and cup on it, only to trip over and spill the pot onto the recipient, and that's what grants an Extra Turn. The recipient doesn't seem to mind, as they go into their "receiving support" lines and animations.
  • The Top Gunner skill. The user gets into a fighter jet, then the view switches to first-person as they fire a volley of missiles at their targets, before doing a loop and crashing into them, with the user's portrait appearing in the sky as if they died (don't worry, they don't take any actual damage). Chances are, you're probably hearing "Danger Zone" in your head throughout the whole thing.
  • Mystery Rooms:
    • One of them is packed with "Commuting Prinnies" for no apparent reason. Packed, as in "only four panels don't have a Prinny on them". Talking to one of the two humanoid NPCs in this room has him accuse you of being a groper, which starts a battle. The fastest way to clear out this room? Toss one of the Prinnies next to the base panel, which creates a chain reaction of explosions that kills everyone on the entire floor except for Mil, including the unit who threw a Prinny unless they're sufficiently over-leveled.
    • Another Mystery Room is basically a bar. One of the patrons asks you if she should throw a pie at her friend. Say yes and she does so. She then gives you a pie...that happens to be a fist weapon. Talk to the pie victim repeatedly and she'll whine about it and trigger a fight.
    • If you hit Mil while in a Mystery Room battle, likely due to using the Sage's Land Decimator (which attacks all units other than the caster, even neutral and allied units), he will step off of the Skip Gate and start attacking your units. And he'll likely be hundreds of levels higher than what your party has, murdering your entire party if you don't get to the Skip Gate right now.
    • One room is a bank. Talk to the teller and you'll rob a ton of cash from her. Talk to her again and this triggers a fight with security guards, i.e. monsters that are way more powerful than the source Item World's Proto Darkdeath!
  • Many of the scripted battle lines:
    • Metallia may occasionally say "You little shit!" Even funnier if it's in response to leveling up something or when you talk to her in the base.
    • "Quirky" Maids may occasionally meow when attacking, comment that "this meatnote  looks delicious!" and when hit will complain "My arms are falling off!" And then there's Yandere Maids, who think they're going on a date when they step onto the battlefield and regularly tell enemies to "only look at me!" or ask them to die for them. Or better yet, declare "I love you!"...right before going in for the kill.
    • Attacked Prinnies sometimes scream "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, dood!"
    • Fight Mistresses have a habit of saying "Die!" Even when they're going up or down steps or lifting and throwing their allies!
  • Nether News is good for some giggles:
    • One ticker message discusses an interview with someone of the Thief class, reporting that the interviewer, "for some odd reason," had a lighter wallet afterwards.
    • Another message details an attempt to interview a Slumber Cat. Unfortunately, the interviewee was too busy playing around and being adorable for an actual interview to take place.
    • A journalist says that he wants to get hit by a Fight Mistress. He ends up in the hospital after getting his wish. Either she Does Not Know Her Own Strength, or she was angry over being treated as a fetish.
    • A news story of Prinnies attempting to pass a Prinny Day bill ends with a Prinny tripping over and exploding, taking the rest of the Prinnies with him.
    • An interview with a Martial Artist got canceled because he couldn't summarize "400 million years of martial arts history."
    • An interview with a Sea Angel was canceled due to a "grotesque sight", and tells viewers to look up "buccal cones"note  for more information.
    • A report on a Chimera had some reporters wanting to experience a curse. They passed out, and the report ends by flatly stating, "Curses are real."
    • A report on a Rabbit has a reporter asking him what the secret is to harvesting delicious carrots, to which he simply answers "Love." The headline's response? "How unfortunate."
  • Every time Majorita is attacked, she growls "You piece of shit!" "Every time", as in if you attack her repeatedly, it quickly becomes "You piece of shit! You piece of shit! You piece of shit! You piece of shit!"
  • The fact that one of the thought bubbles that appears in cutscenes and on Innocents in the Innocent Farm is curry.
  • Most of the tutorials given by the NPCs in the Pocket Netherworld are straightforward and strictly informative. Then you get to the Interrogation Room...
Tutorial Name: Is This Really Okay?
    Master Interrogator: Yes.
