     Sugiura Kei

Huuh?! It sounds like you're talking, but all I hear is random noise!
A short, boyish girl who starts every day with a frown. Hangs out with Yokoe constantly, despite the two of them bickering with pretty much every line of dialogue.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: She spends the whole first chapter scoffing, rolling her eyes, and snapping at Yokoe, but she still gives a little smile when she sees they're in the same class. It's immediately followed by her turning to face Yokoe with the world's most exasperated expression.
  • Height Angst: Very insecure about the fact that she's only 151cm.
  • Hidden Buxom: She's easily mistaken for a boy...while she has a shirt on. Once it comes off, there's no mistaking she is very definitely female.
  • Lady Looks Like a Dude: Her introductory text reminds the reader she is—despite appearances—a girl.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Always sports a scowl. Then again, her best friend is Yokoe, so it's to be expected.
  • Tsundere: She's somewhat irritable and doesn't let on that she cares for Yokoe much- notice that she calls Yokoe by her last name while Yokoe calls Kei by her first name. Despite that, in Chapter 89, she admits that she likes it when Yokoe is herself, albeit while saying that it's "embarrassing" to have to say that out loud.

     Yokoe Rei

Yokoe Rei

Kei-chan, you... really love me, don't you?
A tall and gorgeous birdbrain. She's harbored a crush on Kei since middle school, but prefers teasing her to confessing her feelings.
  • Can't Tie His Tie: A rare female example. She's utterly hopeless at tying her tie, to the point of nearly strangling herself, so she needs Kei's help.
  • Custom Uniform: Her school uniform is a black button-up shirt with a gray tie, but Yokoe never wears the tie and leaves her collar unbuttoned. One chapter reveals she keeps the tie stuffed inside her pocket for emergencies.
  • The Ditz: Normally very dumb, but on occasion she'll slip into what the others call an "anaphylactic shock". She turns into a drooling idiot who wears box lids as a hat and praises the sun for shining on the wheat her cookies were made from.
  • The Gadfly: She prefers being a gadfly to being honest with Kei about her feelings. She almost confessed in middle school, but when she saw how uncomfortable it made Kei, she's been playing up the homoeroticism as a joke ever since.
  • Gayngst: Is in love with Kei, but Kei looked uncomfortable with the idea of homosexuality in middle school, so Yokoe's been bottling her feelings up ever since.
  • Not a Morning Person: The series begins with her in bed, her eyes snapping open as Kei mashes the doorbell. Kei's first line is complaining about her oversleeping again. When Yokoe finally drags her ass to the door, she convinces the put-upon Kei to give her five more minutes. Once Kei relents, Yokoe cheerily tacks on another five minutes with a sweet smile.

     Negoro Yatsude

Negoro Yatsude

...I'm shocked that two girls would put on such a sad display.
The stern, wry, sometimes mischievous third wheel to Kei and Rei's antics. She has her own subplot as president of the Film Studies Club.
  • Asleep in Class: According to her profile in vol. 5, she always sleeps in class yet she never gets caught — nobody can actually tell, because her eyes are always closed.
  • Eyes Always Shut: In keeping with her shrewd, reserved personality, and her penchant for teaching Yokoe tricks that piss Kei off.
  • Fangirl: Chapter 90 refers to her as a "pretty girl sommelier"note , because calling her an idol otaku is apparently too gauche. According to her profile in vol. 5, she regularly attends handshake events.
  • The Matchmaker: In her wry, peculiar way, she's often dispensing advice to Yokoe, Sugiura, and Tsubaki to help them work out their relationship issues.
  • Skinship Grope: She's not shy about coping a feel off Sugiura in the locker room, and offering a handful of her own in return.

     Fuji Matsuri

Fuji Matsuri

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fuji_1.png
This... This is how people stray from the righteous path... I'm going to turn myself in.
A classmate of Yatsude's who grapples with ethics and the philosophy of good deeds whilst engaged in the Sisyphean task of winning a stuffed animal from a crane game.
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: Fuji always looks like she's about to either pass out or pull out a knife and stab somebody. And according to chapter 64, it's not sleep deprivation—she's looked that way since she was a little girl.
  • Honor Before Reason: Even after sinking 80,000 yen into a crane game and losing every single time, Fuji staunchly refuses to accept the arcade clerk's offer to just give her the prize. Even when the clerk tries it herself, wins, and gives Fuji the stuffed rabbit, Fuji storms out the door while declaring that if she doesn't win it herself, it's meaningless. She pledges, "I will be back!"
  • I've Come Too Far: Fuji declares it on her umpteenth attempt to win a stuffed animal from a crane game, despite losing 80,000 yen so far.
  • Loser Protagonist: Although most of the characters are losers in one way or another, Fuji is a loser in the literal sense. She's blown all her money on a single crane game and got nothing, only for the clerk to give it a go and win on the first try. Despite her obvious lack of luck or talent, Fuji remains committed to winning the stuffed animal by herself.
  • Miko: Per the vol. 5 bio, she lives at a shrine and helps out.
  • Unknowingly in Love: Is too stupid to realize she's in love with Kishiya-san, despite Negoro repeatedly prompting her to recognize her feelings.

     Hinase Tsubaki

Hinase Tsubaki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hiiragis.jpeg
I should try not to get in their way... Why... Why am I always like this?
Yatsude's kouhai in the Film Studies Club. A shy, quiet, nervous girl in class, and a pathetic sis-connote  at home.
  • Covert Pervert: Apparently, she keeps voyeur photos of her own sister in her wallet.
  • Cute Bookworm: Tsubaki is described by others as being very pretty, and when Tsubaki had an awkward day out with Hinako her first suggestion for what to do was going to the library. When the gyaru Hinako was mortified at the idea, Tsubaki then brought up going to the bookstore.
  • The Ingenue: Subverted. She appears this way to Yatsude and Kaname, but at home she makes awkward, uncomfortable attempts to seduce her own sister that end with her (Tsubaki) in tears from her sister's savage verbal beatdowns.
  • No Social Skills: Riddled with anxiety and low self-esteem.
  • Twincest: Is hoping it'll happen, but since her sister hates her, it's not likely. When her sister cornered her and announced that school may suck, but at least she doesn't have to be around Tsubaki, Tsubaki was just hot and bothered she got a kabedon.

     Yamashiro Kaname

Yamashiro Kaname

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaname_2.png
Do something funny, Piyoko. If you don't, you'll owe me 10,000 yen.
A classmate of Tsubaki who takes a liking to her. A Gyaru Girl who enthusiastically toys with people for her own amusement.
  • Cute and Psycho: Directly from the author in Kaname's vol. 5 profile:
Ningiyau: A while ago I bought a book about psychopaths for future reference and it had a lot of things to say about Kaname-chan.
  • The Gadfly: Never met a situation she can't throw a monkey wrench into.
  • Genki Girl: Always excitable, never containable. She beams with a smile and drapes herself over Kaname, and takes a shine to Tsubaki just because she's cute.
  • The Matchmaker: Even though she acts like a troll, her actions end up pushing Tsubaki and Hinako closer together. Whether it's intentional is—like so many things with the flighty Kaname—ambiguous to the extreme.
  • Minor Living Alone: Her profile in vol. 5 states her parents work overseas, so she has the apartment all to herself.
  • Not a Morning Person: In chapters 70-72, she set up a get together with her, Hinako, and Tsubaki. She never showed up, forcing Hinako and Tsubaki to spend the day together. It occasionally cut back to Kaname dozing in bed. According to Tsubaki's inner monologue, Kaname is famous for oversleeping.
  • Token Minority: Inverted. Despite being a character in a yuri manga, her vol. 5 bio states one of her likes is "hot guys", making her the Token Straight.

     Nakatani "Piyoko" Hinako

Nakatani "Piyoko" Hinako

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hinako_4.png
That's going to overlap with mine.
A classmate of Tsubaki and friend to Kaname.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Per the author's profile in vol. 5, once Hinako gloms onto somebody she "monopolizes" them to the point she becomes bothersome.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Initially can't stand Tsubaki, but thanks to Kaname's eccentricities they end up becoming sort-of friends.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Liable to explode at the drop of a hat whenever she's frustrated.
  • Gyaru Girl: Forms a little gyaru posse with Kaname.

Ritsuryou East Girls High School

     Hinase Hiiragi

Hinase Hiiragi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hiiragis_8.jpeg
Hey you! I can see you! How far are you planning to follow me!? Are you a stalker!?
Tsubaki's sullen, short-tempered twin sister.
  • Gamer Girl: Usually seen lounging about her slovenly room with a PSP.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Liable to explode like a stick of dynamite at the first sign of discomfort.
  • No Social Skills: Doesn't get along with her classmates because of how brusque and angry she is.
  • Successful Sibling Syndrome: She developed self-esteem issues because of unfavorable comparisons to Tsubaki. She went to a different school to create an identity for herself, but the attitude she took with her doesn't make her any more popular.

     Utsugi Ren

Utsugi Ren

You don't mind, do you? Alright, it's decided!
A bubbly, dimwitted space case who will stop at nothing to befriend Hiiragi.
  • Animal Motif: She's excitable and energetic, ties her bangs up so they look like floppy rabbit ears, has a surname that sounds like rabbit in Japanese, and sometimes wears a shirt with a smiling bunny and the text "Happy Usa" on it.
  • Custom Uniform: Doesn't wear the vest or tie that are part of her uniform, and always has her dress shirt unbuttoned to expose her T-shirt. She looks more like a grade schooler in street clothes than a high school student.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Implied. A picture of her from the past shows she wasn't always so energetic and cheerful; she gives the camera a dead, glassy stare and a pursed frown, totally at odds with her current behavior.
  • The Ditz: Acts like she's half her age.
  • New Transfer Student: She transferred to Hiiragi's school mid-semester, and took a shine to Hiiragi on her first day. May also count a mysterious transfer student—chapter 56 ends with her portrait in her medical file, and she looks like a complete Broken Bird, prompting the question of why she transferred schools in the first place.

     Akutami Nagi

Akutami Nagi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akutami.png
Oh damn. Today was trash day.
The school nurse, and the focus of Hiiragi's misplaced affection.
  • Apathetic Teacher: Her patience has been worn thin by Hiiragi feigning injuries to get out of class and hang out in the infirmary. She also smokes cigarettes on the balcony outside the infirmary, insinuating she doesn't care that much about staying healthy.
  • Lady Looks Like a Dude: Often gets confused for a man, per her vol. 5 bio.

     Sakaki Kyouka

Sakaki Kyouka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sakiki.png
In order to live together in a community, rules are indispensable!
The student council president.
  • Moral Guardians: Dedicated to restoring public morals by rigorously enforcing the dress code (which Utsugi flagrantly violates).

Seiren Academy

    Kishiya Yuka

Kishiya Yuka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kishiya.png
Who'd have thought I'd do it on my first try? Must be my lucky day!
A young woman who works at the game center Fuji frequents.
  • Apathetic Clerk: Inwardly, yes. But she puts on a fake smile and does the job, deluding Fuji into thinking she's a paragon of virtue.
  • First-Name Basis: While trying to remember Fuji's first name, she blurts it out, causing Fuji to address her by her first name as well.
  • Instant Fan Club: Shs's so pretty that adoring high school girls fawn over her.
  • Younger Than They Look: Despite holding a job and acting far more mature than Fuji, she's only a first year high school student.
  • Soul-Sucking Retail Job: Absolutely hates working in a game center.

    Kyoumoto Akane

Kyoumoto Akane

Yuka-chan, that's just 'cause you're such a people pleaser.
A stoic girl who attends Seiren Academy alongside Yuka.
  • Emotionless Girl: In her vol. 5 profile, Ningiyau states conversations with her resemble talking to Siri.
  • Ironic Name: Her name, Akane, means "deep red", and yet she is the quintessential Blue Oni.
  • The Stoic: Doesn't talk much and projects the appearance of a cool beauty.
