YMMV / School Zone Girls

Go To

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: In the vol. 5 extras, Ningiyau expresses befuddlement at how much fans fawn over Yatsude.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • In chapter 16, Kei and Yokoe have a Held Gaze in the middle of class. When Yokoe teases Kei about falling in love from it, Kei deletes her contact info and blocks her number out of sheer frustration at Rei constantly being The Gadfly. Later, in chapter 49, it's revealed that Yokoe is actually in love with Kei, but plays up the homoeroticism as a joke precisely so Kei doesn't figure out her true feelings and distance herself from Yokoe for real.
    • Chapter 90 is about Yatsude freaking out after hearing the news that her favorite idol has suddenly cancelled all her appearance and withdrawn from the public eye with little warning. Nine chapters later, fans of the manga would get a taste of that when it was abruptly placed on indefinite hiatus.
  • Heartwarming Moments: In Chapter 89, Yokoe asks if Kei didn't enjoy their trip to the festival. In a rare moment of honesty, Kei admits that she likes spending time with Yokoe, and that the reason she wasn't having fun was because Yokoe didn't seem like she was enjoying herself.
  • Memetic Mutation: "Facial Harvard".note
  • Misaimed Marketing: Initially, School Zone was marketed as a yuri title, despite having little-to-no actual yuri. Because of that, people who picked the book up expecting a full-on gay lovefest were inevitably left disappointed (see the middling Goodreads reviews) when it turned out to be a Cringe Comedy about two stupid girls, one of whom was very slightly hinted to have a crush on the other. For vol. 2, the author's notes stated it felt "a little more" like a yuri manga — perhaps in response to the criticism — but even though later chapters have corrected this somewhat and brought in more overt yuri elements, the pace is still glacial, leading the comments section for every release chapter to cry out "Is this really a yuri?!" and to declare "This is a yuri! There's progress!" over the slightest development. This also leads to disagreements over whether the series is mainly a yuri with some comedy on the side, or mainly a comedy with some yuri on the side. The author him/herself admitted they had no plan for the series at first, which probably contributed to its aimlessness and inability to decide what genre it wants to be.
  • Ugly Cute: Whenever Tsubaki is terrified, she sort of melts into a moe blob of the highest degree. Her eyes swell to double the size with a half-dozen watery highlights each, her mouth becomes a ragged quivering oval that slides up between her eyes, and sweat pours from every pore on her face. Her reaction to Yokoe in chapter 66 may just be the most grotesque version of Inelegant Blubbering ever committed to print. It has to be seen to be believed.
