Voiced by: Makio Inoue (Japanese), François Lescurat (French), Massimo Rossi (Italian), Benny Haag (Swedish), Péter Szokol (Hungarian), Jeorge Nicolini (Latin American Spanish)

The main character. He is a child of the Big Horn Tribe, but they disowned him for his white skin, which is considered a curse. He was raised by an ape named Kitty until she was killed by Tyranno. His aim is to kill Tyranno, avenge Kitty and reunite with his mother.

  • Curse: When Ryu was born, he had pale, white skin. The tribe deemed it as a bad omen, and despite his mother's cries, he was ordered to be put to death. He survived, but life still hasn't been easy for him as it's still a source of marginalization throughout the series.
  • Damsel in Distress: Ryu is constantly attacked for his white skin. When he was born, his fellow tribesmen tried to feed him to a dinosaur, and even as an adult he has to suffer through an entire tribe trying to murder him, Goro trying to feed him to a dinosaur (again) and many, many other hardships.
  • Disappeared Dad: We know who his mother is, but we never get any word on who his dad is.
  • Devious Daggers: One of his weapons is a blunt knife, which he uses to kill Tyranno.
  • Dub Name Change: He became Nolan in the French dub.
  • Handsome Heroic Caveman: Ryu is very good looking, has a nice figure and a heart of gold. He's a jungle boy since he was raised by an ape, but also has a noble sense of justice and helps the villagers he meets while expecting nothing in return.
  • The Hero: Despite what he's suffered, Ryu has a heroic spirit and readily puts his life in danger for others. When he heard that Goro imprisoned Ben, he volunteered to rescue him, and also protects his fellow humans from wild animals.
  • I Let Gwen Stacy Die: After Tyranno injured Kitty, he begged Ran for herbs to treat her. He did receive them, but by then it was too late to save her.
  • No-One Could Have Survived That: The tribe he was born to believed Ryu to be dead, but he was secretly taken to safety by Kitty.
  • Parental Abandonment: His mother was forced to abandon him because the Big Horn Tribe viewed white skin as a bad omen.
  • Raised by Wolves: He was raised by an ape, Kitty. She was a good mother to him and upon her death, became a broken man filled with rage.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: He has pale skin and dark, black hair.
  • Token White: He is the only pale-skinned member of the cast. Though if his name and features are anything to go by, he's likely Japanese.

Ryu's friend, who wants to help him find his mother.

  • Beauty Equals Goodness: She's a very beautiful woman with a stunning figure and striking eyes. She's also just as heroic as him and helps him protect their fellow humans from the dangers of their Death World, be it from humans or animals.
  • Cool Big Sis: Don wants to be just like her.
  • Dub-Induced Plotline Change: In the Polish dub Ran is Ryu's girlfriend, even though in the original Japanese version there was no romance between them.
  • Flowers of Femininity: Ran dons a red flower in her hair, and her specialty is working with herbs.
  • Human Resources: When Ran was young, her tribe, the Menam tribe, sold her to the Big Horn tribe in exchange for some fire. She has been working as a medic for them ever since.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: She's sweet and easygoing, befriending Ryu and refusing to hate him over his skin colour.
  • Lady in Red: She wears a red dress and also has red hair decorations.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: Ran's hair is pinkish-red and goes near her thighs. She also wears a flower in her hair.
  • The Medic: She works for the Big Horn tribe as a medic, often gathering herbs to treat wounded warriors.
  • Miss Fanservice: We get to see her frontal nudity at one point, her nipples hidden by her Godiva Hair.
  • Red Is Heroic: She wears a lot of red and even her hair is a reddish colour. She's a medic as well as a combatant.

Voiced by: Yoshiko Ōta (Japanese), Marie-Christine Robert (French), Fabio Boccanera (Italian), Anita Wall (Swedish), Unknown (Hungarian), Unknown (Latin American Spanish)

Ran's little brother.

  • Bratty Half-Pint: He was overjoyed to be reunited with Ran (after she had been sold) and doesn't want to leave her ever. He's often bratty and needy towards Ran, but it's because he doesn't want to lose her again.
  • Tagalong Kid: He's the youngest, but always wants to join Ran and Ryu's adventures. He also views Ran as a Cool Big Sis.

    Kiba

Voiced by: Goro Naya (Japanese), Jean-Pierre Malardé (French), Unknown (Italian), Tomas Bolme (Swedish), Vizy György (Hungarian), Unknown (Latin American Spanish)

The former chief of the Badger Tribe. His entire race was driven to extinction by Tyranno.

  • Cain and Abel: Taka is bloodthirsty and wants to murder Ryu to satisfy his desire for Revenge, while Kiba is kindly and gentle, being the Team Dad to Ryu, Ran and Don.
  • Cool Old Guy: His son, Kumao, wanted to be just like him and would often tell him news of his hunts. He's also the reason Tyranno has one eye - when he attacked his tribe, Kiba took out the other with his spear.
  • Team Dad: He's the only adult in Ryu's group, and looks after them like a parent.
  • Dub Name Change: He became Berättare in the Swedish dub.
  • Gentle Giant: In spite of how he looks, his paternal instincts kick in whenever he's around Ryu and the gang.
  • Handicapped Badass: Before the events of the story, he was bedridden from an accident, and his wife was his caretaker. Though he's abled when Ryu meets him.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Underneath that gruff exterior is a kind man who's a father figure to Ryu and his companions.
  • Killed Off for Real: Kiba dies fighting Tyranno before the Grand Finale, and is mourned by Ryu, Ran and Don dearly. However, Ryu states that his spirit is still alive, and he won't truly die until he's defeated Tyranno.
  • The Leader: Kiba was the chieftain of the Badger Tribe until Tyranno wiped them out.
  • The Lost Lenore: Tyranno killed his wife, Oname, and he mourns her every day.
  • Parental Substitute: He has a father-son like bond with Ryu, likely because he's experienced with having children. He views him as the son he never had. He's not racist to him like the other tribes, and teaches him how to fight.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Both Kiba and Taka have the same dark skin and eyes, with wild, scruffy hair.
  • You Killed My Father: When Tyranno attacked, Kiba tried to usher his wife and little son to safety - only for Tyranno to kill them both.

  • Damsel in Distress: In the Grand Finale, she's held hostage by Taka and his men to lure out Ryu, while they plan to attack him.
  • Determinator: Esta will do whatever she can to reunite with her son.
  • Good Parents: Esta did whatever she could tp protect Ryu, but sadly it wasn't enough. She still loved him very much and tried her best to reunite with him.
  • Hope Spot: She believed Ryu was still alive as there was no blood or a body left at the arena where he was ordered to die. She's right.
  • Searching for the Lost Relative: She has hope her son is alive, and refused to believe Majara when he told her he was likely dead.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Averted as she looks nothing like her son. However, she kept having dreams of him as an adult and recognized him instantly when he came looking for her.

    Tyranno
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tyranno.png

The main villain.

  • Big Bad: Tyranno is a sociopathic beast that views everyone else as mere food. He is merciless in who he attacks, and even derives pleasure out of it. Ryu desires to kill him as Revenge for killing his adoptive mother, the ape Kitty, and many characters have lost a loved one (or many) to him.
  • A Dog Named "Perro": His name is derived from "Tyrannosaurus Rex, which itself is derived from the Latin "Tyrannosaurus", (meaning "King").
  • Dies Wide Open: That's how his death looked like. For extra effect, Ryu stands on top of his corpse.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • Swedish — Chirano.
    • Finnish — Girano/Kerano.
    • Hungarian — Siránó. However after episode 4, everyone began calling him Tirannusz for some reason, and no one bothered to bring up that his name for the first 3 episides was something different.
    • Italian — Tirano.
  • The Dreaded: Tyranno has been murdering and eating humans for as long as he can. Many humans have horrible tales to tell of him, and his drive for eating humans is so well-known, the Big Horn Tribe try to use it to finish off a baby Ryu.
  • Fat Bastard: He's a bit on the tubby side, which looks comical despite the fact that he's a Terrifying Tyrannosaur.
  • Terrifying Tyrannosaur: Tyranno lives for violence, and kills and kills to satisfy his appetite. He killed Ryu's mother, Kiba's tribe and almost all of the Big Horn Tribe, and still strives to kill more.

    Taka
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/taka.jpg

Voiced by: Ichirō Murakoshi (Japanese), Unknown (French), Renzo Stacchi (Italian), Stig Engström (Swedish), Unknown (Hungarian), Unknown (Latin American Spanish)

The final villain of the series who stands between Ryu reuniting with his mother. He is Kiba's brother.

  • Arch-Enemy: Ryu, who he wants to eliminate at all costs. Even after Ryu completes the trials he set for him and tries to make peace with him, Taka refuses to give up and also threatens the life of Esta for her relation to him.
  • Cain and Abel: While Kiba is a kindly father figure to Ryu, his brother Taka is a violent psychopath who wants to kill him for his skin colour.
  • Happily Adopted: When Taka was a child, the Badger tribe were facing a food and water crisis and turned to the Orgone tribe for help. The Orgone tribe agreed to supply them with food and water, but because the Chieftain and his wife couldnt have children of their own, they requested something in exchange - one of the Badger Chieftain's two children. The Badger Tribe agreed and gave up Taka, raising him as one of their own while Kiba remained with them.
  • Freudian Excuse: Taka hates people with white skin because his tribe, the Orgone was wiped out by the Whiteskin people. He hates Ryu for his pale complexion even though Ryu isn't a part of them.
  • May–December Romance: Majara implies he has eyes for Ran and is jealous of Ryu because he's close to her. Given how he's around Kiba's age and Ran appears to be a teenager, uh...
  • Red Is Violent: His clothing is primarily red, and he's a the archetypical club-holding, hot-tempered rage-filled caveman.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He has a strong resemblance to Kiba, particularly his facial features and hair.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He's not above assaulting Esta to shock Ryu.
  • You Killed My Father: The Whiteskins massacred his adoptive parents in front of him when he was an infant.
