  • Action Survivor: He's not the best competitor or strategist, but he's managed to build up a decent enough social game to the point where he went from being the most hated and targeted houseguest at the start to becoming someone who has plenty of allies.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Christmas likes to call him "Juju", as does Raven.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: Paul and Josh were both "bad guys" or villains this season with Paul being the Big Bad and Josh being The Dragon to Paul. However, Josh is significantly more moral and less villainous than Paul. Josh was not as conniving, scheming, backstabbing and manipulative as Paul was and he didn't play as dirty or aggressive of a game despite some of his crazy antics and bullying. Because of this, the majority of the jury (five of them to be exact) felt that Josh was the lesser of two evils between him and Paul and they therefore chose to vote for him to win over Paul in the Final 2.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Josh was constantly ostracized and picked on by the other houseguests in the beginning. Nobody wanted to interact with him or align with him because they found him way too unpredictable, immature and emotional. Josh was often the hot topic for trash talking amongst the houseguests. It was easy to feel sympathetic towards Josh since he was pretty much all alone in the house and he was having emotional breakdowns over finding the game overwhelming and not being accepted by anyone. However, this is later subverted, as Josh does end up becoming friends with many houseguests and gains loyal allies in Paul, Christmas, Jason, and Alex.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Plays this role to the rest of the houseguests, especially Mark, considering that he's become the second youngest houseguest after Raven and after Ramses is evicted. Josh's relationship with Mark is very big brother-little brother with Mark playing the big brother role and Josh playing the little brother role. At the start of the game, Mark had a strong Big Brother Instinct and Big Brother Mentor relationship with Josh, frequently going out of his way to be there for an overly emotional and impulsive Josh so that he could give him personal advice. Mark has commented that he sees Josh as a younger brother that is quite an annoyance and nuisance to him because of Josh's erratic personality, actions and behavior. However, Mark does also see Josh as someone he has to look out for and keep in line when he gets too out of control, emotional, impulsive and crazy.
  • Anti-Villain:
    • He's technically on the villainous side as he's The Dragon for the Big Bad Paul but he's not a completely bad person.
    • Josh is a Type I Noble Demon because although he does have some traits that would make him come across as a villain, he's still rather noble and good-hearted deep down. There are times when Josh will back down from antagonizing others and he doesn't always like to entertain the idea of hurting other people through mean-spirited words or actions. Sometimes a Morality Pet, such as Christmas and Paul, will stop Josh from going over the edge and will help to bring out his moral and noble side.
    • He's a Type II Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds because even though he has villainous traits, much of his behaviour can be considered justified due to the fact that he has been mistreated and bullied by some of the other houseguests. Often, when Josh is fighting with someone else, it's normally because Josh is only trying to stand up for himself. Therefore, it can be easy to sympathize with Josh at times because of the way that he has been treated and ostracized by the other houseguests, in particular Cody and Jessica.
  • Arch-Enemy: To Megan, Cody, Jessica, Mark, and arguably, Elena. As well as pretty much anyone he feels has wronged him (which is a constantly-growing list), like Kevin. Even the coffeepot.
  • Ascended Fanboy: Josh has watched Big Brother since he was 14, ergo, he's been dedicatedly viewing the show since 2008, meaning he's seen every season from 9 upwards. His big win cemented him as this. Funnily enough, the season right before he started watching was the one where Dick Donato used a pot lid and stirrer to torment the house, meaning Josh may have been inspired by another source to use his "jacksaphone" shtick. At the post-game party, Will Kirby told him this was a tradition going back to Survivor which he had seen being used to wake up the camp. And now, after Will went around claiming some of the houseguests could be cast in soap operas, Josh actually got cast in The Bold and the Beautiful. And his role happened to be as Chef Josh... SERVING MEATBALLS!!
  • A Sinister Clue: Josh is left handed and he's also The Dragon for the Big Bad Paul, and later takes on the role of The Starscream.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: Thanks to Paul, he became a Karma Houdini the week he was slated to go home. During the Week 7 HOH, where he's the host while Julie speaks, he's dressed as a magician. Josh the meatball magician! Makes a meatball come out of a hat!
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Once Josh lets loose with the banging of pots and pans, he continues to keep going and going until it just annoys those he's trying to taunt with them, especially Mark, Cody and Jessica. Josh also has a habit of escalating arguments to the point where he comes across as The Bully. Other people often have to step in in order to stop Josh from going on the constant attack or offence against the other houseguests. He stops using this taunt after doing it so much he actually broke the pan... and after he learns he accidentally hit and injured Raven, who prevented him from hitting Alex by accident.
  • Attention Whore: Josh seems to like being the centre of attention and he will do anything to achieve that, even if he ends up looking outrageous and foolish. He shares that trait with Paul.
  • Badass Boast: Definitely has huge balls when it comes to calling out other houseguests on their BS.
  • Badasses Wear Bandanas: Josh likes to look gangsta, and it's very common to see him wear a colorful bandana like a headband around his head. It's usually either red or gray, or sometimes blue. He seems to have given Theodore the owl his red one at the endgame.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: In his goodbye message to Matt when Matt gets evicted, he makes it sound like he's going to say his predictable "meatball" catchphrase, telling Matt he's a big bowl of... cereal!
  • Bald of Evil: Downplayed. Josh is not completely bald as he does visibly have hair. However, his hair is so short and close cropped and it's most likely that he does shave it in order to keep it very short.
  • Banging Pots and Pans: Josh's signature tactic, and the biggest source of annoyance/funniness in the entire season, which he was inspired to use from birthday celebrations at home where he went crazy and banged pots and pans around. You make him mad, he grabs a pair of pots and pans (or a skillet), starts slamming them together and leaping up and down, jumping onto the furniture, bellowing taunts and circus music, and even chasing his targets throughout the house; it started when he wanted to get back at Mark for making him miserable and Josh continued going back to this taunt without respite under the guidance of Paul and his desire to use the pots and pans on Jody. Bobby Moynihan actually came into the house imitating him after watching the season play out. Will Kirby joked he might get a sponsorship deal after the season ended. Heck, he was gifted a pair on The Talk, one with his profile on it from the game and another with the logo of the talk show, and instructed to only use them for good.
  • Catchphrase: "Meatball". He constantly used this word to describe people on his bad side. It would become his BB Comics alter-ego, but he was annoyed that his insult had been misinterpreted. Josh later confided that he called people meatballs because he didn't want to come off as an extreme bully.
  • Companion Cube: This season's version of the house had a stuffed owl that Josh loved to talk to. He even named it Orwell, and as a result, it became a returning mascot every season afterward. There was also another owl that Josh put one of his bandanas on to distinguish him from Orwell, Theodore. Josh also befriended the pool swan and named her Delilah.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: A particularly notable example. He played the role of an unchained loudmouth who annoyed people to the last nerve, but he had a very clever strategy of using his goodbye messages to rat out Paul as the one betraying the house while Josh was a straight shooter.
  • Hated by All: At first. Originally, Josh was rather hated by pretty much everyone in the house. They found him to be extremely annoying and overly emotional. They also didn't like how he was overly confrontational and argumentative, constantly trying to start fights with the other houseguests. Others, like Kevin, felt that Josh was extremely immature because of his age. However, as the weeks pass, he gathers some allies, such as Paul, Alex, Jason, Kevin, and Christmas and the rest of the house, with the exception of Cody and Jessica, tolerate him at best. However, his funny antics outside of his temper tantrums are quite beloved in of themselves. What ended his disapproval rating was when he won HOH and Cody threatened to destroy him outside of the house and come after him in real life, and that got everybody on his side and began the downfall of Cody and Jessica.
  • Loved by All: By the end of the game, the house has realized that Josh was an emotional monster at times, but he always played with his heart, which ultimately won him Alex's vote and even CODY'S vote (Cody at the very least appreciated his honesty). Christmas in particular was very proud of him for doing this and learning to play for himself now that she knew she would place third and couldn't/wouldn't tell him what to do anymore (she, unlike Paul, didn't want him to be subservient forever).
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Josh loves to eat at Chipotle.

Jury Votes Received: 4/9 Votes (MATT, RAVEN, KEVIN, CHRISTMAS)

  • And There Was Much Rejoicing: From the viewers when Paul loses.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Doesn't even realize anyone could defeat them until seconds before it happens.
  • Berserk Button: Don't even think of betraying him or crossing him in any way.
  • Brains and Brawn: Paul is the Brains to Josh's brawn. Unfortunately Josh has a wee bit more brain than Paul accounted for.
  • Breakout Character: He came back and got a little help from America to survive his first week. This proved not to be a very good thing, all things considered. Paul quickly had a fall from grace by playing puppet master over practically the entire house and demonstrated a highly toxic influence. With this shocking change from the once respectable underdog, Paul became the heel of the season whom fans went from backing to resenting.
  • The Bully: To put a very long essay short, Paul is quite a disturbing person given too much control.
  • Catchphrase: Paul has quite a lot of them this season, mainly "You just played yourself!"
  • The Chessmaster: They're certainly good at playing everyone. By the end of the game, only Josh is onto them.
  • Deus ex Machina: The Pendant of Protection utterly saves them from being evicted immediately.
  • Didn't See That Coming: They're clearly shocked to see Josh expose them in the Goodbye messages.
  • Genre Blind: Let's take a quick look at their jury management.
    • Votes out Cody after Jessica, despite the latter hating Josh more, and the former being able to withstand his antics better.
    • Is directly behind the house's nastier moments, never realizing anyone might put 2 and 2 together.
    • Lies to the jury, who've had time to compare notes by this point
    • Votes out the people most universally hated by the houseguests (Raven and Raven) in favor of setting Josh up to be the mean one.
  • Hated by All: Finishing off the long list of houseguests to receive this reception is the one that started it all this season. Coming into the game, Paul was the favorite and received a twist that saved them from being evicted week one. However, things rapidly went south when they managed to seize control as a result of the Pendant protecting them, perhaps longer than it should have. As more and more of their opponents went out and Paul became more powerful, their toxicity began to reach absurd levels. They brought out the worst in everyone and became Drunk with Power with none of the redeeming qualities that made them so popular last season. Things got so bad, that Cody, who would normally be the most hated houseguest in any season, became one of the most beloved for not bending to their will, not trying to play to the cameras like Paul (and others), and being victimized along with his girlfriend by Paul. Come the final 3, everyone brought up the pendant as power as "proof" that the game was rigged for them (a dubious claim) and dreaded their seemingly inevitable victory, only to be surprised to find that not the case.
  • He Cleans Up Nicely: When Paul shows a picture of themself clean-shaven, they look pretty handsome.
  • Oh, Crap!: Once Paul realizes Cody is the deciding vote in a 4-5 vote, they suddenly start to panic.
    Paul: "Not again... Not again..."
  • Playing Both Sides: Every single person once Mark is gone thinks Paul is their final 2. This bites Paul in the ass when two of those people catch on...
  • Reality Show Genre Blindness: Despite having complete power in the house, they managed to put the wrong people on the jury and practically cost himself the game.
  • The Smart Guy: Manages to bend the house to their whims, almost to a disturbing level. At the very least they're the smartest one in the house with one possible meatball exception.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Once they realize Cody is the deciding vote in a 4-5 vote, they suddenly start to panic.
    Paul: "Not again... Not again..."
  • Wild Hair: Their mohawk. A relatively vertically close-cropped, but somewhat bushy one.
  • You Are Already Dead: Voting out Raven was perhaps the final nail in their game when you look back at it. Christmas was the only person they could realistically defeat, and she wasn't winning final HOH, nor was Paul taking her past it.
