Five years ago, we had this thread, which died out. It gathered more wicks/inbounds since then.

However, there's a problem: It's basically a list of times a puffer fish appears. Some overlap with other tropes (for example, Spikes of Doom), while some have no context, mainly boiling down to "they exist".

I propose that this be cut if we cannot find a better place to put this.

Edit: Here's a tally of the examples on the page, sorted in folders:

    "This exists"/"This is mentioned"/ZCE

    Served as a dish
  • The Columbo episode ''Murder Under Glass" centers around the killer- a trained chef- using blowfish poison to kill a victim. Columbo is tipped off to the exact poison and method later in the film when the killer is serving fugu sashimi and is revealed to be licensed and trained to prepare the fish.
  • Bug Martini shows an office worker trying to sneak a bite of a puffer fish sandwich in a comic stating that they'd be extremely easy to poison.
  • Duck Dodgers: in the episode "Samurai Quack", it goes one step further that he doesn't eat poorly prepared sushi....he takes a big bite out a whole and totally unprepared Blowfish after slapping it for a bit Mushroom Samba.
  • The Simpsons: Homer Simpson's one and only exposure to sushi ended with a cut of fugu (pufferfish) prepared by an apprentice sushi chef. Dr. Hibbert said he would die in 24 hours, but judging from him surviving in the end it apparently wasn't as ill-prepared as they thought.
  • In one episode of James Bond Jr., one of the goons working for the episode's villain is also a sushi chef. James notes that the chef is preparing a cut of blowfish (fugu), mentioning that it's lethal if not cut just right. James overpowers the chef and makes a quick cut of fugu, then threatens to make him eat it unless he talks. After the chef reveals what he knows, James promptly eats the fugu himself, revealing that fugu preparation is yet another one of his many talents.

    Puff up with certain moods
  • Skyes, the manager of the Whale Wash from Shark Tale was a puffer fish that blew up when scared.
  • On Star Trek: Enterprise, Dr. Phlox's species have a reflexive ability to inflate their heads when threatened, in a manner similar to a puffer fish expanding its body. It only gets used the once, and while his assailant was certainly surprised, a fellow sentient with a gun is less easily deterred than a predator...

    Exploding puffers/used as weapons
  • In Discworld, the Bloat blowfish is ridiculously poisonous, making it a favorite weapon of some professional assassins. - its "puffing" mechanism seems to be chemically based so if you get stabbed by something covered with its poison (or eat one - unless prepared by an expert), you will... puff. They say after blowfish poison is used, you don't need to remove the body, merely repaint the room. And, of course, it's also a popular Agatean dish - although Nanny Ogg's Cookbook claims that the recipe involves disposing of the blowfish as thoroughly as possible (an incinerator is a good idea, if the wind isn't blowing towards people you like), and making something else. (But if you just don't bother having a blowfish, you aren't doing it right.)
  • Puffer fish mecha also appear in Mega Man Zero 4. They explode into spikes if left long enough.
  • A Mook in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is a pufferfish that can float in water and in air. And if it's knocked into a wall, it explodes.
  • Uncle uses one in Jackie Chan Adventures in order to cast spells.

    Spikes Of Doom/misc. hazards

Kill it and use its corpse to make some sushi.

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?

I think "Popped Puffer Fish" (which would include the other kind of blowing up) is an unique, improbable enough attribute to warrant its own trope, to anyone interested. The concept not being limited to puffer fish.

Puffer Fish on its own, +1 to cut.

It has more inbounds than I expected - 270. Is that enough to save it?

If we rename the trope and focus on their improbable aspects (Stuff Blowing Up, Balloonacy, Spike Shooter) like I proposed, it might be worth fixing.

Should we have a catch-all cleanup for tropes that are essentially "This animal exists" akin to the Appearance Clean-Up Thread?

[tup] to cut. Only hesitation would be if this would make a good useful notes?

Having a dedicated animal trope cleanup thread's a good idea.

Without reading the trope, exactly one of those uses is tropable: Served as a dish and mentioned to be dangerous/potentially poisonous. Narrow the trope to that. The rest of the uses don't sound tropable to be.

A fish that puffs up is a rare visual gag, but that is by no means limited to puffers. The rest are not even close to being tropable.

After reading the trope: That description needs to go. That's not a trope, that's a useful note. Someone over in the exotic species fanclub is free to create a pufferfish useful notes page afterwards.

I want to replace this with an actual trope: Poisonous Puffer Fish.

I don't see "potentially poisonous animal dish" being at all specific to puffer fish. +1 to cut; any new ideas should go to YKTTW.

Also support the idea for a dedicated "Animal Tropes Repair thread".

You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"

Okay, seeing as any tropes related to puffer fish should end up with different trope names and the description matches none of them, there is no reason not to cut.

I don't think there is any restriction preventing anyone from actually creating an animal tropes cleanup thread if they want to.
