Basara Tojo is a high school student whose father has suddenly just remarried. His father then departs overseas leaving Basara with two new beautiful step-sisters. Little does he know, his new sisters, Mio and Maria are actually the new Demon Lord and a succubus!? Almost trapped into a life of servitude, Basara forms a reverse contract by accident and ends up becoming Mio’s master! Hilarity Ensues as Basara finds himself in one ecchi situation after another. However, Mio’s life is in danger as she is pursued by demons and heroes!

The Testament of Sister New Devil is a Light Novel series written by Tetsuto Uetsu and illustrated by Nekosuke Okuma. It received an anime adaptation from Production IMS in January 2015, with the second season, BURST, following in October.

The light novels began publication under the Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko imprint in 2012, and initially ran until 2018 for 12 volumes; a thirteenth volume was released in 2021 as the Grand Finale of the series. A compilation movie as well as a third OVA titled The Testament of Sister New Devil Departures were both released the same year. It also spawned a manga adaptation illustrated by Kashiwa Miyako, which was serialized in Shonen Ace from 2013 to 2017 and compiled into nine volumes. A spinoff manga adaptation, The Testament of Sister New Devil: Storm! was illustrated by Fumihiro Kiso and was serialized in Young Animal Arashi from 2014 to 2016, compiled into five volumes. Departures was also the final work produced by Production IMS, which closed in October 2018.

The series was dubbed into English and released on home video by Crunchyroll.

The Testament of Sister New Devil provides examples of:

• Above the Influence:
  • Basara sticks to this pretty well at first, though Maria and (later) Yuki don't make it easy.
  • Partially averted due to the potentially lethal consequences of not following through on the Master-Servant pact.
  • Completely averted at the conclusion of Volume 7, where he most certainly isn't anymore... Cue squeeing from his entire harem.
• Action Girl: Every member of Basara's harem is a fairly competent fighter. However, Mio isn't as good due to only having learned about her powers within the last few months, compared to the years of training Kurumi, Maria, and Yuki had, or Zest being literally engineered for magical combat.
• Adaptation Expansion: Despite all the explanation extraction, the anime does add unique content, even without the OVA. For example, the fight with Zolgia's castle Kaiju doesn't exist in the original light novel.
• Adaptational Modesty: The light novel devotes entire chapters to everything-but-sex scenes between Basara and the various members of his harem. However, the anime's scenes had to be edited down likely due to concerns that it would get the anime slapped with an R18+ rating; as such, the AT-X broadcast and Blu-ray releases are rated R15+.
• Adaptation Explanation Extrication: The original light novels explain things that are left out in the anime and manga such as:
  • Mio and some other characters can't have sex without risking a permanent loss of their powers.
  • Kurumi learns how to channel dark energy via harvesting sexual energy while in the demon realm, meaning she can increase her power by having not-sex with Basara as well.
• Alien Sky: The Demon world's night sky has at least two moons.
• All for Nothing: Ramsus's plan to extract Mio's powers becomes pointless when the latter decides to live her life as a human and not succeed her father. Before that, Mio's father secrets her away among humans so she wouldn't be a pawn for the demons, but his death and having her inherit his powers renders all that void.
• All Just a Dream: Basara has one in episode 3, when Mio and Maria end up washing his back via rubbing it with Mio's breasts. Maria then brings a piece of cake into the bathroom, then licks the portion that hit Basara's arm after she drops it. Basara then says he doesn't care what happens anymore and grabs both girls, but then wakes up in his room. Maria says much of that happened, but some of it was him dreaming it, and teases him for having such a naughty dream.
• Almost Kiss: Both Mio and Yuki get ready to kiss Basara but then interrupt each other. Mio prepares to kiss Basara in episode 5 to be stopped by Yuki, and then Yuki prepares to kiss Basara in episode 9 to be stopped by Mio.
• A Million Is a Statistic: Some of the nobles belonging to the current demon lord's faction seem to view the attacks on their people by the demon god Chaos as this. They even view this as a Let No Crisis Go to Waste opportunity, figuring that they can always rebuild.
• Amusing Injuries: In the first episode, after their initial encounter in the bathroom, Basara has a red handprint on his face from where Mio slapped him.
• An Arm and a Leg: Let's just say character keeping their limbs attached in combat is a luxury.
• Animal Eye Spy: Of a sort. High level demons are shown, on several occasions, to be able to see and hear what their servants do. Some, like Zolgia, are even able to sense the thoughts and feelings of their strongest servants. Basara has yet to be shown being able to use this ability with Mio, Yuki, or Zest.
• Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever:
  • One shows up in episode 11. Said creature was actually the mansion Zolgia was using, and was insurance against anyone attempting to kill him, and thus release his seal on the creature.
  • A few show up in episode 5 of Burst, attacking the demon city that Mio and the others were staying at. Dozens more show up in episode 9 after an Eldritch Abomination is summoned by some of the nobles from the demon lord's faction. Unfortunately they attack everyone, not just the faction belonging to Mio's father.
• Babies Ever After: By the end of the series, all the girls in Basara's harem are with child; including Chisato.
• Bad Guys Do the Dirty Work: During the finale of Volume 7, Liala of all people saves the day when she decapitates the remaining members of the Demon Council, ending the threat to demonkind for good.
• Balanced Harem: None of the girls hold a significant lead over the others towards Basara. Both Yuki and Mio bicker with each other to prevent the other one from gaining the lead. Burst adds Kurumi and Zest, with Maria being even more of an enabler than before.
• Barbie Doll Anatomy: The opening uses this for Mio, Maria, and Yuki. Interestingly Basara is also shown this way as well. Averted in the OVA episodes and the Blu-Ray/DVD boxset, all female nipples are shown.
• Bathtub Bonding: Basara's going to need a bigger bathtub because all the girls in his harem have little, if any, reluctance in bathing with him, and some are downright insistent on it, even several at the same time, and they're not the only ones.
• Batman Gambit: Basara uses one in episode 10, by letting Lars bring him to Zolgia's mansion so he could track down Mio. He has Yuki follow nearby so she could detect him after he disabled Zolgia's magical barrier preventing them from using the Master-Servant tracking pact.
• Be as Unhelpful as Possible: After Yuki and Mio start a fight when the former kissed Basara at the end of volume 3, Basara tries to have Maria intervene. When faced with the prospect of taking Yuki or Mio's side, Maria kisses Basara instead, which doesn't help the situation at all.
• Because You Were Nice to Me: Zest hits this one hard when it comes to Basara. Fortunately he winds up liking her, too.
• Bedmate Reveal: In episode 5, Basara wakes up to find out Maria on top of him in bed. Not only is she under his sheet, she's inside the shirt he's wearing, and completely naked. He rams his fist into her head to get her off as she refused to move on her own.
• Best Served Cold: As it turns out, Mio's foster parents whom Zolgia murdered were the caretakers of an orphanage where Takigawa grew up. He's spent the entire series waiting for an opportunity to take his revenge and eventually does the deed.
• Big Damn Heroes:
  • Basara saves Mio from falling to her death shortly after they're attacked by demons.
  • Yuki attempts this for Mio in episode 10 against Zest. Subverted in that she's unable to defeat the demon by herself, though Mio provides some much needed assistance.
  • Basara does this against Zolgia moments later preventing him from killing Zest, and having his way with Yuki and Mio.
  • Lars ends up doing this in episode 11, freeing Maria's mother, and putting a puppet in her place to fool Zolgia into thinking he still had her hostage.
  • Ramsus and Basara rescue Mio from Nebra at the conclusion of volume 5.
  • Lars yet again has a moment at the end of volume 7, rescuing both a young orphan and his own childhood friend from a giant magitek war bot. Then Ramsus pulls an epic one to help Basara and Mio kill Chaos.
• The Big Damn Kiss: Basara gets three of these at the end of volume 3. First, he passionately kisses Mio after he decides he won't let anyone steal her away. Second, Yuki plants one on Basara, leading to a disagreement between her and Mio. And finally, after Basara tries to have Maria break up the fight, she kisses him instead rather than take Mio or Yuki's sides.
• Big Sister Instinct: If Liala finds out that you've harmed Leohart, you're as good as dead. The Demon Council learned this the hard way.
• Black Mail: Used once, and referenced to during episode 9:
  • Played for Laughs when Yuki does this to Basara while attempting to perform the Master-Servant ritual. She is wearing lingerie, and Basara is attempts not to look at her. She then tells him to look, or else she was going to strip down.
  • Basara later talks to Takigawa after Mio is kidnapped. He finds out that Zolgia, Takigawa's demon boss, kidnapped Maria's mother after finding out she was helping Mio. He threatened to harm her mother unless Maria brings Mio to him.
• Blatant Lies: When Mio finds a girl's clothes outside the bathroom, she asks Basara what they're doing there. He claims that he's interested in cross-dressing. Naturally she doesn't believe him and opens the door to find Yuki inside.
• Board to Death: The Demon Council gets a Karmic Death courtesy of Liala.
• Book Ends: The first and twelfth volumes both have Mio and Basara holding her on the cover. However, there are a couple of minor differences; in the last one, Mio has a wedding band on her.
• Brainwashed:
  • Maria and Mio attempt this on Basara, but it doesn't work. It's implied they did it to his father as well, but he tells his son it didn't affect him either, though he played along with it.
  • Mio's two friends at school appear to be under this as well in episode 9, when one of them attempts to seduce Basara in the boys locker room. Mio runs off after seeing this, while Yuki stays and attempts to break their brainwashing while Basara goes out to look for Mio.
  • Less overt, but the Master-Servant pact can trigger its curse for non-compliant thoughts, shown when Mio thinks badly of Basara's interaction with Yuki, or when Zest simply feels she's not worthy of being Basara's servant.
    • Technically the curse only triggers when the servant feels like they've betrayed their master. Which means servants can, for example, lie to their master to protect him, and Mio can slap Basara if it appears to actually be his fault, since she won't feel guilty. But while it can't put thoughts into their heads, it can heavily reinforce certain thoughts and attitudes (i.e. loyalty and submission). This trigger extends to even subconscious feelings, as Mio felt slightly guilty for getting jealous of Yuki and triggered the curse, despite that being a perfectly normal reaction even outside of an Unwanted Harem. Maria later notes that the curse is specifically built not to trigger towards other servants of the same master, as it would lead to a neverending chain of jealousy and eventually death for all involved.
• Break the Cutie: Mio's parents were killed, along with her real father the demon king prior to the show starting. Basara also kicks them out after they tried to brainwash him, but he changes his mind after learning more about their past. And in episode 3, Yuki attempts this as well to keep the two apart, not to mention Lars telling her about being Locked Out of the Loop that Basara and Maria were killing low level demons at night to prevent the hero clan from turning her into an assassination target. Zolgia also attempts this by forcing them to watch him blow up Maria's mother. It works, but then Zolgia learns why Bullying a Dragon is a bad idea after Mio's powers awaken again.
• Breather Episode:
  • Episode 5 starts off with Maria waking up naked on top of Basara, followed by him accidentally walking in on Mio in the bathroom, and Yuki washing his back after Maria lets her into his house. That said, a lot of plot development still occurs, with new demons and even heroes making their presence known.
  • Episode 8 focuses on the harem hijinks, with Yuki moving into Basara's house to observe Mio more easily. Naturally Mio is unhappy with this, particularly when Maria shows off a video of Basara "training" Mio from earlier, and Yuki demanding the same "training" from him as well. And like episode 5, some plot development occurs at the end, this time showing the current demon lord watching clips of Basara and Mio during their fight in episode 4 with the masked assailant.
• But Now I Must Go: Yuki leaves with the other heroes in episode 7 after Basara defeats them in a duel battle. But she returns in episode 8, stating that the village is reverting Mio's status from one of assassination to one of observation again, due partly to the events of Basara's win, and largely because his father made a call to the village.
• The Call Knows Where You Live: Though in this case it was because Basara's father adopted Mio and Maria to help protect them against the more militant demons that wanted to wage war against the humans.
• Can't Have Sex, Ever: Most of Basara's harem can't have sex with anyone but Basara without risk of dying, or at least going literally insane from induced maximum strength succubus lust in response to their "betrayal" of the Master-Servant pact.
  • Things are even worse in the Light Novel, where many members of the harem (notably including Mio) can't have sex at all without risk of losing their powers forever. Fortunately this only seems to apply to penetrative sex, judging by the harem's antics.
  • In an apparent attempt to become god of this trope, the author gives us possibly the flimsiest possible reason for Chisato in that her hymen is an erogenous spot and she and Basara apparently decide it'd be more fun to keep it that way. Cue fandom Face Fault.
  • Averted towards the end of of the series as now not only do they have sex but in fact must in order to survive. That cracking sound was your neck breaking from whiplash.
• Casting Gag:
  • Lauren Landa (Mio's English VA) previously voiced Xenovia Quarta, a devil who falls in love with the protagonist, in High School D×D.
  • As with Samurai Champloo, Kirk Thornton played a a character named Jin.
• Catchphrase: Mio's "I'll kill you a hundred times!", usually when she's angry at Basara. On one occasion it mutates into its The Same, but More form, "I'll kill you a million times!"
• Cavalry Betrayal: The heroes seen in episode 5 save Basara from Valga, a demon sent to assassinate Mio during a fight in episode 6. However, they quickly reveal that their goal is to kill Mio herself.
• Censor Box: Used often in the TV broadcast but instead of black bars it's replaced with images of the various characters in combination with Lens Flare Censor.
• Censor Steam: Used heavily in the broadcast version of the anime.
• Chekhov's Skill: The spell that Maria gives to Basara to find out where Mio is at any time in episode 2 comes in very handy in the next episode after she disappears from the nurse's office.
• Childhood Friends: Yuki grew up with Basara until he was exiled from the hero village. She also intends to become a case of Victorious Childhood Friend, though Mio doesn't make it easy for her.
• Cliffhanger:
  • Episode 3 ends on one, with Basara intercepting an attack intended for Mio. He seems to be bleeding profusely from said attack as well.
  • At the end of episode 9, Mio has been kidnapped, and Basara has been seemingly defeated by Lars, who then produces his body.
  • After Basara confronts Zolgia, he is afflicted by a spell from the latter preventing him from moving. Zolgia then attempts to delve inside of him to learn what abilities he has. The credits roll just as he's about to search Basara's mind.
• Clingy Jealous Girl:
  • When Yuki Nonaka gives Basara a hug in class during volume 1/episode 2, Mio doesn't like it at all, and attempts to forcibly separate the two. She's also angry with him for the rest of the day. And in episode 8, she clearly doesn't like seeing Yuki attempting to kiss Basara, nor her willingness to enter a Master-Servant pact with him.
  • Yuki isn't above this herself. In episode 5, after hearing Basara and Mio talk about the "accident" of him walking in on her while she was in the bathroom, Yuki, who was washing his back, then takes off her towel and starts hugging him. She also gets mad that he bathed with Mio and Maria, but won't do it with her even though they did it as kids.
    • Both girls refuse to back off Basara in the finale of volume 3/episode 12 after Mio attempts to take the lead on Basara. Him asking for Maria's help only makes it worse as she then kisses him in front of the two girls.
• Clothing Damage:
  • Kurumi, Yuki's sister, suffers from this after taking a hit from Basara in episode 7.
  • Mio suffers this in episode 9 of Burst while attempting to save Basara while inside of his mind.
• Conservation of Ninjutsu: The Zest-clones that attack Zest, Mio, and Basara in episode 12 are defeated rather easily, compared to when they're fighting one on one with someone else. Justified in that they were not as magically proficient as Zest herself given how surprised Zest was when she realized that those clones can "already" use magic, and that they're in a state of almost mindless berserker rage.
• Cooldown Hug:
  • Mio does one to Basara in episode 7 to help him wake up after Yuki knocks him out with a sleeping potion.
  • Basara does one to Mio in episode 10 after telling her he would save her and help rescue her mother.
  • Mio does one to Basara again in episode 9 of Burst.
• Cool vs. Awesome: Jin's fight with the demon lord, as hinted at during the very end of season 1. Season 2's Burst follows up with their fight right at the beginning of episode 1, and Jin quickly concludes that the current demon lord isn't half-bad. He also suspects that someone under him is doing some scheming. Their fight is interrupted after he deflects one of the demon lord's attacks, with Jin rescuing an unconscious demon falling down from a part of the castle that was destroyed, then getting dragged away after they fall into a river below.
• Covered with Scars: Basara's body is riddled with scars, likely due to training he received years earlier.
• Crapsack World: Averted. Basara and the others aside from Maria were expecting the demon world to be this. But when they first arrive, they're quite shocked to find out it doesn't look much different than European town in the Renaissance period. They even have pieces of modern tech or Magitek equivalents.
• Crazy Jealous Guy:
  • Basara is confronted by a large group of jealous guys after hearing Mio is living with him, and are wondering if Yuki is more than just a childhood friend after what the two girls said and did in front of the classroom in episode 2.
  • Basara is overcome with this at the end of episode 12, after recalling something Lars told him about making sure he was "first" with Mio. He seems ready to ravage her, but comes to his senses before anything drastic happens. However, Mio wants him to do it and even gives him the green flag to take her, at least until Yuki enters the room demanding the same thing.
• Curb-Stomp Battle:
  • After Maria and Mio reveal their true identity to Basara and try to brainwash him into leaving, he shows them that they're not the only ones that can use magic. Due to being caught off guard, Basara could have easily killed the two girls right there if he wanted to. But he just tells them to leave the house instead due to tricking his father into leaving.
  • Basara is completely overwhelmed by Zolgia, though part of it is due to him taking a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown from Maria earlier, and Zolgia using Mio and Yuki as hostages.
  • Mio easily wins her match in the tournament arc in season 2. Unfortunately for Maria, she loses badly to Lars. Yuki's fight turns into one of these as well- for her unfortunate opponent.
  • The current demon lord Leohart seems to deliver one to Basara after his Worf Barrage attack. Unfortunately for him Basara takes a pill that reveals an I Am Not Left-Handed power, and he's quickly on the receiving end of one.
  • Liala curb-stomps the Demon Council at the conclusion of Volume 7 before they could destroy the entire Demon Realm.
• Cursed with Awesome: The Master-Servant pact Mio is forced into with Basara. Takigawa tells him in episode 5 that aside from the pact preventing Mio from betraying him, as their bonds grow, it also enhances both their combat abilities. He does warn that if the servant is captured by an enemy, it's considered the greatest betrayal, and most servants probably won't live through the ensuing damage caused by said betrayal.
• Cutting the Knot: In a significant departure from the original ending, in STORM, Basara ends the attempts of the various groups of demons to get control of Mio for the power she inherited from her father by using his Banishing Shift to eliminate that power altogether, making her fully human as a consequence.
• Damsel out of Distress: Maria and Kurumi pull this in Volume 7 when they're injured, unconscious, and about to be slowly killed by a demon while their friends watch helplessly.
• Dark and Troubled Past: Basara doesn't seem to have a good past with the hero clan judging by the discussion he has with Yuki about it in episode 3. It's also implied that he killed people around him, though they don't specify the cause behind it.
  • Elaborated upon a bit later: While Basara, Yuki and the other hero clan village children were on a training exercise, a clan member who opposed the current truce between heroes and demons decided to steal an Evil Weapon to go kill demons and force the issue, wound up a victim of Demonic Possession from the weapon, and went on a rampage, slaughtering villagers left and right, and when his rampage brought him to the village children (which he started cutting down as indiscriminately as the rest), Basara wound up accidentally invoking his Person of Mass Destruction powers for the first time while trying to protect Yuki, obliterating the guy and creating a huge crater but also inadvertently killing a lot of even more innocent people including his classmates. He's understandably exiled from the village as a result.
• Dark Is Not Evil: One of the core elements of the series. Despite their race being called demons, turns out most demons are just normal people except with horns and stuff. Similarly, demonic magic is no more inherently evil than human magic. The only reason demon magic is seen as evil is because demonic magical forces naturally suppress human magical forces, and vice versa.
• Date Peepers: Mio and Maria do this in episode 6 after Yuki goes on a shopping date with Basara.
• Decadent Court: They aren't called the Demon Council for nothing! Crimes include preparing for war against the gods by setting up civilians as the unprotected bait and unleashing a Kaiju-spawning insane "heroic spirit" whose main goal is to exterminate all of demonkind, meaning that its targets are the weakest and most innocent demon civilians its minions can find.
• Death by a Thousand Cuts:
  • Yuki breaks through Lars's shield spell in episode 4 by simply attacking the shield in the same spot over and over. It also takes Basara more than one attack to defeat the assailant.
  • Yuki pulls another variation of it in her fight in Episode 8 of Burst/Volume 7, cutting Demon Lord Volga so many times so fast that he abruptly falls apart into fist-sized chunks of meat.
• Death by Origin Story: Mio's adoptive parents and Wilbert. Mamoru Sakazaki and Basara's surrogate mother Raphaeline also.
• Declaration of Protection:
  • Basara does this towards Mio and Maria after finding out about their past. He repeats this to Yuki in episode 3 after the latter says that he shouldn't hang around Mio anymore.
  • Yuki does one in episode 7 towards Basara, effectively doing a Heel–Face Turn in the process as she was protecting Mio from her fellow clan member Takashi.
• Defeat Means Friendship:
  • Basara seems to get along with Takigawa rather well despite all the stuff that goes on around the school. This "friendship" proves to be invaluable when they're forced to work together to defeat Zolgia.
  • After Basara defeats and then saves Kurumi from falling to her death in episode 7, she stops trying to attack him.
  • Zest doesn't just become friends with Basara, she basically becomes a Hero-Worshipper. She regards him so highly that when she enters into a Master-Servant pact with him it immediately triggers the curse on her because she doesn't consider herself worthy enough to serve him.
• Delaying Action: Mio and Maria attempt this in the battle during episode 7 against Takashi. They draw his attention so Basara can take care of Kurumi first.
• Deus Sex Machina: Mio, Yuki and Zest are all bound by contract to Basara, so they grow more powerful when they "submit" to him through sex acts; Maria is a succubus who gains power from lust through the same sex acts; Kurumi's ability to access dark nether world spirits increases as she embraces her desires and weaknesses by, once again, engaging in various sex acts with Basara.
• Disc-One Final Boss: Zolgia is defeated at the end of season 1, but the demon lord who killed Mio's father is still around. At least until The Stinger reveals someone pays him a visit, Basara's father, who is The Dreaded amongst the demons and was singlehandedly the reason why the previous demon lord didn't wage war against the humans.
• Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male: Zigzagged throughout the series:
  • Played straight during the light-hearted comedic sections. Basara is often subjected to this by Mio and very rarely, Yuki.
  • Averted during actual fight scenes, such as when Maria is giving him a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown in volume 3. He just lets her pound on him since he knows she's being forced to do this due to her mother being kidnapped. And in the rare case where he does have to fight a female combatant, such as Kurumi, he tries to hold back as much as possible.
• Dragon with an Agenda: Zolgia isn't the Big Bad, but instead serves the current demon lord who killed Mio's demon lord father and usurped the position. Though he was tasked with kidnapping or killing Mio, he instead decides to try and steal her powers for himself. Lars even attempts to warn Zest, his underling, that the demon lord is suspicious of Zolgia's plans, but she kills him instead.
• The Dreaded: Basara finds out in episode 5 that his father is a genuine badass, and his ferocity in combat is the reason why the previous demon lord didn't do anything rash.
• Earn Your Happy Ending: Basara and the others really have to work to stop Zolgia's plans from succeeding. Ditto in Burst with the Council of Demonkind.
• Easily Forgiven:
  • Takigawa/Lars in episode 4. Basara lets him off the hook despite him attacking Mio and wounding him. However, Basara only does it because he doesn't think he can defeat whoever the demon lord sends in next, so figures Takigawa/Lars is the lesser of two evils right now.
  • Despite having been rivals, by episode 9 Mio seems perfectly okay with Yuki after they spend time bonding with Basara while bathing. Some of their classmates even notice how close they seem to be.
  • Zest is given quite a bit of leniency considering her role in kidnapping Mio. However, it's justified in that Zolgia used her merely as a pawn, and was quick to discard her once she was no longer of use to him. Plus she helped Basara to stop the demon that Zolgia had chained up, something they couldn't have done on their own in time. She even helped kill a legion of her clones in the process.
  • Maria, despite having been forced to work with the Big Bad from season 1, doesn't seem to suffer a really bad punishment as a result. Though Basara "punishes" her instead of her sister, he doesn't seem to do anything worse than what he does to Mio and Yuki.
• Eldritch Abomination: Chaos, a demonic spirit, is summoned by some nobles from the demon lord's faction in episode 9 of Burst. True to its name, it starts summoning other large demonic spirits, who then go on to attack both demon factions indiscriminately.
• End of an Age: By the end of volume 7, the annihilation of the Demon Council signifies the end of their brutal reign of the Demon Realm.
• Enemy Civil War: Mio's demon lord father, Wilbert, attempted to lead a more peaceful coexistence with humans. However, some of them didn't like it, and wanted war instead. As a result, they killed him, usurped his power, and attempt to kidnap or kill Mio in order to prevent her from taking power with help from demons who felt the same way her father did.
• Enemy Mine:
  • Basara not only has to protect Mio from a hostile demon faction, but potentially from the hero clan as well, who also shows interest in Mio due to her status as the demon lord's daughter.
  • In episode 10, he attempts to do this with Lars, who seems indifferent to Mio being kidnapped. But it turns out him turning Basara over to Zest was part of their plan to free Mio, and give Lars his chance at revenge at Zolgia for killing Mio's foster parents, who also ran an orphanage Lars grew up in.
  • Basara, Mio, and the current demon lord all suddenly find themselves being targeted by Chaos, an Eldritch Abomination summoned by nobles belonging to the demon lord's faction.
• Entitled Bastard:
  • The hero clan, but especially Takashi, call Basara out on his involvement in the Brynhildr incident even though the incident scarred him much more than them and he was unable to control his powers at the time, although it's not without reason given that their friends were killed in the massacre. Mio calls them out after hearing this reason for the umpteenth time.
  • When the village learns about what happened in the Demon Realm after the conclusion of volume 7, they send Basara back to the village for flaunting "their rules and traditions" despite his exile and their vaulted "rules" no longer apply, rather than being grateful Basara neutralized a massive threat, at incredible risk and effort.
• Establishing Character Moment:
  • Basara first runs into Mio while she's using the bathroom. He then ends up going inside and covers her mouth up to keep her quiet, lest she screams and someone mistakes it for an assault.
  • When Yuki is first introduced in episode 2, the first thing she does is give Basara a hug. This angers Mio, as well as the rest of the boys at his school due to the two girls being viewed as untouchable idols.
  • One of the first times we see Zest is when she's watching Mio, Maria, and Basara's sexy antics and musing to herself wistfully.
• Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Leohart clearly loves his sister Liala.
• Evil Plan: Zolgia thought about his plans well in advance, and tried to plan for every eventuality, such as kidnapping Maria's mother to force Maria to give up Mio. And later creating his dungeon lair in the insides of a dangerous creature, so if he gets killed, the creature is set loose, destroying the planet.
• Evil Versus Evil: In volume 7, Liala exacts revenge on the Demon Council for initiating the complete destruction of the Demon Realm.
• Excuse Plot: Not as thin as some, but much of the plot seems to serve little purpose other than to enable Sex Sells and Violence Really Is the Answer.
  • The Master-Servant pact is probably the most suspiciously convenient element of the show; not only does the pact's "curse" give two of the normally non-lusty female characters no choice but to be sexual sometimes, the pact strengthening all members of it each time they engage in sexy fun times gives the entire main cast a vested interest in keeping the Fanservice flowing. The pact's strengthening element triggering specifically when the servants "submit" just provides an excuse for said Fanservice to get more and more erotic as the series goes on.
  • Coming in a close second is Mio's attendant Maria being a succubus, and one who isn't going to simply not act like one. Quite a few of the more erotic events of the series come down to her meddling.
• Eyes Always Shut: Shiba, one of the heroes who travels to the city Mio and Basara are in. He opens it in one instance after warning Takashi against killing Mio right now, particularly after losing a battle to Basara. Takashi nervously backs down.
• Fanservice: All over the place in the show, such as showing off the girls nearly naked and some low angles on Mio.
• Fanservice Pack: A majority of the individuals in Basara's harem. The Master-Servant Pact, in addition to making the participants more powerful, also makes them more sexually attractive and endowed the higher the Pact's level and the number of participants in the Pact as time goes on, especially with the Master-Servant Vow. The main example of this being Mio's increasing bust size over the series and her growing, meaty thighs. It seems to vary as to how they become attractive, as some girls get general physical improvements, such as in Volume 12 where Rikka notes how much more womanly Zest, Mio and Chisato's bodies have become in their breasts and waists, and Nanao growing from being so flat she can pass as a boy to having an F-Cup in the Vol.11 Epilogue, according to Uesu. Then you have Yuki, who only gets comparatively lesser, but still noticeable and significant changes to her overall body and breasts while the majority of the focus goes to increasing her already large hips, ass, thighs, and long legs. Meanwhile Maria doesn't seem to benefit from it at all and keeps the same child-like appearance. Finally, this not only includes the girls, but also Basara as well, who came out of his time-looped subjugation session with Chisato being described as much taller and more masculine. And Chisato even becomes intimidated in the final volume on how much... larger he's become below the belt.
• Fantastic Racism: The Hero Tribe's stated purpose of eliminating all demons sounds good... until you actually talk to any halfway-friendly demon and find out that they're basically just people, some bad, some good. Not that some demons don't have their own bigoted opinions on humanity, too.
• Fetish: An integral part of the plot. A chief part of Basara's pact with his "servants" precludes him trying to deduce what his girls "like." Some of it is quite obvious, like Mio and Yuki. Some of it tends to the obscure, like Zest and Kurumi. Maria just likes to enjoy the journey, as much as the destination.
• Fetishized Abuser: Both Lampshaded and Averted. Early into the Master-Servant pact between Basara and Mio, Maria attempts to give Basara advice on how to make himself more likeable to Mio, which boils down to "belittle her and make her unsure of herself so you can control her," which Maria swears she will like. Her proof: an H-Game. Despite the obvious idiocy, Basara plays it as a nice guy only to get a bad ending, then has a much better time picking the abusive responses. He still doesn't take Maria's advice, regardless.
• Fish out of Water: Kurumi arrives at Basara's house as backup for Yuki in observing Mio during episode 1 of Burst. She walks in while they're in the middle of a bonding session, with Mio and Yuki dressed in provocative outfits, and is unaware of the master/servant pact they are in with Basara. Maria then defends the decision, stating that it helped them in their fight against Zolgia, and that by bonding in this fashion, it would make them stronger. She then also forces Kurumi to feel some of the effects.
• Flash Back: Used from time to time to show what happened to the characters in the past, such when Basara and Yuki were still kids and training.
• Flash Step: Basara does this to Maria in the first episode after she tries to brainwash him into leaving the house. They quickly find out that they're not the only ones that can use magic.
• Flirty Step Siblings: Predictably, Basara has much romantic and sexual tension with his new sisters.
• Forced Kiss: After Mio kisses Basara at the conclusion of volume 3, Yuki grabs the latter by the collar and forcibly kisses him.
• Forced Orgasm: Mio has a curse seal placed on her that makes her a servant to Basara. If she disobeys him or has other negative feelings towards him such as jealousy, it immediately activates the seal which causes her to become aroused, and the longer it stays active the more aroused she gets. The only way to turn off the seal is for Basara to bring her to orgasm, but a key part of it is that she has to submit to his efforts to satisfy her, or else it still won't deactivate. Because she's an extremely stubborn tsundere, the first time he had to relieve her it took nine forced orgasms before she finally submitted to it. Averted later in the series: after she's genuinely fallen in love with him he normally only needs to do it once or twice, if she even resists at all.
• Forgotten First Meeting: Basara doesn't remember Yuki at first when she gives him a hug in front of their class. However, after a little reminder, he begins to recognize her, which doesn't make Mio happy.
• For Want Of A Nail: If the man from the hero village didn't steal Brynhildr, not only would Basara's Traumatic Superpower Awakening might have been avoided, but most of his fellow friends wouldn't have accidentally been killed by his Banishing Shift, and he wouldn't have been exiled.
• Friendly Enemy:
  • Yuki towards Mio and Maria, due to Basara siding with the two girls. Though she's still antagonistic towards them due to a Love Triangle.
  • Takigawa towards Basara. Despite attacking Mio, Basara would rather act as if it didn't happen to avoid Takigawa's boss from sending someone even stronger if he hears about his minion failing. They're seen eating together at an expensive restaurant in episode 5. Takigawa warns Basara that his boss is still sending reinforcements after the incident in the park as a precaution, but at least tells him about it ahead of time.
• Gender-Restricted Ability: Downplayed. While most, if not all, of Basara's harem turn out to be unable to have sexual intercourse with anyone, including Basara himself, without risking the loss of their powers permanently, and it's strongly implied to apply universally to super-natural females in the series, regardless of origin, none of the male characters are shown with this restriction. Especially not Belphegor who is showcased having sex, on screen, to the death of his partners.
• Genre Savvy: In Burst, Basara is warned by one of his teachers that Chisato, the school nurse, should not be trusted as she seems to be doing suspicious things such as mind-controlling students who are acting up. Basara however realizes that the teacher is the more suspicious one, as his father never warned him about her. The teacher realizes his cover is blown, and instead attacks Basara.
• George Lucas Altered Version: The DVD and Blu-ray releases of the anime added and altered several scenes not featured in the original broadcast version, such as the addition of several sexual sequences with Basara and his harem.
• The Glomp:
  • Yuki does one to Basara in episode 2. Mio is not happy with it at all, especially after finding out she's a childhood friend.
  • Basara returns the favor to Yuki in episode 8 after she went back to the hero village and was gone for at least ten days, only to find her at his house cooking some food.
• God and Satan Are Both Jerks: Many high-ranking Demons and Gods are revealed to be both depraved and uncaring of humanity.
• Good All Along: Despite appearing to be a major case of Heel–Face Revolving Door, Lars ultimately is revealed to be a celebrated hero of the demon realm known for saving orphans from giant monsters, among other things. His complex web of loyalties and alliances really just boils down to wanting to minimize the amount of death that is going to come out of the demon realm civil war.
• Gory Discretion Shot: In episode 12, Zolgia's shadow is seen briefly. His head then explodes, and blood splatters on the ground nearby.
• Green-Eyed Monster: Zest tries this on Mio this in volume 3, claiming Basara isn't interested in saving her, but Maria instead. Mio immediately throws this on Zest, asking her if she was truly happy being Zolgia's servant. She later nearly gets killed by Zolgia after he claims her failure to guard Mio led to her defeat by the latter and Yuki partly due to her jealousy at the two girls and their relationship with Basara.
• Grey-and-Gray Morality:
  • The hero tribe exists to take out hostile demons, but Basara fights them as well as demons attempting to harm Mio. After he defeats them in a battle, the heroes temporarily call off the attack and continue their observation of Mio instead.
  • Similarly, the demons have various factions, and while some are the typical evil type that attacks humans, others mostly just want to live in peace. Mio's demon lord father, as well as Maria, was of the latter group, and the ones attacking her belong to the former, and they attempt to kill Mio every chance they get.
  • Even the "gods" of Heaven are shown as not being above unsavory behavior. If the official history of the Demon World can be believed, they're the ones who started the conflict with the Demon race, and altough some like Chisato are known to aid the humans for benevolent reasons, others only view humans as a shield against the demons, and get offended, to the point of attempting lethal retribution, if humans get too close to one of their own, or stop behaving like slaves/tools to be exploited.
• Groin Attack: Mio does this to Basara in the first episode after he accidentally knocks her off his bed, then slips and falls on top of her.
• Hate Crimes Are a Special Kind of Evil: Zolgia and Belphegor are Serial Rapists who believe that women have no worth aside from being sexual toys. Both demons' greatest delight is to capture attractive women and subject them to sexual torture, especially women already claimed by a Master-Servant pact. They abuse the function of the pact which causes the servant pain and increased sexual arousal if they "betray" their masters, molesting them until the agony of the magic completely shatters their minds and makes them a lifeless vegetable. At that point, they're free to rape them as much as they please, dispose of them after they get bored, and then find another. At the same time, the woman's master will be Mind Raped by a false fantasy of making love to their slave while she's being violated in reality, and if he's especially "lucky", he'll be Forced to Watch. No one, except for utter monsters who think the same as they, even remotely likes Zolgia or Belphegor, with Belphegor even intentionally adopting Zolgia's methods after his death simply because he believes that this is the only proper way to treat women, and that it'd be a shame if the "playground" went to waste.
• Happiness in Slavery: Played with via the Master-Servant pact:
  • Mio is initially quite unhappy to be Basara's servant, but by the time Kurumi comes to check up on the household she seems content with the arrangement. Later she explicitly confirms her happiness with her situation.
  • Yuki is certainly a willing participant from the start, but there's not much indication that she's happy until quite a bit later. Not that it's easy to tell with her.
  • Zest on the other hand isn't just happy to be Basara's, she triggers the pact's curse the moment she enters into it because she worries that she's not worthy of it.
  • In the light novels, Chisato's hidden desire is to become Basara's "property" by having him screw her into total submission. She gets her wish during the final volume, after Basara spends an entire "year's" time conditioning her body to respond to his touch alone.
• Happily Adopted: Implied with Mio and Maria after they start living with Basara and his father.
• Heel–Face Turn:
  • Done by the Nonaka sisters in episode 7, after they realize Basara isn't trying to kill them and simply wants to protect Mio from harm.
  • Zest switches alliances quickly after she realizes Zolgia considers her disposable (when he tries to kill her), while Basara actually went out of his way to save her life. Her decision is only reaffirmed when she later finds (and has to kill) the clones that Zolgia planned to replace her with.
• Hero's Slave Harem: A major example, with the master-slave pact being a major part of the plot. The writers try to go out of their way to either give Basara an excuse or contrive a reason why he needs to do it, mind.
• Hero with Bad Publicity: Basara is immediately hated by Mio and Yuki's schoolmates after he's seen with the two girls fighting over him. And this on top of the exile he suffered from the hero village years earlier.
• Heroic BSoD: Basara went into a major one after his clan was inadvertently massacred in the Brynhildr incident.
• He Who Fights Monsters: Basara starts off as a former member of the Hero Tribe who was trained to reject everything about the demon world, and to fight demons and their servants. By the end of Burst/Volume 7 he has a harem of three demons plus two Heroes he's convinced to abandon the Hero Tribe, has demonic pacts with three of them, is friends with several other demons, and even uses demonic powers of his own on occasion. He's a demon lord in everything but name, though he's still one of the good guys, without question.
• Hidden Backup Prince: Mio was raised as a normal human girl, but she is actually the daughter of the demon king. After he's killed, Maria goes out to search for Mio and helps to train her on how to use her powers.
• Hoist by His Own Petard:
  • Maria's attempts to pull dirty tricks on Basara and Mio often backfire on her.
  • The Demon Council cause complete chaos in the demon realm and plot to kill Leohart. This backfires on them big time when Basara offs Chaos and Belphegor, Maria giving a well deserved No-Holds-Barred Beatdown on Admirath, and Liala of all people decapitates Madonis and the rest of the council members.
• Hope Spot: Rare villainous example in episode 12 with Zolgia. He hopes to make a deal with whoever comes in, hoping they hate him enough to manipulate them, but instead of Mio or Zest, it's Basara. He attempts to make a last minute Deal with the Devil anyway, but Basara just wants to make sure he's really dead.
• Hotter and Sexier:
  • The first OVA, which does even more naughty things than shown in the regular show, such as Maria attempting to use a banana as a sex toy on Mio. The latter portion has Basara essentially having various forms of sex with Chisato, in the shower of her apartment, after inviting him over for dinner.
  • The spinoff manga The Testament of Sister New Devil STORM! is serialized in a seinen rather than a shonen magazine, with its main selling point being that it's a more explicit retelling of the original story. While Seven Seas rates the English release of the original manga for older teens, this one is shrinkwrapped and rated for mature audiences only, and with good reason.
  • Volume 12, and the finale book to boot. It's one long volume of a series' worth of sexual tension getting released. All the girls get some loving by Basara, the pictures are as explicit as they come, and it gets messy.
• I Ate WHAT?!: In the OVA, Maria cooks something and asks Basara to taste-test it. He chews on something and swallows it, then asks what the heck she made. Maria then tells him that it was Mio's panties. Basara is understandably upset by it. But Yuki, who happened to overhear it and Comically Missing the Point, takes off her own panties, and tells Basara to eat hers as well.
• If You Kill Him, You Will Be Just Like Him!: Mio finally has the opportunity to kill Zolgia in episode 11. But Basara stops her from doing so, saying that he didn't want her to have blood on her hands, even if it was justified. This would've also ruined the deal he made with Lars, who wanted to kill Zolgia personally due to him killing Mio's adoptive parents, who ran an orphanage he grew up in. Fortunately Mio calms down, and Zolgia manages to escape, only to be caught by Lars.
• I Have You Now, My Pretty:
  • Zolgia doesn't just want Mio for her power. In fact he pretty much wants to sexually enslave any attractive female who he can get his hands on.
  • Belphegor is a less overt example, at least at first, but it turns out he has similar intentions. The he amps up the creepy factor by remarking that Basara would probably look good as a Sex Slave, too. That probably made it all the more satisfying when Basara killed him a moment later.
• I Just Want to Be Loved: Zest winds up with a serious case of this and I Just Want to Have Friends after getting a first-hand comparison of how Zolgia and Basara treat allies who have failed them. Fortunately for her, Basara and his harem seem to pick up on this and take a quick liking to her, to the joy of everyone.
• "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Mio does this for Basara in episode 9 of Burst, after he suffers a Superpower Meltdown and seems to have been taken over by whatever power he was using.
• Imagine Spot: One occurs in episode 2 of Burst, when Mio and Yuki suddenly start trying to do lewd things to Basara, and suffer from some melting clothing after getting hit by some water balloons. This happens right in the middle of the sports festival, as lots of people gawk at them. Said scene then turns out to be Maria's imagination going wild, and wishing she could be there to see what they were really doing, which was just running the race the three were taking part in.
• The Immodest Orgasm: Mio suffers a love curse in episode 2 which Maria says will break her will and make her more susceptible to agreeing to form the master/slave contract with Basara. She tells him to touch her in various places to make her less resistant to forming the contract. Later Maria comments Mio went nine times, while wiping a wet part of the floor. In fact, none of the ladies in the series "go quietly."
• Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: A lot of characters get stabbed or otherwise brutally impaled during the series run. Basara falls victim to it on several occasions and eventually returns the favor in episode 6 of Burst, by literally stabbing Nebra In the Back.
• Insecure Love Interest:
  • Mio gets extremely jealous any time she sees Basara with another girl, especially Yuki.
  • Kurumi sometimes feels she can't compete with her older sister, and trying to romance Basara is no exception.
  • Yuki herself has a bit of this, though mostly when it comes to Mio.
  • Zest has a major case of "I'm not worthy of him", though once she enters into the Master-Servant pact with Basara those mistaken thoughts are corrected in the most severe and Fanservice-y way possible.
• It Amused Me: Yahiro Takigawa, a male student at Mio and Basara's school, befriends the latter in episode 2 solely because he thinks the ruckus Basara caused with Mio and Yuki fighting over him is going to be interesting to watch. He even jokingly tells Basara if the guys come after him, he's going to throw the latter under the bus to save his own skin. He actually turns out to be Lars, a demon sent to spy on Mio, and attempt to capture her if the situation presented itself.
• It's All My Fault:
  • Basara is completely devastated about inadvertently killing his own people in the Brynhildr incident.
  • When Basara is struck down in front of Mio by one of Lars' minions coming out of her shadow, she runs off in the middle of the night so she wouldn't endanger him anymore. While this is a truly idiotic move, it's understandable due to the trigger nature of the scene.
• It's for a Book: When trying to convince Basara to be a Fetishized Abuser to Mio because supposedly it's what she secretly wants, Maria presents an H-Game as "proof" of what women actually want. Basara scoffs at the obvious stupidity... but then plays through it at least twice. Just to prove her wrong, of course.
• Karmic Death:
  • Zolgia killing Mio's parents, obliterating Lars's hometown and using Zest as his servant end up causing his death.
  • The Demon Council's underhanded tactics to kill Leohart and cause chaos in the Demon Realm come back to bite them big time when Liala kills the remaining members in Burst and Volume 7.
• Knight Templar Big Brother: Basara offers to do this for Mio and Maria, claiming they're family.
• Know When to Fold 'Em: When the hero clan's mission to kill Mio is withdrawn, Shiba convinces Takashi and Kurumi to stand down before they leave.
• Lap Pillow:
  • Kurumi does it to Basara in episode 7.
  • Zest acts as the pillow for Basara after she enters into a Master-Servant Pact with him.
  • The first OVA concludes with a scene of Basara unconscious, after Chisato wipes his memory of making her climax. She's seen naked while cradling his head on her lap.
• Lens Flare Censor: The TV broadcast of anime does this a lot to cover nudity. It's all removed for the Blu-Rays.
• Let No Crisis Go to Waste: In episode 9 of Burst, some of the nobles belonging to the current Demon Lord's faction summon Chaos, an Eldritch Abomination. It summons more giant creatures, which then go on to attack various cities in the demon realm. Unfortunately it summons more than they thought, and towns belonging to their faction come under attack. One of the nobles says this is a good opportunity to test out their abilities for their upcoming war being planned against the gods, and don't seem concerned with the casualties their side is going to suffer.
• Let Us Never Speak of This Again: Jin makes this demand to the Hero Faction after their mission to kill Mio is withdrawn end of volume 1.
• Linear Warriors, Quadratic Wizards: Implied between the more melee oriented characters and Mio. Basara, Yuki, and Maria are all fairly experienced and powerful fighters. However, Mio has yet to fully awaken her abilities and the powers she inherited from her father. When she briefly awakens, she manages to overwhelm Zolgia, whom Basara had been having trouble with.
• Locked Out of the Loop: In episode 3, Basara is told by Yuki that Mio's latent powers were inadvertently attracting low level demons. As a result, he and Maria end up going out each night hunting them down to prevent them from attacking humans. Mio doesn't find out about this till at least a week has passed, and only finds out because Lars tells her that he was doing it with Maria in secret. Hence why Maria stopped picking them up and why he was always tired in school.
• Lotus-Eater Machine: When Zolgia decides to put Basara under his control, Basara's body goes catatonic while in his mind, he's in a bed being serviced by every female character in the series. He manages to snap out of it.
• Lover Tug of War: Once Yuki moves in to Basara's household in episode 9, she and Mio do this to Basara almost constantly.
• Ludicrous Gibs: Mio's adoptive human father suffered this fate as seen in her Flash Back during episode 9. Maria's mother suffers this as well in episode 11, though it's eventually subverted, as the thing that blew up was a puppet resembling her mother. Lars has rescued her earlier and made the puppet to fool Zolgia.
• Magical Contract: The Master-Servant pact.
• A Magic Contract Comes with a Kiss: A Master/Slave contract is sealed by the slave kissing a symbol that appears on the master.
• Male Gaze: Mio is often seen from low angles to show off her shapely body.
• Marionette Master: Lars is capable of making copies of himself, which is why despite Basara "destroying him" back in episode 4, he still shows up again. This also comes in incredibly handy in episode 10 and 11, after Zest "kills" him and burns the body, only to have another Lars show up later.
• Marry Them All: Complete with impregnation, too. Basara plans to marry them within the month.
• Mate or Die: Due to the Master-Servant pact, any of Basara's affected harem who trigger its lust curse must "submit" to him (which always seems to involve orgasms), or the curse will continue to increase in strength until they go insane and/or die.
• Mercy Kill: Mio begs Basara to do this in episode 4 after she suffers from Power Incontinence. He instead banishes her power.
• Mind-Control Eyes: Basara displays some in episode 10 after being seduced by Maria in her true form. However, it doesn't last long, and he regains control after a short while.
• Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: Zest stays loyal to Zolgia until he decides he doesn't need her anymore and attempts to kill her. After being rescued by Basara, she sides with the heroes to defeat Zolgia.
• Moment Killer: Mio interrupts the kiss Yuki was trying to plant on Basara in episode 8.
• Mood Whiplash: The show switches between romantic high school comedy, ecchi scenes two steps removed from hentai, and fantasy action set pieces.
• Mr. Exposition: Shiba does this in episode 7, commenting on various things in the battle between Basara and the heroes, and explaining various things such as the attacks Takashi uses on Mio and Maria.
• Ms. Fanservice:
  • Special mention goes to Chisato Hasegawa in a series full of them due to the abusrd amount of fanservice tropes she checks. She's an older woman with a fully developed figure that takes Hospital Hottie to a new level when she heals Basara sexually in one scene of the show and gets a gratuitous shower scene. Speaking of her figure, she has the largest breasts, longest legs, and widest hips of Basara's harem and the glasses she puts on help accentuate her beautiful face. Banking on her popularity, she gets her own focus in the first OVA making love to Basara in the shower and then has notable scenes in the second OVA which feature her in a revealing bikini and a sex scene in the hot springs where she allows Basara to suck her lacting breasts. In essence, the creators held no punches with her, and illustrator Nekosuke Ōkuma admitted he'd want to marry her of all the girls in the series.
  • Mio is often seen in suggestive positions, wearing little clothing, and even toys with Basara a bit in the first episode.
• Mugging the Monster: In volume 1, a group of delinquents try to hit on Mio, but she brushes them off. Then, Basara confronts the delinquents, hits one of them with his bike, throws pepper at the others, and Basara makes his escape with Mio. Basara has a similar one moments later, when Mio and Maria reveal their true nature as devils and attempt to brainwash him. In most other series, this would be the moment the hapless protagonist is cowed by his decidedly not-normal new siblings: instead, Basara reveals his own powers, effortlessly blocks Maria's attack, and terrifies the two of them into backing down.
• Mum Looks Like a Sister: Maria's mother, Shella, doesn't look much taller or older than she does, and could easily be mistaken for her older sister. Basara nearly accidentally calls her that when he first meets her.
• Naked Apron: Maria wears one in the first episode. Subverted when she reveals she's actually wearing clothing underneath, though she does tease him a little first.
• New Transfer Student: Basara transfers to Mio's school to better protect her in episode 2.
• Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
  • In volume 1, Basara tells Mio not to let anyone at their school know that they're living together, lest it causes a scandal. Unfortunately, after he introduces himself to her class after transfering there, the class rep, Yuki, gives him The Glomp, and turns out to be a childhood friend of his. This causes some jealousy in Mio, who then lets it slip that they're living together.
  • Basara's battle against the hero clan member during the Brynhildr incident causes several more innocent people including Basara's fellow classmates to be killed, which leads to his exile.
• Nice Job Fixing It, Villain:
  • Zolgia's cruel treatment of Zest, right in front of Yuki, Mio, and Basara made it much, much easier for her to be accepted by the harem later.
  • Belphegor's own horrifically abusive behavior towards the women in his "playground" left them so badly traumatized that they couldn't testify about the identity of his killer, as shown in the conclusion of volume 7.
  • Madonis using Chaos to attack Leohart, Basara, and Mio, letting the "Heroic Spirits" that were summoned by him run rampant in the demon realm, and then trying to blow up the city to hide the council's embarrassment gave Basara a much needed major boost in his legitimacy as the rightful owner of the power Mio inherited from Wilbert, as well as Mio herself, and directed the vast majority of the resentment of both the Demon Lord and Moderate factions right where it belongs, on the council faction, and all the subordinates therein.
• No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Basara kills the clan member who steals the Brynhildr with his Banishing Shift in his backstory, but inadvertently kills several of his friends in the process and goes into exile.
• No-Holds-Barred Beatdown:
  • Maria delivers one to Basara in episode 10 due to his unwillingness to fight her. She does it because Zest is watching her, and if Maria doesn't go all out, Zolgia would kill her mother.
  • At the conclusion of Volume 7/Burst, Maria delivers a particularly brutal one to Admirath for harming her and the Nonaka sisters.
• Non-Indicative Name: "Toujou Basara" literally translates as "Fancy Appearance", but he's probably the least fancy character in the series. Lampshaded in episode 2 when Basara introduces himself to his new class: "My name's a bit over the top, but I'm an average guy." Unfortunately for most English speakers, this line is Lost in Translation, as nowhere in the anime is the meaning behind Basara's name explained.
• Non-Protagonist Resolver: Madonis and the rest of the Demon Council aren't killed by Basara and his harem at the conclusion of Volume 7; that honor instead goes to Liala.
• Noodle Incident: There is no mention of what got Shiba arrested in the Hero Village to begin with, nor what the elders did to make sure he "behaved himself" as the observer. Even then, there's no mention of how he and Basara know each other.
• Nose Bleed: Basara is implied to have suffered one in episode 3, as he wakes up in his bed with tissue stuffed up his nostrils. Maria says most of what happened in the bath actually did happen, but part of it was just a dream, then teases him for having such a naughty one with Mio and herself in the bath.
• No-Sell:
  • Mio's attack on her masked assailant in episode 4 looks flashy, but doesn't do anything to hurt him since her powers are still weak.
  • Mio's attempt to flood the floor Takashi is on in episode 7 doesn't work after he reveals he was able to manipulate the air to prevent himself from drowning.
  • Maria manages to punch her opponent rather hard in the face during her match in season 2. Unfortunately it doesn't do anything significant to Lars, who then comments that since she's not used to her super powered form, and is relying mostly on brute strength, he easily evades her next few attacks and defeats her.
• No Sense of Personal Space: Maria uses this in episode 5, waking up Basara while on top of him in his bed. He then finds out she's inside his t-shirt, and naked.
• Not Always Evil: If you believe the current leadership of the Hero Tribe, demons are universally evil and need to be exterminated. After interacting with them enough though, several characters realize this isn't true, and that most demons are basically just people only with horns and stuff. The real problem is that the only demons who make it to the human realm tend to be either the Evil Overlord types or their Mooks.
• Not Blood Siblings: Maria and Mio towards Basara. At first it was really just a ploy to steal his father's house, but after Basara learns the truth about the two girls from his father, he ends up protecting them anyway like a big brother. Mio later even starts calling him "onii-chan", or big brother in Japanese. In the light novels Mio will call him this as she is sexually pleasuring him. Basara at least takes it as teasing, but it certainly doesn't stop his enjoyment of whatever is happening, because of course it doesn't.
• Not What It Looks Like: Basara is caught in situations like this with Mio quite often.
• An Offer You Can't Refuse: Used twice in episode 4.
  • The masked assailant, Lars tells Mio it's her fault for getting Basara involved, and tells her she can stop this by simply coming with him back to the demon realm. She initially obliges, but Yuki and Basara end up saving her before she's taken back.
  • Rare heroic use of this trope. Basara makes a deal with Takigawa/Lars not to attack Mio and instead continue his observations. If he refuses, the former along with Maria could go to the acting demon lord and tell him Takigawa failed, prompting him to send someone stronger that Basara doesn't think he'd be able to defeat. This comes in very handy during episode 10 after Mio is kidnapped, as Lars also has an axe to grind with Zolgia for killing Mio's adoptive parents, who also ran the orphanage he grew up in.
• Off with His Head!: At the end of Volume 7, Liala decapitates the remaining Demon Council members to a well-deserved Karmic Death in revenge for trying to harm Leohart and attempt a genocide in the Demon Realm.
• Oh, Crap!:
  • Basara when Mio is about to scream as he is leaving the bathroom she is using at the beginning of the series.
  • Both Maria and Mio when they find out Basara isn't just a normal human when they attempt to trick him into leaving his house.
  • Maria has this look in episode 2 after Mio has a word with her regarding the latter's curse.
  • Zest when Zolgia is going to kill her for her failures.
  • Zolgia when he realizes that Lars is going to kill him.
• Older Than She Looks: Maria claims to be an adult, and shows Basara an ID card (possibly fake) stating it. However, he wonders if it would really work as she looks much younger than him.
  • Maria's mother Shella looks the same age as her daughter, causing Basara to mistake her for Maria's sister at first.
• The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Lars hated Zolgia all along because Mio's foster parents whom Zolgia killed were also the beloved caretakers of the orphanage where Lars grew up. Lars's only request for his help in rescuing Mio and Maria from Zolgia was for Basara to deliver Zolgia to him so that he could kill him personally.
• Out with a Bang: Demon Council member Belphegor is seen having sex with a female demon until she becomes blank-eyed, immobile, and unresponsive, at which point he discards her on the bed next to several other demons in a similar state because she's "spent". If there was any question as to their (lack of) liveliness, he then waves his hands and the demons evaporate into glowing white mist.
• Patient Childhood Love Interest: Yuki towards Basara. However, she's not passive, and instead tries to woo him every chance she gets. Unfortunately Mio does what she can to interrupt any opportunities the former tries to gain.
• Parental Abandonment:
  • Mio's parents were killed prior to the series starting.
  • Basara's mother died before the show starts, and his father leaves for a trip shortly after Mio and Maria move in.
• Pay Evil unto Evil:
  • At the end of episode 12, Lars kills Zolgia for his actions towards Mio's parents and his caretakers.
  • Liala sends Madonis and the rest of the Demon Council to a Karmic Death at the conclusion of Burst/Volume 7 in retaliation for causing chaos in the Demon Realm and especially Leoheart.
• The Plan:
  • Basara's father Jin getting remarried and adopting Mio and Maria into the family. He tells his son that he's been keeping an eye on the two girls due to the Hero village suddenly taking an interest in her, and because he wanted to be able to protect them from the new demon lord's minions who wanted the power Mio inherited. Basara doesn't question it as he trusts his father's judgment and reasoning, and takes over the role of protecting the two girls while his father goes out to do some research on what's going on regarding the demons and hero village.
  • Basara attempts one in episode 10 to rescue Mio by having Lars bring him to where she was being held at, as if he defeated Basar]. It almost works, but a new problem emerges after Zolgia initiates his Salt the Earth contingency.
• Polyamory: Basara and his harem, at least by the end of Burst/Volume 7 when the continued harem arrangement is made official.
  • Not only are all the females devoted to Basara (and vice versa), there's the beginnings of a relationship between Maria and Kurumi.
• Power Incontinence: Mio suffers this in episode 4, and is unable to shut off her power.
• Power Limiter: The keyhole necklace Maria wears seals her true power as a succubus. In episode 10 she releases it, and turns into a grown adult with a very voluptuous body in an attempt to seduce Basara under Zolgia's orders.
• Power Perversion Potential: Maria's mother Shella has the power to teleport, which she uses to extract Basara from a potentially catastrophic fight. She also uses it to teleport onto Basara's lap, and to help him crash a succubus punishment ritual which of course winds up with him delivering said punishment to Maria: a sexually charged spanking. Not that we should be surprised that Shella uses her powers in a perverted way, since she is a succubus.
• Punched Across the Room:
  • Basara and Maria get hit with this in some of the fights they have against both heroes and demons.
  • Basara suffers this from Maria in episode 10. Judging by the huge dent in the wall, he seems to have sustained some heavy hits.
  • The demon Admirath takes a punch from Maria that knocks him not just across the room, but out of the building and several blocks away. This after he lost both hands to Maria and Kurumi.
• Questionable Consent: Almost anything relating to the Master-Servant pact or succubus-induced lust:
  • Mio and Basara's entire relationship is dripping in this, since Mio didn't intend to be the servant in their Master-Servant pact, but now that it's done Basara is literally the only person who can provide sexual relief if the pact's curse activates on her. The fact that the pact wasn't reversed at the next full moon would seem to indicate eventual consent, but the circumstances by then weren't the most pressure-free environment for Mio to make a decision in.
    • The light novels make this consent explicit, with Mio expressing her continued interest in being in the pact with Basara several times.
  • Yuki and Basara's pact is more straightforwardly consensual since Yuki has to insist on it several times, but it's strongly implied she only wants it because she fears she'll lose Basara otherwise.
  • Any activation of the pact's curse raises all kinds of questions about consent, and consenting now to non-consent later: the cursed party has literally no choice but to submit to Basara (other than eventual insanity/death), but the possibility that this will happen is pretty clearly disclosed up front.
  • Kurumi seems to be a magnet for questionable uses of "succubus baptism", first from Maria in episode 1, then later from her sister Lucia as punishment for eavesdropping. That's not even getting into Maria almost openly calling Kurumi "my toy", a sentiment that is not returned with great enthusiasm (but not denied, either).
• Realpolitik: Comes from all factions. As a whole, the demons don't really care about humanity one way or another, humans just happen to be in the way of their hostility with the heavenly realm. The heroes only cares about protecting humankind as a whole, or rather, the planet humans happen to live on, and find it easier to both exile Basara for the rampage caused by one of their own, and Basara's own power understandably going out of control while trying to defend himself, as well as attempting to kill Mio, who's a complete innocent, rather than deal with the demons hunting her to try and steal her power because they believe that if Mio wasn't around, the demons would have no reason to come to Earth... until Jin gives them a phone call. As for the celestial realm? It seems they're just hanging back and seeing how humanity deals with the Demons first.
• Reasonable Authority Figure:
  • Chisato Hasegawa is always willing to listen to Basara and his friends. She also keeps both human and non-humans in check while in the school.
  • Despite his initial plans to extract Mio's demon power, Ramsus is very sound in judgment and is always willing to listen to Basara and his allies, including Jin.
• Refusal of the Call: Basara kicks Mio and Maria out after finding out they're demons, because they tried to brainwash him and his father. However, after his father explains the situation the girls were in to him, he changes his mind and decides to protect them.
• Relative Button: The main characters are all explicitly family to one another, either by blood, marriage (or close enough to it), or both. Messing with one of them will get the rest on your case like nothing else. Some of the antagonists are far too arrogant and cocky to realize the implications, while others try to exploit it only to have it backfire spectacularly.
• Reluctant Fanservice Girl:
  • Mio. Aside from teasing him on his bed in the first episode, she clearly seems uncomfortable being seen with little or no clothing on around Basara, even after she decides she enjoys being in the Master-Servant pact with Basara.
  • Later, Kurumi, especially whenever Maria is involved. Doubly especially when Maria brings up how much Kurumi likes having her armpits licked.
• Rubber Face: Maria is subjected to this from time to time by Mio and Basara.
• Salt the Earth: Zolgia "builds" his castle out of an all-consuming creature that will devour the entire planet if his power is not present to keep it in check. The Demon Council tries the same at the end of Burst to ensure their victory and hide all evidence of their guilt, until Liala objects quite strongly.
• School Festival: One occurs during episode 2 of Burst.
• Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After the battle between the heroes and Basara, Yuki and Kurumi decide to abandon the Hero Tribe altogether.
• Sequel Hook: The end of episode 12 shows scenes from the next season, with a release date of October 2015.
• Sex Slave: Zest would actually like to be one for a younger Master, but can't because if she ever has sex she will lose her powers forever.
• Sexual Extortion: Completely averted with Basara, amazingly, despite the ample opportunities he has to do so via the Master-Servant pact. If anything, the members of his harem have to pressure him to make use of it. For other characters, like Maria and Chisato, it's played completely straight.
• Sexy Discretion Shot: Used heavily in the anime series, though only as often as not. Numerous not-precisely-sex activities are built up to but never seen, particularly many of the (implied) not-quite-orgies between Basara and his harem. Plenty of other specific encounters are shown well past what anyone would call "discretion", however.
• Shameless Fanservice Girl:
  • Maria, being a succubus, tends to tease Basara quite a bit. She also attempts to show Yuki a video of Basara "training" Mio in episode 8.
  • Yuki seems okay with being in just a towel, and later naked around Basara in his bathroom in episode 5. And after watching bits of said video Maria showed her in episode 8, she takes off her shirt, and says she wants Basara to "train" her the same way. And unlike Mio, she eagerly wants to perform the Master-Servant pact with him.
  • Zest considers herself fully available to Basara however he wants her, perverted intent or not, and has no reservations or shame about doing so, at least after she enters into the Master-Servant pact with him.
  • Chisato is the most forward of Basara's harem. Two of the OVAs show she's comfortable being undressed, of fully nude around him, and she's usually the one who initiates foreplay. The light novels go further by having her lose her virginity via double penetration .
• Shipper on Deck: Maria for Basara and Mio. Later, Maria's mother Shella, very strongly wants Basara + Zest, and with good reason.
• Shoo the Dog: Mio and Maria attempt to shoo Basara out in episode 1, only for Basara to force them out of the house after revealing his Hero lineage. It doesn't last long, however, and Basara is forced to rescue them.
• Shown Their Work: Whether by accident, or by design, the author is correct in that numerous religions, and quite a few cults in reality do have magic rituals that are highly sexualized. Master-servant spiritual or "demonic" pacts being at the top of the list. Such pacts are clearly an integral part of the story.
• Shut Up, Hannibal!: Mio calls out Takashi when the latter mocks Basara about his feelings when he unintentionally destroyed their village for the umpteenth time.
• Shut Up, Kirk!: When Basara tells him that he isn't a coward due to his exile, Takashi just tells him to shove it as he continues to fight.
• Slave Collar: Whenever the Master-Servant pact activates its "curse" on a non-compliant servant, a glowing band of color resembling a collar shows up on the servant's neck. The band only goes away once the servant "submits" to their Master. In the case of Basara's harem that almost always involves orgasms.
• Status Quo Is God: Enforced in episode 8, when Yuki tells Basara the hero village is observing Mio again due to a change of events, after originally attempting to kill her back in episode 7. She tells him they want to act as if the previous event never took place.
• The Stinger: At the end of episode 12, the current demon lord is shown wondering about what happened to Zolgia. He then goes to his throne room to find Jin Toujou, Basara's father, sitting on his throne and wishing to return the favor for the demon lord attempting to harm Basara and Mio.
• Stop Hitting Yourself: Admirath gets his own dismembered hand thrown at him fairly hard just before Maria punches him through the building and a few blocks away.
• Stupid Evil: The primary threat the antagonists face to their plans is not the protagonists, but their own smug, arrogant, dog-kicking idiocy.
• Succubi and Incubi: Maria is a succubus, and isn't shy at all about encouraging lewd behavior in the household. Or at school given the opportunity such as in episode 8.
• Superpower Meltdown: A pill that Maria's mother gives to Basara to help him unleash his powers in episode 9 of Burst suddenly gives him a tremendous advantage over the demon lord. Unfortunately the power takes its toll on his body and mind as well, and parts of his limbs spurt blood due to the tremendous stress placed on them, along with his hidden power devouring his mind before Mio rescues him.
• Supreme Chef: In volume 4, it is revealed that everyone in the Tōjō household can cook, and quite well, with Maria being the best. Although not a mamber at that point, Chisato is noted by Basara to be an even better chef after serving him a meal composed of numerous dishes both local and foreign, and he enjoys the taste so much that he can't stop until it's all eaten, despite being way too much for a single person.
• Suspiciously Specific Denial:
  • In episode 2, Maria claims that she didn't make Mio the servant in the Master-Servant pact because she wanted to watch the latter squirm with pleasure.
  • In episode 6, Mio claims she just happened to coincidentally see Basara and Yuki at the mall together. And that she totally wasn't spying on them or anything like that.
• Tap on the Head: Basara does this to Takigawa in episode 3 after some demons show up at school, likely because he was a Muggle and Basara didn't want him finding out about Mio being a demon lord's daughter. However, it turns out that Takigawa is actually Lars, a demon who is actually quite Genre Savvy about what's going on.
• Take a Third Option:
  • Basara does this in episode 4 after Mio suffers Power Incontinence. She begs for a Mercy Kill before her power devastates the surrounding land, but he banishes her power instead.
  • He also gives Lars in episode 4 An Offer You Can't Refuse, rather than outright killing the guy.
  • The heroes temporarily retract the order to kill Mio after Basara defeats them in episode 7. And in episode 8, the hero village reverts back to making Mio an observation target, giving Yuki a convenient excuse to move into their household.
  • Basara offers this to Maria in episode 10, vowing to help her rescue her mother, after Maria is forced to seduce him and put him under Zolgia's control.
  • Maria kisses Basara at the conclusion of volume 3 rather than take Yuki's or Mio's side regarding Basara. This doesn't make either girl very happy with the newfound rival.
  • Rather than letting either the Moderate faction or Demon Lord faction win the tournament to decide the outcome of the civil war, Basara winds up convincing them to work together to defeat Chaos, though admittedly this wasn't part of his original plan.
• Taking the Bullet: Basara intercepts an attack intended for Mio at the end of episode 3.
• Talking in Your Sleep:
  • Basara does this during episode 7 while lying on Kurumi's lap. She finds out he's not happy for accidentally killing many people five years back at the hero village.
  • In the first OVA, Maria is drawn to look into Mio's dream after hearing the latter murmuring Basara's name. Turns out it was an erotic dream, alright.
• The Tease: Maria loves to do this to Basara.
• Teacher/Student Romance: Done in the OVA, when Chisato brings Basara to her apartment for a home-cooked meal. She then starts asking him to do some inappropriate things, such as holding her from behind in a hug. Later in the bathroom they pretty much engage in various sex acts, though the original intention was to wash her perfume off his body and clothing lest he invokes the wrath of Yuki and Mio when he went home later. And unlike some other instances where scenes like this were imagine spots, this one actually happened. Due to clever wording on Chisato's half, Basara is left thinking it didn't actually happen.
• Technical Virgin: Mio and a few other characters can't have sex without risk of losing their powers forever, but that apparently doesn't apply to any number of decidedly X-rated activities which lead to people having orgasms.
• Their First Time: The anime strongly implies that Basara and Mio have sex in the shower the night before the tournament.
• They Died Because of You: Basara Tojo is indirectly responsible for causing the massacre at the Hero Village.
• Training from Hell: Basara delves into his training while part of the hero clan in episode 4. He says they're trained how to fight while they're still young.
• Transformation Sequence: Yuki has one in episode 4.
• Traumatic Superpower Awakening: Used twice in episode 4:
  • Basara seems ashamed of what happened to himself while he was still part of the hero clan. A power awakens inside of him that leaves a huge crater on the side of a mountain in order to protect Yuki from a crazed man who stole the demon sword Brynhildr. Though he killed the attacker, he inadvertently killed several of his friends and went into exile.
  • Mio goes through this after Basara gets stabbed in episode 4. Her powers awaken but she's unable to control it, and begs Basara for a Mercy Kill. He instead decides to save her by banishing her power instead.
    • Her power returns in episode 11, and this time around she seems to be able to control it. Zolgia even develops and Oh, Crap! look on his face, and were it not for Basara reasoning with her to not kill him, she probably would have done it.
  • After having his arm cut off, Brynhildr, Basara's sword, awakens a previously unknown power that lets him reattach his arm and cut off parts of an actual angel's body.
• Tyrannicide: Basara kills Belphegor and Liala kills off the rest of the Demon Council. Their deaths signify the end of the council's corruption and restore peace to the demon realm.
• Ungrateful Bastard:
  • Basara saved the hero clan from the Brynhildr disaster, but he was banished because, understandably, his powers went out of control and killed some of the clan while he was wresting an Artifact of Doom from someone who definitely was going to kill everyone in the village and beyond with it.
  • After the events of Burst, the hero clan summons Basara back to the village for punishment, rather than give thanks that Basara stopped a massive Demon invasion led by the warmongering Council and their pet "Chaos."
• Unskilled, but Strong: Mio inherited a tremendous amount of demonic power from her father, but she's been aware of it for less than a year and isn't particularly adept at using it.
• Unwanted Harem: Basara doesn't seem too interested in the girls, but they all show some in him.
  • Averted by the end of Volume 7, where Basara is pretty explicit about how much he loves each of his adoptive "sisters".
• Unwitting Instigator of Doom: The hero clan member who stole Brynhildr doomed most of his fellow clan members. Basara's use of Banishing Shift to protect the clan resulting in the deaths of most of his friends didn't help matters either.
• Virgin Power: Mio's powers may only last until she has sex for the first time, but since this series gets decidedly erotic there appear to be several generous loopholes. Zest suffers from the same restriction, except (at least in the light novel series) there's no question that she will lose her powers.
  • More specifically, the Master-Servant Contract's power boost is lost if they have sex; however, once they are able to achieve maximum trust and loyalty and upgrade to a "Master-Servant Vow", this weakness disappears.
• What the Hell, Hero?:
  • Jin gives a few of these to the village elders. The first, concerning Basara's exile from his home after the massacre at the Hero village gets him exiled too. The second... well, let's just say something he told them convinced them that attacking Mio was a bad idea and that they should consider everything relating to the order making her a "termination" target "never happened."
  • Yuki attempts to warn Basara to stay away from Mio in episode 3. He refuses, stating she was family and he chose to protect her. She then confronts Mio, who also likewise refuses to sever her bond with Basara. He then calls Yuki out on this when he sees them fighting on the rooftop.
  • In the second half of volume 1, Takashi doesn't hesitate to point out that Basara's involvement in the massacre at the Hero village understandably killed several innocent people, which ultimately led to his exile. By the conclusion of his battle with Basara, Takashi ends up on the receiving end of this trope when Mio calls him out for mocking Basara's true feelings.
  • In Volume 5, Shella gives a major one to Rukia and Ramsus for threatening Basara because the latter called Ramsus on his plans to extract Mio's powers, although Rukia and Ramsus are unfazed. Later, she lectures Rukia again for attempting to rape Kurumi, as well as Basara for leaving Zest in a truly untenuous situation, until she's made aware that Basara himself has no objections to Zest becoming his servant, and was only waiting for informed consent from both his harem, and Zest herself, as well as the next full moon.
• Word Salad Title: The official English name seems a little off when strung together.
• Worf Barrage:
  • Basara does this to the masked assailant Lars in episode 4. Like the trope implies, it doesn't work. Though he defeats the masked man, Takigawa shows up at school and feigns ignorance at what happened to Mio.
  • Basara does this again during his duel with the demon lord in episode 9 of Burst. He seems to continually have the upper hand, but they ultimately just turn out to be a Hope Spot, as the demon lord learned of his attacks from one of his minions during an earlier fight with Basara.
• Worthy Opponent: Basara helps the demon lord up after their duel and being saved by Mio before suffering a complete Superpower Meltdown. They seem somewhat friendly towards each other despite having just fought a death match against each other moments earlier. Said moment is cut short when some of the demon lord's nobles summon Chaos, an Eldritch Abomination, which shows up and attacks the three.
• Yank the Dog's Chain: Even though Basara saves the Demon Realm from Chaos and the Demon Council, he is summoned back to the village for punishment.
• You Can't Go Home Again: Basara and Jin can't return the village due to their exile.
• You Kill It, You Bought It: Basara and his friends, along with Liala, do away with the Demon Council, the old establishment, and they usher in a new era of peace in the Demon Realm.
• You Killed My Father: One of Mio's reasons for hating Zolgia. Lars has a similar grudge, since Mio's foster parents whom Zolgia killed were the caretakers of the orphanage where Lars was raised.
• Your Head Asplode: Lars kills Zolgia this way at the end of episode 12.
