Have you ever wonder what it would be like to jump into a video game? To be in your favorite character's footsteps and experience their adventure first-hand? I was one of those kids, the ones that always had problems keeping fiction from spilling into reality. I had always imagined what it would be like to jump high like Mario, to run fast like Sonic or to have Kirby's ability to copy anything that he swallowed. As always, I believed these would stay as dreams. But after what had happened that day, it had proved ua famous saying: Nothing is impossible...

— The opening paragraph

Sucked Into The Smash Universe is a fanfic set in the Super Smash Bros. universe. The story is written by Kooper Shellington which follows four otherworldly heroes as they help Master Hand and the Smashers fight off a new threat that rose from the depths of Sub-Space. These four heroes are Kimani, a short anger-prone teen with a knack for video game knowledge, Jordan, a cynical big guy with an even bigger heart, Austin, the voice of reason and the youngest (despite his facial hair) and Dylan, the happy-go-lucky teen that is rarely seen without a smile on. This fic was first posted on February 4th, 2014 and was marked as completed on December 2nd, 2023.

The first episode can be read here.

     A-C
  • A Rare Sentence: Kimani utters one at one point, commenting on the weirdness of it seconds after.
Kimani: "Well I can clearly say that I have stared a Raquazza in the face and lived.... hmm... Never thought I would say that..."
  • Acoustic License: No matter the battle, the heroes seem to be able to hear each other without fail.
    • The Sub-Space Army gets in on this as well at moments
  • Acro Fatic: Despite his size, Jordan is capable of keeping up with his smaller companions when the time calls for it
  • And Mission Control Rejoiced: Master and Crazy are impressed when Kimani pulls off a rather clever series of moves in the beginning battle.
  • Artistic License – Biology: Lampshaded by the fact that the heroes Wii-Motes grant them increased durability and strength, allowing them to perform feats impossible for the normal human as well as surviving lethal hits.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Dylan's Ion Beam. It's strong, has a forgiving hitbox, and is capable of one-shotting or at least heavily damaging whoever is hit by it. It also takes a moment to charge, leaves Dylan defenseless during the charge, and even after the attack is fired, Dylan is instantly Exhausted after doing so.
    • By extension, Death Beam. It keeps the same problems with Ion Beam but Kimani is also defenseless during start-up and is also Exhausted afterward.
  • Badass Adorable: Smaller Smashers such as Pikachu, Kirby, and Toon Link are more than capable of kicking ass.
  • Badass Fingersnap: This is Master and Crazy's way of activating their powers. As they are Giant Floating Hands normally, this rule transfers to their human forms as well.
    • Johnson and Dave have one attack each that requires them to snap in order to activate it.
    • Austin's Final Smash involves him and his party moving at a breakneck pace. At the end, Austin snaps his fingers, causing pre-fired arrows to strike their target.
  • Blade Lock: This happens constantly throughout the story.
    • Despite not having a sword, Ratchet uses his wrench against Dice, causing this to happen at one point.
  • Banana Peel: Ike almost slips on one during a baking session with Crazy, DK and Dylan.
    • DK slips on it once everyone chases Crazy in frustration however
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Kimani's weapon of choice is his bare fist and feet augmented with aura surrounding them.
    • This becomes moot when he steals Headshot's rifle and has Master add it to his arsenal.
  • Bargain with Heaven: The heroes attempt to persuade the Star Spirits to resurrect Jordan after his "game ends." They end up gaining the Revive ability, which allows them to revive each other collectively three times.
  • Bash Brothers: All four of the heroes are prone to this as they've been friends forever, but special mentions go to Jordan and Kimani, who will use each other to aid their attacks in some way such as Jordan hurling Kimani at an out of reach foe or Kimani using Jordan as a shield.
    • Kirby, Meta Knight and King Dedede also show high levels of teamwork in Jail Break.
  • Battle Aura: Ganondorf sports this during his battle with the heroes once he gets pushed enough.
    • Jordan's Defensive Shout ability gives his allies within earshot a blue aura around them.
  • Battle Boomerang: The Boom Primid's weapon of choice.
    • Both of the Links possess Boomerangs as well.
  • Bear Hug: This is Dylan's main method of showing affection, much to the displeasure of the smaller Kimani.
    • DK is also a well-known giver of these as well.
    • Tusk gives one to Jeff, Dave and Johnson.
  • Berserk Button: Comment on Kimani's height in any way and he's bound to flip out in response.
    • Dylan cares deeply about their friends and will lose it if they're in serious danger.
    • Jeff will lose his cool should anyone mention Tabuu in a bad way.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Dylan is a goofball and sometimes doesn't show urgency during battles but he's still just as dangerous as his friends. Crazy is also extremely dangerous, but extremely aloof.
    • Kimani lampshades this once he realizes that out of all of them, Dylan got the more destructive Final Smash.
  • Big "NO!": The heroes get one when Kimani gets kidnapped by the Sub-Space Army.
  • Big, Stupid Doodoo-Head: Kimani and Firebrand get into an argument that has them slowly switch to more outdated insults such as "up your nose with a rubber hose" and "poopyhead"
  • Billions of Buttons: The space station in Space Situation has various buttons that seem excessive.
    • However, Dylan constantly keeps pressing the right buttons, much to the surprise of his companions.
  • Bilingual Dialogue: Many characters such as DK, Diddy, and Kirby can't speak English but the Smashers can understand them perfectly.
    • Red can understand his Pokémon with ease.
    • Firebrand can understand many of the Smashers that can't speak English, much to the annoyance of Kimani, who can't.
    • Subverted with the heroes, who can't understand any character that doesn't speak English.
      • This becomes moot however when the heroes are granted translator chips on their visit to Mute City
    • Rosalina can understand her Lumas, despite the fact that they don't speak English besides Polari and Lubba.
    • Master Hand can understand a plethora of languages. Even rare ones such as Firebrand's Draconic.
    • Olimar can understand his Pikmin easily, despite not speaking and the Pikmin can understand Olimar's commands via whistle.
  • Blinded by Rage: Jordan becomes this once Kimani gets kidnapped however, he was sent to the Smash Room in order to vent his frustration. Typhoon eventually calms him down after a heart-to-heart.
    • Prime falls victim to this by Crazy, giving the others time to catch him off guard and free Bowser.
    • After a raiding party claimed his wife and kid, Typhoon became this, easily wiping out the remaining raiders.
  • Boxing Lessons for Superman: The Heroes, being Ordinary High School Students, understandably don't entirely know how to fight and defend themselves as effectively as they potentially can. Eventually, their weapons give them personalized training in their respective fields, making them way better in combat.
    • Matt assists the heroes in giving them crash courses in various parts of fighting such as Striking, Blocking, and Dodging. He goes more in-depth with each hero afterward.
      • Kimani, being mostly close range, learns not only Firebrand's unique fighting style but Matt's lessons also allow him to Enter The Zone, increasing his speed, power, and defense should he land enough hits without being hit himself along with a few other nice bonuses.
      • Jordan's defensive nature gets a boost from Matt's lessons as well. Not only does his shield grow stronger, but he can even turn it into a flat disk that sits on his arm, allowing for the guarding of stronger moves, and he can also project his shield onto his allies and even expand his shield into a giant dome. Typhoon even gives him a few pointers with his weapon, causing him to actually wield it rather than swing it haphazardly.
      • Austin's training with Venom, Ebony and Ivory increases his general nimbleness and stealthiness. With the help of Matt, he even unlocks his own Thief Lights, a special visual effect only Austin can see. These helpful lights not only show him the trajectory of incoming attacks sometimes, but they also highlight weak spots on enemies should he observe them long enough and they will point out strong foes that can see through his Stealth ability. This is on top of their natural ability to point out climbable surfaces, hiding spots, and secret entrances.
      • Dylan's training causes his already unorthodox abilities to evolve, allowing him to use his friend's fighting styles on the fly, store an enemy's style for future use and even allow him to store a surplus of electricity within him, allowing him to enhance his next ability usage. Master even creates an Upgrade Disk for Alpha, enhancing his Copycat ability and allowing him to Digistruct stronger forms of whoever Dylan copies.

  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Toon Link does this by referring to Chapter 10 once he asks Jordan about the whereabouts of Kimani.
    • Dylan does this as well by mentioning he "has no lines" at one point.
    • Master looks at the camera and shushes the audience in An Inside Operation, confusing Austin, who sees this. He even gives them a wink.
    • Dylan and Toon Link do this again when they try and figure out how many chapters they've stayed awake for. Master calls them out on this afterward.
  • Calling Your Attacks: Everyone that has a special move is prone to doing this. Not even Master and Crazy are exempt from this.
    • This is lampshaded by Dave when Johnson asks him about the name of one move. Jeff counters that "names have power,"
  • Can Only Move the Eyes: Jordan, Austin, and Dylan become a victim of this when Lucas freezes them in a block of ice to keep them from fighting.
  • Cards of Power: Jeff not only wields a variation of a Sub-Sword but also magical playing cards that have various effects.
  • Cast from Stamina: The heroes use their own energy when performing special attacks and can become exhausted if they use too many in a row.
    • Jeff and Slice's Brink ability uses up energy and can exhaust their users should they Brink too many times.
  • Casual Danger Dialogue: This. A lot of this. It's fair to assume in every battle that happens, the heroes (and villains) will still hold conversations and arguments.
    • Red lampshades this by asking Mario if it was common for the heroes to talk during battle. Mario tells him that it would be weird if they didn't.
  • Cat Ninja: Ebony is a Caracal that is well versed in stealth.
  • Censored for Comedy: Usually, the F-word is censored whenever a character is saying it.
    • Subverted a few times when a character is really serious to the point where they break past the censorship. Firebrand and Jeff are the only ones that have done this, both of who were pushed to their limits.
  • Chandelier Swing: While not a chandelier, Kimani pulls this off in order to get the drop on Porky.
  • Character Class System: The heroes' powers are portrayed as different "classes"
    • Kimani's style is akin to a Monk or Brawler, classes that specialize in hand-to-hand combat.
    • Jordan's style is similar to a Berserker, a class that can take a beating and dish one out in return.
    • Austin's style is a typical Thief, a class that specializes in sneak attacks and hitting foes in weak spots.
    • Dylan subverts this as his class, Doppelganger, specializes in copying other styles.
  • Charged Attack: Characters such as Samus, Lucario, and King Dedede can charge their attacks in order to deal more damage or hit a bigger area.
    • Kimani and Dylan joins this with Focus Blast and Ion Beam respectively.
  • Choice of Two Weapons: Austin has access to both dual daggers as well as a bow once he receives his powers.
    • Kimani is also this when Master adds a stolen rifle to his remote.
    • Dylan is able to copy whoever he looks at with his goggles.
  • Color-Coded Elements: Kimani, Jordan, and Austin all have elemental powers that match their Wii-Mote colors. Dylan is the only one that doesn't follow this rule.
  • Comical Angry Face: Kimani's facial expressions tend to be more than humorous when he gets angry. This is enhanced by the universe they're in, which allows them to sometimes gain cartoonish effects such as sweatdrops, visible veins, and the occasional head growth.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Venom is not against fighting unfairly. Being a half-blind Vulture that lost the ability to fly, this is understandable.
    • Kimani also uses underhand tactics every now and then. Should he know an enemy's weakness, he'll exploit it fully. His normal fighting style revolves around this as well. He'll go for someone's eyes, clap his hands on their ears to disorient them, and happily kick anyone on the ground should they still be on the ground. Should he really be desperate, he'll even use low blows if he really has to and even bite.
    • Venom also coaxes Austin to follow suit. Being one of the weaker members health and attack-wise, Austin's game plan revolves around this as he doesn't have the power to fight fairly. His abilities and powers revolve around this as he can turn invisible, throw poison, shoot arrows, and even summon vines to bind and hold foes in place. He even does more damage if he backstabs
  • Consistent Clothing Style: Each of the heroes has their own style of clothing.
    • Kimani is always seen with a jacket and jeans on. His jackets range from solid-colored ones to full-on novelty ones.
    • Jordan usually wears a T-shirt and pants. On colder missions, he'll have his Harley Davis jacket on as well. He does occasionally wear shorts, however.
    • Austin is usually seen in nicer clothes such as khakis and flannel shirts. He also wears boots as well.
    • Dylan is regularly seen in t-shirts and rugged jeans.
  • Critical Status Buff: Kimani, Jordan, and Austin gain this briefly when they're changed into Pokemon and get to low health, triggering Overgrowth, Overheat, and Torrent.
    • Firebrand doesn't receive the ability to exist outside the Wii-Mote until Kimani is at Death's Door and is almost killed.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Kimani vs Groudon. He does get a few good hits in, however.
    • The Leader vs Kimani and Jeff also falls under this. They fail to land any lasting damage and this is before the unveiling of Tabuu's wings.
    • A lesser example being Typhoon vs Matt. The battle lasted for almost 5 seconds...

     D-G
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: Jeff's Ace card is to never be used unless he has no other options left.
    • Fire Primids can use Supernova, an attack of mass destruction that affects a large area around them. However, it wipes them from existence.
  • Dark Is Evil: The Sub-Space Army.
  • Damager, Healer, Tank: Jordan's natural toughness as well as his abilities makes him the ideal tank, Kimani and Austin are more suited for damage dealing while Dylan's abilities mostly support his friends. He's also the only person that can restore health.
  • Deadly Gas: Austin is able to throw down poisonous smoke bombs to poison nearby foes.
    • Porky's gas is apparently so nasty that it can poison whoever smells it.
  • Deadly Gaze: Tusk can glare at people and inflict them with Fear. He does this against Jordan to stop him from activating Defensive Shout.
  • Deadpan Snarker: There are a few.
    • Venom is the king of this, spewing sarcastic lines almost every second. Kimani and Firebrand also have their moments as well.
    • Jeff is the Sub-Space equivalent but Johnson and Headshot are worthy runner-ups.
    • A Primid named Zack apparently has a degree in sarcasm.
    • This is Bowser's default way of talking to people he doesn't like
  • Deadly Dodging: When dodged, Giant Primids have a knack for hitting their allies. Prime does this various times when trying to hit the heroes.
    • Epsilon promptly punches a Space Pirate in the face when he aimed at a hero and even nuked two more when they avoided his back cannons.
      • Dylan pulls off a clever move utilizing this. When being tailed by a cloaked enemy, Dylan antagonizes Kimani, which causes him to swing. Dylan dodges the blow, causing the cloaked enemy to get hit instead.
      • Kimani uses Grodon's Ancient Power against him by dodging through the attack.
  • Death Glare: Jordan is known to throw these out, stopping even people like Kimani from testing him.
    • Kimani also uses these as well, but his aren't as effective as Jordan's due to always being angry.
    • Samus is also a worthy contender as well. Bowser joins her also.
  • Death Is Not Permanent: Should a hero fall, they can be revived by others, but only up to three times.
    • Primids don't die. They simply lose their forms and are revived in the Sub-Space Halberd or the base.
  • Decoy Damsel: The heroes fall for this in Chapter 17.
  • Defeated and Trophified: Taken to a new level as defeated Smashers are turned into trophies rather than dying.
  • Deus ex Machina: Firebrand coming to Kimani's rescue in Chapter 25.
    • Kimani lampshades this when they lose anyway.
Kimani: "What kind of deus ex machina... appears... just to get his ass kicked?"

    • The Pyramid in Chapter 5 is a reference to the one Mario finds in Paper Mario. It's even opened the same way.
    • Peach's magic is a direct reference to her moves in Super Mario RPG.
    • In Chapter 7, Mario throws his hands up, triggering his Flip ability. This was his main power in Super Paper Mario which allowed him to flip from 2-D to 3-D. According to Mario, it works in reverse.
    • Chapter 8 has Mario and Bowser get into an argument, which has Bowser yell something about his "multi-colored pills." This, along with the following conversation is a reference to this video
    • The same chapter as above has Jordan and Toon Link warp to the wrong place. This place is Toon Link's world. More specifically, Outset Island from Wind Waker.
    • In Chapter 9, Crazy briefly sings a song in order to wake everyone up. While the lyrics are slightly altered, the song is a reference to T-Pain's 5 O'Clock.
    • In the same chapter, Dylan and Kimani use an insult that's a reference to Monty Python
    • Chapter 11's title is a reference to the game, Castle Crashers
    • In the same chapter, Kimani names one of Dylan's forms, Ar-lan. This is a reference to King of the Hill. Even Jordan catches this.
    • In Chapter 12, Ganondorf uses a few moves from his boss fight in Ocarina of Time.
    • Chapter 13 shows the heroes earning more moves to use. Dylan's D-Down Beam is a variation of the D-Down Pound attack from Paper Mario Rather than pierce defense, like the badge counterpart, the beam lowers the defense of whoever gets hit.
    • In Chapter 15, Austin delivers a line from Scarface before he guns down Dylan with Yoshi acting like a machine gun.
Austin "Say hello to my little friend!"

    • Duncan is a Twin-Boom Primid which allows him to use two Sub-merangs at once.
    • Tusk is a Juggernaut, a heavily armored version of a Giant Primid.
    • Jeff is a Joker Primid, an exclusive Primid that has access to various card and luck-based attacks.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Kimani doesn't take too kindly to any nickname based on his height
    • Dylan's nickname for Jordan is Stay Puff, in reference to the ghost from Ghostbusters. Jordan, understandably, takes offense to this.
    • Austin gets annoyed whenever anyone calls him "Bushy" in reference to his facial hair. "Auzzy" is another nickname that embarrasses him.
    • Samus gets called "Sammy" by Kirby in Chapter 17. She gives a Death Glare at everyone else in advance, causing everyone to suddenly become interested in the passing birds.
  • Enemy Scan: Dylan's Scan ability can inform others about a target's info as well as the moves they can produce. It even tells weaknesses and strategies against them.
  • Equippable Ally: Austin does this with Yoshi against Dylan during their shootout.
  • Face Palm: Everyone does this at least once but Kimani and Jordan do it the most in response to Dylan's antics.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Ganondorf does this, joining the Sub-Space Army once Master and the Smashers get wiped out the first time.
  • Fast Ball Special: Jordan does this with Austin at one point, turning him into a makeshift arrow.
    • He also does this various times with Kimani.
    • DK also throws Kimani at one point toward some out-of-reach enemies.
  • Feather Fingers: Venom can use his wings as normal hands. It's how he fires his bow normally. He's capable of using his talons however should his wings be preoccupied with flying or anything else.
  • Fish out of Water: After explaining exactly how they arrived in the Smash Universe, Roy asks if Tv's normally sucked people in. Roy then explains that he never figured out how to work Tvs due to not having them at home.
    • To a lesser extent, the Heroes. However, Master teaches them the basics of the world in order to avoid said confusion.
    • Typhoon doesn't understand the concept of Hide and Seek and has to have Jordan explain it to him.
    • A lot of the Smashers that came from more primitive/old fashion worlds would have also been confused when they first arrived.
    • Jeff, A Primid, understandably feels a bit out of place at the Smash Manor.
  • Foreign Cuss Word: Austin sometimes curses in Italian. Kimani picks up on this because he only knows the bad words in Italian.
    • Firebrand yells out "Karshoj!" once a clam bites down on his tail. Karshoj is Draconic for Fuck.
  • Fourth-Wall Observer: The heroes. As they've been sucked into Kimani's TV, they are aware that they are in a game.
    • Toon Link goes a step further by pointing out a chapter at one point. Firebrand joins him by muttering "I hope the readers enjoys all that text," at one point
    • Master is the biggest example of this as he shushes the audience while looking at them. He even winks.
  • Fragile Speedster: Austin, Ebony, and Ivory are the faster characters that rely on Hit-and-Run Tactics as well as various tricks in order to avoid taking damage. They have the lowest hit points out of everyone, however.
  • Fusion Dance: The heroes can perform a technique called Soul Synchronization, which allows them to merge their souls with their weapons. Not only do they undergo a costume change, but they gain the spirit's abilities and physical capabilities.
  • Funny Animal: Firebrand, Ebony, Ivory, and Venom are all animals that can speak English and walk on two legs.
  • Furry Reminder: Venom tends to squawk like a bird when he's surprised or hit. Makes sense as he's a Black Vulture.
  • Geas: Master and Crazy have a few rules placed on them due to their past crimes. One of them is that they can't forcefully teleport their selves into another realm without the owners' permission. They also can't warp reality past a certain degree. If they do, they'll cease to exist.
  • Genre Savvy: Having played various games, Kimani shows this at various times, commenting on various things and bringing up information about other characters before they can say anything.
    • Ness' love for Sci-Fi movies comes in handy in Space Situation
  • Gentle Giant: Despite their size, DK and King Dedede are some of the more friendly Smashers there.
    • Tusk is a Giant Armored Primid wearing black armor and he even has a jagged tooth sticking out of his mouth. Despite his frightening appearance, he's known to be the nicest Primid in the entire army.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Austin does this to Venom when he starts freaking out.
  • Giant Mook: The Giant Primids.
  • God's Hands Are Tied: Master informs the heroes that he and Crazy are on thin ice with the Ancients, which is why they need their help. Should they get too involved, they risk breaking their contract and will be terminated as a result.
    • This doesn't completely stop them from helping however but it does prevent them from flat out snapping the Sub-Space Army from existence.
  • Gravity Master: Ganondorf can use Gravity Magic, which is shown during his battle with the heroes in Chapter 12
    • Bowser mentions that he uses Gravity Magic in order to help him jump and unleash his Bowser Bomb attack. He can't change his gravity by much however and it can only affect himself.

     H-I
  • Hack Your Enemy: Johnson has a pair of goggles that allow him to tap into nearby electrical objects and tamper with them in various ways. While the heroes' weapons are safe from this, Samus and Fox are not and end up getting used against the heroes at one point.
  • Hammerspace: Certain characters such as the Links and Ness carry around a plethora of items on them and can pull them seemingly out of nowhere or out of places where they shouldn't fit.
    • The heroes can store things in their pockets due to the universe's effects on them.
  • Hand Blast: Kimani and Dylan can shoot elemental attacks out of their hands in the form of Fireballs and Lightning Bolts.
    • Master and Crazy can shoot energy beams out of their fingers by shaping their hands like guns.
    • Many of the Smashers have attacks that involve shooting energy out of their hands.
  • Handy Shortcoming: While he isn't proud of it, Kimani's smaller size allows him to dodge attacks easier than his friends at moments.
  • Harmful to Touch: Pure Subspace is extremely harmful to humans and can corrupt them should they come into contact with it.
    • Pure Phozon is also shown to be harmful to others except for beings with naturally high resistance to it.
  • Hat of Power: Mario and Luigi's hats make them stronger and they take more damage when dehatted.
  • Headlock of Dominance: Jordan frequently does this to his smaller companions in order to calm them down or stop them from doing something stupid. Kimani is the usual receiver of this.
  • Healing Shiv: Dylan can heal others by shocking them with his Jump Start ability.
  • Height Angst: Kimani is well aware of his lack of height and hates it when others point it out in any way.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Jeff joins the Smashers after realizing the Leader stole Tabuu's wings.
    • Dave and Johnson agree to help but they don't join the heroes directly.
  • Hurt Foot Hop: Subverted slightly. Matt whacks Dylan in the ankle, causing him to bring his foot up. When he smacks him in the other one, Dylan tried to pull that one as well. Obviously, this doesn't work and he falls over as a result.
  • Hit Points: The heroes all have 100 hit points which are shown on their Wii Motes via the lights on the bottom.
    • This gets increased after some training. Austin and Dylan have 125, Kimani has 175 and Jordan has a whopping 200
  • Honor Among Thieves: Venom, Ebony, and Ivory are thieves, however, they strictly go after corrupt targets or bad guys.
  • Horn Attack: A Rhydon attempts this multiple times against Diddy in the Mystery Dungeon
  • Horny Vikings: Typhoon is a bonafide Viking complete with the helm and traditional outfit and absolutely enjoys the thrill of combat.
  • How Many Fingers?: A variation. Master holds his fingers behind his back to make sure Crazy is alright at one point. Since he's magical, Crazy is able to correctly answer.
  • Hub Level: The Smash Manor
  • Human Chess: Done by Kyogre as part of Jordan's test.
  • Human Hummingbird: Kimani pulls this off when Jordan picks him up on one occasion.
  • Hyperventilation Bag: Jordan uses one to calm his nerves after a close shave involving the Sub-Space infused Kimani.
  • I Can Still Fight!: Kimani attempts to sway his companions once he's confined to bed rest after injuring himself. Jordan shuts this down, however.
  • Ignored Enemy: Petey gets ignored when the heroes start talking about Kimani's anger. He throws a tree at them however to get their attention.
    • Happens again with Ganondorf who heckles them for doing so. Kimani threatens him afterward.
  • Imagination-Based Superpower: Master and Crazy often use their powers in combat to create whatever comes to mind. Master tends to use simpler summons while Crazy, being more imaginative, uses more random items.
    • Dave can use his fire powers to create different items and is generally limited by his mind. However, he tends to forget how free his abilities are and sticks to simple things.
    • Slightly subverted with Dylan, who has to copy whoever he looks. But he's still capable of using any form he stumbles upon to great effect.
  • Immortal Immaturity: Despite his age, Crazy acts like a kid and is very aloof and easygoing.
    • As Primids can't die, they also fall under this category as many of them act like teenagers in contrast to their years of living.
  • Impact Silhouette: Crazy does this in Chapter 2 when Master calls him into the room. Master aggravatedly points out the door he could have used seconds after.
  • Implausible Fencing Powers: Meta Knight can swing his sword, Galaxia, faster than the human eye can see as well as fire beams of energy. He can even cleave energy attacks in two.
    • Dice can fire sword beams as well.
      • Ike's sword, Ragnell, is an extremely heavy two-handed sword, yet Ike wields it easily with one hand.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Headshot's aim is said to be so good, he can snipe a fly's wing from a long distance. While exaggerated, he still is the best shot in the army and is in charge of Scope Primid training.
    • Despite the blindness in his right eye, Venom is a natural with a bow and his aim is still as accurate as it was when he was alive and had two eyes.
  • Improvised Lockpick: Venom's feathers can double as lock picks
  • Improvised Lightning Rod: Typhoon uses his war hammer in order to avoid Dylan's lightning bolts during their sparring match by throwing it into the air.
    • Dylan's natural height and attunement to lightning causes most of Raquazza's lighting bolts to strike him instead of his shorter companions.
  • Increasingly Lethal Enemy: Dice gets stronger the more damage he's taken, making him extremely dangerous if not taken out fast enough.
    • While not an enemy, sometimes Sub-Portals can appear, which spawns neverending waves of Sub-Creatures. If not destroyed, the heroes can find themselves overwhelmed by the masses.
    • Lucario deals more damage the more he takes. At max Aura, he's capable of one-shotting many things.
  • Inexplicably Tailless: Averted. Ivory, a raccoon, is tailless due to protecting her sister, which resulted in her tail getting cut off.
  • Injured Limb Episode: Recovery and Rest and Relaxation are chapters dedicated to the recovery of the heroes due to injuries.
    • Down but Not Out is the Sub-Space equivalent but more so the army regrouping rather than waiting for everyone to recover.
  • Insectoid Aliens: The Space Pirates are described to look like bipedal insects.
  • Instakill Mook: Jeff can instantly take out anyone should he roll an Executing Eleven with his Impact Roulette
    • This is subverted slightly since he's classified as an Elite Mook.
  • Instant Expert: Once Dylan copies someone, he instantly shows knowledge of their abilities.

     J-M
  • Jack of All Stats / Jack of All Trades: Dylan is this compared to his friends in terms of stats and abilities. He's strong but not as strong as Jordan or Kimani, faster than Jordan but falls behind Austin and Kimani, and isn't the best in either melee or ranged combat. However, he's capable of handling anything that is thrown at him due to his balanced stats and ability to copy anyone he looks at.
    • Kimani also fits this as he has a healthy balance of health and energy as well as the ability to fight close range or long range. He's the fastest in the group but that's the only thing of his. His defense falls behind Jordan as well as his attack and his HP is the second highest being behind Jordan.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: There are quite a few, actually.
    • Kimani is perpetually angry, constantly cusses, and often punches or attacks his friends out of frustration, but he's shown to deeply care for them and won't hesitate to mess up anyone that talks bad about them or threatens them.
    • Venom. He's rude and generally uncaring towards everyone he meets as well as a natural-born killer but he does genuinely care for his friends... even if he refuses to admit it.
      • He does admit to caring for Ebony and Ivory once but after the reactions from the surrounding party, he immediately takes it back.
    • Samus is cold, bitter, and hates being around people. She also is constantly seen holding Pikachu in her arms as well as constantly watching over the younger Smashers. She even apologizes to Dylan once he actively shows his frustration with her at one point.
    • Bowser is gruff, rude, and sarcastic to everyone around him except for Peach. However, he has a deep respect for Mario and Luigi and he even risks his life to subdue Kimani at one point. He even congratulates him after a particularly tough fight, however, he denies it once Kimani pokes fun at him.
    • Falco tends to snark at everyone, including Fox but still cares for everyone.
    • At first, Jeff seems uncaring about everything, including his own boss as well as his fellow Primids. However, it's revealed that a loss of purpose caused him to become uncaring of everything around him. He still holds unending respect for the late Tabuu and he fiercely cares about his brethren, especially Dave.
  • Jump Physics: Everyone in the Smash Universe has access to a double jump of some sort. The heroes gain this ability as well, even heavier people such as Jordan.
  • Just a Kid: Roy calls the heroes kids, gaining their frustration. He quickly defends himself by saying he meant nothing about it and the fact that he's only 18 himself.
  • Just Hit Him: Played straight. Almost everyone uses their abilities to the fullest. Giant Primids will grab their targets and attempt to rip them in half unless someone stops them or pound them relentlessly while the others will show no mercy in their attacks.
    • Ganondorf had ample time to easily defeat the heroes but simply chose to knock them around and generally beat them up. He does almost kill Kimani, however, an order prevented him from doing so.
    • Master, Crazy and the Leader all possess great powers and could easily wipe out the others or at least cause a lot of damage on their own. However, Master and Crazy are forbidden to due to past actions, and the Leader due to unknown reasons.
  • Just Toying with Them: Typhoon holds back in order to see exactly how strong the heroes are during a sparring session. Right after the session, it was revealed that Typhoon wasn't even using a fraction of his strength and abilities.
    • Legendary Pokemon Groudon does the same with Kimani, who's only a Chimchar.
    • Master and Crazy limit themselves whenever they participate in anything against the Smashers in order to make it fairer for them. This ranges from limiting their abilities, taking more damage, or just generally handicapping themselves. Justified as they can erase reality with a snap of their fingers.
  • Kicking My Own Butt: Dylan does this in Chapter 4 when his other personality comes out.
  • Killing Intent: Being a trained assassin as well as a vulture, Venom radiates this all the time. His vision is enough to make anyone freeze in fear.
    • Ganondorf also has high killing intent as well.
    • The Sub-Space Leader normally doesn't have any radiating from him, but once he gets angry, it's intense.
  • Ki Manipulation: Lucario is a master at this. His aura can be manipulated in many ways ranging from spheres of aura, augmented punches, increasing his speed and defense, and many other attributes. The amount of ki he can manipulate increases as he takes more damage.
  • Kinda Busy Here: Being their weapons, the heroes more times than often will be asked something when they are fighting. Most of the time, the heroes respond while doing so but every now and then, a hero will respond with this line or a variation of it.
  • Kindhearted Simpleton: Crazy and Dylan aren't the smartest tools in the shed nor do they stay focused often but their kindness and infectious energy more than make up for it.
    • Tusk is a bit of a ditz at moments but he's very nice.
  • King Mook: Frostbyte is a Polar Bear is a Palette Swap of the normal Polar Bears that appear on Mount Icy.
  • Knuckle Cracking: Kimani's signature way of signaling he's serious via Type 1. Some other characters do this as well such as Bowser, Typhoon, and Dylan on one occasion via Type 2. (He hurt his hand doing so, however...)
  • Kung-Fu Clairvoyance: Justified. The hero's weapons have a 360 view from within their remotes and are linked to them mentally. Should someone appear from their blindside, they'll give them a heads-up.
    • Lucario can sense the aura of all living things around him, which helps in combat.
    • Most of the Smashers are skilled fighters and can notice tiny things such as a footstep or a person's breath.
  • Kung Fu-Proof Mook: Epsilon's armor is completely invincible to all attacks and any energy-based attack can be absorbed and fired back. There are weak spots on it however that temporarily shuts his armor down once attacked enough.
    • Jyks are Invincible Minor Minions that can't be harmed or destroyed in any way. They can only be avoided.
    • Groudon is a Legendary Pokemon as well as a bad match-up for Kimani's form, forcing him to come up with unique ways to inflict damage on him.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Kimani does this so many times, he can open his own store...
  • Large and in Charge: Both King Dedede and Bowser are huge villains, dwarfing their rivals. Ganondorf is also this, height-wise.
    • Typhoon fits this as well as he's massive compared to everyone else.
  • Last of His Kind: Alpha or R.O.B is the last of his kind due to previous events in The Subspace Emissary.
  • Large Ham: PJ. According to him, he was kicked out of his acting classes for being too dramatic so he had to settle with being a taxi driver. Kimani's reaction says it all.
    • Kimani is pretty dramatic at moments and rarely speaks in his indoor voice, needing Jordan to keep him in check.
    • Captain Falcon is the walking definition of this trope. When he's first rescued, the first thing he does is break into a long (and loud) soliloquy that causes everyone to sweatdrop.
  • Large-Ham Announcer: Since he's naturally a Large Ham and he was hired to be the announcer, PJ falls under this.
    • Q3 joins him, sometimes getting excited and yelling.
    • Crazy is this during the Heroes' mock Smash Battle.
  • Lazy Dragon: Played with. Firebrand is not afraid to get involved should the situation call for it but during moments of low energy, he's usually lounging around and is usually riding someone's shoulders.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Austin informs Master that one of his ideas "sounds like a Fanfiction idea." Master's reaction says it all.
  • Leap of Faith: The heroes pull this off one time from DK's Treehouse.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Kimani is prone to charging straight at enemies he shouldn't, much to the bain of his companions. He'll calm down once it doesn't work and be open to ideas afterward.
  • Lemony Narrator: Depends on the narrator. People like Kimani and Jordan tend to snark and point out things while Dylan and Ness tend to let their excitement and positivity get them off track.
  • Lendinga Backhand: Fake Meta Knight does this with the heroes in order to get to Kimani.
  • Le Parkour: Kimani is a practitioner of this. This makes him the most mobile one out of his friends.
  • Let Me at Him!: Bowser to DK at one point. It takes the combined effort of Kimani, Austin, and Jordan to hold him back. They even had to use their powers!
    • Kimani does this on a normal basis, but due to his size, usually, one person is enough to hold him back.
  • Let Us Never Speak of This Again: Jordan and Kimani agree never to bring up the fact that Jordan cried.
  • Life Energy: Lucario uses his own Life Force or "Aura" to combat foes. He can even sense other living beings by their life force.
    • Ness and Lucas can focus their minds in order to "feel" the life force of any living being around them. As it needs to be from living beings, they can't detect anything that's considered undead or a construct.
  • Light Is Good: Master Hand and the Smashers. The Heroes fall under this as well.
  • Lightning Bruiser: DK has speed, range, and power, making him a huge threat. He doesn't have any ranged moves however and his large size makes him an easier target.
    • To a lesser extent, Jordan. He has power and range due to his Warhammer and he can move faster with his Liquify ability, but anything airborne is a major threat to him as most of his strongest moves are ground-based.
  • Lightning Glare: Happens a couple of times
    • After a disagreement on Kimani's attire, Kimani and Peach glare at each other, causing a spark of electricity to shoot between them.
    • Happens again in 20'000 Kingdras Under The Sea against Kimani and a Slowbro.
    • Happens yet again with Kimani and Baba during the F-Zero Fight Night Tornament
  • Limit Break: The heroes can access their Final Smashes once they build up enough energy via taking or receiving damage.
  • Literal Cliffhanger: Dylan gets knocked off a cliff and snags a rock just before he falls.
    • A bigger version of this happens in Space Situation when the airlock blasts everyone off the platform. What follows next is a chain of people grabbing each other in order to keep from falling off.
  • Little Guy, Big Buddy: Kimani and Jordan have this dynamic. While Kimani is far from helpless, his short temper and punchy nature tend to have the calmer and bigger Jordan keeping him in check.
    • Dylan and Kimani share an inverted one as well. Dylan dwarfs Kimani height-wise but is very friendly and aloof, causing Kimani to constantly keep him out of trouble.
  • Living Crashpad: Kimani gets landed on a lot by his friends and other people. He's more than frustrated when this happens. Many people, including Kimani himself, lampshades this multiple times throughout the story.
  • Living Legend:
    • As many of the Smashers are heroes in their own worlds, this goes without saying. Even the villains are well-known.
    • Kimani mentions Sly Cooper at one point, causing the group of thieves to question his knowledge. According to Ebony, Sly's name is legendary in the thieving community for his legacy.
  • Living Mood Ring: Meta Knight's eyes will change color depending on his current mood. This ranges from simple colors and feeling such as blue for when he's proud or happy and red when he's angry to more complex colors for specific feelings such as pink for being in love or orange should he be stumped at the moment.
  • Living on Borrowed Time: The spirits in the heroes' remotes are technically dead, but the realm owners permitted them to assist Master.
  • Living Statue: The Porky Statue
  • Locked Out of the Fight:
    • Bowser, DK, and Ike are kept at bay by a firewall, causing the heroes to fight Ganondorf themselves.
    • Happens with Kimani and Austin's tests. Kimani gets separated from his team by a large wall while Austin is teleported away from his team.
  • Looming Silhouette of Rage: Dylan, Ike, and DK pull this off on Crazy when he instantly snaps a cake into existence after the group messes up the first one.
    • Dylan does this to Kimani when he wakes him up by yelling.
  • Lord of the Ocean
    • Kyogre's title is Keeper Of The Sea and is considered to be the creator of seas.
    • One of Jordan's abilities is called Njǫrd's Fury. Njǫrd is the Norse God of Water and is considered to be the keeper of the sea.
  • Losing the Team Spirit: The kidnapping of Kimani brings the entire team down moral-wise, which puts a halt on their normal brand of operations until his return.
  • Mad God: Master Hand before he got split. Crazy is technically this but Master's watchful eye keeps him from doing anything completely crazy.
  • Magic A Is Magic A: Master mentions at one point that there are many rules when it comes to Magic. So much that it would take a millennium to explain and he wouldn't even cover half of them.
    • Rosalina mentions that all magicians can only learn from one school of Magic. Being a natural, however, she was granted access to a second school but she was strictly forbidden from venturing into other schools.
    • Having broken the rules long ago, Master (and Crazy by extension) was given a new set of rules to follow. Master explains that he can't teleport into a different realm without the realm owner's permission. Even with permission, the realm owner must let them in on their own by teleporting or other ways.
  • Magical Accessory: The Mario Bros. and their hats. Peach's broach as well.
    • Kimani's pendant keeps the Sub-Space in him in check.
    • By extension, the heroes' Wii motes are worn as accessories when not in use. Kimani wears his as a necklace, Jordan and Austin have theirs dangling from their belt loops and Dylan keeps his in his pocket. However, his weapon turns into some very stylish goggles.
  • Magical Gesture: The Sub-Space Leader raises his arm at one point to summon a lightning bolt as a warning.
    • The Hands have to snap their fingers in order to use their powers.
    • Rosalina uses movements involving her wand in order to invoke her spells.
  • Magic Antidote: Zelda usually keeps Healing Potions and Antidotes on her in order to heal her teammates should the situation arise. They work instantly when drunk.
    • Ness and Lucas have various items with them that they can use to cure status effects, health, and energy. When poisoned, Ness consumes a herb that instantly clears his ailment as well as some Energy Bars to regain his strength.
  • Magic Fire: Firebrand's flames are augmented by the Firebrand, an ancient power that allows the wielder to utilize different fire techniques. As such, Firebrand's flames burn hotter than normal and he can will them to burn for as long as he wants.
  • Magic Is Mental: Master is a wise, well-educated deity and is well-versed in the ways of magic. He is also a gentleman and carries an air of class around him.
    • Rosalina fits this mold as well. She's well-spoken, knowledgeable, and one of the sweetest beings one can meet. It is shown by the vast amounts of love her Lumas show her.
    • Averted with Crazy. While not dumb, he's not as bright as his brother and is prone to more chaotic answers. He's still pretty nice, however.
  • Magic Misfire: Crazy's spells rarely go right. However, he's so well-versed in his particular style of magic that he can easily utilize whatever he's given.
    • Jeff's Impact Roulette can backfire and hurt him if he rolls a one. Seven also hurts him.
  • Magic Prerequisite: Jeff's Brink only works based on what he can see. If he can't see the place or object, he can't Brink to it. Additionally, some of his Impact Roulette rolls can only be used again once enough rolls go by. He can freely Brink to his cards without seeing them however but he'll lose the connection to the card if it drifts too far away.
  • Magnetic Hero: Master persuades a Rhydon to let them go. He even helps them and sacrifices himself to save them.
    • Dylan's natural charisma earns the heroes free items and allies in the Mystery Dungeons.
  • Mana Drain: Porky robs Jordan of his energy during their fight, preventing him from using Defensive Shout at one point.
  • Master Archer: Venom. Even with his blind eye, Venom's aim with the bow is legendary. If he ever misses, it's because he intended to or his target has powers of some sort.
  • Master Swordsman: Link, Marth, Ike, and Roy are all well-versed in swordplay.
    • Meta Knight is leagues above them, however.
    • Matt is incredibly skilled in Swordplay. According to his bio, he's the current champion in Kendo.
  • Meanwhile Scene: Done various times throughout the story, usually between separated character groups or even between the heroes and villains.
    • Some chapters are dedicated to this. Examples includes Down But Not Out, A Ferocious Encounter, and the Comming Round The Mountain chapters.
  • Mechanically Unusual Class: Dylan's Doppelganger class focuses on copying others for a set amount of time. While transformed, he usually gains that target's special attacks as well as a special article or part from them ranging from a Primid's hat and scarf to an Armight's ghostly tail.
  • Mighty Glacier: Typhoon is a ginormous man with a ton of power and durability on his side as well as a surprising range due to his Warhammer. However, he's the slowest member of the team and has to rely on trading attacks or blocking rather than flat-out dodging.
  • Mighty Lumberjack: Typhoon again due to Firebrand and Ivory's prodding. He still wears his helm and Warhammer, however.
  • Military Alphabet: R.O.B's new name is Alpha out of respect for his origins.
    • The Subspace Army has squads that use this. Only Alpha to Echo is shown but there are most likely more.
  • Military Rank Names: Subverted. As they are an army, the Subspace Army uses these ranks. Certain characters refer to them with their rank included.
    • Privates: Dave
    • Lieutenants: Johnson, Prime, Tusk.
    • Majors: Jeff
    • Commanders: Duncan
  • Mini Mook: Mites and Brtyons
  • Mission Control: Alpha. Unlike the others, Alpha rarely appears physically, and even when he does, it's usually a hologram. Instead, he provides information on whatever Dylan scans as well as potential solutions to any problems he may face.
    • Master usually watches over the heroes mentally and will offer them advice in times of need.
      • The other weapons to an extent. When they aren't actively fighting, they'll offer their input at moments, provide banter or warn them of anything attacking out of view.
  • Mixed Animal Species Team: Venom's team consists of himself, a Black Vulture, Ebony, A Caracal, and Ivory, a tailless Raccoon.
  • Modernized God: Master and Crazy are Gods whose normal forms are floating hands, however, they much prefer human bodies and are well-versed in human technology and behaviors, usually wearing casual clothing.
  • Monster Modesty:
    • Firebrand wears only a pair of shorts. Whether he has anything to hide is yet to be seen.
    • Ebony and Ivory have on full sneaking outfits while Venom wears nothing but a cloak that hides everything but his eye and beak.
  • Mook Commander: Tusk detests fighting and will instead buff and shield his smaller companions during battle rather than attack himself. On top of that, his very presence fills his troop with confidence which automatically makes them fight better.
  • Mook Carryover: The Primids. From Tabuu to the Leader.
  • Mook–Face Turn: Jeff not only allows Meta Knight and co. to escape with Kimani, Mr. Game and Watch, and Pikachu but he even joins the Smashers.
  • Mook Lieutenant: The Leader commands all but the Elite Primids are usually in charge during actual missions. Most of them even command their own sections such as Prime and his surveillance unit and Johnson with his Subspace Beast and Creatures Research Team.
  • Mook Medic: The Combat Medics in Space Situation. They could heal and revive their allies as well as buff and debuff others.
  • More Dakka: This is the usual strategy for Roturrets.
    • Dylan gets in on the action once he Copycats them.
  • Morph Weapon: Headshot's second weapon can morph into various weapons. He even added a few utility forms as well such as a shield and tools.
  • Most Common Card Game: The younger Smashers will often play Uno in their free time. Kimani also joins their games often but at least 2 or 3 Smashers will join them as well.
  • Multi Shot: Austin's Arrow Rain ability has him fire countless arrows into the sky, which then rains from the sky.
    • Venom himself can fire multiple arrows with one shot but usually prefers to shoot one to hit many.
  • My Fist Forgives You: This is Kimani's way of getting revenge.

     N-O
Kimani: (In response to the looming shadow over them) "Jordan, there is something big behind us..."
Jordan: (Sarcastically) "No shit..."
  • Narrative Profanity Filter: Characters will often be explained as swearing and cursing when avoiding something or just in general.
  • Natural Weapon: Venom is not against using his talons should an enemy get too close. He also uses his wings to disorient and confuse foes as well. He even uses his beak a couple of times but that's usually reserved for pecking Austin when he makes a mistake.
    • Firebrand's fighting style uses his natural weapons to a fine degree. His claws can be used for pinpoint attacks on nerves and other weak spots while his tail is used to bind, displace and even disarm his opponents.
    • While not often, Ivory can use her natural claws for defense. In the Mystery Dungeons, Ebony's unusually sharp quills can be fired like projectiles and can generally defend her from anything close by.
  • Neck Lift: Ganondorf snags Kimani by the neck twice during their fight. Given the size difference as well as his Super-Strength, it's very easy to do so.
    • Jordan usually grabs Kimani by the scruff of his shirt to keep him at bay or prevent him from maiming someone. He also grabs Crazy by the neck and lifts him out of anger at one point.
      • The Leader pulls a double neck lift on Dave and Jeff after being told off.
  • Negatives as a Positive: Kimani's stubbornness and anger problems might rub others the wrong way at times, but these traits also prevent him from giving up and usually he'll continue fighting, even if his body doesn't want to at the moment.
    • Dylan's aloofness causes him to get distracted more than the others, but this also allows him to use his powers more effectively due to owning an Imagination-Based Superpower.
  • Neon City: Mute City. Makes sense as not only is it a futuristic city but it's known as the meeting hub of the galaxy.
  • Nerves of Steel: Years and years of battling and training have made Red into the cool, calm, and calculating hero he is.
  • Never Hurt an Innocent: Ivory made a promise with Ebony years ago to never rob or hurt innocent people. This promise followed them throughout the years and they even got Venom to agree to this promise as well.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: There are a lot of examples...
    • With the heroes, there's Nice Guy Dylan who befriends everyone within a 20-foot radius and tries to solve everything with hugs and positivity, the human time bomb, Kimani who has a short fuse involving his height and is generally sarcastic and bitter and finally Jordan and Austin, both who are pleasant to be around but can also crack jokes and get angry from time to time.
    • Their weapons also get in on this. Alpha and Ebony are the nicer ones and generally treat others with kindness while Venom and Typhoon are cold and brash respectively. Firebrand and Ivory are a healthy balance between the four, positive for the most part but not above cracking jokes and being a general nuisance.
    • The younger Smashers include Ness, Toon Link, and Lucas. Lucas fills the nice roles due to his shyness and timidness, Toon is mean due to his hyperactive nature and aptitude for trouble while Ness is in between as he's nice for the most part but has his moments of frustration and will generally join Toon on his antics.
    • Ike is pretty straightforward and is the nicer out of the three swordsmen, Marth is more cynical than the two and Roy can be either.
    • Mario, Luigi, and Peach have Mario as the Nice, Peach as the mean, and Luigi as the between.
    • Should Toon Link be involved, he's the nice as he's nicer than the two due to his aloofness, Zelda is mean as she's fairly sarcastic for the most part due to Link and Link as in-between as he's generally a sassy dork but still nicer than Zelda.
    • The Space explorers have Fox as the nice as he's the most approachable, Samus as mean due to her cold personality, and Falco, who's brash but still nicer than Samus.
      • Wolf replaces Samus as the Mean should he be near Fox and Falco.
    • With Olimar and Captain Falcon, Samus keeps her role as the mean, Captain Falcon is nice due to his boisterous and justice-driven personality while Olimar is in-between as he's nice for the most part but is prone to losing his temper very briefly.
    • The Dreamland Trio has Kirby, whose childlike behavior and pleasantness make him the nice, Meta Knight, who has a no-nonsense attitude for the most part makes him mean, and King Dedede who's jolly but also cocky at moments, making him fall in-between.
    • On the Subspace side, Jeff, Dave, and Johnson has Dave, who's quick to follow orders and is generally nice, Jeff, who's noncaring about many things and is generally sarcastic for the most part while Johnson is a healthy balance between the two.
    • The Subspace Brothers, Slice, Dice, and Headshot have Headshot, who's fairly sarcastic but is still the nicer one out of the three of them, Dice as the mean one as he's kind of a berserker while Slice is in between them in terms of personality.
    • Even the squads fit as well!
    • Beta Squad:
      • Nice: Tucker
      • Mean: Hugh
      • In-between: Stock and Gus
    • Delta Squad:
      • Nice: Tusk and Rocket
      • Mean: Iron
      • In-Between: Saber, Gyro, and Teriyaki
    • Gamma Squad:
      • Nice: Scout and Yue
      • Mean: Zack
      • In-Between: Cyrus, Delta, and Tungsten
    • Echo Squad:
      • Nice: Doug and Westley
      • Mean: Roger and Fencer
      • In-Between: Kel and Steel
  • Noble Demon: Ganondorf heals the heroes before their fight due to taking fall damage. When given questionable looks, he bluntly says, "While I'm evil, I still want a challenge,"
  • Noisy Shut-Up: In order to stop DK, Dylan, Ike, and Bowser from running around and making noise, he causes a vine to trip the four of them.
    • Petey throws a tree at one point to stop a conversation in front of him at one point.
      • Ganondorf shuts the heroes up by throwing a dark ball of energy at them, quieting them instantly.
  • Nom de Guerre: Typhoon is referred to by the name his village bestowed upon him after a rather vicious raiding party.
  • No Mouth: Primids technically don't have mouths, but they are still capable of talking. They cover the lower half of their faces with scarves however so one wouldn't even know at the first glance.
  • "No More Holding Back" Speech: Jordan's Final Smash involves him and Typhoon rallying their teammates with a small speech. The general message? If you can't stand, get up and do it anyway.
  • No-Sell: Typhoon does this to a couple of the heroes' attacks during their training session. The best example of this is when Kimani lands a momentum-boosted Power Punch on Typhoon's face. The only reaction he gets is a minor head turn. He does it to Dylan's improvised attack as well, however, he lampshades it by saying he simply moved out the way.
    • Frostbyte does this with many of the Subspace Army attacks and even when Johnson and Dave attacks as well. His bio even states that he's insanely tough.
    • Should Jordan's Stand Strong passive activate, he can potentially tank a hit with no reaction. His Revenge Strike also allows him to do this as well.
    • Jordan's Final Smash makes his team strong enough to take hits without flinching for a short period of time.
    • Matt does this to Typhoon's punch. He tries to teach Typhoon how to do this as well, but it doesn't go that well.
  • No Challenge Equals No Satisfaction: Typhoon always enjoys a good fight and will be disappointed should they ease their way past fights.
  • Non-Fatal Explosions: As they're technically inside a video game, explosions do nothing except for launching people away and covering them in soot. They still take damage, however, just not as much as they would in real life.
    • Porky subverts this as his PK Blast, which is a psychic explosion, almost kills a full-health Austin even with the Defensive Shout. Yikes indeed.
  • Nonchalant Dodge: Typhoon casually tilts his head to avoid a lightning bolt from Dylan and sinks slightly into a puddle to dodge a hammer strike from Jordan.
  • Non-Lethal K.O.: After being shot in the head, Jordan isn't dead but his "Game Was Over." They even get a revive ability out of it.
    • No one "dies" in the Smash Universe. They simply turn into trophies. This even applies to the Subspace Army, who simply lose their forms and respawn at their base or the Subspace Halberd.
  • Non Sequitur, *Thud*: After being hit by PK Rocking, Dylan confusingly asks someone to get "the plate of that bus"
  • Not Always Evil: The Primids. While the leader is 100% evil, the Primids themselves have shown to be less than evil at moments. As they're an army, it's more so them following orders.
    • Tusk, one of the meanest and scariest-looking Primids, is actually one of the nicest people in the army. He's so nice that he can't bring himself to directly attack the Smashers during Coming Round The Mountain.
  • Not a Morning Person: Some of the Smashers such as Zelda and Link are shown to enjoy their mornings sleeping and are cranky should they be woken up.
    • In contrast to his friends, Kimani is this. Kimani will ignore, attempt to block out sound, and even bluntly tell people to go away should they attempt to wake him up in the morning. So far, he's mauled Dylan out of rage and forgotten how to speak once woken up.
      • Firebrand (and Kimani himself) lampshades this once Kimani wakes up at 9:30 one time. According to Firebrand, Kimani will sleep until 5:00 in the afternoon if left unbothered.
    • Jeff is usually found asleep when he's not on a mission and can get grumpy should he be woken up. He becomes more alert after an altercation with the Leader, however.
  • Not Evil, Just Misunderstood: Tabuu. Jeff explains that Tabuu never meant to hurt anyone. He simply wanted to create a world for himself and the Primids to live in peace, however, he lacked the knowledge to understand the consequences of taking parts of universes. Master even notices that Tabuu didn't actively attack them until Master started it.
    • By extension, The Primids.
  • "Not Making This Up" Disclaimer: When a Primid is venting his frustration about losing a signal, Prime mentions something about Space Pirates. The Primid questions this, causing Prime to respond with this line.
  • Not My Lucky Day: After ticking Typhoon off, getting beat up by Mites, and saying the wrong thing which ends up aggravating Kimani, Jordan solemnly mutters "I just can't win today..." just before he gets kicked in the jaw by another Mite.
    • Kimani gets beaten up pretty badly during the fight with Petey. After being constantly landed on, slapped, and flung around countless times, Kimani groans that he's "one big ache today,"
  • Not So Invincible After All: Typhoon is often shown to be the strongest one out of all the heroes, having beaten everyone in a sparring match except for Venom. Every time he appears, his massive strength is more than enough to take down the biggest of threats with ease. So imagine everyone's surprise when Matt absolutely destroys him in a sparring match, easily taking him down in seconds.
  • Not So Stoic: After Ebony and Ivory get kidnapped, Venom freaks out and even cries because of it. Austin, who has never seen him show such emotion is obviously confused and scared of what's happening but he quickly comforts the distraught assassin.
  • Obviously Not Fine: After being confined to bed rest, Kimani mentions that he's fine and still able to go on missions but he falls over instantly when he attempts to walk. Everyone's reaction is less than surprised.
  • Obligatory Joke: When Dylan ends up landing on Austin, he promptly tells Dylan "Nice of you to drop in."
    • While not a joke, Dylan starts heckling Falco during their flight, causing Fox to question if Dylan was always like this. According to Austin, Dylan's filling the void since Kimani wasn't there to do so himself.
    • Zack, who was frozen against a wall, responds to Dave's question by saying he's just "hanging out."
  • Obliviously Evil: Tabuu.
  • Ocean Awe: Dylan shows great interest in the Aquarium and pretty much glues himself to any window that shows water; more so the fish.
  • Oh, Crap!: Done by various people throughout the story. This is usually due to an attack that's about to hit or shocking news.
  • Oh, My Gods!: Many of the Smashers swear to different Gods or Deities in the story.
    • Mario and the others from the Mushroom Kingdom will either swear to Grambi, the ruler of Overthere, which is heaven, or Queen Jadez, the ruler of Underthere or hell.
    • Venom swears to Anubis often when something goes wrong.
    • Firebrand mentions the Elder Dragons regularly.
    • Typhoon swears to Odin constantly. (usually towards his beard)
    • Master, being a God himself, will swear to himself every now and then. It's unknown if Crazy swears to himself as well or Master.
    • Link, Zelda, and Toon Link will swear to Din, Nayru, or Farore. They even swear to the land, Hyrule itself at moments.
    • Meta Knight and King Dedede will use Dreamland as their swear word.
    • Subspace Beings will either swear to Sub-Space itself, The Leader, or to Tabuu. However, only a handful do that last one, Jeff included.
    • Ivysaur swears on Celebi's name at one point.
  • One-Gender Race: The Primids. Jeff mentions brothers and sisters at one point but no female Primids have been shown yet.
  • One Handed Zweihandler: Ike carries and uses his sword, Ragnell with one hand usually. According to the legends, Ragnell is a notoriously heavy 2-handed sword.
    • Typhoon uses his war hammer with one hand primarily. Jordan can perform attacks with one hand by using it as a makeshift brass knuckle but can't swing it around with one hand.
  • One Side of the Story: Once Master Hand starts pressuring Jeff, he snaps, telling Master he didn't know Tabuu as he did. Jeff then explains his side of things.
  • One-Man Army: In a fit of rage, Typhoon singlehandedly killed/repelled the raiders that attacked his village long ago.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: "Red" is mostly known and referred to by that name. He doesn't mind being called by his actual name, however.
    • Venom is only known and referred to by his codename. The only people that know his real name are Ebony and Ivory.
    • Typhoon is referred to by his title instead of his actual name.
  • On Second Thought: Once Kyogre reveals his challenge, Jordan shows confusion and questions it twice. Kyogre then offers to fight him instead, causing Jordan to immediately show great interest in it seconds after.
  • Open-Fly Gag: Taken to a new level. Rather than his pants, Bowser (who doesn't wear pants) appears one time in his boxers. The following reaction from everyone causes him to look down and quickly fix the problem.
  • Operation: [Blank]: Operation: Stealth and Cheat Death are a few ideas from Kimani and Firebrand but they don't stick.
    • Dylan suggests Black Plague as a name, which Kimani begrudgingly admits is a good one.
  • One-Winged Angel: Once Kimani gets stressed enough, he'll transform into Sub-Kimani. While he doesn't get bigger, he becomes tremendously stronger than before and becomes more violent as well.
    • This changes to an on-command form once Jeff starts living in his controller.
    • Master and Crazy can swap to their true forms, which are giant floating hands. They are significantly stronger in these forms but become bigger targets.
    • Bowser and Ganondorf can access their beastly forms when forced. Both of them grow to an impressive size.
  • Opponent Switch: Happens during the mob battle against Tusk's unit in Coming Round The Mountain. Both Tusk and Dylan constantly switch their allies around in order to get the upper hand on the other. It's only when Red gets involved that the heroes finally pull ahead.
  • Ordinary High-School Student: All four of the heroes are high school students. That is until they get sucked into Kimani's TV after school.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Dave is worried about Jeff after the Leader scolds them. He notices many things wrong, but the most alarming thing about his changed behavior is the fact that he isn't sleeping as much.
    • Venom freaks out once Ebony and Ivory are kidnapped, which scares Austin, who is nearby. To put it in respective, Venom is never one to show much emotion, so the fact that he starts crying is very alarming.
    • Dylan is almost never seen upset or frustrated so imagine people's surprise when he snaps once he learns that Kimani is being kidnapped, which shows how serious the situation is.
    • To add to this, people can generally understand when Dylan is upset whenever he stops smiling. The biggest tell however is when he starts scratching himself, which signals he's about to fully freak out. His friends, Red and Samus have all caught this so far.
      • To a lesser note, Dylan again. With Kimani resting, Dylan fills the void by arguing with Falco. The behavior is so odd, Fox questions it.
    • Once Kimani awakens and is debriefed by Master, he immediately looks at Jordan. Apparently, it's rare for Jordan to get furious. So rare that he physically can't remember the last time he was. All he remembers is how terrifying Jordan was. The fact that Kimani, one of the angriest characters in the story, acknowledges this is saying something.
  • Over-the-Shoulder Carry: Happens often with Kimani by the bigger Smashers as well as Jordan and Dylan.
    • Crazy performs this once with Dylan.
     P-R
  • Painful Pointy Pufferfish: The Quillfish in the Bottomless Sea Mystery Dungeon.
  • Pain-Powered Leap: While not from pain, Kimani leaps high into the air once Jordan throws him into the water.
  • Passthe Popcorn: When Samus' Power Suit reactivates and she goes on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge against Heavy Lobster, Falco is seen eagerly munching on some popcorn. Fox questions the origin of it, to which he responds by shrugging. He continues to eats it anyway...
  • Parrot Pet Position: While not pets, Venom and Firebrand are usually perched on their partner's shoulders.
    • Pikachu does this sometimes with Red.
  • Pent-Up Power Peril: Back when he was alive, Firebrand had to actively use his powers, or else they would build up to catastrophic levels and not only kill him but anyone else around him in a large radius. His tutor, Tulvir, taught him various ways to do so but eventually, it reached critical levels and he had to be put down.
    • Should Kimani get too angry, the Sub-Space inside of him can swell out of control and transform him into Sub-Kimani. While he's extremely strong in this form, it takes a heavy physical toll on him afterward. Even during the transformation, his health rapidly decreases.
      • With Jeff's help, Kimani can avoid the side effects of this transformation, but as a result, the Sub-Space targets Jeff instead, still making this a dangerous form to use.
  • Permission to Speak Freely: This was once uttered by a Primid. What followed next was a very blunt "This sucks."
  • Physical God: Master and Crazy. With just a snap of their fingers, they can warp reality on a whelm. This gets nerfed by the Ancient ones, but they can still summon anything they please and warp reality in tiny ways.
    • Lady Palutena, Goddess of Light falls under this category as well.
    • Rosalina is the Queen of the Cosmos and has a plethora of Space oriented powers.
    • The Star Spirits are this as well, usually showing up by projection rather than in person.
    • The Sub-Space Leader (And Tabuu by association) is one as well seeing as how they have various powers, nigh-invulnerability and was even strong enough to knock out Master and almost take out Crazy during their first battle, both who are gods themselves.
  • Physical Heaven: Master accessed Heaven in order to recruit Firebrand, Venom, Ebony, and Ivory. He visited Valhalla, the resting place for Norse Warriors afterward to pick up Typhoon. According to Typhoon, Valhalla and Heaven are next door to each other.
  • Pie in the Face: While not thrown, DK ends up with a face full of Banana Crème Pie once he slips on a banana peel. He licks his face afterward, enjoying the taste of it.
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: Nana and Popo respectively. Popo wears a blue parka while Nana wears a pink one.
  • Pinned Down: Happens to the Heroes in Coming Round The Mountain via Roturrets and Scope Primids. It takes Austin and Ivory's stealth abilities in order to stop the fire enough for the others to press forward.
    • On a lesser note, Dylan suppresses Yoshi and Austin at one point with watermelon seeds.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: While not short, seeing the smaller Matt take out the giant Typhoon deserves a mention. Even the others are taken aback by this.
    • Kimani might be smaller than his companions but he's shown that he's just as strong (if not stronger at moments) as them.
    • Played straight with Jordan however as he's the biggest and strongest out of the group.
  • Place of Power: The Smash Manor. Master and Crazy's powers are amplified significantly within the Manor's presence. Once they move a good distance away or they go to different realms, their powers diminish heavily.
    • Tabuu, the original Sub-Space Leader, physically couldn't leave the Sub-Space Realm, or else he would perish. Regardless, Tabuu's powers were tremendously stronger there and he got stronger the more Sub-Space was created. He got so strong, he was even able to overpower and take control of Master Hand years ago.
  • Playing with Fire: Kimani's elemental powers are this. He can throw fireballs, set his whole body on fire with no immediate repercussions, and can launch himself with a burst of flames. He's also hot-headed and generally angry.
  • Please Get Off Me: Uttered multiple times by various characters, usually Kimani, whenever they get landed on.
  • Poisoned Weapons: Austin can temporarily coat his weapons in poison in order to... well, Poison his foes.
    • Venom is known for his expertise in poisons but he has yet to show that however.
  • Positive Friend Influence: Dylan is one of the most cheerful characters in the story and his presence helps keep everyone's spirits up. Not even characters such as Kimani and Samus are immune to his charm.
    • While not positive completely, Kimani tends to keep Dylan from being completely walked on by others by either threatening others or scolding Dylan himself.
    • Ness' pure positivity helped Lucas open up and become more comfortable around others.
  • Post-Victory Collapse: After taking out Upsilon, Kimani passes out from his transformation.
    • Austin does this in the F-Zero Fight Night Tornament after pulling off Soul-Sync for the first time.
  • Power Copying: Dylan's weapon revolves around this. He can copy anyone he looks at for some time. He can only copy one person at a time however and people that are significantly stronger than him like mini-bosses and bosses can't be copied at all.
  • Power Crutch: The Heroe's Wiimotes. As it's not their actual powers but the soul's powers, they have to use it with the Wii Motes. Should the Wiimotes be separated from them, they can't activate their powers or use their elements in any way. They still retain their durability and increased strength, however.
  • Power Limiter: Kimani's Smash Pendent keeps the Sub-Space inside him in check, preventing him from shifting into Sub-Kimani.
  • Powered Armor: Samus's Power Suit. Not only does it give her increased durability, strength, and firepower, but it also has built-in thrusters that give Samus's impressive leaps even more oomph and can even allow her to run at extremely high speeds. Her visor also gives her important information and the suit even has an energy shield that protects her from the brunt of attacks. And finally, the armor is surprisingly flexible, which allows her to tuck into a very compact ball, which gives her access to smaller spaces as well as her bombs.
  • Power Makes Your Voice Deep: While not deep, Jordan's voice becomes distorted once he activates Berserk. Kimani changes as well when he turns into his Sub-Form.
  • Power-Strain Blackout: The first time Kimani uses his Sub-Form, he ended up passing out for days until he was active again. This doesn't happen again but his Sub-Form uses so much energy that it starts draining his health rapidly should he shift to it.
    • With Jeff's help, this becomes a bit safer but if he lets it last for too long, both him and Jeff risk passing out.
    • When Austin pulls off Soul Synchronization in Knockout City, both he, Venom, and the girls are out of commission for a while.
    • Kimani and Firebrand join Austin in Soul Syncro in This Means War! Firebrand is perfectly fine and Kimani doesn't instantly pass out after doing so, due to his past experiences with his Sub-Form. He still dozes off afterward.
  • Prank Gone Too Far: Duncan was the target of a prank years ago that caused him to be wary of Fire Primids as a result. Not much information is given about it but Teriyaki was a part of it according to his bio.
    • He doesn't hate Dave, however, but he's still careful around him due to his fire powers.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: Venom delivers a good one. Once he gains the ability to leave the controller, he confidently says "Now, let's go get my girls back," before he and Austin power through the various Pokemon meant to stop them.
    • He delivers another line in the same chapter as well, saying "Let's show them why they shouldn't (Censored) with us..." once they confront the kidnappers.
  • Precision F-Strike: When Kimani is almost killed, Firebrand delivers a strong "Fuck" as he comes to his aid.
    • When riled up, Jeff threatens the Leader, telling him he "better keep his fucking promise". Add the fact that the F-word is usually censored, this shows how serious he is.
  • Prehensile Tail: Yoshi can pick up and grab things with his tail should the situation need it. He uses this to grab a Primid's ankle and trip him.
    • Firebrand has total control of his tail. It's even incorporated into his fighting style. Firebrand can use his tail to disarm, move or even take down his opponents.
  • Preemptive "Shut Up": While not vocally, Jordan usually muffles Kimani after another character says something because he knows it'll be rude and unneeded.
    • Kimani does this a few times to Dylan, usually by placing a hand on him and shaking his head.
  • Prosthetic Limb Reveal: When Fox knocked on his legs, a metal sound was heard. Fox then explains to the others that he lost his legs in an accident during a mission. He even shows them it.
  • Prophetic Names: Some of the Primid's names are directly tied to what they're good at. Guess what "Slice" and "Dice" are proficient in...
    • "Headshot" also fits in this mold.
      • Subverted by Fencer, whose bio states that he "actually doesn't know how to fence, despite his name"
  • Puncha Wall: In a fit of frustration, Master Hand punches a wall twice, causing everyone to flinch as he's usually calm and contained.
  • Punch Parry: During a sparring match, Matt and Lucario collide one last time with their fists before they bow to each other.
  • Punch! Punch! Punch! Uh Oh...: In The Good, The Bad and The Greedy (Part: 2), Johnson punches Jordan in the face but Jordan tanks it with no problem, causing Johnson to sweatdrop. He follows up with some rapid punches, however.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!:
    • Kimani does it a few times within the story, usually toward his friends.
Kimani (Interrupting Jordan and Baba): "Not to interrupt whatever this is, but he's! The! En-e-my!"
    • Jeff bluntly threatens the Leader with a cold delivery. His delivery of "Take. You. Down." is an example.
  • Pulling Theirselves Together: After getting blown apart by Kimani's Focus Blast, Cackletta puts herself together as if nothing happened. The sight almost makes Kimani throw up.
  • Quantity vs. Quality: The Smashers vs The Subspace Army. The Smashers are all heroes or villains capable of handling themselves against multiple fighters at a time. The Subspace Army's ranks consist of Primids as well as various creatures. Individually, Primids don't have much going for them with the exception of the more elite Primids, but together, they can be a serious threat.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Kimani regularly gets frustrated throughout the story by various things. His rage skyrockets whenever his height gets brought up, he takes too many hits or someone pushes his buttons one too many times. His rage not only grants him access to his Sub-Form but even causes Kimani and Firebrand to Soul Sync during their battle with Cackletta.
    • Nice Guy Dylan loses his cool and gets angry after his friends get hurt (as well as some coxing from Samus) during the F-Zero Fight Night Tournament, prompting him to use Death Beam with Kimani.
      • He loses his temper a few times in the early chapters as well, which causes his companions to show concern for him.
    • Jordan loses his temper and has to confine himself in the Smash Arena in order to vent his frustration.
  • Ragtag Bunchof Misfits: The heroes, who are basically a sub-product of Recruit Teenagers with Attitude by Master.
    • Venom, Ivory, and Ebony fall under this as well. Venom's cranky and hates people, Ebony is kind and enjoys helping people and Ivory is outgoing and reckless. Despite these differences, they work perfectly together.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Master and Crazy Hand. They usually appear as 20-ish-year-old men however when they're interacting with the Smashers.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: Subspace Army. Normal grunts are usually pushovers while some of the more known Primids, such as Dice (Who isn't a Lieutenant) can hold their own in a fight. Then come the Lieutenants such as Slice, Headshot, Tusk, and etc. These units are usually a stronger variation of the others and a lot tougher than the others. Then there's Jeff, who's the only Major in the army. He's significantly stronger than anyone in the army besides the Leader.
  • Reality Warper: Quite literally, Master Hand. (and Crazy by association) With a snap of his fingers, he can theoretically erase things from existence and change the fabric of the universe. However, due to tampering a bit too much in the past, he's now kept under close watch by the Ancients and will be terminated should he break the rules placed on him. He can still warp reality, just not as disruptive as he used to.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Kimani's hot-blooded red nature is the complete opposite of Dylan's hyperactive but positive blue attitude. In terms of Jordan and Austin, Jordan's not as angry as Kimani but he tends to get grumpy easily while Austin is more mellow than the two but nowhere near as positive as Dylan.
    • With the Wii-mote spirits, Ivory's the most outgoing one of the team with Firebrand joining her red antics at select moments. Typhoon is right behind him with his boisterous and fight-happy nature. Ebony's more blue than the previous three, usually quiet and thoughtful while Venom's cold and calculating nature surpasses her blue. Alpha is the bluest due to not being human and physically not having emotions. (He's still capable of showing urgency and cracking jokes by accident every now and then.)
  • Required Secondary Powers: On top of their usual abilities, the Heroes are also granted increased strength and durability. That way, they don't break so easily when fighting. It's not perfect however as Kimani once broke his hand and rib during a fight and the heroes can still be incapacitated should they get hit in the leg or back pretty badly, but it keeps them alive.
    • Kimani's fire powers involve him throwing flames and even setting himself on fire in order to damage anything near him. His natural resistance to the heat helps with this but he's not immune to fire damage and his Fire Form will start to shave health from him should he stay on fire for too long. He's also incapable of using any fire abilities when drenched and he's extremely weak to the cold. In terms of overall powers, Kimani's fighting style is a smorgasbord of moves he's seen in games or videos. Without the durability, he would most likely break or pull something while reenacting them.
    • Jordan's burly stature makes him physically tanker than his friends and his powers cause him to be even more tanker than usual. (His extra pounds tend to absorb impacts) While he gains the strength to wield his Warhammer, he's notably weaker than Typhoon and can't sling it around as freely as he can. Without the passive strength, however, Jordan would have physically been unable to use the Warhammer.
    • Austin's background in lacrosse and sports in general makes him one of the more mobile heroes and his powers enhances his natural athleticism. Despite this, Austin wouldn't be able to use his blades and bow well without the increased reflexes his powers bestow on him.
    • Dylan's power involves him constantly swapping his attributes on the fly, making his weapon the most complicated one to use. His ADHD helps in this department as he's shown to easily learn how a form works and use them to its fullest potential. (That and Alpha is more than likely beaming information into his head...) In terms of his lightning powers, it's revealed that the electricity is generated from the Wii-Mote (Alpha) and can't be turned off normally. As a result, should Dylan touch water or be submerged, he'll shock anyone around him. He's not immune to the damage himself.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Back when he was alive, Typhoon went on one when a band of raiders came and claimed his wife and kidnapped his son, which is how his name was earned.
    • Samus goes on a mini-one when Heavy Lobster short-circuits her suit. Once it recharges, Samus promptly turns him into scrap metal, earning the admiration (and slightly fear) of her companions.
  • Rousing Speech: Jordan's Final Smash involves him and Typhoon rallying his allies, granting them increased strength, and durability. It even heals their wounds.
  • Run or Die: When the gang encounters Ridley, Mario makes it well known that they're incapable of damaging him at all, and should he catch them, he'll easily kill them.
    • To a lesser extent, the Porky Statue. It's invulnerable to all attacks, causing the Heroes and Smashers to run away from it when it appears.
    • In an effort to free the Primids, Kimani and Jeff stay behind and fight Cackletta in hopes of stalling for time. Throughout the battle, they're incapable of dealing any lasting damage, and even with the usage of both Jeff's Joker's Wild and Kimani's Soul Sync, they're on death's door. It's only with Jeff's Brink ability do they escape, albeit by the skin of their teeth.
     S-S
  • Sarcasm-Blind: Dylan's positive mood and dimwittedness cause sarcasm to roll off of him constantly, much to the annoyance of characters such as Kimani, Jordan, and Venom.
    • Crazy fails to catch sarcastic questions as well, answering them as if they're genuine questions.
  • Save Both Worlds: The heroes learn quickly that should the Leader take over the Smash Universe, their world will be next.
  • Sea Monster: Raquazza in Jungle Hi-Jinks. Bonus points due to him rising from the lake like a normal sea monster.
  • Saw It in a Movie Once: Before receiving formal training, Kimani utilizes makeshift karate moves and general street brawling. Firebrand even lampshades this, mentioning he can't get away with using moves from "cheesy kung-fu movies."
  • Say It: In order to receive Bowser's help with a mission, Bowser forces Kimani to ask him. Nicely. Kimani almost dies of embarrassment and pride during it.
  • Scolding the Fourth-Wall Breaker: Master scolds both Toon Link and Dylan when they ponder the number of chapters they've been up for.
  • Scooby Stack: Dylan, Kimani and Ness perform a mini version of this in Space Situation. It makes sense however as Ness, the shortest, is on the bottom while Kimani, the second tallest, and Dylan, who towers over the two, is on the top. Kimani still ends up headbutting Dylan in the chin when they duck back into cover.
  • Second Hour Superpower: The Heroes are given special Wii-Motes which house their powers shortly after dropping in the Smash Universe.
  • Security Cling: The Heroes have a habit of grabbing each other during scary moments. Special mention goes to Kimani who will jump in Dylan or Jordan's arms should he get startled by something.
    • Whenever water is involved, Kimani jumps onto Jordan's back so he doesn't drown. Since he can't swim, this makes sense.
    • Before Frostbyte can maul them, Johnson and Dave hug each other and screams, causing Jeff to unenthusiastily save them.
    • Lucas constantly hides behind Ness or other bigger Smashers due to his shyness.
  • See the Invisible: Venom shows this ability within the Mystery Dungeons. When Kecleon tries to turn invisible and sneak up on the party, Venom is the only one who can see him.
    • Austin's Thief Lights can sometimes point out invisible foes to him. If they attempt to attack him, his Thief's Reflex can kick in, allowing him to dodge without spotting the foe.
  • See Water: Justified. The pool at the Smash Manor is so clear that Dylan has no problem seeing underwater.
  • Seize Them!: After turning some of the Primids into Floro-Primids, she tells them to capture the remaining Primids, causing them to run away.
  • Self-Harm: Dylan tends to lean towards this whenever he's stressed or frustrated. Usually, he'll scratch at himself but should no one stop him, he'll resort to physically beating himself up as evident in A Puzzling Quest According to Dylan, it's more so Pablo taking control of his body during these moments.
  • Self-Damaging Attack Backfire: The main penalty with Jeff's Luck Attacks. While the benefits are usually well worth the risk, the penalties usually involve debuffing or taking some of Jeff's health as payment. He can even flat-out kill himself if he's extremely unlucky. However, being a Primid makes this more of a minor inconvenience since his species can't die.
  • Self-Duplication: Austin's Mirror Image falls under this. He can create a perfect clone of himself visually, but it only has half his health and a 4th of his strength, making this ability more useful defensive than offensive.
    • Jeff's Two/Three Of A Kind Gambling Art creates clones of himself. Unlike Austin's, these clones retain all of Jeff's strength and abilities, including Joker's Wild but the trade-off is they can only take a single hit and the damage of said hit will transfer to Jeff immediately.
    • Matt is also capable of making clones of himself but unlike the other two, his clones aren't exact copies of him visually. He's capable of making a plethora of clones, however. The most he's done at once is 20 for Kimani and Dylan's training sessions.
  • Shock and Awe: Dylan's elemental powers revolve around electricity. On top of shocking his opponents with Lightning Bolts or even just grabbing them, he can assist his allies by jolting them with lower voltages which will increase their speeds or even heal them.
    • Pikachu, the electric mouse, naturally possesses electric attacks.
    • Ratchet utilizes an electric whip during Knockout City.
    • Cackletta's main method of attack is summoning lightning to strike her foes. She can also grab and channel large volts of electricity within her hands for a close-range attack as well.
  • Shoot the Medic First: A general rule throughout the story. Characters will even lampshade this should they see an enemy heal another one.
    • Played with. During the F-Zero Fight Night Tournament, Alpha suggests taking out the Combat Medics first. Not because they possess the ability to heal, but because Space Pirate Upsilon will take their turns to deal more damage otherwise.
  • Shoot the Dangerous Minion: Cackletta shows signs of this when she notices both Jeff's influence on the army as well as his increasing frustration with her. Unluckily for her, Jeff is savvy of this and escapes, joining forces with Master as a result.
  • Shrinking Violet: Lucas is constantly seen hiding behind others and is one of the shyer and quieter Smashers. The only person he's open and comfortable with is Ness due to his infectious positivity. He eventually becomes more comfortable around the Heroes, even Kimani.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Kimani. He eventually cuts back on it but even then, he still curses more than anyone in the story.
  • Self-Offense: Jordan gets attacked upon entering the Living Room by the Smashers. This is understandably after the Smashers are alerted of Kimani getting corrupted by Sub-Space and potentially running rampant throughout the manor.
  • Sentient Stars: Rosalina's Lumas.
    • The Star Spirits fall under this as well.
  • Shadowed Face, Glowing Eyes: The Primids.
    • Meta Knight is also an example. His eyes even change colors.
  • Shaping Your Attacks: Kimani has a move called Dragon Uppercut. Guess what shape his aura makes during it?
  • Shared Universe: The Smash Universe is implied to be this. While the obvious has been stated, such as Mario, Link, and others sharing the same universe, there have been references and even cameos from other people such as Ratchet and Clank to even Sly Cooper.
  • Shed Armor, Gain Speed: Upsilon's gimmick in the F-Zero Fight Night Tournament. While he loses his invulnerability, he can move a lot faster and he can even attack multiple times should his partners not take any action.
  • Shorter Means Smarter: Played with. Kimani isn't necessarily the smartest, but he's the most genre-savvy in the group and he's also one of the toughest as well. He's the shortest member of the Heroes, however.
  • Shoryuken: Quiet literally Kimani's Dragon Uppercut. It even give him invulnerability upon usage.
  • Shoulder-Sized Dragon: Firebrand once he gains the ability to exist outside the Wii-Mote. He's usually coiled around someone's neck and resting on their shoulders like a scarf when he's not in combat.
  • Shoulder Teammate: Venom is often seen on Austin's shoulder, either offering advice or scolding him.
    • Kimani will usually ride on Dylan's shoulders or back should he not want to walk at that current moment. He does this with Jordan as well, but not as often.
    • Toon Link does this with the bigger Smashers. Jordan is his usual target but will swap to Dylan if he's nearby due to being taller.
    • Firebrand, being a Shoulder-Sized Dragon, does this with Kimani often.
    • Captain Falcon allows Olimar to ride around on his shoulders very often.
    • Diddy rides around on DK's back a lot. DK himself is also open to carrying others on his back as well.
  • Shut Up, Scary Thing!: While not directly, Kimani's outburst causes the threatening Dark Petey to momentarily pause in attacking them. It doesn't last long however as he throws a tree at them afterwards to halt the argument.
  • Signing-Off Catchphrase: The author ends the chapters with the same tagline every time.
Kooper: This is Kooper The Koopa, signing off!
    • Later on changes to Kooper Shellington but is overall the same message.
  • Silicon Snarker: While not often, Alpha will occasionally snark the others. due to his factual and information-based nature, it's usually unintentional.
  • Simple, yet Awesome: Dylan's Scan ability. The ability literally scans the target. While simple, it's also one of Dylan's more useful moves as Alpha will give a detailed background about the characters scanned and will offer suggestions on how to deal with them should they be an enemy.
    • Kimani's Power Strike. Low energy and not as flashy but it's one of his more useful moves when it comes to inflicting damage.
  • Sinister Scythe: Eleven, a spectral jester, gets this as his weapon of choice.
    • Jeff himself gets one when he uses Joker's Wild.
  • Situational Hand Switch: During a battle with the Space Pirates, Dylan's right arm gets Paralyzed, forcing him to use his left hand. Since it isn't his dominant hand, this causes him to get overpowered easily.
  • Sleep Squashing: Bowser grabs Yoshi in his sleep and rolls onto him, squishing him. It takes the help of Mario and eventually Master to free him. Bowser then reveals he wasn't sleeping and was messing with them.
    • DK leans on Jordan, squishing him slightly. When he pushes him off, DK (who's asleep) ends up landing on Diddy, crushing him.
    • Happens to Kimani during Knockout City. While resting, Jordan ends up leaning on Kimani, eventually getting pinned under him.
    • According to Luigi, DK once grabbed him and tried to "peel him," thinking he was a banana in his sleep.
  • Smack on the Back: This usually happens to Kimani by the bigger and stronger characters in the story. Most of the time, it'll just sting but sometimes it'll straight up knock him over. His reaction is more times than not annoyed.
    • DK is prone to doing this to others. He tends to forget how strong he is, however.
    • Ike has a habit of doing this to Marth and Roy. Since he can wield a two-handed sword with one hand, this usually knocks over whoever he decides to congratulate.
  • Smart People Play Chess: Master enjoys playing Chess a lot and can occasionally be seen playing it or at least messing around with it.
    • Austin is shown to be proficient in Chess after playing a match with Master. While we never see the outcome, Master's expression and body language could imply he lost or was close to losing.
    • Jordan also knows how to play Chess, having played with his grandfather constantly. This comes in handy as Kyogre's challenge is a Chess match.
    • Inverted with Kimani and Firebrand. During Jordan's test, the two are constantly asking questions about the pieces and moves. Kimani even accuses Kyogre of cheating a few times after seeing maneuvers such as Castling.
  • Smile of Approval: After Austin pulls off a series of impressive and tactful maneuvers, Venom gives Austin an approving smirk.
    • Bowser gives Kimani one after pulling through during a tough boss fight. He denies it once Kimani brings attention to it, however.
    • After the final battle against Cackletta's Soul, Venom gives Austin a genuine smile. He drops it when Ebony and Ivory turn back around.
  • Snarking Thanks: Kimani loves doing this whenever an ally harms him or fails to help him.
    • Other characters such as Bowser and Venom are also prone to doing this as well.
  • Snark-to-Snark Combat: Kimani vs... well, any snarking character is a joy to watch. Special mention goes to Bowser. Should the two of them argue, it ranges from this to full-on fighting.
    • Venom and Ivory tend to try and out-snark the other regularly. Ebony occasionally joins in but will usually stop them should it go on for too long.
    • Firebrand loves annoying Kimani and the others and will often get into snarking battles between them. His usual targets are Kimani, Typhoon, or Venom, but he's not above messing with others.
    • Jeff and Dave will often snark at each other should one be annoyed with the other.
  • Sniper Duel: Austin faces off against Crying Wolf's Mech in Snake Eater this way. Since the enemy is too fast for anyone else to fight, Austin has to wait and listen for the enemy, which can't be heard until it fires. Austin has to find them, fire, and dodge the following shot in less than a few seconds, making this a stressful battle.
  • Sniper Rifle: Accurately named Primid Headshot wields a morphing weapon. A sniper is his preferred form, however.
    • During Fight Night, Trace a Bounty Hunter uses a sniper and a highly effective cloaking system with devastating effectiveness during the fights.
  • Snot Bubble: Bowser sports one when he's asleep.
  • Some Call Me "Tim": Master's name is unpronounceable by normal means, so to make it easier for the less divine, he simply goes by "Master."
    • Crazy, being the other half of Master, has the same problem. It's unknown if his real name is the same as Master's or his own, but everyone calls him "Crazy" as a result.
  • So Much for Stealth: The first time Crazy attempts to subdue Sub-Kimani, he steps on a loose panel, ruining his potential stealth attack.
    • The second attempt has Bowser, Jordan, and Crazy try again. Crazy prevents them from stepping on a loose... only to step on another one right next to it.
    • Meta Knight utters this line once during Jail Break after his group makes too much noise and tips off the guards.
    • Kimani also yells this line when his group is caught after running into some brainwashed Primids
  • Speed Blitz: Austin is capable of using this technique when he's Soul-Synced. Add the fact that he can turn invisible and Austin can end fights against normal opponents in the blink of an eye. The only reason why he doesn't abuse this is due to the amount of energy needed to maintain his Synced Form.
    • Vamp's main way of attacking. Austin can see and avoid his attacks, but Captain Falcon and Jordan understandably struggle to combat this. It's only when Austin and Jordan Soul Syncs that they are able to subdue him long enough for the team to escape.
    • Kimani can do it briefly when he's In The Zone with his Footwork ability, which is described to be extremely fast.. well, footwork. To anyone incapable of keeping up with the speed, it looks like teleportation.
    • When Matt gets serious, he's capable of moving at high speeds as well. He'll refrain from using it during simple sparing sessions however but he will incorporate it during his training sessions if need be.
  • Speed, Smarts and Strength: For Speed, Austin takes this role due to his hit-and-run focused tactics and his general speed. Strength goes to Jordan for his size and unmatched durability and power. Kimani's habit of punching things first and asking questions never also makes him a contender for strength but ultimately, he falls under Smarts as his wide array of video game knowledge and quick thinking allows him to take down foes stronger than him or give his team the knowledge to win. Dylan also falls under Smarts as well due to the complexity of his weapon and the fact that his weapon can be used to scan and figure out the weaknesses of their foes.
    • In terms of their weapons, Strength goes to Typhoon, who's easily the strongest member physically. Ebony and Ivory are the speedsters of the group and easily earn the Speed title. Finally, Firebrand, Alpha, and Venom are the Smarts as Firebrand tends to use his unorthodox fighting style to outplay his opponents while Alpha, being a robot, approaches every problem logically and calculates the perfect course of action. Venom, due to his blind eye and burnt wing, is forced to be more defensive. Due to this and his preferred method of attack normally, he tries to outsmart his opponents rather than brute force or outspeed them.
  • Spider-Sense: Austin's (and Ivory's by association) Thief Lights will warn Austin of incoming damage occasionally, even if it's not in his range of vision. It doesn't work 100% of the time, but when it does, it'll show the attack's trajectory via lights and allow Austin to make the slightest movements to dodge.
  • Spin Attack: Jordan's Cyclone ability does this, making him a whirling hitbox of destruction.
    • Kimani can enhance this by kicking his weapon mid-spin, but he's usually dizzy afterward.
  • Spinning Piledriver: Baba in the F-Zero Fight Night Tornament uses this move on both Jordan and Dice once. Both of them were less than pleased about receiving it.
  • Spin to Deflect Stuff: Mostly shown with Jeff during Joker's Wild, who will often spin his weapon to deflect projectiles.
    • Eleven can do the same thing with his weapon.
  • Split Mind, Split Powers: Master Hand, being split between his logical and calmer side and his crazier and more unpredictable side is this to a more literal point. They share most powers such as teleportation, minor reality warping, and others but during combat, Crazy's spells are more potent damage and area-wise at the expense of backfiring occasionally while Master's spells are more towards utility and defensive play.
  • Split Personality: Master Hand. His more active side is Crazy Hand.
    • Dylan's more violent side, Pablo, falls under this as well.
  • Split-Personality Switch Trigger: Should Dylan become too stressed out or become really upset, Pablo can come out and take control of Dylan's body. Should this happen, he'll usually just beat himself up until Dylan can wrestle back control again.
  • Squashed Flat: This happens mostly to Kimani when a heavier character lands on him. Every time this happens, he's reinflated by a bike pump a Smasher conveniently has on their person or shaken until he's back to normal.
    • Diddy is a victim of this when Jordan pushes DK off of him and he lands on him as a result. Like Kimani, he's reinflated by a bike pump afterwards.
  • Status Effects: There are a ton. The heroes weapons will inform them the first time they recieve them. Most are simple such as Poisoned, Ignited (burning), and Paralyzed but there are a few special ones.
    • Exhaustion happens when a hero uses too much energy via special attacks or by getting hit with too many ice attacks. It renders the hero immobile for a moment, which leaves them open to follow up attacks. They can't be knocked out of the status however so it's a dangerous status to get during hard battles.
    • Wet, as the name implys, leaves a character soaking wet and is usually after they fall into water or is swamped by a wave of some sort. Being inflicted with Wet usually means you take half damage from fire attacks and double from lighnting attacks. Certain characters are affected by this status in other ways, such as Kimani's powers just flat out not working to Dylan taking Damage Over Time due to having a constant electric charge running through his Wii-Mote.
    • Slowed makes a hero move and attack slower. Kimani, interestingly enough, is affected by this more, even if the attack didn't come from an icy source.
    • Taunted makes a hero focus on nothing but the taunter. The hero doesn't get stronger or lose defense but they'll throw caution to the wind as they try to maul whoever made them mad.
