Fanfic / A Blight on Bonesborough

Go To

A Blight on Bonesborough is an Owl House Role Swap AU By GeminiAlchemist (who also wrote On Earth and Boiling Isles). The fic depicts what would happen if Amity was the human apprentice of Eda and Luz is the witch.

Tired of living up to her family name, Amity ends up chasing Owlbert through the portal to the demon realm and meets Eda. After one adventure, Amity seizes the opportunity to run away from home and start a new and (kinda) normal life in the Boiling Isles as a witch. In addition, the story occassionally chronicles the misadventures of Vee the Basilisk on Earth. Each chapter adapts an episode of the show, with some events reordered, combined or skipped over completely with the plots of those episodes being altered in some way. Also expect a few intermissions as a break from the main storyline.

Following the completion of Season 2, the author decided to make their own Season 3 to continue the story since the actual season had yet to air.

As of September 25th, 2022, the fic is fully completed, making it GeminiAlchemist's longest work at 43 chapters and 449,587 words.

Can be read here on Archive of Our Own or here on FanFiction.Net.

This fanfic contains examples of the following tropes:

    open/close all folders

    A to G
  • 11th-Hour Superpower: Zig-zagged. During the final battle against Belos, Luz believes she’s grown enough in her harpy form to fly, but it turns out to just be Ghost levitating her as her wings still aren't strong enough to carry her.
  • Aborted Arc: "The First Week" sets up a potential Love Triangle between Amity, Luz and Boscha. By the time of Grom, the latter bows out when she sees how into each other the former two are.
  • The Ace: Barcus is said to be the top student of the Oracle track, with Amity becoming a close second after her first week at Hexside (despite the fact that Luz had been sending an illusion of her to class in her place).
  • Actually Pretty Funny: Hearing Amity's description of King antagonizing Boscha's gang after body-swapping with her gets a chuckle out of Skara.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Luz has a lot more self-doubt than she does in canon. Having inherited Eda's curse, she blames herself for Eda and Camila spitting up, she sees herself as a monster and she's scared that Willow and Gus will stop being friends with her if they learn the truth, even (initially) thinking she's not their best friend until Amity says otherwise.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change:
    • Eda developed a relationship with Camila, having Luz as a result. When they learned Luz inherited Eda's curse after her first transformation, Eda had to leave them and spent 5 years searching for the person who cursed her so she can kill them for causing their suffering.
    • Since Camila's a witch in this story, she's the demon realm equivalent of a veterinarian, a beast healer.
    • Since Luz has been attending Hexside since she was young, Eda showed her the Secret Room of Shortcuts so she could use it to cause mischief. Instead, she uses it to study every kind of track in secret and allowed Viney, Jerbo and Barcus to use it for the same reasons, forming the Junior Bad Girl coven.
      • Since Luz is already in the potion track, Barcus starts out in the oracle track. This was done so each troublemaker was in a different track and so Amity met at least one of them before joining them.
      • Willow was able to switch to the plant track thanks to Luz encouraging her to use the room to study in secret, which took her a year.
    • Harvey Park is noted to have switched from the abomination track to the plant track like his daughter.
  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Camila becomes this after knocking out Kikimora at the petrification ceremony and she slowly becomes more of one after joining the Bards Against the Throne, especially when she becomes the group's leader after Raine becomes head of the Bard Coven.
    • Viney and Harvey Park joining the CATT's puts them in this category, too.
    • Even though Eda's stuck in her Owl Beast form after the petrification ceremony and lost her magic, her Owl Beast form's still stronger and able to use her claws and flight ability to make up for it.
      • As of chapter 23, Eda has permanently transformed into her Harpy form removing pretty much all of the problems she had with her Owl Beast body.
    • Seeing as she's Eda's daughter, Luz is definitely a stronger magic user since her magical abilities are rather potent. Near the end of the story, she gains a harpy form. However it later doubles as Adaptational Wimp, as Luz doesn't get to become a half-Titan hybrid.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: The Blights (except for Alador) are introduced much earlier than in the parent work.
    • Vee also shows up way earlier than she did in canon, being seen at the end of the second chapter, the equvalent to the second half of the series premiere.
    • The rest of the Bards Against the Throne (Raine, Derwin and Amber) debut in "Pain of a Sorceress", the story's version of the Season 1 finale.
    • Alador appears in person in the second intermission between seasons, as does Jacob Hopkins.
  • Adaptational Explanation:
    • While it's still unclear how Amity obtained Ghost in the parent work, it's shown here that Ghost was one of the Bat Queen's refugee palisman and Amity, despite not liking the cat's haughty nature, came to bond with them.
    • Lilith wanted to find the time pools in her youth because she had hoped to stop herself from ever cursing Eda.
    • The reason that Belos is able to keep tabs on his enemies is because he's been having the Collector monitor them from the In Between Realm. Later, he gives Odalia the Oracle Sphere in order to predict his enemies' moves.
  • Adaptational Gender Identity: The Gravesfield teen with the glasses (known as Sam here) is made out to be non-binary.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: One of canon Odalia's very few remotely pleasant qualities (lack of prejudice against same-sex relationships) is scrubbed away since this version doesn't reside in a Non-Heteronormative Society, preferring if Amity ended up with a boy instead of a girl.
  • Adaptational Karma:
    • The Coven Heads who remain loyal to Belos here (Terra, Adrian, Vitimir, and Hettie Cutburn) are all shown to have been imprisoned for their actions rather than having their fates left ambiguous.
    • Odalia also doesn't get off ambiguously scot-free for her hand in aiding Belos for her own personal gain as when Alador divorces her, he makes sure she'll never have more money than she needs to get by.
  • Adaptational Late Appearance:
    • Camila is introduced in the story's version of "Covention".
    • Boscha and her gang don't physically debut until "The First Week", but they are mentioned before then.
    • Kikimora isn't introduced until the story's take on "Agony of a Witch".
    • Tibbles doesn't appear until the story's well entered Season 2.
    • Terra Snapdragon appears in what would be the episode after her debut.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Compared to how they turned out in Season 3, the Collector doesn't cause as much damage as they did in "For the Future" when King tries to teach them empathy. They don't understand the concept or morality or why King would be upset if they hurt his loved ones until King himself nearly dies, working with Camila to revive him and leaving the Demon Realm to find friends who aren't as fragile as witches, demons, or humans.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: Edric and Emira are confirmed (or at least hinted) to both be bisexual due to how often they flirt with Luz and Hunter.
  • Adaptational Wimp: While Belos is still a powerful magic user, he doesn't fuse with the Titan's heart during his final attack on witchkind, instead relying on his monstrous form.
  • Adaptation Deviation:
    • Amity learns the ice glyph first, then fire, plant and the light glyph last. She learns the latter by finding in in the constellation of stars.
    • The twins did steal Amity's diary, photocopied its pages and put them up all over school as a prank. Their nearly outing her is why she resented them.
    • Luz decides not to study in all the tracks because she doesn't feel ready to narrow down her options to multi-track in just two tracks (and it requires good grades).
    • Gus is voted out as president of the Human Appreciation Society. Mattholomule doesn't claim the position; instead, it goes to Eileen.
    • Willow is chosen to fight Grometheus the Fear Bringer and doesn't switch out with anyone, defeating it single-handedly. Meanwhile, Amity and Luz become a couple after Grom with the latter kissing the former first.
    • Amity steals the abomination coven relic from the Emperor's castle, of which she uses the abominations within on her adventures as backup.
    • The Bards Against the Throne use Willow and Gus' protest as a cover to destroy all the petrified statues at the conformatorium, sparking a rebellion against Emperor Belos' rule. With many people from different covens joining their ranks now, they're rebranded as the Coven's Against the Throne (CAT's) much earlier.
    • Instead of destroying the portal like Luz did in canon, Amity drops the key in the human realm before closing the door so Emperor Belos can never get it, forcing him to try making his own.
    • Eda accepts her curse and refuses to let Lilith split it between them, telling her it won't earn her forgiveness (which leaves her stuck in Owl Beast form). Eda then convinces her to split Luz's curse between them before telling her to go stay at their parent's home, which omits Lilith and Hooty's friendship.
    • Between seasons, Jacob Hopkins captures Clara thinking she's a witch since Vee's under house arrest in Blight Manor, leading Masha, Tom and Sam to rescue her and Jacob, who goes to the police and admits to detaining Clara, loses his job and his weapons at the Gravesfield Historical Society.
    • For the first few weeks during her first attempt to find whoever cursed her, Eda stayed with her parents and tried some of her mother's alternative cures hoping one would work and could be used on Luz. It caused her to resent Gwen more, but at least she accepted Dell's forgiveness for the Owl Beast attacking and injuring him 8 years before she did in the show because it allowed them to be part of Luz's life after Eda brings King home.
    • The events of "Hunting Palismen" occur before "Through the Looking Glass Ruins".
    • Luz and Willow join Gus as he journeys to the Looking Glass Ruins with Mattholomule, Bria, Gavin and Angmar. Their encouragement towards the latter two causes them to backstab Bria only to be defeated by the girls.
    • After unlocking her harpy mode, Eda stays in it so she can have a body again and the Owl Beast within her can see the world rather than being trapped in her.
    • Following their actions at the petrification ceremony, Raine went underground to lead the BAT's, causing Scooter Crane's retirement to be delayed so he remains the head of the Bard Coven.
    • After King gains his sound power, Eda decides to enroll him as a student in Hexside.
    • With the portal key in the human realm, Hunter has no reason to betray the witch who offers him a hand in friendship, deciding to stay at the Owl House for a while.
    • A few days after Eclipse Lake, Hunter backstabs everyone and claims both the intact portal and the key after Vee and her friends end up in the Boiling Isles, while leaving Vee stranded in the demon realm so he can capture her at a later time.
    • Several Hexside students protest the Coven Day Parade, which doesn't have many people in attendance due to lack of interest in joining covens. Luz chooses to ignore Kikimora's panicky state but when she decides to help Kiki, her problems get solved by someone else, and Emperor Belos announces Raine as the new Bard Coven Head at the end of the parade, with Steve saying that Scooter Crane got killed so it could happen.
    • Luz sits out talking to Philip Wittebane since she can't handle being around Lilith: instead, she carves her palisman with Eda and Dell at her grandparents' home while Amity and Vee go instead. And because of Vee realizing Philip smells like Belos' magic, Luz learns Belos is human sooner.
    • The events of "Edge of the World" and Labyrinth Runners" occur at the same time as those of "Any Sport in a Storm".
      • Hooty's prohibited from going to Titan Trapper Island for eating Tarak's letter to King, Eda and Camila going with Luz and King instead.
      • Adrian helps Hunter infiltrate Hexside to find recruits for the covens, giving him and Flapjack concealment stones. After a week, he tries branding students by force when Hunter reveals his identity.
    • Since Eda's told Luz, King and Hooty the story of how she met Raine several times over the years, they stop her from telling it again to Amity, so she tells them how she met Camila instead.
    • Eda passed down her Grudgby jacket to Luz sometime ago in case she ever played the sport.
    • Eda learns that Raine's faking their brainwashing and working with Darius and Eberwolf sooner, getting invited to help them invade Belos' mind with Darius' motives being that he learned Hunter's origins and wants the rebellion to get him out of the Emperor's grasp. Amity gets sent in with Hunter instead of Luz and records all of Belos' misdeeds on her scroll, which Hunter posts on Penstagram causing the entire Isles to learn Belos is a witch hunter. And with the walkie-talkie destroyed by Belos, King enters the In Between Realm to communicate with them before providing the Titan's Blood needed to activate the spell that rescues them. Afterward, Darius keeps Hunter from running away as he begins spiraling.
    • Belos' image is destroyed because of video costing him most of his support, with Coven Heads Mason and Osran siding with the CAT's and Vee & Hunter providing their sides of the story to the public. Philip escapes to the Human Realm with the portal and the Collector isn't freed, so the Day of Unity fails, everyone loyal to the throne is taken into custody and Amity, Luz, Willow, Gus and Hunter aren't stranded in the human realm.
    • Belos learns King's a Titan after hearing word of it from the Titan Trappers, and decides to take his blood to free the Collector in order to get a second chance at activating the Draining Spell.
    • Lilith takes Eda's place as the Clawthorne impersonating Raine in order to make the Draining Spell fail, everyone hoping her curse will destroy all the coven sigils.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job:
    • Edric, Emira and Odalia are all blondes in the story instead of green-hairs.
    • Amity, who's still a natural brunette, dyes it blond until she escapes to the demon realm. After 2 months, she regains her original hair color. She's also confirmed to have blue eyes.
    • Since Luz is Eda's daughter, her eyes are gold instead of brown and because of the curse, her hair is slowly turning gray, forcing her to dye it brown every month until she stops.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: Boscha's not as antagonistic to Luz, Willow and Gus since Amity wasn't around growing up. After Amity chooses them over her, Boscha re-evaluates how she and her friends treat each other and becomes a bit nicer to other people as a result.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • Eda and Lilith try to be civil with each other since Luz is part of their family here, but their relationship tanks since Lilith cursing Eda means she cursed Luz too, so Eda can no longer be in the same room with Lilith without wanting to kill her and sends her to live with their parents in the Season 1 finale.
    • Vee and Masha's relationship status wasn't said to have moved past friendship when the series ended, but here they get together.
  • Adaptation Species Change: The story's premise revolves around the Blights being humans and the Noceda's are witches.
  • Adapted Out: The Blights being humans means the events that lead to those of "Understanding Willow" are excluded.
    • With Luz having two mothers, Manny Noceda won't be making an appearance.
    • The former two reasons means the events of "Reaching Out" got cut as well.
    • Any events of canon-Season 3 are predictably not included, which means Papa Titan and Luz's Titan form are never featured, and the glyphs powered by the Boiling Isles remain active.
  • Adaptive Ability: Thanks to the black box that transmits data to the Blight parents, the Abomatons are upgraded each time they're defeated so they won't fall to the same methods the next time they're sent to capture Amity.
  • Affectionate Nickname: As per canon, "Batata" and "Sweet Potato" are used between Amity and Luz.
    • Dell calls Eda "Pumpkin" like in her childhood despite her reminding him that her hair's no longer orange, so he alternates by using "Little Bird", and he often calls Luz "Little Light".
  • All for Nothing:
    • Because Eda never would've suspected Lilith of cursing her, she wasted 5 years of her life and missed out on Luz's childhood because she was following empty leads while Lilith never bothered to confess.
    • At first it seems that Amity berating the twins for destroying the Forbidden Stacks when they attempt to warn her about the Golden Guard being in there to claim Philip Wittebane's diary to help Belos build a portal becomes this when he succeeds. However it ends up being the opposite: since Edric found the echo mouse that ate the diary's pages (which Amity unknowingly brought home), the Blights can now use Philip's notes to make headway. Meanwhile, Hunter ends up getting berated by Belos for bringing him a damaged book.
  • Almost Kiss: Amity and Luz nearly have their first one on the lips after a grudgby game... only for Luz to back out due to Amity reeking from sweat.
  • Always Someone Better: Amity proves herself to be much smarter than Emperor Belos when she plans things out.
    • In the Season 1 finale, she comes up with a strategy that ensures Eda would be freed and improvises with discarding the portal in The Human Realm so he can't claim it.
    • In the final chapter, she has the Hexsquad force him back into the Human Realm and goads him into using his magic so the glyphs carved on his body would destroy him.
  • Amazon Chaser: A Running Gag with Edric, as he often comments on how attractive Eda is and constantly calls Luz cute.
  • Amicable Exes: Played straight with Eda and Camila; they met while Camila was still in school, dating for years and raising Luz until she turned into the Owl Beast at age six. This led to Eda leaving them and spending 5 years trying to find who cursed her, causing Camila to move on. It eventually gets subverted since they still have feelings for each other and decide to start their relationship over from scratch, since it's not fair to love the people they used to be.
  • Amoral Attorney: Tibbles has a brother, Pibbles, who is just this. While he acknowledges that Eda is of her right mind despite being in her owl beast form, he cheerfully prepares to call in “Demon Control” when Eda objects to her stuff being gotten rid of, citing that by the standards of the law, she is considered a wild animal.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Darius cuts off Camila's arm as she, Eda and Raine attempt to escape the coven heads. Luckily she is able to heal herself and reattach it. Darius later admits it was an unintentional accident.
  • And the Adventure Continues: The story ends with Luz's palisman hatching from her egg at long last, eagerly awaiting her first adventure with her carver/mother and her family.
  • Answer Cut: After Hunter says in the Season 2 finale that Belos will return from the Human Realm with the "most evil thing he can find", Raine asks Amity what that could possibly be. After a Bait-and-Switch with Alador, Philip is shown in Blight Manor wanting to talk to both Blight parents.
  • Ascended Extra: Amity replaces Luz as the main protagonist, with Edric and Emira getting more supporting roles before becoming main characters in Season 2A, trying to build a portal so they can go home.
    • Vee stars as the Hero of Another Story in the chapters set on Earth. She replaces the twins as main characters in Season 2B now that she's the one stuck in the demon realm trying to return to Earth, although it's downplayed since she ends up falling into the background for most of it.
    • Camila, Lilith and Harvey are also given some focus as members of the CAT's.
    • Scooter Crane actually appears in contrast to only being mentioned in the show.
  • The Atoner: Lilith has been working hard to make up for everything she's done because every little thing she does brings her a little closer to making up for giving Luz her curse as well as Vee's forced existence. She refuses to accept Vee's thanks for showing her the basilisks in the past since she still owes her so much.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • Two occur in Chapter 6: twice Amity and King believe they're being hunted by a slitherbeast and both times they're wrong. The first fakeout reveals they just heard Eda going to the bathroom, the second time they face Luz in her Owl Beast form.
    • When Luz manages to bond with her Owl Beast, she believes she's unlocked a harpy mode at first. When Eda, Camila and Vee see her transformed state for the first time, they tell her that she actually looks like an owlet.
    • When the eclipse passes, the CAT's believe that the kids managed to stop Belos from trying to activate the Draining Spell. When they get to the Head though, they learn Belos escaped to the human realm and they never even encountered him.
  • Beach Episode: One serves as the first chapter of Season 3, focusing on the kids going to the beach to relax after spending so long working to overhaul everything from Belos' rule and accepting their new normal.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: As much as Eda loves Luz's optimism, she says it makes her too trusting and wishes she'd be a bit more restricted with people. After Hunter's betrayal leaves Luz brooding in silent anger for the next few days, Eda is put off by how she's finally hit her "moody teenager stage" and misses said constant optimism.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Confused for UST by Vee, Clara and Masha tend to banter whenever the subject of dating the basilisk comes up. Sam and Tom seem to have a bit of this but are in denial about it.
  • Beware the Nice Ones:
    • Compassionate and understanding as she is, Luz doesn't take kindly to anyone who messes with her family or betrays her trust. And seeing as how she can transform into the owl beast if provoked hard enough, it's not a wise decision.
    • After years of suppressed anger, Willow attacks Grom so savagely that everyone watching the fight and even Grom becomes terrified of her power.
  • Big Damn Kiss:
    • Vee kisses both Clara and Masha on the cheek, then has them kiss her, then each other the same way in "Hooked on a Vee-ling" to solidify their new relationship.
    • Eda kisses Camila when it seems like she'll die and then when she recovers in "Camila's Lament".
    • Luz and Amity share their first real kiss at the end of "Camila's Lament".
  • Bittersweet Ending: Each season and mid-season finale (except the final chapter) seems to act as this.
    • Season 1 ends with Eda getting stuck in her Owl Beast form, Lilith being disowned by her and Luz as family and Edric and Emira stuck in the demon realm since Amity had to throw the key through the portal so Belos can't get it. However, Lilith splits Luz's curse so she can better control her owl beast, Raine's actions at the petrification ceremony puts a massive crack in Belos' public image, and Camila decides to join the Bards Against the Throne to make a better future for Luz.
    • Season 2A has Edric and Emira finally returning home to the human realm, Amity and Clara apologizing to each other and starting over as friends and Jacob realizing he was wrong about witches and demons and deciding to stay in the demon realm. Unfortunately, Hunter betrays the Owl House residents in order to claim the portal and its key after sending the Blight twins, Clara, and the cabin 7 trio back to the Human Realm while intentionally stranding Vee in the Demon Realm so he has the option to capture her later: this leads Luz to develop a hatred towards him, not to mention he knows Camila's leading the CATT's now. But to keep Vee out of his clutches, Camila agrees to take her in.
    • Season 2B has a Cliffhanger ending: the Day of Unity is stopped, Belos' forces are arrested and the Collector is left sealed away. Unfortunately, Philip has returned to the Human Realm and has decided to ally with Odalia and Alador with the intent of revealing where Amity's been all this time, the CAT's discover the graveyard of Golden Guards in the Head of the Titan and as long as Philip is free, Vee is stuck in the Demon Realm and Hunter will never be able to rest.
  • Black Comedy: In "Bringing Home the Bacon", Eda kills Pibbles (Tibbles' brother) and serves him as bacon for her and the kids to eat. The chapter ends with her planning to do the same to Tibbles when he comes looking for his brother.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: An argument regarding the portal key causes a case of this in "The Previous Day's Fib". Camila and most the cabin seven group agree that in order to keep the portal key out of Belos' hands, Vee should drain it of the Titan's Blood within so she can sustain her human disguise: however, Clara and the twins want to keep it so they can visit Amity in the Demon Realm with Edric saying the final say should be Eda's choice.
  • Brick Joke:
    • In "An Unhallowed Mind", Luz geeks out over Raine (as she's a fan of their music) and hopes she can get them to sign her forehead. Two chapters later (the latter of which starts after a Time Skip), and it seems Raine's repeatedly said no to her request, asking her to bring an album.
    • At the end of the last chapter of Season 2, Raine asks Amity what the most evil thing Belos could bring from the Human Realm be. At the end of the next chapter, Amity gives them her answer: her parents.
  • But Now I Must Go:
    • In the first chapter of Season 3, Dos announces his plans to leave the Boiling Isles to Vee, hoping to find other Titan islands with basilisks in hopes of convincing them to return home now that Belos is gone. The epilogue confirms he's on his journey when Camila gives Vee a letter from him.
    • In the epilogue the Collector, now understanding why it wouldn't be beneficial to "play" with King's friends, leaves to find a world untouched by human or witch and friends he can't break but promises to return one day.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Amity stands up to both her parents in "Worlds Apart" when she confronts them in Blight Manor to reclaim the portal key, saying it was their actions that drove her to willingly leave for the Demon Realm and that they're disrupting her happiness. While Alador has a Heel Realization, Odalia doesn't think much of it.
  • Captain's Log: "Associated Waves", "The (Coven) Pride Parade", and "The Beach Episode" open on Amity writing in her diary recapping events that occur in the chapters preceeding them.
  • Cassandra Truth: When the twins corner Amity in the demon realm almost a month after she ran away, she explains where she's been in that time. Emira refuses to believe her... at least until Hooty strangles her and Edric in a hug.
  • Chekhov's Gun:
    • Dos, a member of the CATT's, uses a dagger meant for stabbing that only healing magic could heal a wound enough to slow the bleeding, so it's almost guaranteed to kill them. Terra confiscates it when she captures Dos and uses it on Camila, but unbeknownst to her, Cam's a healer.
    • In the penultimate chapter, Amity learns that glyphs don't work in the Human Realm. She uses this to her advantage in the final chapter, getting Belos to use his magic so the glyphs disintegrate and weaken his body long enough for the kids to crush him.
  • Chekhov's Lecture: In "An Unhallowed Mind", King explains his theory about humans being heavier than witches being due to them having muscle to do things like hunting while witches rely on their magic. While in Belos' mind, Amity remembering this along with seeing memory photos of Caleb is how she deduces Hunter was cloned from him.
  • Cliffhanger: "Hassle in the Castle" ends with Amity, Luz, Hunter, and Vee going through the portal to the Human Realm to stop the production of Abomatons while Belos steals the Collector's Mirror and agrees to free them if they create another eclipse to enact the Draining Spell, with the intent of acquiring Titan's Blood from King.
  • Complete-the-Quote Title: "...and What Gus Found There" is a play-on-words to its canon episode, "Through the Looking Glass Ruins".
  • Cranial Eruption: As a running gag, Hunter takes many hits on the head that give him goose eggs.
  • Crush Blush: It's not an Owl House story unless Luz and Amity do this around each other as their feelings grow.
    • Vee, Clara and Masha all do it around around each other as their feelings for one another become known.
    • Eda sports these as it becomes clear she still has feelings for Camila. It's later shown to be mutual.
    • Also as per canon, Willow and Hunter have these around each other.
  • Cuteness Proximity:
    • Amity was never one for overly cute things, but she finds King indescribably precious and calls Owlbert stupidly cute while chasing him through the portal door.
    • Edric never got to have pets due to his parents, so he jumps at the chance to care for all the palismen that briefly stay at the Owl House, giving each one as much undivided attention as possible.
    • Luz gushes upon seeing her Owl Beast (which is only a baby) when she meets it. After bonding with it, her owlet form is described as adorable, with Amity's reaction to seeing it for the first time resulting in a Cuteness Overload.
  • Damsel in Distress: The second time an Abomaton attacks, it captures Amity in its grasp causing her to panic as she had realized that her parents are using the machines to bring her back to them.
  • Dark Horse Victory: Neither Gus nor Mattholomule get to be president of the Human Appreciation Society when a new one is elected: Eileen becomes Gus' successor.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • "Interlude: The Noceda House" focuses on Luz and Lilith.
    • The intermissions set in the human realm showcase Vee during her time with Clara and the cabin seven trio.
    • "Associated Waves" puts Edric and Emira in the spotlight.
    • Camila has a lot of focus in the story's take of "Eda's Requiem", aptly named "Camila's Lament".
    • "Blood of the Titan" makes Luz the center of attention, a reversal to "Eclipse Lake".
    • "Elsewho and Elsewhy" has Vee star in the A-plot and Dell in the B-plot.
    • "Any Sport in a Labyrinth" focuses on Hunter and Willow with Gus, Mattholomule, the original multu-trackers and the Banshees getting attention too.
    • "Somebody to Lean On" gives each member of the Noceda-Clawthorne family their own plots on the anniversary of when Eda left her family; Luz vents to Amity about her parents splitting up and decides to confront her Owl Beast, Eda goes to talk with Camila about their relationship, and King tries to make peace with learning he's a Titan with Steve talking to him.
    • "Back to the Nineties" shows us how Eda (at age 19) met Camila (age 17) for the first time.
  • Deal with the Devil: "#CancelBelos" ends with Philip offering Alador the abomination flask and the portal key so long as he and Odalia hear what he has to say about Amity being in the Demon Realm.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • The Greater Basilisk dies here, which is seen as a Mercy Kill compared to the alternative of being experimented on and tortured some more by the Emperor's Coven.
    • King undergoes a Disney Death, but is healed soon after, making a full recovery in the epilogue.
  • Desperately Craves Affection: When Amity first started staying at the Owl House, she was determined to earn everyone's approval because of her desire to prove her worth that resulted from her upbringing. She eventually grew out of it, but she still thinks that way sometimes.
Luz: I know it probably doesn’t need saying, but you won’t ever need to work or want for our attention. Mine, my Mom’s, King’s, or even Hooty’s, if you want his.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Amity is completely stunned when she learns Eda's a mother.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: In canon-Season 3, Belos' body slowly fell apart, then was burned by boiling rain before Eda, King, and Raine stomped on his remaining goop. Here, his body disintegrates from attempting to use his glyph tattoos in the Human Realm before the Hexsquad crushes his body under the Philip statue in Gravesfield.
  • Disney Death: To free the Collector, Belos kills King to use his blood, which has a deep effect on the deity. The Collector helps Camila revive King by removing her coven sigil, fully unlocking Camila's magic.
  • The Dog Bites Back: After learning that Philip killed off several Golden Guards over the centuries as Belos and not being able to remember the exact number, Hunter angrily posts the video Amity took of his mindscape on Penstagram as revenge. After the video goes viral, the citizens of the Isles protest at the castle and help the CAT's storm it.
  • Driven by Envy: This is the reason Mattholomule had it out for Gus: while Gus is a Grade Skipper at the top of his class, Mattholomule's barely getting by even with his parents hiring tutors so he'll improve in school, ultimately admitting Gus is more talented than he gives himself credit for.
  • Dude Magnet: When Eda gains her harpy mode, the head demon hunter calls her sexy and Edric is described as having his eyes pop out from seeing her.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: After Eda learns that her will is in effect due to becoming an owl beast (despite being fully in her right mind), the kids start teasing her by talking about what they’d want to keep while the will was taking effect. But as soon as Pibbles suggests calling Demon Control when Eda continues to object to everything going on, everyone immediately stops joking around, with Emira even commenting that he’s taking the joke too far, not realizing he was being serious.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: The story ends with King recovering from his near death following Belos' death, the Collector leaving for another world but promising to return, Alador beginning to make amends with his children and Vee while finalizing his divorce from Odalia and also getting some Ship Tease with Darius, Amity and Vee splitting their time between the Human and Demon Realms, Lilith being re-accepted as family by Eda as her relationship with Luz slowly recovers, and Luz's palisman finally hatching with the entire Noceda-Clawthorne family and Raine welcoming her to their world.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: While on duty with the CATT's, Camila uses her least favorite nickname from Eda, "Milly".
  • Epic Fail: While working on Salty's ship during the selkidomus hunt, Edric and Emira show themselves to be so incompetent at manual labor that they end up being used as live bait to compensate for all the damages caused.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Both Amity and Emira react accordingly flustered to Eda's harpy mode as well.
  • Everyone Knew Already: Clara's always known Amity pushed her off on the twins to get out of hanging out with her along with her love of Azura.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Even though Amity noticed how much Hunter and Caleb look alike, she never pieced together that Caleb was from Gravesfield despite passing the statue of the Wittebane brothers several times.
  • Fake-Out Make-Out: Parodied and namedropped by Eda with Camila the day they met. To keep from being spotted by Lilith in the halls of St. Epiderm, Eda positions herself and Camila so they look like they're doing this from behind: in reality, their noses are touching. After Lilith has passed, Camila acts flustered despite their lips not even connecting.
Camila: What even was that just now?
Eda: What, that? A fakeout-makeout, duh. Had to fool Lilith somehow.
Camila: (throws up her arms) You could have warned me, first!
Eda: (rolls her eyes) Oh, come on, it wasn’t even real! Your kiss virginity is still intact.
  • Fan Art: During and following the story's completion, images were provided such as scenes and character designs. Twitter user Daisy_Sutekina also provided artwork for Luz's Owl Beast form, as seen here.
  • Five-Finger Discount: Luz steals several items Amity couldn't buy at Mal-Mart and stuffs them all in her hair. Eda proudly declares they'll make a crook out of her yet.
  • Forced Out of the Closet: Narrowly averted: The reason why Amity hated the twins is because they almost did this to her, having stolen her diary and posted the pages all over their school without realizing she wrote about her female crushes in it.
  • Forceful Kiss:
    • After getting together, Luz kisses Amity's cheek while they're using the photo booth with their friends before Grom ends.
    • Masha plants a similar peck on Vee while she's thanking her friends for fixing up the shack.
  • The Gadfly:
    • Eda, Edric and Emira make a habit of teasing Amity about her feelings and later her relationship with Luz (in different ways and varying levels of embarrassment, of course).
    • Luz and Amity tease the potential relationship between Willow and Hunter in the epilogue, due to Gus running off when they brought him along to research Caleb's life in the Human Realm.
  • Giver of Lame Names: Alador initially calls the Abomatons "Armored Goobots"; his children all agree that he needs a marketing team.
  • Godzilla Threshold:
    • When Eda starts to succumb to her curse, she pleads with the Owl Beast to attack Lilith as soon as she transforms.
    • In order to have another shot at re-doing the Day of Unity, Belos has to free the Collector so they can make another eclipse happen.
    • As per canon, the only way to stop the second Draining Spell is to use the curse of a Clawthorne to corrupt it. Only here, it's Lilith who's disguised as Raine.
  • Gold Digger: Given Edric's statement about Odalia getting more than she brought with her when she married into the Blight family, she's implied to be this.
  • Goggles Do Nothing: Subverted. Luz wears flight goggles on the trip to King's island to counter wind resistance because she's the one flying Owlbert.
  • Graceful Loser:
    • Boscha chooses to get over her crush on Amity since she can see she's into Luz.
    • Raine accepts that Eda still loves Camila and gives their support for their relationship after they get back together.
  • Grew a Spine: Vee does this after Philip uses her, Amity and Lilith to obtain the Collector's mirror and leaves them for dead, draining the stonesleeper of its energy as it's charging at her.

    H to P
  • Hairpin Lockpick: Luz utilizes one of these twice in order to free beast Eda from her restraints before and during the petrification ceremony.
  • Hammerspace Hair: Despite still having a pixie cut, Luz inherited this trait from Eda and is able to store several clothes, toys and accessories within. Amity wonders if they're Pocket Dimensions.
  • Happily Adopted: Season 3 shows that Darius seems to have adopted Hunter while Camila now sees Vee as another daughter.
  • Hated by All: Hunter definitely becomes this in Season 2 due to his Chronic Backstabbing Disorder and loyalty to Emperor Belos: he drugs the Owl House residents so he can claim the portal to the Human Realm, strands Vee in the Demon Realm so he could capture her in case Belos wasn't pleased with just the portal, and his team-up with Adrian Graye gets him in even more hot water with the Junior Bad Girl Coven since he spent a week posing as a new student with a concealment stone to try and usurp their attempts to protest the Coven system. His actions cause Luz of all people to get angry with him and Vee goes as far as to declare her own hatred for all he's done.
  • Her Girlfriend's Jacket: After getting her Grudgby varsity jacket, Amity has Luz wear it to let people know they're dating (and to live out her jock fantasy of getting to do that.) In turn, Luz gives her Eda's old jacket (which she passed down to Luz) and restores while replacing the "E" with an "L", as seen here.
  • Hereditary Curse: Luz ended up inheriting Eda's curse, which led to Eda leaving Luz and Camila to find the one who cursed her five years ago.
  • Heroic BSoD: Luz goes numb from shock and despair upon learning Lilith cursed Eda and thus, her by extension: she snaps out of it by the next morning. She's implied to have gone through a second one after Hunter betrays everyone to get the portal.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Raine leads away the Coven Heads pursuing them, Eda and Camila away from the latter two so Eda can get Camila to a safe distance due to her injuries.
  • Heroic Vow: Upon coming across all the deceased Golden Guards, Darius declares he'll end Philip himself for Hunter's sake and avenge his mentor along with all those who came before the latter two.
  • He's Back!: Or "It's Back!" Either one works. After Amity had nearly drained her abominations of their Titan's Blood to power Vee's test portal and Lilith's time pool tracker, King gives her a rag stained with his blood for it to consume which brings it back to full strength. Heck, it makes it even more powerful.
Amity: He looks... good. Strong. Even stronger than before!
Luz: That does make sense. We estimated the bottle only had a drop or two [of Titan's Blood] in there to begin with, and its got a lot more of that now.
  • Hidden Depths: Darius' family were well-known winemakers before they were Abomination masters.
  • High-Pressure Emotion: As thanks for Vee facing her fear of returning to the Boiling Isles to help her, Clara gives Vee a cheek kiss close to the corner of her lips that leaves her red-faced with steam coming out her ears and her brain turned to mush. When Masha complains about it, Clara gives them an identical kiss leaving both her partners spluttering messes.
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: Amity has no musical talent whatsoever to the point that she can't whistle without irritating everyone. That's why the Bard track is the only one she isn't studying. Not even lessons with Raine do anything to help her, not that Raine will ever admit it.
  • Hope Spot: After leaving the portal key in the human realm, Amity hopes that Edric and Emira find it. Only after returning to the Owl House does she learn they're in the demon realm, meaning she just accidentally stranded them there.
    • Before then, Lilith has one In-Universe. During their duel at the Emperor's Castle, Eda remarks that "I know we don’t always get along, but we need to work together on this." Lilith initially believes that Eda is referring to the two sisters and wants to make amends... only for Eda to reveal that she's talking to the Owl Beast and asks it to kill Lilith as soon as Eda permanently transforms.
  • Hormone-Addled Teenager: This is pretty much why Eda, the twins and Gwendolyn makes cracks about Amity and Luz, because them living together under the same roof could make them these as their relationship evolves. There's also how the Blight siblings react to Eda's harpy form after witnessing her first transformation.
  • Hypocrite: At the protest, Boscha tells everyone to not lose their tempers, causing Luz to remark that she's one to talk. Boscha later acknowledges this when chewing out Luz for blowing up at Steve.
  • An Ice Person: The first spell Amity learns is the ice glyph. The author states it's meant to symbolize her canon status as a Defrosting Ice Queen.
  • I Choose to Stay: Along with Amity wanting a normal life, Jacob decides to stay in the Demon Realm because he realized how wrong he was about witches and demons being evil. It doesn't wipe away his Conspiracy Theorist personality, though.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: The main reason Amity ran away; she was tired of only being known as a Blight and wanted to lead an ordinary life.
  • I Lied: Turns out Viney lied about her age to get into the CATT's, who don't allow kids to join. When Camila takes charge, Viney's kept on but prohibited from going on missions.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Terra stabs Camila with Dos' knife, which causes her to start bleeding out.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • Luz is studying in the potions track at school.
    • The ice, fire and plant glyphs are discovered the same ways they were in canon; in a snowflake, a scorch mark left by Boscha's fire spell on a grudgby ball and on a flower.
    • The human protagonist still gets enrolled in all of Hexside's tracks.
    • Lilith splits the curse between and a family member and herself then has to take up residency with her parents.
    • Amity ends up utilizing abomination magic, gets a job at Bonesborough Library and dyes her hair lavender. She also bonds with Ghost, who becomes her palisman.
    • Gwendolyn only accepts Eda's curse after dealing with a family member she didn't know had it and promises to help find a proper cure with Lilith.
    • Gus and Mattholomule end up becoming friends and scare Bria out of the Looking Glass Ruins.
    • Eda and the Owl Beast make peace with each other, allowing Eda to gain a harpy transformation.
    • Katya, Derwin and Amber are captured by Darius and Eberwolf and sent to the conformatorium, with Raine allowing themself to be captured by their fellow coven heads after fighting them so Eda can escape.
    • King is adopted by Eda and thanks to Hooty (who still eats the letter from Tarak), he gains his sonic scream.
    • Hunter still manages to claim the portal key and with it, the portal for Belos to use on the Day of Unity.
    • Due to circumstances beyond their control, Camila decides to provide Vee shelter with her.
    • Kikimora's life is still threatened and she attempts to escape to Palm Stings with Terra on her heels. Terra warns our human protagonist that the Emperor looks forward to seeing her soon, and Belos names Raine (now faking their brainwashing) as the new Bard Coven Head before revealing his face.
    • Lilith still journeys into the past with her fellow human to meet Philip Wittebane, he learns the light glyph because of said human, backstabs them and is given swift payback but makes off with the Collector's mirror. Luz soon discovers that Philip is Belos before he became emperor.
    • Luz still didn't receive a palisman at Hexside's adoption day while Willow and Gus do, implied to be because she hasn't decided on a long term life goal. As the above events occur, Luz is given a piece of palistrom wood and carves it into an egg, wanting it to choose its final form for themself.
    • King gets his letter from Tarak and it's decided that Luz (plus Eda and Camila) will journey with him to Titan Trapper Island to recruit the trappers as allies against Belos. The trip ends with them learning King's a titan.
    • As the above events unfold, Hunter goes undercover at Hexside and befriends the Emerald Entrails in order to recruit them to the Emperor's Coven. When that fails, Graye tries to brand them causing Gus to unleash a school-wide illusion, Gus incapacitates Graye with traumatic memories and takes his magic amplifier. Steve and Severine also leave the Emperor's Coven.
    • Luz still receives Eda's Grudgby jacket.
    • The Coven Heads' attempt to travel into Belos' mind is interfered with by Hunter, who along with our human protagonist gets sent in instead. Hunter ends up learning the truth about Belos, his being a grimwalker and defies him while our human hero figures out the purpose of the Day of Unity. It takes a return spell powered by Titan's Blood to bring them back.
    • Philip still double-crosses the Collector makes a deal with Odalia and Alador. This leads to the creation of the abomatons.
    • The protagonist discovers that glyphs don't work in the Human Realm due to a lack of magic.
    • Both Blight parents learn the types of magic they use in canon through the artifacts Belos gives them.
    • Alador has a Heel–Face Turn when he learns the truth of Belos' plans and divorces Odalia when she admits to having known the whole time and trying to benefit from it.
    • Raine decides the best way to stop the Draining Spell for good is to have a Clawthorne disguise herself as them and corrupt it with her curse.
    • Eda and Lilith make amends and the latter starts her Odd Friendship with Hooty.
    • Even though canon-Season 3 isn't utilized, Luz gains a Super Mode while Belos learns King's a Titan and murders a main character, and Willow and Hunter are given a Maybe Ever After ending.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Lilith learns Luz inherited Eda's curse during their Wizard Duel in "Pain of a Sorceress", as her sister didn't want her to know out of fear that Luz would be taken away for the sake of finding a cure or being forced into the Emperor's Coven to do so.
    • Willow and Gus learn of Luz's curse in the beginning of "On the Island of the Demon King". Edric and Emira have already been made aware of it while Gwendolyn discovers it later on.
    • Lilith learns Vee's a basilisk in "Elsewho and Elsewhy" after piecing all the clues together.
    • Amity confesses her problems with her family to Luz in "Somebody to Lean On". Amity tells Hunter two chapters later and since they're in Belos' mind, he learns them too. Hunter posting the video of Belos' origins which recorded this along with it means everyone on the Isles knows now.
    • Sometime prior to "Hassle in the Castle", Belos heard about what conspired on Titan Trapper Island and learned that King's a Titan.
    • In "Worlds Apart", the twins, Clara, Masha, Sam and Tom are informed of Belos' dual identity and the damage the abomatons have caused by Amity, Luz, Hunter, and Vee. Alador later learns of the ramifications from his daughter.
  • It Only Works Once: Whenever the Abomaton is defeated, they're modified so that whatever method stopped it doesn't do the job the next time.
  • It's All My Fault:
    • Edric and Emira came to realize they were largely responsible for Amity running away because they picked on her instead of helping her with their mother.
    • Amity later feels this way when she refuses to hear the twins out when the Golden Guard comes for Philip's diary and he gets away with it. Luckily they get the echo mouse with the info, but Amity knows she has to make it up to them.
    • Luz blames herself for Hunter backstabbing everyone and taking the portal, saying if she wasn't so trusting, it never would've happened. Amity comforts and tells her to never feel bad about wanting to help someone in need because that's part of who she is.
  • It's Personal: Eda holds complete contempt towards Lilith for cursing her because Luz inherited it and has to suffer as much as her. She was also eager to pay back Hunter for hurting her kid, saying she'll be first in line to do it.
    • Darius is beyond angered and disgusted when he learns just how many grimwalkers Belos created along with Hunter and the previous Golden Guard on top of killing them all and vows to personally kill him.
  • Karmic Death: After 400 years of trying to kill all witchkind with their own magic, Belos dies because he attempted to use magic in the Human Realm, with the glyphs carved into his body shriveling up and disintegrating before Amity, Luz, Hunter, Willow and Gus drop the statue of him onto his body.
  • Karma Houdini: Unlike canon, Philip succeeds in betraying the Collector and escapes to the Human Realm on the Day of Unity before anyone could stop him, taking the portal with him...
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: ...however, Philip has been exposed as a witch hunter beforehand, losing most of the support of the Boiling Isles and the Draining Spell isn't activated, sparing all witches branded with coven sigils.
  • Lampshade Hanging: After seeing Luz's Hammerspace Hair capability and all the things she stole during their shopping trip, Amity questions why she didn't put all the things she did buy into her hair so they didn't have to carry their bags home. Luz immediately shows she didn't even think of that.
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • Everyone who supported the throne even after learning about the Draining Spell were put on trial. Terra, Graye, Hettie Cutburn, and Vitimir, being the only Coven Heads still loyal to Belos, were given life sentences.
    • To defeat Odalia and reclaim the portal key, Alador reminds her that since his father had them sign a prenup before they got married, everything related to Blight Industries is still under his name, especially their fortune. He agrees to give her a monthly allowance if she surrenders, but it's clear she'll only barely get by on it.
  • Left Hanging: The identity of Luz's palisman isn't revealed at the end of the story, remaining unseen.
  • Like Mother, Like Daughter: Eda catches on to Luz's feelings for Amity because she acts the same way Camila did around Eda, being very physically affectionate and always blushing around her.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Eda never told Lilith or Gwen about Luz inheriting the curse because they were both only thinking of their own goals (Lilith kept bringing up the idea of Luz joining the Emperor's Coven while Gwen tried to rope her into forcing Eda to try her fake cures, which made her uncomfortable.)
  • Love Triangle:
    • Between Clara, Vee and Masha; Masha is attracted to Vee especially once they learns she's a basilisk, is open with their feelings and warns Clara that they’ll date Vee if she doesn't ask her out. However, it's implied that Clara does have subtle feelings for Vee, who values Clara's opinion over her other friends. However, all three teens have feelings for the other two. It gets resolved when they decide to enter a polyamorous relationship with each other.
    • Also between Eda, Camila and Raine; while Eda and Raine were still High-School Sweethearts, Eda spent her 20's and early 30's with Camila raising Luz before leaving to find the one who cursed her. Raine still has a crush on Eda and when they meet again and they ask if she still has feelings for Camila, she can't provide an answer. When Camila comes close to death, Eda kisses her while trying to keep her conscious and again when she heals herself. Eda is left wondering where she and Camila stand but Raine seems to have accepted Eda still loves Camila.
  • Luminescent Blush: Luz starts doing this around Amity when she realized her crush, with Amity doing so before.
    • Amity and Boscha both do this when they flirt by winking at one another.
    • Vee does this when the Cabin seven trio accuse her and Clara of liking each other. She does it again when they learn what type of basilisk species she is.
    • Luz does this everytime the twins flirt with her, and they do it often.
    • Eda gets a brief flush after accidentally calling Camila beautiful and they share one after Camila lands on top of her on arrival to Titan Trapper Island.
  • Marshmallow Hell:
    • Upon reuniting with Raine, Eda pulls them into a hug but unknowingly flusters them because she's pressing their face into her chest.
    • Gwendolyn puts Luz through this while embracing her when she, Amity and Vee come to see Lilith about finding the time pools.
  • Meaningful Echo: In the Season 1 finale, Amity tells Belos that he lost to her because he had challenged a Blight. In the final chapter, she repeats this as he's dissolving from his glyphs lacking magic and destroying his body.
  • Meaningful Name: Like Vee, Dos, another basilisk, was originally named #2 but chose his new name from the spanish word for "Two".
    • On another note, each basilisk besides the Greater one is a different type: Dos is a Fringed Basilisk and Vee, much to the amusement of the Cabin Seven trio, is a Fat Tailed Basilisk (since they store excess fat from their bodies in their tails.)
  • Meaningful Rename: Because the Bards Against the Throne get more movement in their goal and more people wish to join their rebellion against Emperor Belos, they go from the BATT's to the CATT's (Covens Against the Throne.) Or rather, they create a sub-division going by that name.
  • Moment Killer: See Almost Kiss above.
  • Mistaken for Romance: Luz tends to go into shipper mode all the time, seeing any moment her mothers spend together as potential rekindling of their past romance or immediately trying to help Gus impress Bria only to jump ship when Bria shows her true colors. She does however struggle to wrap her head around the idea of someone liking Hunter, not seeing Willow's attraction to him and being unnerved when she briefly thinks that Boscha developed a crush on him before Amity explains how Boscha felt betrayed by his deception.
Luz: Yeah... that does make more sense than the whirlwind romance I was picturing...
Amity: (chuckles) That’s because you can’t help but see romance everywhere you look.
  • Mundane Utility: In order to cheer Luz up after learning about her curse, Amity uses the Wailing Star's magic to summon the Good Witch Azura so she can read the two a bedtime story. Granted, Azura herself does suggest finding a cure for Luz's curse, but Amity doesn't believe they have the time do that.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Amity's placed in the oracle track when she starts attending Hexside and she notes how dangerous it'd be if Odalia had access to their techniques. Odalia is a member of the Oracle coven in the show.
    • While interacting with Gus, Edric and Emira mention how they'd pull so many pranks if they had his magic, a nod to them being illusionists in canon.
    • During Graye's raid on Hexside, Mattholomule runs into Steve and talks to him about the Emperor's Coven, which was inspired by this MoringMark comic strip. Luz acting as Amity's personal cheerleader during a Grudgby game may have been inspired by this comic.
  • Named by the Adaptation:
    • The human doppleganger of Amity from "A Lying Witch and a Warden" is known as Clara Heartfield.
    • The Eye-Eating Prisoner is called Eyegore, which doubles as a Punny Name.
    • The other Gravesfield Teens besides Vee's goth friend are named Tom (the laidback guy) and Sam (the ENBY).
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Unlike Bria, Luz and Willow encourage Gavin and Angmar into believing their magic is strong. Unfortunately when the boys backstab Bria, they take the girls' words to heart and try to take the Galdorstones for themselves.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Masha embodies this given their gothic nature and love of all things freaky, including Vee.
  • No Name Given: The blonde guy in the Oracle track is only known as "Beanie Boy" since Amity can't remember his name.
  • Non-Humans Lack Attributes: Discussed and Justified. When Vee shapeshifts into her normal form at the beach, Amity briefly freaks out and says she's naked since she's used to seeing her in her clothed humanoid form. Vee has to point out and demonstrate that she doesn't have anything to hide to begin with by putting on a bikini top that holds nothing.
Vee: I’m a reptile, it’s not like I even have breasts to hide!
Amity: (embarrassed) I’m sorry. You’re right, you don’t exactly have anything to hide. Still, this is like seeing Donald Duck without his shirt...
  • No-Sell: Nothing Amity tries in Belos/Philip's mind works. When she attacks him with her abomination he grabs the goo, backhands her to takes the flask and sends it back to the real world. When she tries to burn all his memories at once, it only lasts until he can put them all out.
  • Not a Date: In the epilogue, Willow and Hunter are teased by Luz and Amity for going on a date, telling them they're simply researching Caleb's life in the Human realm with Gus. Once Gus leaves to go birdwatching, the girls tease the potential couple a bit more.
  • "Oh, Crap!" Smile: Luz displays one that shows off way too many of her teeth when she sees that Gwendolyn came with Eda to collect the kids on King's island.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Months after the Day of Unity, Boscha is the only person who refuses to forgive Hunter for infiltrating her protest group.
  • Only One Name: Amity only goes by her first name on the Boiling Isles, going as far as to crossing out her last name after writing it on a note and not having it on her paperwork for admission to Hexside (which Principal Bump credits to being a human thing.) She willingly subverts this in the Season 1 finale, where she uses her last name during a Badass Boast against Belos.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Luz makes it pretty clear that she's mad when she declares she'll kick Hunter's ass after he steals the portal. This lingers well into the next chapter, as she's completely shut herself off from everyone except Amity and is angry with Camila after finding out she's leading the rebellion. Eda remarks that she regrets wanting Luz to hit her teen angst phase.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: To cement how angry Luz is, she flat out ignores Kikimora who's going crazy from paranoia (although she initially struggled to do it and later admits that she wants to help her to Amity.)
King: (worried) Uh, I'm not the only one who thinks that was wildly out of character, right?
  • Out of Focus: The intermissions set on Earth and the interludes "The Noceda House" and "Knocking Just Once on Hooty's Door" are the only chapters where Amity doesn't appear.
  • Parental Substitute:
    • Amity states in "Old Blood, Young Souls" that Eda's the closest she ever had to a real mother.
    • "The Beach Episode" shows that Darius is trying to act as a guardian for Hunter while Vee now sees Camila as a mother figure.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Boscha organizes the protest against the Coven Day Parade both to support the current multi-trackers (which includes Amity) and her grudgby team, as Skara and Cat have expressed interest in dual-tracking.
    • As a way to begin making amends with her past mistakes, Lilith helps Amity and Vee talk to Philip per Luz's request. Later, she takes Vee to see the thriving basilisk race in the Deadwardian Era.
  • Please Get Off Me: After falling to the ground on arrival to Titan Trapper Island, Camila (the last to fall) lands on top of Eda who's lying face down on the ground. Eda turning around puts them almost directly in each other's faces, causing her to finish saying this and the two getting up with twin blushes on their faces.
  • Pom-Pom Girl: Luz acts as Amity's personal cheerleader during a grudgby game. It's mentioned she failed to join the actual cheer team, but that didn't stop her from making her own outfit.
  • Pragmatic Adaptation: Some chapters combine episode plots for the sake of keeping the story moving:
    • "Chapter 6: The Intruder in the Elements" has "The Intruder" and "Adventures in the Elements", with Eda taking Amity, Luz and King to the Knee so Amity can learn her first spell and the human girl has her first encounter with the Owl Beast. The moonlight conjuring and body swaps are mentioned to have happened between Chapters 5 & 6.
    • "Chapter 8: The First Week" fuses "The First Day" and "Wing It Like Witches", detailing Amity's first week at Hexside with the addition of the grudgby game against Boscha's gang.
    • "Chapter 19: On the Island of the Demon King" fuses "Echoes of the Past" (King proving his supposed lineage by returning to the island he was born on) and "Keeping Up A-fear-ances" (Gwen trying to use her latest "cure" on Eda which leads to another family member transforming) with the beginning being based off of "Escaping Expulsion"'s.
    • "Chapter 30: Elsewho and Elsewhy" takes a brief dip into the excursion into the In Between Realm from "Yesterday's Lie" before continuing on to the protagonist joining Lilith on the trip to the Deadwardian Era in "Elsewhere and Elsewhen".
    • "Chapter 32: Any Sport in a Labyrinth" combines "Any Sport in a Storm" and "Labyrinth Runners" with a touch of "Edge of the World": Adrian Graye Vernworth helps Hunter get coven recruits from Hexside by giving him a concealment stone to hide his identity. At the same time, Luz, Eda, King and Camila set off for Titan Trapper Island for a week after getting King's letter, leaving Amity and Vee under Hooty's care and she bonds with Willow and Gus while Willow creates her flyer derby team, of which Hunter joins as Caleb Jasper Bloodwilliams.
  • Private Detective: After Amity disappeared, Odalia hired one to find her and had to pay more for his services when the twins later disappeared. He kept tabs on Clara in case she knew something.
  • Psycho Knife Nut: Dos counts due to his use of an enchanted knife and because his time as a prisoner left him with trauma that causes him to act on impulse when threatened with getting locked up again.
  • Punny Name: Luz creates several names her Owl Beast (Owlivia, Owlbaquerque, Owlson), but the Owlet doesn't understand the jokes.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: Luz is mentioned to have mastered this due to learning how to do it from King. Vee is also a master, at least in making Clara and Masha unable to resist saying no to her.

    R-Y
  • Rage Breaking Point:
    • Upon seeing Gwendolyn convince the Blight twins to help her with her latest scheme to cure Eda right after watching King's Heroic BSoD in exchange for information to return home, Luz lays into her for never taking Eda's feelings into consideration, which leads to Luz transforming into the Owl Beast in front of Gwen.
    • After Philip betrays Amity, Vee and Lilith and leaves them to deal with the Stonesleeper, Vee gets angry that every attempt to get her back home by that point has ended in failure and without thinking, she absorbs the Stonesleeper's magic as it comes toward her.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Gwendolyn takes two from Luz and Eda over the course of five minutes regarding her stubborn attitude and selfishness regarding her attempts to cure Eda's curse, and why they never told her Luz was cursed too, which made her feel just as ashamed.
    • Amity really lets Belos know that all his crimes against witchkind have made her see just how malevolent he is.
You’re not a man, Belos. You’re not even a witch. You’re so much lower than either of those. You are a monster!
  • The Red Mage: Viney, Jerbo and Barcus study the same dual-tracks as in canon while Amity takes Luz's place as Hexside's first all-track student studying everything (because she wants to see what all the tracks have to offer before making her final choices) except for Bard.
    • Mattholomule still takes up construction and illusions later while all the Banshees except Boscha decide to dual-track too, with Skara studying bard and oracle, Cat healing and construction, and Amelia plant and beast keeping.
  • Refusal of the Call: Part of Amity's I Just Want to Be Normal decision is not wanting to be forced to be special, which is why she doesn't accept Adeghast's quest. Eda says she has to burn such papers twice a week so Luz doesn't answer the Call to Adventure.
  • Related in the Adaptation: "Any Sport in a Labyrinth" reveals that Mattholomule and Steve's father is Mason, the head of the Construction Coven.
  • Retcon: As the story began during the mid-season hiatus of Season 2, Masha, Vee's enby goth friend, was originally written as a girl named Dahlia. Following the premiere of "Thanks to Them", the author decided to rename Dahlia to Masha and included scenes that revealed she came out as non-binary in "Worlds Apart".
  • The Reveal: As Clara and Masha reveal to Vee in "Elsewho and Elsewhy", Edric and Emira have been staying in Vee's cabin instead of going home after getting back to the human realm as the cabin seven group told them about their parents locking Vee in a room with barred windows when she was disguised as Amity.
    • The Time Skip that occurs between Seasons 2 & 3 was three months as revealed in "Worlds Apart". In that time, Masha and Clara came out to their parents while Sam and Tom had a Relationship Upgrade. Masha also came out as Non-Binary during this time.
  • The Runaway: Amity only ran away from home because Owlbert stole her Azura Vol. 3. After her first adventure with Eda, she officially becomes one and elects to stay in the Demon Realm, far from her family's (specifically her mother's) reach.
  • Sand In My Eyes: Everytime Eda wipes away tears in "Elsewho and Elsewhy", she says it's because of wood chips and not because she's getting emotional from her father's compliments.
  • Second Episode Introduction: Luz doesn't make her debut until near the end of the second chapter. Vee also makes a silent cameo.
  • Secret-Keeper: In the beginning, only Eda, Camila, King and Hooty know about Luz being cursed. Amity learns it after witnessing a transformation for herself, Edric and Emira are informed about it after getting stuck in the Demon Realm, and Luz tells Willow and Gus herself after returning to school.
  • Sequel Hook: The second intermission ends with the portal key being shown in Clara's bag, her unaware of what it can do.
  • Shed the Family Name: After choosing to stay in the demon realm, Amity stops using her last name due to her hatred for her family.

  • Shipper on Deck: Luz doesn't bother to keep it a secret that she hopes her moms will get back together, despite them saying otherwise.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Sitting on the Roof: For their first date, Amity and Luz decide on stargazing from the roof of the Owl House. This is what led to Amity discovering the light glyph.
  • Slipping a Mickey: To acquire the portal key, Hunter gives everyone hot chocolate laced with sleeping nettles and suggests his Take a Third Option in the meantime until they all fall asleep unable to stop him.
  • Something Else Also Rises: Upon reuniting, Masha gives Vee a Big Damn Kiss that not only leaves her with a full-face blush, but causes her skin to change from the dark complexion she uses in the Human Realm to the green of her basilisk form.
  • Spared by the Adaptation:
    • As the events of "Thanks to Them" don't happen, Flapjack isn't injured by Belos and Hunter doesn't experience a Disney Death.
    • Because "Watching and Dreaming" is also excluded, Luz doesn't undergo a Disney Death at Belos' hands.
  • Spark of the Rebellion: Between Willow and Gus protesting Eda's petrification and Raine destroying all the petrified statues in the Conformatorium's yard, the citizens of Bonesborough start to rebel against Belos' empire and the Coven system.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: To a degree. Owlbert may be Eda's palisman, but Luz has been trained to understand him at certain times.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Boscha's pink-haired mother is said to be almost as tall as Eda in harpy mode.
  • Strict Parents Make Sneaky Kids: Odalia's rules and expectations led to Amity using her Azura books to escape her life, then to her actually escaping by staying on the Boiling Isles.
  • Super Mode: Besides "Harpy Eda", a downplayed example would be "Owlet Luz", the end result of Luz and her Owl Beast's bond. While still slightly avian, her wings are too small for flight and her feathers are downed.
  • Synchronous Episodes: Chapters 32 & 33 take place during the same week, the former focusing on Amity staying at home to study for her exams while the latter shows the Clawthorne-Noceda's on their expedition to Titan Trapper Island.
  • The Talk: Eda decides to give Luz and Amity this since they're dating and living under the same roof, plus Amity only knows the human variant while witch reproduction is more versatile. Luz tries to weasel out of it and fails, so you can imagine the awkwardness both girls had to feel the next day.
  • Take a Third Option: When the case of Both Sides Have a Point desolves into a massive argument, Hunter suggests the portal key be kept in the Human Realm with someone timing when and for how long the twins and Clara cross into the Demon Realm to see Amity; that way, the key never has to enter the latter realm again (or at least until Belos is overthrown). Although everyone agrees, it's subverted when Hunter admits he only suggested it to stall for time while the sleeping nettles knocked them out.
  • The Tease: The twins flirt with Luz for the sake of ticking off Amity. Luz knows what they're doing, but doesn't stop them because she enjoys their compliments.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: As much as Boscha and Hunter hate each other, they'll work together long enough to save Amity from the upgraded Abomaton trying to kidnap her.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • "One Man’s Trash Is Another Witch’s Treasure" has Amity test the theory that Eda will give her anything she asks for after bringing her to a human dump for garbage to sell. Eda offers her Luz's hand in marriage, and Amity blushes bright crimson.
    • In "Bringing Home the Bacon", Edric & Emira point out how nothing's happened to the Owl House residents in the past week and are glad the universe seems to have forgotten them. Eda jumps in and says they've just jinxed them and when Luz tries to argue against it, Pibbles knocks on the door, causing Eda to shoot the twins a look that screams "I was right!"
    • "The Beach Episode" has Luz and Amity look forward to life on the Isles becoming boring after everything they had to deal with. Soon after, an Abomaton arrives and attacks them, causing the girls to realize they jinxed themselves as "the universe realized they were happy".
  • That Came Out Wrong: After witnessing Luz's first transformation, Camila blames Eda for their daughter being a monster. This irks Eda into calmly telling her to never say that again and that she's just as scared of the curse as Luz is going to be. Camila immediately regrets what she said.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: Played with. Edric and Emira are stuck in the demon realm since Amity tossed the portal key into the human realm. They do nothing to contribute to the Owl House's finances in the first week and a half they stay there and when they do contribute, they fail miserably. They make up for it by getting enough money to end those concerns.
  • There Are No Rules: Eda tries to help Amity loosen up in one chapter by saying that this is the one rule of the Bad Girl Coven. Unfortunately, this backfires for Eda as over the next few days, Amity slacks off on her chores and schoolwork in favor of watching crystal ball, forgoes bathing entirely while acting like a total slob, and eventually gets sick from drinking an entire bottle of Eda's apple blood. After getting parenting advice from Camila, Eda learns that Amity is someone who needs structure to function, so she sets up some basic rules for Amity to follow.
  • Time Skip: Due to paranoia and overprotectiveness from Eda and Camila, Amity and Luz don't return to Hexside after the petrification ceremony until three weeks later.
    • 3 months pass between "#CancelBelos" and "The Beach Episode": in that time, the CAT's help create a new government, all of Belos' followers have been incarcerated, all knowledge Belos had banned about wild magic is being released to the public, Luz has bonded more with her Owl Beast (the knowledge of which is public now), Darius has adopted Hunter, and Vee now sports a new look mixing her true form and her human body while in public.
  • Troll: When Pibbles announces that because Eda's will leaves the house to Amity due to her being transformed into the owl beast, the kids waste no time messing with her by claiming stuff, choosing rooms and deciding to throw out everything in Eda's room and let Hooty eat her nest. Can also be seen as payback in Amity and Luz's case for Eda giving them The Talk.
  • Tranquil Fury: When Eda learns that Lilith was the one who cursed her and by extention, Luz, she tells Amity and Luz to leave the Emperor's Castle as she prepares to kill Lilith.
Lilith: You're... surprisingly calm about all of this, Eda. Has this revelation perhaps made you come to your senses?
  • Twice Shy: Amity and Luz already showed shades of this before they started dating. Even being together for over two months doesn't lessen it, and their Almost Kiss makes them flustered over whether they should just kiss and get it over with.
  • Uncertain Doom: Eda isn't certain if Harvey got captured by the other coven heads or worse. It's later revealed that he was locked up in the conformatorium.
  • Unfortunate Names: Vee's specific species is a Fat Tailed Basilisk, which can store the body's fat in their tails. The Cabin Seven trio wastes no time in making jokes about Vee having a big butt.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: Masha lampshades this by telling Vee that Sam and Tom have it, but doesn't explain anything and only tells her the initials. Vee later questions if Clara and Masha have it, causing Clara to glare at Masha for "corrupting Vee's innocence".
  • The Unreveal: Luz’s palisman is never described in detail, with the author’s note describing that it takes inspiration from theories on how the actual show will end:
I’ve actually seen this proposed as an actual ending to the show. Luz’s palisman hatching, and it switches to the palisman’s POV, never revealing what it is, only that it’s born into a world where it’s loved and cared for, and will get to go on the next big adventure Luz goes on. I don’t think that’s how things will end, but I’ll still be satisfied with it.
  • Villainous Breakdown: The moment Hunter posts the video of Belos/Philip on Penstagram, Belos's mindscape begins to collapse as he loses his mind.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Amity and Hunter become this after the trip into Belos' mind, sharing banter but otherwise holding an amicable hatred due to everything that's happened between them.
  • Voice for the Voiceless: Since Eileen doesn't have a mouth and only speaks in mumbles, Bo acts as her Translator Buddy.
  • Walking the Earth: Downplayed. Vee left Gravesfield by bus to get as far away from Eda's portal (and Emperor Belos, by extension) as possible. After spending three months in New York City, she ended up back in Gravesfield hoping to travel cross-country to Las Vegas before deciding to settle down in the cabin she came through.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: It's never revealed at the end of the story if Kikimora and Captain Wolffe had escaped from Terra.
  • The Worf Effect: Despite having the increased power of the galdorstones, Gavin and Angmar are defeated by Luz and Willow since they utilized their weaknesses.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: When Amity summons the Good Witch Azura using the Wailing Star's magic, Azura herself believes that Amity wants her help going on a grand adventure instead of simply helping to comfort Luz after Amity learned about her curse.
Right, Azura was an adventure novel, and as kind and understanding as Azura was written to be, she was still a hotheaded young woman who chased after treasure and the call to action.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: "Old Blood, Young Souls" ends with everyone learning that Edric and Emira are stuck in the Demon Realm for the time being since Amity threw the portal key into the Human Realm so Belos couldn't claim the portal.
    • While the above example is later subverted in "The Previous Day's Fib" after the twins return home, Vee replaces them in being stranded after Hunter takes the portal and the key.
  • You Monster!: Amity labels Belos/Philip as this for his multiple crimes over the centuries, saying he's lower than a human or a witch. She repeats it when she sees he murdered King.
