    Neuschwabenland
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aag_6.png
Official Name: Neuschwabenlandnote
Ruling Party: Deutsche Gesellschaft für Polarforschungnote
Ideology: Antarctic Administrationnote

See its recap page here.

  • Abandoned Area: When Neuschwabenland's colonization efforts were recalled, the evacuation was hasty and abandoned many settlements that still retain their structure, such as a Swastika mounted on a roof. During the supply shortage, Mayr and Schirmacher can send a team to investigate the abandoned colonies to find munitions that could've been left behind.
  • Absurdly High-Stakes Game: Downplayed. The Neuschwabenland crew play poker games and wage that the winner gets a week off of snow clearance duty. It's torturous to do snow clearance for even four days, so the stakes are high for the crew.
  • Black Site: Neuschwabenland is a cold weather military equipment testing site used to experiment with new weapons that they want to keep away from the public eye and their rivals. If Schumann takes over, these experiments will be expanded to include the development of chemical and biological weapons.
  • Blatant Lies: The Neuschwabenland administration denies all accusations that they are conducting nuclear weapons testing. Meanwhile, there is a mechanic dedicated to developing and testing atomic weapons.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Neuschwabenland is targeted by the OAA in Operation Southern Cross, providing a common threat for the OFN to unite against. Once the Germans have been defeated, the OFN fractures between the United States, Australia, and New Zealand, revealing that their differences were the true challenge all along.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: If Heydrich takes over Germany and establishes an administration in Antarctica, Neuschwabenland gets annexed to the Ahnenerbe Antarktis Gruppe.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: In the wake of the German Civil War, all supply lines to Neuschwabenland are cut off and the men there are required to ration their supplies, until help can arrive. Managing these resources will be difficult, but if the base survives until a victor emerges in the civil war, contact will be reestablished and supplies come rushing back in. It's even better if Neuschwabenland is to be reorganized as a scientific or party administration, where everyone will be rewarded with pensions, awards, and job opportunities for their efforts.
  • Enemy Mine: As supplies continue to dwindle in the season of desperation, a mutiny breaks out against Mayr's loyalists, but both factions reconcile and unite to repel an attack by the SS.
  • Egopolis: The main research center is called Schirmacher Station, after Mayr's second-in-command and personal friend.
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • Though Mayr can reluctantly authorize the consumption of dead Ahnenerbe traitors to survive the supply shortage, some of the crew refuse to partake in the meal, considering death a better fate than consuming a fellow German. Thus, a mild rift emerges between those who have committed cannibalism and those who have not.
    • Investigating an abandoned colony, a crew of soldiers are disgusted to find out that some of its settlers were left behind during the evacuation and betrayed by their own country to freeze to death.
  • The Fellowship Has Ended: A villain protagonist example, as the Neuschwabenland leadership is split up after they are rescued and Germany maintains its status as a military administration. Mayr, Schirmacher, and Herrmann are reassigned by the German Society for Polar Research, Grasser is recalled to Germania for deployment, and Schumann returns to the Reich Research Council Main Office in Hamburg.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Neuschwabenland's affairs are largely ignored by the higher echelons in Germania. It's largely become a dumping ground for those deemed "failures" and reports on their progress are often ignored or rewarded with meager privileges.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: Neuschwabenland is commandeered by supporters of the Nazi regime, but at least they aren't helping Himmler's insane nuclear plans like the Ahnenerbe are. During the German Civil War, the two factions come to blows over Schumann's nuclear projects, with Neuschwabenland portrayed as the easier side to root for.
  • Multiple Endings:
    • If Neuschwabenland runs out of supplies during the Season of Desperation, all of the crew perishes from starvation, hypothermia, or suicide. Schumann and Grasser go out outside to kill themselves, while Mayr, Schirmacher, and Herrmann spend the last living moments joking and drinking with each other before the elements claim them too. By the end, Schirmacher Station is abandoned and reclaimed as the territory of millions of emperor penguins. On the political scene, Neuschwabenland is partitioned between the OFN and the Ahnenerbe.
    • If the Season of Desperation is weathered, a rescue Kriegsmarine ship rescues the surviving crew. If Speer or Bormann won the Civil War, Neuschwabenland can be kept as a military base, though it can also be converted into a scientific administration or party apparatus. Alternatively, Göring can win the Civil War and put Schumann in temporary control of Neuschwabenland, free to conduct more experiments.
  • No Party Like a Donner Party:
    • If Neuschwabenland runs out of supplies during the German Civil War, the inhabitants who don't starve to death will turn to cannibalism in a desperate attempt to stay alive.
    • When starvation rations are declared, the crew are so starved during the supply shortage that they cannibalize on the frozen bodies of SS mutineers. The situation may be so desperate that Mayr will allow it. Everyone tries to rationalize it, such as thinking that the mutineers had it coming or that other cultural groups have consumed their dead foes and thus it's a "very old human tradition". No matter the case, it ends up working and those who ate human flesh have the energy to play a football match.
  • Open Secret: The Reich claims that Neuschwabenland is a training exercise for its crew, teaching them how to build their mental fortitude. Everyone who actually resides in Neuschwabenland knows that this is a lie and the outposts are really just a place for Germany to sweep its disgraced scientists and soldiers under the rug.
  • Paper Tiger: Sensing vulnerability when civil war cuts Neuschwabenland's supplies, the Argentinians and OFN start muscling into their turf. The recommended response is Operation Phoenix, where the soldiers mobilize for a last, big marching parade on the OFN's territory to overexaggerate their strength and intimidate the Argentinians into submission. If accepted, some supplies will be sacrificed in exchange for a lot of militarization and legitimacy.
  • The Plague: When rations are halved to survive the supply shortage, two epidemics of scurvy and botulism hit Neuschwabenland, due to a lack of fresh meat and the consumption of bacteria-infected food, respectively.
  • Please Select New City Name: After taking over Queen Maud Land from Norway, the Germans gave new names to all lands formerly named after Norwegian royals.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: Quite literally. Under the new military direction of the colony, Neuschwabenland has become a haven for exiles from Germany who have been banished and forgotten about as punishment for some kind of failure. It's even worse when a doctor discovers that everyone in Neuschwabenland has lead poisoning from years of eating improperly sealed canned food, effectively making an assignment here a slow, unintentional death sentence.
  • Reclaimed by Nature: If Neuschwabenland falls during the German Civil War, Schirmacher Station becomes the home to millions of nesting penguins, who are the true settlers of Antarctica. One such penguin is Maximilian, who was previously held in the station as a research subject.
  • Robinsonade: In the season of desperation mission, Neuschwabenland's supply lines are suddenly lost during the German Civil War and the men there must carefully manage their stockpiles of supplies to survive the harsh Antarctic climate.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: The 2nd Mountain Division and its commanders board the Schwabenland II back to Germany so they can fight for their preferred candidate in the Civil War.
  • Settling the Frontier: With their gains from the Scramble for Antarctica, Germany organized a civilian administration to colonize the region. However, stricken supplies and strain from the West Russian War have made these plans unviable and the territory has now been reorganized into a military base.
  • Suppressed History: One of Neuschwabenland's colonies was a complete disaster, as the Gauleiter wasted the budget on alcohol and other personal luxuries, while leaving his people to starve or suffer frostbite. The survivors eventually rioted and were relocated by the Reich to their Eastern European territories so they could keep silent on the catastrophe of a settlement.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Schumann betrays Mayr to take over Neuschwabenland for Göring, but an uneasy truce is made to unite against the SS threat in the Ahnenerbe and the agreement is confirmed through a blood pact.
  • Third-Party Peacekeeper: The Germans in Antarctica assisted the OFN's attempts to mediate peace between Argentina and Chile over Antarctic land disputes, though they later withdrew when Juan Perón was overthrown.
  • Victory by Endurance: When the OAA invades in Operation Southern Cross, the Nazis intend to spite the OFN by surrendering and boobytrapping their forward fortifications, while German snipers and anti-tank rocketeers disable their snow crawlers. This leaves the OFN forces trapped in the snow and forced to march for miles before they can reach Schirmacher Station. The Germans don't expect to stop them with these measures, but it will slow them down and make them more vulnerable.
  • Villains Out Shopping:
    • The crew manning Schirmacher Station alternates between a summer crew and a winter crew, with the other going on vacation for a few months.
    • It is tradition in Neuschwabenland for everyone to get together, drink, and watch whatever latest movie a supply ship picks up from Germania. The celebration only lasts an hour, but it's the only thing keeping up everyone's morale in the largely depressing and monotonous atmosphere of Antarctica.

Rudolf Mayr

  • Alas, Poor Villain: Mayr is a Nazi, but his demoralizing station in Antarctica and desperation to even stay alive make him more pitiful than anything else.
  • The Alcoholic: Drinking is one of the few activities that helps Mayr cope with his miserable post in Antarctica.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Mayr accepted his transfer to Antarctica in the hopes that it would be an escape from the bureaucratic nightmare in Südwestafrika. Instead, he's become depressed over having to deal with foreign spies and potential supply shortages that constantly threaten the stability of Neuschwabenland.
  • Blind Obedience: He is devoted to every order sent by his command from Germania and will follow them to the letter.
  • Cigarette of Anxiety: Caught between the hostile SS and OFN administration, Mayr calms himself by smoking American cigarettes after his supply of cigars ran out.
  • Control Freak: His office is meticulously ordered, and he gets annoyed when Schirmacher dumps a mountain of papers on his desk and ruins his organization.
  • The Eeyore: The lonesome circumstances in Antarctica and Neuschwabenland's precarious situation has left Mayr depressed with his situation, only ever finding bliss from his smoke breaks.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: If rations are cut enough, Mayr is shocked and betrayed that one of his most dutiful soldiers, Ryker Hannemann, would betray his code when he and several other soldiers kill one of their weaker comrades and consume his body to survive. He's so disgusted that he exiles all of the culprits to freeze to death and doesn't bother looking when Hannemann hesitates and gets shot for insubordination.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Mayr cares deeply for his mentor and friend, Alfred Ritscher. When news reaches him to Germania about his passing, Mayr is moved to tears and gives a toast in his honor.
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • Mayr is horrified that the SS attacked Neuschwabenland not to wipe out the crew, but to kidnap Schumann and his nuclear projects so they could aid Himmler's insidious plans.
    • As supplies dwindle during the German Civil War, Mayr is reluctant to condone cannibalism as a means of survival, even if the bodies consumed were mutinous SS soldiers. Though he may authorize it, Mayr still ensures that the cannibalism is entirely optional for the crew members to decide and later punishes some soldiers who ambushed one of their weaker comrades and ate his body.
  • Face Death with Dignity: With communications to the Reich still cut off in the Civil War and most of the crew dead after supplies ran out, Mayr embraces his last living moments by drinking the last schnapps with Schirmacher and Herrmann, cheerfully sharing banter with each other before starvation or the cold claims them.
  • A Father to His Men: Despite his depressed nature, Mayr refuses to let his men perish during the German Civil War and conducts a strict rationing plan to keep the base afloat for as long as possible.
  • Fish out of Water: Mayr is a mere Luftwaffe pilot who's occasionally partaken in polar operations. It is a difficult task for him to manage all of Neuschwabenland and fight for the base's survival against Antarctica's cruel climate.
  • Heavy Sleeper: Inverted, as Mayr needs to be a light sleeper and ready to spring into action, if trouble stirs in Neuschwabenland.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: If Neuschwabenland runs out of supplies, legitimacy, or militarization, Mayr will order a difficult retreat back to Germany, where they will likely be court-martialed for their failure, while the OFN and SS divide the land of the fallen German base.
  • Necessarily Evil: In the season of desperation, Mayr is forced to give out stricter rations to his men, saving most of the station at the cost of some starving or freezing to death.
  • Nice to the Waiter: An inverted case where a villain is nice to the cooks. When he quarters starvation rations and learns that some of his men have threatened the cooks over it, Mayr furiously pulls out a pistol and warns everyone to not abuse them again with an implicit death threat.
  • Out Sick: Mayr is loyal to Bormann, but he's stricken with illness after Neuschwabenland's isolation and he can't personally meet the delegation sent to Antarctica, after Bormann's victory in the Civil War.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • When the Ahnenerbe mutiny is warded off, Mayr personally congratulates two pilots who played a key role in saving everyone's lives, promising to recommend an Iron Cross when peace is restored in Germany.
    • A near-literal example in the survival phase, where Mayr may refuse to kill Neuschwabenland's dogs for food.
    • When rescue finally arrives, Mayr acknowledges that the doctor of Schirmacher Station is the reason why everyone survived for so long and agrees that the crew owes their lives to him.
    • If a soldier, Herbert Freitag, keeps silent on the Ahnenerbe's attack, Mayr will recognize his 40 years of loyal service and pull some strings to give him a comfy command position near Stuttgart, where he can easily visit his family.
  • Pragmatic Villainy:
    • Mayr largely opposes Neuschwabenland's nuclear testing because he believes that experimental advanced aircraft is far more important. Unfortunately, he's shut out by his subordinates and all resources will eventually be fully allocated to nuclear testing.
    • After cutting rations in half, Mayr is shocked and outraged to discover that some soldiers tried to steal food reserves for themselves, but he may deny them a swift execution because Neuschwabenland needs as many able bodies to survive the Civil War. Instead, Mayr will sentence them to hard labor.
  • You Are in Command Now: When Germany's colonization efforts collapsed, they quickly brought Mayr in to stabilize the situation, hoping that his past experience in polar climates would lead to better results.

Richardheinrich Schirmacher

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/richardheinrichschirmacherlarge.png
Role: Head of Government (Mayr cabinet)
Party: Deutsche Gesellschaft für Polarforschungnote
Ideology: National Socialism
In-Game Biography (Head of Government) Click to Show

  • Creature of Habit: His day follows the same general routine: eat a disgusting breakfast with a cup of delicious coffee, board a plane with Mayr, scout for enemy movement, and repeat.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones:
    • Schirmacher was a mentee to Alfred Ritscher and shares Mayr's toast to his passing.
    • The last time Schirmacher took a vacation was a South African trip with his old friend Abner, who just retired from being a commercial pilot and was commended by Schirmacher for working so hard.
    • As the situation in Neuschwabenland grows dire from the supply shortage, Schirmacher wishes that he could return to Europe and reunite with his family.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Neuschwabenland is doomed if they run out of supplies during the German Civil War, but Schirmacher calmly accepts his fate and shares a drink with Mayr and Herrmann, even laughing at Mayr's joke that Schirmacher is paying for his hubris by naming the station after himself.
  • A Father to His Men: Schirmacher develops this reputation during the Civil War, as Mayr rescinds the Reich's strict orders on bunking and Schirmacher takes the soldiers' input on who they can bunk with, making the latter wildly popular.
  • Must Have Caffeine: He hates the cafeteria food provided, but he always looks forward to the coffee made from imported Latin American beans. His introduction event begins with him greedily filling a cup of coffee before getting into a plane for a scouting mission.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: When Schumann's mutineers and Mayr's loyalists are in a standoff, Schirmacher admonishes the factionalism of the insurrectionists and peacefully ends the confrontation with word that Mayr wants to negotiate with them. Unbeknownst to Schirmacher, he just saved everyone's lives, as the Ahnenerbe were secretly waiting for a firefight to happen so they can kill the survivors.
  • Sociopathic Soldier: In the West Russian War, Schirmacher has killed men, women, and children on the ground or in his plane. He has no remorse for the war crimes he committed, justifying that a "good soldier is well acquainted with death".
  • Villainous Friendship: Schirmacher is a longtime friend of Mayr and they're both Nazis.

Ernst Herrmann

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ernst_herrmann_large.png
Role: Foreign Minister (Mayr cabinet)
Party: Deutsche Gesellschaft für Polarforschungnote
Ideology: Fascism
In-Game Biography (Foreign Minister) Click to Show

  • All for Nothing: Herrmann's trip to Germany and planned lectures end up getting canceled because of the assassination attempt on Hitler and the closure of the German airspace. Worse still, Herrmann's request for more supplies is rejected, as Ritscher says that the bureaucracy is tangled with the current succession crisis and Neuschwabenland will have to bear the current shortage.
  • Anti-Villain: Unlike the rest of his colleagues, Herrmann has little passion for the Nazi regime and secretly wishes that it can be replaced with a democracy, like a reformed Weimar Republic. He only works in Neuschwabenland because he doesn't have much of a choice.
  • Bold Explorer: On behalf of Germany, Herrmann has explored the world for nearly four decades, traveling to distant lands like the Arctic Circle.
  • The Drifter: Hermann loves traveling the world and journeyed with one of his old World War I mates, thanks to the charity of a millionaire's son who served in their platoon. Once his job in Neuschwabenland is done, Herrmann will resume this lifestyle.
  • Exhausted Eyebags: Due to the assassination attempt on Hitler's life, Herrmann's trip to Germany is rejected and he's forced to bounce around numerous airports across the Pakt before he can return to Neuschwabenland. By the time he returns, Herrmann has eyebags from exhaustion.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Herrmann knows he's doomed if Neuschwabenland runs out of supplies and the Reich is still torn apart by civil war, but he accepts his fate with dignity by sharing a last drink with Mayr and Schirmacher.
  • Stronger Than They Look: Herrmann might be old, but he's still a veteran of two world wars and kills an armed soldier during Schumann's mutiny.
  • Undignified Death: Subverted. Schumann's mutiny happens right as Herrmann is having an affair with his secretary and a soldier charges in his office while he's in his underwear. Despite being caught with his literal pants down, Herrmann easily defends himself and crushes the soldier's head in with a paperweight.
  • What You Are in the Dark:
    • Though he serves the Nazi regime, Herrmann deeply misses his old traveling partner, who was killed in the Night of the Long Knives. At one point, Herrmann reminisces over an old photo with him and wishes that he "give Hitler hell in the next life".
    • His faith in the Reich is more tenuous compared to his colleagues and he secretly hopes that it can be reformed. If Bormann wins the Civil War, Herrmann reflects on his disappointment that the Nazi regime lives on. On the other hand, if Speer wins the Civil War, Herrmann is ecstatic that Germany can potentially be de-Nazified.

Erich Schumann

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_aag_erich_schumann.png
Role: Economy Minister (Mayr cabinet), Head of State (Göring successor)
Party: Deutsche Gesellschaft für Polarforschungnote
Ideology: Antarctic Administrationnote
In-Game Biography (Economy Minister) Click to Show

  • Allohistorical Allusion: Erich Schumann, the man behind the Pearl Harbor nuclear attack, is now stationed in Neuschwabenland and still guilty over his creation, just like Robert Oppenheimer in OTL. Schumann even nicknames himself "death, destroyer of worlds", echoing the same quote by Oppenheimer.
  • Driven to Suicide: If supplies run out during the German Civil War, Schumann goes outside to kill himself, but not before commenting his amusement that the undecaying Schirmacher Station will last longer than Hitler's Thousand Year Reich.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Schumann is initially unrepentant of his attempted putsch against Mayr, but he completely changes his tune when he realizes that it left Neuschwabenland vulnerable enough for the SS to nearly steal his nuclear designs and potentially destroy Germany with them.
  • For Science!: Schumann is fascinated with the incredible power of nuclear weapons. Göring shared a similar interest and sent Schumann to Antarctica so he could freely conduct his tests, which would include the development of chemical and biological weapons.
  • Hidden Depths: He is a surprisingly good guitarist, playing the "Erika" marching song as the last supplies arrive upon the German Civil War's outbreak.
  • I Fight for the Strongest Side!: If Bormann wins the Civil War, Schumann burns any contacts he had with Göring and the militarists, while communicating with his contacts in the conservative camp to integrate himself in the new regime.
  • Obnoxious In-Laws: He has a strained relationship with his mother-in-law, who he calls colder than a night in Breslau.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Mayr convinces Schumann to stop his putsch by pointing out that any potential deaths would be blamed on him.
  • Rank Up: If Göring wins the Civil War, Schumann is promoted and given temporary control of Neuschwabenland, granting him the power to realize his scientific and experimental ambitions.
  • Red Herring: Schumann is initially set up as the main antagonist menacing Mayr for the first few years of the mod, collaborating with Göring to take over Neuschwabenland. When his mutiny actually occurs, Schumann's threat level is immediately overshadowed by the threat of an Ahnenerbe attack and the supply shortages during the German Civil War.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: While Mayr has to beg for funding his aeronautics division, Schumann can easily bring the materials to build his nuclear weapons because he's friends with Göring, a member of Hitler's inner circle. It gets to a point that Neuschwabenland ends Mayr's program so they can concentrate on Schumann's work.
  • The Starscream: Thanks to Göring's help, Schumann has amassed a clique of alienated officers and soldiers who have the means to take over Neuschwabenland in a putsch, securing Antarctica for the miltiarists and forcing Mayr's resignation.
  • Villainous Friendship: Schumann is friends with Hermann Göring, having met him at a party in 1958. This connection allows him to bring modern electronics to Neuschwabenland so he can conduct nuclear tests.
  • What You Are in the Dark: In his private quarters, Schumann is haunted with nightmares over his atomic bombing of Pearl Harbor, fearing that his own creation will destroy the world if another war breaks out between the superpowers. His desire to build stronger nuclear weapons is to ensure that Germany will not be outpaced in the arms race and potentially destroyed.

Anton Grasser

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/antongrasser.png
Role: Security Minister (Mayr cabinet)
Party: Deutsche Gesellschaft für Polarforschungnote
Ideology: National Socialism
In-Game Biography (Security Minister) Click to Show

  • Cold-Blooded Torture: After Schumann's failed putsch, Grasser is tasked with punishing potential sedition and taking soldiers to an interrogation chamber to stop spreading treasonous speech under the threat of torture. Neuschwabenland can ill-afford another mutiny, so extreme violence is necessary to keep the peace.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Grasser suffers the most among Neuschwabenland's leadership if Bormann wins the Civil War. He receives terrible news that his sons perished in the conflict, leaving him distraught and motivating his resignation so that he can quietly retire to Bavaria.
  • The Determinator: Protecting Neuschwabenland from foreign agents will be the hardest mission for Grasser to complete, but the old General is determined to finish the job, no matter what.
  • The Dragon: He is Schumann's right-hand man, aiding his attempted putsch and standing by his side, if Goring wins the Civil War and reasserts his control of Neuschwabenland.
  • Driven to Suicide: If supplies run out while the German Civil War is still ongoing, Grasser joins Schumann outside to kill themselves.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Grasser is mildly insulted that the Reich poured so many resources into their moon landing, wishing that they'd give just as much attention to their neglected operations in Antarctica.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Grasser is worried about his family back home, namely about his wife being overworked in the Krupp armaments in preparation for a civil war, while his two sons bicker over political differences.
  • Home Sweet Home: Subverted. If Neuschwabenland is converted into a scientific administration, Grasser is the only member of its leadership to stay, while the others are recalled back to Germany.
  • Nepotism: He accepts an offer by Schumann and Göring to favor the former's nuclear projects so that his son can get a promotion in the Luftwaffe. This later motivates his participation in Schumann's putsch, so that his son can still stay in the Luftwaffe's good graces.
  • Poke the Poodle: As the Neuschwabenland leadership formulates a response to the Ahnenerbe mutiny, Grasser puts his feet on Herrmann's desk, much to the owner's annoyance.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: His prejudice for Slavic people is already indicated with his alignment with National Socialism, but it's shown again when starts training men to protect Neuschwabenland's food supply, pushing them to train harder with the claim that he's seen "emaciated Slavs" more active than them.
  • The Social Expert: He can read people like an open book, including the usually stoic Schumann.
  • The Starscream: Grasser joins Schumann's mutiny and leads the uprising in Schirmacher Station, mostly to help his son's career in the Luftwaffe.
  • Stepford Smiler: When his eldest son was just six years old, he was inspired by his father's service in Moskowien and the Hauptmann Germania comics, wanting to join the Wehrmacht so he can defend Germany too. Knowing well of the horrors of war, Grasser disapproved of this dream, but expressed fake enthusiasm and told his son to "do whatever makes you happy".
  • Stone Wall: Knowing that most Antarctician battles are waged as sieges, Grasser wants to train the soldiers to prepare defensive fortifications, even if it costs them some offensive capabilities.
  • Villains Out Shopping: Grasser's main hobby is fishing. When he was old enough to pick up a rod, his father taught him everything about fishing and he's since passed this hobby on to his sons.

Hans Degen

Role: High Command, Army Chief
In-Game Biography (High Command & Army Chief) Click to Show

  • A Father to His Men: Degen is proud of his men's efforts during the Second Malagasy Uprising and is concerned that the same misfortunes that befell the Neuschwabenland colonists will also afflict his men in the 2nd Mountain Division.
  • Hit-and-Run Tactics: His favored military tactic is reliant on maneuverability, using his troops' superior speed to attack and escape before they can get encircled.
  • More Dakka: Learning from the Second Malagasy Uprising, Degen proposes augmenting the 2nd Mountain Division with more anti-aircraft and anti-armor units to overwhelm the combine arms of their enemies.
  • Pet the Dog: Despite the tight training schedule, Degen can give his men a short break so they can rest up and work harder.
  • Put on a Bus: After a few orders, Degen returns to Germany on the MS Schwabenland II, giving one final order to Kottas to either secure the supply lines or solely focus on training the Division.
  • Winter Warfare: Degen has fought in the cold multiple times. He fought the Soviet Union in the Arctic Circle for multiple years and is now sent to Antarctica so he can whip the soldiers into shape and defend Neuschwabenland.

Eduard Zorn

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eduardzorn.png
Role: High Command
In-Game Biography (High Command) Click to Show

  • A Father to His Men: If the Germans lose the Second Malagasy Uprising, Zorn will sympathize with his men, understanding how beaten and disappointed the survivors are.
  • I Fight for the Strongest Side!: During the German Civil War, Zorn wants to swear the Division's loyalty to Göring, citing his greater military support and firepower as the main reason.
  • More Dakka: His suggestion to train the soldiers is to arm them with more heavy weaponry, like howitzers. As he claims, the soldiers won't need to rely on fortifications if they can overwhelm the enemy with firepower.
  • War Hero: Zorn is a decorated veteran of the 2nd Mountain Division, having participated in the Eastern and Finnish fronts of World War II and the West Russian War.
  • What You Are in the Dark: His older brother, Hans, perished on the Eastern Front in 1943 and Eduard is still insecure that he can measure up to his legacy.

Erwin Fussenegger

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/erwinfussenegger.png
Role: High Command
In-Game Biography (High Command) Click to Show

  • Fat Bastard: Fussenegger is a pudgy officer with multiple connections to the Nazi regime.
  • I Fight for the Strongest Side!: He encourages Degen to pledge the 2nd Mountain Division's loyalty to Bormann, convinced that his influence is strong within Germany and that the Division will greatly benefit from allying with the political machine.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: He's cultivated many relationships with the Reich's higher echelons and used them to his benefit. For example, his connections to Bormann allows Fussenegger to bring more powerful artillery to the 2nd Mountain Division at a "modest cost".
  • Villainous Friendship: When Austria was annexed and Fussenegger was assigned to the 2nd Mountain Division, he formed a close friendship with another General, Valentine Fuerstein.

Valentine Feurstein

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/valentinefeurstein.png
Role: Theorist
In-Game Biography (Theorist) Click to Show

  • Appeal to Tradition: Zig-Zagged. Feurstein isn't one for radical change. After the Second Malagasy Uprising, Feurstein proposes no major reforms to the 2nd Mountain Division and just wants more mountaineering brigades added, stating that they should stick to the combat roles they've traditionally had. However, he breaks away from this mold when he argues that the Division should follow Speer in the German Civil War, approving von Tresckow's reforms to the Wehrmacht.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: His old age and unwillingness to adapt to modern military doctrine makes him disliked by Degen and Zorn, who try to confine his influence to Germany.
  • Old Soldier: Feurstein joined the Austro-Hungarian Army in 1907 and has since built up a lot of war experience, leading him to becoming the 2nd Mountain Division's first commander.
  • Rank Up: For contributing the invasions of Poland and Norway in World War II, Feurstein was rewarded with a promotion to General der Gebirgstruppe. He would later be promoted again and given command of the LI. Gebirgs-Armeekorps during the Battle of Stalingrad.
  • Villainous Friendship: He's close friends with Erwin Fuessenegger, providing strategic support to him in Neuschwabenland.

Franz Preuschoff

In-Game Biography (Air Chief) Click to Show

  • Villainous Friendship:
    • He's an old friend of Mayr from the Koch expedition to Northern Greenland. They have since worked together numerous times, such as in the Third German Antarctic Expedition.
    • During the Second World War, Preuschoff worked in Lufthansa and worked his way from being an aircraft technician to a flight engineer, earning him the respect and friendship of Erhard Milch.

Konstanty Gutschow

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_aag_konstanty_gutschow.png
Role: Head of State (Speer successor)
Party: Deutsche Gesellschaft für Polarforschungnote
Ideology: Antarctic Administrationnote

  • Reassigned to Antarctica: Subverted. To Mayr's surprise, his replacement from Speer is not a washed-up bureaucrat or old general, but a legitimately successful architect who will turn Neuschwabenland into a more efficient vassal of the Reich.

Viktor Lutze

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_aag_viktor_lutze.png
Role: Head of State (Bormann successor)
Party: Deutsche Gesellschaft für Polarforschungnote
Ideology: Antarctic Administrationnote

  • Reassigned to Antarctica: Subverted. He actually volunteered to be sent to Antarctica to guard it for the "Aryan race". Mayr considers this to be a foolish decision.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: A villainous example. Lutze is convinced that he can turn Neuschwabenland into a perfect colony for Germany to assert its dominance on every continent in the globe, which Mayr considers to be hopelessly idealistic of the grim situation he's just gotten himself into.

Official Name: Ahnenerbe Antarktis Gruppenote , Ahnenerbe Antarktiszonenote

Ideology: Antarctic Administrationnote

  • Adventurer Archaeologist: The Ahnenerbe Antarctic Group was dispatched to the continent in search of evidence to support Aryan racial theory, as well as proof of the World Ice Doctrine, as ordered by the Reichsführer-SS.
  • Bilingual Bonus: The words "Deutsches Ahnenerbe" are inscribed on their flag, which translates to "German Ancestral Heritage" and represents their overall mission to find "evidence" supporting Aryan race theories.
  • Conflict Killer: Neuschwabenland's potential mutiny is quelled when the SS invade, hoping to steal their experimental nuclear stockpile for Himmler's own purposes. This unites the two parties in opposition to their mutual enemy.
  • Didn't Think This Through: The Ahnenerbe underestimates Neuschwabenland's strength and initiates a mutiny with every weapon available. However, they completely forgot to bring food or water, so they are easily quarantined if Mayr's encirclement tactics are used and flushed out with white phosphorus grenades.
  • Evil Welcomes Defectors: Zig-Zagged. Three deserting soldiers from Neuschwabenland can flee to the Ahnenerbe, where their racial "purity" is tested through pseudo-scientific skull measurements. Only one of them passes the test and the other two have their throats slit, while the survivor is welcomed into the SS ranks.
  • Renegade Splinter Faction: While technically part of New Swabia's administration, the Ahnenerbe and other SS members stationed in Antarctica are loyal to Heinrich Himmler and Burgundy alone, and have no plans to take orders from Rudolf Mayr.
  • The Starscream: As Germany is preoccupied with the Civil War, the Ahnenerbe turn on Neuschwabenland to seize their experimental nuclear weapons.
  • We Have Reserves: The Ahnenerbe have a surprisingly large pool of manpower to sacrifice their soldiers in attacks against Neuschwabenland. Schirmacher lampshades this and wonders how they're getting so many reserves.

See its recap page here.

  • Abandoned Area: Subverted. On the surface, Belgrano Base has several orange structures almost completely buried by snow and ice, but it's really because the base is underground. Still, Olezza comments that the buried structures make it look abandoned.
  • Blatant Lies: In the Snipe War, the Argentinian Navy invaded the disputed western regions of Antarctica and the Beagle Channel, territories still held to this day. Despite this, the government still denies any involvement with their illicit invasion.
  • Boring, but Practical: The "Main Street" of San Martín Base is an unglamorous line of huts, but it doesn't need to be flashy. It still offers comfortable residence during the winter, which is the only thing that matters in Antarctica.
  • Claiming Via Flag: A repeated gesture to claim land for Argentina:
    • The primary objective of Argentine Antarctica is Operación 90, where Leal and his team will travel from Belgrano I to the South Pole, plant a flag in their destination, and return home alive. Success will strengthen Argentina's claim over Antarctica and give them more legitimacy to their foreign rivals.
    • Argentinian vessels encroach on foreign territory to claim their islands by planting a flag on top. On Wiencke Island, the Argentinian crew raid a hut, mercilessly kill two of the soldiers there, burn the outpost, and topple the Chilean flag in place of an Argentinian one.
    • Patrol 82 plants a flag in the Santa Fe Range, strengthening their country's claim over the Antarctic Interior.
  • Defiant to the End: The AAI leadership are outraged by the Navy's decision to stop sending them supplies and manufacturing a shortage, but they refuse to delay Operación 90 or give into the Navy's wish to start war with Chile.
  • The Determinator: The South Pole Assault Group are assembled to travel in Operación 90, having spent years of training and sacrifice for the greatest achievement in their lives. They will face great challenges from the Navy and the wilderness, but they will stop at nothing to see their destination, a sentiment reaffirmed by Leal when they are seven degrees away from the South Pole and at the home stretch.
  • Dream Team: Leal assembles the Operación 90 South Pole Assault Group and calls them his dream team, including himself as the leader, Giró as his second-in-command and Head of "Scientific Tasks", Ceppi, Bulacio, Rodriguez, and Ortiz as his mechanics, Carrion and Moreno as his surveyors, Zacarias as his communications officer, and Alfonso as his patrolman. It can also optionally include the legendary Pujato as an attache.
  • Egopolis:
    • The southernmost base in Antarctica is Belgrano, founded in 1955 and named after Manuel Belgrano, one of the Founding Fathers of Argentina.
    • Preparations for Operación 90 establish a supply dump inland to the South Pole, which is named Sobral base after the first Argentinian to winter in Antarctica, Jose Maria Sobral.
  • Hidden in Plain Sight: Operación 90 must be kept secret from the world because Germany, the OFN, and Chile all have competing land stakes and will likely start direct conflict with Argentine Antarctica. Thus, the preparatory stage must be done discreetly so it looks like business as usual instead of preparing for the most ambitious Antarctican venture in history. Failing to keep the disguise will have consequences during the actual journey.
  • Hypocrite: The Argentinian Navy fiercely defends the legality of their territory claims and expect their neighbors to obey them, even when they encroach on Chile's turf and plant flags on their islands to steal them.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: As a depressing winter sets in every year, the crew of Esperanza Base are well-provisioned with liquor, especially with Fernet Branca, a sweet liqueur mixed with Coca-Cola and an Argentinian icon created from generations of Italian migration. Leal and Giró share a glass together to hope they can survive another year.
  • Multiple Endings: There are several endings to Operación 90 depending on certain conditions:
    • If the convoy runs out of food and exhaust their alternative sources, they will all perish in the wilderness, where Leal, Giró, and possibly Pujato freeze to death, ending their journey in failure. Meanwhile, control of Argentine Antarctica is passed to Massera and the Navy, who start arming the territory for an invasion of Chile's Antarctic lands. No longer restrained by the AAI or the government, Massera eagerly awaits his chance for glory, hoping it can translate into national fame or even a presidency.
    • If the crew completes Operación 90, they will be hailed as heroes for legitimizing Argentina's land claims and flown to Buenos Aires to be celebrated. There are several variations depending on certain conditions.
      • If no crew members were lost and the plans were never leaked to the OFN or Chile, Operación 90 will be considered a resounding success, achieving all of its stated goals and going down as one of the greatest expeditions in history.
      • If at least one crew member perished and/or the Chileans discovered Operación 90, the mission will be designated a nominal success, where Argentina's claim is solidified, but there were too many complications for it to be considered a complete victory.
      • If more than 4 crew members died, Operación 90 can only be considered a tragic success. Though an Argentinian flag lays planted at the South Pole, the survivors are traumatized by the losses they've sustained and rumors circulate that they cannibalized on their dead.
  • Necessarily Evil: While sailing the Palmer Archipelago and landing on Wiencke Island, an Argentinian ship claims a Chilean-owned island and murders the two soldiers guarding it. Leal and the rest of the leadership reluctantly cover up the Wiencke Island incident because revealing it would start war with Chile, something that the AAI can't afford and would greatly benefit their rivals in the Navy.
  • Let No Crisis Go to Waste: With the Allied defeat in World War II, Britain's Antarctic land claim was left up for grabs, which fell to Argentina.
  • Odd Friendship: The isolated Argentinian outpost on the Brunt Ice Shelf have a cordial relationship with the German base in Neuschwabenland, where they illegally exchange goods with each other and sometimes cross into each other's territory to converse.
  • Resources Management Gameplay: A fundamental aspect to completing Operación 90 is managing the fuel reserves for the snowcats and food to keep the men fed. Leal is alerted if half of either resource is used up. Running out of fuel means that the Assault Group will have to march to the South Pole and abandon more supplies. Using up the rations is even worse, as they'll resort to increasingly desperate measures to buy just a few more days of survival, including the consumption of their sled dogs, their spare leather, and a deceased crew member.
  • The Rival: The Argentinians are fierce rivals with the Chileans, having disputed control of Antarctica even before the Scramble. Tensions came to a head when an Argentinian patrol fired upon a group of Chilean surveyors and the Argentinian Navy invaded their territory.
  • The Starscream: The Navy has been trying to siphon funds away from the AAI in hopes of running them out of the Administration and taking over Antarctica for themselves.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Argentine Antarctica is one of the smallest territories on the content, but they were the first to arrive in the post-WWII era and their dispute with Chile over land claims led to the Scramble for Antarctica and subsequent foreign meddling by the other superpowers.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: The Argentine Antarctica Institute relies on the Navy to protect their waters, but both factions compete for funding and Leal distrusts the Navy as too unpredictable for their own good. When Leal and the Assault Group visit Ushuaia for a break, there's a lot of unresolved tension with the naval officers they meet.
  • Timed Mission: The ultimate objective of Leal and his team is Operación 90, where they will travel to the South Pole and plant a flag there, forever legitimizing Argentina's claim over the continent and proving the AAI more worthy than their rivals in the Navy. They have until October 25, 1963 to get all the necessary preparations before they embark.
  • Warhawk: The Argentinian Navy is made up of petty warmongers and "thugs in uniforms", as Beltramino puts it, eager to risk war and conflict with their neighbors out of pride and ego.

  • Beneath the Mask:
    • During his stay at Sobral Base, Leal cannot sleep because he's been keeping track of how much equipment the Operación 90 crew have used up by this point and worries about the risks posed by this single mission. Further, Leal wonders if even a successful mission will peacefully stop Massera's attempts to take over Argentine Antarctica, pondering if more assertive action is needed to stop him.
    • Further down the South Pole, Leal doesn't even reveal to his journal that he's starting to doubt the chances of Operación 90 succeeding, especially as the team's sleds are being worn down. The only hint to his true feelings is naming their current stay 'Camp Desolation'.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Leal prefers not to use violence and instead delegate energy towards surviving the elements. However, Leal knows that peace is unrealistic when it comes to disputed territory claims and can bring more armaments to Antarctica in case conflict is unavoidable.
  • Bold Explorer: At heart, Leal is an explorer enthusiastic about trekking the South Pole and is distasteful to the military aims of the other regional competitors. As such, he's more focused on scientific pursuits and conducting expeditions than trying to outgun the other claimants to Antarctica. On the first day of Operación 90, Leal is ecstatic and has never felt so alive in years.
  • Claiming Via Flag: In 1963 Leal will lead Operación 90, an expedition to plant an Argentine flag at the South Pole and further legitimize Argentina’s territorial claims. The mission can either be a success or result in the team disappearing.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Survival in Antarctica can depend on luck, so Leal has numerous contingencies and backup plans in case of an emergency, including evacuation routes, fuel dumps, and emergency rations.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Leal will spend years preparing for Operación 90 and travel thousands of kilometers to the South Pole, braving the snow, winds, sastrugi, and potential foreign interference. If successful, Leal will be flown to Argentina and hailed as a hero, having secured their claim over Antarctica and, on a more discreet level, legitimized the AAI long enough that they can deal with Massera. It'd be a resounding success too if no one perished on the journey and Operación 90 was kept secret to Chile and the OFN.
  • Face Death with Dignity: If Operación 90 ends in disaster, Leal will write his last words in his journal before tucking into a sleeping bag and peacefully dying.
  • A Father to His Men: One of Leal's greatest joys from working in Antarctica is forming a brotherly bond with his crew. As morale sinks during the winter, he hosts a banquet to keep everyone's spirits up and congratulates everyone for training so hard. He goes as far as to personally inspect each can of food he gives to his men, ensuring that they aren't rotten or botulism-infected.
  • Heroic RRoD:
    • Downplayed. If fewer than four casualties are sustained by his return to Belgrano Base, Leal is too tired to hear a report of Massera's actions since he left, stating that he needs some sleep and a hot shower first.
    • After completing Operación 90, Leal and his crew are flown to Buenos Aires to stay in one of their most luxurious hotels, the Alvear Palace. Leal immediately succumbs to sleep when he enters his room.
  • Let No Crisis Go to Waste: Leal is one of the few people to see opportunity instead of strife during the winter season. He uses the harsh environment as a training exercise for his Operación 90 candidates to map out ten square kilometers in all directions from Esperanza, bearing the blizzard and working in pairs to complete the mission.
  • Martial Pacifist: He doesn't have a problem with military and scientific goals aligning, but Leal is squeamish about the excessive number of territorial disputes and border wars in Antarctica. In his ideal world, he'd be off adventuring instead of encroaching on foreign borders. However, if someone pushes too far, Leal will fight back.
  • Necessarily Evil: Much as Leal despises violence, he's still a realist and can reluctantly forsake the chance for more supplies to sign a request for more weapons, which he can deem more necessary for deterrence.
  • Never Found the Body: If the Operación 90 expedition fails, the fate of Leal and his team is unknown. It’s presumed they most likely died, with the Argentine government reluctantly noting that the team would have run out of supplies.
  • Properly Paranoid: Leal fears that the Navy would turn on the AAI and makes numerous preparations in case of betrayal, from expanding aircraft operations in Matienzo Joint Base to having Olezza build a larger, more accessible airfield so they can bring supplies independently. These fears are vindicated when the Navy temporarily turns on them and stops sending supplies to the AAI.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Leal can successfully reach the South Pole, but if he lost too many men on the journey, he will find no satisfaction in his victory, knowing that so many people died on his watch. If more than 7 crew members die, the worst case scenario, Leal wonders to himself how everything went so wrong.
  • Save the Villain: The Italians have almost no preparations to survive the first winter they'll experience, so they beg the Argentinians to send supplies and save them. It's up to Leal whether he does so or not.
  • Who Watches the Watchmen?: Leal knows how unpredictable the Navy is, so he usually stays behind to keep watch on them. When Giró is about to embark on an 1900 km journey to San Martín Base, Leal wishes him luck and explains that he needs to stay behind to keep the Navy in check.

  • Animal Lover: Giró loves his sled dog team, considering his huskies more valuable than the snowcats on their journey to the South Pole.
  • Bold Explorer: He's well-versed in paradropping, skiing, and winter survival, making him the perfect explorer of Antarctica when Argentina first laid claim to the continent. Unfortunately, attempts to explore the interior have become more difficult due to foreign interference, but this hasn't dulled his enthusiasm to travel to the South Pole via Operación 90.
  • Face Death with Dignity: If the Assault Group runs out of food, Giró will lie in a sleeping bag next to Leal, assuring his friend that he will remain by his side until they both freeze to death.
  • Number Two: Giró is Leal's second-in-command and one of the chief planners behind Operación 90, in which he hopes to travel with Leal and fulfill their personal dream.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Giró loves his sled dogs, but after 7 days of traveling to the South Pole with no food, his mouth waters when he hears Leal lure a husky behind a snowbank to kill it and feed his crew. It shows how desperate the situation has become for the South Pole Assault Group and a sign that they might not make it out of the Interior alive.
  • Passing the Torch: In case Operación 90 goes south, Leal handpicks Giró as his successor on the team, trusting that he will complete the mission in his stead.
  • Pursue the Dream Job: Giró's main job is watching the border and ensuring that the Chileans don't try encroaching on them, yet he feels that his talents are wasted on this task and believes his true potential is exploration. Thus, he tolerates the job until Operación 90 is ready and he can begin his long-awaited journey.

  • But Now I Must Go: Every winter, Beltramino leaves Antarctica because he's needed back in Buenos Aires to divert more funding to the Argentine Antarctica Institute. On the last transport boat, he bids the best of luck that Leal and his comrades can survive the climate.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Beltramino has ambitions to expand Argentina's claims on Antarctica, but he still wants to limit the bloodshed of these encroachments. If he lobbies to the government for more funding, he's hopeful that it will snub the Navy's overt militarism and give peace another chance on the continent.
  • Minor Major Character: He's only a supporting character in Argentine Antarctica, but he authored multiple papers securing Argentina's territorial claims on the continent, including his thesis "The Question of Argentine-Chilean Limits on Antarctica". His diplomatic tongue further secured Argentina's land claims and he's been largely successful in defending them from Chilean petitions.
  • Necessarily Evil:
    • He can negotiate with the German embassy to recognize Argentina's claims on Antarctica, though he has no love for them and the toxic ideology they represent. Beltramino only tolerates them because it's diplomatically necessary, getting Germany to recognize the Argentine claim on Adelaide Island in exchange for sharing intel on OFN operations near the Malvinas and the Drake Passage.
    • Beltramino will need to curry favor from either Italy for more weapons, Germany for more icebreakers, or Japan for useful intelligence on what the Chileans are up to. All three of these options means appealing to a brutal dictatorship with varying degrees of fascist influence, but Beltramino has no choice but to pick one for the sake of pragmatism.
  • Warrior Poet: He's described as a romantic, diplomat-conquistador who likes to engage in poetry and literature, as well as plan the invasion and conquest of an iceberg for Argentina.

In-Game Biography (Head of Government) Click to Show

  • Ace Pilot: Olezza is one of the best pilots in Antarctica, who is skillful enough to fly through a storm to rescue a crew and personally discover Seymour Island as the perfect spot to build Leal's year-round airfield.
  • Honor Before Reason: Hearing a distress signal in the middle of a winter storm, Olezza considers boarding a Doulgas C-47 to rescue them, a decision that a mechanic calls insane. By sheer luck, the rescue attempt works.
  • I Should Have Been Better: If the South Pole Assault Group returns to Belgrano Base after losing 4 men, Olezza will despair at the heavy cost of Operación 90 and wonder if he could have done more to prevent their deaths.
  • Life's Work Ruined: Olezza spent many years developing Argentina's Antarctica's territory, from flying transport planes to the San Martín Base to creating the Pre-Antarctica Training Center so planes could learn how to take off and land on ice. He hoped that his efforts would allow him to visit Antarctica by plane, but these went to waste when German anti-air installations made any flight travel risky. Now, Olezza is stuck managing the territory's supply shipments, though he wishes he could do more.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Realizing the dangers of flying in a winter storm, Olezza can delay his rescue attempt of a stranded outpost and wait until conditions clear up. Unfortunately, by the time he gets there, the outpost is already buried in snow and everyone's frozen corpses are intact, horrifying Olezza, who berates himself as a coward.
  • Red Baron: Olezza relentlessly supports the development of more airways in Antarctica and has planned numerous crazy rescue missions on the continent. These feats earned him the nickname 'el Loco'.
  • Taught by Experience Years of living in Antarctica has taught Olezza everything about how the environment affects air frames. Thus, he'll occasionally inspect the aircraft to personally ensure that they are safe to use.

  • Beneath the Mask: Pujato is idolized by everyone as a veteran explorer and he maintains a cheerful attitude if he joins Operación 90, but he secretly knows that this will likely be his last journey because of his growing age.
  • Driven to Suicide: If he joins the South Pole Assault Group and they run out of food, Pujato knows that they aren't coming home alive, so he leaves his tent and lets the elements slowly kill him.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: When he first returned to Argentina after Perón's downfall, Pujato saw no crowds gathering like they used to, as if they've all forgotten his foundation of San Martín Base and other exploits in Antarctica. Pujato never forgot this experience and vows to get back into the public's good graces.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Pujato is a stark rival to the Navy, but when he receives a distress signal from the Rosario and San Martín for help, he wastes no time in readying a dog sled team to do so.
  • Face Death with Dignity: If he joins Operación 90 and the group uses up all of their food sources, Pujato solemnly realizes that death is inevitable for everyone, especially as more crew members are picked off. However, Pujato calmly meets his fate by standing outside of his tent and waiting for the cold to kill him, spending his last moments relishing all he's done on the continent and finding satisfaction that he will become bound to his second home in Antarctica.
  • A Father to His Men: Pujato cares deeply for his men, having an open ear to lower-ranked soldiers and potentially rewarding all of his subordinates with a feast.
  • Feeling Their Age: Pujato is fifty-nine years old and starting to feel the cold more keenly than he used to in his more youthful days.
  • Founder of the Kingdom: In the days of Perón, Pujato founded the San Martín Base, the first permanent Argentine settlement in Antarctica. This would later prove useful for his country by securing a slice of the continent during the Scramble.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: His former ties to Perón makes him a pariah in the military and he's only kept around because he was key in founding Argentine Antarctica.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: Pujato has spent years surviving in Antarctica and he has cynical expectations of how Operación 90 will proceed. If he joins the venture, he persuades a corporal to not get too attached to one of his dogs, subtly implying that not every animal will come out of the journey alive.
  • Living Legend: Pujato is considered a living hero who's mastered Antarctic survival and was instrumental in securing Argentina's claims over the continent.
  • Long Game:
    • He avoids overt aggression against Chile's Antarctic claims because Argentina is not yet ready to kick them out of the continent, so he'll bide his time and play the long game until his country is ready.
    • Pujato is aware of how much power the Navy has over the AAI, where they can cut off a food or fuel shipment to easily cow them. Thus, Pujato is slowly transferring as much army personnel to San Martín Base and collaborating with Leal and Olezza to build aerial supply lines. These efforts will be disguised as a buildup against the Chileans, fooling the Navy long enough that the AAI is no longer as beholden to them.
  • Martial Pacifist: Pujato prefers peaceful exploration than warfare, but he still has a well-stocked armory in San Martín so that Argentine Antarctica won't be pushed around too easily by their neighbors.
  • Passing the Torch: A temporary example where Leal and most of his comrades head back home during the summer for a break, with Pujato personally chosen to represent the Argentine Antarctic Institute until they return.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Pujato is utterly distraught if Operación 90 succeeds, but at the cost of more than 3 crew members dying. For the rest of his life, he will be haunted with the knowledge that he led those men to their deaths and feels nothing but mockery as he sees the planted Argentinian flag wave before him.
  • Red Baron: He's nicknamed the "Conqueror of the White Desert'' because he led Argentina's exploration of Antarctica during the 1940s and 50s, founding the San Martín Base and the Instituto Antártico Argentino.
  • Reluctant Retiree: Subverted. After Perón was overthrown, Pujato would've also been punished with a forced retirement, since he was popular and received a promotion to General under his reign. However, Pujato was spared this fate as a reward for founding San Martín Base and greatly aiding Argentina's race in the Scramble for Antarctica.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: After rescuing the survivors of the Rosario and San Martín, Pujato can break out more medical supplies to keep them alive, even though this will reduce the stockpile needed for Operación 90's success.
  • Stealing the Credit: The lease of Galindez Island to the Italians will be credited to Pujato, even though Lieutenant Zavala does all the heavy lifting to settle the arrangement. Leal lets him have the credit to keep him content, but he also privately tells Zavala that he deserves all the credit.
  • Stronger Than They Look: Pujato might be old, but he moves with surprising energy and travels even faster than some of the younger men in Operación 90.
  • Training from Hell: Pujato can make his men train outside, despite the winter snow flurrying in the faces of everyone. He gives them strict orders and tolerates no minor mistake that could cost someone's life, keeping them outside just before the moment his men would suffer long-term damage.
  • Was It Really Worth It?: If more than 3 crew members die in Operación 90, Pujato realizes that his long-desired journey wasn't worth the casualties sustained. Unfortunately, it's too late to do anything about it by this point and the best thing he can do is remember those who sacrificed themselves on the journey.
  • White-Dwarf Starlet: Pujato used to be wildly popular until Perón was overthrown. Now, Pujato's only supporters are his family and close friends, where he's no longer welcomed in Argentina with cheers or recognition. Grumbling, Pujato hopes to repair his reputation.

Emilio Eduardo Massera

  • Bad Boss: When his flotilla is trapped in an ice floe, Massera takes what few ships he can to pass through a lead and leaves most of his men behind to fend for themselves.
  • Didn't Think This Through: After his failed invasion of Adelaide Island, Massera hopes that he can disguise the blatant aggression by hiding the damage and framing everything as an accidental fire gone out of control. The fact that so many witnesses know the truth never crosses his mind and Pujato internally thinks how poorly thought out the plan was.
  • The Dreaded: As the Captain of the Argentinian navy, Massera's name evokes fear in the AAI over how he might bully them or try militarizing the Antarctic base.
  • General Failure: He commands a flotilla to invade Chile's Adelaide Base, but makes numerous short-sighted decisions that doom the attack:
    • His first mistake is sailing right into an ice floe, freezing and trapping the ships until they are cut free.
    • When an opening does appear, only three ships, including his own, can pass through, and Massera still doesn't have the intelligence to call a retreat, believing that surprise will make up his inferior numbers.
    • It's later revealed that Massera was using outdated information to plan his attack on Adelaide Island, which has been armed with fortifications in case of an Argentinian invasion. The planes are ripped apart by anti-aircraft fire, two of the assault boats are destroyed before they land, and many of the soldiers who did land are torn apart by machine gun fire and bombardment from a naval gun. Though the island is eventually taken, so many soldiers are killed that Massera can't possibly garrison it and is forced to retreat.
  • General Ripper: Massera has no interest in the AAI's peaceful endeavors on Antarctica, believing that the only form of "heroism" is starting a war with Chile and utterly destroying them.
  • Glory Hound: He invades Adelaide Island to provoke a war with Chile, expecting to lead the charge and take credit for Argentina's victory. If Operación 90 ends in failure and the crew are killed, Massera takes over and plans a larger invasion of Chile's Antarctic territory, arrogant enough that he will do so, regardless of the government's approval, and believing that this will pave the way to a potential presidency.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: If Leal returns from the South Pole alive, Massera is furious to read the headlines praising his heroism and bravery, jealous that his own achievements are being overshadowed.
  • I Control My Minions Through...: He has the support of almost everyone in the Almirante Brown Naval Department, either because they like his hawkish behavior or because he liberally shared the loot he gained from raiding ships in the Second Italo-Turksih War.
  • Insane Admiral: Massera repeatedly invades Chilean territory to risk war with them and is content to let his men harass or even murder their foreign neighbors to assert Argentina's dominance. Massera had a similarly callous attitude in the Second Italo-Turkish War, where he robbed and murdered merchant mariners.
  • Karma Houdini: Even though he got many Argentinian and Chilean soldiers killed in his invasion, Massera is among the survivors rescued from the trapped flotilla and may require Pujato to leave Operación 90's crew to keep an eye on him, in case he tries anything else.
  • Let No Crisis Go to Waste: After Operación 90 ends in disaster and Leal is killed, Massera immediately moves to take over Argentine Antarctica and starts militarizing for a final war against Chile, even if it violates the government's will.
  • Might Makes Right: By his philosophy, the seas are ruled by strong men who attack and cull the weak, while looting their resources for themselves. Any rules of conduct are pointless in his eyes and created by "weaker men".
  • Never My Fault: Despite leading the disastrous Battle of Adelaide Island, Massera still has the nerve to blame his men for failing him.
  • Pet the Dog: When the Almirante Brown is trapped by an ice floe for a second time, Massera tells the crew of the Rosario and San Martín to leave himself and the ship behind so they can find the nearest naval facility and save themselves.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Massera's invasion of Adelaide Island is technically successful, but so many casualties were inflicted that it can hardly be considered a victory. Not to mention that they now lack the manpower or the munitions to garrison the place or prepare for a Chilean counterattack. Massera and his surviving crew are forced to abandon the island and clean up the mess to make it seem like there was an accidental fire.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: When informed that he'll lose most of his flotilla from being trapped in an ice floe, Massera still believes he can take on the Chileans with the element of surprise, comparing himself to Hannibal Barca, who lost many elephants and men to the Alps before invading Rome. It never occurs to him that he's no Hannibal and is just a self-deluding, disheveled failure of a Captain.
  • Warhawk: Massera's influence represents a threat to the AAI's peaceful exploration missions, advocating a new arms race and invasion of Chilean territory in Antarctica. His surprise visit to Esperanza Base heightens this threat and the stakes of Operación 90 succeeding, as the AAI will need to prove their worthiness in this mission.
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer…: He considers war and violent weapons to be the means and ends to all conflict, no matter how small. When the Almirante is trapped in a pack of ice, Massera's solution is to blow it up.
  • You Are in Command Now: After the disappearance of the Operación 90 expedition, the territory is placed under the interim naval command of Admiral Massera.

    Chilean Antarctic Territory
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aac.png
Official Name: Chilean Antarctica
Ruling Party: Dirección Antártica Chilenanote
Ideology: Antarctic Administrationnote

  • Bilingual Bonus: "Chilean Navy" and "Antarctic Naval Base 'Arturo Prat'" are written in Spanish on their flag, communicating who is in charge of this slice of the continent.
  • Butt-Monkey: During the Scramble for Antarctica, Chile pulled the short end of the stick and lost most of their claimed territories to Argentina, despite the fact that they were the first to do so in the early twentieth century. Still, Guzmán hasn't given up on taking back what Chile deserves.
  • The Dreaded: The Chilean Navy is far superior to the Argentinian Navy, making them a feared sight for Argentine sailors, especially those manning outdated vessels unfit to ride Antarctic waters.
  • Elite Army: The Chilean Antarctic Territory is disorganized and small, meaning that any cession of land would threaten their entire claim. To prevent this, the Chilean garrison is professionally trained to fight in cold weather and motivated to defend their territory if their rivals try to steal it.
  • Enemy Mine: The Chileans discreetly approach the OFN for a potential alliance to kick out their mutual enemies in Antarctica. Phleger is sent to Santiago to formalize the agreement.
  • Misplaced Retribution: If the Chilean Antarctic Territory discovers Operación 90, they will intercept and destroy Sobral Base in retaliation for Argentina invading Adelaide Island. Unfortunately, their target is owned by the AAI, who never wanted war with Chile; it was the Navy who pushed for the attack.
  • A Plot in Deed: Subverted. Chile's Antarctic claims are based on Castilian inheritance claims and the terms set by the Treaty of Tordesillas, but in the cutthroat world of geopolitics, no one's going to care about centuries-old treaties and what they entail.
  • Quality over Quantity: The Chileans may have a smaller navy than Argentina, but they are much more technologically advanced and have missile cruisers that decimated the Argentinian Navy in the Snipe Incident.
  • The Rival: The Chilean Antarctic Territory really hate the Argentinians and the feeling is mutual. They have had competing territorial claims for decades and Argentina threw any chance of peaceful resolution away when its Navy invaded western Antarctica and the Beagle Channel during the Snipe War.

  • Beware the Quiet Ones: Guzmán rules by calm diplomacy and wants to maintain a low profile until one of his neighbors falters and gives Chile an opening to seize their claimed territory.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Guzmán's calls for Chile to claim their inherited Antarctic land from Castilian claims was key to motivating the country to move into the continent. Unfortunately, a lot of other nations took wind of this and out-negotiated Chile to swipe their claimed territory for themselves. Even more ironically, Argentina used some of Guzmán's studies to give more legitimacy to their land claims.

    French Southern and Antarctic Lands
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/flag_of_the_french_southern_and_antarctic_lands_tnotl.png
Official Name: French Southern and Antarctic Lands
Ruling Party: CCTAAF
Ideology: Antarctic Administrationnote

  • Authority in Name Only: Similarly to French Madagascar, the Germans are really the ones calling the shots on the governance of the territory. In the French Antarctica teaser, German soldiers garrison the land as a supply point for Neuschwabenland, furthered by the French government only investing the bare minimum into managing the territory.
  • Color Motif: All of their national spirits in the French Antarctic teaser are colored blue and white, symbolizing the frigidity and loneliness that pervades the islands.
  • Commonality Connection: Despite the various backgrounds of the French settlers, they've developed a shared identity in the struggle to survive the harsh Kerguelen Islands. This has created a unique dialect of French called Taafien, which includes slang relating to technical terms and inside jokes.
  • Cope by Creating: The settlers of Port-au-Francais try to feel more at home by creating French styled establishments like a pâtisserie and a concrete chapel. Unfortunately, the French Antarctica teaser shows that such efforts do little to make the citizens feel comfortable, due to the isolation and militarization.
  • Crazy-Prepared: In the French Antarctic teaser, the Germans have extensively militarized the Kerguelens as an integral part of the supply chain to their claims in Antarctica. Grande Terre is an active military base with a harbor and airfield, where barbed wire litters the coasts, despite there being little risk of an actual invasion and much of the garrison being redeployed elsewhere.
  • Island Base: Since Adélie Land, France's only claim on the Antarctic continent, was stolen by the OAA in the French Antarctic teaser, the TAAF is only in control of the Kerguelen, Crozet, Scattered, and St. Paul and Amsterdam Islands. However, Richert longs for a day to reclaim Adélie Land.
  • Meaningful Name: The French subculture that developed on the Kerguelen Islands, Taafien, is named after the acronym for the French name of the of the administration, the "Terres australes et antarctiques françaises".
  • Minor Major Character: As shown in the French Antarctic teaser, this small series of islands are also an important waystation for Germany to send supplies to their main territory in Neuschwabenland, keeping them in the race for Antarctica.
  • Rag Tag Bunch Of Misfits: The French settlers of the Kerguelen Islands, as seen in their dedicated teaser, come from a variety of backgrounds, including colonial soldiers, bureaucrats, whalers, and adventurers, in addition to the German soldiers present.
  • Rich Sibling, Poor Sibling: Jacques and Pierre have radically different statuses in the French Antarctic teaser. Jacques is a highly respected oceanographer and celebrity beloved by every side in the Cold War for his groundbreaking marine documentaries. Meanwhile, Pierre is a washed-up, forgettable Vichy journalist, whose career has since hit a dead end.
  • Settling the Frontier: France has laid claim to the Kerguelen Islands for centuries, but, for most of that history, there were no settlements beyond the the occasional scientist or whaler. This changed during the Scramble for Antarctica, which prompted the creation of more long-term settlements containing French and German settlers, as seen in the French Antarctica teaser.
  • Shocking Defeat Legacy: During the Scramble for Antarctica, the OFN launched Operation Deep Freeze, during which the French claims in Antarctica in Adélie Land were seized. As shown in the French Antarctica teaser, this has relegated France to a secondary player in the continent, further cementing France's subjugation under Germany and declining colonial ambitions.
  • Shown Their Work: The TAAF flag was actually created in the OTL 1950's, doodled by Richert. Notably, this timeline's flag has three stars because the OTL flag's five stars represent the five Antarctic territories owned by the real-life TAAF: the Kerguelen, Crozet, Scattered, St. Paul and Amsterdam Islands, and Adélie Land. However, since the OFN seized Adélie Land in the French Antarctic teaser, it would make less sense for the flag to have five stars, so it has three to represent the number of stars on Richert's uniform instead.
  • Sibling Team: The French government has endorsed and funded the latest documentary by Jacques to film the ecosystem of the Kerguelen Islands. However, due to a lack of trust for the Anglophile, they also insisted that his staunchly pro-fascist brother, Pierre, go along to keep an eye on him in the French Antarctica teaser. Pierre never imagined his dying career to land him in Antarctica, but he will do so for France and his brother.
  • Small, Secluded World: In its dedicated teaser, the French Antarctic administration rules over a collection of islands and rocks in the Antarctic Ocean that are barely inhabited and represent some of the last untouched ecosystems on Earth. The capital, Port-au-Francais, only has a few hundred semi-permanent residents. However, the remoteness is also Exploited by the Einheitspakt to film a documentary about it, which would truthfully be a Propaganda Piece to downplay their Antarctic military ventures.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Many of the French settlers on the Kerguelen Islands are frustrated by the domineering German military presence, which has disrupted the natural environment and made Port-aux-Francais more German than French, as seen in the French Antarctic teaser. The only people who aren't that upset are the whalers who have made a fortune on the islands and the oceanographers out for exploration.

In-Game Biography Click to Show

  • Jaded Professional: According to the French Antarctica teaser, Richert once enjoyed ruling over the Kerguelen Islands with its isolated and natural environment, when he was first appointed in September 1955. The aftermath of the Snipe War in 1958 led to the Scramble for Antarctica, which resulted in the rapid militarisation of the islands on behalf of the Germans, much to Richert's frustration.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Subverted. Despite not being in a position to reassert French claims over Antarctica proper in their dedicated teaser, Richert stills hopes to one day reclaim Adélie Land from the OFN.
  • Pet the Dog: Richert tries to make the most of his depressing situation in the French Antarctica teaser by protecting the French settlers from German dominance and assisting the Cousteau brothers in their documentary, the latter of which brings Richert some minor relief.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: Richert is a French collaborator to the Nazis, but there is a reason why he is called Prefect of the Penguins in his teased biography. He was content to govern in relative isolation, mostly surrounded by the wildlife who call the Antarctic Islands home, in which he doesn't approve of the Germans militarizing his turf. Stuck with Jacques and Pierre, Richert longs for the early years of his administration.
  • Red Baron: Richert is nicknamed the "Prefect of the Penguins" because there were few actual people inhabiting Antarctica, at least until the Germans arrived in the French Antarctica teaser.

  • Ambiguous Situation: Under pressure from Pierre and Germany in the French Antarctic teaser, Jacques is tasked with filming his next documentary in the Kerguelen Islands and downplaying Germany's military ventures there. It is unclear if he took the job for fame, money, or a favor to Pierre, a question that he has yet to answer to the press.
  • Bold Explorer: Jacques is a former French Navy man who has a passion for exploring Earth's ecosystems and developing new photographic techniques to capture his sightings. In the French Antarctic teaser, his new task is filming the Kerguelen Islands, one of Earth's last unfilmed locations, a venture specifically handed to him by Germany.
  • Foreign Culture Fetish: Jacques is described by his teased biography as an Anglophile, which draws suspicion on to him from the French government.
  • Legacy Seeker: One Discussed reason for why he is crafting a documentary in the Kerguelen Islands, as shown in the French Antarctica teaser, is so that he can add another crowning piece to his legendary filmography.
  • Loved by All: Jacques films and books on marine life has made him universally beloved international celebrity across all factions of the Cold War, as shown in the French Antarctica teaser. However, the French government wants to exploit this for propagandistic purposes, which risks ruining his carefully crafted reputation.
  • Mysterious Past: Despite being a world-famous celebrity, not much is known about Jacques' career in French naval intelligence, thanks to his brother's intervention in the French Antarctic teaser.
  • Nature Lover: Like in OTL, Jacques is an adventurer and oceanographer who likes to film the natural world and conduct marine experiments. He has also invented various exploratory and photographic techniques for these purposes.
  • Only in It for the Money: In the French Antarctic teaser, it's suspected by some that Jacques took up the gig to film the Kerguelen Islands because he's being paid a lot for it, ignoring the propagandistic purposes of diverting attention away from Germany's militarization of Antarctica.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: Since his brother is well-connected in Vichy political circles, Jacques' career was not impeded by rumors of him being connected to the resistance and received government support to finance his career. As shown in the French Antarctic teaser, this was a resounding success.

  • Betrayal Insurance: While the French government approves of Jacques' filming of the Kerguelen Islands, they do not trust him due to his Anglophilia and rumored connections to the resistance. Thus, in the French Antarctica teaser, Pierre is sent to be the betrayal insurance, watching over him and making sure he doesn't do anything treasonous.
  • Les Collaborateurs: Pierre was an enthusiastic supporter of the Vichy regime since the moment it was formed. Once a communist in his youth, he turned to fascism in the 1930s and started writing anti-Semitic and hardline articles, which won him approval from the new regime.
  • Dead End Job: Pierre was once a rising star within the French State, but his career has come to a screeching halt with his reassignment to the Kerguelen Islands. However, as shown in the French Antarctic teaser, Pierre will adhere to his duty to France and his family.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Even though his brother isn't as much of an enthusiastic fascist, Pierre still goes out of his way to protect him from government prosecution and investigation into his alleged connections to the resistance. His connections even allowed Jacques to become a celebrity, despite the drastically different circumstances seen in the French Antarctic teaser.
  • Immoral Journalist: Pierre is a staunch fascist, anti-Semite, and collaborator who wrote journalistic pieces and used it as a springboard to have a career in the French State. His well-proven loyalty in journalism is the reason why he is sent to the Kerguelen Islands in the French Antarctic teaser: to keep an eye on his less loyal brother.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Pierre is a vicious anti-Semite and fascist, which made him a natural fit in the Vichy regime. With a far better proven loyalty to the Pakt, Pierre has to keep an eye on his brother in Antarctica and ensure that his Anglophilic sentiments don't get too out of control.
  • The Reliable One: Despite not being as famous as Jacques, Pierre is considered more reliable by the French State. In the French Antarctic teaser, they trust him enough to monitor his brother in the Kerguelen Islands and keep filming the documentary that will serve the regime's propagandistic purposes.
  • Successful Sibling Syndrome: Pierre is the older brother to world-renowned filmmaker Jacques Cousteau. Pierre's teased biography hints at some resentment that he wound up in a dead-end career, while Jacques was never prosected for alleged ties to the resistance and became famous, all thanks to being protected by his sibling. Matters are made worse when Pierre is sent to the Kerguelen Islands to watch over Jacques, regarding it as a bleak future on the a frigid island.

Official Name: Italian Antarctic Research Zone
Ruling Party: Programma Nazionale di Ricerche in Antartidenote
Ideology: Antarctic Administrationnote

  • Bilingual Bonus: Their flag has Italian text that translates to "National Antarctic Research Program", disguising their intrusion into the continent as a purely civilian affair.
  • Blatant Lies: Leasing Galindez Island from Argentina, Italy promises that it will strictly be dedicated to civilian research and never be militarized. Almost nobody believes them and highly suspect that the Italian Navy will arrive at some point.
  • Didn't Think This Through: After the Triumvirate's dissolution, Italy gains a lease on Galindez Island in exchange for more economic concessions and military equipment to Antarctica. They believe this will be a simple step in expanding their international influence, but they put little thought into actually preparing to survive the extreme conditions. Pujato notes their use of thick wool greatcoats instead of loose winter clothing, so their coats will be absorbing more moisture and allowing sweat to freeze on their bodies, increasing the risk of hypothermia. The real winners are the Argentinians, with Pujato hoping that he'll gain a medal or even a promotion for the one-sided deal.

Role: Head of State
Party: Programma Nazionale di Ricerche in Antartidenote
Ideology: Antarctic Administrationnote

  • Pet the Dog: If given supplies to survive the winter by Argentina, Torrisi will repay their generosity by promising to defend Leal's authority in case the Argentinian Navy tries to do something while he's adventuring in Operación 90.
  • Wrong Line of Work: For a supposed civilian research station, it's strange that Italy would send Torrisi, an admiral in the navy, to lead it. It's the biggest hint that Italy intends to use their colony as a naval outpost, not for research.

  • Bilingual Bonus: The organization heading Brazil's entry into Antarctica, the Brazilian Antarctic Programme, has their name written in Portuguese on their flag too.
  • Let No Crisis Go to Waste: Brazil has always desired a slice of Antarctica and will get its chance when the OFN approaches Brazil for a joint invasion of Neuschwabenland.
  • Please Select New City Name: After establishing their Antarctic claim in Operation Southern Cross, Brazil will rename the formerly German Ritscher Coast to Coats land. The Paul Joseph Goebbels Memorial Outpost will be renamed to honour Brazilian admiral Henrique Aristides Guilhem.
  • The Rival: As soon as the Brazilians make it to Antarctica, they start a territorial dispute with Argentina. However, Reedy makes it clear to Rademaker that the OAA isn't going to get dragged into the conflict, making the rivalry purely one-to-one.

OFN Antarctic Administration

    OFN Antarctic Administration
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aao.png
Flag of the US Antarctic Region
Official Name: OFN Antarctic Administration, US Antarctic Region (OFN Administration dissolution)
Ruling Party: United States Antarctic Development Command
Ideology: Antarctic Administrationnote
Formed from the Australian, New Zealand, and former French claims during the Scramble for Antarctica, the OFN Antarctic Administration controls nearly half of the world's southernmost continent. The massive swath of land acts as an important staging base for OFN operations in and around the Indian Ocean, with minor military installations and naval bases dotting the coast. With the completion of the nuclear power plant at McMurdo Station, it is clear that the OFN's presence on the continent will only continue to expand. However, much like the rest of the OFN, the Administration's direction has been thoroughly dominated by the will of the United States Military, something that Australia and New Zealand would like to see change in the near future.

See its recap page here.

  • Authority in Name Only: The Australians and New Zealanders are supposed to be governing the OAA with the same relative authority as the Americans. Truthfully, the United States are clearly the ones in control, with the other two countries sidelined and left to fume.
  • Balkanize Me: If the OFN Administration has low legitimacy it will dissolve into the American, Australian, and New Zealand Antarctic territories.
  • Black Site: The Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) is a project management tool employed by the Polaris Missile Development Program, secretly developing nuclear missiles in lonely Antarctica. Their latest endeavor is the Iceman Missile Development Project, whose development will be kept so secret that the design teams will be kept ignorant of each other's progress.
  • Boring, but Practical: One of the OFN's main defenses is sawdust, which some of the uninitiated soldiers laugh at. Unknown to them, sawdust can be mixed with water and frozen to create pykrete, creating a fortification as strong as concrete.
  • Difficult, but Awesome: Nuclear reactors are a fragile business that must be carefully handled, especially in an extreme climate like in Antarctica; one slip-up or enemy sabotage could cost the OAA a lot of money and/or lives. For example, a small, near-invisible crack can be dangerous because water can leak in and damage the inner shield. However, harnessing it has allowed McMurdo to be one of the largest and most successful bases in Antarctica, opening the potential for possible settlement on the continent.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Years of being sidelined by the Americans leads the Australians and New Zealanders to form a truce against them, with Beale and Hillary conspiring to replace Raborn.
  • Elaborate Underground Base: McMurdo Station is the closest thing to a city in Antarctica, housing several thousands of personnel in its insulated tunnels and corridors, filled with amenities like a coffee machine, couches, a hot plate, and emergency snacks.
  • Enemy Mine: To round up as much manpower against Neuschwabenland, the OAA forges an unlikely truce with the Brazilians, who want their own slice of the Antarctic continent.
  • In Spite of a Nail: The Allied defeat in World War II led to the United States postponing most of their Antarctic programs indefinitely, including Operation Highjump. However, they would ultimately return to the continent anyway during the Scramble.
  • Let No Crisis Go to Waste:
    • In the Scramble for Antarctica, the OFN launched Operation Deep Freeze to militarize their holdings on the continent and forcibly seize Adélie Land, previously wedged between Australian claims, away from the Vichy French regime.
    • Taking advantage of German’s inability to send supplies after the start of the German civil war, the Joint Chiefs of Staff will approve Operation Southern Cross, a joint OFN military operation to capture territory from Neuschwabenland with help from Brazil and Uruguay. How much territory they capture will depend on how well-prepared they are.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Project Iceman is a very confidential plan involving the development of nuclear missiles, so secret that some design members complain that they don't know the true nature of their work. Not even Beale and Hillary have a clue for what's going on; whenever they inquire about the deliveries, the Americans lie that it's for a base expansion.
  • Multinational Team: The OAA is run by Americans, Australians, and New Zealanders. The crew manning McMurdo are also ethnically diverse, including African Americans, Māoris, and Asian refugees from the Commonwealth colonies.
  • Multiple Endings: When it becomes clear that tensions in the OFN are mounting, Raborn resigns and lets someone else take over. The future of the OAA will depend on which country has the most influence:
    • If the United States has the most influence, Rickover succeeds Raborn, continuing the America-centric approach of the OAA and continuing its militarization in defense of the "free world", even if this means shortchanging the Australians and New Zealanders.
    • If Australia has the most influence, Beale takes over and advocates a more equitable relationship among the three countries participating in the OAA. However, he keeps up the militarization programs and plans to expand the nuclear reactor systems to create more livable bases, like McMurdo.
    • If New Zealand has the most influence, Hillary takes the most radical shift away from Raborn's militarization in favor of a more scientific administration, ending the arms race.
  • Please Select New City Name: After invading Neuschwabenland in Operation Southern Cross, the OFN Administration will give new names to the former German land.note
  • Settling the Frontier: With the harnessing of nuclear energy, there are some long-term plans of possible habitation or colonization in Antarctica, though these will remain dreams so long as the political deadlock persists in the Administration. Beale's takeover of the OAA makes it more likely that this goal will be achieved, given his interest in creating more nuclear reactor systems.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: The Australians and New Zealanders dislike how the Administration's direction has been thoroughly dominated by the will of the United States Military, and demand a more prominent role in running the territory, as the land it occupies was originally claimed by them before the United States 'consolidated' the territory during the Scramble.
  • Third-Party Peacekeeper: The OFN has tried mediating the territorial disputes between Argentina and Chile in Antarctica. They first tried giving peace a chance in a 1955 conference, but this was canceled when Juan Perón was deposed and Germany dropped out. The OFN tried their luck again in 1958, but the Argentinian Navy hated the idea of an OFN-controlled conference that would demilitarize the continent, so they invaded Chile's territory in the Snipe War and caused the negotiations to fall through.
  • Title Drop: The background lore describes the OFN's consolidation of their Antarctician territories under the command of Admiral Byrd in an effort called "Operation Deep Freeze".
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: The civilian scientists are more interested in subjects like the weather or the fauna, while the military researchers find them boring and conduct their own weapons and vehicle tests. Despite this, they have a shared interest in the advancement of knowledge and remain friendly with each other.
  • Worthy Opponent: The United States Antarctic Service Expedition explored much of the southern continent in the 1940s and was led by Rear Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd. His efforts were respected by Alfred Ritscher, who invited him to the Third German Antarctic Expedition, something that Byrd declined due to the deteriorating relations between their home countries.

  • Best Served Cold: Raborn is eager to assist the Americans in the Balintawak Blitz, which has rendered Japan's control of the Philippines vulnerable and given them a chance to avenge their loss in World War II.
  • Big Damn Heroes: His most famous achievement was repairing the USS Hancock CV-19's flight deck in under four hours during a Japanese kamikaze attack in the Pacific. His efforts allowed the carrier to escape safely and avoid being sunk like the rest of the American Pacific Fleet at Iwo Jima.
  • Graceful Loser: He's not completely comfortable with Hillary taking over the OAA and shifting gears towards a more scientific approach, but Raborn still respects a peaceful transfer of power, if New Zealand's influence is highest. As Hillary is given the microphone, Raborn gives him a sympathetic look before he steps away.
  • Heavy Sleeper: Inverted. As a naval veteran, Raborn learned to fall asleep quickly, but wake up twice as fast whenever he's needed.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Operation Southern Cross pushes into German territory and allows the Brazilians to set up their own outpost, but his advisors make it clear that a direct siege on Schirmacher Station would be ill-advised. Their men are exhausted and the Nazis will fight back with everything they've got, now that their back is against the wall, so Raborn calls for a retreat and surrenders any further attacks on the Germans.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: After months of keeping Project Iceman secret from his subordinates, Raborn is kept in the dark himself by his benefactors, who start Iceworm II without briefing him first.
  • Magnum Opus: Raborn's claim to fame is getting a UGM-27 Polaris Missile working four years ahead of schedule via the PERT. Such an achievement is unprecedented in rocket design, earning him a promotion to Vice Admiral in 1960 and making him the OFN's man to continue missile development in Antarctica.
  • No-Respect Guy: His management of the OFN's Antarctic territory has largely been a thankless job, with OFN allies and politicians continuing to hound him about all sorts of problems.
  • Pet the Dog: For all his personal faults, Raborn's exit from leadership is quite gracious. When Hillary, Beale, and Wright confront him about the OAA's tensions, Raborn agrees that a change in leadership is needed to avert the looming crisis and tells them that it's been a honor to work with them.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: With Neuschwabenland cut off from supplies from Germania, Raborn can choose to answer their call for help with emergency supplies to the struggling territory.
"In any other situation, we would have told them to go to hell, but things are different down here. It doesn't matter where you're from, we all freeze the same."
  • Stay in the Kitchen: Raborn is a misogynist who doesn't believe a woman is capable of leading an independent research mission. Hillary openly disapproves of this attitude and argues with Raborn about finding female candidates to bring to the OAA.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: By organizing Operation Southern Cross, Raborn sacrifices hundreds of lives in a pointless war against the Germans for tracts of uninhabitable desert, but he's convinced that it will somehow deal a blow to fascism and tyranny abroad. When he realizes how many losses will ensue by attacking Schirmacher Station, Raborn calls off the attack.
  • Wrong Line of Work: Raborn is a military man entrenched in politics and paperwork that bores or worries him. He considers his cramped office in McMurdo an alien place compared to the bridge of a carrier or a missile silo, environments he's far more comfortable in.

James R. Reedy

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aao_hog_james_r_reedy_large.png
Role: Head of Government (Raborn cabinet)
Ideology: Paternalism
In-Game Biography (Head of Government) Click to Show

  • Continuity Snarl: Reedy’s biography states that he served in the same unit with Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., the son of President Joseph Kennedy, lore which has since been changed in the main mod.
  • I Work Alone: Reedy prefers doing things himself. Even while fighting Kriegsmarine patrols during World War II, he'd always add a personal spin to the assignments he received.
  • Number Two: Reedy commands Naval Support Force Antarctica, serving as the right-hand man to Vice Admiral Raborn.
  • Victory Through Intimidation: Reedy's main job is keeping the Germans and Japanese out of the OAA's waters in Antarctica and the Indian Ocean. If there are intruders, he'll send some ships to intimidate them into leaving, but never open fire because he doesn't want to start World War III.

Herman Phleger

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aao_formin_herman_phleger_large.png
Role: Foreign Minister (Raborn cabinet)
Party: United States Antarctic Development Command
Ideology: Conservatism
In-Game Biography (Foreign Minister) Click to Show

  • Minor Major Character: He doesn't get much limelight, but he played a tantamount role to Antarctica's current political situation: he was the Chairman of the U.S. delegation that mediated Chile and Argentina's current territories, and he founded the OFN Antarctic Administration out of Australia, New Zealand, and France's claims.
  • My Country, Right or Wrong: Pleger hates the monotony of Antarctica and the petty political fights over who controls the continent, but he carries out his job anyway because it's his duty to the OFN.
  • Old Friend: Phleger is an old friend of John F. Kennedy, being well-acquainted with his family since his time at Harvard Law. The two reunite when Phleger goes to D.C. and discusses the OAA's budget on a riverside stroll.

William "Rip" Robertson

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aao_secmin_william_robertson_large.png
Role: Security Minister (Raborn cabinet)
Party: United States Antarctic Development Command
Ideology: Paternalism
In-Game Biography (Security Minister) Click to Show

  • Ambiguous Situation: He was originally a member of the CIA's Special Activities Division in the Soviet Union before being transferred to Southeast Asia for reasons that elude even Raborn. He's been questioned about it before, but Robertson has never spilled.
  • Bearer of Bad News: Robertson captures photos of the Germans' latest nuclear tests and brings them back to the Administration. The collective reaction is one of high concern that the Germans could outpace the OFN in the nuclear arms race.
  • Who Needs Enemies?: Robertson leads the Military Assistance Command, Antarctica, Studies and Observations Group (MACA-SOG), a group that operates independently from the Administration and tends to overstep their jurisdiction by assisting OFN operations in the Indian Ocean.

Hyman Rickover

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_aao_hyman_rickover.png
Role: Head of State (Raborn successor)
Party: United States Antarctic Development Command
Ideology: Antarctic Administrationnote

  • America Saves the Day: He subscribes to the notion that only the United States is capable of defending the world from fascism and tyranny, and he expects Beale and Hillary to stand aside, lest America's hand be forced.
  • The Determinator: Rickover is not deterred by Beale and Hillary's complaints about his reign. No matter what, he will stand tall as an American vanguard in Antarctica, protecting it from fascist or hostile threats who oppose the OFN.
  • Immigrant Patriotism: Rickover was born in Poland to a Jewish family, who immigrated to the United States. He's also the most pro-American of Raborn's successors, having full faith that the United States can contain the spread of fascism through decisive military action.
  • Meet the New Boss: Rickover becomes the OAA's new leader if the American influence is higher than the other countries, representing a continuation of the American-centric direction of the organization, at the expense of Australia and New Zealand.

Howard Beale

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_aao_howard_beale.png
Role: Economy Minister (Raborn cabinet), Head of State (Raborn successor)
Party: Australian Antarctic Division
Ideology: Liberalism, Antarctic Administrationnote  (Head of State)
In-Game Biography (Economy Minister) Click to Show

  • Magnum Opus: His most well-known achievement is building a nuclear reactor that turned McMurdo Station into a powerhouse and one of the largest bases in Antarctica. American and Australian politicians gave him mutual praise for his work and made him one of the highest-ranking non-American officials in the OAA.
  • Meet the New Boss: Beale doesn't see a problem with the OAA's militarization, but he thinks that the Americans are becoming too overbearing and ignorant to their allies' needs. If he takes over, the Australians will now be in charge, but the same military programs will continue under his leadership.
  • Worthy Opponent: While the American administration opposes bidding more control to their OFN allies, they share the Australians' respect for Beale, namely his expansion of McMurdo Station and construction of a new nuclear power facility.

Edmund Hillary

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_aao_edmund_hillary.png
Role: Head of State (Raborn successor)
Party: Department of Scientific and Industrial Research - New Zealand Antarctic Research Programme
Ideology: Antarctic Administrationnote

  • Bold Explorer: Along with Tenzing Norgay, Edmund Hillary was one of the first two men to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1953. Thus, unlike most in the OAA, Hillary enjoys his stay in Antarctica, considering himself an explorer in the most isolated continent on Earth. Unfortunately, he can't really venture to his content because of the politicking, a fact that upsets him and something he hopes he can reverse.
  • Challenge Seeker: It's difficult being the only voice calling for demilitarization in the OAA, but Hillary has a guilty pleasure of enjoying the challenge.
  • Dark Horse Victory: Hillary is the least likely to succeed Raborn, as New Zealand has the lowest starting influence of the three countries. Virtually no predictions are made that he will take over the OAA and many express surprise if he does.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Given differing world circumstances, Hillary never goes on an expedition to the South Pole in the 1950s.
  • Graceful Loser: If Leal's expedition to the South Pole is successful, Hillary is one of the few OFN higher-ups who is genuinely happy for his triumph and the advancement of science. He considers sending a letter congratulating the man, but forfeits this idea because of his paranoid security team.
  • He-Man Woman Hater: Averted. Hillary is one of the few figures in the OAA who has no problem working with a female scientist and he was the one who convinced Raborn to invite Jones to Antarctica. And, contrary to Jones' fears, he accepts her handpicked, all-women team for a mission and jokes that Raborn is going to freak out about the news.
  • Richard Nixon, the Used Car Salesman: Due to the heightened Cold War tensions to control Antarctica, Hillary was not allowed to go on an expedition to the South Pole, like he did in OTL. Instead, he's been busy running the OAA and ensuring that it does not fall to German or Japanese intrusion.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: When Neuschwabenland demands the extradition of forty defectors, Hillary is adamant that they deny the request and risk a diplomatic crisis. He appeals to the OFN as a safe haven for those escaping oppression, including Germans, and argues that turning in these defectors will betray their ideals.
  • Unexpected Successor: Of the possible predictions made for Raborn’s successor, few expected that he would’ve picked Hillary to succeed him.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Hillary is a Christian and a humanist who came to Antarctica because he thought it'd be a place dedicated to the preservation of the "human spirit". He's opposed to fighting and wants a peaceful administration that can cooperate with the Germans and the Japanese for the betterment of the human race. Unfortunately, many consider his hope woefully misplaced or even a threat to the OFN's interests.
Searching for hope, the Exile gazed back.

Charles Seymour Wright

Role: N/A

  • Living Legend: Sir Charles Seymour Wright from Canada is one of the most experienced and respected Antarctic explorers still living. He survived the disastrous Terra Nova Expedition, is a polymath, and has made contributions to many subjects, like radar and oceanography. When he comes to the OAA for a visit, a massive crowd gathers and cheers for him.
  • Stronger Than They Look: Wright is seventy-five years old, but he's remarkably energetic for his age.
  • Wild Card: Wright isn't in the race to succeed Raborn, so he's given independent choice of whether to back the Australians, the New Zealanders, or the Americans.

Kenneth Wahlman

Role: N/A

  • Exhausted Eye Bags: Wahlman is constantly working with the nuclear reactor out of fear of an accident, giving him noticeable eye bags.
  • Improperly Paranoid: Zig-Zagged. When a senior engineer finds some fissures on the nuclear reactor's vessel, Wahlman gets paranoid about future accidents that could compromise McMurdo. Since then, he's unreasonably hard on his subordinates to keep watch on the reactor, descending further into paranoia as accidents keep happening. However, it later turns out that such accidents happened because of an Ahnenerbe spy, so Wahlmann was right to be suspicious; he was just anxious about the wrong thing.
  • Mean Boss: As a paranoiac, Wahlman is reputed as a bossy guy who isn't easy to work with. However, uprooting Oliver as the mole and listening more to his friend Jeremy causes him to subvert this status and become more reasonable, such as permitting more breaks.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Wahlman thinks that his colleagues are too lax about keeping the nuclear reactor in check, especially with the occasional accident that pops up because of its malfunctions. It reaches the point of haughtiness, where he finds out that tools have gone missing, the filtration system is malfunctioning, and the lights occasionally go out, with Wahlman thinking his colleagues are responsible instead of himself.
  • The Teetotaler: Wahlman is clean of any alcohol, preferring to drink hot cocoa.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: When Oliver is arrested, Wahlman becomes more relaxed in his maintenance and a more reasonable boss to his subordinates.

Oliver Dunn (Spoilers)

Role: N/A

  • Evil All Along: Oliver Dunn, the newest mechanic on Wahlman's team, is the saboteur who's been screwing with the reactor. When he's caught in Wahlman's stakeout and brought for interrogation, his dorm is sacked to uncover he's a closet Nazi and Klansman who's been in contact with the Ahnenerbe to destroy McMurdo Station.
  • The Mole: Oliver Dunn is a Nazi sympathizer and Ahnenerbe spy who infiltrated Wahlman's team as a mechanic and has been manufacturing nuclear reactor accidents to try killing the crew in McMurdo.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: As expected from a neo-Nazi and KKK member, Oliver betrayed the OAA because he hates "race traitors, mongrels, [and] Judeo-Bolshevik scum" who are destroying the United States by daring to humanize "subhumans and Negroes".
  • Put on a Prison Bus: When his connections to the Ahnenerbe are exposed, Oliver is arrested and taken by the CIA to Canada so that he can be imprisoned.

Lois Jones

Role: N/A

  • Beneath the Mask: As she begins her expedition with her team, Jones internally reflects on how tensions with Germany and Japan are skyrocketing, feeling a little concerned about the fate of the OAA's civilian scientists. She tries burying her thoughts by enjoying the landscapes, but that thought will always sit in the back of her mind.
  • Bold Explorer: Jones enjoys exploring untapped vistas in Antarctica, such as the snowy and lifeless McMurdo Dry Valleys, and she gets bored when she has to wait for a research expedition to start. To her, these sites contain a bounty of geological mysteries that can build on humanity's collective scientific knowledge and Jones' last event features her making a toast to her team, wishing for future adventures pushing the boundaries of the world.
  • Breaking the Glass Ceiling: Lois Jones is invited to the OAA, making her the first female student to study on Antarctica since 1959.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Many cliques in McMurdo reject her out of blatant misogyny, not wishing to have a "stocky" and "unwomanly" scientist in their ranks. She slowly subverts this status as everyone gets used to her presence and starts treating her more fairly.
  • New Meat: Jones is one of the newest scientists brought to the OAA and almost no one genuinely respects her because she's a woman. However, they do start warming up to her as she spends more time in McMurdo, with a couple of soldiers helping her set up an observatory and a mess hall accepting her in their ranks.

Edward Freeman

Role: N/A

  • Accidental Hero: When Camp Century's tunnel system collapses on everyone, Freeman saves another man's life by incidentally pulling him into his air pocket among the rubble. His superiors thank him for his heroism and recommend him for a Commendation Medal.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He's deeply concerned for his sister Anais' safety while she participates in the civil rights movement. When he hears that a protest got "rough" and she was knocked unconscious by KKK thugs, he requests clearance to leave Camp Century and return home, which is granted for his previous heroics.
  • Cool Big Bro: Zig-Zagged. He has a close relationship with one of younger sisters, Connie, who cheerfully greets him over the phone and is excited when he comes back home for a break. However, he has a strained relationship with his other sister, Anais, as she spends more time participating in civil rights protests than bonding with him. Still, Edward has affection for her and fears for her safety in the protests.
  • The Dutiful Son: The main reason he joined the army was to get the money needed to help his family's financial problems, especially for his mother. When Anais is sent to the hospital by KKK members and mounts the family with more medical bills, Edward dissuades his mother from getting another job, promising to bear the financial burden himself by going to McMurdo.
  • The Quiet One: He usually stays quiet to avoid attracting attention, which he thinks is a good skill in a place like Greenland, even if he has burning questions of why his first assignment in Camp Century is digging tunnels. This is downplayed as he gets more comfortable in his station and talks occasionally with his fellow soldiers.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: His storyline begins with him hearing a job opportunity to Greenland, which he eagerly accepts to escape his racist CO and get higher pay.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: After years of facing discrimination and seeing his sister assaulted by the Ku Klux Klan, Freeman gets an optimistic ending when he's invited by his former superiors to reenlist in the Army for a new assignment in Antarctica. It will be tough work there, but Edward is hopeful that it will get him the money to pay his family's debts and, with his sister recovering from the attack, he's assured that he can overcome the challenges.
  • Token Minority: Freeman is one of the few black soldiers who move to Greenland, earning him suspicious stares and condescension from his racist colleagues.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?:
    • Downplayed. After nearly dying in a cave-in, Freeman develops a fear of walking underground. While it's not to a crippling degree, he's notably tense as he walks around Camp Century after his recovery.
    • Freeman has a more straightforward hatred of hospitals, specifically hating the cold and sterile air, the buzz of medical equipment, and the dull breathing from the open rooms.

  • Bold Explorer: As the director of the Australian Antarctic Division, Law oversaw the establishment of the Mawson and Davis Antarctic stations and led expeditions that explored much of the coastline and interior of Antarctica.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Law goes virtually unmentioned until the OAA is dissolved and he's put in charge of Australia's Antarctic territories.

Antarctic Interior

    Antarctic Interior
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/anarchy_antarctica.png
In-Game Description Click to Show

  • All-Powerful Bystander: Whenever it is personified as the Exile, the continent apathetically watches over its inhabitants and their struggles to survive the cold.
  • Big Bad: The Antarctican wilderness is not a character in a traditional sense, but it is repeatedly personified as "the Exile" and proves to be the single greatest menace to everyone on the continent. No matter what flag they belong to, everyone suffers through the cold and cruel storms, which claims multiple lives. While there are human antagonists and political rivals, their threat level doesn't hold a candle to what the Exile poses.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Whenever the Exile is personified, it is portrayed as an unforgiving entity beyond any human understanding or morality. As far as it's concerned, everyone could perish on the continent and it would not care.
  • Death World: There's good reason why this is the least inhabited and explored continent on Earth, both in this timeline and ours. The region is simply too cold and dry for any person to survive there in the long-term and the natural wildlife itself struggles to inhabit the area. It is rugged and harsh, but nothing compared to the calculated brutality of many human-occupied lands in the TNO world.
  • Debug Room: Like the Anarchy Island in base TNO, the Antarctic Interior uses the same tag (ZZZ), which helps secretly run events in the background.
  • Nature Is Not Nice:
    • The Antarctic Interior is unique among the other anarchies for being completely natural. The extreme conditions here have rendered most of the continent a frozen desert with few signs of life and unviable for long-term human civilization. The only human activity so far has been recent and largely restricted to the coastline.
    • One of the most iconic landmarks in the Interior is the Great Rift, a sheet of unstable ice covered with sastrugi sharp enough to destroy a snowcat or a sled's runners. It also has massive crevasses that could swallow an entire convoy whole, if they're not careful. It's one of the most dangerous parts on the route to the South Pole and passing this sheet is one of the biggest challenges facing Leal's crew in Operación 90.
