Miko

    In General
  • Birthday Buddies: Himeko and Chikane were both born on October 1st, the first day of the Kannazuki, "the godless month," in the traditional Japanese lunar calendar. Hence, they're the Kannazuki no Miko reincarnated to defeat the Yamata no Orochi.
  • Dangerous 16th Birthday: The two miko gain their powers on their 16th birthday, the same day that Yamata no Orochi first manifests and begins its attempt to destroy the world.
  • First-Name Basis: The two call each other "Chikane-chan" and "Himeko," but Chikane instead uses "Kurusugawa-san" on Himeko when in front of others.
  • Godiva Hair: In every single of their nude scenes, their very long hair conveniently covers the naughty bits.
  • Hair-Contrast Duo: The cute and innocent solar miko Himeko has blonde hair while the dignified and extremist lunar miko Chikane has dark blue hair.
  • Light Feminine and Dark Feminine: The sweet, pure-hearted and naĆÆve solar miko Himeko is the Light Feminine to the lunar miko Chikane's solemn, elegant and brooding Dark Feminine.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: They're an equally feminine lesbian couple.
  • Miko: A variation; they aren't the typical kind of miko that serve a shrine. Himeko and Chikane are the reincarnations of two shaman girls who are continually reborn to summon a Humongous Mecha named Ame no Murakumo, fight off a Destroyer Deity and save the world.
  • Ms. Fanservice: They're shown undressed and/or get a Bathtub Scene at least Once per Episode.
  • Night and Day Duo: Chikane is associated with the moon and Himeko with the sun. The symbolism is further explored when Himeko, who believes herself to be an utterly ordinary girl, wonders what the School Idol Chikane sees in her. Chikane then states that, just like the moon only shines with the reflected light of the sun, so is Chikane inspired and motivated to "shine" in all things by her love for Himeko.
  • Official Couple: The story is built around the romance of the two miko.
  • Power Tattoo: Himeko has a solar symbol on her chest and Chikane has a lunar symbol on her back. These marks glow whenever they access their miko powers.
  • Reincarnation Romance: The solar and lunar mikos are repeatedly reincarnated to stop the Orochi from destroying the world and in every incarnation, the miko are lovers. The ending of the anime shows that Chikane reincarnated again to reunite with Himeko in the same timeline and in future installments, they reincarnate again to be with each other.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: One of the miko must kill the other as a sacrifice required to restore the destruction caused by the Orochi. However, they are finally able to be together after the Orochi is permanently destroyed and Chikane breaks the reincarnation loop to return to Himeko in the same timeline, and future installments where Chikane and Himeko are reincarnated again, this time without the Orochi present in the series, means they no longer have to deal with it or the ritual where they have to sacrifice the other.

Voiced by: Noriko Shitaya (JP), Stephanie Sheh (EN), Ana Lobo (Latin American Spanish)

The Solar Priestess. Himeko is a very shy, innocent 16-year-old girl. She has known Chikane for many years without knowing Chikane's affections towards her.

  • Amnesiac Lover: In the anime ending, Himeko has Chikane wiped from her memory after Chikane's existence is erased from the restored world. However, she can sense she's waiting for someone she loves to return.
  • Apologises a Lot: Because of her shyness and low self-esteem, she's constantly apologizing for small things. She even says sorry to a bush before she goes through it.
  • Bisexual Love Triangle: She is the object of affection for both the male Souma and the female Chikane, and she shows attraction towards both.
  • Break the Cutie: Poor Himeko is raped by Chikane and forced to kill her, even after realizing that she loves her.
  • Camera Fiend: A mild example, but she certainly likes to take photos very much. She notes that Chikane encouraged her in that hobby.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: She's attracted to her childhood friend Souma. However, her feelings for Chikane are stronger.
  • Color-Coded Eyes: She's a purple-eyed Reincarnation of a Miko destined to save the world from a Destroyer Deity.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: She's rather cute and can occasionally be clumsy. In one of her first scenes, Chikane saves her from falling down the steps to school.
  • Damsel in Distress: She's repeatedly put in danger so Chikane or Souma come to her rescue.
  • Devoted to You: Both Chikane and Souma are hopelessly devoted to Himeko, completely ignoring their fanclubs at the school and being determined to do anything to protect Himeko.
  • Does Not Like Spam: She hates mushrooms. She tries to be polite about eating them, but Otoha immediately picks up on Himeko's dislike of mushrooms, and serves mushrooms whenever she wants to get back at Himeko.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Chikane is madly in love with her.
  • Expy: Of Kurusu Shinjou from The Cross Triangle, a previous work of the author. Both have the same appearance and a Pseudo-Romantic Friendship with a black haired girl. The difference is that Kurusu ends up with Souma's Expy instead.
  • First Kiss: From Chikane.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Besides her solar theme, her golden hair represents her innocence and gentleness.
  • Heartwarming Orphan
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Her self-esteem is a abysmal.
  • Hime Cut: She's the reincarnation of a Miko. To show this, she has blunt bangs, cheek-length sidelocks, and thigh-length straight hair.
  • I Can't Believe a Guy Like You Would Notice Me: Himeko is positively puzzled about what Chikane sees in an "ordinary girl" like her.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: After Chikane rapes her and makes an apparent Faceā€“Heel Turn, Himeko is convinced that Chikane wouldn't do such horrible things without a reason and tries to reason with her. However, Chikane only reveals her intentions after Himeko is forced to kill her.
  • I'm Crying, but I Don't Know Why: After Chikane is erased from existence and everyone forgets about her, Himeko looks at pictures that used to be of her and Chikane, but now are only of her because of the Ret-Gone. She starts to cry and she does not know why.
  • I Will Wait for You: In the finale, Himeko promises Chikane she will wait for her to get reincarnated and return to her. The Stinger shows Chikane does eventually reincarnate and meets Himeko again.
  • Just Friends: With Souma and will always be this.
  • Kill the Ones You Love: She is forced to kill her beloved Chikane as part of Chikane's Batman Gambit.
  • Lady and Knight: Himeko is the mystical Solar Priestess, and Souma is the brave warrior who betrayed Orochi to do the right thing and protect her. Himeko chooses Chikane over him, but they still care about each other and Souma keeps protecting her.
  • Love Martyr: Even after Chikane betrays her, rapes her and joins Orochi, Himeko never stops loving her and refuses to believe Chikane would do that without a reason. It's true Chikane actually did all that so she could die in Himeko's place, but any other person would at least resent her for going that far.
  • Meaningful Name: Himeko means "princess child".
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She's horrified after she fatally stabs Chikane and even tries to kill herself, but Chikane stops her.
  • NaĆÆve Everygirl: She's an innocent, naive high school girl with low self-esteem.
  • Neko: Himeko's pure innocence and helplessness forms a stark contrast with Chikane, the mysterious and protective Aloof Dark-Haired Girl with hidden dark desires.
  • Nephewism: She was left under her uncle and aunt's care after her parents died. However, they abused her and left Himeko with several emotional traumas.
  • Nice Girl: Himeko is a soft-spoken and kindhearted individual at heart.
  • Nobody Touches the Hair: She has an extreme sensitiveness to anyone touching her hair as a result of abuse from her uncle and aunt in her childhood.
  • Oblivious to Love: Himeko simply doesn't realize Chikane is in love with her despite how obvious it is. It's partly justified due to Himeko's low self-esteem.
  • Only Friend: She's this to Chikane, even though it looks like she doesn't realize it. Himeko is the only person who can approach Chikane and get friendly with her while everyone else can only see Chikane like an idol they are too afraid to even talk to.
  • Ordinary High-School Student: A completely normal high-school student who in her 16th birthday finds out she's the reincarnation of the Solar Priestess destined to save the world from Orochi and ends up living in the mansion of the most popular girl in her school.
  • Prone to Tears: She's prone to cry as she's a sensitive and insecure Shrinking Violet.
  • Protectorate: Chikane and Souma do everything for the sake of protecting Himeko, although Chikane's methods get very... extreme.
  • Rape as Drama: Himeko is raped when Chikane figures that it is the only way she can make Himeko hate her enough to kill her, but it makes Himeko suffer much more than she does resent her attacker.
  • Shrinking Violet: She's very timid and suffers from serious lack of self-confidence.
  • Tareme Eyes: Himeko's big, round eyes emphasize her naivety and shyness and directly contrast Chikane's Tsurime Eyes.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The demure Girly Girl to Makoto's athletic Tomboy.
  • Tragic Keepsake: The pink clam shell necklace her dead father gave to her.
  • Twice Shy: With Souma.
  • Wistful Amnesia: Chikane is erased from existence by the final ritual to seal Orochi and restore the world, but swears that she 'will be reborn' to Himeko. Even though Himeko forgets Chikane, when she looks at pictures that used to be of her and Chikane, but now are only of her because of the erase, she starts crying without knowing why. She also rejects a Love Confession from Souma, because she knows that she's waiting for someone else, even though she can't remember who.
  • You Are Worth Hell: In the manga, Himeko joins Chikane in the shrine on the moon where the latter was supposed to be imprisoned in alone.
  • Yuri Fan: Her favourite manga is a yuri by Reiko.

    Chikane Himemiya
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chikane_himemiya.png
Voiced by: Ayako Kawasumi (JP), Michelle Ruff (EN), Analiz Sanchez (Latin American Spanish)

The Lunar Priestess. Chikane is a very commanding girl. She has a very noble and elegant aura, lives in a large mansion with many maids, and is considered to be of the highest standing at their school. However, she has been in love with Himeko since they first met.

  • Academic Athlete: She is said to excel both in academics and sports.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: In the manga, her hair is dark turquoise and she has brown eyes. In the anime, she still has blue hair, but now her Curtains Match the Window.
  • Adaptational Heroism: In the manga, Chikane is with the Orochi from the beginning; in the anime, she joins after seeing Souma kissing Himeko and Chikane recovers her Past-Life Memories. In the manga, Chikane doesn't reveal herself as the Lunar Priestess and the eighth head of Orochi until halfway through, when Chikane rapes Himeko; in the anime, the priestesses work together throughout until Chikane joins Orochi.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: She's tall, beautiful, graceful, imposing, extremely popular and has long dark blue hair.
  • Attractiveness Isolation: Chikane is the target of adoration of almost every student at her school, but they think she's so damn perfect that it isn't even worth it to think she might look at them. Lampshaded by a character, who says that "simply having the courage to directly ask (Chikane) out makes one a hero".
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Himeko is the only one who has ever treated Chikane like an approachable person instead of an idol to be admired from a distance. This is what guided Chikane to fall in love with Himeko.
  • Betty and Veronica: Himeko is torn between her feelings for Chikane and Souma throughout the anime. Chikane is the Veronica; the super popular, wealthy, unbelievably beautiful and talented School Idol apparently out of Himeko's league, past life lover, and lesbian suffering from Gayngst over wanting Himeko so badly. It gets deconstructed since Chikane is so chaotic that she pulls a fake Faceā€“Heel Turn after sexually assaulting Himeko in a crazy plan to die in her place yet Himeko stays in love with her and rejects Souma so she can wait for Chikane to reincarnate and return to her.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Chikane is a very polite and kindhearted person... as long as you're not a threat to her dear Himeko.
  • Bishie Sparkle: Has these during her tennis ball match with Souma.
  • Break Her Heart to Save Her: Her whole reason for making an apparent Faceā€“Heel Turn and raping Himeko. Chikane wants to make sure Himeko will hate her and kill her, so she can die in her place.
  • Broken Ace: Beautiful, smart, athletic, and popular, but tormented by her Gayngst and having murdered Himeko in their past lives and the necessity of one of them having to die again.
  • Chick Magnet: She's extremely popular among both genders and is the frequent target of love confessions.
  • Class Princess: Everyone at school worships Chikane like a princess because of her great beauty and many talents. Despite this, Chikane doesn't let her popularity go to her head, is very polite, and actively builds a friendship with her crush Himeko, not caring at all about their highly different social positions at school.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She is jealous of Souma's closeness to Himeko and him being more capable of protecting her in battle.
  • Crazy Enough to Work: Overall, her plan which involves raping Himeko, kill the Orochi Necks from within, emotionally torture Himeko and then 'blow up the world' will make anyone with sanity shake their head and refuse. But in the end, it worked to ensure Himeko's survival and Chikane dying for it.
  • Dark Action Girl: After her Faceā€“Heel Turn, she gets to use the dark Orochi powers combined with her natural prowess, turning her to a dark, yet effective combatant.
  • Death Glare: Chikane will gladly give one of these to anyone who tries to bully Himeko behind her back.
  • Declaration of Protection: She desires to protect Himeko.
  • Dogged Nice Girl: Ever since she met Himeko, Chikane has done anything possible to be by her side, even if Himeko feels uncomfortable about it because of Chikane's social status.
  • Dude, She's Like in a Coma: Chikane steals Himeko's first kiss while she is unconscious as a "birthday gift".
  • Elegant Classical Musician: She can play the piano and the violin, which is expected from an elegant and beautiful Ojou.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: She has her own fangirl club at school.
  • Expy: Of Kiraha Meiou from The Cross Triangle, a previous work of the author. Both have the same appearance and a Pseudo-Romantic Friendship with a blonde haired girl. The difference is that Kiraha and Kurusu end up as Just Friends, as Kurusu is straight.
  • Fake Defector: As it turns out, she only becomes The Eighth Neck of Orochi so she can destroy his support from within.
  • Gayngst: Her love for Himeko brings her great angst, as she thinks those feelings are wrong because they're both girls and Himeko already likes a guy. This is considered a legit despair factor to become a member of Orochi.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She awakens Orochi herself and manipulates Himeko into killing her, so she can defeat Orochi, die in Himeko's place, and break the reincarnation loop.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation
  • Humanizing Tears: In the finale, the normally dark and aloof Chikane, after her multitude of deliberate evil actions, was ready to be regarded as an evil bitch that got what she deserve, and most especially not love. Himeko manages to see through her deliberate attempt and knew her 'well-intention' in her extremism, and returned her love to her. And in instant, the aloof girl broke down in tears in realization that she did deserve love.
  • Indifferent Beauty: For her, being a School Idol that even the girls want is not a big deal.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Chikane is clearly aware of the depravities she had to go through in order to ensure Himeko's survival and thinks she does not deserve to be loved back by Himeko. Still, Himeko never stops loving Chikane and they affirm their mutual love despite the monstrous things Chikane has done.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Chikane is desperately in love with Himeko, but she hides her feelings because she thinks Himeko should be with Souma.
  • Lady of War: A rich and highly cultured girl who turns out to be a deadly and graceful combatant.
  • Love Makes You Evil: To the point of violating her beloved Himeko. However, this is all so that Himeko will be willing to kill her.
  • Matchmaker Crush: Chikane tries to pair Himeko up with Souma because she wants her to be happy.
  • Meaningful Name: Himemiya means "princess temple".
  • Mistaken for Romance: Many students, Himeko included, think Chikane and Souma are dating. In reality, there is nothing going on between them, and they are in fact love rivals for Himeko's affections.
  • Necessarily Evil: All her actions after her apparent Faceā€“Heel Turn are in order to get Himeko to hate her enough to kill her.
  • Ojou: She's the daughter of a rich and extremely influential family and lives in a Big Fancy House with many maids.
  • Outdoorsy Gal: She was fond of climbing trees as a child.
  • Peerless Love Interest: Chikane seems to be the perfect girl; beautiful, talented, the heiress of a prestigious family and the most popular girl at school. Even having the courage to propose to her elevates you above the other students. Himeko is absolutely smitten by her and believes that she's living the dream when (due to one thing and another) she begins living with her. Deconstructed ā€” crazy things happen and in the end, Chikane is revealed to be neither angel nor devil, just a girl the same age as Himeko. There's no such thing as a peerless lover.
  • Psycho Lesbian: She ends up raping Himeko and pulling a Faceā€“Heel Turn, but this is later revealed to be an act to fool the Orochi so she can destroy its support from within and manipulate Himeko into killing her. It's just the 'psycho' part that is an act, her lesbian traits are genuine, much to her distress.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: She has long dark blue hair and pure white skin and everyone sees her as the most beautiful girl in the school.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue to Souma's Red.
  • Ret-Gone: After defeating Orochi and restoring the world, Chikane's existence was erased from everyone's memories. However, in The Stinger, we see her and Himeko reunited at some unspecified time in the future.
  • School Idol: She's the most popular girl at school with a considerable fanbase following of both genders.
  • Screw Destiny: Combined with The Power of Love, Chikane manages to free herself and Himeko from the continual reincarnation loop of fighting against the Orochi and having one kill the other.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: She only has eyes for Himeko.
  • Spoiled Sweet: She lets Himeko stay at her mansion and makes sure to make her feel comfortable.
  • Strike Me Down: Chikane tries hard to manipulate Himeko into killing her because she doesn't want to have to kill Himeko again in order to restore the world.
  • Suicide for Others' Happiness: Chikane's scheme is a big suicidal gambit where she makes herself out to be as evil as she can be so Himeko kills her, all in order to escape from her fate of killing Himeko like in her previous life and make sure Himeko can live happily in a restored world where Chikane doesn't exist.
  • Tachi: She's a mysterious dark-haired beauty who pursues and protects the innocent and helpless Himeko. Attention is often drawn to the contrast between Chikane's desires and Himeko's virginal innocence.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Chikane's sharp eyes emphasize her imposing and prestigious image and are appropriately countered by Himeko's Tareme Eyes.
  • Upper-Class Equestrian: Chikane is a wealthy Ojou who is trained in horseback riding and has a horse named Saint Just.
  • Uptown Girl: A rich Ojou who has fallen in love with the middle-class girl Himeko.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Don't lay a finger on Himeko. Otherwise, Chikane will kick your sorry ass from here to Orion. Unless you have super power granted from a dark Destroyer Deity, then maybe you can kick her back... until she gets those dark super power as well, and she starts kicking you in return.
  • Visual Pun: Look carefully at her yellow headband and her dark blue hair. Here's a hint: view it sideways.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: After recalling having killed Himeko in her past life, she rapes Himeko, steals Souma's Orochi mech while making Miyako think that her Mind Rape works, then she kills the other Orochi Heads, and awakens Orochi herself. All this in order to get Himeko to kill her for the world rebirth ritual to be complete and to push her far enough to summon a god by herself since a memory of her old self implanted a hatred for said god in the back of her mind which prevented from being able to help.
  • Yandere: Her feelings for Himeko border upon obsession and eventually Chikane ends up forcing herself on Himeko to keep her from thinking about anything besides her. Subverted since Chikane only did it to force Himeko to hate her and kill her so that Himeko could live on and be happy.
  • Zero-Approval Gambit: Chikane was really prepared to be marked as a traitorous, rapist bitch and an Omnicidal Maniac Psycho Lesbian in the eyes of Himeko and then retconned out of existence in order to make sure Himeko survives.

Allies

    Souma Ogami
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/souma_oogami.png
Voiced by: Junji Majima (JP), Steve Staley (EN), Hector Mena (Latin American Spanish)

Himeko's childhood friend who is as popular at school as Chikane, which is why most of their fellow students believe he and Chikane are dating. He's supposed to be Orochi's Seventh Neck, but he was able to resist becoming completely evil and is the first Orochi to be purified. Like Chikane, he is in love with Himeko and is extremely protective of her. His mecha is Take no Yamikazuchi.

  • Amicable Exes: He and Himeko go on a few dates, but by the end of the series, especially post-Ret-Gone, she admits feeling that he isn't the one for her. He takes the rejection well and wishes her luck.
  • Armor-Piercing Question:
    • In Episode 5, when Chikane argues with him about protecting Himeko, she starts to assert that she'd be better at protecting her than he is. Souma then asks what Chikane can do herself, and why she doesn't revive Ame no Murakumo, since she'd already tried and failed. Chikane is left at a loss for words.
    • In the final episode, Souma insists that he's fine with sacrificing himself for Himeko despite the fact that Himeko doesn't return his feelings, then asks Tsubasa, who'd derided that sort of devotion, if he's the same. Tsubasa admits he has a point and decides to let Souma pursue his folly to the very end.
  • Badass Biker: He's often seen riding his motorcycle and goes into battle against the Orochi with his mecha many times
  • Betty and Veronica: Himeko is torn between her feelings for Souma and Chikane throughout the anime. Souma is the Betty; the childhood friend, Nice Guy, and heterosexual option who is clearly much safer than the alluring and conflicted reincarnated lover Chikane, especially after Chikane pretends to go evil and violates Himeko as part of a crazy plan to save her. In the end, Himeko chooses Chikane and Souma wishes them to be happy.
  • Bishie Sparkle: Seen during his tennis ball match with Chikane.
  • Cain and Abel: The Abel to Tsubasa's Cain.
  • The Champion: To Himeko. He resists Orochi's corruption so he can be Himeko's lone protector.
  • Chick Magnet: He's very popular among the girls of his school.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: He's Himeko's childhood friend who is in love with her. She's attracted to him too, but he's still no match to her love for Chikane.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His biological dad was physically abusive. His older brother Tsubasa ended up stabbing him to death to protect Souma.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He's a Neck of Orochi, sure, but that doesn't mean he isn't one of the good guys.
  • Declaration of Protection: He promises Himeko he will protect her.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: Is in love with his childhood friend Himeko and vowed to protect her, and even when Himeko chooses Chikane over him, he still supports her.
  • Expy: Of Ogami from The Cross Triangle, a previous work of the author. Both have the same appearance and want to protect a blonde haired girl.
  • Faustian Rebellion: As a member of the Orochi, he is granted powers by the evil god and the use of a Humongous Mecha that is a part of the god's physical form. However, he manages to resist the god's corruption and proceeds to use both against the other Orochi. However, the god is capable of punishing him for this, and does so, inflicting him with a curse that would encase his body in scales and eventually petrify him outright.
  • Happily Adopted: He was adopted by the Ogami family after Tsubasa killed their Abusive Parent.
  • Heroic RRoD: His Orochi-granted powers eventually petrify him, but Tsubasa saves him.
  • Heroic Willpower: Souma was able to resist The Corruption of the Orochi and remain good because his desire to protect the girl he loves from the other bad guys was just that strong.

  • Meaningful Name: Ogami means "great god".
  • Missing Mom: Soumaā€™s mother, has never been seen or mentioned, what happened to her and if sheā€™s alive or not.

  • The Un - Reveal: Soumaā€™s mother, has never been revealed.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red to Chikane's Blue.
  • The Rival: To Chikane.
  • Romantic False Lead: For most of the series, he acts as Himeko's potential love interest and Chikane's romantic rival. Of course, the series genre alone lets you know who Himeko is going to end up with.
  • Romantic Runner-Up: He's a very Nice Guy who truly wishes to protect Himeko and Himeko does show to have feelings for him too several times. Unfortunately for Souma, this is the wrong series to love his girl and Himeko and Chikane are clearly meant to be the Official Couple.
  • School Idol: He's as popular as Chikane at school.
  • Sixth Ranger: While Himeko and Chikane are trying to complete the Ame no Murakumo summoning ritual, Souma assists in the fights against the other Orochi Necks with his mecha.
  • Token Good Teammate: The only good Neck.
  • Twice Shy: With Himeko.
  • Weak, but Skilled: While skilled with his mecha, Souma isn't as strong as the other Neck's are with theirs, likely due to him rebelling against the Orochi, he defeated most of them by using his own skills, willpower from love for Himeko and the other Necks being surprised that he's rebelling and not familiar with his style. He was nearly defeated by Tsubasa and almost got killed by Chikane, both of them knowing how he fights, though he survived them.
  • You Monster!: He asks what kind of monster Chikane is after the latter rapes Himeko.

  • Pet the Dog: After he killed his father and gained extreme nihilism, he instead deposited Souma to Kazuki's household, stating that Souma should not get involved with his dangerous lifestyle and grow up normally within a loving household.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Has piercing red eyes and is the First Neck of the Orochi.
  • Sympathetic Murderer: He killed his abusive father to protect himself and Souma.
  • Troubled, but Cute: An attractive, but evil young man serving the Orochi.

    Sister Miyako
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sister_miyako.png
Voiced by: Ikue Otani (JP), Melissa Fahn (EN), Rosalinda Marquez (Latin American Spanish)

The Second Neck. She is a nun who is the first Orochi to appear and attack. Her mecha is Yatsu no Onokoshizuchi.

  • Aloof Big Sister: She's said to be Girochi's older sister, but no one would know otherwise because of her indifference towards him.
  • Ambiguously Brown: She has significantly darker skin than the rest of the cast, but there's nothing else that helps determine her ethnicity.
  • Bad Habits: She dresses as a nun, but she's really the servant of a God of Evil attempting to destroy the world.
  • Breaking Speech: She delivers a long speech to Chikane taunting her over her Gayngst.
  • Cleavage Window: She wears a nun costume with an opening showing off her cleavage.
  • Evil Stole My Faith: It's implied she lost her faith due to living through a terrible war.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: She's one of the villains in the series and wears glasses.
  • Giant Poofy Sleeves: Her nun costume has sleeves with puffs on the shoulders.
  • Hopeless Suitor: She's been in love with Tsubasa for who know how many years, but he barely acknowledges her existence, much less her feelings.
  • Idiot Hair: She has a strand of hair that sticks out on the top of her head.
  • Naughty Nuns: Her nun outfit exposes her cleavage and long legs.
  • Showgirl Skirt: The long skirt of her nun costume splits at the front so we can see her legs.

    Girochi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/girochi_kannazuki_no_miko.png
Voiced by: Yasuyuki Kase (JP), Kirk Thornton (EN), Julio Bernal (Latin American Spanish)

The Third Neck, he is one of the first Orochi to attack the miko. Girochi is said to be Miyako's younger brother. Presumably, the same war that destroyed his sister's church claimed the life of their parents and left Girochi traumatized and disillusioned. His mecha is Hi no Ashinazuchi, nicknamed Gungal.

  • Ambiguously Brown: Like his sister Miyako, he has dark skin although it's never revealed what their ethnicity is.
  • Badass Longcoat: He wears a gakuran with a long ragged coat, making him look tougher than the other Necks.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: His eyebrows are large and bushy.
  • The Brute
  • Chain Pain: He has large chains hanging from his arms which he uses as weapons.
  • Hypocrite: He calls out Chikane for her lusting over Himeko despite the fact that he was no less pervertd toward her.
  • Pointy Ears: He has prominent angular ears.
  • Scars Are Forever: He has a cross-shaped scar below his collarbone.
  • School Uniforms are the New Black: He always wears a ragged gakuran (Japanese boys' school uniform).
  • Villainous Crush: He is attracted to Himeko and wishes to go on a date with her, which only fuels Chikane's jealous protectiveness.

    Corona
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/corona_kannazuki_no_miko.png
Voiced by: Kana Ueda (JP), Rebecca Forstadt (EN), Iarel Verduzco (Latin American Spanish)

The Fourth Neck. She is a delusional pop idol whose dismal sales are partly responsible for her becoming one of the Orochi. Her mecha is Ooube no Senazuchi, nicknamed Final Stage.

  • A-Cup Angst: She didn't take it well when her fellow Necks compared that Chikane, fresh after her Faceā€“Heel Turn, had bigger boobs than her.
  • Berserk Button: She gets annoyed whenever someone, usually Reiko, brings up how she never made it past 68th on the idol rankings.
  • Butt-Monkey: Her overall delusion on her job made her an easy picking for fellow Necks to ridicule at, up and up including people mistaking her position at the idol charts, or having her boob size picked on (see A-Cup Angst). She's only second to Girochi in this terms, since at least she's not quite as much as a Dumb Muscle as him.
  • Evil Diva: Without the Mind Control Magic Music part. Corona is a pop idol who is part of a group trying to destroy the world out of bitterness of losing her fame and very severe issues she had before that. However, at the end Corona's life is retconned and she's able to be a successful Idol Singer without going for prostitution, presumably because either she managed to do things in another way, the fans are more appreciative to her, or she didn't meet questionable managers that forced her to do such thing.
  • Femme Fatalons: She's an Evil Diva with long, sharp orange nails.
  • Freudian Excuse: It's said Corona was "betrayed by her dreams" and it's all but stated that she suffered sexual abuse and tons of failure in her singing career (she's currently the 69th on the charts), quite possibly rendering her sexual abuse All for Nothing. This is what motivated her to become one of the Orochi and want to destroy the world.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She ties her hair up into twintails.
  • Idol Singer: She's a pop idol, but her decaying fame has motivated her to join the Orochi.
  • Improbable Weapon User: In personal combat, Corona throws lipsticks at her target. This attack is not as harmless as it might sound, since these lipsticks carry a kinetic charge capable of causing explosions.
  • Rape as Backstory: The flashback showing her Freudian Excuse heavily implies she was forced to prostitute herself to get her first big break in show business. And after her first break, she went down the ranking to the point of the 69th. Thus, her prostitution was rendered All for Nothing.

    Reiko Ota
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/reiko_ota.png
Voiced by: Mamiko Noto (JP), Dorothy Elias-Fahn (EN), Olga Patlan (Latin American Spanish)

The Fifth Neck. She is an antisocial manga artist of few words. Reiko continues her "day job" as a member of the Orochi and has in fact done better on the market since joining, though her manga have taken on very dark themes since then. Her mecha is Ho no Shuraizuchi.

  • Artist Disillusionment: In-Universe example. Her flashback scene refers to "Hurt by success", which implied that there was a time that her dream manga found success, but with the shift of audience tastes, Darker and Edgier manga sold more and her editors forced her to make the type of stories that didn't fit with her heart based on her past success.
  • Curtains Match the Window: She has auburn hair and eyes.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Anytime she speaks, it's usually snarking at either the current situation of her teammates. Especially Corona, who she always refer as her rank in the idol charts... one number bigger (69th, as opposed to 68th)
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: She's a bespectacled mangaka who is part of an evil group that works for a God of Evil so it can destroy the world.
  • The Pen Is Mightier: In personal combat, Reiko throws explosive fountain pens at her targets.
  • The Quiet One: She doesn't like to talk, and when she does it's usually very short.
  • Reclusive Artist: In-Universe example. She's a very antisocial and quiet manga artist and she barely interacts with the other Orochi.
  • The Stoic: She doesn't show much emotion and usually reacts in a deadpan manner.

    Nekoko
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nekoko.png
Voiced by: Ai Nonaka (JP), Sandy Fox (EN), Ellie Rojo (Latin American Spanish)

The Sixth Neck. She is a small Cat Girl who is often seen wearing a nurse's outfit and wielding a giant syringe. It is later revealed that she was the subject and victim of horrible medical experiments, which is most likely what made her an Orochi follower. Her mecha is Izuhara no Tamazuchi.

  • Blush Sticker: She has a permanent blush on her cheeks. They emphasize her cuteness.
  • Cat Girl: She lacks the ears to complete the image, but she does have the cat's tail, mannerisms and name of the trope.
  • Cute Is Evil: She's an adorable little Cat Girl dressed like a nurse, making it easy to forget she's one of the villains who are trying to destroy the world. One time, Nekoko went on a rampage which destroyed several Japanese landmarks, acting like a cute little girl having fun.
  • Expy: She's a cute small Cat Girl just like Taruto, the main character from Kaishaku's previous work, Magical Meow Meow Taruto.
  • Genki Girl: She's a cheerful and playful little girl.
  • Girl with Psycho Weapon: A cute little Cat Girl in a nurse's outfit who attacks with a giant syringe the size of her body.
  • I Call It "Vera": She nicknamed her Humongous Mecha as "Meow Meow" or "Nya Nya".
  • Meaningful Name: Her first name means "cat child".
  • The Medic: Nekoko's syringe contains some form of medication that can heal injuries and sickness, but the injection causes horrible pain, as noted by Girochi.
  • Playing with Syringes: The flackback to her past shows the terrified cat girl in a laboratory, strapped to a chair and about to be experimented on...
  • Token Mini-Moe: She's one of the Necks of Orochi, but she's also small and cutesy.
  • Verbal Tic: "~nya!"

Gods

    Ame no Murakumo
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/murakumo_kannazuki_no_miko.jpg
Voiced by: Atsuko Tanaka (JP), Megan Hollingshead (EN)

The god of swords. When Orochi rises, it is prophesied that only the god of swords will stand against it and be able to undo the damage that Orochi causes. However, Himeko and Chikane are unable to complete the Ame no Murakumo summoning ritual for some reason.

  • BFS: As to be expected of a sword god.
  • Humongous Mecha: Despite being a god of swords, Ame no Murakumo is actually a giant robot like the ones the Necks use.
  • Jerkass Gods: Ame no Murakumo stands for goodness and mankind's survival, but that didn't stop it from making up the rule to have the Mikos that revived her kill the other one to complete the ritual and undo the Orochi's damage to the world, uncaring about the anguish of the surviving Miko. No wonder that Chikane's predecessor was so pissed at the God and implanted her memories to the current Chikane to enable her to Screw Destiny.

    Yamata no Orochi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/orochi_kannazuki_no_miko.jpg
Voiced by: Rokurō Naya (JP)

The evil god the two miko must defeat to save the world. It acts through its eight followers, the Orochi, each of whom possesses a Humongous Mecha that is an aspect of the god itself.

  • Big Bad: It's the main source of evil, directly or indirectly, in the series.
  • Combining Mecha: Its true form is the combination of all eight mecha piloted by the Orochi.
  • God of Evil: It's a god who wants to replace the world of humanity with a place of darkness and nihilism.
  • Killed Off for Real: After the two mikos defeat it and pick one to kill the other in order to complete the ritual and undo the Orochi's evil from the world, the Orochi rises again in the next lifetime for the reincarnations of the mikos to repeat the process. But with the end of the anime and future installments, it's definitely gone for good this time around.
  • Spikes of Villainy: It has multiple giant spikes on the back, just to make the whole evil god thing even more obvious.

Other characters

    Otoha Kisaragi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/otoha_kisaragi.png
Voiced by: Chinami Nishimura (JP), Kate Higgins (EN), Vanessa Olea (Latin American Spanish)

Chikane's personal maid, who has a Subordinate Excuse-like crush on her.

  • Berserk Button: She tends to lose her temper at any indication that Chikane and Himeko are getting closer, such as yelling at two of her colleagues for gossiping about how Chikane and Himeko are like sisters with Otoha in earshot.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: While not evil, she's rather short-tempered, easily jealous and petty at heart despite her polite and servile facade.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: She has been in love with Chikane since she was a child. She always hoped to someday stand by her side, but all her life she only could watch her from afar.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Whenever she gets jealous of Himeko having all of Chikane's attention, Otoha gets back at Himeko by cooking the meals she knows Himeko doesn't like.
  • Hopeless Suitor: She has been in love with Chikane for a very long time, but she somehow always knew Chikane has been looking for someone who wasn't her.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Towards the end of the anime, she finally accepts that she isn't the girl Chikane has been waiting for and quietly resigns to Chikane and Himeko being fated to be together.
  • Meido: She works as a maid at Chikane's mansion.
  • Ojou Ringlets: Inverted. Her hair is styled into two large ringlets in front of her ears, but she's the servant of an Ojou instead of being one herself.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: The only reason why she's kept around for most of the series is to bring light-hearted moments with her Clingy Jealous Girl antics.
  • Satellite Character: Otoha is Chikane's Clingy Jealous Girl Meido and that's where her characterization ends.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: At episode 8, Chikane sends her away from the mansion under the pretense that her father needed her services, much to her chagrin. Chikane didn't want to involve Otoha in her crazy Zero-Approval Gambit which starts with her Faceā€“Heel Turn.
  • Sitcom Archnemesis: Her petty jealousy toward Himeko provides much of the comic relief of the early series.

    Makoto Saotome
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/makoto_saotome.png
Voiced by: Ikue Otani (JP), Julie Ann Taylor (EN), Azucena Miranda (Latin American Spanish)

Himeko's friend and roommate.

  • Boyish Short Hair: Her athletic and outgoing character goes well with her short hairstyle.
  • Genki Girl: She's a cheerful and energetic girl.
  • Get Out!: Downplayed, but when Himeko visits her in the hospital, Makoto becomes upset and asks her to leave, blaming her for her injuries.
  • Jerkass Realization: In Episode 9, she realizes she was wrong to blame Himeko and apologizes.
  • Ms. Exposition: In the first episode, she delivers expository info dump to let the viewer know just how much of a big deal the School Idol Chikane is.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: She's one of the best runners on the Ototachibana track team.
  • Satellite Character: She's defined through her interactions with Himeko and there's nothing noteworthy about her otherwise.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The athletic Tomboy to Himeko's demure Girly Girl.

    Izumi, Misaki and Kyoko
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/izumi_misaki_kyoko.jpg
Izumi is voiced by: Kiyomi Asai (JP), Megan Hollingshead (EN), Harumi Nishizawa (Latin American Spanish)
Misaki is voiced by: Kaori Mine (JP), Cristina Valenzuela (EN), Polly Huerta (Latin American Spanish)
Kyoko is voiced by: Yukiko Minami (JP), Mela Lee (EN), Irene Ponce (Latin American Spanish)

A group of girls who are Chikane's biggest fans at school. They are very jealous of Himeko and usually bully her as a result.

  • Alpha Bitch: Izumi appears to be the leader of the pack.
  • Blatant Lies: After Izumi tries to push Himeko down some stairs and Chikane catches her in the act, she claims that another girl was the culprit.
  • Fangirls: To Chikane.
  • Girl Posse: Misaki and Kyoko are Izumi's underlings.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Towards Himeko. They immediately take a dislike to her for getting to stay in the Himemiya house and calling Chikane by her first name.
  • No Full Name Given: Only one of their names are revealed.
