Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

  • Despero is one of the oldest enemies of the Justice League. Having murdered his father to take control of his world, Despero never recovered his pride after the League defeated him. Rebuilding himself into a savage beast, Despero invaded Earth, taking joy in slaughtering the humans he could while attempting to wipe out every living thing, returning multiple times to try again. Resuming his role as a multiversal conqueror, Despero has conquered dozens of worlds and destroyed many others, with billions dead to his name, even attempting to trick other aliens into annihilating earth out of sheer spite against the heroes he so loathes.
  • Shadowpact: Dr. Gotham was a warlock whose evil permeated into the city whose name he would adopt, poisoning it. Upon awakening. Gotham resumes worship of the monstrous Sun King and sacrifices his loyal minion Streega to him via giving her a deadly dose of cancer. Attempting to wipe out Chicago against Shadowpact, Gotham later has multiple women sacrificed to the Sun King, killing his clone and son when they break from one another before giving a multitude of souls to his master to consume the world.
  • Warlord: Deimos the tyrant was a slaver and warlord with a plot to take over all Skartaris. Keeping many in bondage, Deimos relied on technology to pass as magic, later attempting to wipe out New Atlantis with his weapons. Stealing the baby son of his archfoe Travis Morgan, Deimos artificially aged a clone he believed was the boy to a man with the mind of a child to have father and son kill one another. Returning in Convergence, Deimos takes the chance to gleefully try to murder all heroes while harnessing Brainiac's power, intent on tearing down reality to erase it and rebuild it in his own image.
  • Demon: The Fallen: Asmodeus, Archduke of the Silver Legion, joined Lucifer's rebellion for his own reasons, being a major architect behind the fall of the Great Experiment. Helping to sway Abaddon to darkness and assisting in the Time of Atrocities, Asmodeus was the one who ordered mass rapes to create the Nephilim and destroy Lucifer's dreams, returning as one of the Earthbound to dominate the world with his twisted experiments after being unleashed from Torment.
  • Punisher: Billy "The Beaut' Russo was a sociopathic hitman who helped arrange the deaths of the Castles and thought nothing of bombing a city block to get at a target. After his face was mutilated, Russo took the name Jigsaw, murdering innocents to frame the Punisher many times, leaving a massive trail of corpses behind him. Assisting Samuel Smith in trying to wipe out most of humanity, Jigsaw thinks nothing of murdering women and children, even abandoning his own son to die when it becomes a choice between his life and a few extra seconds to murder Frank Castle.
  • Age of Apocalypse
    • En Sabah Nur, Apocalypse, led a genocidal crusade that led to the deaths of most of the world's population. Establishing a nightmarish regime with regular cullings of millions of innocents, Apocalypse allows 'breeding pens' to produce humans for experiments and raw materials for his twisted scientists' experiments. Going against any truces, Apocalypse intends to nuke the world entire to leave a world where only the strong survive.
    • Holocaust, also known as Nemesis, is the son of Apocalypse. A sadistic savage who values nothing so much as murder, Holocaust leads the Four Horsemen and gleefully participates in the savage culls, slaughtering entire cities or even nations while savoring a chance to torture his victims when he can or sending them to be broken down and used as raw materials for new super soldiers. Planning a crusade beyond anything even his father wishes, Holocaust's fervent wish is to create a world where every living thing perishes.

BTW, here's what I'm thinking. For other 616 characters, let's group Dark Beast and Holocaust thusly:

  • Age of Apocalypse (originally):
    • Dark Beast is the Evil Doppelgänger of the kind-hearted Henry "Hank" McCoy". Initially the Bastard Understudy of Mr. Sinister, Dark Beast earned a reputation as a sadistic monster in Apocalypse's concentration camps for his cruel experiments which tortured and killed many, giving him the nickname of "Beast", which he liked enough to mutate himself to better fit the moniker. When Dark Beast was brought to the X-Men's world, he set about killing everyone the good Beast cared for and continued his monstrous experiments on innocents. With his most heinous actions being to create a machine that fed off Hank's lifeforce while keeping him in unspeakable agony, in addition to his experiments on children, Dark Beast eventually attempted to foster a war between the X-Men and S.H.I.E.L.D. When exposed and dying from experimenting on himself, Dark Beast attempted to initiate a bomb to take the X-Men with him simply out of spite.

Yep. I posted it yesterday:

  • Apocalypse: An ancient Egyptian who gained his powers from Celestial technology, En Sabah Nur, better known as Apocalypse, is one of the oldest—and evilest—mutants in existence. Believing that the strong must dominate the weak, Apocalypse aims to test humanity. Those who survive the process will be allowed to live as his servants, those who fail, die. Apocalypse has a history of granting powers to other unscrupulous individuals, transforming Nathaniel Essex into the mad geneticist Mister Sinister in exchange for Sinister agreeing to unleash a plague that would exterminate most of humanity, and empowering terrorist leader Moses Magnum, in exchange for the latter winnowing out the strong from the weak. His other crimes include infecting the infant Cable with Techno-Organic Virus, as well as turning Cable's clone, Stryfe, into the monster he is today; trying to force humanity to reduce its own population by ninety percent or face the wrath of another meta-plague; and effectively killing Stryfe by bodyjacking him. He later conducts experiments on test subjects to find a new body, and, seeing himself as a god, eventually destroys a civilization. Believing wholeheartedly that those he considers weak must be slain, Apocalypse is well deserving of his name.

That "He later conducts experiments on test subjects to find a new body, and, seeing himself as a god, eventually destroys a civilization." is relatively new, but still 616, right? I wanna make sure we don't have his Age or Askani crimes in his 616 entry.

Ok so now my writeup on Whippleton:

  • Tonight We Riot: Whippleton is the CEO of Whipple Co, and the despotic ruler of a island nation dominated by his corporation. As CEO, Whippleton subjects his workers to abysmal conditions; often forcing them to take more than one job with little pay. Any attempts at peaceful protest being violently put down by police and armed forces. When a revolution starts in response to Whippleton's brutality, Whippleton sics machines on the revolutionaries, declaring that their deaths will allow him to gain more profit from his shareholders. As the revolutionaries liberate their country from Whipple Co, they discover that Whippleton has been developing deadly inflammatory material and special toxic sludge for mass consumption; said toxic sludge turning anyone who consumes them into mindless mutants. When confronted at the top of Whipple Co, Whippleton declares himself to be superior to his workers simply because of his wealth and how he inherited his father's company, and that without him, no one will be able to create jobs and the economy would be ruined if he was overthrown.

I might not have a lot of free time pretty soon, so I should probably get those writeups done.

  • The Neverkind Saga: Y'golonac is the god of depravity and a cruel Great Old One with a love of violating others. Fully capable of understanding human thought and emotion, Y'golonac lures a depressed Leon Duvalier to his cult in order to eat away at his soul as he possesses him. Using Duvalier's body, he rapes, murders, and eats countless people while forcing his daughter Monica to watch, while also making her believe herself to be Duvalier's deceased wife Rachel in order to rape her himself. With the corpses, he keeps their heads in jars to scare Monica for fun. Luring Hardestadt Delac to his hideout in order to eat him, he later tries to make him say his name in order to break free from his prison and turn North America into his playground of chaos and violation. When Hardestadt refuses, he taunts him with the fact that Eliza had been raped by her husband, all while savoring his anger. As he departs, he teases Hardestadt that the latter might have been raped himself. Decades later, he is revealed to have mated with Helen Valentine, spawning a new batch of offspring hellbent on harnessing enough lust energy to free him from his prison, with the intent of personally murdering the revelers unwittingly responsible for his newfound freedom and everyone who stands in his way before attempting to claim the Earth as his own. A putrid, disgusting sadist, Y'golonac truly earns his nickname of "the Defiler".
  • Deadbeat at Dawn: Danny is the violent leader of the Ravens gang, and far worse than any of his rivals or his underlings. Introduced trying to rape Christy, the girlfriend of the rival Spiders gang leader Goose, Danny is shown to have no respect for women except as playthings, threatening his own girlfriend and beating her when she reveals herself to be pregnant. Once Goose quits, Danny orders his men to brutally slay him and Christy after uniting with the new leader. Eventually, he turns against the Spiders, having them gunned down so that he can have total, unchallenged control of the streets of the Wretched Hive, permitting drugs to be sold even to children, and making one final attempt on Goose along with Christy's sister, mortally wounding Goose in the process.

One more for tonight...

What's the work?

Arak: Son of Thunder is a fantasy series published by DC during the Swords and Sorceryh boom. Think a Conan-ish series based in the real world, with a hero named Arak, a Native American warrior adopted by Vikings, who goes across the ocean and ends up in Europe having adventures, with his eventual love interest Valda, the Iron Maiden, daughter of Charlemagne's legendary female knight Bradamante (and Charlemagne himself, most likely)...one issue brings us the only keeper of the series when the Pope is abducted: The Black Pope.

Who is the Black Pope?

When Pope Stephen II was elected, a challenger named Ursicinus was crowned and named an anti-pope. His followers were driven out and went underground, where they crown their own leader, living as albino, subterrannean tyrants, with the Black Pope being their ruler, plotting to take over Rome. This comes to pass in the annals of Arak when they invade the surface, with casualties to abduct Pope Hadrian so he may be murdered in an arena...the Black Pope? Has a big arena where captives are brutalized and killed for sport, and gladiators in their warriors fight. He plans to have Hadrian executed there.

Oh, and in a nasty touch, the way they reprodruce? The Black Pope has women abducted from the surface and turned into broodmares, raped to produce new warriors, which he gloats over viciously with a display of captives, who are all with child and looking very unhappy, as the Black Pope gloats about his plot to replace Hadrian, while either planning to have Valda killed or turned into a concubine...when Arak arrives, he forces them to go through trials (very unfair ones) of combat...and when they win? He orders them killed anyways....however, one abducted woman takes that moment to plant a sword in his back, ending t he reign of the Black Pope.

Mitigating Qualities?

He's the worst in Arak bar none. It's technically mainstream DC (Valda was transported into the future) but it's its own thing and he's the worst by far with the arena and the very explicitly shown sex slaves. I mean, this level of evil pretty much speaks for itself. No good points, either. He's a lasciviously evil tyrant who just hams up the wickedness and glories in it.

Conclusion?

An easy one.

While doing a bit of rereading of A Song of Ice and Fire I came across a quote that I think would would work well as a Complete Monster one for Joffrey, posting it to see if it gets approval here:

"They should all be put to the sword," Joffrey declared suddenly. "The Mallisters and Blackwoods and Brackens . . . all of them. They're traitors. I want them killed, Grandfather. I won't have any generous terms." The king turned to Grand Maester Pycelle. "And I want Robb Stark's head too. Write to Lord Frey and tell him. The king commands. I'm going to have it served to Sansa at my wedding feast."
