Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the new Complete Monster (CM) cleanup thread! This thread is where we clean up or cut already-existing entries.

If you're looking to add new entries, please see the approval thread.

IMPORTANT: Before you begin any discussions on this thread, please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List. Here, you'll find explanations of the criteria for the trope as well as our rules/procedures for approving and cutting candidates.

What goes through this thread?

    Examples
  • Cut requests. If you believe a CM has been approved and they do not count, this thread is where you propose their removal. To know how to go about this, please see the FAQ folder on the Administrivia page, where the process is explained in detail.
  • If we ever need to consider cutting multiple examples without individually reviewing them (e.g. if we discover widespread plagiarism with a particular troper's CMs), the initial discussion will be on this thread and we'll then escalate to the mod team (as described here) to get a formal consensus if we decide to recommend a mass cut.
  • If an entry was put on the wrong subpage/YMMV page, you may propose where they should be moved to.
  • Full rewrites of existing entries, including expansions, trims, and ground-up rewrites. If your rewrite is approved by the thread, feel free to add it to the drafts page so that other users can check grammar and the like before it is included with the rest of the weekly swaps.
  • If an entry on a work's YMMV page doesn't match the entry on the media subpage, you can bring it here to discuss which entry works better.

What does not go through this thread?

    Examples
  • New candidate proposals - as stated before, those are done on this thread.
  • Unapproved wicks - if a Troper encounters either of these kinds of wicks, they can be cut with no approval.
    • Any CM link on a non-YMMV page - as a YMMV trope, it should not be linked on those pages regardless of any cleanup effort. The only exception is if the wick is being used within the definition of another trope.
    • If an CM link on a YMMV page refers to an unapproved character. If it refers to an approved character on any such page, the wick can stay. On the other hand, if the unapproved character being linked to sounds like they might have promise (and you don't feel like checking it out for yourself), feel free to mention it on the approval thread - someone may already know why they don't count, or it could invite a brand new discussion!
  • Proposals for images, quotes, and videos of already-approved CMs - quotes and images are proposed on the approval thread, while videos can be uploaded normally as they are screened for approval by the moderation.
  • Crosswicking examples to YMMV pages - if an example has already been approved and added to the main page, you do not require any special permission to add the example to a work's YMMV page (assuming the work has a page already). If a YMMV page doesn't exist yet, then you can make it yourself, but either way, feel free to just add the example without asking.
  • Small changes to existing entries - these can simply be done on a Troper's own prerogative with no approval.
    • Spelling and grammar fixes.
    • Pothole changes.
    • Minor rewordings.
    • Spoiler tags.

While these changes do not require any kind of approval, it is requested that should you make any of these changes, you do one of the following:

  1. Make the same changes on the relevant Sandbox page, then add the Sandbox to the list at the bottom of the drafts page. This will add the Sandbox to the weekly swaps and ensure that the edits end up on the relevant locked page. If the Sandbox is already listed, then once you make the edits, your job is already done!
  2. If you don't know how the Sandboxes work or simply don't have the time to find it, then you can simply post on the thread about the changes you made. Someone else can then make the edit on the relevant Sandbox and add it to the weekly swaps.
  3. Alternatively, you can simply request that the change be made directly to the locked page on the Locked Pages thread. Members of this thread keep track of that one, so we will ensure that the changes are made in the Sandbox so that it doesn't get deleted during the next swap.

Again, these changes don't require any approval, but we prefer to keep the entries on the YMMV pages and the locked pages the same in order to avoid any miscommunication or errors between entries, so if you do make the change, we would greatly appreciate it if you could ensure the change is made on the locked page as well.

As a final note, we do not care what other sites have to say regarding whether or not a character counts. We have our own criteria and they have theirs for their CM equivalents; while they are similar, they are not exactly the same and should not be treated as such. Another site removing a character from their equivalent should not be a reason why a cut is proposed here, and if this is the case, it will likely lead to mod intervention.

Other than this, once again, welcome to the cleanup thread, and we look forward to your contributions!

Got Hermann's entry a bit tweaked, wondering if it can be added to drafts.

Old entry:

  • Complete Monster: The brutish Hermann is a former fighting dog who, in the wake of humanity's extinction, decides to kidnap a human child and start torturing him for days on end into submission. Dubbing the child "shit-boy" once he finally breaks from Hermann's tortures, Hermann continues torturing and starving the child for days on end out of nothing more than pleasure. Once the child dies, Hermann furiously targets Rover, Red, and Charlie, resolving to murder Red and turn Charlie and Rover into his new slaves in retribution. Even when confronted on his abusive past, Hermann points out he liked being a fighting dog and had no qualms with doing what his owners wanted, viciously attempting to murder everything in his way in the final battle.

New entry:

  • Complete Monster: The brutish Hermann is a former fighting dog who amassed a brutal kill streak by biting the throats out of his opponents. In the wake of humanity's extinction, Hermann kidnaps a human child before physically and mentally breaking him into submission during a long time span. Dubbing the child "shit-boy" once he fully succumbs to Hermann's abuse, the bulldog keeps the boy enslaved and further tortured for sheer pleasure, killing several chickens and having the child join him in the massacre during one farm raid. Said abuse results in the child unwittingly killing himself when Rover, Red and Charlie try to save him. Surviving his own apparent death, the vengeful Hermann tracks the trio for days before kidnapping Charlie and using him as a bait to lure his companions into a trap. With full intentions of making Rover and Charlie his new abused slaves, Hermann nearly kills Red by viciously biting off one of his legs. Despite his abusive past, Hermann admits that he liked being a fighting dog and had no qualms with doing what his owners wanted, seeking thrill in emulating the very worst of human atrocities on his own volition.

So here's some Final Fantasy Write Ups that I already posted on the Proposal Thread. I'll add them to the drafts next.

  • Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
    • Professor Hojo is as despicable and cruel a Mad Scientist as in the Original Continuity, if not more so. Responsible for countless human experiments, including the SOLDIER program whose members eventually degrade into Sephiroth's puppets, Hojo pushed Aerith's mother, Ifalna, to such an extent that the last Cetra died after escaping his lab. Undeterred, Hojo had her body recovered and dissected, rubbing this in Aerith's face years later when he captured her again, as well as suggesting his plan to forcefully breed her with SOLDIER members. Happily allowing Sephiroth to kill Shinra personnel and take Jenova's dormant body without interfering, Hojo would personally bring monsters to Costa Del Sol to merge with the Black Cloaks, endangering the whole town and once again trying to kidnap Aerith along with the rest of the party; insinuating he intended to have Tifa impregnated. He is also shown to have painfully branded Red XIII, fully knowing he is a sapient and sentient being. Determined to demonstrate to the world his genius, Hojo remains the franchise's gold standard for heartless scientists.
    • President Shinra is the leader of Midgar and the President of Shinra Electric Power Company, which powers Midgar with the Mako Energy from the planet's Lifestream, with Shinra uncaring of what will happen to the planet if the energy runs out. When AVALANCHE fights back against Shinra, he has his men destroy Mako Reactors 1 and 5, endangering many lives while framing AVALANCHE for the crimes. In order to get rid of AVALANCHE for good, Shinra orders Sector 7 to be destroyed, resulting in the deaths of many innocent lives, while framing AVALANCHE and accusing them of being allies for Wutai in order to have a excuse to go to war with them. After Aerith is captured by the Turks, Shinra plans on using her to lead him to the "Promised Land," while also allowing Hojo's plan on having Aerith raped by SOLDIERS in order for her to reproduce to "mitigate the risks". Afterwards, he plans on abandoning Midgar and its people and then building a new Midgar in the "Promised Land" with unlimited Mako Energy for him to rule. After the party leave Midgar, they see the scars of war from Shinra's destruction of the Republic of Junon, with the company bulding the city of Junon over "Under Junon", blotting out their sunlight, and building the Undersea Reactor, poisoning their waters and fish. It is also revealed prior to his death that President Shinra was conspiring with "Glen Lodbrok" - in truth Sephiroth having stolen the late Glen's identity - to trigger a war with Wutai. A cruel and vile businessman who believes that truth, justice, honor, and freedom are "vain indulgences", President Shinra will gladly kill anyone in order to achieve his own personal desires.
    • Don Corneo, the lord of Wall Market, is a ruthless Mafioso fully on board with Shinra's plan to bomb Sector 7 to oblivion with the promise of a new and improved Wall Market to reign over, and has no compunction calling himself a "villain". A sickening pervert, Corneo is known for claiming nightly brides, from willing and unwilling women alike, passing others to his men to be "enjoyed" by them. Once he is done, the women are fed to his monstrous pet Abzu, a pattern that continues for a very long time, with not even the loved ones of his own subordinates safe. Further, Corneo is a particularly cruel Loan Shark, targeting vulnerable individuals and giving out loans in exchange to shipping them off to be experimented on by Shinra.

So this was asked a while back and nothing came of it, so I'll ask again: since the Fan Works page is getting too big again, should we split off Harry Potter and Naruto into their own pages?

For Shinra, would Corrupt Corporate Executive work better for his name? And maybe "is the founder and head of..." instead of "is the President of..."?

Cool.

Hojo before Shinra?

Also, this might've been discussed, but from Shinra's character page:

  • Even Evil Has Standards: Implied. Following Professor Hojo's suggestion that they forcibly impregnate Aerith and turn her into their own Breeding Slave, he quickly adjourns the meeting and refuses to discuss the matter any further. It's probably the only example of him possibly displaying any kind of morality in the entire game, and even then it's quite questionable...

[up] He allows Hojo to do it anyway with no regrets. In his own words, he takes advantage of what he can use, dispose of those who don't, and that there is no room for sentiment or guilt for him.

Plus, in comparison to the other people in the room, he has actually one of the calmest reactions. Some of them, such as Scarlet and Heidegger, move their chairs away and look very uncomfortable with Hojo's suggestion.

Okay as I brought up on the other thread, in light of my recent candidates from New Tricks going up, I figured it was best to open the discussion into whether anyone felt that Alex Close needed to be cut.

Now Close themselves is pretty loathsome, being both a corrupt businessman who's cleaning companies function through him overworking and exploiting illegal immigrants who live in fear of him, as well as a vicious sadistic Serial Rapist who stalks and forcibly rapes his victims. However, the thing is Close is only confirmed to have three victims (its strongly implied his actual count is higher, but no names or numbers are suggested).

He went up due to the fact that overall Sex crimes are pretty rare within the series. Their being only one other Serial Rapist of his sort ever investigated by the team (who is worse due to also being a torturer and a Serial Killer but doesn't count due last minute redeeming traits). There is also one other date rapist with a similar victim count, but due to redeeming traits (namely they seem legitimately horrified to discover the team also think they also flat poisoned a woman, who was actually killed by someone else. Making it clear their no killer) and another statutory rapist with three victims (who also doesn't count due loving their wife).

However, in light of the approval of Doctor Caldwell (a prolific paedophile confirmed to have raped dozens of girls in his care) and Ogilvy and Fraser (who were key members of a sex trafficking ring involving vulnerable teenagers and confirmed to have raped them themselves multiple times), the question is if the sentiment feels that they overshadowed Close to much?

Or due to their different circumstances, his other crimes and how rare sex crimes are (apart from the candidates there are about three or four of one time rapists in the entire show, one of whom its implied might have more victims but never elaborated on), it was felt he could also stand out?

What do you think?

How is the illegal immigrant exploitation played? I think that might push him over even if the rapes don’t.

Well its not given to much focus, but what we see is pretty nasty. Its established he has a long history of it (he originally fled to Poland in the first place cause he was caught exploiting illegal immigrants and its implied his latest company is composed of people he personally had smuggled so he could make them work for him), and he's quite exploitative, such as forcing only three people to work all night to clean an entire factory to ensure him the largest profits, as well as keeping them isolated and afraid so he an keep exploiting them.

There is admittedly two other criminals in the series who also exploit illegal immigrants. The first also apparently uses them for labour, but their operation is entirely offscreen. The second uses Eastern European women to run a dating scam (no sex involved, that being one of the rules) where they seduce wealthy men, then once their convinced they love them trick them into giving them money under the pretence its to help their relatives move to the UK, then he pockets the money and moves the girls onto a new mark.

So in that regard Close is the worst.

Yeah, from what I recall, Shinra was more just wanting to move on than actually having standards. His reaction is a cold shrug at most, puffing on his cigar. Hell, he even said before hand he didn't want Aerith to die like Ifalna. If he had any issues with Hojo's plan, it was that it might harm her and derail his plans. And yes, I'd put Hojo first. He's not only still active he's responsible for so much of the bad stuff the Shinra Company has done.

Ah yes, I came here today if anyone wants me to discuss Hollander from Crisis Core? I think he still keeps... in the original continuity. In the Remake Continuity I think Hojo is so much worse even with less resources Hollander falls flat.

I'm mostly good for Hermann's expansion but I'm a little wary about including the chicken farm attack, given IIRC the chickens aren't depicted with the same sentience the dogs have. What would probably be worth an addition is the detail Hermann makes "shit-boy" lick his...er, rear end clean, which is maybe the most nauseating crime Ennis has. ever come up with

[tup]To Hermann's rewrite.

Keep Close.

I read The Pirates Covered in Fur a little ago and there are a couple crimes of Captain Krinkor that I feel may warrant a mention on his write-up:

  • Current: Captain Lyle Krinkor is the vicious captain of the wolf pirates who seeks to destroy Diamond City in order to make his own empire for him to be worshipped. Krinkor begins the story by massacring the residents of an island in order to gain access to a super weapon, an indestructible robot dragon; Krinkor proceeds to use said dragon to invade Diamond city while ordering his crew to Rape, Pillage, and Burn all they can, causing mass swaths of death and destruction whilst Lyle keeps survivors as hostages. Later, Lyle instructs his crew member Marcus to blow up the bridge so as to trap the civilians in the city. Krinkor proceeds to murder several of Michum's friends, taking a sadistic pleasure in his actions. When the heroes storm the hotel he's keeping the hostages at, Krinkor instructs Pryllic to kill the rest of the hostages, having him kill several before the heroes save them. In his final confrontation with Michum and Tully, Lyle beheads Pryllic for failing him, mortally wounds Tully, and taunts Michum over the loss of his friends.

  • Proposed Expansion: Captain Lyle Krinkor is the vicious captain of the wolf pirates who seeks to destroy Diamond City in order to make his own empire for him to be worshipped. Krinkor starts the story by massacring the residents of an island in order to gain access to a super weapon, an indestructible robot dragon; Krinkor proceeds to use said dragon to invade Diamond city while ordering his crew to Rape, Pillage, and Burn all they can, causing mass swaths of death and destruction whilst Lyle keeps survivors as enslaved hostages. Not sparing even children from his atrocities, at one point Lyle tries to force a bus driver to give him children to rape. Later, Lyle instructs his crew member Marcus to blow up the bridge so as to trap the civilians in the city while having the dragon kill dozens of people trying to evacuate. Krinkor proceeds to murder several of Michum's friends, taking a sadistic pleasure in his actions. When the heroes storm the hotel he's keeping the hostages at, Krinkor instructs Pryllic to kill the rest of the hostages, having him kill several before the heroes save them.
