Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Is this a good example for The Ghost and Molly McGee?

  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: In "Out of House and Home", Irving the Illusionist showing up at the McGees door offering to clean the gutters is what leads to Pete getting injured, the McGees hustling to pay his medical bills, and forgetting to pay the mortgage which results in their house being repossessed and being forced to live Off the Grid.

I still haven’t gotten answers to some questions I asked earlier today: 1) From Characters.Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur 2023: Adaptational Early Appearance: Aftershock was introduced under the Marvel Comics 2 titles, which is set a possible future of the main comics universe. This show takes place in the present. I don’t know if this counts, since MC 2 was an alternate universe.

2) So there is a movie coming out next month about the creation of Tetris and the battle to get it exported out of russia. It is, itself, called Tetris (2023). Would it qualify as a video game movie?

I originally posted this in ATT, but it's probably better suited here.

So Failure Hero is a trope about these heroes who never win or accomplish their goals, either because they're comedy protagonists, less important than other characters, or just in that kind of story where their losses form a key part of the plot. Its notable and trustworthy because it's so very unusual for heroes to receive this treatment, even in comedy works.

However, I've seen some villainous examples on the page and I wonder if they actually count. Villains losing is much less rare, and villain that always loses can be covered by other tropes. So should those sorts of examples be allowed, or are they by their very nature just not this trope?

Bestiality Is Depraved mentions under one of the Family Guy examples that Stewie has made some sexual advances on Brian before, though most of these instances have not been commented on further.

I don't think this is an example since Stewie is a baby and human infants have no sexual attraction, much less to animals, and we usually don't include examples of characters below 13 as the perpetrators of sexual, predatory, or abuse-related tropes since they are kids themselves and (supposedly?) can't create a power dynamic with any character without having been abused themselves (whereas a teen or adult character knows what they are doing), and such cases are usually documented under Troubling Unchildlike Behavior.

....unless the Most Writers Are Adults rule makes an exception here, since Stewie is portrayed as a precocious Enfant Terrible.

This just got added to Recap.Miraculous Ladybug S 03 E 24 Ladybug:

  • Refuge in Audacity: It cannot be understated that Lila absolved Marinette from the punishment for her lies by admitting she has a condition that makes her a compulsive liar. Yet people not only continue to trust her but even feel sorry for her.

We're not sure this is an example of the trope here... the example text doesn't seem to be describing "get away with the thing because of how audacious it is that people can't handle it".

Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing.

[up] I'm not seeing it either.

[up][up] Since Brian is usually treated as a person, without knowing any more details, I'd say no.

[up][up][up] Since this is more of a general question about a trope definition rather than specific examples, it would probably be more suited to Trope Talk.

[up][up][up][up] 1) Adaptational Early Appearance is about how early in the work the character appears, not changes to the setting of a story. So as described, that example would not count.

2) Video Game Movies says it's for "Movies adapted from video games." From the work description of Tetris (2023), it sounds like it'd fit Video Game Stories instead (works about in-universe video games).

[up][up][up][up][up] From what I can tell, that seems fine.

Found these in Blue Is Heroic.

    A total of seven
  • Code Geass: Colorless Memories: Rai has blue eyes, his Knightmare is colored blue, he wears a blue pilot suit and is actually referred to as Zero's Blue Knight In-Universe. He is often cool, calm, and intellectual in his personality. and his contractor E.E has blue hair. (this one is commented out)
  • In What You Already Know, after Daniel Jackson acquires psychic abilities and the alias of ‘Dan’Yar’ among the Jaffa, he occasionally visits the Jaffa wearing his blue robes from Vis Uban, as the blue looks dramatic and it distinguishes him from his colleagues in the SGC.
  • Adventures In Zambezia: The main character, Kai, is a Peregrine Falcon with blue feathers, a trait he inherited from his dead mother. (this one is commented out)
  • Rodney Copperbottom in Robots has a blue color scheme and serves as the main protagonist and hero.
  • The heroic god Vishnu and his avatars from Hindu Mythology are blue-skinned.
  • The Virgin Mary, Mother of God and a highly revered figure in Catholicism, is typically seen in blue in apparitions. Our Lady of Lourdes (1858) appeared to Bernadette wearing a simple gown and mantle of white with a blue sash. Our Lady of Guadalupe (1531) appeared to Juan Diego wearing a gown of rose and a mantle of blue with gold stars. Our Lady of Pontmain (1871) had a loose-fitting dark blue dress with no sash and gold stars. Blue has been a color associated with royalty, peace, and nature.
    • Averted with Our Lady of Fatima (1917) who appeared to the children wearing a gown and mantle of white with gold trim. The crown often seen in her iconography was added to her statues and paintings after the fact. Lucia said the only ornament she ever seemed to have were small dazzling earrings.
All seven entries don't indicate how the characters in question are heroic (Do they uphold the law? Fight bad guys? Protect the innocent?). Blue Is Heroic is located in the "Cleanup" folder of Wick Cleaning Projects. Cut away?

[up]I'd cut all them sans the first two and the last one because part of Blue Is Heroic involves a character consistently wearing blue. The examples I didn't suggest cutting, however, should be hidden because they lack the "Heroic" context. (I know the first already is, though.)

Nah, that was funny!

More Never a Self-Made Woman issues:

  • Harry Potter:
    • The seven known burn marks on the House of Black's family tapestry fit this trope. The four males were stricken from the family tree for various reasons, the three females were all stricken from it because of whom they married (a Muggle, a Weasley, and a Muggleborn, respectively).

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet has a meta Fridge Horror example regarding the box legendary being stuck in the game and unable to be transferred to future games. Should this be allowed? I feel like it shouldn't, similar to how Moments pages don't allow meta examples. Especially since story-wise, the Pokemon is not trapped and is still able to have adventures with its trainer.

So, is the "force feeding" part in Mouth To Mouth Force Feeding just for decoration? These examples are misused because the characters willingly swallow the substance they're being fed or don't mind. Should I cut them?

  • Princess Mononoke: After Ashitaka is injured to the point of almost being unable to move, San tries to feed him some dried meat so that he can regain his strength but, even then, he's too weak. This leads an annoyed San to chew the food and feed it to him mouth-to-mouth in one of the more tender moments in a brutal story. Possibly justified in that San was literally Raised by Wolves and this might be the only way she can understand to do this kind of thing without any notion of the significance of mouth-to-mouth contact between humans. — He wasn't forced to eat it, she did it so he'd survive. Here's the clip (ignore the gross title).
  • In the 2013 film adaptation of The Great Gatsby, Catherine forces Nick to take one of her "nerve pills" at Tom and Myrtle's party by planting it in his mouth via a Forceful Kiss, then making him drink to swallow it. — It doesn't look forceful to me? It looks like he doesn't mind the kiss even tho he refused to take the pills.

On Trans Audience Interpretation:

  • Family Guy: A common fan theory is that Meg is a closeted trans guy, and that she’ll eventually transition as the series goes on. The main piece of evidence is that in the TV movie, Stewie Griffin, the Untold Story, Stewie and Brian travel to the future and see that Meg is now “Ron.” When the show was first being conceived, Seth MacFarlane, as well as some of the show’s other writers, didn’t want the Griffins to have a daughter, since they’re not good at writing female characters. Of course that happened anyway due to Executive Meddling. Her current portrayal in the show is often criticized for being nothing more than a Butt-Monkey, so it’s possible that they might try to fix this issue by having her transition into a man.

From what I understand through osmosis, this means Meg/Ron is a trans man in one canon future, so it's not really audience interpretation then, right? Or does it still count because the show doesn't really have continuity and have probably shown other contradictory futures, so fans latching onto this one is thusly still YMMV?

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

[up] As written, it doesn't qualify because if it's there in the canon, it's beyond audience reading. But if this speculation predated the movie, it would count.

There's an entry on The Voice that seems to be someone confusing the title of a trope for the trope itself (it goes back to before the page's history starts):

  • Worth mentioning is the Metatron from Dogma, who's nominally the Voice of God (and referred to by one character simply as "The Voice"), but shows up in the bodily form of Alan Rickman for several scenes in the movie.

Permission to cut?

From RealWomenDontWearDresses.Anime And Manga:

  • Pre-Eclipse Casca of Berserk is an Action Girl (the only girl, and second-in-command of the Band of the Hawk) with only one scene where she's out of her armor (at a ball, where her companions see her in a dress for the first time and can only stare at this perversion of everything they know to be true). Post-Eclipse, she's reduced to the level of a two-year-old and wears a peasant dress for practical reasons.

This trope require at least two female characters to work. This example only mentions one. The fact the she don't object to wear dresses Pre and even Post-Eclipse make me think that this example doesn't count.
