Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Not sure if this in Characters.Dumbing Of Age counts as a proper example of the trope or just being plain Put on a Bus since the guy's a villain:

For the new The Owl House episode page, The Owl House S3E2 "For the Future", someone wrote this:

I personally think it's a bit of a stretch, a fan complaining about the show being cut short, that Miki, (which actually get's pronounced as Meek-ee) was more likely just meant to be an Atrocious Alias, since it's literally just one letter off her usual nickname of "Kiki", and she was established as a jerk long before the season was shortened.

What does everyone else think?

[up]I know some of the Owl House would fine anything to Blame Disney for cutting the show short. I also don't know if Disney exac force any change to the show content. Especially when your two Protagonist are an LGBTQ couple. I'm learning on cutting.

On the Trivia Page for the Incredible Hulk (2008), one of the tropes is Outdated by Canon because of the fact that the novel states that the guy with the pizza slice in the lab is Amadeus Cho but it was stated years later that it was actually a younger Mr. Harrington from the Marvel Spider-Man films. However, Outdated by Canon is specifically for Fanfics. Is there another tropes we could use to replace it like Canon Discontinuity or something?

On YMMV.Fire Emblem Engage

  • Fandom Rivalry: With the previous entry, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, evident in both fans and professional reviewers. Engage is noted to fall on the opposite end of the Story to Gameplay Ratio. Those who enjoyed the Monastery, story, and characters of Three Houses won't find as much of what they loved here, while those who were disappointed with the strategic gameplay of Three Houses tend to consider Engage a return to form in that respect. Story- and character-wise, Engage is considerably Lighter and Softer while Three Houses is one of the Darkest and Edgiest games in the series, which its fans won't appreciate in terms of the former but is welcomed by those who found Three Houses Too Bleak, Stopped Caring, or are tired of Story Branching.
According to Synchronicity, "Intra-fandom disagreements don't count, see SquarePegRoundTrope.E To K"

Would this be alright?

[up] They're separate continuities of a meta-franchise, with different development staff and philosophies. Fire Emblem in particular is more like a collection of separate stories and worlds with their own continuities under the same brand banner. Contested Sequel probably wouldn't apply to the two because Engage and Three Houses exist in completely separate timelines, especially since Engage was not developed with the intent of being a sequel to Three Houses but rather as a Milestone Celebration Gaiden Game released alongside it (at least until COVID forced them to delay it). What would count as Contested Sequel is Three Hopes, which is in the same general continuity as Three Houses despite being an AU of it.

And I do think rivalries between the fandoms of separate continuities within a meta-fandom not only do count but are probably among the most common types of them. For example, infamously Gundam UC fans and Gundam Wing fans mixed like oil and water due to the extreme differences in the two takes on the same general concept. Likewise fans of The Last Jedi do not get along with fans of The Force Awakens or many other Star Wars entries.

IIRC, Synchronicity's comment was about Friendly Fandoms, and the examples that prompted it were two Star Wars entries that were in continuity with each other. In that case Friendly Fandoms would be a given because they were literally the same fans following the same story play out. It's like calling fans of the first and second Captain America films Friendly Fandoms, when sure there are some people who only watched one of those two films or who prefer one while being indifferent to the other due to the films having different directors, but they're still two parts of the same story so it's enough of a given that there's going to be significant fan carryover between the two. Now if the two fans were at each other throats, that'd be notable, because fandom rivalries tend to be a lot more empirically notable and thus worth recording.

With the recent addition of the Mimic Species trope, there are several examples that are currently in Chest Monster that I feel would fit better in Mimic Species:

  • The Cabbage Frog in The Discworld Almanack is a frog that grows large flaps of skin that resemble cabbage leaves, and then waits for butterflies to try to lay eggs on it.
  • After Man: A Zoology of the Future:
    • The oakleaf toad is this trope for smaller invertebrate-eating animals. Camouflaged by the leaf-like appearance of its body, it lures in prey such as shrews or small birds with its tongue, which resembles an earthworm.
    • The flower-faced potoo and the flooer (a flightless bat) both have faces resembling flowers, which they use to attract pollinating insects to eat.
  • In The Future is Wild, the Spitfire Beetle is this to a Spitfire Bird. The bird normally goes to a certain flower to stock up on chemicals for its Super Spit. Four Spitfire Beetles work together to form a fake flower, attracting the bird, which they all jump on and take down.

What do you think? Should they be moved?

[up](x8) That seems spiteful enough to count as Put on a Bus to Hell to me rather than plain ol' Put on a Bus.

[up](x7) Dumbing of Age.

[up](x4) From what I can gather, Outdated by Canon actually involves fanworks. Regardless, it doesn't cover that so I feel it's a cut for not being an example.

[up]Assuming said Bad Mood Retreat is due to sadness, I I'm leaning on saying that counts as Bathroom Stall of Angst. Though, how come you're able to know the character goes to a bathroom stall if the work doesn't reveal anything about it?

[up] - We never see the inside of the bathroom, we just know that the girls lock themselves inside the bathroom because Bad Mood Retreat, and I wanted confirmation them interacting with the stalls themselves was unneeded.

On YMMV.Hogwarts Legacy:

  • No Such Thing as Bad Publicity: Before the game even hit release, several news outlets and influencers made multiple attempts to start a boycott of the game due to the controversies surrounding J. K. Rowling. These had the opposite effect than intended, causing sales to skyrocket, eventually coming to sit at the top of multiple sales charts a month out from release.

Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment concerns aside. Does this really count? I feel regardless of any attempts at a boycott, I think it's pretty well established on here that Harry Potter is a large and powerful enough IP to not be readily affected by Rowling’s views. I don't see how the attempts at boycotting or banning the game or what not would impact sales in either direction and there doesn't seem to be any direct correlation between the high sales and the boycotts from what I can tell.

I feel the game would've done well in sales regardless due to Harry Potter being a beloved Cash-Cow Franchise.

It'd "count" as-written, the problem is if it's even true, which without a citation I'd think is not and can be removed until someone explains the relation.

[up][up]I'm unsure. On one hand, the controversy surrounding her is very much a thing (EDIT: granted I don't know exactly when she became controversial) and from what I know the game has some infamy. On the other, HP is a large brand so it being successful isn't surprising with or without the influences and news outlets.

Rowling has been controversial for years now. If her image is affecting the franchise, in either direction, it'd have been more than just this one game.

There is additional controversy about this specific game, because of course there is, but if someone wants to argue what effect that had they'll have to argue what effect that had.

Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing.

IIRC, the controversy is about the goblins, right? I've hardly heard it be discussed (in my circles anyway), but more to the point, yeah... I'm unconvinced that the controversy would've had any impact on the game.
