Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

I have to thank you Ayumi-chan because you JUST reminded me of an example I have always wanted to add and its prime time I did it since it seems the "Blind Idiot" Translation will go through TRS.

  • When Ben 10 was dubbed into Latin American Spanish one particular Omnitrix Alien got a REALLY literal name change due to a translation mistake. XLR 8 (Read as "Accelerate") got renamed into... XLR 8 (Now literally read in Spanish as Equis Ele Erre Ocho) and it stuck that way. Until the reboot which named it Acelerador (a more true to the original intent name) which fans of the old decried.

I want to know if this entry could be used for either "Blind Idiot" Translation, Good Bad Translation. And even Lost In Translation as well but more modified to fit that trope.

From Uncertain Audience

This reads like stealth praise of bebop and im not sure we can say a show as popular and acclaimed as it had an uncertain audience

Is it possible to have a Noodle Incident or series of Noodle Implements where the event/purpose of the objects is never explained to one of the characters in the work, but the viewer of the work knows what happened/what the stuff is for?

Example:

  • Penny Saves Paldea: Juliana bemoans that she owes someone 20 thousand dollars for peanut butter after Operation Starfall gets cancelled; Penny overhears her complaint and is left baffled about where and why Juliana bought that much peanut butter. A scene earlier in the chapter, however, shows that she bought it in Medali to practice making the favorite food of Arven's Mabosstiff.

I don't think so, I feel that the audience not knowing is the core of the trope

Another trope may be applicable here

From YMMV.She Hulk Attorney At Law:

  • Fandom Rivalry: With Better Call Saul, as the last episodes of that show, which is also about lawyers and courtrooms, were aired at a similar time to this show (with Better Call Saul ending on August 15th 2022, and She Hulk airing 3 days later) and is often favoured by She Hulk’s detractors, in part due to the former’s more realistic tone, critically acclaimed writing, and connection to Breaking Bad.

A couple of things. 1) This entry seems very one-sided and doesn't even mention the two fandoms being at odds. 2) I have never heard of this rivalry. 3) The last part seems weird to me and I can't tell why.

Found this in TheNotLoveInterest.Anime And Manga. Does it qualify?

  • Tenchi and Kiyone of Tenchi Muyo! often drift into this kind of relationship, notable because she's one of the few regular female characters not infatuated with him. Kiyone does drop that she might be interested in Tenchi in Tokyo to Ryoko and Mihoshi, saying that Tenchi could use a more serious, down-to-earth girl like Kiyone (and really, it's hard to blame her). Though given the context of the scene, and that Kiyone puts her job with the Space Police above everything else, she could have been saying it just to push Ryoko's buttons.

[up][up]I don't think it's an example of Fandom Rivalry because it doesn't seem either work's fans hate the other.

[up]I guess that The Not-Love Interest entry should be commented out because I feel it's kinda relying on "this" for context (which is a common mistake).

[up]I'd cut the note in that example because it comes off as complaining to me and I don't feel it's enough by itself to make something count as Bad Export for You. Other than that, and the fact it violates Administrivia.Examples Are Not Arguable, I feel it's valid since it involves an export being worse than the original.

Never made a Planet of Hats entry before and not sure how accurate I am on how to play with it:

  • Princesses of the Pizza Parlor: Certain patterns are expressing themselves on the world that's being portrayed in a tabletop game the characters are playing.
    • The game master himself calls the world "Princess World" as of the end of Princesses in the Darkest Depths, due to the abundance of princesses being involved in world-changing events, interfering in plans to Take Over the World, and involving themselves in the fight of the most ancient evil.
    • The continent at the south pole, featured in Cookies and Campers, is basically the Beast Man continent, being host to "Fox people, dog people, cats, mice, sheep" and more.

Any more input on the Skyward Sword / Popularity Polynomial entry from a couple pages back?

I'm hesitant to delete it without further input because consensus has gone back and forth a couple times, but I still don't see a good example there.

  • Shaman King is considered one of the better dubs that 4Kids Entertainment produced, since the series wasn't Bowdlerised as much as other works that 4Kids had under their umbrella. However, since Shaman King revolves around death and features heavy violence, it also attracted ire from Moral Guardians at the time. Coupled with having a bad timeslot and the company's negative reputation, the show flopped in the United States, and is ultimately what led 4Kids to continue their usual censorship and localization practices for future dubs.note

This is swell and all but this is NOT an example of Why Fandom Can't Have Nice Things since it has TO HAVE to do with actual fan behavior and controversy.

In YMMV.Spy X Family under Woolseyism

** During Mission 12, Loid and Yor react with embarrassment when their hands touch, making Yuri suspicious and asking if they're really married. In the manga, Loid and Yor suddenly have their fake lovey-dovey photo in hand as they respond, implying they grabbed it from the nearby stand between panels—in the anime, Loid and Yor instead do a mutual heart shape with their hands, achieving the same effect without having to disrupt the scene's flow.
I'm pretty sure this is not an example for the trope because it has zero discussion of translation from one language to another, but I want to double check.

According to Power Stereotype Flip, the person with poison powers generally isn't a nice person even if they're not actually bad guy. Does that means a Nice Guy with the aftermentioned power counts - or do they have to be more specific?

Because as far as I remember, Kaede "Maple" Honjo is both tropes at once.

I might have a feeling that it looks way too simple, but 1. Maple clearly has poisonous powers through the "Hydra" skill, and 2. Maple's running on the Nice Girl personality as "her defining trait".

EDIT: [down] Thanks, will get this added into the trope example list.

Having seen that show, I think it's correct but broader than poison abilities specifically - one of the running gags is the contrast between Maple's Nice Girl personality and her growing array of Lovecraftian Superpowers in general.

Can Second Love apply to a character that's been someone's third love interest ? Aka the character they are with has been in love with 2 other characters before dating them ?

Was thinking of adding these tropes for Fire Country.

  • All for Nothing: In ninth episode, Gabriela and Bode attempt to rescue a injured woman in the forest who caused the car accident from the last episode. While they are rescued, it turns out the women had internal injuries and died, making Gabriela and Bode's efforts worthless.

  • Retirony: In episode ten, one of the firefighter prisoner gets his early parole after completing the program and actually decides to become a firefighter. He then ends up being pinned under a firetruck after a delivery truck crashes into the station. Him and some others are upset because he may end up dying just as he is about to be released. Luckily he ends up ok, subverting the trope.

[up][up]Yea, the main page for Second Love states it can apply if it involves a third Love Interest instead.

[up]That All for Nothing entry sounds more like "Shaggy Dog" Story to me since it seems their efforts were doomed from the beginning. As for the Retirony entry, I don't think it counts because it doesn't involve him retiring.

So, I found this tropeslashed example from the Recap. The Loud House S 5 E 1 Schooled page:

  • Felony Misdemeanor / Serious Business: Canada, being Canada, absolutely loves their maple syrup. When Lincoln (politely) turns down the offer of having syrup on his pancakes at a local restaurant, the Canadians are so offended that he's banned from Canada for three years and sent back to Royal Woods Middle School.

Either it should be shortened to either one of these or replaced with Disproportionate Retribution. Felony Misdemeanor is not likely to refer to the description because it refers to a strong response to a minor crime; no crimes or theft are involved in that scene. Disproportionate Retribution, which refers to big punishments to minor offenses or mishaps, would more likely fit the description of Lincoln getting banned from Canada for three years by simply declining syrup for his pancakes.

I have a question about subversions and defied. If a character makes a conscious decision to stop playing a trope straight, is it a subversion or defied?

Example: A character starts off as a Jerk with a Heart of Gold, but eventually makes a conscious decision to stop acting like a jerk and become a pure Nice Guy. Did the character defy being a Jerk with a Heart of Gold or the character subvert the trope?

Is it justified in this example to Pay Evil unto Evil?

Example: Emperor Evulz and The Generalissimo Marcus together with some other people (their personal enemies and "witnesses of their business") brutally kill all the relatives and friends of Trevor and Drake (so that they do not interfere with their terrorist activities) and subject them to torture and psychological violence themselves (to break them and so that they do not interfere with them). Drake is dying of despair, and Trevor having gained strength out of desperation and a desire to stop the terror policy of these two Complete Monsters commits sabotage in their headquarters and thereby kills them and their minions, as a payback for their monstrous and inhuman acts in general, and not just for personal pain.
