YMMV / Dropkick on My Devil

Go To

  • Accidental Aesop: As Jashin-chan says in The Dentist Episode, parents should pay more attention to their children than their smartphones (otherwise, she will kill them).
  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Does Jashin truly have any good in her, or is she pure evil?
  • And You Thought It Would Fail: Considering other series in lieu of Dropkick having been came and went examples, plus with barely any fanfare upon release of its anime adaptation and not many vocal fans, it was expected to another one of those to become forgotten, only remembered by those who tuned in. In a surprise turn of events, its few viewers would be loud enough for a 2nd season, and later 3rd season to be made due to Blu-Ray sales and crowdfunding, with a 4th season on the way. Said crowdfunding for the 3rd season was achieved in just 33 hours. Years later, it happened again with the 4th season in underneath 24 hours.
  • Awesome Music: "Ano Ko ni Dropkick", which also serves as an Expository Theme Tune, describing the basic premise of the anime.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Some people find the titular character humorous especially in her failed attempts at killing Yurine, while others find her an annoying brat.
  • Broken Base:
    • With the "Escape Arc" in the middle of X. Some find it an interesting detour from the regular stories present in the show, while others consider it too much of an advertisement for the cites (who helped made the season possible in the first place) it focuses on, as it takes up 1/3 of the season. This also leads into the specific episodes of the arc itself, and whether or not as a whole the arc is good, bad, or individually are of different quality from another.
    • Pekola's endless streak of being a Butt-Monkey, Chew Toy, Cosmic Plaything (depending how much she suffers). After 150~ chapters in the manga you just start feeling sorry for her since her situation never improves and things almost never go right for her despite her best efforts, and unlike Jashin she rarely deserves the bad stuff that happens to her. Some people find Pekola's designated status as the resident Butt-Monkey funny, others just feel sorry for her and wish the author would give her a break.
  • Cult Classic: While fairly niche among general anime and manga fans despite running since the early 2010s and generally overlooked during any anime season it airs in, it has a devoted cult following that was able to save it from complete obscurity, with it being notably popular on 4chan. It got to win Akiba Souken's Anime of the Year in 2018, winning by a landslide of the votes, despite being one of the least viewed shows at the time of its original release. A major example of its cult status is the crowdfunding to get season 3 produced that was granted in the end, and by the third season, the anime series became a notable cult classic enough to where a season 4 was decided upon. With a projected lifespan of at least 7 years on the air (2018 - 2025) and an ongoing manga since 2012, it may just be the modern example of this for anime and manga.
  • Designated Hero: Yurine. Granted Jashin-chan is the Villain Protagonist who constantly tried to murder her, however Yurine herself is no stranger to immoral acts. She's killed Jashin-chan in unnecessarily brutal ways and is all too happy to torture her to the point of borderline sadist levels for very mundane reasons.
  • Even Better Sequel: Just by featuring Hatsune Miku as a regular, and blend in with the series characters and comedy, the third season is better received by viewers. In general, each season is better received than the last.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The second season came out in the middle of the Coronavirus pandemic and features an episode in which the characters are afraid of a Chinese Jiangshi spreading weird diseases.
  • I Knew It!: Many viewers were expecting Miku to sing at some point during her appearances in X. She does so plenty ot times.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: A lot of people tuned into the show when the third season aired, solely because Hatsune Miku is a recurring minor character throughout the season. To further emphasize this, two brief clips of Miku from the show that were posted to the official YouTube channel generated over a million views each, more than any other individual clip on the channel. In return, Jashin-chan Dropkick X, the third season, has becoming more popular than its preceding seasons.
  • Memetic Mutation: Miku's debut appearance has become quite popular for recreation. A version featuring ULTRAKILL blew up in popularity after the third season finished airing.
  • Moe:
    • Sweet-natured Medusa. She's so cute, she turns people to stone when they look at her. Lampshaded in-universe when a random guy immediately tells how cute she is by hearing her voice, despite not being able to see her face due to the paper bag over her head. After removing the bag and seeing her face, he screams the word "Moe" before promptly turning to stone.
    • Pekora is also super cute, which only adds to her woobieness.
    • Hatsune Miku in her cameos, due to the fact she is, unlike how the series treats otaku, given the utmost respect, being portrayed as a cheerful young girl who barely understands what's going on.
  • Nausea Fuel: Most of the moments Jashin-chan gets sliced up by Yurine are unsettling.
  • Older Than They Think: Most viewers believed that Miku's cameos in S3 were Miku's first official anime appearance that aren't just shout-outs, but she actually had previously appeared as a full-fledged character in Shinkansen Henkei Robo Shinkalion and Super Robot Wars UX. Dropkick however is the first where she is a prominent overarching character, appearing in every episode of X.
  • Signature Scene: As a whole, Hatsune Miku's appearances throughout the third season. Specifically, her first appearance where Jashin steals her green onion and Miku is bestowed 100 yen in exchange to her joy.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Despite being in a world where idols exist, Miku does not perform at a concert throughout any episode of X, not even in the season finale where she instead with the rest of the cast encourages Jashin to go into the sun to save Earth. At least she sings in several of her cameos.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: Jashin-chan is a Jerkass, a Narcissist and The Bully who tries to kill Yurine Once an Episode. Naturally, she gets punished for that...but in over-the-top, horrifically gruesome maimings and killings, and Yurine does the same to her for minor screwups, or even when Jashin-chan is completely innocent. Even when it's not Yurine who does it, it's rare for her to make it through a day without getting injured for comedy. Jashin-chan is never allowed to get back at Yurine, and the only person she gets to get one over on is Poporon, who is an even bigger Jerkass and fantastic racist.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic:
    • While Pekora faces a lot of misfortune, most of it falls squarely on her. One example is when Yurine leaves her food, and because of her preconceived belief, she doesn't eat it. When she does decide to eat it, Jashin-chan had already eaten the tray of food.
    • Mei Tachibana's antics are seen by most of the cast as harmless fun even though she's a psycho Stalker with a Crush who's actually abused her power as a police officer more than once to try to seduce Jashin-chan , who isn't exactly comfortable with her approaches.
  • Vindicated by History: While its reception was never outright bad in the 2010s, it was notably considered to be a lukewarm comedy, with the general consciousness being it was okay at best, reflective in the reviews for its first season, and was expected to fall into obscurity. After it surprisingly continued into the 2020s, the praise of its characters, humor, and writing would gain it a Cult Classic status, being favorably compared to older slapstick comedy anime like Di Gi Charat and Pani Poni.
  • The Woobie:
    • Pekora was an angel from Heaven initially bent on eradicating demons and witches. Upon losing her halo thus becoming stranded on Earth, Pekora lost her powers and is reduced to residing in a cardboard box. When not searching for scraps of food to eat, Pekora would work excruciating jobs to provide for herself. Much like a walking lightning rod, Pekora is always met with misfortune some instances including having her food get stolen by Jashin-chan ; losing her earnings in a scam; and nearly getting killed by her former apprentice Poporon. With no end seemingly in sight, Pekora holds the moniker as the most sympathetic character in the series.
    • Medusa, a tender-hearted demon, is the closest "friend" to Jashin-chan . As a gorgon, Medusa has the ability to turn others to stone, but what sets her aside from most examples is the guilt she expresses for it, resorting to wearing a paper bag over her head whenever she is in public. While she dotes on Jashin-chan by providing her with money, Jashin-chan 's toxic attitude has reduced Medusa to tears on several occasions. The worst case of this is when she nearly traumatizes her by pretending to have died.
