He's a possum, and he finds garbage. More specifically, he finds garbage movies to review.

Possum Reviews is a series of film reviews by YouTuber Dr. Shaym, a creator who, like Hunter Avallone, The Amazing Atheist, and Sargon of Akkad, was one of many loved and hated YouTubers who criticized feminism, political correctness, and other aspects of radical far-leftism, and specifically like The Amazing Atheist, also criticized religion. He started the channel after his original channel was demonetized (and if some of the videos on his previous channel showing his house were any indication, he defintiely needed a source of income) and after getting tired of political videos in general.

The show follows the not-really-named Possum (unless that really is his name), who reviews various, mostly horror and action films (notably his first review, Terror Toons, as well as The Amazing Bulk), but also occasional family films (such as The Emoji Movie and Fred The Movie). He focuses on criticizing what he considers extremely frustrating clichés and errors, and often makes snide comments about certain scenes, sometimes including some of the political humor he was known for on his Dr. Shaym channel. The possum himself nearly always opens a can of beer at the beginning of a review. Oh, and he has a somewhat anthropomorphic ant for a roommate, Bigfoot is his neighbor, and he's friends with Cthulhu. Many of the skits involving Possum interacting with other characters (including the aforementioned Bigfoot) lead in to him inserting a credit sequence for his Patrons.

Since Possum was previously a controversial political YouTuber, so please keep edits civil. That said, his Possum Reviews channel is nowhere near as political as his Dr. Shaym channel.

"Hi, I'm a Possum, and I find garbage tropes":

  • Ambiguous Criminal History: Possum mentions being in prison in several reviews.
  • Berserk Button: Being called a Rodent. He ignores the space alien in the The Amazing Bulk video until it calls him one, and gets mad when Cthulhu does the same in his review of Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom.
  • Black Dude Dies First: He Lampshades the Dead Unicorn status of this trope in his review of Demon Hole, which seems to enforce it as an attempt at some sort of social commentary.
  • Catchphrase: Begins every video with "Hi, I'm a possum, and I find garbage", followed by the opening of a beer can.
  • Caustic Critic: He is extremely unkind to the movies he reviews and thinks anyone who likes whatever movie he’s talking about are stupid.
  • Circus of Fear: He is stated to have escaped from the circus in his Dumbo review, and spends part of the video fleeing a trio of Clowns that want to make him go back.
  • Did You Just Have Tea With Cthulhu:
  • Ice-Cream Koan: Discussed in his Dragonball Evolution review, where he makes fun of Grandpa Gohan's "advice" to Goku.
Goku (in the film): My Grandpa always said that in order to master my ki, I have to be at one with myself, and with my enemy. (Beat) I still don't know what that means.note
Possum: It doesn't mean anything, it's just fortune cookie bullshit meant to sound like some kind of ancient wisdom, but it's really just gibberish. I'm sorry Goku, but your grandfather was a fraud; that's why he's dead.
  • Jerkass: Possum is very caustic, nihilistic, and rude to practically everyone.
  • Malicious Misnaming: In his review of Dragonball Evolution, he repeatedly calls Piccolo names of other green characters, including but not limited to: Larry the Cucumber, Mike Wazowski, Yoda, Invader Zim, The Grinch, Shrek, and Oscar the Grouch.
  • Opinion Myopia: He outright states that anyone who likes whatever movie he’s bashing are stupid. It could be that he is joking or at lest exaggerating on purpose though.
  • Papa Wolf: Bigfoot is this towards his pet dog. In the review of Fred: The Movie, Fred himself becomes a gag character, and steals Bigfoot's dog, believing he stole Possum's dog (who doesn't actually have one). Fred lies and claims he didn't steal any dog, but when Possum hears him slip up, he lets Bigfoot know on the phone, and Bigfoot rips Fred's body in half.
  • Race Lift: He discusses this trope in both his Dragonball Evolution and The Last Airbender reviews. He doesn't have a problem with the trope itself, but points out how odd it is for Dragonball Evolution in particular (even though Goku himself in-universe technically isn't an example) because most of the other characters are Asian.
  • Real Women Don't Wear Dresses: He mocks this trope when talking about Jailbreak from The Emoji Movie.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Springtime for Hitler: Both in his first review, Terror Toons, and in his review of Suburban Sasquatch, Possum criticizes this mentality in attempting a So Bad, It's Good quality. He mentions that enjoyably bad movies are the result of Narm rather than intentionally making a movie bad.
  • Straw Nihilist: Possum himself is extremely nihilistic:
  • Take That!:
    • While it's not as political as his Dr. Shaym channel was, given that it was dedicated to criticizing "social justice warriors" and that his response to Buzzfeed's extremely controversial 36 Questions for Men video is one of the most viewed videos about feminism on YouTube, it should be no surprise that he takes many shots at feminism, modern American far-left liberalism, and identity politics.
    • That said, he's also taken shots at Channel Awesome as a result of the "Change The Channel" controversy:
      • In his review of The Last Light, he calls the naming of the main character, Rob Walker, "unfortunate".
      • In his review of Anomaly, Cthulhu gets sucked into a portal and gets sent to a horrifying alternate universe... the Channel Awesome front page.
    • While he obviously hates The Emoji Movie and considers it deserving of its reputation, he argues that it's still not the worst Sony movie.
    • Also in the same review, he makes a snide comment about how Gene and Jailbreak are riding through Spotify to get to the trash.
Possum: I'll agree that modern music sucks, but that's a pretty harsh burn, movie.
    • Also in his review of The Last Light, he criticizes what he considers the excessive use of Kevin MacLeod's music in other YouTube videos, and states that he actually uses licensed music akin to APM. It's not so much towards Kevin MacLeod himself as it is other YouTubers in this case.
  • Take That, Audience!:
    • He credits his patreon supporters partway through every episode, but in many episodes does so in an unflattering way.
    • Overlapping with Take That, Critics!, an ant character will often spout invalid but widespread criticisms towards Possum, such as invoking the Animation Age Ghetto to deflect The Emoji Movie.
