Sandbox / Award Snub Wick Check

Go To

Here a wick check will be performed for Award Snub.

Why?: This YMMV item is about when a popular work does not win an award despite general feeling that it should have won. However, it may attract complaining. This check will determine that—along with if there are In-Universe examples.

Wicks checked: 10/50

    Neutrally written (6/50)
  1. YMMV.Collateral: It received two Academy Award nominations - Best Supporting Actor and Best Editing. It wasn't nominated for Best Picture, Director, Actor, or Original Screenplay, and Tom Cruise didn't receive any nominations in spite of his chilling, type-defying performance. Mostly neutrally-written.
  2. YMMV.Blue Is The Warmest Color:
    • Inverted. To be eligible for the Best Foreign Film Academy Award, films must be released in their country by the end of September. The film was released in October 9, with producers refusing to release it a week or two earlier so it would be eligible. According to the Daily Mail, it's possible that with the holidays of the first few weeks of that month which makes it the perfect opportunity for students and the working population to watch the film, the producers will have a larger chance of recouping their costs.
    • That said, the film was eligible for categories aside from Foreign Language Film in 2013, including Best Actress for Adèle Exarchopoulos and Supporting Actress for Léa Seydoux. It failed to receive any nominations, anyway.
    • Played straight in the Cesar Awards where the film was nominated for eight awards including Best Film but only got to take home one award which was granted to Adèle Exarchopoulos as Best Breakthrough Actress. Neutrally written.
  3. Gush.Live Action Films Out of all of the films that have come out this decade so far, I doubt any of them will top the beauty that is Cloud Atlas. It's not my favorite movie of all time, but GODDAMN, it provides a rush of cinema that makes other big-budget greats like The Avengers and Avatar look downright small in comparison. The multiple usage of actors playing different roles and all with help of, for the most part, excellent make-up, highly quotable dialogue, suspenseful action sequences, memorable characters, breathtaking scope, a hauntingly whimsical score and outright immaculate pacing. It may not have won the biggest awards out there or achieve the widest audience possible, but its easily the best thing The Wachowskis (and Tom Tykwer too!) will ever make and a film that will stand the test of time. Pothole is neutrally written.
  4. YMMV.Notorious 1946: It received two Academy Award nominations - Best Supporting Actor for Claude Rains and Best Original Screenlay. It wasn't nominated for Best Picture, Director, Actor or Actress. Neutrally written.
  5. YMMV.The Stunt Man: It was nominated for three Academy Awards (Best Actor for Peter O'Toole, Best Director and Best Screenplay Based on Another Medium) and won none. Neutral writing.
  6. YMMV.The Sound Of Music:
    • The film received ten Academy Award nominations and won five, but Christopher Plummer wasn't nominated for Best Actor.
    • While Julie Andrews had won Best Actress already for Mary Poppins, many wish she had instead won for this, attributing the former win to the politics surrounding her missing out on My Fair Lady. She however was up against Julie Christie who had just become a symbol for the 'Swinging Sixties', and Darling marked her Star-Making Role, making her winning over Andrews more understandable. Neutral writing.

    Complaining or negative tone (3/50)
  1. YMMV.American Hustle:
    • Some were rather annoyed that, despite receiving ten Academy Award nominations, the film failed to earn recognition for its Makeup/Hairstyling (which was arguably one of its most praised features).
    • Were it not for Cate Blanchett's excellent work in Blue Jasmine, Amy Adams might have finally won her coveted Oscar instead of going home empty handed for the 5th time. Written negatively—"going home empty handed for the 5th time", "rather annoyed".
  2. YMMV.The Dark Crystal: How in the blue blazes did the film not get a Best Original Score nomination from the Academy Awards?
    • Bafflingly, despite its groundbreaking use of puppets and animatronics and its elaborate costume and set design the movie didn’t get any nominations for those categories. One does wonder how it would’ve fared against the likes of Gandhi, ET The Extraterrestrial and especially Blade Runner. Complain-y writing.
  3. YMMV.Roger And Me: Despite being one of the most original documentaries at the time and being a box office success, it wasn't even nominated for an Academy Award. Edge case, but I'm putting it here—"despite being one of the most original", "wasn't even nominated".
