YMMV / The Stunt Man

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement: Although based on a novel, The Other Wiki only has a page for the movie.
  • Audience-Alienating Premise: The film was hated by the studio execs, who declared it to be completely unmarketable: a Black Comedy about a criminal who hides out as a stuntman on a film shoot, only to discover that the director is a lunatic who goes to quite disturbing lengths in the name of Enforced Method Acting. It took two years to find a distributor, and Peter O'Toole famously quipped years later "The film wasn't released, it escaped!"
  • Award Snub: It was nominated for three Academy Awards (Best Actor for Peter O'Toole, Best Director and Best Screenplay Based on Another Medium) and won none.
  • Cult Classic
  • Vindicated by History: It flopped at the box office and got mixed reviews from critics, but is more appreciated today. Despite being panned in the New York Times and by Roger Ebert, the film had a lot of critical success. It has an 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, and to quote notcoming.com, "Ironic in discussing this film’s unpopularity is the fact that it received exceptional reviews. Critics loved this film."
