• Americans Hate Tingle: The film was a hit among American critics. In the rest of the world, specially Europe? Not so much.
• Award Snub: It got screwed due to being released in the summer but there's a case to be made that Paul Giamatti really deserved to win Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards.
• Cliché Storm: While doing research on the story, Ron Howard was disheartened to discover a Popeye cartoon with basically the same plot all the way through, indicating it was such a well-worn cliche plot that it was even being satirized back in the 1930s.
• Overshadowed by Controversy: Many viewers know more about the film's extremely controversial Historical Villain Upgrade of Max Baer than anything else about it.
• Tear Jerker: It's to be expected in a film set in The Great Depression, but those moments hit as hard as they can.
