Recap / 9-1-1: Lone Star S1E3 "Texas Proud"

Go To

Marjan gets in trouble with her mosque when a video of her hijab coming off during an emergency goes viral and Judd calls out TK for his habits.

Tropes featured in the episode:

  • After-Action Patch-Up: After his Bar Brawl, Carlos helps TK clean up his face.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: After receiving the testimony about the blue pickup truck, Michelle is advised by both Carlos and Owen to maybe, just maybe put her vendetta with Dustin aside to civilly ask him what he knows about that instead of continuing to accuse him. She’s naturally met with scorn when she does swallow her pride.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Judd blows up at TK and starts a fight after TK disobeys a direct order on a rescue. The next time they approach each other, Judd apologizes and explains that seeing TK go under in the corn silo reminded him of losing his original team.
    • While processing TK after the bar brawl, Carlos is somewhat standoffish with informing him he’s clear of charges and to talk to someone (half because he’s on-shift, and half from being salty about the botched dinner date) about what made TK pick the fight. He lightens up significantly when TK opens up about his breakup and depressive state, however.
  • Bar Brawl: T.K. instigates one while completely sober (albeit depressed).
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Downplayed with TK’s injuries from the bar fight. Aside from a split lip and some bruising along his left eye, we aren’t made aware of any other injuries he sustained before he was processed.
  • Bringing in the Expert: Owen puts Judd in charge of the silo rescue because Judd is the only firefighter on the crew who has dealt with a situation like this and thus knows the dangers involved.
  • Car Cushion: A yoga instructor lands on the top of a passing car when she falls from her balcony. She survives, but with severe enough injuries that could permanently keep her from independently walking again.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with a woman trying and failing to drive away from a monstrous tornado.
  • Contrived Coincidence: Carlos ends up being the officer to process TK when he gets arrested for the Bar Brawl. Carlos’ excuse is that Austin isn’t that big.
  • Death Glare: TK gives one to Judd after their fight.
  • Double Entendre:
TK: (indignantly) You know I’m holding a dart?
Carlos: (unfazed) And I’m packing a piece.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Carlos has a brief moment of this with Michelle after their discussion about talking to Dustin, which prompts Michelle to apologize about the one-sidedness of their friendship.
Carlos: (put out) “Hey, Carlos. How have you been lately? Seeing someone new? Isn’t friendship fun?
  • Eating Contest: Michelle and her crew are called out to the aftermath of a steak-eating competition.
  • Fisticuff-Provoking Comment: A pissed-off Judd gives TK several of these before they get in a brief wrestling fight.
TK: I was following my instincts.
Judd: Your instincts, based on what, all your silo experience in Times Square?
TK: Hey, I’m not doing this with you, alright?
Judd: Yeah, must be real nice that you get to move right to the front lines while everybody else deserving of a shot—
TK: You don’t know the first thing about me, dude.
Judd: Nah, man, bet you were killin’ it in New York City, so you get to move with your daddy down here at the drop of a hat.
    TK: Seriously, Judd, back off.
Judd: Or what, pretty boy? You gonna go tell your daddy? You gonna tell him “Judd’s hurtin’ my feelings?” Guess nobody up north had the balls to tell the coach’s son his crap stinks.
TK: It's not that she didn't see you. It's that she didn't like what she saw. (winks at the drunk men)
(One drunk swings at TK and a fight ensues)
  • Foreshadowing: A severe weather warning is heard on a woman’s car radio partway through the episode, this leads into the plot of the next episode when she gets sucked into a tornado.
  • Given Name Reveal: Carlos reveals T.K’s full name to be Tyler Kennedy Strand when he is brought into the police station after his Bar Brawl.
  • Human Shield: When Marjan’s hijab comes off during the silo rescue, Owen and the rest of the 126 form a human wall, shielding her from bystanders that are filming the rescue.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Mateo is very complimentary of Marjan’s hair, and excited about it getting her trending again. It doesn’t really help.
  • Instant Web Hit: The video of Marjan’s undone hijab becomes another viral hit, hitting 6 million views on Instagram. It’s far from a proud moment for Marjan, though.
  • Internal Reveal: TK explains to Carlos the reasoning for his freak-out in “Yee-Haw (1.02)”, the breakdown of his previous relationship, and his relapse with substances.
  • It's a Small World, After All: TK can’t believe that Carlos is the officer that is going to process him after his arrest, Carlos says that Austin ain't that big.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Though he went way off base by accusing TK of nepotism, Judd was right in that TK blatantly defied him when he tried to pull Marjan out of the corn— he was responsible for the entire 126 and Kenny (the boy who got stuck in the silo)’s collective safety and would not want a repeat of the fertilizer factory explosion.
  • Little "No": Carlos says this, as he and Owen watch the video of the yoga instructor attempting to hang from her balcony and then falling.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: Before Marjan frantically tries to rearrange her hijab, we see that her hair reaches down to her hips.
  • Mistaken for Suicidal: A yoga instructor that falls onto the top of a car, is first believed to be a jumper. Carlos and Owen find she was actually doing a stunt for YouTube, trying to show that she was strong enough to hang off her balcony by her legs. She wasn’t.
  • Nepotism: Judd believes that this is the case with TK while working under his father. Judging from TK’s angered reaction, this doesn’t seem to be the case.
  • Post-Victory Collapse: One of the steak eating contest competitors, Sonya, cheers at successfully eating all of her own meat just before falling to the floor.
  • Quicksand Sucks: A variation occurs with a corn silo. As Judd explains, silo-stored corn can develop air pockets that can collapse and suck in a person standing on top of the corn. The victim then starts sinking, which makes rescue difficult because the corn exerts a lot of pressure on the victim's body. If you try to pull the person straight out, you could literally rip him/her in half.
  • Slut-Shaming: After the video of Marjan losing her hijab goes viral, she is told that she needs to find a new place to worship because she is too proud.
  • Social Media Before Reason: A yoga instructor who tries to hang off her balcony by her legs for a YouTube video. When the team responds, she asks for her phone.
  • Take My Hand!: TK instinctually yells for Marjan to grab his hand and dives after her as she gets sucked under, which predictably doesn’t work out for either of them.
  • That's an Order!: Judd tells TK this, word for word, as he goes to take off his safety harness, to try and save Marjan from the corn silo. TK disobeys and ends up sucked under with Marjan.
  • Too Dumb to Live: A yoga instructor with a web show tries to show off to her viewers by hanging upside down from her balcony using only her leg muscles to keep her from falling. Turns out her leg muscles were not that strong. She survives the multi-story fall, but her body is horribly mangled.
  • Urine Trouble: When Michelle inserts a catheter to release extra pee from Sonya’s bladder, she urinates hard. Said extra pee gets sprayed all over the bar’s stage, and onto the honor wall for the eating contest.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: It’s not shown, but Owen vomits on Dustin’s shoes after having too many shots with Michelle.
  • What Were You Thinking?:
    • Carlos doesn’t ask this word-for-word of TK’s reason for getting into the bar brawl, but the sentiment is clear. This spurs TK to open up:
Carlos: Look, I’m not trying to be your boyfriend. Or even your friend, if you’re not into that, but you ought to talk to someone about why you were compelled to do something so suicidal.
    • Michelle asks this of Owen as well when she notices Dustin in the fire station’s garage.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: TK’s reaction to seeing Carlos at the police station.
