And of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

While discussing about Father Donovan's possible illegal schemes involving crimes the Flying Squad has crossed paths with, Maddie and the player are interrupted by Evie, who informs them about a corpse being found on the train tracks. There, both police officers see the body of none other than Father Donovan, shot in the chest and sliced in a half after being run over by a train.

Tropes:

  • Attack on the Heart: Father Donovan died of being shot in the heart.
  • Back for the Finale: Seamus O'Neill, Commissioner Baldwin, Edward Whimple, and Vinnie Costa all return as suspects in this case, which is the last one set in New Haven.
  • Call-Back: Oscar Trefusis, Justin Lawson, and Audrey Scott reappear during the Additional Investigation while Justin and the player look for more clues regarding Irish immigrants being enslaved by rich people.
  • The Climax: For New Haven.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Dirty Cop: Edward Whimple, the Desk Jockey from the Concordian Police Department, is revealed to be the one taking bribes and payments from rich people to supply them with Irish immigrants for cheap labor, and also the one who made Rowdy Rick bully Officer Koll into starting the fire that destroyed half of New Haven.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: During one of his interrogations, arrest, and trial, Edward implies that he feels disrespected by people who underwhelm him just because he's a Desk Jockey, and that the reason why accepted money from the elite to supply them with Irish immigrants was because he wanted to be rich and acquire respect.
  • Due to the Dead: After Maddie suggests that Seamus starts an immigrant aid fund with Whimple's money, Seamus decides to name it after Father Donovan.
  • Evil All Along: Edward Whimple, the police officer Desk Jockey you met in previous cases, is revealed to be the evil mastermind behind the fire that razed New Haven and the one who has been supplying Irish immigrants to rich people as cheap labor.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: At the start of the case, Maddie jokes with the fact that, since the player and the Flying Squad have dealt with a fire that almost destroyed the entirety of the district, that means they must be literal fire-forged friends.
  • Good All Along: Father Donovan is revealed to be this post-mortem, as he genuinely had no idea about Edward using his list of Irish immigrants for his own gain and even tried to confront him once he discovered it, which led to his death.
  • Grudging "Thank You": Maddie says one of these to Commissioner Baldwin when he congratulates you for solving the murder, since he also put you through hell during the investigation.
Baldwin: Of course, you did commit the folly of suspecting ME of murder, but I shall chalk it up to the thrill of the chase.
    Maddie: Thank you, I suppose...
  • Guest-Star Party Member: Justin Lawson joins the player during the Additional Investigation while looking for clues regarding the rich people that were paying Edward for Irish immigrants.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Father Donovan was cut down the middle by the train. Keep in mind that his body would probably be in worse shape if the conductor hadn't noticed his body.
  • He Knows Too Much: Edward killed Father Donovan after the latter confronted him for selling Irish immigrants for cheap labor to the elite.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: One of the killer's traits is that they are a sharp shooter, since Dick deduces Father Donovan was shot from afar while in total darkness as the killer asked him to met at 3 AM at the train station.
  • Karma Houdini: Apart from an insignificant fine, Oscar Trefusis manages to get scot-free after he's revealed to be one of Edward's clients, since there isn't sufficient evidence to convict him for any crime even when he basically used Irish people as slaves.
  • Killer Cop: Edward Whimple, a cop working as a Desk Jockey for the Concordian Police Department, is the killer of this case.
  • Last Episode, New Character: Gladys Perrin, a barber assistant from the shop Father Donovan used to frequent, is introduced in this case as a suspect.
  • Made a Slave: Seamus was angry with Father Donovan because he found him a "job" at a rich person's house who basically treated him like a slave and even beat him up when he asked for pay.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: After shooting Father Donovan, Edward dragged his body to the train tacks so it would be minced and appear that he was killed by the vehicle, but the train driver saw his corpse in time and managed to slow down enough to "only" cut him in a half.
  • The Man Behind the Man: Edward Whimple is revealed to be both the one providing the elite with Irish people to treat them as slaves and also the one who made Officer Koll burn the evidence room and indirectly started the fire, since he needed to get rid of the complains that the Irish were filling against the rich.
  • Mean Boss: Commissioner Baldwin shows shades of this in this case, threatening with firing you if you keep treating him like a suspect and only giving you limited time to solve the murder.
  • Mushroom Samba: Happens to Dick after he ingests some hallucinogenic mushrooms to test them.
Dick: The body was then dragged somewhere - to the tracks, most likely. And then, naturally, a fire monster drove over it.
<Player's Name>, the walls are getting restless... You ought to go before they attack!
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: After the case is solved, Maddie says there's a glass of absinthe waiting for her.
  • Never My Fault:
    • After you discover it was Commissioner Baldwin who took the revolver used to kill Father Donovan from the police station and lost it, he refuses to accept responsibility for it and instead berates you for suspecting him, threatening to fire you if you keep bothering him.
    • When you confront Oscar Trefusis for his deals with Edward Whimple, he claims to be the victim here since all the Irish Edward sent to him were useless, as Harriet got killed and Seamus ran away.
  • Not Me This Time: Vinnie, who is Acquainted with Emergency Services, says this to defend himself during his interrogation.
Vinnie: You police, you always think the worst. I had nothing to do with Padre Donovan's death, nothing! Mamma mia, I'm a good Catholic! I kill no priests!
  • Oh, Crap!: Maddie has this reaction when Viola informs you the fibers you sent to her belong to the killer and came from a police vest, meaning that the culprit is someone working for the force.
  • The Oldest Profession: Gladys Perrin used to be a prostitute until Father Donovan found her a job at the barber shop.
  • I Owe You My Life: During one of her interrogations, Gladys claims Father Donovan changed her life by finding her a job that didn't involve being a prostitute.
  • Perfumigation: Maddie coughs when Viola sprays her with a perfume that she just invented, and also finds Edward's perfume to be disgusting while he claims it makes him more manly.
  • Pet the Dog: During the Additional Investigation, Maddie and the player use the money confiscated from Edward to build a charity for Irish immigrants so they will have a better life than the offered tenement, something that greatly pleases Seamus.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: When Judge Takakura asks Edward why he didn't burn the evidence from the police station himself since, you know, he's the Desk Jockey, Edward responds that it would be easier to track him down and jeopardize his plan.
  • Race Against the Clock: Commissioner Baldwin only gives you a few hours to solve the case or else he'll take it away from you, since you've pissed him off by labeling him as a suspect.
  • Red Herring: Commissioner Baldwin seems like the more plausible suspect throughout the whole case, since he was the one who took the weapon from the evidence room, refuses to accept the fact that Father Donovan was murdered, attempts to kick you out of the investigation for suspecting him, and it's heavily implied that the killer is connected to the police department, which turns out true... except that it's Edward Whimple the one involved in the whole ordeal, not Baldwin.
  • The Scapegoat: Edward had been using Father Donovan as this, diverting the Flying Squad's attention towards him due to his criminal past while Edward kept using his immigrant list to sell Irish people as cheap labor.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: When you interrogate him after his incarceration, Edward says that you better get him out of prison or his rich "friends" will, who obviously never and never would come to his rescue.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Edward realizes the Flying Squad is onto him and tries to skip town.
  • Selective Obliviousness: For some reason, Commissioner Baldwin refuses to accept the fact that Father Donovan was murdered instead of accidentally killed by the train until you solve the case.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Speak Ill of the Dead: Seamus does this with Father Donovan due to believing he was the one who sold him to Trefusis as a slave, although he later regrets him when it's revealed it was actually Edward.
  • Train Escape: Edward attempts to escape his arrest by boarding a train, but Maddie and the player manage to catch him and arrest him at gunpoint.
  • Villains Want Mercy: Edward is horrified to be sentenced to life in prison, knowing that crooks down there don’t really like cops.
  • You Killed My Father: During the investigation, is discovered that the man Father Donovan killed and served time in prison for was Vinnie's father, something he was planning to take revenge on.
