Manehattan

     Holly Heartwood
First Appearance: M.F.D.

An Earth pony and ex-derby mare who inherits a house in Manehattan and joins the fire service.

  • Acrofatic: She's not massively fat, but she's noticeably chubby. She also made a living on the Roller Derby for a time, but later left the profession due to low pay (among other things).
  • Alliterative Name: Holly Heartwood.
  • Berserk Button: Don't suggest she's fat. When she learns she failed a physical because of her weight, she blew up.
  • Big Eater: She's a large mare, and does a very physically demanding job, so this trope is justified.
  • Determinator: One of her defining quirks. She even states in an early chapter that she "doesn't know how to quit".
  • Big "SHUT UP!": She shouts this when Alfredo calls the both of them "acquaintances" rather than friends.
  • Deconstructed Trope: A Super Window Jump may look cool and all, and it was a spur-of-the-moment decision at the time, but it still gave Holly potentially severe injuries and put her on sick leave until she was well to work again.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Dislikes hotdogs.
  • Epic Fail: Her first time trying on her firefighting suit ended in spectacular disaster.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: She decides she needs one after discovering a burnt corpse in the remains of the sweatshop fire in Chapter 17.
  • Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique: She subjects Fink Apple to this in order to get information.
  • Made of Iron: Survives a forty-foot drop with only a few microfractures, rather than completely shattering her legs.
  • Shared Family Quirks: According to her aunt Cara Cara, being a "hot-headed cuss" runs in the family. Holly's cousin, Applejack, Bearer of Honesty, has the stubbornness as well.
  • The Smart Guy: Holly is noted to be intelligent, something the Fire House values since they investigate arson cases most of the time.
  • Stout Strength: She's chubby, and due to being an Earth pony, has that tribe's tendency for great strength.
  • Super Window Jump: She jumps out the window of a burning building to save a mare and her foal, while the latter two are strapped to her back. They all live, but she ends up with microfractures and a first-degree sprain.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: In Chapter 19, Holly vomits during a breathing exercise after discovering child pornography in the foreman's shack.
  • Weight Woe: She used to be given flak for her chubbiness back in the roller derbies; managers would try persuade her to lose weight so she can be more popular, while fellow rollers complained of her always pushing them around and hurting them with her girth. This is why she hates being called "fat".
  • You're Insane!: A mare she saves from a burning building in Chapter 13 shouts "ARE YOU CRAZY?" in response to her attempting a Super Window Jump.

     Toot Toot
First Appearance: M.F.D.

A pegasus stallion who works at the Fire House. He is Knock Knock's husband.

     Knock Knock
First Appearance: M.F.D.

A unicorn stallion and captain of the Fire House. He is Toot Toot's husband.

  • …And That Little Girl Was Me: How he tells Holly his story of how he became a firefighter and earned his fire axe cutie mark.
  • Anger Born of Worry: He was furious with Holly's Super Window Jump stunt in Chapter 13, and very much concerned for her. It helps that Holly's a rookie in the job.
  • Disappeared Dad: His father died fighting fires when he was very young.
  • Kicked Upstairs: Discussed; because he always insisted on doing his job properly, Toot Toot suspects their superiors may inflict this trope on him to keep him in line. However, he also suspects that it may result in a Reassignment Backfire.
  • Lean and Mean: Subverted; he's a tall, thin-looking unicorn, but his behavior towards Holly on the first day was a Secret Test of Character meant for her.
  • Repetitive Name: Knock Knock. Justified, as simple, repetitive names are easier to say in high-stress situations. His real name is Claybourne.
  • Stay in the Kitchen: Discussed; he informs Holly on the first day that while Toot Toot's behavior was part of a Secret Test of Character, others will act like this for real.

     Fizz Fizz
First Appearance: M.F.D.

A small blue drake working at the Fire House.

  • Blue Is Heroic: Is described as having electric blue scales, and works at the Fire House.

     Alfredo Noodle
First Appearance: M.F.D.

The head of the maids who clean Holly's house.

  • Above the Influence: Alfredo, while Holly is high as a kite after getting treatment for diving out of a window, refuses to take advantage of her, even while he's bathing her.
  • Gayngst: Subverted; while he did get a lot of flak for being a transvestite from homophobic ponies, he decided to not let his troubles or his preferences run him, so he tries to keep his personal life separate from his personal life.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Bathing a doped-up Holly (after her hospitalization for jumping out a window) made him want to have a nip of cognac.
  • Insistent Terminology: He is a maid, not a butler.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is derived from a pasta dish (alfredo noodles), and he's a Supreme Chef.
  • Mistaken for Gay: By the maids working under him. He's actually not, although he is a male-to-female transvestite.
  • Mundane Utility: As he said, he specializes in "domestic magic". A heating spell can be used to keep food warm so they can still stay fresh enough to be eaten.
  • Neat Freak: Kind of goes with the job as a maid.
  • Shout-Out: Alfredo mentions he's playing a stage role as Evil Doctor Wienerschnitzel in Chapter 16.
  • Supreme Chef: Naturally, since cooking is a skill a maid must have.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: He's a male-to-female transvestite. It's got him fired once and thrown out of several apartment buildings due to homophobic ponies not wanting him around.

     Cornflower
First Appearance: M.F.D.

A pegasus policepony working on the sweatshop fire case.
