M.F.D. is a story written by Kudzuhaiku, and yet another entry in The Weedverse.

As Tarnish and Maud continue adventuring, Holly Heartwood, a veteran of the Roller Derby circuit, moves to Manehattan after getting her inheritance and a small, old row house from a recently deceased relative. She decides to settle down for a bit and get a job, and applies at the local historic Manehattan Fire Department...

..And finds herself dragged into a war.

M.F.D. contains examples of:

  • Above the Influence: Alfredo, while Holly is high as a kite after getting treatment for diving out of a window, refuses to take advantage of her, even while he's bathing her.
  • Acrofatic: Holly Heartwood. She's chubby, but she's learned how to use her body weight to her advantage by propelling her roller-skating speed.
  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Toot Toot gives Holly a whack just before her first job. It is affectionate in context, as it's checking her gear is secure.
  • ...And That Little Girl Was Me: How Knock Knock tells Holly the story of how he got his fire axe cutie mark and his firefighting job.
  • Badass Gay: Knock Knock and Toot Toot.
  • Berserk Button: Don't call Holly fat, because she will explode.
  • The Bet: Several are made about Holly's progress during her entry tests. After a while the ponies betting against her wise up.
  • Advertisement:
  • Big Damn Heroes: The job description of the firefighters. Holly even name-drops it in Chapter 7.
  • Cassandra Truth: Invoked, no-one will believe Fink if he says a mare picked up a dumpster and hit him with it.
  • Continuity Nod: Holly reads an article about Tarnish and Maud's rescue of Grey Owl in The Weed.
  • Deadly Euphemism: Firefighters lost in the line of duty don't "die", they "fall".
  • Death by Despair: Holly's aunt Cara Cara died shortly after her old maid, Duck Pond, died. Alfredo explained the two were rather close.
  • The Dreaded: Invoking the name of Luna or her Wardens will get any criminal begging for mercy.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Not Holly herself, but she thinks it's unfair that she, a rookie, got fame while veterans like Knock Knock and Toot Toot are ignored.
  • Epic Fail: Holly's first attempt of getting into her firefighting suit ends in spectacular disaster.
  • Fictional Counterpart: The Stony Spooky Cinematic Review to The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
  • Hypocrite: Alfred sees the pegasi as this; they talk of tribal unity and friendship, but they still keep the skies inaccessible to unicorns and pegasi.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Holly, after she discovers a corpse during the sweatshop fire investigation.
  • Insistent Terminology:
    • Alfredo Noodle prefers to be called a maid, not a butler.
    • Holly is not fat, she's a full-figured mare.
  • Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique: Fink Apple is subjected to this by Holly to get information on what's going on.
  • Kayfabe: Discussed, Holly hated this aspect of the Derby.
  • Kicked Upstairs: Discussed; Toot Toot mentions that Knock Knock has made enemies by insisting on doing his job properly, and their superiors might attempt this... though he also suspects that it could boost his credibility. Later on, Cornflower actually is, after he makes a fuss about interdepartmental cooperation.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Justified; part of firefighting duty is knowing when and how to escape a dangerous situation if it proves too much to be handled.
  • Lean and Mean: Subverted with Knock Knock, who's a tall, thin unicorn stallion, but he means well for his employees.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: Knock Knock and Toot Toot frequently insult each other at a moment's notice.
  • Made of Iron: Holly, she gets only a few microfractures from a drop that should have shattered her legs, impressing the doctors treating her.
  • Married to the Job: Knock Knock jokes that he and Toot Toot are in a consensual polyamorous relationship.
  • Mattress Tag Gag: It's on the (very short) list of crimes that Holly has committed.
  • Neat Freak: Alfredo keeps the house very clean.
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat: The Manehattan budgeters, as Knock Knock put it, would "rather watch the city burn than spend a bit of money".
  • One-Hit KO: Holly performs one on Toot Toot to get a job at the Fire House. His response was "I Can't Feel My Legs."
  • Pædo Hunt: The foreman's shack of the sweatshop fire is filled with foal pornography, which gets the heroes even more desperate to bring down the pony responsible.
  • Peek-a-Boo Corpse: Holly nearly trips over something while investigating a sweatshop fire, only to discover, to her horror, that she found a burnt corpse.
  • Rag Tag Bunch Of Misfits: The Fire Service, because normal ponies don't willingly run/fly into burning buildings.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Holly and Alfredo finally get one in chapter 28.
  • Repetitive Name: Knock Knock and Toot Toot. Justified, as simple, repetitive names are easier to say in high-stress situations.
  • Ring Ring Crunch: Holly's alarm clock, on her second day of tests.
  • Secret Test of Character: Toot Toot acts like a sexist jerk to see if Holly has what it takes to survive in the Fire Service. She knocks him flat.
  • Stay in the Kitchen: Toot Toot, a pegasus stallion at the fire house, tries this on Holly when she applies to the Fire House. It doesn't end well. It's an act, to test her capabilities.
  • Tele-Frag: Blinky, one of Knock Knock's mentors, fell this way. Saved two foals in the process.
  • Tempting Fate: Discussed, Knock Knock is yelled at by Toot Toot for saying it's a quiet day.
  • Theme Naming: The fire crew have names that are repeated monosyllables. Justified, as when you're in a dangerous situation, they're easy and quick to say and understand.
  • Unrequited Love: Pretty Posy is implied to have a crush on Alfredo.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: Alfredo, it's got him thrown out of several apartment buildings, which is why he ends up living at Holly's house.
  • You Need to Get Laid: Holly does this to herself after she starts having wet dreams again.
