These are recommendations made by Tropers for Doctor Who, all of which have to be signed to stay on the page. Feel free to add your own favorite fanfic to the list, but remember to use the template found here.

You can also add to the current recommendations if you want. Refrain from posting Conversation in the Main Page, though; that goes in the discussion page.

Doctor Who has a long history of fan-fiction in non-text formats, as well as a long and proud history of promoting fans into Show Runner status. The Doctor Who Audio Visuals cassette tapes, for example, were circulated from 1985-91 by Nicholas Briggs and other future Promoted Fanboys - who now run the official Big Finish Doctor Who and have adapted many of the stories into canon.

• Synopsis: A webcomic that is Exactly What It Says on the Tin. Ten Doctors, many companions, and just about every enemy from the TV series that wasn't dead at the end of their arc.
• Comments: A fun read, although a little slow at times.

  • Unclouded TJ: Very well done but if you want to read through it faster try the second link as it's faster to download them and read rather than use the archive.

  • Revelo: I also recommend this, really well written, fantastic art and a TARDIS full of lore and continuity porn with some awesome and heartwarming parts thrown in too.

  • YYZ: Also to be recommended is one of Morris' subsequent stories, which features the Third Doctor in Elizabethan England.
  • I don't have a troper page yet, so I'll just sign using my real initials for now (and I'll change it once I make one), but I, ZT, agree, and would like to say that the other Doctor Who stories Rich has done, despite being crossovers with series I'm unfamiliar with, are awesome as well. Also, I feel that "The Ten Doctors" is possibly the greatest Doctor Who story ever.
  • Teorwyn: This is the story that introduced me to the Whoniverse. Even though I didn't have any idea what was going on when I started, the story, convoluted as it was, let me pick things up as I went along and left me wanting more. HIGHLY recommended.
  • Finister2: So good you'd think it was in canon.
  • MrThorfan64: One of my favourite stories in any medium. Better then most Doctor Who stories.
  • darksecret: For New Who fans, this is a great introduction to the Classic Doctors. Definitely worth a read.

• Synopsis: An author who specializes in short Doctor Who fics following Eleven and company, with occasional multi-chapter fics, and/or fics following other Doctors.
• Comments: When I say short, I mean short. One of his fics, titled Prey, is exactly 49 words long. 25 of those are his Once A Fanfic thanks yous at the end. And yet even at just 24 words for the story proper, it's a brilliant read.

The Crossover Adventures by Aron Toman

• Recommended by Silent Hunter
• Synopsis: Basically a bunch of audio plays with the Doctor (played by Toman) and some original companions, plus Frobisher, as well as characters from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Scream, and The Muppets.
  • Silent Hunter has only listened to "A Time Lord in Prince Henry's Court", a humorous tale set in 16th-century France, but it's a highly recommended tale of forbidden love, apples and Leonardo da Vinci.

Crystal Rose of Pollux

• Synopsis: Her Doctor Who Fanfics, which range from short drabbles to multi-chapter fics, focus mostly on the Second Doctor and Jamie. The full timeline of her works can be found here on Tumblr.
• Comments: I cannot recommend her writing enough. Her characterization is flawless, not just for the Second Doctor and Jamie, but for every canon character they come into with. In spite of her rather timey-wimey writing, which could potentially cause a snarl in the timeline, is excellently handled. Her plots are very engaging, and often quite funny. Best of all, however, is that fact that pretty much every chapter involves some heartwarming moment or other, often courtesy of Jamie.

Dobby's Socks

• Synopsis: A team of three authors that write really, really good Doctor Who fics with both really sad and really heartwarming moments. There are a mix of both One-shots and longer fics. Mainly about the 10th and 11th Doctors.

The Doctor Who Project by Bob Furnell and others

• Recommended by Clendy82
• Synopsis: Perhaps the largest and longest-running Doctor Who fan fiction series in existence. Running continuously since 1999, the Doctor Who Project has had twelve seasons and counting of high-quality prose, ranging from short stories all the way to epic length novels. The first two stories star the Seventh Doctor before he regenerates and the series continues with an original "Eighth" Doctor onwards. For fans of older Doctors, there is a "Brief Encounters" section featuring stories starring the television Doctors with elements of the main TDWP series. Today the series stars the TDWP Tenth Doctor and continues to provide the very best in new Doctor Who stories with an old school feel.
• Comments: With a series of such breadth and variety as the Doctor Who Project, there are going to be a lot of hits and misses as far as individual readers' preferences are concerned. Stories like "Nine Days" and "Journey's End" in the TDWP Ninth Doctor's era are held up as particular common favorites, though. To help deal with the fact that a dozen seasons' worth of near novel-length stories can lead to a bit of Archive Panic, the series editors have released a comprehensive series bible giving details on every published story, including trivia and plot synopses.

• Synopsis: The best Doctor/River fanfic writer on the web.
• Comments: Writes amazing plots from ever time period in the series, as well as brilliant AUs and romances. Especially recommended is Turkish Delight in the Moonlight.

• Synopsis: Explorations of the Doctor's enduring impact on the universe, funny bits that feel like they were lifted right out of the show, fix fics you never knew you needed... everything you could ask for from a fanfic writer, really.
• Comments: Her individual fics have been recommended often enough on this page already, but everything by Lyricwritesprose is worth reading. The stories feel like they were lifted out of canon, the characterization is always spot-on, and the writing is top-notch. Be sure to take a look at the TARDIS-centric pieces!

• Comments: A huge list of recs across many, many fandoms. The page owner is lost-spook, a fine ficcer in their own right.

The "This Time Round" Archive by various.

• Synopsis: A Meta Fic series set in a pub outside Doctor Who continuity, where the characters go between stories. And the surrounding town. And the creche, where the Spinoff Babies stay and have a storybook that forces their adult counterparts to act out fairy tales. And the High School AU, Primary/Elementary School AU, and Retirement Home AU.
• Comments: Particularly recommended is B.K. Willis's To Die For series in which, free from the burden of her canonical personality, Nyssa is reimagined as an inventive psychopath with a grudge on Adric (who keeps coming Back from the Dead). It's much better than that makes it sound.

• Comments: An impressively prolific, gloriously in-character Twelve/Missy writer, exploring the good (domesticity, cuddling, fondness, and bickering) the bad (conflicting, well, everything) and the ugly (astonishingly well-written smut) of their relationship. Everywhere from the humor of being walked in on (by a perfectly characterized Bill and Nardole, no less) to the heartwrenching reality of the decisions they have to make.

General Fics

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

• Synopsis: Rationally speaking, you know you’re not dead. Also, there aren’t eight other people in here, and you aren’t trapped in Jean-Paul Sartre’s vision of Hell. A Journey to the Center of the Mind during the early hours of his regeneration into the 10th Doctor, After Life is told from the perspective of the 9th Doctor. that looks into how the 9th Doctor blames himself and the 8th Doctor for the Time War, his previous eight selves' light treatment of the Daleks, and how the 9th Doctor tries to learn to forgive himself and the Eighth Doctor for destroying Gallifrey.
• Comments: An awesome read. Written in Second Person POV... and it works.

Alien Abduction by JJPOR

• Synopsis: UFOs! Men in Black! Psychedelic Hippies! Tentacle-Beasts from Dimension X! New Mexico, 1968: Evil lurks beneath the Diablo Mesa as the Doctor and Romana take on the might of the Military-Industrial Complex; the Military-Industrial Complex probably ought to be very scared.
• Comments: An excellent adventure that feels like you're watching it on television instead of reading it. JJPOR combines Douglas Adams-esque narrative wit with sharp dialogue and a host of intriguing and amusing side characters, including a woman who develops quite the adorable crush on Romana. Romana in particular shines in this piece, and plays an active role, equal to the Doctor's. Alien Abduction reminds this troper of the best of the Doctor Who novel writers. This is truly professional quality writing and the incorrigible Fourth Doctor at his best.

Alone by Melora maxwell

• Synopsis: Enter the mind of the last Dalek.
• Comments: An excellent novelization of the episode Dalek, as seen through the eyes of the titular Omnicidal Maniac Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds. It WILL pull your heartstrings.
  • I think this story is brilliant! Even though it's told through the first person POV of a Dalek, which may seem strange, the way the author handled the emotions, the perspective and the actual interpretation of the episode and the Dalek's "feelings" was superb! Definitely check it out if you're a fan of the Daleks.

And Then There Was One by Space Time Conundrum

• Synopsis: An AU in which the Great Time War occurred earlier in the timestream — specifically, the Doctor who fought it and ended it was Five. Except the Master put him under the Chameleon Arch and took his place, sending Five to Earth as a mild-mannered former combat medic. Now the Broken Bird Time Lord has made a life for himself in a small Canadian town, but there are things in the woods...
• Comments: Good psychology. Starts out slow, but gets quite intense — if you like subtle horror and wistfulness, give it a read.

The Angel in the House by Cryptile

• Synopsis: Weeping Angels have feelings, too, you know?
• Comments: By all means this should be a horror story, but it's so chock full of humour (dark, dark humour, granted) it genuinely makes people laugh. If a little nervously. Cause there is a Weeping Angel in the house, and there has been for years now. It also might have reproduced. Sweet dreams.

C-H-E-A-T-E-R by Lyricwritesprose

• Synopsis: Six gets arrested. For cheating at Scrabble. Or, actually, for doing it in his own special way.
• Comments: You don't need to play Scrabble to understand this and to laugh so hard milk will snort out of your nose. The cops arresting Six are the most beautifully exasperated Those Two Guys ever.

Children of Galifrey by Hand of Omega

• Synopsis: A series of drabbles featuring the Master and the Doctor as children. Can be considered slashy, but it's mostly friendship. Filled with Classic Who references and a lot of different genres.
• Comments: An amazing piece of work, honestly. Great for fans of New Who and Classic Who alike.

The Day(ish) Night(ish) Time(ish) of the Five(ish) Doctors Reboot by dbskyler

• Synopsis: Steven Moffat wants to do another multi-Doctor special. Will Peter, Colin, and Sylvester get any voicemail messages this time? Read on, because this fic is not about some flash-in-the-pan 500-million-dollar picture! This is important!
• Comments: If you enjoyed "The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot", chances are that you'll enjoy this too.

Lots of wonderful snark between 1936!Clara and himself - the two really come across as both true-to-canon standoffish and likeable, not to mention funny. Which is a good thing, because those aliens are definitely not nice. Run, you clever boy. And remember...

A Different World by Lady Clark-Weasley of Books (AU)

• Synopsis: In "Doomsday", it's the Doctor who gets trapped in the parallel world, leaving Rose alone. The TARDIS makes her into a Time Lord and she picks up the show's canon from there.
• Comments: For most of season three this is a pretty rudimentary AU fic with Rose largely just cut-and-pasted into the Doctor's place. However, when the Master shows up the story suddenly clicks into high gear as we get a great and truly different take on the events of those episodes. It largely stays that way from then on.
  • Quite contrived, a lot is unexplained, and the style feels a bit silly and forced.

A Discourse on the Medical Risks of Regeneration by Pencil Guardian

• Synopsis: On Gallifrey, the newly-minted Third Doctor gets a checkup.
• Comments: Despite the fairly simple sounding blurb, this is a thoughtful and at times quite funny fic with an ending that's not quite tragic. Not really a spoiler for The War Games, as everyone already knows what happens at the end.

• Synopsis: Humour - follows an Expanded Universe character's increasingly irritating encounters with the Doctor
• Comments: You don't need to follow the EU to find this absolutely hilarious - the lovesick Master, the Doctor completely blind to the chaos he causes, the one scene only visits by companions, and possibly the best humorous characterization. Just read the thing.

Flowers on Fire by etherati

• Synopsis: Author's summary: They burn, in the darkness and the light, circling round each other like binary stars just on the edge of nova. They both burn, but they do not burn the same. Theta, Koschei, and their successors.
• Comments: Long one-shot, spanning from academy era to new Who series three finale. All I can say is really really good. Really.
  • Seconded by seacloudsky. This fic is a nice study for those interested in the Master's and the Doctor's relationship, with a clear depiction of the author's interpretation of Gallifreyian society.

The Forgotten by AKs-on-show

• Synopsis: A young Australian woman named Sophie is forced to rely on someone for the first time in her life when the people around her start vanishing, and her universe literally begins to collapse. Her only hope is a man that calls himself the Doctor.
• Comments: The first in what looks like it'll be a rather long series. Featuring a new Doctor and a new companion, this story spends a lot of time introducing them. Interesting characters, even if the prose is a little boring. Give it a look! You might even enjoy it.
  • You'll find a lot more of it here, although the series seems dead now, and right at the moment everything was coming to a resolution. Sigh.

From This Day To The Ending Of The World, by Ice Blue Nothing

• Synopsis: The TARDIS, with the freshly regenerated Ninth Doctor inside, crashes onto a planet at the end of the war. Nine tries to put his life back together.
• Comments: What's that, you say? You want an Eight -> Nine regeneration story? That is completely awesome? Here you go, then.
  • Seconded by Master Ferret - This is the best fic, by far, that I've read of Nine's regeneration. The Time War sequence is beautifully written, and the work as a whole seamlessly transitions from Classic to New.

Frozen Hearts by bibliophile1887

• Status: Complete
• Synopsis: Peri comes to terms with the Doctor's new incarnation while the Doctor tries to keep her from freezing to death.
• Comments: It's quite lovely, a bit angsty, but very good; it really shows how much the Doctor cares about his companions, even after regenerating. I'm not sure if it is friendship or shipping, could be either.
  • All of what the above says and more. Peri and the Doctor's relationship is portrayed beautifully, as is the Doctor's regeneration.

The Game by Vic Taylor

• Synopsis: The Doctor and the Master play the Game, because by now, it is all they have left.
• Comments: This is a short oneshot detailing the dynamic between the Doctor and the Master, narrated as if by someone telling a story. It is well worth the five minutes it will take you to read, and it is so far one of the only fics I've seen that can say so much in so few words. It is poetic, painful, saddening, pity-inspiring, and most of all, accurate.

Holding the Moment by Hokuto

• Synopsis: The Time War is wrapping up and the Doctor's got a job to do.
• Comments: A particularly heartbreaking fic, particularly the bit with Susan at the end, which had this troper brought to near tears.

Holiday Jobs by johne/John Amend All

• Status: Complete
• Synopsis: Zoë Herriot, back in the late 21st century and mindwiped of her time travelling with the Doctor, receives an unusual job offer, which leads to even more unusual work. Essentially, futuristic whodunnits, sometimes with Whoniverse monsters, even giving Zoë a Watson in the form of OC Lily Carson.

• Synopsis: It. Is. Defended. Companion piece to "They Say", but it can stand alone.
• Comments: It's not who you'd think it is it's Ace and it's awesome.

It Will Come For Your Children

• Synopsis: A combined effort collection of drabbles and ficlets to see how many ways the Doctor can scrounge for new companions from the progeny of the old.
• Comments: Also check out Folie à Trois, a continuation of Success, which isn't listed.

A Kinder Cartography by Noldo

• Synopsis: A map of the world in names; the Doctor and his companions.
• Comments: Something different. Noldo writes word-games and format-games and mind-games, and they twist together so hard they make your chest ache. A character study of sorts.

Le Donne Che Piangono (The Weeping Women) by Aralias

• Status: Complete
• Synopsis: Gallifrey is silencing its women.
• Coments: A haunting look at Gallifrey during the war, that weaves together Doctor Who Expanded Universe canon with The End of Time and offers a (tragic) explanation as to why Romana wasn't present then.

Lies Told To Children another excellent fic by Lyricwritesprose

• Synopsis: The Doctor explains why he travels with humans, or possibly just spins a tale.
• Comments: A really beautiful fanfic that encapsulates why the Doctor does what he does, and the character change that made him the Doctor to begin with.

Lost Luggage and Lost Souls by Nemo the Everbeing

• Recommended by: Veanne
• Status: Complete
• Synopsis: Buses Are for Freaks. Seventh and Ace, a pair of definitive freaks, are taking a Greyhound bus to St. Louis and end up clashing with a different tier of villains than usual.
• Pairing: Very, very subtle Seven/Ace (of course, lay one finger on her and you're doomed, but the romantic undercurrent is very subtle).
• Comments: Tons upon tons better than it sounds. Good psychology, noirish, CSI-ish feel, not just because of the two cops in the background, but primarily it's the Doctor getting to save something smaller than the reality itself for a change. And it's really well done.

The Moment Has Been Prepared For by Lurky McLurklurk (character death)

• Synopsis: Donna's granddaughter watches as she dies.
• Comments: A brilliant piece of Fix Fic that's great for those suffering after the ending of "Journey's End" (major spoilers for JE, however).

• Synopsis: The continuing adventures of the Doctor's daughter. A creature of first experiences, she is growing and learning exponentially, traveling the universe in the year 6012 (New Byzantine Calendar) and trying to lead the kind of life that would make her father proud: an exemplary one.

Mother's Day by nostalgia

• Status: Complete
• Synopsis: Susan Smith is in love with an alien.
• Comments: A tragic but lovely take on one of the pieces of Doctor Who lore that most fans would prefer to forget: the Eighth Doctor's assertion that he is "half-human, on his mother's side" and does a good job with making it fit in the wider mythos. Has multiple sequels: one with the Seventh Doctor (here), two with the Twelfth Doctor (here and here), one with the Eighth Doctor (here), and one with the Academy-era Doctor (here).

Mrs. Pond and the Doctor by Memory Dragon

• Status: Complete (three stories)
• Synopsis: Amelia Pond (Williams!) steps off the TARDIS, still in her wedding dress, to find that instead of in the Orient Express IN SPACE!, she got dumped into a Sea Devil dungeon. In The '70s (or possibly The '80s). At least there is the Doctor there, if not exactly the one she'd be expecting, so he can help her pass the time. Also chocolate, aliens, monsters, the always smooth-talking Master and all these Good-Looking Privates of UNIT prove to be a helpful distraction. If only she didn't miss Rory so much...
• Comments: A fun, upbeat series of stories. Their particular strength lies in Amy's point-of-view regarding fashion, attitudes and how cute the Master is.

The New Three Doctors by Jason.

• Synopsis: Amy and Rory are gone, causing the Doctor to finally snap. In a fit of rage between him and his wife, he crashes the TARDIS on earth, causing something to happen that hasn't happened in a while.

Operation Awesome by AND

• Synopsis: A different sort of Journey's End Fix Fic. Does Donna really need to remember her travels with the Doctor to unlock the confidence and strength she found on her travels with him? Doesn't that suggest that there's something wrong with living on Earth? Sarah Jane and Torchwood gang up to save Donna - one way or another.
• Comments: The title says it all, really. Best Journey's End Fix Fic I've read.

A closer look at The Second Doctor, and how very vital he was and will be to them all...even if they can't remember him."
• Comments: The fic is very obviously celebratory of the 2nd Doctor, and finds very interesting ways of showing how he left his mark on all his future incarnations without stretching canon too much. The reason I absolutely adore this fic, though, is what it does to canon without technically breaching it; before reading this, I completely dismissed a lot of ideas in the Expanded Whoniverse, such the Looms and the history of Gallifrey, Rassilon, Omega, and particularly the Other. This fic looked at it all in a completely new way and I lapped it up! This author properly paces backstory and foreshadowing, enough to whet the reader's appetite, and does an excellent job of giving characters introspective/tender moments without going OOC.

• Comments: This story features a pretty dark take on the Ninth Doctor, who was never exactly a sunshiney kind of guy to begin with. Fortunately the writer never forgets that the Doctor is, in fact, a Big Damn Hero which keeps the story firmly on the side of pretty damn good. Great acidic dialogue between Nine and the girl (Emily), as well.
  • Seconded ten times over by CaptainColdCutCliche. This fic needs to be read. The dialogue is wonderful, and Nine's characterization is just incredible.

Warning for some graphically described Body Horror in the last chapter.
  • This is among the best fanfics I have ever read. It's about Jack, but there's also some good stuff about the Doctor's PTSD, and the adventure part of it is creative and believable.

• Comments: This fic truly is a binge read. I'm absolutely in love with it! The protagonist, Lilly, is a very human and realistic character. She is an 18-year-old college student who absolutely loves Doctor Who, especially number 9, but when she mysteriously finds herself in the whoverse her life becomes something of a nightmare. With The Doctor not believing she's from a universe where his life is a children's show, being diagnosed as "time sensitive", and caught in a 5 billion year paradox Lilly needs to learn how to navigate through life with The Doctor without accidentally destroying the multi-verse.
  • Seconded strongly by this troper. LovelyAmberLight writes a very good Nine, brooding, dark, and occasionally goofy, with definite fatherly tendencies towards Lilly. Jackie Tyler, of all characters, is given a wonderful introduction and the character development she always deserved. Also, the main character, Lilly, is the best OC I've ever seen, in any fic. She is very real, terrified by the new universe she's in, but still incredibly brave. The plot is complex, twisting, and full of paradoxes - be sure to pay attention! All in all, an excellent fic.

And as someone who knows the author, on ff.net, she also has various crossover fics within Doctor Who with other realistic fic authors involving OC Companions. It's a brutal, mind-bending, cosmic-scale take on the Time War, complete with some of the most terrifying uses of the timey-wimey ball anyone's ever come up with—all in less than ten thousand words. Teyke's Doctor is alive on the page, walking that same line between "almost human" and "really, really not" that he does on the show. Also, the ending. You will never forget the ending.

• Comments: I can't say enough good about this fic. It's of medium length, and will probably take only about an hour to get through, but it'll be an hour well spent! Four and Sarah Jane are almost perfectly in-character, the pacing is perfect, the OCs are amusing and believable, and the ending of each chapter is a mild cliffhanger. In other words, this is an episode from the show that was never made. Not to mention the fact that the friendship moments between Four and Sarah are adorable.

• Comments: Of course, some people have a grudge against AI for taking most of their jobs (writing, drawing, reading, etc.), but this AI-experiment with ChatGPT to create a Doctor Who fanfic is quite interesting. Love it or hate it, this is something I think is worth checking out if you're curious about the capabilities of artificial intelligence in fanfiction.

• Comments: There is a lot going on in The Power of the Doctor, and that meant that some elements weren't explored in as great a depth as they could have been. This fic simplifies the Master's plan (no Daleks) and revises and expands the Grand Theft Me aspects. In particular, while watching the episode, I found myself wishing that they had done a straightforward "Freaky Friday" Flip of the Doctor and the Master...and was delighted to find such a well-written fic in which the author did exactly that. Also, I really liked Heimeldat's resolution to the Cyberman plot.

In fact, with a few alterations; it could suffice as an actual Doctor Who story in its own right. It just feels very natural and even serves an alternate series finale to Code Lyoko. It just happens to have The Doctor in it.

• Comments: These two fics are amazingly well written, all of the dialog is in character and it, in my opinion, meshes the Whoniverse and the Buffyverse quite well. The third one is currently in progress, though, and the writer's music selections in the second one leave something to be desired.

• Comments: Although this crosses over with a concept album by My Chemical Romance, it is by no means an RPF! The Eleventh Doctor shares the starring role here with the fiery-haired rebel leader, Party Poison; the sequel adds Clara (and Cybermen). Longfic that's right up there with Moffat's best episodes where timey-whimeyness and unexpected turns are concerned. The author has a great grasp on the Doctor's personality as well as on the storytelling of Doctor Who in general. She's also seriously good at invoking the desolate post-apocalyptic world of the Killjoys and creates enjoyable characters in a story filled with action and awesome that can also be, at times, surprisingly heartwarming. Some knowledge of the Killjoys universe is required - though I believe the first story at least can be read even without that - as well as familiarity with the latest series of Doctor Who.

If you despise the Incubators and would love to see QB's Omniscient Morality License shoved back down his throat, I guarantee you that Sec is going to be your new best friend.
  • It is a shame that this has only 5 chapters. The fic is beautifully done, with storylines that are very interesting, (what the Doctor would do to the QB would be awesome to see) and the bloody Dalek Inquisitor General wiping so many daleks.....the chills!

It uses Who as a base and then blends in other series perfectly: Star Wars (Old Republic era), Star Trek, The Dresden Files, Legend of Korra, MechWarrior, Mass Effect, and plenty of others as well. The main character (known as the SI Doctor by WOG) is both likable and relatable. This series needs more attention than it is currently getting. See for yourself.
  • By far one of the best fanfictions I have ever read. And I don't believe that it is that much of a Gary Stu (at least not more than the real Doctor himself). While a Self-Insert Fic, the story is very well thought out and some has ideas that I have never seen in a Fan Fic before. It has absolutely hilarious moments (like the reactions of people who knew Doctor Who as a TV show before, and don't let me start with the Power Rangers) and very heart-wrenchingly sad scenes. And often it really feels like Doctor Who. I still have no idea why it is so unknown, so go and give it a read!

It also puts some characters like Excalibur in new light. It actually makes you feel sympathy with either an annoying character or just a pure comic relief character. The bad guy is powerful enough to be a real danger to the various powerful good guys.

• Comments: Machiavelli tells a story that is at once funny, heartfelt, action packed and horrifying, all while staying true to both universes and characters. All of the Eva characters get moments to shine, and the Sherlock/Watson like dynamic of the Doctor and Shinji is a joy. While it primarily features the Tenth Doctor, Machiavelli finds a creative way to work in the Time-Lords other incarnations at many points. Just read it, it's good.

• Comments: A hilarious, self-aware fairy-tale that will have you in stitches. Sarah makes a brilliant Dorothy, inquisitive, plucky and helpful, and the other Whoniverse denizens also acquit themselves very well (Romana I is Glinda - don't tell us it doesn't suit her).

In her bid to get answers, Twilight embroils herself and her friends in an ancient war between two powerful races, one that may well destroy the multiverse with the aid of a Horror from Beyond.
  • The two races are NOT the Time Lords and the Daleks, you've likely never heard of one of these races, even you Whovians out there. Yes, that was a challenge.
  • While the identity of the races isn't a secret (the Hervoken are named in the first sentence, a clear description of Carrionites follows later in the chapter), not only is it a treat for those who've seen "The Shakespeare Code" and read the New Series Adventure Forever Autumn, but also an amazing re-imagining of the MLP movie villains Hydia, Draggle, and Reeka as Carrionites.
• Comments: A more ambitious read than others as it is written as a Doctor Who episode first and a crossover second. Very solid writing and spot-on characterizations can be found in this cool fic. If you give it a chance and get past the head-scratching nature of the premise, this fic becomes a tightly written joy to read. The Doctor's characterization as "Ten but a pony" creates some very interesting (read: hi-freaking-larious) interactions with the MLP main cast and also makes for some truly awesome moments; his lines are best read in a David Tennant voice. The characterization of the ponies is spot on, beyond my ability to convey in words actually, so it is better read than told. GO. READ.
  • Seconded here, the quality of the writing and characterisation speaks for itself, but it also gets points for the way it makes things Darker and Edgier while more optimistic and cheerful at the same time. The way it expands on the Friendship is Magic universe and the sheer depth it goes into things is amazing.

• Comments: I don't normally recommend unfinished fics, but this one is so professionally written I'll do this for the faint hope the author will see it and finish. Seriously. It's worth reading for the scene of Eight playing repairman alone. Also, nice, strong psychology and a pleasant horrory tingle when the lights go out.

• Comments: This is the first in a series called 'The Guardians of the Universe', and it's a very intricate and detailed universe that uses material from Old Who, New Who, SJA, and basically everything within the Whoniverse. Like the show itself, it has season-arcs, spanning every story, but also deals with an alien-of-the-week type of situation. I loved it the moment I started reading, but part 3 (The Companion Connection) is by far the best one so far. It centers around Rose, but it also features every single one of the other companions and their Doctors. A must-read for every Rose lover out there.
  • I agree with the reviewer above. This series is incredibly detailed, well thought out, stays faithful to the characters - both canon and original - and the romance is well done. It's really awesome how every single classic and modern companion and character is used, how there's a mixture of rewritten canon episodes and original episodes, how good the OC's are, and how intricate and engaging the overall plotting is. Just keep this in mind if you want to read it; the author, Lumendea, is a BIG fan of Rose and Rose/Doctor... and I don't just mean the Ninth and Tenth Doctor's. I don't care, but some people might.

• Synopsis: In which Five and Nyssa attend a very fancy party and almost sleep together thanks to a telepathic field, which is Played for Drama for once. Of course, things are complicated by court intrigue, assasination plot and rigid traditions of a planet that takes Classical Mythology perhaps a little bit too seriously. Rich worldbuilding and Love Hurts. Also Sweet Polly Oliver (sort of) and Bizarre Alien Biology re: childbearing. It's confusing.
• Pairing(s): Five/Nyssa, but he's chin-deep in denial.
• Comments: Intricate to the point of confusing. If you like Five to suffer, give it a read. The author's specialty seems to be whumping Five and having him sleep with Nyssa, judging from their other fics, but in this particular one, the latter gets interrupted before they get to it. All the more time for the former.

• Comments: There isn't a way to overstate how phenomenal this fanfiction is. It follows the life of Alan Turing from the end of WWII to the end of his life, and details his complicated relationship with the Doctor during that time. Without giving away too much (though nothing history doesn't already tell you) the story's ending has left me in tears both times I've read it. This is poignant, passionate, complex and ultimately heartbreaking.^note This is set in the Eighth Doctor Adventures continuity, but shouldn't be too hard to follow without having read The Turing Test.

In This World You Cannot Change by Harold Saxon

• Synopsis: Post "Journey's End", AU. A mind-wiped Donna Noble unwittingly resurrects the Master, who has lost all memory of his past crimes—and his madness. Transported back in time to the start of Harold Saxon's reign of terror, the newly-sane Master and former companion find themselves fighting alongside the resistance during the Year That Never Was.
• Comments: This story is, without a doubt, the most well-written, intriguing Doctor Who fic I have ever encountered. Expertly plotted and paced, it takes the potential Crack!Fic premise of a Master/Donna pairing and makes it utterly, heart-breakingly believable. The ending is a guaranteed tear-jerker, and one you won't soon forget.

Be warned that the fic is slightly NSFW (its only as explicit as your imagination, though) and that there are huge spoilers for season 8 of the revival series.

• Synopsis: How to become the Master. Academy-era fic spanning the journey of Koschei and Theta, from acolytes to Time Lords, friends to lovers to enemies to something else again.
• Comments: There are thousands of Academy era fics covering the Doctor and the Masters Fanon love affair and history together, but none as wonderful as this. The author said she wanted to avoid the "Doctor and Master at Hogwarts" cliche, and she succeeds wonderfully. K/T isn't the focus - it's a character study of Koschei and his descent from a (relatively) innocent boy to a man the reader can see as having the seeds of Delgado's Master. Also has a DVD commentary that's well worth checking out.

• Synopsis: A fan-made opening for a hypothetical Saturday-Morning animated series of Doctor Who, done in a style and tone of Gravity Falls. Starring the Twelfth Doctor and a younger Mabel-esque Clara, it is made with the intent of being Lighterand Softer with a more humorous bent to it than the main show.
• Comments: Like many fan-made things, it makes you wish it were real. Plus, if you are a fan of Gravity Falls or have watched the show, you can really appreciate it even more. A must-see if just for 40 seconds of fan-made fun and enjoyment.

• This is a very well written fan video, animated and voiced by the same person, and it neatly fills the plothole of how Dalek Caan got into the time war in the first place. It's three parts plus an epilogue, and is well worth a watch.

• Not a fanfic, but a fan-movie, animated with loving care and (mostly) voiced by audio clips of existing Doctor Who footage (supplying new voices as necessary)
• Synopsis: Now finished with roughly 11 minutes of footage as a mock trailer for a whole fictive anime season. The "plot" consists of Davros and the Daleks struggling with the Master (Two of them!) and the Cybermen over control of Japan while the Third Doctor arrives and meets the typical anime Action Girl for a companion. A number of spiffy action scenes are shown, including the Brigadier doing a Worf Barrage on a Cyberman ship and a Five Rounds Rapid by some American soldiers on a squad of Daleks. There are furthermore cameos of Sutekh the Destroyer, the Sontaran Battlefleet and the Supreme Dalek. It also stars professional voice actors Sachika Souno and Phillip Sacramento.

• Comments: One of the most beautiful scenes written by Andrew Cartmel in his entire career. Sums up the Doctor’s character and all its majesty neatly. When you see his take on the script, however, you’ll realize Sylvester Mccoy truly was the right man for the job.

• Comments: An class film that clearly went above and beyond. Yes it's an amateur short film, but it was made by people who obviously had a ball making it.

• Comments: It's excellently edited, and the plot is fascinating. It's not overtly shippy despite Rose's return, and the twist is one you probably didn't see coming.
