Go To

This is a partial character sheet for Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger. Subjective trope and audience reactions should go on the YMMV page.

    open/close all folders

Tropes applying to all of them
  • The Good Kingdom: Apart from Shugoddam (see below), all of them are peaceful, prosperous kingdoms under their respective rulers. Shugoddam eventually joins with the other four later on with Gira's ascension to the throne.
  • Sigil Spam: The royals and officials of each kingdom bear their respective emblems on their uniforms.

Kingdom of Shugoddam

Emblem of Shugoddam
Capital: Caucasus Kabutonote

The land of industry, it is regarded as the strongest of the five kingdoms, due to it being the residence of God Kuwagata, as well as its high military power.

    General Tropes
  • Animal Theme Naming: Citizens of Shugoddam are named after various types of beetle, with the royal family being partial to the Japanese Beetle Brothers.
  • Badass Family: All 4 known monarchs of Shugoddam are part of the Husty family line, and what they all share in common is being Defiant to the End Determinators.
  • Distinguishing Mark: Members of the Husty family have two small red lines on the right side of the forehead.
  • Easily Swayed Population: The people of Shugoddam, compared to the other kingdoms, seemingly vacillate in their opinions depending on the geopolitical picture of the time. Racles has their loyalty all the way up to his second duel with Gira in #20, upon which they switch allegiance to the latter, holding it for two years and change until Gira gets transported to Earth, during which a newly-returned Racles works with Dagded to secure his people's loyalty once more.
  • Empire with a Dark Secret: The ruler of Shugoddam is the only one aware of the existence of the Galacticinsects with the king's task being to ensure that there's enough entertainment for Dagded or else Tikyu will be destroyed, thus forcing the world into an eternal cycle of war and violence. Gira is the exception to this due to his predecessor making sure he didn't know about their existence until Dagded's attack.
  • Fantasy Counterpart Culture: It appears to be inspired by various medieval European cultures.
  • Forced into Evil: #43 clarifies the kingdom's situation as this. From the very beginning, each ruler of Shugoddamn was forced by Dagded to continue the war with the Bognaarok or else the entire world of Tikyu would be destroyed. The Husty family spent over 2,000 years plotting a way to get out of this situation without alerting any of the Galacticinsects of what they were doing.
  • The Good Kingdom: Subverted. The kingdom has an outwardly positive image due to being the strongest of the kingdoms, but its incumbent government is quickly revealed to be incredibly corrupt. For starters, most of its residents live in poverty, food is scarce, the royal soldiers constantly harass the citizens for money, and the supposed good king is actually a tyrant who uses the Bognaarok invasion to try and Take Over the World. Then it becomes double subverted after Gira takes the throne from Racles. The revelations of #43 further complicate this.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: It's still under debate whether it is spelt "Shugoddom" or "Shugoddam", the latter being unfortunately close to the English cuss word goddamn.
  • Long Game: For two thousand years, the Husty family line has been planning for the moment where they would be able to destroy Dagded.
  • Meaningful Name: Its name contains the Japanese word for protection (守護, shugo).
  • The Starscream: The entire Husty dynasty is this to Dagded.
  • Steampunk: Shugoddam's tech level outside of communications appears to be this, being the kingdom of industry.

Rcules Husty/Ohkuwagata Ohger (II) (unmarked spoilers)

Rclues Husty/Ohkuwagata Ohger (II)/Shugo Mask

Portrayed by: Masato Yano (live); Yasuhiko Imai [main series], Tetsuya Aoki [Secret of King Racles] (suit)
Young Racles portrayed by: Yu Fujii

The king of Shugoddam, who is widely regarded by his people as a kind and wise ruler. In actuality, he's a ruthless tyrant who uses the current Bognaarok crisis to try and take power from the other kingdoms. He is later revealed to be Gira's older brother.

As Ohkuwagata Ohger, he fights alongside God Kuwagata ZERO, specializing in a relentless "power play" style of combat.

Tropes applying to him in general

  • 0% Approval Rating: Zigzagged. In his own kingdom, Rcules is near-universally beloved, the only exceptions being Gira and some of his associates. Outside of Shugoddam, however, everyone who has an opinion of Rcules abhors him. However, in #19 and #20, this fades away within Shugoddam's citizens, leaving Racles with no supporters to back him up, especially with Gorōge once he sees Rcules's true colors. While Rcules reveals his true heart towards the planet's last stand against the Galactinsects, the tyrannical act he had to put up to save the planet means that his reputation is in complete tatters, though he understood this.
  • All for Nothing: By #20, all his mechanizations have failed to get him leadership of the world as he desired, and only served to cost him everything he had... So it would seem...
  • Allegorical Character: For much of the series, Rcules represents power-hungry dictators who are bent on invading sovereign countries given that his goal at the start of the series is to conquer the neighboring kingdoms to rule all of them. Towards the end though, he represents most real-life examples of Well Intentioned Extremists, as someone willing to throw away their reputation for the sake of who and what they care for.
  • Arch-Enemy: He views Dagded as one since the day he masterminded every tragedy happening in the show, since then he began a long-term plan to bring the alien invader down.
  • Bad Boss: To be expected of a tyrant, though he's able to hide it from the public well. He fully planned to invoke You Have Outlived Your Usefulness on the researcher who activated his mech before the series started and gets mad at Douga multiple times for doing his appointed job of expressing concerns. This ends up being an act.
  • Batman Gambit: #41 reveals he has been pulling a long one through the entire series just to have Dagded give him the power to kill immortals, and despite everything getting in his way he still managed to spin the situation in his favor.
  • Becoming the Mask: While his Tyrant King persona started as an act, he admits to Yanma that he became Drunk with Power for real, actually enjoying inflicting suffering upon others.
  • Beneath the Mask: Underneath the power-hungry tyrant is a determined man who knows all about his shortcomings as a human being yet cannot find any other way to defeat the seemingly omnipotent being responsible for the death of his father and countless others.
Racles:(internally) I am weak. Unwilling to fight on my own...Who justifies his crimes...Who became a pitiful Jester. All so...I could entrust Gira with everything.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Racles's sense of entitlement means he can't stand anyone questioning his choices or suggesting he might be wrong. His entire vendetta against Yanma began when the other king saw through his ruse and refused to go along with it. His downfall comes when Gira tries to get him to apologize for his actions to the people, but Racles is so furious he unintentionally exposes his true colors to the entire nation. Like most of his tyrannical self, this was just a small part of a very long con.
    • As Shidejim and Kamejim learn, using people close to him as a bargaining chip or killing them, like they did to Vedalia and Boshimar, is bound to evoke his ire.
    • Dagded however pushed a button that led Racles to plan a seventeen-year-long revenge: treating lives, especially those of his subjects, as insignificant.
  • Beyond Redemption: He invokes this in #20 by rejecting Gira's last chance offer to simply apologize to the kingdom, prompting Gira to continue the duel that ends in Racles's defeat. This doesn't change after he joins with the Galactinsects, and actively aids in the destruction of his own planet, though it eventually comes out to be a very large act. During his speech to Rita in #43, he even outright states that he shouldn't be forgiven.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: With Dethnaarok VIII for the first half of the series. While they both oppose each other, King Racles's main plan is to subjugate all the nations into Shugoddam with him as their supreme ruler. He also sees his people as nothing but tools for his conquest.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Was willing to defy his own father's plan to turn Gira into a mindless weapon to use against Dagded, choosing to instead send him away without his memories. This turns out to be a good thing for Tikyū in the long run.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Inverted; he wears a blue version of his original royal garb in the second half of the series, but unlike Yanma he is still firmly rooted in villainy. This ends up being subverted once his end goals are revealed.
  • Broken Pedestal: To Gira, whose faith in him is shattered after he sees Racles's refusal to help his own subjects and learns his plan to betray the other monarchs, which completely goes against what he believes a king should be. By #20, he has lost all of Shugoddam's support by going on an unhinged rant on why he is fit to be king, belittling his people in the process. However, he manages to become a Rebuilt Pedestal towards Gira in their showdown against the Galactinsect ruler, but his reputation has permanently tanked after his tyrant schtick with him explicitly wanting all records of his plans and actions against the Galacticinsects to be removed.
  • The Bully: His attempts to strongarm Rita into falsely declaring Gira guilty in #5 cement him as this, threatening to invade and destroy Gokkan if he doesn't like the result. Also like most bullies of his type, his bluster ends up exposing him as a tyrant and destroying any goodwill he might have had left with the other monarchs. The only reason he's still in good favor with the public of Shugoddam is due to several clashes with Gira where he managed to make himself the good guy until #20. Like everything else, this is an act.
  • Cain and Abel: As #5 reveals, he's the Cain to Gira's Abel. As it turns out, he was invoking this in order to make Gira strong enough to destroy Dagded.

  • The Chessmaster: Revealed in episode 42 that practically everything he did in the series was one long con to put himself into the position where he could help Gira and the others gain resources and abilities to defeat Dagded, even if it meant presenting himself as a ruthless tyrant who was only out for himself.
  • The Comically Serious: His strait-laced reaction to the most absurd of situations is a frequent source of comedy, as seen in the various Imagine Spots the team has.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: To Don Murasame. Both of them are palette swaps of their respective Red Ranger, are an antagonistic force, have their own all-black version of the main mecha that the overall team uses, and end up joining the heroes by the end of the story. However, whereas Murasame's ties to the overall story were limited to his character arc and a tiny bit of the B-plot regarding the Juto, as well as having been established midway through the show, Racles is established from the first episode to be a main threat, even moreso than Dethnaarok VIII at times. Murasame was originally a tool made to kill that almost blindly followed the orders of his "Mother" while trying to figure out his place in the world, pulling a Heel–Face Turn at the end of the story. Racles is - formerly - the ruler of his own nation that is Good All Along and faked his loyalty to Dagded in order to find the perfect moment for him to strike back.
  • Control Freak: Racles's worldview is that he's the nation and the people are merely tools to serve him without complaint. As a result, Racles can't stand for anything not to go his way, as he feels entitled to whatever he wants. Once again, it's part of his act.
  • The Dark Side Will Make You Forget: By his own admission, while he started with good intentions, he eventually went Drunk with Power and became a tyrant for real. It took Gira's defeating him to snap him out of it.
  • Death Glare: That is how he greets extremely unpleasant surprises, such as the reveal of Kamejim spying on him as Boshimar, or when Shidejim uses Vedalia's name and knowledge as a bargaining chip.
  • Demoted to Dragon: He starts out as one of two main antagonists going against the Ohsama Sentai alongside Dethnaarok VIII. After his return post-Time Skip, however, he's established to be subservient to Dagded, ruling Shugoddam in the name of the Galactinsects. This turns out to be part of Racles' plan to defeat Dagded once and for all by gaining the latter's confidence.
  • Diabolical Mastermind: As the Jester, who replacing Goma, he proclaims that he will make up for his lack of special abilities with his intellect. To showcase his worth, he reveals Gira's true origins to the populace, has Dagded force him to control the Shugods, and plans to get a portion of the population off the planet to start conquering other planets as part of an eternal cycle of suffering with Dagded watching in complete glee. This was all part of a plan to trick Dagded into giving him Immortal Breaker powers to end the Galacticinsects King's life.
  • Didn't See That Coming:
    • He didn't see Yanma getting suspicious as early as he did.
    • Gira being able to wield his stolen OhgerCalibur and awaken God Kuwagata catches him completely flat-footed. It's the only thing from his entire plan to take down Dagded that he didn't account for happening.
    • Racles lets Kaguragi's flattery get the best of him to the point where he tells the latter about the OhgerCrownLance, and is later blindsided when Kaguragi steals it and gives it to Gira. This is quickly followed up by the Bognaarok using the treaty with Shugoddam to launch a coup while he was away as well.
  • Did You Just Scam Cthulhu?: It took seventeen years and a lot of road bumps, but Racles manages to trick Dagded into giving him the power to kill an immortal, which he promptly uses on the Galactinsect king himself.
  • Dirty Coward: The aftermath of the Bognarok invasion of Shugoddam sees Racles more interested in saving his own skin than those of his people, even willing to kill Douga to do so. It was a needed part of his plan.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: He is finally deposed as the ruler of Shugoddam in #20 when Gira defeated him in combat.
  • Disney Death: #20 sees him fall off the same cliff as Gira did, making everyone presume that he died in the trial-by-combat. #34 reveals that he's very much alive and well by unknown means, and #42 reveals that Suzume helped conceal his presence and true motives until he was ready for his next move.
  • Dressed to Oppress: He wears a red and black version of an 18th-century style military uniform in order to emphasize his status as a tyrannical ruler.
  • The Emperor: His claimed ambition is to become the sole ruler of Tikyū in the name of "justice"; to that end he deliberately stays out of the assault on Shugoddam, as if hoping that the other monarchs would get themselves killed in the fighting.
  • Entitled Bastard: At the end of the day, Racles believes he's entitled to respect as king and rule the world, despite ultimately being a tyrannical despot who deserves neither, as Gira calls him out on. This is ultimately his biggest weakness, as appealing to his sense of entitlement is the easiest way to manipulate him. Again, it's an act.
  • Evil All Along: He initially appears to be a benevolent ruler and possible Big Good...only for him to actually be an Evil Overlord who wants to Take Over the World and views his people as completely expendable if he gets what he wants. #41 at least reveals him as a Hidden Agenda Villain whose real target was Dagded, though it's ultimately Double Subverted. He did start with genuinely good intentions, but admits he got Drunk with Power and became a tyrant for real even if killing Dagded was always his intention.
  • Evil Genius: When forcing his way to become one of Dagded's jesters, he states that he will compensate for his lack of special powers with his own intellect and cunning, which he uses to formulate a plan to get Goma killed.
  • Evil Is Petty: An act, of course.
    • He decides that N'Kosopa will be the kingdom he'll invade first all because Yanma saw who he really was and promptly defied him.
    • Him setting up Goma to die fighting the monarchs is also this, just to get Dagded's approval. To say Dagded was furious upon learning this is an understatement.
  • Evil Versus Evil: He opposes Bognaarok and fights with them, but he himself is a self-centered tyrant who also wants to Take Over the World. Again subverted in #42.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Arc 2 sees him sporting a much shorter and slicked-back hairstyle.
  • Expy:
    • Of Hyuuga from Seijuu Sentai Gingaman. They are both older brothers to the protagonist group's red rangers who embark a dark path to help them and their world. While Hyuuga was forced to become an Antihero, Racles accepted the role of Antivillain.
    • Of Char Aznable from Mobile Suit Gundam. Checks a number of boxes: as Ohkuwagata Ohger, he's primarily emblazoned in shining silver, comes armed with his own OhgerCalibur, and he's the brother of one of the main characters who is also his greatest obstacle to his goals, or at least at first. This is taken more literally with his return as Shugo Mask, and even wears gold referencing Char's Hyaku Shiki, as well the way he uses Goma as a Sacrificial Lamb mirrors Char's betrayal of Garma Zabi. Even further when he reveals himself in #41 as a Dragon with an Agenda whose true goal was to destroy Dagded, much like how Char planned to bring down the Zabi family from within. His true alignment ultimately makes him closer to The Mentor archetype.
  • Fake Ultimate Hero: Racles presents himself as a hero to his kingdom, able to transform into a King-Ohger, and The Good King. In reality, he's a tyrant plotting world domination and using a false Shugod to transform. As it turns out, Racles was playing with the trope all along; not only were his actions done in the name of the greater good, his actions also ensured that history would not remember him fondly.
  • False Prophet: Racles pretends to be the chosen hero of a Shugod as Ohkuwagata Ohger and opposing evil. In truth, God Kuwagata decided to pass him over for his younger brother Gira, and Racles is actually a tyrant seeking to Take Over the World and willing to sacrifice his people in mass to do so. Furthering the image is a false god of his own creation supporting him rather than a true Shugod. Again, part of an act.
  • Fatal Flaw: His sense of entitlement. Racles feels entitled to everything he wants and the praise of others to the point not getting what he wants seems to be a foreign concept. A major reason Kaguragi and his sister's gambit works perfectly is simply that flattery and apparently falling head over heels in love with him are simply things Racles feels entitled to and expects. He also doesn't see the possibility the Bognaarok were using his 'peace treaty' with them to their own ends coming. Both of these bite him hard in the end. It ultimately ends up costing him everything, as he feels so entitled to being king that the idea of actually apologizing for his actions is something he can't stomach, because he genuinely sees his people as tools to serve him without complaint in #20. Subverted, as he deliberately plays this up as a part of his long-term gambit.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Racles is certainly capable of showing decorum and navigating the pretense of polite conversation, yet he doesn't hold said façade long and inevitably leans towards threatening the party he's dealing with if he thinks he has one-up on them.
  • First-Episode Spoiler: His "true" nature as part of the Big Bad Ensemble was kept hidden in preview material, but is what literally kickstarts the entire story.
  • Foil: Gira is a rebel orphan who uses evil as a façade so he can protect others, while Racles is a king who uses good as a façade with his plans to usurp the other kingdoms. As it turns out, both are much more similar than expected.
  • Good All Along: It turns out Racles's machinations were all but preparing to defend Tikyu from the Galactinsects, as he already knew of Shugoddam's history with the said invaders and had devised a long-term plan to defeat them. Downplayed, however, as Racles himself admits he got Drunk with Power and became a tyrant for real, even if his intentions were ultimately to kill Dagded.
  • Good Costume Switch: After his good intentions are revealed and he's recruited to serve as the Kings' "tool", he switches back to his pre-timeskip outfit only this time he wears his Coat Over the Shoulder.
  • The Greatest Story Never Told: His plan to kill the Galacticinsects and end Dagded's reign will never be known to the public with him only being known as Shugoddam's most evil king, something he accepts without complaint.
  • The Heavy: While not part of the Bognaarok, Rcles forms the more persistent antagonist for the heroes due to his relationship with Gira.
  • Hero of Another Story: Though he's anything but heroic (at least everyone thought at the time), he's the main character of the spinoff The Secret of King Racles.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: Rcles started out pretending to be an evil king to trick Dagded while he prepared his plan to kill him behind the Galactinsect King's back. However, by Racles' own admission, at some point he started Becoming the Mask and became a tyrant for real.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: His attempt to get the other monarchs killed by not joining them in battle and take over their kingdoms completely backfires, as it prompts Gira to rebel and God Kuwagata to make him Kuwagata Ohger to save the day instead. As a result, all Racles's plan got him was a new enemy and losing his birthright. As it turns out, it was just an unexpected roadblock that was quickly managed around in his plan.
  • Humans Are the Real Monsters: Rcles proved to be the, if not, most blackhearted human being compared to the likes of Dethnaarok and even Dagded. Racles will do anything to stoop to any low to get whatever he wants, and his tricking of Goma into his untimely demise ultimately earned him both Dagded's approval and ire at the same time. However, this is a subverted trope, as Racles was Good All Along. He did everything as one long con to ensure Gira secured the throne and had the resources to defeat Dagded, even if it meant being seen as a monster.
  • Hypocrite: In episode #10, Rcles chides the monarchs for not immediately taking his offer, saying that they're only thinking about themselves and putting their pride above the populace. However, Racles considers his citizens Racles best pawns to further his own ambitions, often using the current crisis to make a naked power grab for himself. This turns out to be him deliberately going over his original principles to uphold the facade.
  • I Am Not My Father: He distinguishes himself from Causus by declaring his loyalty to Dagded. This turns out to have a double meaning, however; not only is Racles lying through his teeth, he also genuinely cared for Gira unlike Causus who only saw the younger boy as a pawn.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Everything he had done throughout the series was to stop Dagded, even if meant turning his back on his beliefs and earning the enmity of the people. Subverted, as ultimately Racles admits that he went Drunk with Power and thus while some of his actions were justified, not all of them were. As such, he completely accepts the punishment for his actions.
  • I Need You Stronger: All of his actions from the very beginning were to make Gira strong enough to take out Dagded, providing him the various tools (God Kabuto, the OhgerCrownLance, and King Caucasus Kabuto) to help bring down the Galactinsect king.
  • Irony: Gira played the part of the "Tyrant King" for the games of the children of Shugodam, whereas Racles was a tyrant for real. Taken even further when it's revealed Racles also played the part of the "Tyrant King," to spur his younger brother and the other monarchs into being able to have the resources to defeat Dagded. Further irony comes from the fact unlike Gira, who was mainly roleplaying, Racles admits to Becoming the Mask.
  • It's All About Me: When Gira argues that the king's job is supposed to protect the people, Racles replies that the people are simply a means and that he is the nation. This is part of his elaborate con.
  • Kansas City Shuffle: As part of the Long Game he made to obtain the power to kill Dagded, he ensured that the monarchs would be able to end his rule and make Gira the king of Shugoddam, while under the belief they managed to defeat him through their strength and teamwork, while in reality, he made use of their actions to make Dagded believe he is his loyal follower.
  • Klingon Promotion: He earns himself a spot on the Five Jesters by getting Goma killed by the King-Ohgers, albeit with Dagded doing so reluctantly.
  • Lack of Empathy: His people being slaughtered by Bognaarok doesn't concern him if it gives him the means to Take Over the World, and after willingly signing up with the Galactinsects it doesn't get any better, showing he would even let his planet die if it means he'll die as king. Once again, it's a full-on facade, as it's shown later on that he genuinely cares for his subjects and brother.
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • His tyrannical nature causes Gira to rebel against him and steal his OhgerCalibur. The fact God Kuwagata instantly awakens following Gira's "The Reason You Suck" Speech to Racles and empowers a self-proclaimed rebel to his rule just adds further karma.
    • In #18, He gets the OhgerLance and OhgerCrown stolen by Kaguragi who reveals that he and his sister Suzume have been playing Racles the whole time before the crown is given to Gira, Gira gives another "The Reason You Suck" Speech to Racles for dismissing his noble dream long ago, gets thoroughly beaten by a now stable Extreme King-Ohger, and finally Shuggodam gets taken over by Bognaarok under his nose.
    • This continues on in #19, where he now has lost the support of the majority of the Shugoddam citizens, gets pranked by Yanma and Jeremie, and gets tied up in his battered state.
    • This tour still continues in #20, as he makes his Evil Overlord speech that causes him to lose any remaining support and ends up being defeated by Gira, losing his throne and his title as king as well.
  • Let No Crisis Go to Waste:
    • Rather than help stop the Bognaarok, he refuses to act and instead sits back to let the other monarchs die in battle so he can take over their kingdoms for his own selfish reasons, even if it gets his own people slaughtered. Fortunately, God Kuwagata throws a wrench in that plan by empowering Gira when he is willing to step up.
    • #9 and #10 see the other monarchs at their Darkest Hour; their kingdoms toppled by the Bognaarok and held hostage with explosive cocoons, all while their final hope Gira is in enemy hands. What does Racles do? He attempts to blackmail them into subjugation in exchange for aid. Even resident backstabber Kaguragi finds himself disgusted.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He's no Kaguragi (having been played like a fiddle by the Toufu ruler for years prior to his defeat), but the former King of Shugoddam is more than able to sway others to his plans. As it turns out, however, he had been playing the deception game long before Kaguragi reached his current standard with the king of Toufu admitting that Racles was the one using him all along.
  • Master Actor: He was able to pretend to be an evil tyrant for over a decade, while never breaking character to ensure that absolutely no one realized his true allegiance with the only exception being Suzume, who only knew his goals due to the hidden message he left in her wedding ring.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • His first name is derived from "Heracles" (ヘラクレス Herakuresu), a nod to the Greco-Roman hero and the the actual namesake of the Hercules beetle in Japanese. Constant conflation of this Greek name with the Roman "Hercules" (ヘルクレス or ハーキュリーズ in Japanese, depending on which pronunciation you use) leads to bad Romanizations (Racules, Rcules).
    • His last name is derived from the Japanese pronunciation of Rhyniognatha hirstinote , the only type known from the extinct genus of arthropod known as Rhyniognatha.
  • Multilayer Façade: He pretends to be a wise benevolent king to his people, while secretly being a power-hungry tyrant with plans to take over the world. After his true nature is exposed, he returns as Shugod Mask and once more pretends to be a benevolent ruler of Tikyu. Then it turns out his tyrant persona was a complete farce and that he was Good All Along and only pretending to be a tyrant to obtain Dagded's trust.
  • My Nayme Is: His first name is pronounced as "Racles", but is officially spelled as "Racles" thanks to the aforementioned confusion between Heracles and Hercules.
  • Mysterious Past: Until #42, what happened to Rcules from when he was an idealistic child and Gira's Cool Big Bro to the tyrannical king in the present was kept hidden.
  • Necessarily Evil: His persona of an evil tyrant is ultimately part of a larger plan to rid Tikyū of Dagded once and for all. While he may have lost sight of himself before reaching that point, it is clear that he knew from the beginning that he would face justice for his crimes.
  • The Needs of the Many: His main belief/bargaining chip for the other kings to surrender to him is that so long as some lives are saved under his rule it's still better than all lives on Tikyū being lost. This does not sit well with Gira, particularly due to how children are part of "the few" he's willing to sacrifice. Again, it's all part of his con.
  • Never My Fault: It becomes clear that not only is Racles incapable of taking responsibility for his actions, he's incapable of even feigning remorse for his actions due to his sense of entitlement. When given a Last-Second Chance to apologize for his actions and remain king, he chooses to attack Gira and reaffirms his worldview instead. This is averted after his act is revealed and Gira slays Dagded, and Racles, with great dignity, accepts whatever fate Rita decides for him following the battle.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: He may have had good intentions behind his actions, but the tyrannical deeds he committed as part of his con means that Racles is not exempt from Rita's judgement, which he takes in stride.
  • Not So Stoic: When he does lose the stoicism, he is furious. This is best showcased in #20, as detailed in Villainous Breakdown below.
  • Perfectly Arranged Marriage: His marriage to Suzume, originally meant to bind Toufu to Shugoddam and prevent Kaguragi from stepping out of line, turns out to be this with the reveals that Racles is Good All Along and that Suzume became his willing confidant in his plans.
  • Plot Parallel: Racles is juxtaposed with Kaguragi as elder statesmen of Tikyu who manipulate people and events to their own ends. Suzume's realization that her brother and her betrothed are very similar allows her to become Racles's willing accomplice, especially after his defeat in #20.
  • The Poorly Chosen One: By birthright, he's heir to being Kuwagata Ohger. However, unlike the other kings, he's decidedly not The Good King and is a tyrant seeking to Take Over the World. God Kuwagata, quite understandably, rejects him and gives the power to Gira instead, forcing Racles to use a false Shugod to transform. Except he deliberately invoked this trope so he could be The Chooser of the One.
  • Practically Different Generations: Downplayed. He and his brother are 10 years apart.
  • Properly Paranoid: He knew that Dagded was watching him somehow, which is why he never let down the tyrant persona he made for himself regardless of what's happening. This is also why he didn't want to lose the throne to Gira since Gira would have no way of knowing he is watched by a mad god, so the moment Boshimar is revealed to be Kamejim in disguise, he lets himself be defeated and fakes his death.
  • The Quisling: He allies himself with Dagded and the Galactinsects, and thus rules over Shugoddam as a reward under his guise as Shugo Mask.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: His outfit for the first half of the series is primarily black with red highlights, and he's a tyrannical ruler actively seeking to consolidate power by any means necessary. This gets subverted after Dagded's death, as by this point, Racles's plan had been revealed, and back to wearing his red outfit he willingly accepts whatever punishment awaits him for his actions.
  • Red Baron: Dagded gives him his Jester epithet, "the Atrocious", in #41.
  • Refused by the Call: He was firmly of the opinion he'd be Kuwagata Ohger, and had a birthright to it. When it turns out Racles is a tyrant who'd rather use the crisis to conquer the other kingdoms than actually protect his people, God Kuwagata chooses the rebellious upstart Gira to be Kuwagata Ohger instead. When Racles does become a KingOhger, it's an evil one that uses a false Shugod as its power source rather than a warrior chosen.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: Come his return post-timeskip, he now wears a blue version of his royal outfit to contrast Gira's heroic red.
  • Sixth Ranger Traitor: In the Galactinsects.
  • Skewed Priorities: He is far more focused on trying to take over the other kingdoms rather than dealing with the invading force that's threatening to exterminate the human race. He'd rather declare war on one of them rather than actually face the fact his plan failed. Yet another part of his act.
  • Smug Snake: Racles has a gigantic ego and seems fully convinced his plans for world domination will be successful. This bites him in the butt when his Evil Gloating to Gira directly results in God Kuwagata deciding to screw Racles's plan over by choosing him as Kuwagata Ohger. This is actually a huge facade, and after his plan to kill Dagded succeeds he ends up revealing himself as a modest Humble Hero.
  • Spanner in the Works: As it turns out, Dagded wanted Gira to become a mindless Tyke-Bomb so he could become the same kind of world-destroying being Grodie was. Rcules refusing to go along with his father's plan and sending Gira away to the orphanage instead averts this fate entirely; having Ripple Effects that made a lot of the show's events possible.
  • The Starscream: Goma's death as a result of his machinations makes it clear that Racles is aiming for the highest power he can ever hope to attain (or so everyone thought).
  • The Sociopath: He cares for no one other than his own ambitions; everything else is all beneath him. While primarily an act, Racules confides in Yanma that he was Becoming the Mask.
  • The Stoic: For all of his ruthlessness and entitlement, he's remarkably restrained emotionally, expressing mostly contempt or arrogance.
  • Sucksessor: Played straight with Reinol, his distant ancestor, who was much more competent. Inverted with Gira, whose reign was considered far superior to his own. Ironically it turns out he is actually a Superior Successor in long-term planning and quick thinking since Reinol was not shown to have any plans to fight against Dagded aside from trying to fight against him in The Stinger of the movie in which Dagded quickly destroyed him, and the Ohsama Sentai's best plan against the Galacticinsects being using a Deadly Upgrade that would potentially kill them, he managed to worm himself into becoming one of Dagded's jesters and tricks him into upgrading the OhgerCalibur ZERO into an Immortal Breaker, which would have ended Dagded if it wasn't for his Body Backup Drive.
  • Suppressed Rage: In #42's flashback, when Dagded reveals himself responsible for the "Fury of the Gods" disaster that led to the death of his father and countless other people all across Tikyū, young Racles is clearly trembling with rage, but manages to prevent himself from doing anything rash and to start the Long Game that will bring about the fall of Dagded.
  • Team Killer: He intentionally refuses to take part in the first battle with Bognarok to get the rest of the team killed so he can take over their kingdoms. Fortunately, God Kuwagata had other plans.
  • Then Let Me Be Evil: From the moment he became king, he swore he would do whatever it took to see Dagded fall, even if it meant becoming a villain himself.
  • Token Good Teammate: Downplayed and Double Subverted. He pretends to be evil by siding with the Galactinsects, claiming they will help him reclaim his birthright, so he can get close enough to kill Dagded once an opportunity presents itself. While all for good of Tikyū, Rcles had to help the Galactinsects subjugate his homeworld and later gets Goma Rosalia killed in a calculative scheme to get closer to his goal.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Subverted and Deconstructed: he's initially in line to become Kuwagata Ohger and attempts to get the other monarchs killed. It's for this exact reason Gira chews him out and rebels, resulting in God Kuwagata choosing him instead and effectively denying Racles his position on the team before he even properly joined it. Then it gets Reconstructed once the truth behind his motives are revealed to end the threat posed by Dagded, allowed to help the Ohsama Sentai but not fully trusted by them.
  • Tragic Hero: What he truly is, since the Fury of the Gods, he was the only person on Tikyū aware of the existence of Dagded and the fact the planet is just a plaything for the Galacticinsect King's amusement. Immediately deciding to end Dagded's reign of terror, he decides to play Dagded's game and go against his own ideals to become the most evil king of Shugoddam's history all to gain Dagded's trust and gain the power to permanently end Dagded while knowing full well that he would become the most hated person on Tikyū.
  • Tranquil Fury: If he lowers his tone and glares someone down, they better watch what they say, as Kamejim would have learned if it wasn't for Rita stepping in to let the duel conclude without further disruption.
  • Uncertain Doom: He gets defeated by Gira and falls off a cliff in #20. Between the fact that he isn't explicitly shown breathing his last and his actor not getting his flowers, it's likely he's not quite dead yet. This is proven true in #34 in which he returns as Shugod Mask. #42 would explain that Gira missed his vitals when blasting him off the cliff.
  • Uriah Gambit: He intends to let the other four monarchs die in battle with Bognaarok while he does nothing so he can take over their kingdoms. This fails as God Kuwagata decides to empower Gira.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Flashbacks reveal in #5 and #18 that he was a doting older brother to Gira as a child. From #18, Gira remembers that he used to have a dream that he would be the king of a nation whose people worked to protect one another; a far cry from the corrupt persona of the present day. As it turns out, Racles hasn't lost what Gira used to admire about him, but was just hiding them under a thick mask of tyranny to give his brother a chance to kill Dagded.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: To his citizens, he presents himself as The Good King and is largely seen as such. He's actually a tyrant who wants to Take Over the World and doesn't give a darn about his people. The other monarchs see through all this bluster, but Racles' ability to spin defeats into victories prevents them from acting on it most of the time. However, Shugoddam's citizens start to realize Racles' true nature, as Gira and the others defeat DiamondDanjim in #19. By #20, he has lost the goodwill of all of his people after belittling them in his speech towards Gira. It turns out to be all an act, but he doesn't regain the good publicity, partially because of the lengths he went to look tyrannical and partially because ending Dagded's reign of terror was more important to him than his owm image.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Goes through one in #20 after Gira bests him and demands that he beg his people's forgiveness, lashing out and going on an unhinged rant that causes him to lose any remaining support he had. #42 revealed it was faked to have the people of Shugoddam fully back Gira as their king.
Rcules: The people are a means, but I am the nation! They are tools to serve the nation, without complaint, without thought. They do their job, gratefully, until they are broken. That is how a tool, how the people are most happy. Which is why I, and none other, must remain the embodiment of the nation!
  • Virtuous Character Copy: A double subversion of Ryuya Asami from Mirai Sentai Timeranger. They are both prominent authority figures who turn out to be scumbags who are related to their respective Red Rangers. While both also played a long game throughout the series to save their respective home, Ryuya's scheme is ultimately self-serving while Racles is genuinely selfless despite appearances and while he did eventually became a real tyrant enjoying the suffering of others for a while, he was able to snap out of it and get his goals back on the right path.
  • Visual Pun: His post-time skip attire is blue and he is of a noble household. A literal Blue Blood.
  • Walking Spoiler: He was advertised as the real king of Shugoddam, but the first episode reveals his true intentions. In addition, #42 further explores his secrets, making it virtually impossible to talk about him without spoilers.
  • A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: He's initially presented as a benevolent king, if a little stern and standoffish; however, there are hints that things aren't as rosy under his reign as they appear. He drops the mask during the Bognaarok attack, being an Orcus on His Throne while the other monarchs fight the Bognaarok, revealing to Gira his intention to usurp the other kingdoms once they have exhausted themselves in order to Take Over the World, regardless of the lives that would be sacrificed in the process. It turns out that he planned to be seen as this.
  • The Wrongful Heir to the Throne: He is the king of Shugoddam and heir to Kuwagata Ohger's power by blood...but he's also a (fake) tyrant who wants to take over the world and has no concern if his people die in the process. It does turn out Gira's his younger brother, but this still makes Racles the crown prince and first in line to the throne.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: Gira made a terrible habit of ruining his plans, but was able to make things work out in the end with the help of Suzume and Kaguragi.
  • You Rebel Scum!: Proclaims Gira a traitor to the kingdom of Shugoddam at the end of the first episode and commands he be summarily executed upon capture.
  • Zero-Approval Gambit: He basically took Iroki's ploy and ramped it up by 100 by ensuring that everyone in Tikyu would see him as an evil tyrant so that Dagded would believe that Racles is working for him loyally while having no idea that it's all a ploy to end the king of the universe's rule.

Tropes exclusive to him as Ohkuwagata Ohger

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/osko_ohkuwagataohger.png
Oh Qua God!note
Lord of the, lord of the,
Lord~ of the Shugod~!!
Ohkuwagata Ohger!
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kingoh_silvergold.png
You are, I am,
We are the, We are the King! King-Ohger!

  • 11th-Hour Ranger: Ohkuwagata Ohger has appeared for a substantial amount of time in the series, but Racles only officially joins the team in the final endgame arc.
  • Alliterative Name: Ohkuwagata Ohger.
  • Blasphemous Boast: With the reveal that the OhgerCalibur ZERO is a prototype that Racles himself completed and he's powered by a false Shugod, its transformation jingle of claiming to be "Lord of the Shugod" becomes blasphemous.
  • Bright Is Not Good: Ohkuwagata Ohger's silver suit is the most reflective and striking color scheme of all the ranger suits thus far, with the OhgerCrown granting him additional golden armor. Racles, however, is anything but worthy of being a Ranger, though this gets subverted in the final arc.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: Ohkuwagata Ohger basically means "King Kuwagata King Ranger." King Ohkuwagata Form adds an extra "King" to the mix.
  • Evil Counterpart: Not just to Kuwagata Ohger, but the other monarchs as a whole. The OhgerCalibur ZERO's jingle is more medieval-sounding and ominous, with its transformation announcement using "Lord" in contrast to the OhgerCalibur's "King". As we see later, the "evil" part was just a ruse.
  • Finishing Move:
    • Lord Finish: Has two variations.
      • Ohkuwagata Ohger (Base form) charges the OhgerCalibur ZERO, wreathing the blade in flames before swinging it twice, the first launching a fiery blast at the enemy that detonates on impact, and the second creating a giant energy construct of God Kuwagata ZERO that attacks the enemy.
      • King Ohkuwagata Ohger charges both the OhgerCalibur ZERO and OhgerCrownLance, conjuring silver energy blades in the shape of God Kuwagata ZERO's mandibles before performing a scissor slash to the target.
  • Flawed Prototype: King Ohkuwagata Ohger's retaining of its silver base suit and having added silver accents and extra mechanics on the suit compared to the completely golden King Kuwagata Ohger gives off the impression that it is an incomplete transformation, with the mechanics being used to forcefully control the form's power.
  • Japanese Beetle Brothers: He shares the same Animal Motif as Kuwagata Ohger. Bonus points for Racles and Gira being actual brothers by blood.
  • Palette Swap:
    • The suit is basically Kuwagata Ohger's colored silver with gold trim.
    • His Transformation Trinket, the OhgerCalibur ZERO, is an altered gold version of the OhgerCalibur with only the Kuwagata switch.
  • Punny Name: "O" is an alternate way to pronounce the number zero; his partner is God Kuwagata ZERO, and his name begins with "Oh".
  • Rule of Symbolism: The KingOhgers are a colorful group of warriors, demonstrating their ascension per the Shugods and their clashing mindsets. OhKuwagataOhger meanwhile is a dull gray Super Prototype; indicative of the lack of Shugod powering it, as well as the evil king under the suit.
  • Super Prototype: Ohkuwagata Ohger's equipment is made of less-refined versions of the standard rangers', but unlike the normal OhgerCaliburs, the OhgerCalibur ZERO is not powered by a Shugod, which makes the sword still usable as a Transformation Trinket regardless of the circumstances unlike its successors.

    Causus Husty/Ohkuwagata Ohger (I)

Portrayed by: Shidō Nakamura (live), Yasuhiko Imai (suit)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gceyui2baaatc62.jpg
The previous king of Shugoddam, and the father of Racles and Gira.
  • All for Nothing: Had Causus' original plans for Gira been able to succeed, he would have transformed into a world-wreaking being similar to Grodie, as Dagded wanted all along when gifting the Husty family Gira.
  • The Chains of Commanding: Believes it is a ruler's duty to protect the future of his people even if it means killing their emotions in the process.
  • Defiant to the End: In spite of suffering from a deadly illness, he chooses to defy the Galactinsects instead of acquiescing to their wishes.
  • The Ghost: A flashback in #5 has Boshimar inform Young!Racles that Causus is asking for him, though Causus never appears in person until he appears in #43 in a flashback.
  • Identical Grandson: He's Reiniol's descendant who bears an uncanny resemblance to him by virtue of being played by the same actor.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: He's shown suffering from an illness that causes him to cough up blood. This causes him to move up his plans to defy Dagded, letting Racles in on the secret as a teenager.
  • Meaningful Name: His first name is derived from the Caucasus beetle (コーサス, kasasu).
  • The Needs of the Many: He justifies turning Gira into a mindless pawn to be used against the Bognaarok and Dagded by pointing out how doing so would prevent the suffering of the common folk.
  • Posthumous Character: Passed away prior to the series, with #43 revealing that he was personally slain by the Galactinsects.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He only appears in person in one episode, yet his actions ultimately reverberate throughout the series.
  • Unwitting Pawn: As it turns out, his plan to have Gira eat all of the Shugod souls would have turned Gira into someone like Grodie - which was Dadged's reason for giving him Gira in the first place.
  • Virtue Is Weakness: Like Reniol before him, Causus was of the opinion that a good king needed to stifle their own emotions to protect their people; his justification for trying to turn Gira into a Tyke Bomb.

    Douga

Portrayed by: Yutaka Morioka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fo0dbbcaaaeaatb.jpg

The captain of the Royal Guard. Sharp and intimidating, he has sworn an oath to his king as his right arm. As such, he doesn't let anybody get close to Racles. That being said, he's much softer than what his appearance makes himself out to be.

  • Anti-Advice: Has a tendency to overthink the idea of royal decorum, resulting in him giving Gira terrible advice on at least two occasions; one of which nearly compromises the "tyrant's" friendship with Boone. That being said, he comes around to Gira's more lax style of ruling and allows himself to back off a bit.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: Almost all of his advice is ignored by Racles, who's more concerned with sounding right than being right.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Douga's breaking point was Racles's choice to side with the Bognaarok.
  • Family Man: Despite his loyalty to the crown, he's a devoted husband and father first. Oftentimes his actions come about because he wants to protect his family beyond all else.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After fleeing from the Bognaarok coup of Shugoddam, Douga attempts to find work in the other kingdoms as he feels he has disgraced his position by doing so. After failing at his attempts, he goes back to Shugoddam, where Gira is all too happy to welcome him back as a valued retainer.
  • Hidden Depths: #9 reveals that he's a huge fan of a famous N'Kosopan genius middle-schooler. He's also married and has a son.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is derived from 銅鉦ぶいぶい/dōkanebuibui, the Japanese name for the cupreous chafer.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: Remains a loyal servant of Racles, despite the latter's questionable actions. Subverted in #19, where Racles' capitulation to the Bognaarok causes him to turn on his former king.
  • Token Good Teammate: Out of Shugoddam's royal staff, Douga has quite a few humanizing moments, as shown by his more doubtful and comedic moments, and is fairly removed from having outright villainous moments. He eventually pulls off a Heel–Face Turn after becoming Gira's retainer in #21.
  • Undying Loyalty: If Douga believes someone has the kingdom's best intentions at heart, he is unflinchingly loyal to said person in question. This is best exemplified after the monarchs return from their impromptu Earth trip, as despite Racles returning to the throne (albeit thanks to some help) he still follows Gira to the bitter end.
  • Villain Has a Point: He's the only one in Racles's inner circle to show any sort of suspicion towards Kaguragi. Unfortunately for Douga, Racles was more concerned with him speaking out of turn than heeding any advice.

    Boshimar (spoilers)

Portrayed by: Jubun Fukuzawa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fo0dcibakamcjc5.jpg

Racles's chief advisor. Jovial and gentle, he is focused on providing wisdom as Racles' left arm.

  • Back from the Dead: He's among those temporarily brought back to life by Devonica in #49.
  • Dead All Along: He's been dead for a while and Kamejim was impersonating him the entire time.
  • The Good Chancellor: Deconstructed; he's completely loyal to his liege, despite said liege being a power-hungry despot with ambitions of world domination. Played straight by the actual Boshimar as seen in #43.
  • Goofy Print Underwear: He's revealed to wear a pair of boxers with his own face on them as a patch.
  • Impersonation-Exclusive Character: What little we know of the real Boshimar is initially through Kamejim pretending to be him, though more of his character is later revealed via flashbacks and his resurrection in #49.
  • Killed Offscreen: We see the real Boshimar in a flashback in #43, where he immediately notices Kamejim infiltrating Caucasus Kabuto Castle. The next we see of "Boshimar", it's Kamejim having killed and replaced him.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is derived from Kiboshimaruunka/黄星丸浮塵子), the Japanese name for the Ishiharanus iguchi species of plant hopper, which has the ability to impersonate ladybugs. Though in this case, he's the ladybug being impersonated.
  • The Mole: For the Bognaarok.

    Kofuki

Portrayed by: Kaisei Kawano

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/futngmaauaa2nij.jpg

A researcher in Racles' service. He debuts in The Secret of King Racles as Vedalia's assistant, before appearing again in #23 of the main series.

  • Ascended Extra: Was originally a side-character with less than five lines in The Secret of King Racles. He enters the show proper in #23 is is instrumental in the formations of King Caucasus Kabuto and God King-Ohger.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: Downplayed. Kofuki's largely ignored by Racles and his staff during the Racles spin-off, but is nearly scapegoated by Boshimar in #3 for Vedalia's "missing" research data until Racles finds it himself. In the show, it's the heroes that treat him worse by interrupting almost everything he says and showing no patience for him in #23. Justified though, as they have a gigantic Daigorg to deal with and technobabble wastes valuable time.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: Racles saves Kofuki from Shidejim not out of kindness, but because he still needs people to do his research.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: He makes an appearance in #23 to provide exposition on how to reactivate King Caucasus Kabuto.
  • Distressed Dude: King Racles prevents him from being killed by Shidejim.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is derived from the Japanese cockchafer beetle ( kofukikogane/粉吹金亀子).
  • The Promise: Asks King Racles for a "proper burial" in the Secrets finale, like Vedalia did.
  • Shrinking Violet: Shy, quiet, and out-of-the-way compared to the confident Vedalia.
  • Something We Forgot: He is revealed to still be alive in #23, though he nearly starved to death because he had been locked up in a secret part of the castle and forgotten about.

    Kogane and Boone

Kogane portrayed by: Anna Hoshino

Boone portrayed by: Minato Kiso
Adult Boone portrayed by: Ken Nakaya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kingohger_kogane_and_boone.jpg

A pair of siblings who are Gira's friends at the orphanage.

  • A Child Shall Lead Them: Downplayed. Gira is the only adult seen tending to the kids at the orphanage until his feud with Racles forces him on the run, forcing Kogane to take over and supervise the younger ones.
  • The Dividual: They are almost always never seen without each other. Even when Boone was chosen as God Ant's pilot, Kogane insists on tagging along to keep him safe, making God Ant the only Shugod to have two pilots onboard as a single unit (though Boone is still the main pilot).
  • Kid Has a Point: Kogane finds herself exasperated by Gira's "Tyrant" persona. Given how much of it has gotten him into trouble, she's right to be.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Kogane's name is derived from 黄金虫/koganemushi, the Japanese name for the scarab beetle.
    • Boone's name is derived from the onomatopoeia of the buzzing sound that beetles usually make, "ブーン/būn".
  • Only One Name: Due to them being orphans, they have no last names.
  • Only Sane Man: Enforced. They're the only two aware of Racles' true nature as a tyrant. However, they're kids and thus aren't taken seriously by everyone else. This is in stark contrast to Goroge, who buys all of Racles' hype and clashes with them.
  • Snooping Little Kid: Kogane and Boone stumble onto Racles scheming with Kaguragi during #4 and even lock eyes with their king - making their anger toward him clear.
  • True Companions: To Gira, being two of the few (at-first) citizens of Shugoddam willing to support him even as he's being framed by Racles.

    Gorōge

Portrayed by: Kotaro Yagi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bdioyjw3ke.png
I knew it! Prince Gira truly is... a wicked usurper!!!

A villager whose trademark attire is his hat and the broom he always carries. He is Racles' biggest supporter due to being successfully deceived by the latter's actions into thinking Gira is evil.
  • Broken Pedestal: Towards Racles once he reveals his true colors in #20, doing a quick 180 on his adoration in the process.
  • Deliberately Bad Example: He's Racles' most fervent supporter; serving as a living symbol of blind loyalty. He gets a bit better after Gira takes the throne, his new role being to pessimistically over-react at all times.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He may be one of Racles' biggest supporters, but once he sees how much of an uncaring tyrant he really is, he immediately loses all respect for him and shows that he was really just ignorant of Racles' true colors.
  • Hate Sink: As a character whose main purpose is to make wrong assumptions about Gira and worsen his reputation, a lot of viewers notably hate him for being such. This eventually disappears when he finally turns on Racles at the end of #20 after seeing latter's true personality, switching over to Gira's side. Unfortunately, he goes back to this role after the Ohsama Sentai's return from Earth before he leaves the role again.
  • Large Ham: He always shouts his proclamations of what he believes is the case. It's even how Boone is able to Spot the Imposter between him and Kamejim.
  • Made of Iron: He was able to survive Kamejim's ambush and despite clearly being ragged from the assault, he still has enough energy to regain consciousness, expose Kamejim's imersonation and being loud enough for Boone to recognize as the real deal.
  • Poor Communication Kills: His Large Ham tendencies in shouting out his Wrong Assumption in any situation that seemingly portrays Gira as evil ends up spurring the other villagers into following his view of the matter, creating more support for Racles as The Good King as a result. By #20, he and his faction eventually switch to rooting for Gira after Racles destroys what goodwill he has left with his speech.
  • Professional Butt-Kisser: He is usually the one to initiate and lead the other villagers' support in Racles. In #20, he and his faction still support Racles while the orphans and now the other villagers cheer for Gira despite his inaction in #19. When he and his faction witness Racles' Villainous Breakdown, they immediately switch sides and support Gira wholeheartedly.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: In #11, he's the first one to assume that Jeramie is working with the Bognaarok, and while we would later learn he isn't an outright villain, he has been assisting them for a millennia. And that's not even getting into Jeramie's status as a Half-Human Hybrid.
  • Swapped Roles: During the duel between Gira and Racles in #8, the orphans are the only ones cheering for Gira, aware of Racles' true nature. In #20, Goroge and his faction cheer for Racles while the rest of Shugoddam's citizens cheer on for Gira, until they witness his true colors. They immediately switch to Gira's side in the process, rooting for him to win.
  • Token Evil Teammate: While not a team, and not evil, per se, he is the one named citizen of Shuggoddam who is almost never portrayed in a positive light, with all others like him being unnamed generics. Additionally, he is at the head of any riots in the kingdom, and almost none of the main characters tolerate his antics.
  • Would Hurt a Child: #8 has him demanding the orphanage kids to stop their protest for Gira and attempt to wrangle a placard from Kogane's hands, which eventually devolves into him attempting to catch the kids when they fight back. Although this changes during the 2-year time skip where he actually tries to save some of the kids.

Kingdom of N'Kosopa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kingohger_nkosopa_crest_3.png
Emblem of N'Kosopa

Capital: Peta

A land dominated by technology, responsible for handling the infrastructure of the other kingdoms, as well as controlling shipping machines and supply chains. Its people are either familiar with or work with IT. The country was a subcontractor for Shugoddam before Yanma's rule, manufacturing various industrial parts.

    General Tropes
  • Animal Theme Naming: Citizens are named after various species of dragonfly.
  • Crapsack World: Prior to Yanma's rule, N'Kosopa was reduced to little more than a scrapyard run by various gangs after the Fury of the Gods, partly because the previous king opted to flee the kingdom.
  • Fantasy Counterpart Culture: Appears to be based on a futuristic version of Tokyo; it's even located where Japan would be on our Earth.
  • Fighting Your Friend: Presumably influenced by the Japanese Delinquent-stereotypes its citizens operate on, "hacking battles" are commonplace and the king can even be jumped by hacking groups at any time. Gira finds himself in awe of a society so "open to clashing."
  • Hollywood Hacking: The hacking Yanma and his citizens often engage in is always accompanied by retro videogame noises, giving the impression that the activity is like playing a videogame.
  • Japanese Delinquents: A running style amongst its citizens, specifically of the bōsōzoku variety, likely inspired by their king. Even the palace guards are dressed like a biker gang, with males having Delinquent Hair while females wear sarashi. Becomes more obvious in the Flashback Episode, wherein the N'Kosopans of the past are huddled into actual gangs.
  • Logical Weakness: N'Kosopa is the hub of technology, meaning almost everyone there is wired to its network. Everyone. Any attack that hijacks peoples' minds (Like, say, an Eldritch Abomination exercising Mind Control through speech) will be most effective here, since everyone's focus is huddled on this one network.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Its name is pasokon (パソコン), the Japanese word for personal computer, with its syllables arranged backwards.
    • Its capital city's name is derived from "petabyte", a measure of computer memory equal to 1,024 terabytes.
  • President Evil: During the Fury Of the Gods, N'Kosopa's king left it to rot, turning it into a cesspool of gang warfare under Suji. Yanma eventually cleaned house.
  • Technology Erasure Event: Imposed on them by Hillbill. Whilst under her Mind Control, the citizens were forced to demolish all of their technology and communications equipment; hence why the kingdoms are isolated and alone when the monarchs return from Earth. It Gets Better.
  • Tomorrowland: It's the only kingdom with fantastic sci-fi cyberpunk technology, compared to the rest of Tikyū, which outwardly appears stuck in a fantastic medieval setting.
  • What's Up, King Dude?: Its citizens are... very informal towards their king, to put it mildly. Yanma explains that his relationship with his citizens goes beyond king and commoner, which explains why they can get away with it.

    Shiokara

Portrayed by: Yuhei Chiwata

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fo0dez8aaaeitgr.jpg

Yanma's aide. He's an excitable person who idolizes his king to no end, but he also considers himself damage control whenever he thinks that Yanma has gotten out of hand.

  • Beleaguered Assistant: His main responsibility seems to be "damage control for Yanma's antics".
    • In #1 he places himself as Yanma's minder, knowing that if left alone the latter would just end up picking random fights.
    • #2 has him protest against Yanma harboring Gira, only to get shut down abruptly.
    • #13 has him be the only one who points out that Yanma's idea to prank Racles with the Venomix Shooter is a bad idea, only to get outvoted.
  • Crazy-Prepared: After falling under Mind Control via Hillbill's Compelling Voice, he started wearing earplugs just in case, which saved him from her initial take over of the kingdom.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: You wouldn't think it to look at him, but he was once The Dragon to what was effectively a yakuza clan and is determined enough to resist Hillbill's Mind Control.
  • Hidden Depths: #35 reveals that Shiokara was the strongest member of a gang of delinquents that ruled over the scrapyard before N'Kosopa was rebuilt.
  • Keet: Has a rather bubbly personality, and has been like that ever since he started following Yanma after beating his previous boss down in one punch.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is derived from shiokaratombo (塩辛蜻蛉), the Japanese name for the white-tailed skimmer.
  • Old Shame: Judging by his reaction in #35, he doesn't think too highly about his past as a former delinquent involved with making counterfeits.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: When Gira isn't acting as the Red to Yanma's Blue, Shiokara's the Blue to Yanma's Red - being the only one to worry about the consequences of his President's recklessness.
  • Reformed Criminal: He used to be part of a gang of delinquents that were involved with making counterfeit money. He eventually quit after seeing Yanma's resolve, following him to rebuild N'Kosopa.
  • Tickle Torture:
    • Discussed in #13. Shiokara ponders if Yanma's intention to prank Racles with a whoopee cushion will see his President subject to this for three days as punishment. He writes it off, assuming Yanma would remain stoic and unaffected even then. The President of N'Kosopa received a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown from a royally pissed-off Jeramie instead.
    • In #41, Shiokara is forced to dish this out on Yanma via Hillbill's Mind Control to delay his disarming of the throne-bombs. Yanma was neither stoic or unaffected.
  • Undying Loyalty: Shiokara's devotion to Yanma is so absolute that when Hillbill tries to force him to kill him the aide instead opts to commit suicide with the Thunderclapper.

Kingdom of Ishabana

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kingohger_ishabana_crest.png
Emblem of Ishabana

Capital: Flopital

An archipelagic nation renowned for the arts and medicine, providing medical care to the other kingdoms. The people's welfare and happiness are rather high, attributed to their love for beauty.

    General Tropes
  • Animal Theme Naming: Citizens are named after various species of mantis.
  • Culture Chop Suey: It appears to be greatly influenced by the Netherlands and Venice, with its royal court modeled on France's during the Ancien Régime, and the outfits inspired on those from the Victorian era.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • The kingdom is centered on grace and beauty while also being known as the land of medicine; its name can be written as "doctor/physician flower" in kanji (医者花).
    • Its capital city's name is a portmanteau of "flower" and "hospital".
  • Ninja Maid: #3 reveals that the palace maids (primarily Cleo) also serve as royal guards and spies.
  • Towering Flower: Flopital is located on top of one, with the royal palace in its center.

    Diid and Metally Ran

Diid portrayed by: Kraus
Metally portrayed by: Alisa Durbrow

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/diid_and_metally_ran.png
The previous king and queen of Ishabana, and Hymeno's parents.
  • Meaningful Name: Their names are derived from the scientific name for the iridescent bark mantis, Metallyticus splendidus.
  • No Name Given: Their names are not revealed until Adventure Heaven.
  • Posthumous Character: They were assassinated during the Fury of the Gods by an unknown figure, who later turns out to be Grodie from the Galactinsects.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: They are shown to be just as proactive in aiding their subjects as Hymeno, personally going out of their way to provide medical aid during the "Fury of the Gods" disaster.

    Sebastian

Romane Dearborn/"Sebastian"

Portrayed by: Minami (true identity), Hiroto Yoshimitsu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fo0dez8auaan4ik.jpg
Click here to see his true appearance

Hymeno's chamberlain. He is a worldly man who often frets over his queen's self-indulgence, though he still meets her needs to the fullest extent. While he is actually in his mid-to-late twenties, his outward appearance as an older gentleman is a result of Hymeno's desire for him to be more like a butler.

  • Acquired Situational Narcissism: Among the retainers he lets becoming regent get to his head the most, wearing a crown and growing a big belly in the process.
  • Affectionate Nickname: He is "Sebas" to Hymeno.
  • Cerebus Retcon: When Sebastian is revealed to be a much younger man wearing makeup to look older than he really is, it's portrayed as a sign of Hymeno's capricious nature as the queen of Ishabana. #36, however, reveals that he became despondent over his extreme beauty, and Hymeno prevented him from killing himself, changing his face and earning his loyalty in the process.
  • The Jeeves: He is dressed like a quintessential Western butler. This is revealed to be an Invoked Trope in #3, as seen in Younger Than They Look down below.
  • King Incognito: Or in his case, "Noble Incognito"; #36 reveals that Romane is the heir to the Dearborn dukedom, who renounced his previous identity to become the butler Sebastian.
  • Meaningful Name: In Japan, "Sebastian" is the archetypical name for butlers, similar to "Jeeves" or "Alfred" in Western circles. As it turns out, it's not his real name.
  • Old Retainer: Parodied. He looks like this for Hymeno, but the truth is he's barely older than her.
  • Pretty Boy: His true appearance sees boyish features combined with impressive heightnote  and a elegant personality that makes every maid present swoon at the sight of him.
  • So Beautiful, It's a Curse: Romane grew to resent his beauty, which drove him to nearly commit suicide. Fortunately, Hymeno stopped him in time.
  • Younger Than They Look: He's actually 25. Apparently, Hymeno had asked him to wear special makeup and even made him change his name and voice in order for him to be more like a traditional butler. Even funnier, Hiroto Yoshimitsu was in his sixties at the time of filming. #36 later reveals that he had requested to hide his true face's beauty, as he felt that it caused too many problems.

    Cleo Urbanus

Portrayed by: Matsuri Kamisato

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cleo_urbanus.jpg
The head maid of Ishabana's royal court, serving a multitude of roles in the castle.
  • Meaningful Name: Her first and last names are derived from the Creobroter urbanus species of praying mantis.
  • Ninja Maid: On top of being an excellent maid, she's quite skilled in hand-to-hand combat and spy work.
  • No Name Given: She was primarily referred to as simply "Head Maid" before her name was revealed in #25.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite her professionalism, even she isn't immune to the charm's of Sebastion's true face.

    Elegance Moun

A young girl who was one of Hymeno's patients.

Kingdom of Gokkan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kingohger_gokkan_crest.png
Emblem of Gokkan

Capital: Ziburn

The land of law and order, known for its freezing climate. International criminals are shipped here to stand trial at its supreme court and — where necessary — incarcerated in its prison. Because of this, its population is predominantly made up of inmates and reformed criminals, all of whom have varying backgrounds.

    General Tropes
  • The Alcatraz: In addition to being a court of law, it also serves as a penal colony; only those accused of the most dire crimes end up at Gokkan.
  • An Ice Person: Gokkan's rulers have access to a technique known as the Ice Seal, which is represented by gray-blue eye. In times where the accused is unable to be judged by traditional legal means, the user is able to conjure up a prison made of ice that traps the user in it, at the cost of trapping themselves as well.
  • Elaborate Underground Base: After the Time Skip, Bug Naraku moves its capital to Gokkan's depths, indirectly making it this for the monarchs.
  • Elective Monarchy: The heir to Gokkan's throne is personally chosen by the incumbent king.
  • Grim Up North: Heroic example; Gokkan is located in Tikyū's northern hemisphere (where Canada would be located on our Earth, in fact), and has an appropriately chilly climate, while also being the kingdom with the most outwardly serious demeanor.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Gokkan's name is derived from the Japanese word for midwinter (極寒, gokkan).
    • The name of its capital city is derived from saiban (裁判), the Japanese word for "judgement".
  • Scales of Justice: Befitting its reputation as the kingdom of law and order, a gigantic pair of scales sits atop Ziburn's royal palace/supreme court building.
  • Secret Underground Passage: Has an entire tunnel-system within the depths of its capital, which prisoners are known to try and use to escape. Becomes a good thing in #47 when said escapees are encouraged to use it to transfer refugees displaced by the second Fury of the Gods to Bug Naraku.
  • She Is the King: Gokkan's rulers bear the title of "king" (国王/kokuōnote ) regardless of gender.
  • Sizable Snowflakes: The palace's throne room is decorated with carvings of snow crystals.

    Karras de Haan

Karras de Haan/Papillon Ohger (I)

Portrayed by: Rei Yoshii (live), Yuichi Hachisuka (suit)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/karras_7.jpg
The previous king and chief justice of Gokkan, and Rita's mentor.
  • Back from the Dead: She's among those Devonica temporarily brings back to life in #49.
  • Came Back Wrong: She serves as the first zombie Grodie revives after his unsealing, mindlessly attacking Ishabana with her Ice Seal powers.
  • Faking the Dead: She conspired with Siron to fake her own death via poisoning in order to hunt down the culprit behind the Fury of the Gods without violating Gokkan's policy of neutrality.
  • Killed Off for Real: Kamejim finishes her off after he and Minongan free Grodie from the Ice Seal she kept their fellow Jester in.
  • Meaningful Name: Her first name is derived from karasuageha/揚羽, the Japanese name for the crow swallowtail butterfly, while her surname is derived from its scientific name, Papilio dehaanii.
  • Neutral No Longer: She could not stand to remain neutral in the wake of the Fury of the Gods, deciding to personally hunt down the culprit to bring justice by faking her own death.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: Her Ice Seal technique meant that she sealed herself alongside the culprit of the Fury of the Gods, Grodie the Tranquil. When Kamejim and Minongan come to free Grodie, she's unsealed as well, but Kamejim kills her to prevent her from stopping them — and Grodie even turns her into an undead for good measure.

    Siron

Portrayed by: Kisuke Iida

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shiron.jpg
Karras's husband and the former prince consort of Gokkan.
  • Casting Gag: Both Mitsuhide Nira and Siron were the subordinates of their protagonists' (Shinnosuke/Rita) parental figures (Eisuke/Karras), and were responsible for the deaths of said parental figures. Though this is inverted in Siron's case, as he turns out to actually be innocent all along, Karras having faked her death while he took the fall for it. Funnily enough, Karras is portrayed by Rei Yoshii, who starred alongside Iida in Drive as Rinna Sawagami.
  • He Knows Too Much: Being targeted by Kamejim #16, the reason later revealed that he possibly knew the truth behind the Fury of the Gods.
  • Killed Off for Real: Is ambushed and killed by Kamejim.
  • Taking the Heat: Heroic example. Siron frames himself for the murder of his wife for almost 15 years so she can leave Gokkan and pursue the culprit behind the Fury of the Gods to keep Gokkan's neutrality untarnished.
  • Til Murder Do Us Part: Is imprisoned for the murder of his wife. Turns out that not only was he innocent, but there was no murder in the first place... until someone else commits the deed.

    Morphonia

Portrayed by: Kasumi Hasegawa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fo0de0faeaaou27.jpg

Rita's friend and personal attendant, and the bailiff of the supreme court. She's a lazy person who'd rather not work at all, but she is very good at her job regardless.

  • Best Friend: For Rita, the two having the emotionally closest relationship of any of the rulers and their retainers.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Morphonia is a very competent servant, but despite this and her chipper demeanor would rather slack off if she had her way.
  • Establishing Character Moment: When Gira is brought in in #5, the very first thing Morphonia asks is if Rita is clocking out, and whether she can do so as well. She later reacts with dread at Rita announcing a new investigation into Gira.
  • Everyone Went to School Together: Rita mentions that they went to law school together.
  • First-Name Basis: She addresses Rita by her first name without any honorifics, indicating a high level of familiarity between them as well as her less-than-professional demeanor.
  • Genki Girl: Has a bright, cheery demeanor.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Her name has been debated between "Morphonia" and "Morfonia".
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Rita, with them promising each other repeatedly that they'd be together forever.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name is derived from the morpho butterfly.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her parents ditched her after she helped them escape.

    Moffun

Voiced by: Hōchū Ōtsuka (official), Fortune Fotsuka (In-Universe)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/moffun.jpg
The yeti-based mascot of the popular TV show Moffun to Issho ("Together with Moffun"). Rita keeps a collection of different-sized plushies of him in their private quarters, the largest of them acting as their confidant for their troubles.

Kingdom of Toufu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kingohger_toufu_crest.png
Emblem of Toufu

Capital: Takitate

The land of agriculture, responsible for storing and supplying the food of each country. The profits made from international trade, as well as its fertile land and pleasant climate, allows its people to live in peace and leisure.

    General Tropes
  • Fantasy Counterpart Culture: Its aesthetic and culture are evocative of Edo Era Japan.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Toufu (豆腐), also known as beancurd, is a food product made from soy milk.
    • Its capital city's name is derived from takitate (炊きたて), the Japanese word for freshly-cooked rice.
  • She Is the King: Similarly to Gokkan, Toufu's rulers — male or female — bear the title of "[ruling] lord" (王殿/ōtono).
  • World of Ham: You'd be hard-pressed to find someone under Kaguragi's rule who doesn't fall under his theatrical umbrella.
  • Wutai: It's the only Japanese/eastern-like kingdom in the very western medieval setting.

See her section under here for more details.

    Suzume Dybowski

Portrayed by: Mami Kamura

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kingohger_suzume.jpg

Kaguragi's younger sister. She is held captive by Racles as a potential fiancée after Kaguragi made a deal with Racles to use the Demishugods.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: She is very clingy towards Racles, much to his chagrin, though the end of episode #15 implies that it's an act, and #18 confirms it. Then #42 implies it's actually genuine especially since she was willing to be his Secret-Keeper for two years in his plan to kill Dagded along with subverting this since Racles genuinely appreciates her help and presence as shown with him having no problem with her snuggling up to him in #44.
  • Abduction Is Love: Her captivity in Shugoddam seemingly made her fall for Racles. However, it's implied that this is an act so that she could protect Toufu in her own way. It's eventually revealed she'd been playing Racles the entire time as part of a long-term plan with her brother.
  • Becoming the Mask: Her lovestruck act around Racles was originally meant to be an act meant to get him to lower his guard, but after she became his confidant after their marriage it's clear that Suzume's feelings for Racles are genuine.
  • Big Brother Worship: Seems to greatly adore Kaguragi, if her addressing him as "ani-sama" is any indication. The reason she decided to help Racles with his hidden plans is even because she notices similarities between them.
  • Black Widow: Was originally planning on killing Racles so her brother could get the throne of Shugoddam.
  • Crocodile Tears: She uses this in #19 in order to get Douga and the guards to let her escape from the Caucasus Kabuto Castle.
  • Delicate and Sickly: Kuroda mentions in #15 that she has a frail constitution, which has made Kaguragi overprotective of her.
  • Double Agent: #42 reveals her as a willing accomplice in Racles' plans, making her both her brother's agent within Shugoddam and Racles' confidant with regards to his overall plans.
  • Honey Trap: Heroic version: her entire lovestruck fool act was a long game to manipulate Racles. Or so it seems, given how she became a willing accomplice to his plans.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name is derived from suzumebachi (スズメ蜂), the Japanese name for the yellowjacket wasp.
  • Minor Major Character: Suzume rarely makes appearances throughout the series, and almost every time she shows up it's usually when something serious is happening.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Suzume plays the role of the foolish lovestruck girl to keep Racles from suspecting her true intentions: protecting Toufu and helping Kaguragi obtain the OhgerCrownLance.
  • Put on a Bus: No mention is made of her after #25 and the Time Skip. She returns in #33.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Apparently being over-the-top runs in the Dybowski family, as does being a skilled manipulator.

    Kuroda

Portrayed by: Hajime Kanzaki (live), Kosuke Toriumi (voice)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kuroko_king_ohger.jpg

A kuroko who serves as Kaguragi's chief steward.

  • The Faceless: His face is covered by a cloth with an orange smiley-face drawn on it.
  • Large Ham: Is every bit as theatrical as his master.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is possibly derived from 黒大豆/kurodaizu, the Japanese name for the black soybean.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Has a rather youthful face under that hood of his and yet his throat has the timbres of a middle-aged man.
