    Fairy Leviathan

Fairy Leviathan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/MMZ_Leviathan_6059.jpg
Hypothetical English voice: Sash Lilac

One of Neo Arcadia's Four Guardians, Leviathan was disintegrated by Omega's death throes only to mysteriously rematerialize in Manehattan, Equestria. For tropes pertaining to her appearance in her source material, click here.

  • 24-Hour Armor: Justified in that she's a robot, but the only time she has been seen removing her body armor is when she needed somebody to clean grime off of her endoskeleton and interior. Otherwise, she keeps them on at all times.
  • Achilles' Heel: Leviathan can storm through most of what Equestria throws at her, even if what is thrown is flammable. However, as Salamandra demonstrates and Illudere exploits, she has no real answer for illusions until the Lock-On hardware becomes accessible.
  • Adaptational Badass: On several levels. Leviathan eventually discovers that her blueprints were altered, hiding a set of abilities that she never showed in canon; these range from the Double Jump mentioned below to the Overdrive function used by all the Biometals in Mega Man ZX. In addition, the aftermath of her fight against Trifecta reveals that she's inherited the Mega Man line's Variable Weapons System, albeit a variant revolving around her ice and Javelin.
  • An Arm and a Leg: One of Leviathan's arms is reduced to a mess of molten metal as a result of her unconventional plan of attack against Metallium, the fact that the dragon's Reddocite fixes her up notwithstanding.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Is able to figure out how Gray Ghost's phasing abilities work in mere moments thanks to a stray comment and come up with a way to counter them on the fly.
  • Badass in Distress: In "Curveball on the Outside Corner", she is kidnapped by Illudere on Ignition's orders.
  • Break the Badass: Illudere succeeds in doing this to Leviathan when she traps the Reploid in a real Lotus-Eater Machine of an illusion, making her live—if only in her own mind—230-plus years in a version of Neo Arcadia that lacked Dr. Weil and Omega. Going from a world that showed humanity and Reploids at their best back to reality incites what Coffee believes is a nervous breakdown.
  • Character Catchphrase: "Everypony in this city is crazy!", and derivatives thereof.
  • Celibate Hero: "Single and uninterested", in her words. Her response to a letter sent from a secret admirer is to impale it with the Javelin.
  • Challenge Seeker: Claims to hate violence for violence's sake, passing off her enjoyment of combat as part of her desire to match herself against someone capable of fighting on her level.
  • Character Narrator: The bulk of the story is told from her perspective. She seems to be aware that someone in the future might be interested enough in her memories to see them for themselves, given that at times she addresses the reader directly.
  • Clothing Damage: One of the end results of being attacked by Omega, which carries over when Leviathan is transferred to Equestria. This is fixed by her auto-repair during her first two weeks in town. On another occasion one of her arm guards gets destroyed by Gray, but an application of Reddocite is able to piece it back together.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Deals one of these to the entire Midnight Castle gang, bringing them low in only two moves. She later scores another one against Statuette, the pony's elemental attacks and sword unable to phase her.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Is able to rein in the urge to squeal when subjected to how adorable Equestria's residents can be at times, but she knows it's only a matter of time before she cracks. Zig-Zag eventually pushes her past the breaking point.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: While she doesn't mind being on good terms with the locals, she initially doesn't want to form any lasting friendships with them on account of her need to return home, being focused on her duty to Neo Arcadia. She eventually realizes that she cares more about Gray, Drama and Celestia than she first believed, which helps her solidify her decision to fight on Manehattan's behalf when Cocoa Mocha makes his move.
  • Determinator: She makes it clear that if she has any stake in a fight, she'll keep going until her generator is destroyed. Trifecta, Metallium, and Glintlock all learn this the hard way.
  • Double Jump: One of Leviathan's password-protected abilities that she eventually unlocks. This lets her get extra height equal to four-fifths of a regular jump, effectively allowing her to roof hop across the city.
  • Enemy-Detecting Radar: Leviathan's systems are able to clue her in on incoming threats, even if she has to get a visual of them to confirm what they are.
  • Evolving Weapon: Due to Leviathan awakening the Variable Weapons System, the Frost Javelin picks up new capabilities as time goes by:
    • The Permafrost Squirrel lets the Javelin function as a makeshift drill, and can even carry Leviathan a short ways through the air.
    • The Gatling Harpoon removes the "hardware limitations" imposed on the spearhead, allowing Levi to spam its homing capabilities as much as she likes as long as there's energy available.
  • First-Person Smartass: As it turns out, Leviathan has a lot going on in her head. Whenever the story focuses on her perspective, she inwardly comments on everything about Equestria and its inhabitants that gets her attention. She keeps a handful of snark reserved for Gray and Drama, who are two of the quirkiest individuals she's met in her life.
  • Fish out of Water: Comes from a tech-centric world, and has difficulty getting used to one centered around magic. This also applies on a temporal level as well: her first encounter with a door that doesn't open automatically or with a button press has her smacking into it.
  • Good Thing You Can Heal: When Leviathan lands on the rooftop, it's with the heavy damage she picked up from being curbstomped by Omega at the start of Zero 3, including a fairly nasty rent in her side. Her auto-repair systems are capable of restoring her to full health without outside help, though it's a slow process; she states that if she had access to Neo Arcadia's capsules, she'd be fully repaired in a matter of days instead of weeks. In addition, she later notes that while the systems can repair, they can't replace; if she loses a limb completely, it's gone for good without outside help.
  • Happily Married: Depicted as such after she ties the knot with Honoré, and it's later implied that she remarried after his death. The effect is spoiled, however, in the face of it being the work of Illudere.
  • Hates Being Touched: Is initially repulsed by ponies' propensity for close contact, no thanks to Drama Heart's antics during their first encounter. She gradually starts growing out of this, and the trait is fully gone after Illudere's defeat.
  • Heel Realization: Goes through several of these. The first centers on the "retirement" of innocent Reploids that she took part in previously, prompting her to come clean to the city's residents via the local newspaper. The other is when she forgets that she's dealing with flesh-and-blood ponies instead of machines and threatens to pull several ponies' wings off, driving her to apologize to them with the Royal Police as her witnesses.
  • Heroic BSoD:
    • Learning that magic is a legitimate concept will do that to a robot. Leviathan's hardware crashes and causes her to faint when she first hears about it.
    • Levi suffers a much more serious nervous breakdown after she wakes up from the Luminous Cruelty, being taken away from her ideal world back to reality.
  • Improvised Weapon: Is not above using whatever's around her to gain an advantage if her ice powers and Javelin aren't enough to cut it. In one case, she distracts Gray in mid-attack by using a toy plastic ring from a swimming pool to muzzle her.
  • In-Series Nickname: When being cheered on during her match with Bossa, one of the on-lookers calls her "Levi". She decides she likes it, and it sticks.
  • Interspecies Romance: Gets involved in one with the human Honoré while trapped by Illudere's magic.
  • It Amused Me: Randomly drenches a pony in pool water while roof hopping across Manehattan for no stated reason other than this trope.
  • No-Sell: Does this to electricity per her source game's elemental triangle. As revealed when she saves Drama Heart's life during a storm, this lets her say "no" to natural lightning.
  • Not So Above It All: Levi tries to stay collected, in control and professional at all times. Time and time again, the antics of those around her get the better of her.
    • When Gilbert explains to her what "chillax" means, she thinks it's the coolest word she's ever heard.
    • She eventually gives in to temptation and skritches Maverick and Magnum behind the ears. When she's frantically apologizing afterward, she's sporting a Luminescent Blush.
    • When the newspaper prints an article and photograph about Celestia hugging her after the Metallium battle, she angrily claims that she's trying to set the paper on fire with her mind.
  • Power Copying: The Mega Man line's shtick becomes hers starting with the battle against Trifecta, with the techniques taking her weapon and elemental leanings into account.
  • Robot Hair: Beneath her helmet lies a full head of frizzy ocean blue hair, tipped white.
  • Signature Laugh: As a reference to her appearance in the fairly goofy Rockman Zero manga, Leviathan has "Kyahahaha!" as her default laugh.
  • Smug Smiler: When first confronting the Midnight Castles, she delivers a cat-ate-the-canary grin that would do Jetstream Sam proud.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: Her combat prowess is never in doubt. She has a tendency to slip up when dealing with civilians, though, and social norms can escape her at the best of times.
    • Between Ebony's fear of her, Fiver's eerily calm demeanor, and Zig-Zag's enthusiastic love for everypony, Levi's initial interactions with Gray and Ocean's family have her stumbling about at best.
    • During an incident years before the story begins, she receives numerous packages of synthesized Valentine's Day chocolates; given her inability to enjoy them, she decides to return them to the senders in person instead of delegating others to the task. What follows is some of the senders mistaking her presence as a declaration of love, along with something that incites Copy X to pass a law against harassing the Guardians.
    • While she's locked under Illudere's spell, Honoré asks X for permission to date her while she's in the same room. Leviathan is stuck in a loop of stone silence and disbelief until she finally faints.
  • Super-Toughness: Without giving the location's name, note  Leviathan states that she's durable enough to survive trips to the Mariana Trench, the deepest underwater location on Earth.
  • Trapped in Another World: And having read her fair share of fiction, she's not happy about it. Returning to Neo Arcadia to fight against Dr. Weil is her primary goal.
  • Unable to Cry: Lacks a means of shedding tears, like the rest of her race. This doesn't stop her from breaking down after Illudere's Luminous Cruelty releases its hold.
  • Variant Power Copying: Steals Zero's Charged Slash for her own use in-between the events of Zero 2 and 3, modifying it to suit her needs.
  • Weak to Magic: Or to be accurate, a specific type of magic. Leviathan has a subsistent weakness to illusions such as heartsongs, which cause trouble for her time and time again.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Levi suffers from this during her battle with Illudere, being in less than top form on account of her missing equipment and her impaired emotional judgment. Only outside interference prevents her from being destroyed.

Friends And Allies

    The Ghost-Guard Family

Gray Ghost

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gray2_by_evanrank_dezthnw_pre_reference_material.png
Artwork created by EvanRank

"I don't know. It just seemed right."
Hypothetical voice: Ophelia Ramirez, aged up

A pegasus and former Police officer. She is the first pony that Leviathan meets face to face.

  • Affectionate Nickname: "Junie", towards Juniper Leaf.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Albeit unknowingly; Ebony finds Gray's tendency to sleep anywhere she wants, particularly in public, embarrassing to her.
  • Animal Jingoism: Gray notes at one point that due to her feline tendencies, it's rare when she doesn't feel like fleeing from dogs, even those who are friendly.
  • Animal Motifs: Cats. She sleeps wherever and whenever she wants, even out in broad daylight. She has a tendency to turn up in places where she has no right being, pull unintentional jump scares, and behave generally cat-like in most situations. Her Cutie Mark is even a pair of cat's eyes.
  • An Odd Place to Sleep: Is often assumed to be homeless due to most sightings of her involving her napping wherever she wants.
  • Ascended to Carnivorism: While ponies are able to safely eat meat in this setting, it is stated early on that it's an acquired taste and they don't get much benefit from it. In contrast, it is strongly implied that Gray is able to get maximum enjoyment from it, though this is less due to insanity and more due to outside experimentation. On one occasion, she has a staredown with a large fish at an aquarium and comments that she's craving fish sticks. During a later chapter at a griffon-run restaurant, she has a pizza topped with a meat substitute instead of the real deal, probably to keep from making her family uncomfortable. "Day Three, Part One" fully removes any ambiguity by depicting Gray eating a fish raw.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: As Gray herself puts it while donning her S.M.I.L.E. attire:
"Black suit, white shirt, this little pony's gonna bring the hurt... Smooth hat, sweet shades, it's a crime to have them maaaade... Giving monsters far more than they can bear, while stallions go crazy for the sharp-dressed mare..."
  • Battle Theme Music: Gets VanilluxePavilion's remix of Pokemon Platinum's Giratina battle music during her duel against Leviathan.
  • Berserk Button: Take her children out of her sight without her permission? Cue the warning sirens.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Gray is all-around friendly, easygoing, and relaxed to a fault. If she so much as thinks her family is in danger, she'll make whoever's involved regret it.
  • Blade Spam: With her clawed gauntlets, Gray can use a watered-down version of Wolverine's Berserker Barrage. She attempts this on Leviathan towards the end of their duel.
  • Blasé Boast: "I am the cat that walks by herself. And all places are alike to me." The way she herself speaks it makes it come off more as a statement of fact as opposed to any sort of boastfulness, but it doesn't make her any less dangerous.
  • Captain Oblivious: Turns up in places where she really shouldn't be, and doesn't understand why others get mad at her for it.
  • Character Catchphrase: "Just a humble housewife" and variations thereof.
  • Cats Are Superior: Gray takes her 'cat' motif as far as it will go before her duel with Fairy, offering to reduce her three-hit shield to one to make it more even, asking if Fairy herself needs a shield, and cheerfully calling her "fish sticks" when told not to underestimate her.
  • Cheerful Child: Celestia remembers her as this from the time Gray, as a foal, was able to cheer her up with her smile alone.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: When she's not in a stressful or otherwise serious situation, her thinking gravitates more towards "cat" than "pony". Examples include thinking that a sunbeam positioned over a swimming pool's diving board was a nice place to sleep, developing an unnatural craving for fish sticks while at a public aquarium, and forgetting that she was draped in a towel that she was supposed to be drying off with while at a grocery store.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Sports them in her artwork above, and they become visible to others if her smiles show enough teeth. As she is a regular pegasus and not a thestral or similar creature, the significance of these is not known by the general public. They are in actuality one of the few physical traits that she attained from being injected with Zoolinef.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: While Gray doesn't outright show or say what it is, she confirms to Shining Armor that she has one of these in her portfolio. Two things are made clear about it: she has used it to kill in the past, and that using it when she's at anything less than tip-top shape puts her at risk of a heart attack.
  • Deus Exit Machina: Comes down with a cold due to stress and lack of sleep, putting her out of action and forcing Leviathan to face the first half of Mocha's agents alone.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Is seen sleeping happily on a rooftop one moment, then snapping awake and hurrying to investigate when her daughter's scream reaches her. Gray might take any excuse to nap, but she values her family highly.
  • Formerly Fit: Has claimed herself to be this on several occasions on account of her pushing forty years of age. After the first batch of enemy agents are captured, she starts taking up jogging in an attempt to get herself back in shape; and after Fleetfoot shows up and starts putting Maverick and Magnum through the wringer, Gray gets permission to join the workouts.
    • Gray first laments letting herself go when she and Ebony run from a park back to their home, and it takes her longer than Ebony to catch her breath.
    • When bringing up the above forbidden technique, she cites her lack of fitness post-retirement as a reason why she wouldn't be able to pull it off anymore.
  • Freaky Is Cool: Shows no fear when she meets a bipedal pile of sapient metal that's damaged enough for her to catch a glimpse of its insides for the first time, and in fact thanks her for being considerate of Ebony's phobia. This is in part due to her fondness for the horror genre.
  • Ghostly Chill: Is capable of giving off this effect when she's angry enough, which becomes particularly noticeable if it happens in the middle of high temperatures.
  • Glass Cannon: Not compared to other ponies, but to Leviathan herself. The latter notes before their exhibition match that one good hit from her would be liable to seriously injure Gray, if not kill her. Gray's assorted abilities let her hit hard and fast while circumventing conventional defenses, but without Shining Armor's shield, she stands little chance in a fight against one of Neo Arcadia's Guardians.
  • Happily Married: To Ocean Guard, very much so.
  • Housewife: Constantly refers to herself as a "humble housewife", even after it's shown that she's capable of much more, and views her family as her greatest trophies far superior to any thrill she could possibly get from combat.
  • Intangibility: While wearing her gauntlets she is able to phase them through solid objects to attack anything within, a technique which Leviathan dubs "Phantom Slicer".
  • Jump Scare: Has dealt these to Leviathan and Drama Heart a few times, and it is implied that she isn't fully aware of it.
  • Lethal Chef: Quite possibly, if being forced to sign an affidavit saying that she would never cook again after the "cornbread incident" is any indication.
  • Love at First Sight: Being rescued from drowning had an immediate impact on her, causing her to reassess her priorities in life.
  • Love Is a Weakness: Has a psychological chink in her armor that takes the shape of her family and friends, which Leviathan and Drama Heart exploit to let the former take charge in defending Manehattan. First Quarter's agents later do the same thing in an attempt to either keep her from taking the field, or to remove her from the board altogether.
  • Mama Bear: Is a fierce protector of her children, and will act to protect them if she feels that they're in danger. This is downplayed by the fact that she tends to go overboard, forcing her family to pull her off of whoever's she's threatening and read her the riot act.
  • Meaningful Name: "Gray Ghost"note  was at first taken to refer to her stealthy, catlike nature and ability to render herself intangible for short periods. Eventually, as one of her apartment residents notes, it's an apt descriptor for the Ghostly Chill she emits when she's out and out enraged.
  • Mellow Fellow: Due in part to her feline-like tendencies, Gray is very relaxed and nonchalant about most matters, only truly becoming angry if she perceives threats to her family or the city she loves. On the downside she is often too relaxed, sleeping wherever she feels like, accidentally jump-scaring those she knows while not understanding why they're mad, and having little to no resistance whenever her family's upset at her.
  • New Job as the Plot Demands: Her official profile states that she helps support her family by doing odd jobs occasionally. One chapter has her briefly working as a server at a bowling alley. Later, she's roped into working at the Pyre to pay for damages to the building.
  • Noodle Incident: Was involved in the "cornbread incident", cited by her children as the reason why she doesn't cook for them. All we know about it is the aftermath, in which she was forced to sign an affidavit saying that she would never cook again.
  • Older Than She Looks: Is almost forty years old, but has the appearance of a pony half her age. Lampshaded by Ebony.
  • Rescue Romance: Became thoroughly smitten with Ocean Guard after he saved her from drowning.
  • Retired Badass: Served as a Royal Police officer during young adulthood, and was trusted enough to serve as a S.M.I.L.E. agent (using the alias "Untold Walker"). Celestia describes her to Shining Armor as "an absolute beast" in combat. When given a chance to fight Leviathan on an even playing field, she proves it by being able to give the Reploid the same thrill of a fight that Zero gave her.
  • Shout-Out: Her name is one to the Batman: The Animated Series character Gray Ghost, though otherwise they have nothing in common.
  • Sleepyhead: Has a reputation for sleeping out in broad daylight whenever she wants, often resulting in those unacquainted with her to believe she's homeless. At one point, she remarks that she sleeps 16 hours a day.
  • Stealth Expert: Is heavily implied to be one at first. After she retired from active duty and married Ocean Guard, she disappeared off the grid entirely and stymied her fellow S.M.I.L.E. agents until they decided to turn their attentions elsewhere. Any ambiguity disappears when she successfully breaks into Mocha HQ and steals the files on Cocoa's agents despite the security measures present.
  • Super-Speed: Despite letting herself go after her retirement, Gray is still fast enough to snag Drama Heart out of the air after Leviathan throws her out of the path of a lightning strike. Based on this and her performance against the Reploid during their duel, Levi calculates Gray's top speed to be in the vicinity of the speed of sound—something that she believes would impress Harpuia.
  • There Was a Door: Her tendency to crash into windows thinking that they're either open or easily breakable is the basis for the Running Gag involving her.
  • Tornado Move: During her duel with Leviathan, Gray whips up a tornado to defend herself against the Reploid's attacks and force her out of the water.
  • Unwitting Test Subject: Being a young foal at the time, Gray didn't realize she was being kidnapped or injected with Zoolinef, treating her time at the Institute as all fun and games. It's implied that she was more confused than anything when she was reunited with her parents afterward, and it takes over thirty years before she finally learns the truth. It is suggested by the author that Gray did learn when she was old enough that she'd been abducted, but wasn't given all of the details as to what went down.
  • Wacky Parent, Serious Child: Serves as the "wacky parent" to Ebony and Fiver's "serious child". While the foals aren't without their amusing moments, Gray's the family's resident oddball.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: In keeping with the Animal Jingoism above, "Overused Specter-centric Pun" fully establishes her as being afraid of dogs. She later panics and tries unsuccessfully to flee from a dog that only wanted to enthusiastically make her acquaintance.
  • Wolverine Claws: The weapons that Gray brings with her to her duel against Leviathan are a pair of gauntlets with flexible paw-like extensions, terminating in a set of four claws each. They're stated to have some measure of importance to her, as she claims that she feels defenseless without them. The duel proper reveals that she's able to use them to fire off energy waves and rip through metal.

Ebony "Eebon" Evening

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ebony_evening_vector___happy_by_cyanlightning_dfz9rkg_resized.png
Artwork by Cyan Lightning
Hypothetical voice: Illuminata
A unicorn mare and the oldest of Gray's four children. Aspires to be an exterminator.
  • Character Catchphrase: "M-M-MANNEQUIN!"
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: When nopony else is around, she's the one stuck dealing with Gray's oddball behavior.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Has a pitch black coat and gray mane, but is actually a sweet and considerate mare. Just don't leave her alone with any insects.
  • Eccentric Exterminator: Ebony was already a pest hunter at the start of the story, wearing a bandoleer with things like flyswatters and cans of bug spray. She starts showing more signs of this trope when she's trapped in a room infested with bugs, spiders, and (implied) mice. She thoroughly trashes the room while hollering and yelling threats at the top of her voice, including referring to spiders as Eight Legged Freaks.
  • In-Series Nickname: "Eebon".
  • Obliviously Beautiful: An eye-catching and beautiful young pony, but oblivious to most of the attention she gets. This is later suggested to be the result of self-esteem issues brought on by reading a storybook about the Pony of Shadows, with Ebony fearing the Dark Is Evil trope.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Her character profile notes that her favorite clothing item is a pink "Mama's Filly" T-shirt.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Is pediophobic (fear of dolls, and in her case mannequins). This makes being around Leviathan, who looks enough like a mannequin to trigger a fear response, very difficult for her. One of the story's subplots revolves around her trying to overcome this after she realizes how alive Levi really is.
  • You Are Grounded!: Ebony is subject to this by her parents prior to the story's beginning after she steals some cake from one of her friends at a birthday party. When the rest of the family aside from Gray goes out of town to visit a relative, she's left behind. This leads to her being the first to interact with Leviathan directly, which doesn't do her phobia any favors. Later, the incident prompts her to write a letter of apology to her friend, which is swiftly accepted and leads to the two picking up right where they left off.

Pure Energy

Hypothetical voice: The original version of Ben Tennyson
A hyperactive colt and Gray's second-oldest child.
  • Heavy Sleeper: Is claimed to be one of these by Fiver. This makes sense given how active he typically is during the day.
  • Keet: True to his name, he's full of energy. After winning a race against somepony older than he is, he's immediately ready to run again.
  • Shout-Out: His name is one to Information Society. His parents named him for one of the in-universe iteration's songs.
  • The Trickster: Gray's trickster streak is stated to be alive and well in him, and he demonstrates it by being more than Illudere can handle while within enemy territory.
  • Verbal Tic: Has a tendency to repeat himself when he talks.

Five-of-a-Kind, a.k.a. "Fiver"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fiveofakinddemonstratesfreecell.png
Artwork by Berry-Bliss-Sundae
Hypothetical voice: Daria, de-aged

An unusually quiet filly and Gray's second-youngest child.

  • Beat: Always starts off her sentences with ellipses. According to her profile, she does this to make herself seem more emotionless than she really is. Even the statements in her journal are prefaced with them. Her foregoing this is a sign that she's taking things seriously.
  • Creepy Monotone: Talks like this all the time, even when she's concerned or worried.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Will sometimes deliver comments along these lines where her family, especially Gray, is concerned. Her statements towards Calico are more blatant.
"...Stop crying and feed me, you over-emotional idiot."
  • Delicate and Sickly: While the illness is not mentioned outright, it is strongly implied that Fiver had either asthma or something very similar when she was a baby. The efforts of her parents and doctor helped make her situation better to the point that she's mostly healthy by the present day, though by her own admittance she still has the odd day where she has trouble breathing.
  • Emotionless Girl: Is basically Maud Pie Lite. When she's kidnapped, her behavior in this regard is able to unnerve the culprit. The expression seen in her artwork to the right is all but permanent. This was done instinctively in response to the asthma she suffered as a toddler, halting any sort of reaction that might leave her short of breath. She admits to herself, though, that she occasionally finds humor in seeing ponies' reactions to her doing everything with a straight face.
  • In-Series Nickname: Referred to as "Fiver" more often than her full name.
  • Odd Friendship: Develops one with a group of gamblers several times her age while playing cards with them, impressing them with her poker face and general gaming ability. A second, more tentative one later begins developing with Calico Driftwood when she starts teaching the subject how to play FreeCell.
  • Only Sane Man: Functions as this to her family in general when her father isn't around.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Between her stoicism and snark, the 'ice' side of her personality is what everyone else sees. The readers start to see the 'sugar' side when Gray begins crying in response to something she's reading, prompting Fiver to dry her mother's tears and ask if she's alright. After being away from her family for several days, she says in response to some chaos her siblings cause that she "missed these clowns".
  • The Quiet One: While Fiver can and will speak, it won't be with any sort of volume. Even when calling to somepony to wait up so she can catch up, her voice won't rise any higher than usual. She says she could talk normally if she wanted to, but views this quality as being normal for her.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Minor example, Played for Laughs: her method of snapping a stallion back to reality involves yanking a hair out of his mustache. Lampshaded by Leviathan after she leaves.

Zig-Zag, a.k.a. "Zeke"

A colt and Gray's youngest child. Hasn't gained a cutie mark yet.
  • All-Loving Hero: If they're even halfway decent, they're getting a hug. Bushwhacker notes after meeting him that he radiates love "left, right, and center", so much so that he's able to keep the changeling fed with nothing but his physical presence. The last hug he gives Bushwhacker earns him his Cutie Mark and triggers Bushwhacker's metamorphosis.
  • Character Catchphrase: "HUGS!"
  • Commonality Connection: During their meeting, Babs Seed discovers that like her, he's starting to get teased for not having his Cutie Mark yet. This helps her feel a little better about her situation.
  • The Heart: Unrelated to his status as a lovebug, Zeke's the one who gets the family to focus on Juniper Leaf when he concludes that for all of the problems Gray had because of her condition, the one responsible was suffering even more. His instincts prove to be on the money.
  • Strange-Syntax Speaker: Never speaks more than three words at a time. When he needs to get complex messages across, he always divides them up in sets of three.
"Bye, robot lady! Bye, bowling lady! Enjoy your game! Gonna find Energy!"
  • The Nicknamer: According to his profile, he doesn't always address those he talks to by their names. Ebony, for example, is called "bugcatcher mare". Leviathan herself is called "Fairy robot lady".

Ocean Guard

Hypothetical voice: 1990s era David Hasselhoff
Gray's husband.
  • Happily Married: To Gray Ghost, to the point that he puts up with her odd habits without objection and trusts her insight.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: While he's aware of her time as a Policemare, it's implied Ocean has no knowledge of Gray's more secretive work or her time as a S.M.I.L.E. agent. This comes to an end after Maverick and Magnum's trial, when Gray admits that part of her past to her family.
  • Real Men Cook: Is one of the two cooks in the family, the other being Ebony, as Gray is banned from cooking due to the "cornbread incident".
  • Rescue Romance: Was involved in one with Gray after he rescued her from drowning.
  • Satellite Character: Most of his appearances are directly connected to Gray's presence.

Echo

The family cat.
  • Action Pet: To an extent. When Coffee and Drama are confronted with several Magiflies, Echo jumps on one of the drones and throws off its aim enough that it destroys the other, then tries to inconvenience it until the ponies get their acts together. However, he stays clear of the kerfuffle that follows, perhaps knowing that a mere cat has no place in it.
  • Amplified Animal Aptitude: Echo, like a lot of animals in Equestria, has increased intelligence. He is able to tell when things aren't going well for his family and react accordingly, can backtrack a scent halfway across the city, and—more humorously—knows exactly where to swat ponies when he wants them to pay attention to him.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Echo is a black cat, but is actually fairly heroic in his own way, being willing to engage in some nighttime tracking if it means Gray will stop worrying.
  • Expy: Echo's in-universe species is one to the real-life Maine Coon.
  • This Is My Human: When Drama compliments Echo and tells him that he's definitely Gray's cat, his answering "mrr" is meant to correct them: he's not Gray's cat, she's his pony.

    Drama Heart

Drama Heart, a.k.a. "Burning Salamandra"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/salamandra2_by_evanrank_df54fh7_pre.png
Drama in her Salamandra persona. Artwork created by EvanRank.

"I leave my dramatic heart to burn like the salamanders of legend! I hit them with the full force of my emotions... AND I HOLD NOTHING BACK!"

Hypothetical voice: Dr. Grey

The unicorn proprietor of Burning Salamandra's Pyre of Fears, a relatively small-time horror theater. Becomes Leviathan's patron after the Reploid saves her from her own greed.

  • Big Damn Heroes: After being late to Gilbert's morale-boosting party, Drama shows up in time to wake up Shining Armor so the two can interrupt Illudere's illusion and save Leviathan's life.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: Frequently threatens to hug Levi to make her do things that she wants her to do. For most, getting hugged by a pastel pony would be a dream come true, but for Leviathan it's a hassle she doesn't want in light of how they first met.
  • Easily Forgiven: Was let off the hook quickly by Ebony, despite playing a practical joke that unknowingly took advantage of the younger mare's phobia. While Ebony prefers not to be around her due to her general creepiness, she doesn't hold that event against her.
  • Eccentric Artist: Does such things as hugging Leviathan to make her wake up, play up her Salamandra persona in business matters to make her seem insane, and dance around the room to music while cleaning Levi's frame and endoskeleton.
  • Formerly Fat: Downplayed, with Illudere saying that she was pudgy when she was younger. Drama doesn't attempt to correct her.
  • Friendly Address Privileges: Those that Drama views as friends, she gives permission to call her "Sally". As of the end of the "Calmest Waters" two-parter, Gray and Levi are shown to be on that short list.
  • Genki Girl: Drama Heart shows shades of this when she learns that her little sister is pregnant, freaking out and squealing "I'm gonna be an aunt!" repeatedly, tackling Leviathan out of excitement, and bolting for the train station as soon as her suitcase is packed.
  • Heel Realization: Drama realizes that she almost got herself killed by her own greed after Leviathan, who the unicorn had previously been chasing to procure for the Pyre, saved her from a lightning strike. She afterwards cleans Leviathan's frame and gives her a place to stay in order to make amends.
  • Horrifying the Horror: Drama takes great pride in her ability to scare her audience senseless, and is fully immersed in horror itself. However, she has admitted to being scared enough of Gray Ghost on one occasion that she thought the pegasus was going to kill her. In addition she is still a civilian entertainer, and sufficiently unusual or dangerous circumstances can still scare her.
  • Horror Host: Specializes in puppet shows and stageplays that focus on the horror genre. As Salamandra, she passes herself off as a well-traveled storyteller and resident of a Creepy Cemetery. She keeps her stories tame for matinees, knowing that foals are likely to be in the audience, and at one point compares those shows to an average campfire tale. During the evening is when, as her quote above states, she holds nothing back.
  • "I Am" Song: Uses a heavily altered rendition of Nightwish's "Storytime" as a heartsong in order to open her evening performances, describing herself as a restless storyteller who lives to entertain.
  • Large Ham: As befits one who works in Manehattan's entertainment industry, she has no problems delving into this whenever she wants. To-wit, her Cutie Mark is a flaming tragedy-type theatre mask. See her character quote above.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Drama is a civilian entertainer with no inclination to fight and no real combat training. When she finds Leviathan cornered by Illudere's masterwork, her anger at her friend being attacked overrides her fear of the latter's power. She disrupts Illudere's Sigma illusion, then holds the line with a prop knife until Shining Armor can finish the job.
    Take the stage.
  • Married to the Job: Claims to be this in response to Coffee's statement that she's a monster. She muses at one point that being involved with her work in-depth hurt her chances at forming relationships outside of it.
  • Master of Illusion: Illusions are part and parcel of Drama's line of work. She uses them primarily to entertain, but she can use them for their typical purpose of misdirection too.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Wears red contact lenses when in character as Salamandra.
  • Shipper on Deck: Acts like one of these for Leviathan and Zero, though whether she's just doing this to drive Levi batty is up for debate.
  • Shout-Out: According to the story's Trivia page, the author used Dr. Emily Grey as a template for her personality. Some of her lines have gotten repurposed for the story, depending on the context.
"I knew today was going to be a good day!"
    "We've got a runner!"
"Excuse me? When somepony tells you to leave them alone, you leave them alone."
"No silly, I'm Drama Heart. Ha! Dad joke!"
  • Spontaneous Choreography: This is her specialty. Drama is hyped up on emotion and her love for horror and the theater at all times, being able to whip up heartsongs almost at will and taking advantage of this to kick off her evening performances with a bang.
  • Tentacle Rope: One of her favorite spells involves creating magical tendrils to function as this, using them on different occasions against Leviathan and Gray. It's later revealed that this is her self-defense spell of choice, in contrast to the magic beams used by some unicorns (which she views as being too magic-intensive).
  • Tranquil Fury:
    • Is coldly furious when she finds out how her staircase is destroyed, roping the one responsible into working for her until the debt is paid off.
    • Is also furious when she confronts Illudere over her wrongdoings, but manages to stay completely calm the entire time.

    Turkey Bowl
Hypothetical voice: Michael Rosenbaum

A professional bowler.

  • Improbable Aiming Skills: The nature of his special talent: whatever he aims at, he'll hit. This is demonstrated when his team matches up against Ponyville's, and he breaks out his talent to match Donny strike for strike.
  • Out of Focus: Turkey Bowl was one of the first ponies to learn of Leviathan's origins, and he ended up getting very little focus after his initial appearance. He comes back briefly in a chapter that takes Levi to the local bowling alley, then disappears again almost immediately after. Briefly lampshaded by Leviathan while pondering the company she keeps.

    Bossa Nova
Hypothetical voice: Boa Marigold, fused with an earthquake

The minotaur owner of The Big and Taur Shop.

  • Because I'm Good At It: This is her stated reason for running her clothing shop. She's good at it, as Leviathan sees when she comes in to purchase a coat, but she'd much rather be doing more physical work.
  • Bilingual Bonus: The first few letters of her name, 'bos', come from bos taurus, the Latin scientific name for domesticated cattle. This is an unintentional case, as the author admitted in response to a comment that he was not aware of it when he came up with it.
  • The Lad-ette: When she's not being a grouch, she's this instead. She considers arm wrestling to be serious business, hollers when she wins, and loudly encourages her fans to cheer for her opponent if they gave her a good match. She prefers having a job where she can use her strength, and while she's good at her clothing-related job, she resents having it.
  • Perpetual Frowner: As good as she is at her job, she only works it because she needs to make a living. She would much rather put her immense strength to work, and because she can't, her dealings with others are dour and to the point. It's only after Leviathan challenges her to an arm wrestling match that she starts smiling again.
  • Third-Person Person: Has a tendency to speak like this, and drops it only rarely. It's implied in the second newspaper chapter, though not confirmed outright, that she might have picked up this habit from her homeland's Rekka Expy.

    Princess Celestia
The ruler of Equestria, and Gray's former boss.

    Shining Armor
Captain of the Royal Guard, and boyfriend of Princess Cadance.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Intervenes at the last possible moment during Drama and Illudere's short duel where previously he'd been asleep, reflecting the latter's own Luminous Cruelty back at her.
  • Combat Referee: Serves as one during Leviathan and Gray's duel, stating the rules for the match and periodically chiming in to let the combatants know how much time is left.

    Princess Cadance
    I-Like-My-Sugar-With-Coffee-And-Cream

I-Like-My-Sugar-With-Coffee-And-Cream

Hypothetical voice: Felina Feral
An officer with Manehattan's Royal Police.
  • Mission Control: Is designated as this to Leviathan when she starts chasing down Mocha's agents, serving as the Alia to her X.
  • Motor Mouth: When she gets very nervous or anxious, her speech runs together at high speed. This is depicted in the text as having a dash in-between each word.
  • Overly Long Name: The full name is seen above. She typically shortens it to Coffee-and-Cream, or just 'Coffee'', in her interactions with others.
  • Private Detective: Coffee's original goal in life was to be this, but she ultimately gave it up after her mentor in the business got into trouble with the law.
  • Shout-Out: Per the author's comments, her name is one of the lyrics from Beastie Boys' song "Intergalactic".

Antagonists

    Alexandrite

Alexandrite

Hypothetical voice: Blizzard

A wealthy socialite with a grudge against Drama Heart.

  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After the Pyre raid fails and she is confronted by Leviathan, she later bolts for Los Pegasus after admitting that she'd ordered the raid out of a sense of deep fear and paranoia.
    The Midnight Castle Gang

The Midnight Castle Gang

A group of thieves who are hired by Alexandrite to steal everything within the Pyre's confines. They serve as Leviathan's first opponents in her new environs.

  • Boxed Crook: Gargoyle and Knight become these during "Metallium". Due to a lack of capable pegasi, the Manehattan Police chief ropes them into delivering an emergency message to Canterlot, while making it clear that they would never be able to set hoof in any town again if they deviated off course. The two of them officially join Leviathan's team after Metallium is defeated, and are assigned to work with her as part of their community service following their trial.
  • Curbstomp Battle: Are on the receiving end of this, with Fairy dropping them in only two moves despite their implied skill and her poor physical condition.
  • Starter Villain: The gang as a whole comes into conflict with Leviathan during her first night in Manehattan, and are the first enemies she faces off against.
  • Theme Naming: All the members share names that are related in some way to castles. Bastion, Iron Gates, and Barricade—the earth ponies of the group—all pertain to the defenses of such fortresses. The pegasi, Knight and Gargoyle, both have names that are heavily associated with castles, whether as defenders or as decorations. Finally the unicorns, Moat and Bridge, note  both involve entry into the castle's confines.
    Cocoa Mocha (WARNING: Contains Spoilers!)

Cocoa Mocha

Hypothetical voice: William Afton
The aged head of one of the richest businesses in Manehattan.
  • Evil Sounds Raspy: Part and parcel of being old, in the process of dying, and with very few morals to his name. His character profile makes this clear by stating that his approximate voice is that of the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise's William Afton.
  • Evil Old Folks: Is old enough to have two teenage granddaughters, is dying from the effects of old age, and is a bit senile. Yet, he has some sort of plan to knock Celestia off her throne, and the agents with which to enact it.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Talked Metallium into becoming one of his agents by making her believe that Celestia's control of the sun was in danger of slipping. It's implied that the rest of his elites were brought into the fold this way as well.
  • Old Master: Was the grandmaster of his family's school of martial arts, and lasted long enough to teach most of what he knew to his grandchildren before his passing. According to them, he was potent enough to punch clean holes in solid steel. A threat by Quarter implies that Cocoa was capable of doing the same to dragon hide, a much tougher barrier.

First Quarter

Not merely Cocoa Mocha, but an entire string of ponies leading back to before Celestia and Luna first defeated Discord. "First Quarter" is just the name they prefer.
  • Affably Evil: Legitimately cares for and remembers all of the children they've ever had, endorses Calico's crush on Ignition for grins and giggles, and holds jovial conversations with their underlings. It's a bit easy to forget that they have a centuries-long grudge against Celestia, intend to depose her, and plan to destroy Leviathan, among other things.
  • Benevolent Boss: Doesn't throw a fit if their agents fail or otherwise don't meet their expectations, knowing that they're not the ones at fault. They focus their ire on Leviathan instead. They also take note of how hard their magitechnicians are working and decide to give them two weeks vacation once the coup is complete.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: It is implied from the flood of memories that Hazelnut absorbs—including a fragment that suggests that they survived an encounter with Omega—that part of their past wasn't very pretty. It is later confirmed that Quarter was a unicorn soldier in one prior life, and that Omega had slaughtered his entire squad before his eyes; only a last-ditch disintegration spell that finished what Zero started kept Quarter's then-current body from meeting the same fate.
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • Claims to be a firsthand witness of Celestia and Luna's defeat of Discord, states the latter's fate to be the only thing she will agree with Celestia on, and warns their colleagues to stay away from his statue.
    • They prefer not to target civilians unless they're actively getting in the way of their plans.
    • They briefly consider recruiting Derpy after hearing about the mailmare's impressive stamina, but change their mind after hearing about her strabismus. Their rationale is that if she's dealing with any issues from her condition, then their plans would just pile on the stress.
  • Familial Body Snatcher: Uses an enchanted locket of some type to usurp control of another pony at death. When Cocoa dies, he steals his granddaughter Hazelnut's body and leaves her mind to drown in a sea of his memories. Later chapters imply that this ability to do so is restricted to Cocoa's family line.
  • Freudian Excuse: Omega slaughtering their squad left Quarter with a deep-seated fear and hatred of Reploids, making them see him whenever they lay eyes on Leviathan. The 2nd Anniversary chapter reveals that if Omega had never appeared, their timetable would not have been accelerated after Leviathan's arrival, and their coup would have fizzled out on its own.
  • I Control My Minions Through...: Several different tactics. They will adapt their methods to fit any situation pertaining to their forces.
    • Evil Versus Oblivion. Metallium was lured to Quarter's side in part because an alternative solution to Celestia's control of the sun—one that was better than the alleged possibility of the sun drifting out of control and roasting/freezing the entire world—was being touted.
    • Loyalty. All of them are unquestioningly loyal to Quarter and follow their orders out of respect for them. Quarter being both Affably Evil and a Benevolent Boss plays a large part in this.
    • Material Benefits. Quarter makes sure that as long as everypony's under their roof, they have what they need. This includes such things as being able to feed Calico's bottomless pit of a stomach, and giving his changeling agent a better place to live than Chrysalis's hive.
    • Power. Due both to long experience and the fighting style they created and perfected, Quarter is the strongest figure in their organization, bar none. When they briefly meet for the first time, Leviathan's systems classify them as Class-S in comparison to everypony else's Class-B.
  • I Have Many Names: They've been many ponies throughout their existence, and as such have used all of the names they've had for the sake of going with the flow. The name they prefer is one that they call themselves, instead of one used by whichever pony's body they've stolen. Their birth name as revealed in "Which Hazel?" is White Rook.
  • Really 700 Years Old: The pony that would eventually call themselves "First Quarter" has been walking the world since before Discord's reign more than a thousand years ago, jumping bodies with the aid of an enchanted locket whenever their current one dies.
  • Shipper on Deck: Decides to act as one for Ignition and Calico Driftwood just for laughs.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Chocolate milk, with Quarter saying at one point that they'd hate to have a body that was lactose-intolerant.
  • Wicked Cultured: Played for laughs: they harbor a fondness for nice suits and classical music, yes, but their drink of choice is chocolate milk. Avoids being Wicked Pretentious in that they're not trying to be cultured.
  • You Have Failed Me: Very much defied. Quarter isn't quick to anger or violence if their agents and servants fail in their work, saying that such behavior would be counteractive to their goals. They do abandon the scientists on the Zoolinef project when it fails, but even then the worst that happened to them was their arrest and imprisonment.
    Ignition

Ignition

Cocoa's personal butler and most loyal servant.
  • The Comically Serious: Agent #6 remembers him as a skilled dancer from a prior meeting, so she doesn't take him as seriously as the other agents despite his status and serious demeanor. When they meet in-story for the first time, they have this exchange:
Agent #6: "Ignition, mah stallion! How've you been? You still cutting up dance floors?"
Ignition: (dry and unamused) "With hedge clippers."
  • Classical Music Is Cool: Is planted on this side of the argument, having Moztrot playing in the background during a meeting with his boss and referring to those who don't like it as plebians.
  • The Dragon: Cocoa's second-in-command. Ignition is in charge of his agents' mission briefings, and all of the orders given to them are funneled through him. He is also the one who works the hardest to keep Cocoa's plots hidden from the outside world.
  • Meaningful Name: 'Ignition' is the one who lights the fires for his boss, so to speak, by coming up with plans and putting them in motion for better or for worse.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: After Gray pulls a fast one on him the first time they interact, what he'd gotten himself into sinks into his mind after she leaves. His profanity-laden outburst gets cut off by the narration before it begins.
  • Workaholic: Ignition is in charge of a wide variety of duties related to both the Mocha Corporation and Cocoa's faction, as well as helping look after the Mocha twins. He never complains about his workload, and at one point somepony wonders how he manages to keep going. After his failure to capture Gray, Quarter concludes that this trait is starting to work against him and decides to handle the scheming themselves.
    Cocoa's agents
  • Morality Kitchen Sink: Though they all believe they are doing the right thing by siding with Cocoa, the agents are all over the place in terms of alignment. Several, such as Glintlock and Metallium, take delight in trying to kill Leviathan without any regard for outsiders' feelings. Others, such as Statuette and Bushwhacker, have decent to good hearts. And Illudere, meanwhile, is just straight-up insane.
  • Never Hurt an Innocent: Are all under orders not to cause physical harm to civilians unless they oppose the agents directly. Even Metallium, who forces ponies to serve her at the resort, obeys this rule.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: All of the agents except Metallium wear full-body suits of dragon scale mail into battle, theoretically letting them tank incredible amounts of damage. At first, enchanted metal on the chest and neck was required to prevent the wearers from being subject to the laws of physics after being struck, but after Leviathan proves herself quick to exploit this weakness, steps are quickly taken to remove it and grant the wearers the nigh-invulnerability promised.

Agent #1: Trifecta, prev. "Springboard"

Hypothetical voice: Osmosis Jones

An earth pony who functioned as The Mole in the city's Royal Police.

  • Achilles' Heel: Trifecta's dragon scale mail is equipped with several metallic pieces, both enchanted to prevent him from feeling anything that strikes the armor. When the pieces are destroyed, his armor can no longer protect him despite being fully intact. In addition, his flare emitters are responsible both for his fire abilities and his double-jumping; if they overheat, he can't use either.
  • Does Not Like Spam: He isn't particularly fond of cheese. The S.M.I.L.E. agent who erases his memory does something about that.
  • Double Jump: Is capable of doing this thanks to his flare emitters. When the emitters overheat, however, it takes away most of his evasiveness.
  • Graceful Loser: To a degree. When Leviathan's assault becomes too much for him, he backs down and surrenders. However, as he believes that one of the other agents or his boss will succeed where he failed, he stays defiant while being taken away.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Due to his betrayal, he gets his memories regarding S.M.I.L.E. erased after his capture.
  • Meaningful Name: Changed his name to "Trifecta" to reflect the fact that he was juggling allegiances to the Police, S.M.I.L.E., and Mr. Mocha. After his memories of S.M.I.L.E. are erased, this no longer applies.
  • Playing with Fire: Of the first four agents, he's the fire specialist. His armor's hooves are equipped with improvised flamethrowers called 'flare emitters', and he carries a fuel tank enchanted to refill its stores over time.
  • The Mole: Functioned as this in the Royal Police department after joining Mr. Mocha. His intel is what helps the group to break Bastion and Gates out of prison, though he outs himself in the process. Because of this, Leviathan decides to go after him first.

Agent #2: Glintlock

Hypothetical voice: A combination of the Sniper and Engineer
A hunter from Griffonstone wanted Alive there for his illegal depredations.
  • Automatic Crossbow: Glintlock was previously trained in the use of a normal crossbow, but eventually traded it in for an illegal repeater. His battle against Leviathan sees him use a heavily enchanted version of the weapon that not only returns his ammunition to its magazine within a short time after use, letting him fire as much as he wants, but can also pierce the toughest of metals. It ultimately ends up destroyed by Leviathan, however.
  • Evil Poacher: Is wanted in the Griffon Kingdom for hunting illegally, and has thrown in his lot with Cocoa Mocha knowing that the latter intends to remove Celestia from her throne.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Has trained with a crossbow from childhood on, and is skilled enough with it to shoot down a fly at the weapon's maximum range while taking wind speed and the fly's movements into account. This alone allows him to give Leviathan trouble during their battle.
  • Non-Elemental: Of the first four agents, Glintlock is the one without an element specialty, fighting with an enchanted crossbow instead of fire, ice or electricity.
  • Shout-Out: Personality and skill-wise, he's a combination of the Engineer and the Sniper, with the voice to match.
  • Sinister Shades: Wears a pair of shield-type sunglasses to protect his eyes, which are noted to have increased sensitivity to light. Has made no secret of the fact that he intends to collect Leviathan's head.
  • Trap Master: Glintlock layers Median Park with snares and traps, with anything that triggers them being subjected to automated crossbow fire. Leviathan is forced to disarm or destroy the traps before she can proceed, and even then she has to deal with extra crossbows set up at Glintlock's arena of choice.

Agent #3: Metallium

Hypothetical voice: Ursula, slightly deepened
A dragon, and the group's physical powerhouse.
  • Achilles' Heel: Her mouth and internal organs are not as heavily defended as the rest of her.
  • Breath Weapon: Breathes pink fire hot enough to glass the beach's sand.
  • The Brute: To mirror the Zero series' tendency to have one of these in every game, note  Metallium serves this role among Mocha's agents.
  • Enemy-Detecting Radar: The equipment she was given is implied to function as this, as it lets her keep track of Leviathan below ground. Defeating Metallium also serves to unlock Levi's own radar.
  • Fast Tunneling: Her specialty. Between her natural abilities and the equipment supplied to her by Mocha, her tunneling is very fast and efficient.
  • Fatal Flaw: Pride. Metallium has all of the arrogance that comes with being a dragon, and puts too much stock in her own abilities and strength. This leads to her downfall when she underestimates just what Leviathan's willing to do in order to get the job done.
  • The Hedonist: Shows shades of this when Leviathan first meets her, relaxing outside of a resort and guzzling down drinks that a browbeaten pony is bringing her.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Hits hard, having all of the strength that a dragon of her size is expected to have, and she isn't slow by any means.
  • Metal Muncher: Canonically, her race eats gemstones. Here, she plans to kill Leviathan by eating her. Levi privately wonders if she's even capable of handling ceratanium.
  • Psycho Pink: Her back ridge and eyes are an off-putting shade of pink to match the fire she breathes, and she has no qualms wanting to kill Leviathan.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Celestia showing up after Metallium's fight with Leviathan, coupled with an unexpected summons from Dragon Lord Torch, prompts her to mentally apologize to Cocoa Mocha and take off for home.
  • Shock and Awe: The electrical specialist of the first four agents, though she obviously doesn't use it directly against Leviathan on account of her immunity to it. She instead uses it to defend herself against Levi's Spirit of the Ocean, and to augment her digging ability.
  • Technicolor Fire: Of a hot-pink color. Leviathan is unamused by the pun.

Agent #4: Statuette

A professional figure skating pegasus turned rebel against the Crown.
  • Dance Battler: Incorporates ice dancing and figure skating into her combat style.
  • Feather Fingers: Exercises this in full against Leviathan, using one of her wings to wield her sword at the cost of her flight ability.
  • Graceful Loser: Lays down her weapon when it becomes clear she's outmatched, and holds a calm conversation with Levi afterward.
  • Kill It with Ice: Her ranged attacks involve projectiles made of dry ice, and freezing slashes fired from her skates.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: It's strongly implied that she gets her knowledge of S.M.I.L.E. attained from Trifecta erased after her capture.
  • Royal Rapier: Statuette strives to carry herself with class, dignity, and elegance at all times, keeping her cool and regaining it quickly during those rare times when she loses it. To-wit, an ice-empowered rapier is her weapon of choice.
  • The Stool Pigeon: Eventually becomes the Innocent Ingrid variety of this after being coerced with her favorite food. After being told what her compatriots were up to at the time, she unhesitatingly denounces them to the Police and tells them what she knows.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Sandwiches made with Grand Pear's pear jam. She never leaves home without at least one jar. It is later discerned that it has to specifically be Grand Pear's brand of jam, as she will turn up her nose at any other kind. She loves it enough that she'll actively forego her standard demeanor, diving across a table while her forelegs and wings are restrained if that's what it takes to eat some.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: The reason she gives for joining Cocoa Mocha and taking part in the attacks against the city is that wherever she went to perform, she'd see the rich living it up while the poor struggled to get by. From there, she concluded that Celestia wasn't doing enough to help ponies support themselves, and threw her support behind somepony she believed had what it took to do things right.

Agent #5: Illudere, prev. "Sugarplum Spotlight"

Hypothetical voice: Alternatively Harley Quinn or Withered Chica
An illusionist with her mind on a separate planet. Has a past history with Drama Heart.
  • Achilles' Heel: Her illusions are reliant on her ability to channel magic. If her horn is struck, it briefly destabilizes or destroys any that are active. Levi tries to exploit this weakness by deliberately targeting Illudere's horn.
  • Amplifier Artifact: Illudere's dragon scale armor is enchanted to provide a constant boost to her spellcasting, letting her put more energy into her illusions and effectively turning her into a walking nightmare.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: During Day One of the "Vignettes" set of chapters, Pure Energy plays an unknown prank on Illudere (later revealed to be him trapping her in her own room). This drives her to angrily protest on the story's FAQ blog post out of nowhere, demanding that the author release her from whatever Energy had done. Her insanity is implied to be responsible, as none of the other characters have shown these sorts of capabilities.
  • Character Catchphrase: Uses "Infidel!" when addressing somepony who makes her mad, or when she otherwise starts getting truly angry.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Can sometimes focus on a situation if matters are very serious, but otherwise is certifiably insane. When asked whether she achieved secondary objectives on a certain mission, she claims that she's a "dainty sugarplum" in a dazed tone.
  • Driven to Madness: Accidentally drove herself insane with a spell she was trying to learn in an attempt to one-up Drama Heart. The only reason she isn't still in an asylum is because Cocoa Mocha broke her out.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Illudere adores Ralph the crab, getting angry when he's insulted and going so far as to have a terrarium and plenty of food ready for him at her designated safe house. Her attachment to him is strong enough that he manifests within her self-inflicted dream world.
  • Even Evil Can Be Loved: Illudere's parents visit her at the hospital after her defeat leaves her permanently comatose, lamenting what they did wrong with her and asking Leviathan to treat her and Sugarplum as separate ponies. They even leave a childhood toy on her bed next to her.
  • Forgot About His Powers: During a brief segment where Pure Energy steals Ralph from her, Illudere is angry enough while pursuing him that she forgets that she can just use her spellcraft to put an end to the chase early. It happens again when Drama calls her out on everything wrong with her, leading her to forego most of her magic entirely and just resort to using a knife.
  • Fourth-Wall Observer: Most likely due to her insanity. During one meeting of the agents, she tells Calico that the author wrote themselves into a corner regarding their plan's lynchpin, leaving the kirin confused.
  • Head Pet: Or 'Hair Pet', as the case may be. The group's first face-to-face meeting with First Quarter sees Illudere with a crab, of all things, hanging from her mane with its pincers. She does nothing to remove it, and treats any inquiries she makes as if they come from it. Its name is later revealed to be Ralph. The crab doesn't share Illudere's sentiments, being amiable in its own way towards those it interacts directly with.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Is victimized by her own Luminous Cruelty at the end of her fight with Leviathan, thanks to Shining Armor.
  • Lotus-Eater Machine: One of her most potent illusions, the Luminous Cruelty, forces the target asleep and makes them experience another lifetime altogether.
  • Master of Illusion: True to her name, she is capable of generating powerful illusions, making her an invaluable asset to the group in spite of her insanity. Among other things, she has used them to trick two pegasi into crashing into a billboard and incapacitate Leviathan.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Her true name, as disclosed in her character profile, is Sugarplum Spotlight. It isn't until "The Calmest Waters" chapter that someone actively refers to her by that name. Previously, she had been known only as "Illudere" or "Agent #5".
  • The Pig-Pen: After losing her sanity, Illudere more or less stops taking care of herself and has to be forced to bathe. Her sweaty odor is strong enough that Echo is able to backtrack it across the city. She continues to keep her teeth clean, but only so that she can deliver a standout Slasher Smile.
  • The Rival: According to her profile, she was originally one towards Drama Heart in Baltimare prior to being sent to an asylum. Even with the rivalry long gone, her memory of it is apparently strong enough that she can detect heartsongs sung by Drama from miles away.
  • Slasher Smile: Delivers one that the narration describes as proof that she's never had serious dental work done. In addition, the reason she takes care of her teeth even when she starts letting the rest of herself go is so that other ponies can see her "innocent smile".
  • Summon Bigger Fish: Her reaction to Levi figuring out her weakness is to will Sigma into existence.
  • Super-Hearing: Has an unknown variety of this that lets her hear Salamandra's heartsongs from across Manehattan.
  • Through the Eyes of Madness: Due to a powerful illusion spell backfiring and turning her insane over time, what she sees and hears is different from everypony else. When Cocoa Mocha broke her out of an asylum, she saw him as a superhero. At times she can perceive the real world when matters are serious, but those are few and far between.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Does this to Leviathan not once but twice, the first time with her Luminous Cruelty, and the second time with an illusion of Honoré that was acting like he wanted to kiss her.
  • Your Mind Makes It Real: When amped by her armor, Illudere effectively becames the mistress of her own little domain, with her illusions capable of manifesting as many different forms as she likes and all of them capable of doing serious harm. She can even create reinforcements this way.

Agent #6: Calico Driftwood

Hypothetical voice: Yukari Tanizaki
A misguided, wandering kirin wanted in Equestria for theft.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: There isn't anything that indicates that Calico is worse than average-looking for her species, but all of her bad habits clash with Ignition's professionalism and duties to the point that the latter would just as soon not have anything to do with her attraction to him.
  • Battle Boomerang: Is stated to have trained with these, and uses them as her weapon of choice.
  • Berserk Button: Takes being insulted very poorly, almost going full Nirik at one point after Gates tells her something she misunderstands. Her official profile clarifies that she specifically hates being called a cow—which she tends to mishear in a similar vein to Buggy the Clown when the word is used in other contexts—as well as anything implying that she's overweight.
  • Big Eater: Considers five hayburgers, three carrot dogs and a pitcher of orange juice to be a light lunch.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Shows shades of this when angry at her home village's leader, going from saying that she's going to give her a piece of her mind to considering whether or not to smother the village in eighty acres' worth of blueberry pie filling.
  • Everyone Has Standards: After Calico meets Fiver and fails to get any sort of dialogue or emotion from her, she begins believing that the foal had somehow been to the kirin's home village and gotten Silenced. This leads her to protest that they shouldn't have done that to a random child, and she expresses relief after Fiver finally starts talking.
  • Heel Realization: Strongly implied. When Fiver demonstrates the likely reason why the authorities were on her case for stealing a refrigerator, Calico vanishes for the rest of the evening and is later heard that night weeping. She sends a reimbursement to the store owners shortly thereafter.
  • Loud Sleeper Gag: Her snoring is referred to as "whale songs" by her own boss.
  • Meaningful Name: Has a tri-color pattern (white coat, cream-ish mane, and gray-blue scales, a.k.a. "diluted") and a case of wanderlust. While meaningful, it also fits the kirins' naming scheme from the source material.
  • Mysterious Past: Calico has refused to discuss herself or her race with others; only the fact that she's called a kirin is known, and that only because Mr. Mocha saw fit to include that fact in her personnel file. This helps avoid any discrepancies with her species' debut episode, which would have happened differently if knowledge of her race had been widespread. The readers at least get to see that the incident that led to her village getting torched happened while she was out on one of her trips, and her frustration upon her discovery of it led her to flee the village for good.
  • Walking the Earth: Is stated to be a born wanderer, explaining why she's far from her homeland before it's officially introduced in MLP proper. This is later clarified to be a result of her being away when her village was burned down, and subsequently taking umbrage with the residents Silencing themselves.

Agent #7: Bushwhacker

Hypothetical voice: Bob Newhart, early 1960s
A seemingly normal earth pony. Perhaps too normal...
  • Apologetic Attacker: Doesn't seem to entirely like the course he's on, prompting him to apologize to Gray the first time the agents antagonize her directly.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: "Off Your Marks, Get Set, G_o_" does little to hide the revelation that Bushwhacker is a changeling, and that he's flat-out supporting Cocoa Mocha's desired coup. However, his in-universe dossier and Calico both take note of his all-around respectful and friendly disposition. To-wit, he was living peacefully in Ponyville before Cocoa summoned him to Manehattan. He later helps keep Zig-Zag entertained, utilizing his transformations for the latter's amusement.
  • Defector from Decadence: According to him, although his circumstances aren't the greatest, he feels his current life in Ponyville—after being assigned there by Cocoa Mocha—is still better than living under the likes of Chrysalis.
  • Love Redeems: By returning Zig-Zag's excess love to him, he undergoes the same physical metamorphosis that the rest of his race would later experience.
  • Meaningful Name: Played for laughs, in that his current name was earned because he accidentally destroyed someone's foliage.
  • Token Good Teammate: Of the agents—who otherwise consist of The Mole, an Evil Poacher, a mildly sadistic dragon, a snooty figure skater with high standards for elegance, an insane unicorn, a selfish kirin who wants any excuse to enjoy life to the fullest, and expies of fictional mercenaries—Bushwhacker is the most kind-hearted and good-natured. He had previously behaved like his fellow changelings on account of being constantly hungry, but spending a few years in Ponyville helped awaken this side of his personality.

Agents #8 and #9: Bastion and Iron Gates

The (former) leaders of the Midnight Castle Gang.
  • Brutal Honesty: Gates isn't afraid to tell others what he thinks of them, even if that someone is his own boss.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Bastion shows shades of this. When Ignition tells him to keep his mouthy partner in line, the thief's response is that he'll require hazard pay. Agent #4 has to force herself not to laugh at this.
  • Deflector Shield: Gates carries one via his specialized armor, which at one point he uses to help cover the agents' retreat after their first encounter with Gray. Fitting for the Felix expy.
  • Devious Daggers: Gates is stated to love his combat knives, using them as his primary weapons.
  • Expy: Their personalities, the latter's choice of weaponry, the selected background music for their appearance post-breakout,note  and the chapter title being an anagram all heavily suggest that they're ponified versions of Locus and Felix. The key difference between both groups is that there's no evidence to suggest that Gates has been manipulating Bastion. Confirmed by the author in the Chapter's Notes for "Sabotages Tin". Gates at one point alludes to the two of them once having worked with someone named "Masonry", suggesting that an expy of Mason Wu exists somewhere too.
  • Invisibility Cloak: Fitting for the Locus expy, Bastion's dragon scale mail comes equipped with a cloaking device of some sort.
  • Psychotic Smirk: The photo of Gates attached to his in-universe dossier has him sporting one of these smiles, coupled with a raised eyebrow in a blatant reference to the Dreamworks Face.

Other

    Charity Kindheart
    Gilbert
A griffon sales clerk at a grocery store. Eventually becomes a fan of Leviathan's.
  • Jive Turkey: A lesser version of this. It isn't a major focus of his character, but he'll still use slang whenever he feels like it, even introducing Leviathan to the term "chillax".
    Buried Lede
    Caramel and Hazelnut Mocha

Caramel and Hazelnut Mocha

Hypothetical voice: Morgan Berry as the Yellow Ranger, as heard on DEATH BATTLE!
The granddaughters of Cocoa, and the heirs to the business he runs.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Between the two of them, they refer to each other as "Carrie" and "Hazel".
  • Grand Theft Me: Hazelnut becomes a victim of this, no thanks to First Quarter.
  • Heir to the Dojo: Are both students of their grandfather's personal combat style, though they're only at 'iron' compared to Cocoa's 'steel'.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: According to their profiles, Hazelnut feels confined by their lifestyle and values freedom as a result of it.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: In contrast to the above, Caramel secretly harbors a desire for friendship on account of their parents no longer being around.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Neither of the two know anything about what their grandfather is planning. Cocoa knows that they're too good-hearted not to go to the Police if they catch wind of anything.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: While both could qualify for this, Caramel in particular wants to have friends who don't see her as just another rich pony. Spending a solid chunk of her time being home-schooled and rarely interacting with others her age adds to this.
  • Parental Abandonment: It's heavily implied, both in their profiles and in the story proper, that their parents are deceased. The causes for this are unknown.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: According to the twins' profiles, Caramel is remarkably girly, dignified and elegant, prefers activities that exercise the mind, and wishes to have genuine friends. In contrast, Hazelnut is tomboyish and somewhat crass, doesn't care as much about her appearance, enjoys physical activities, and is more interested in freedom than friendship.
  • Spider-Sense: The both of them possess a honed danger sense, stated to be an important part of their martial arts style. It lets them detect Leviathan when she's in proximity to them, though it isn't advanced enough to let them know that she's a living being.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Hazelnut is stated to be going through a tomboy phase, being a bit more rough with her speech and preferring suits over the dresses that Caramel favors. Her sister, meanwhile, emphasizes elegance and personal appearance.

    Limefrost Spiral

Limefrost Spiral

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rkacrue0rfpqb2manqrwz2fme8r_97io_owdw00qtg.png
Pictured: beauty. Not pictured: brains.
Hypothetical voice: Dee Dee

A young and talented artist. Good-looking if her picture to the right is anything to go by, but doesn't keep all the lights on upstairs. Her Cutie Mark is a bowl of vanilla ice cream garnished with a lime slice.

  • Butt-Monkey: Whenever she appears, bad things happen to her due to happenstance and her own ditziness.
    • She has been splashed by a roof-hopping Leviathan, and subsequently rejected by a prospective date whom she'd kept waiting at the door.
    • Her next appearance has her be blocked from entering Median Park (which was occupied by Glintlock at the time, unknown to her), and fall unceremoniously on a patch of ice (created by Leviathan) while attempting to enter Madisoat Square Garden and check out Statuette.
    • Her attempt at catching Echo for companionship leads to several someponies trying to mug her in an alley.
    • She appears at Median Park in order to paint a picture of a party, but is victimized by a sleep spell alongside everybody else.
  • Felony Misdemeanor: Per her character profile, she views getting splashed by Leviathan while the Reploid was roof-hopping as this; annoying, yes, but hardly worth nursing a grudge over.
  • Genius Ditz: Described as "forgetful and not very bright outside her element". Her first appearance has her completely forgetting the time she was supposed to meet Smooth Beat, leaving him to wait at the door while she wasted time sunbathing. With that said, she has enough skill at painting that Cocoa selected her to paint portraits of him and his grandkids, so she has at least one good thing going for her.
  • Gold Digger: Is already doing well financially, but wants to do even better by marrying somepony richer than she is. She's terrible at it, as she's yet to even start a first date, though not for a lack of trying.
  • Hidden Depths: "The Calmest Waters" shows that she's surprisingly skilled at self-defense. She doesn't react to the fact that two thugs are trying to rob her while she's pursuing Echo, instead knocking one out and incapacitating the other without giving it a second thought.
  • Loony Fan: Is one of these towards Statuette, trying desperately to get her to autograph something while the agent is in the middle of getting arrested.
  • Missing Mom: During one What If? in a shout-out to Support Your Local Sheriff, Limefrost implies that she hasn't seen her mother in quite some time.
Limefrost: "I'm not going to be seen in public with you if you're looking like my dear old departed mother!"
    Leviathan: "Your mother's dead?"
    Limefrost: "Nope. She just departed."
  • Shout-Out: Her name is one to the planetary system of the same name from Descent II.

    Juniper Leaf

Juniper Leaf

A scientist who indirectly works for Cocoa Mocha decades before the story begins.
  • The Atoner: Has become this in the present day, having opened a daycare and babysitting service in memory of the kidnapped foal. What she did still weighs heavily on her mind.
  • Cool Old Lady: Went from being a morally-challenged scientist in her youth to a competent daycare owner and babysitter 35 years later (25 of which she spent in prison). Pure Energy remembers her for the delicious sandwiches she made, while Fiver recalls Juniper helping her read a book implied to be above her grade level.note
  • Easily Forgiven: The foal she experimented on eventually forgives Juniper for her role in those events, citing the regret that she'd been hanging on to herself for decades and the lengths she went to in order to keep her journal from being found.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: "Evil" is a bit of a stretch, but she was perfectly alright with a foal being kidnapped just for experimentation and genetically altering their physical abilities. However, she was not alright with their minds being tampered with.
  • Motherly Scientist: Eventually becomes attached to the kidnapped foal, as admitted in her journal, and is heartbroken when she learns that the foal's mind was irrevocably altered in her pursuit of science.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Has one of these moments when she discovers that the drug she was administering to the kidnapped foal was altering its mind more than its body. The moment sticks with her for decades.
  • My Greatest Failure: Views her charge's alterations as hers, with not being able to apologize to the foal serving as added regret.
  • Significant Name Shift: After becoming attached to the foal, she starts accepting "Junie" as a form of address.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: It took until "Rest and Reconciliation" for her to make a physical appearance, but it's in part due to her experimentation that Gray Ghost became the cat-like pony she is now.

    Startide

Startide

An elderly pony and a graduate from Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns.
  • Grumpy Old Man: Constantly complains about her grandson not minding his own business or similar, though it's clear she still cares for him.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: She and Celestia both remember her as quite stunning in her youth. Fast forward to the time when she's having trouble seeing and requires her grandson to help her out, and she's not quite so stunning anymore.
  • Trapped in Another World: Briefly ended up on Earth in 20XX, meeting Dr. Light and his creations. She was eventually returned home with help from them, another scientist, and what's implied to be a slew of Robot Masters.
Project Ashes (WARNING: Contains unmarked spoilers!)

Project Ashes

A baby filly created via science and magic by First Quarter and her team, kept alive in a hidden cylinder in Mocha Corp. HQ's sub-basement.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: Cozy Glow's origins in the source material were never fully explored, with an implication by MLP's staff that she was an orphan and nothing more. Here, she is deliberately created by First Quarter as the second iteration of one of her past bodies.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Quarter's plan for Project Ashes was to half ensure her original Cutie Mark would never hound her again, and half to give Cozy Glow a second shot at a peaceful life. The disasters that are instigated in Seasons 8 and 9 of the source material show how well that turned out.
  • Walking Spoiler: The revelation of her identity as the filly later known in Seasons 8 and 9 of MLP as Cozy Glow makes her importance difficult to hide.
The Root Cause Of It All (Warning: Contains spoilers)

Omega

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/omega_zero_3.png
"I am the Messiah! Ha ha ha!"

The Reploid feared as the God of Destruction. Played a key role in shaping Quarter's view of Leviathan. For tropes pertaining to his appearances in his source material, click here.

  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: In the source material, Omega was killed at the end of his fight with Zero in the third game. Here, the same explosion that launched Leviathan into modern-day Manehattan sent him backwards in time to Equestria pre-Nightmare Moon, where he is finally disintegrated by First Quarter.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: Omega's defeat and supposed destruction at Zero's hands are what cause the story to take place. If his death throes hadn't disintegrated Leviathan, she wouldn't be in Equestria.
  • Posthumous Character: By the time the story begins, Omega's destruction has already taken place. However, it's because of him that Leviathan's in Equestria to begin with. More information on him becomes available via Levi's explanation in the newspaper, as well as one of Quarter's flashbacks.
  • Small Role, Big Impact:
    • Omega directly appears only briefly in a flashback, but his slaughter of Quarter's squadron burned her memory of him into permanence. Because of him, Quarter cannot look at Leviathan without seeing Omega in her place. One of the 2nd Anniversary Chapter's What Ifs shows that without Omega's influence, she would have left Leviathan alone and never accelerated her plans to conquer Equestria.
    • It's his death explosion following his battle with Zero that launches Leviathan into Equestria to start with.
  • Trapped in Another World: Like Leviathan, he ends up in Equestria in a severely damaged state following his climactic battle against Zero. Unlike her, he also meets his end there.
  • Trapped in the Past: Unlike Levi, he ends up far in Equestria's past.note  Quarter makes sure he doesn't last very long.
